Repeating myself but Faux will suddenly discover many things they didn't give a crap about, and drag Biden for not fixing them literally overnight.
Also about Faux hand-wringing about the border wall - as if Trump got a whole wall built and not just a tiny strip.

I really want a blue baseball cap that says MAGA on the front and 46 on the side.
Anybody listening? I think there might be a market out there!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 8, 2020 2:33 AM |
Kamala really choked me up. Just seeing her up there in her white power suit it hit me how significant this is. Even here on DL you hear everyday “we can never run another woman/another black/a gay man” and to see a woman who clearly never listened to doubters, who was a trail blazer in just about every role she’s had, just stand there and radiate power and warmth and charisma. THAT IS the American dream. We’re lucky to have her.
I’m sure it’s a gif by now but the 4 of them got spooked when the confetti went off! And yes Doug looked very tense tonight. I hope they all stay safe.
And Joe. What can I say. A true gentleman with more class in his pinkie that the entire Republican Party have combined.
I’m so happy and proud that I chose to become an American citizen 🇺🇸
But not going to lie I’m still salty that 70m people wanted 4 more years. I’d like to be able to forgive and accept but I’m sorry I’m not there. When I see the footage of Paris ringing bells for us, the wound is just too fucking raw. That they would have burned everything down for a tax break or to be entertained by a clown confirming all their prejudices just breaks my heart. Maybe it always will.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 8, 2020 2:35 AM |
r12. I'd imagine Trump owns the MAGA trademark and will not let anyone use it for free. You really want to put money in his pocket?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 8, 2020 2:35 AM |
I’m having a hard time accepting that we should just let it all slide too. The evil and illegality that Trump and his team are guilty of is ten times what Clinton was. That he got elected on prosecuting her and continued to attempt it still burns me. I really want to see Trump and his cronies punished. Screw the 70m idiots. I will never understand or accept a justification for voting for him. It’s estranged me from my own mother. I find it so morally and ethically repugnant I just can’t let it stand without retribution.

So the Politico article about the two campaigns someone linked earlier makes it clear that the coronavirus won the election for Biden. Not the corona talk but the actual spread of the virus in February.
That month, Trump’s campaign conducted a $1.1 million polling project showing him leading prospective Democratic challengers even in blue states such as Colorado, New Mexico, and New Hampshire.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 8, 2020 7:25 AM |
R50 But if we could admit defeat in 2016, why can't Trump's supporters do the same in 2020? The margins are about the same now as in 2016. Be the biggest loser and just admit you lost without claiming fraud. I'm so sick of the deplorables. They just can't accept their nazi hero lost.

r7 Now, now. instead of focusing on the SJWs who nag society about equality and the fair treatment of the people who make up our base, we "libtards" need to open our hearts to and bend over backward for Trump supporters so we can better understand them and cater to them so they can maybe possibly one day over a rainbow consider the possibility of entertaining the thought of voting for us if Faux News and baby Jesus give them permission. it's the fair thing to do, doncha know.

To add to the joy of all this is the fact that Trump considered Biden to be an unworthy foe. Not only did he lose, he lost to sleepy, basement Joe!
by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 8, 2020 10:43 AM |
I respectfully disagree, r58.
Ridiculing Biden was Trump's only recourse and all that he's capable of, personality-wise.
Trump didn't pick up the phone to brow-beat the President of Ukraine to dig up dirt on Hunter Biden two years ago because he thought Biden was an "unworthy" foe. Trump's an idiot, but even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in awhile, and Trump's gelatinous gut was correct when it picked up on the fact that Biden could beat him.
As for "if not for Corona-virus, Trump would have won"- Perhaps, but that strict perspective omits reality- Covid-19 did happen. On Trump's watch.
Trump was not capable of, nor did not have the personality, political smarts, ability, acumen, interest in, to put it crudely, make Covid-19 work for him politically.
Covid-19 didn't defeat Trump. Trump defeated Trump with his massive fuck-up in handling it, his stupid, impulsive mouth, his crudity, his bigotry, his narcissism. Even a conservative Repug on local radio admitted after the election was called that he hated when, for the past 4 years, all you would hear out of Trump was, and I'm quoting this guy directly, "Me. me. me, me,.."
Now , to say Trump defeated Trump isn't to minimize Biden's brilliant campaign choices after South Carolina (Jim Clyburn, I bow down) in behavior, tactics, strategy in winning the election. Biden is a decent, super-capable, good man, who would have, if he were the POTUS and Covid-19 hit, made much better choices about how to handle it.
Why? Experience in governing and political skill; two things Trump lacked in spades.

