AZ is looking scary. AP should not have called it.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 5, 2020 1:53 AM |
Georgia is now only about 30k votes... with 4% of the vote still to be counted, largely from Dem-friendly places. I think the NYT will be right and Biden will win Georgia. Also, the amount of votes still out in PA, what it looks like it will be, make PA a likely win.
This is excruciating - but Biden could lose both AZ and NV (unlikely) and if he wins either GA or PA he's President.
I wish I could fast-forward to the weekend and just get this finished.

Bernie Sanders hasn’t gotten enough blame for how poorly Biden did in Florida. Bernie has dragged the dem party down with his crazy ass “free everything for everyone” nonsense. A lot of vulnerable house dems also lost because of him. I’m sure joe Cunningham is making a voodoo doll of Bernie tonight.
Fuck that man and his deranged supporters.

Stop being deranged, R11. Nobody with a D next to their name wouldn't have been able to court those rabid right-wing Cubans. Also, why would you compromise the party platform and turn it into a clone of GOP just to appeal to that narrow demographic in that one fucking moronic state.

Even if GA doesn't go for Biden, my hope at this point is there's enough of new Dem votes to drag Perdue down under 50%, thereby triggering a runoff for that Senate seat and giving hottie Jon Ossoff a second chance. He is an excellent candidate and we need to increase that Senate control margin!

Bush v. Gore was awful, but we didn't have all the blogs, twitter and SM to incessantly check. And 24 hour TV news wasn't quite psychotic yet, though it was getting there. Plus it was one state at issue and the disputes over counting got very technical. So people weren't missing sleep because it's not as though anything was getting decided overnight.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