Nice post Della.
R13, I feel the same. My encouragement to you is take your anger and use that to get (or stay) involved in politics where you live. I will NOT forgive these people, nor will I let it go. They almost drove the car we are all in off a cliff, I’m not forgiving shit. Also, this will likely be the beginnings of a new era, whether they are led by Trump or someone else, my gut is that they will start firing up the hate in their base immediately.

Trump talks trash about his opponents and I believe he considers them all a threat. The only ones he didn't attack directly was, I believe, Michael Avenatti, Stormy's lawyer and Stormy herself. Others brought Michael down for Trump and Stormy was paid off, for sure.

We are heading for two years in the widerness unless we can flip the two Georgia senate seats. Not likely, but not impossible. If we don't, the map looks very good for 2022, but it's going to be tough fighting against the turtle and his minions until then. Stay strong.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 8, 2020 12:13 PM |
Does anyone know any Trump voters (not his rally attending hardcore base) who justified voting for him with flimsy excuses. I’d like to know how they reacted to this past week. I’d like to think that Mr&Mrs Suburbs are ashamed to have their kids watch the president try to steal an election and they are finally seeing him for who he really is. The few in my Twitter feed are not, they are still saying character doesn’t matter and is not a reason to vote for someone. But are they buying his lies that the election were stolen? Do they know it wasn’t but feel fine about his attempt to cheat and bully his way into a second term?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | November 8, 2020 12:34 PM |
Agree r64, which is why Biden so emphasized and was so smart to speak of "cooperation" last night; not because he thinks he can appeal to McConnell for good faith cooperation; but precisely because he knows he can't.
Biden, by talking bi-partisanship means it, but he's shrewd enough to want to box McConnell in to having to choose between being an obstructionist, which is what McConnell wants to be, or, pragmatic bi-partisanship with Biden.
And of course, looming over it all, with the greater burden of them on McConnell is the Georgie run-offs and the mid-terms in 2 years.

I've been holding off saying this until we saw the actual results, but I sincerely think Biden ran the absolute best campaign possible under the circumstances. They focused on the states they most needed to win, and didn't go crazy trying for things that were going to be reaches. I don't know what effect more time in Texas or Florida would have had , but rebuilding the Blue Wall and trusting Stacey Abrams was the most important thing.
And I legitimately thought the convention was the best I've ever seen.

As per R71, every major US ally has now congratulated Biden on winning with the exception of Mexico (or did I miss that one?)
So the question now is when do less right wing GOP Senators start congratulating Biden and accepting the results.
Romney already has, but when do Collins, Murkowski, and (especially) McConnell start?
I'm thinking it's after the first couple of lawsuits Rudy tries to file in PA get thrown out--they need to wait long enough for The Base to think they have not thrown Trump under a bus, but not so long that it looks like they are trying to undermine the election.

Also - the New York Times did an in-depth of survey of what motivated people to vote D or R. On the subject of abortion:
"Abortion should abortion be legal in all cases" - 25% said yes. Of those 18% voted for Trump; 78% for Biden.
"It should be legal in most cases" - 27% said yes. Of those, 30% Trump, 67% Biden.
"It should be illegal in most cases" - 24% said yes. Of those, 72% Trump, 26% Biden.
"It should be illegal in all cases" - 18% said yes. Of those, 80% Trump, 19% Biden.
Georgia's in the Bible Belt. So... they will be reminded if they don't vote R, the D's will pack the court and Roe v Wade won't be reversed.
I hope that Trump's loss sends his mouth-breathing followers under the rocks from whence they came. I hope they lose all interest in politics.
I think a HUGE component of the turnout is the cult of personality, rather than some endorsement of the GOP. If you look at states like Oregon, which already have very high participation rates, they didn't go up that much. Trump turned out people who don't usually vote.
I would also expect him to go scorched earth on the rest of the GOP for failing him, so I'm not sure he'll give a rats ass about GA.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | November 8, 2020 1:44 PM |
Looking at the GA senate results:
In Warnock's race, he gets 32.9% and adding the other Dem (not the Lieberman) 6.6% , that's 39.5%. The GOP combined (Loeffler and Collins) is 45.9%. That's a very tough one to pull off by Warnock.
In Ossoff's race, his deficit is 1.9%.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | November 8, 2020 1:45 PM |
Loeffler needs to be indicted for stock manipulation and insider trading. Warnock needs to pound her on this just as Ossoff pounds Perdue on being a crook. Good thing is the Dems have no negs.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | November 8, 2020 1:51 PM |
R87, Warnock still has a better chance with huge negatives for Loeffler.
I doubt that Dems will win both as there will be no more Biden to drag them along. Will be very hard. But you never know as we can see from this Presidential race. Never say never.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | November 8, 2020 1:51 PM |
r89, who is to say that Biden won't campaign for them as President Elect.
Trump is going to lose his fucking mind, McConnell is going to shit bricks and the President and VP Elect can come in and campaign with them for a week before the election. Put Stacie Abrams on the stage with them and it is a knockout.
It will be glorious.

I live in Miami about 1 mile from the Freedom Tower. There was lots of cheering, cars honking and Cubanos Con Biden signs.
There's supposed to be a big rally next weekend for Biden.
As far as Cubans for Trump losing their minds, that ship sailed long, long ago.

Let us not forget that at the last Republican convention no actual agenda or platform was presented. They were ALL IN for Trump and whatever grifting scam he stood for. They outed themselves to be empty suits just serving Trump's daily mood swings. McConnell's only agenda was to pack the courts. And boy, did he accomplish that. Also, once again, tax break for the 1%.
Without Trump none of the alt-right, Qanon dolts will be able to make any big dent in the next four years. All they will have is maybe Breitbart and FOX News who will legitimize their ramblings. And they will not reach new eyes and ears to convert them to their cause.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | November 8, 2020 2:01 PM |
R89, doubt GoP voters see Loeffler's negatives as negatives. They don't care she broke the law.
Our hope is that Trump doesn't get involved to boost the MAGA vote, and the GoP will be depressed and stay home -- while the Dems come out in droves. I'm not sure though how plausible a sufficiently depressed GoP vote is with the massive campaigning that's gonna happen.
Let us not forget that at the last Republican convention no actual agenda or platform was presented.
Only pundits care about party platforms any more.
Rethugs know their actual agenda by heart, everyone knows what they vote for, and that they always vote. This hasn't changed, platform or no platform.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | November 8, 2020 2:08 PM |
I do not believe the conservatives will be depressed and stay at home. Biden in the White House will motivate them to put as many barriers in his socialist way they can.
What the Republicans have over the Liberals is messaging and controlling the narratives of political issues. Like, Defund The Police. The media hypes the right wing message branding (because, DRAMA! = ratings, click bait) and the Liberals have a really hard time to counter that, by then, established narrative having to remain on the defense.

A bit OT but I never imagined this election would affect to Fox viewership. I’ve been reading con sites for fun because seeing them in rage and anger after four years makes me happy. It seems many of them have moved away from Fox to Newsmax and OANN. They finished watchind when Fox told Joe won several states and projected him as a next POTUS. It’ll be interesting to see will this affect to the ratings of those three con propaganda channels. I am fully enjoying this.

One of the things I hope people have learned from the last 4 years is that while "career politicians" may annoy you and may give the appearance of being insider fat cats getting rich from the taxpayers (which is correct in some cases), the truth is outsiders, who have never run for political office, is not the answer either.
Stop falling for "successful business people" who think they can run the government like a corporation. The government is huge and complex and is slow and sometimes laborious for a reason. We just need to thank the bureaucratic gods for the government workers, whose names we don't know, who kept this country running while a mad man was in charge.
I know it's enticing to want to vote for someone who is just "telling it like it is." But, often those types are just loud mouths with no substance, and an inability to grasp the complicated nuances of government and are just simply out of their depths.
I think a HUGE component of the turnout is the cult of personality, rather than some endorsement of the GOP. If you look at states like Oregon, which already have very high participation rates, they didn't go up that much. Trump turned out people who don't usually vote.
I agree that a lot of the Trump voters were only interested in supporting him and hate much of the rest of the GOP. Once he’s gone and forgotten in four years, a lot of them might just slink back where they came from and not vote anymore.
The Democrats have to continue what they did in Georgia, and fight to get every minority voter to show up in EVERY election. This is where Stacey Abrams needs to be utilized and needs to be training others to do the same in all 50 states.

Another source familiar with the conversations told CNN on Sunday that first lady Melania Trump has also joined the growing chorus of President Trump's inner circle advising him that the time has come for him to accept the loss.

According to a Politico article I read last night. Biden and McConnell have a relationship that goes back decades. Not exactly friends, but certainly not enemies, either. During the Obama years, McConnell always preferred to negotiate with Biden rather than the President (and sometimes insisted on it). When Beau Biden died, McConnell was the only Senate Republican to attend the funeral.
It will be interesting to see if Biden can draw on that long-standing relationship to get some things done even if the Senate stays red.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | November 8, 2020 4:27 PM |
R152, you can't overcome the mentality of people who live to hate anyone based solely on their race/religion/sexuality and want to be treated as "special" - that's what those other parts of the country want.
When you witness a black president give affordable healthcare to white, lower income people or give coal miners an opportunity to be a part of a future that is coming whether they like it or not, and their instinct is to spit in his face and continue to vote Republican, then perhaps just accept that inroads will never be made with them because they will not accept that they are not better than anyone else.
They voted for scum who did nothing for them and even after they KNEW he had done nothing for them, they voted for him again. The majority of white people in this country are in fact hateful and racist and they deserve no consideration. They only win in this country because our system gives power to the minority. Electoral college, Senate where small states combined don't even have the population to match places like NY and CA, yet they get tons of Senators and gerrymandering at the House level (and we'll see more of it coming).
Why don't people stop telling Dems to be more introspective, stop doing fluff pieces on the "forgotten Trump voter" and start holding them accountable for voting for a party they could only justify voting for because they play to their prejudice since their economic policies are not for their (low) tax bracket?

It sounds like there was a massive hack of the election to create a red wave and hand Trump a countrywide "mandate". They went ahead with it, concentrating on Ohio and Florida, thinking 2020 would resemble 2016 electoral map-wise. But the mail-in ballots were unpredictable, and Nevada, Arizona and Georgia were a surprise. So the Russiapublicans gained House and Senate seats, but lost the Presidency.
A forensic exam of voting machines would prove that, but of course no one will do that.

by Anonymous | reply 177 | November 8, 2020 5:29 PM |
Here's the problem with how you think, R171: If a stabbing by an individual occurs in Europe at the hands of someone who was born Muslim, there is no possibility -in the minds of people like you- that it could have occurred for any other reason than that he was Muslim. You don't wonder why he did what he did, what kind of life he may have had which drove him to do it. You just go with the simplistic narrative of "jihad" which is then applied to anyone who is Muslim who would never even think of doing such a thing.
Yet, over and over and over again you see with Trump supporters (who are overwhelmingly white) that we know precisely why they support Trump. He offered them nothing but hate for their fellow citizens. He told them not to wear masks and that covid was no big deal. He endlessly lied to them and rather than go with an obviously decent man like Biden who preached that we are all human and all equal, they went with Trump because their hate supersedes everything else: Their health, their income, their decency.
LBJ knew who they were then, we know who they are now:
“I’ll tell you what’s at the bottom of it,” he said. “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”

You're missing one key factor, R171: they live in a completely different world than we do. They listen to different news sources, read different blogs, watch different television news, belong to different Facebook and Reddit groups, watch different YouTube videos, and listen to different Twitter accounts. In the MAGAverse they inhabit:
- Trump's swift action on the coronavirus saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
- Obama destroyed the economy and Trump brought it back to life.
- Obama created ISIS; Trump destroyed it.
- Trump has been the single most effective President ever, with literally hundreds of accomplishments to his record.
- Trump has taken a firm line with all of those foreign countries who have been taking advantage of us for decades. As a result, we are more widely respected and feared than we ever have been and we have more new trade deals that are better for the U.S. than we ever have in the past.
- Obama is a traitor who spied on Trump and used the power of the Presidency and the "Deep State" to try to block him.
- Trump has had to deal with more obstruction than any President before him and his opponents are all angry that their obstructionism hasn't worked, as Trump has overcome everything they have thrown at him.
- Biden is senile and a likely pedophile who can barely craft two sentences together and who is being propped up, with Harris as the power behind the throne.
And I'm not even going to go there when it comes to discussions of Congressional Democrats, liberals, "the squad," etc., other than to point out that in all of those sources they trust, we are the enemy, we are traitors, we are trying to destroy the country, destroy them.
If you think I'm exaggerating, I assure you I'm not. His supporters, and far too much of the country today, don't trust any of the "mainstream media," as it is all "fake news." Given the world they live in, the information they are fed, is Trump's relative success really that much of a surprise?

It's easy to say that Republicans have grown so extreme, moved so far right, that the party cannot possibly remain viable, but in their world, in those conservative bubbles, they aren't "far right," they aren't "extreme," they are "patriots" who love the country and are trying to save it from those trying to destroy it. And when exposed to the truth, instead of acknowledging it, they reject it and double down on their beliefs, even when those beliefs don't make any sense (e.g., QAnon).

R188, in fairness, very little media, mainstream or otherwise is presenting unbiased news. Even sources like Axios reveal their financial and editorial biases on a regular basis. AP sold out to RT earlier this year. If there were a large source that presented Just The Facts, M’Am, with zero editorializing and in the most neutral terms possible, we’d be living in a very different world. But it serves none of the moneyed interests to make such a source available.

Yeah I dipped into a conservative subreddit once and they were blaming Nancy Pelosi for covid. When Trump brought her up at the debate, something about her dancing through Chinatown??, I thought that's a big dog whistle to those types who will believe they are totally correct and backed up by the commander in chief. His debate performances were so crazy because he was speaking soundbites from conservative media that most of us are not mired in so you had to go back and look at what he said and then connect it to the various lies and conspiracies' on BB and Fox and the social feeds of right wing figures. Then as if we weren't bad enough we got Q.

R191, no such "large source that present[s] Just the Facts" is possible, as we cannot even agree today on what the facts are, and that's assuming that you can remove personal and editorial bias, which you cannot.
Decades ago, before the rise of the Internet, cable news, Rush Limbaugh, etc., there was fairly general agreement on the facts. The disagreements were on the correct course of action to handle the problems, move the country forward, and so on.
Now, though, we're looking at a situation where even common facts are considered to be political, where there is a fundamental disagreement on what is happening in the world around us, in the economy, in health care, in foreign policy. I don't know how to fix this because we're in a "heads I win; tails you lose" environment these days.
Take the economy: we're long overdue for a fairly substantial stock market correction. If that happens on Biden's watch, it will be all his fault. If it doesn't, it's because it's Trump's economy that's doing so well and Biden had nothing to do with it.
The same will be true of business restrictions and economic damage from the pandemic. Even if happens in the next two months, it will be all Biden's fault because people and businesses are responding to Biden's election. And if it happens after January, it will absolutely be all Biden's fault, even though the seeds for such problems were set this year.
It took a Great Depression to overcome our last fling at oligarchy. But even a Great Recession only changed things for a year or so and then we were right back where we were before. I wish I had the answer but I really don't; I hope someone does, though, as this state of affairs is causing very real harm.

by Anonymous | reply 210 | November 8, 2020 6:26 PM |
R188, excellent post. Those are the talking points for a good number of the 70MM who voted for this bastard in 2020.
I would add a bit of nuance to this, though. A very large number of Republicans voted for Trump because they simply always vote Republican, always have and always will, detest this man as a person, believe he made many mistakes, botched the response to COVID, hate how he talks to non-Whites, believe in personal freedoms (like abortion, gay marriage, choice of religion AND gun ownership) but firmly believe that fiscal Conservatism is the most important thing to uphold, and that the stock market doing so well these past four years cannot be all Obama's doing.
Not all of the GOP are brainwashed mouth breathers...many of them follow a certain set of (arguably selfish) ideals and want to go back to the deregulation and tax cuts of the Reagan era.

R205, I suspect there was an element of celebration over Biden’s win. While conducting opinion polls over U.K. leadership and voting intentions in the U.K. people were also asked who they would vote for in American elections. Not one single constituency would have gone to Trump over here according to the polls carried out. He is not liked even by the right wingers although I suspect a degree of snobbery is involved in that decision.

He expressed his surprise that these people can afford to rent a villa in Orlando for weeks to months because to him they look like rednecks - tattoos, wear sports clothes, poor grammar - but as I said to him they are the same 'type' as my cousins. [bold]“A lawsuit without provable facts showing a statutory or constitutional violation is just a tweet with a filing fee,”[/bold] said Justin Levitt, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.
Levitt said judges by and large have ignored the noise of the race and the bluster of President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed. “They’ve actually demanded facts and haven’t been ruling on all-caps claims of fraud or suppression,” Levitt said. “They haven’t confused public relations with the predicate for litigation, and I would expect that to continue.”
If Levitt is right, that may augur poorly for the legal challenges to the presidential election. Either way, the number of cases is starting to rapidly increase. But lawsuits will do little good unless, as in the 2000 presidential election, the race winds up being so close that it comes down to a very thin margin of votes in one or more must-win states.

R283 Though remember Biden is basically the only Senator who was friendly to Bernie, which is the reason Bernie dropped out when he did rather than continuing the fight, and wouldn't go negative against Biden. Regarding Georgia special election, Queen Stacey hasn't stopped since the election, you know. Throw Fair Fight some coin so she can continue her righteous work. There are other groups in Georgia as well, working to stop suppression and register/educate voters. Send a little $ their way if you can.
Re: the future of the EC and the disproportionate weight given to shithole states- with the census results, I expect Georgia, NC, FL and possibly AZ to GAIN electoral votes and places like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin to LOSE electoral votes.
As someone up thread stated, Ohio used to have over 30 electoral votes but, with time, more people have left for greener pastures. The red states are slowly being marginalized in the EC although we still need to do something about the disproportionate red state Senate representation.
Boomers are dragging this country down with their lunacy. But I am hopeful the young ones can become fully engaged and as dependable when it comes to voting. Encourage them. Help them understand how important it is to be engaged AND VOTE CONSISTENTLY.
I saw a lot of young people in 2018 and this year get involved locally either canvassing, phone banking, registering voters at outdoor events (pre-covid) or even working the polls or at campaign HQ. I am hoping more become involved and stick with it. We should encourage them whenever possible.

I'm never not going to believe that there were tons of fake votes added in on election day to the in-person voting totals. Trump did not gain support over the last four years.
I can't wait until the analysis is done comparing polling numbers to mail-in vs. in-person voting. We'll see what happens but I fully suspect that we'll see the mail-in matching the polls and the in-person decidedly not matching the polls but all in favor of Trump. One line of code in a voting machine turning every 10th Dem vote to Trump just like was shown was possible after the last election.

R370 congress can dispute certified results from the states. And then the house and senate deliberate on it. They’ve also floated the idea of changing electors in states, but I’ve read that’s unlikely because of how many more states Biden won.

Here are some things, in no particular order, that America will now be rid of as a direct result of Donald Trump being the loser that he is. (What a loser!)
We will lose the white supremacy whataboutism and both-sides-ing that for four years has slithered out of the highest office in the country, making racists feel happy, comfortable, and validated every step of the way.
We will lose our denial of climate change. We’ve had four years that the world couldn’t afford to waste, in which the president plugged his ears to scientific consensus on the topic. The Biden presidency will restore U.S. participation in the Paris climate accord, and hopefully work toward making as much of the Green New Deal a reality as possible. (There’s a certain amount of wishful thinking here, but if ever there were a moment for wishful thinking, it’s now.)
We will lose the top-down politicization of the pandemic. Instead, the government will actually promote science and mask safety, and stop constantly downplaying the danger of coronavirus in nihilistic pursuit of herd immunity. The new administration will no longer contort policy into a shape that flatters the president’s whims, which are unmoored from facts. Rather, Biden will follow through on what Trump recently accused him of: listening to scientists.
We will lose “alternative facts” as a concept. We will lose Kayleigh McEnany and Kellyanne Conway and everyone else who aggressively parrots every Trump lie to the public. We’ll also lose alternative streams of information in the White House, fact-fudging reports from Breitbart and Fox News and OANN taking precedence over presidential briefings, along with so many conspiracy theories whispered into the president’s ear from in-house Iagos.

Biden is going to win by about 6 million votes and likely 306 electoral college votes. As horrible as the gop is, I don’t see them just being like “nope, we’re just gonna ignore all that and install trump”. The country would burn to the ground. Mitch is likely to hold onto the senate so there’s no reason for him to stage a coup for a guy he hates. The silence from the gop is because they still need Trump’s turnout base for 2022 and they’re giving the special snowflake time to get laughed out of court all week.
One thing I hope is when perennial turncoat Miss Lindsey calls Biden that Biden will refuse the call and put him on the ignore list.

R384, the reporter told the MAGA guy what we all know: Republicans largely voted in person on election day because Trump told them not to mail their ballots. But Democrats largely used mail-in because of the virus. So there were mirror image margins for mail-in and same-day in person vote.
The guy said, Can't be. He's convinced Trump overwhelmingly won all kinds of votes.
You can't get such people to consider plain facts. They operate from the axiom that there's widespread lib'rul voter fraud. Whatever facts and information reach them are all matched to the axiom, and if they refute the axiom, they are lies.

The electoral college really has everybody fooled. Biden will end up with over 5 million more votes than Trump. But the stupid EC makes it look like we are an evenly divided country. We aren't at all. Democrats far outnumber Republicans in this country.
Democrats have won the popular vote in 7 of the last 8 presidential elections, but Republicans' expert messaging has convinced the public that they are the majority.

by Anonymous | reply 397 | November 9, 2020 4:48 AM |
R393, this is such a vicious circle.
I think one direction of the flow is:
1) Trump gets a fresh conspiracy theory from Breitbart, Limbaugh, far right twitter and Russian FB, those sort of guys. He may or may not - most often he does - tweet it to the world.
2) Trump often talks to Hannity at night (as was reported).
3) Hannity picks up the conspiracy from Trump and gives it a whirl on Faux, enriched with his own "reporting".
4) Other Faux deplorables (Judge Jeannine, Tucker, etc.) amplify as well.
5) Trump tweets the above Faux "reporting" as news.
In this way, Trump effectively launders far-right disinformation through Faux, and spreads it far and wide as the gospel to his flock. Deplorables consume the disinfo from Trump, then when Faux launders same they assume it's "confirmation" through factual reporting.
Final result - deplorables have downloaded a fresh batch of disinfo from Trump into their brain cells, and it's cemented there by Faux.

None of their arguments hold up. In 2016, 306 EV was a landslide. In 2020, Biden will end up with the same (a landslide by their measure, plus Biden also won the popular vote by over 50%, which Trump never did.
It does feel like the sad last days of a cult.

What if the reason that there were so many more votes for Trump this time around compared to 2016 is that, in all the worldwide craziness, both Russia and Saudi Arabia hacked the in-person voting machines and added smaller amounts but didn't consult each other so, suddenly, it's really obvious that something weird happened to give Trump all this alleged new found support.

Some info on the on-going drama inside the WH this weekend. He really isn't backing down an inch, and some of his inner circle are egging him on.
Pamela Brown on CNN last night reported that he is planning on hitting the road to do a couple of 'campaign' rallies, possibly as early as Mon or Tues night. To stir up the base, gin up his own fragile hurt ego and gain support for his claims of a fraudulent election.

I was just listening to someone talk and I caught the tail end of it.... they were saying that North Carolina could actually flip Blue because certain areas, primarily college areas, haven't been counted yet? And that if it does flip, prepare for Deplorables to go nuts citing that as a prime example of voter fraud.
Has anyone else heard anything like this?
by Anonymous | reply 408 | November 9, 2020 6:14 AM |
It shouldn't be surprising r408. With all the focus on PA and GA the media has missed this story. They temporarily stopped counting there because their state allows for late return of ballots, up thru this week I believe. The majority of outstanding mail ballots will be Dem-leaning, and it just may be enough - by a hair - to overcome Trump's smallish current lead. We'll know more this week.
It would take a lot, but there's still a small chance that the lead that Tillis has in the Senate race there can be overcome by Cunningham. That would be the real story, since the control of the Senate is still very much in play.
by Anonymous | reply 409 | November 9, 2020 6:21 AM |
R409 I just checked.
Biden is about 75,000 behind and there are reports that the outstanding mail in ballots and provisional ballots they currently have on hand to count is about 150,000, and that doesn't include mail in ballots they are accepting up until the 12th.
So if we go with that 150,000 number... Biden would need about 50%. Completely doable. Wow, I just had no idea NC was in play.
by Anonymous | reply 410 | November 9, 2020 6:31 AM |
r410 how are the current numbers in that Senate race?
by Anonymous | reply 411 | November 9, 2020 6:41 AM |
R410, your math is wrong. To catch up, Biden would need at least 75 percent of those 150,000 ballots.

by Anonymous | reply 413 | November 9, 2020 7:17 AM |
Cunningham trails by a larger margin - about $96K votes.. Winning the Senate race is very unlikely. The polls were massively wrong on this one.
Clearly some GOP / R-leaning Independents in GA split their vote - chose Biden but voted as usual down ticket.

by Anonymous | reply 419 | November 9, 2020 8:43 AM |
I wondered why NC was still not called, I thought Trump already won that. It would be amazing if the mail-in ballots were 80% Biden.
There's been talk that Texas and Fla actually turned Blue but because of the cheating (malware on the machines) and the loss of 300,000 mail-in ballots by DeJoy. Also, the fact that McConnell and Graham won overwhelmingly over their opponents by a large margin when they were polling neck and neck with their opponents raises red flags. Despite all the cheating and voter suppression, Biden won. I bet there was actually a Blue Wave for Biden..

Harrison was always a long shot. The polls showing him tied were wrong. I’m sure in the months ahead there will be deep dives into what exactly happened with the polls, but it seems the mistakes from 2016 were repeated. They just simply can’t poll when trump is involved. They didn’t capture the turnout of uneducated white people and they really missed how poorly Biden would do with Latinos in Texas and Florida.
The most shocking result for me was Maine. I thought for sure, with RCV, that Collins was finished. I guess Sara Gideon was a real dud and bombed in the debates. I also don’t think “pack the courts” was at all helpful. Democrats really suck at messaging.

I was shocked by this too, though I suppose it's the same as other areas: populated areas went for Gideon while rural areas went for Collins. Aside from the Kavanaugh debacle, I read that Dump's schemes really hurt the fishing/lobster industry. But I guess its the old "devil you know" thing.

Biden has announced his COVID task force. The inclusion of Rick Bright (the HHS whistleblower) should provoke a few all-caps ragetweets.
*******
The task force will be co-chaired by former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner David Kessler and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith of Yale University, according to the announcement.
Other notable task force members include Dr. Atul Gawande, a professor of surgery and health policy at Harvard, and Dr. Rick Bright, the vaccine expert and whistleblower who resigned his post with the Trump administration last month.
The group will consult with state and local leaders to help steer the federal response once Biden takes office.
Rounding out the task force is:
Dr. Luciana Borio, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, chair of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health,
Dr. Celine Gounder, clinical assistant professor at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine,
Dr. Julie Morita, former health commissioner for the City of Chicago for nearly two decades,
Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota,
Loyce Pace, executive director and president of Global Health Council,
Dr. Robert Rodriguez, who has researched the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of frontline workers,
and Dr. Eric Goosby, internationally recognized expert on infectious diseases.

Six of the eight House seats flipped by the GOP so far all featured female candidates.
Rep.-elect Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.) is the first Iranian American elected to Congress, while Rep.-elect Yvette Herrell (N.M.) will be the first Republican Native American woman in Congress. House Republicans currently only have one Hispanic woman among their voting members, but they’ll have at least one more with Rep.-elect Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.).
There are still other female candidates in uncalled races in California, Iowa, New York and Texas.
House Republicans do not have any voting members who are Asian American in the current session of Congress. That could change if California Republicans Young Kim and Michelle Steel unseat Democratic incumbents in their respective races. If elected, both would be among the first Korean Americans to serve in Congress.

by Anonymous | reply 481 | November 9, 2020 4:06 PM |
r481, here how it works. It varies a lot from state to state:
Arizona: By state party chair
The state chair for each party with a presidential ticket selects electors prior to the general election. The chair also appoints replacements for elector vacancies prior to the presidential election.
Pennsylvania: By presidential nominee
The presidential nominee for each party nominates electors to the Pennsylvania Secretary of State. The vice presidential nominee may be asked to nominate electors at the presidential nominee’s discretion.
Wisconsin: By state officeholders and candidates
State legislators, state executives, and candidates for those offices from each party nominate electors. This nomination process takes place the October prior to the presidential election.
Georgia: By State Party Committee
The central committee for each state or district party with a presidential ticket selects electors prior to the general election. This committee also appoints replacements for elector vacancies prior to the presidential election.
Nevada, Michigan and Minnesota: By State Party Convention This method is the most commonly used for selection of presidential electors. Each party’s state convention nominates electors from each congressional district to vote for the national party’s presidential and vice presidential candidates. Vacancies following the convention are filled by the central committee of the state party.
North Carolina: By district and state party conventions
Each party selects an elector for each congressional district during district conventions. The party’s state convention selects two at-large electors to complete its Electoral College slate.

One of the things that drove me most insane about Trump, and I have said this before, is that the man was simply incapable of joy.
He doesn’t like to read, he doesn’t like music, he doesn’t care about art or poetry, or fine dining. He doesn’t laugh. He doesn’t laugh at himself. He is joyless. He doesn’t understand beauty in nature, in people, in architecture.
The only way he measured things is by how he perceived it made other people envy or look up to him.
He is just a deeply troubled, empty, vulgar shell of a man. I have no idea what his old man did to him, but he did a number on him.
I mean, can you honestly imagine him ever just wanting to go to a friend’s house to sit on the couch and chat, and play with their dog, and have coffee, and talk about things?
Or remembering something little his wife had wanted and mentioned, and picking it up while seeing it on his travels, and spiriting it away in his luggage and taking it home and hiding it and wrapping it and just being excited to give it to her?
just the little human things that make life worth living. He feels and appreciates none of it. It’s all a crude dick measuring contest, and the only way to get ahead is to cut other’s down.
It’s why he is such a bad negotiator. He’s incapable of understanding win/win.
Someone can only get ahead when someone else loses. It’s why he and the GOP never figured out that the way to save the economy was to handle covid. They couldn’t fathom that one didn’t have to be at the expense of the other.
An elections lawyer was on NPR today and said that the American people do not vote for President, but determine the electors. he also said that the constitution does not force the electors to vote for the person their state wanted, so it is possible for the New York electors to vote for Trump. The provisions are in some state constitutions, but not in the federal one.
This is a recipe for a shit show when such bad actors like Trump and the GOP are involved.
I bet most voters are totally clueless about this. And exactly how are they gonna understand that they vote for electors, not for President, when they fill in the circle next to the candidate for President?

The Senate candidates there are making a stink because they need Trump to rally for them for the January runoffs. The last thing they need is to have him sniping at them on Twitter for not falling in line.
At the same time, they look like idiots to voters who did not vote for Trump. And in Georgia, that number is almost the majority.
This is the future of the GOP. They can't afford to repudiate Trump because he will take his revenge on Twitter, but they can't afford to back him because it's clear he can't win an election.
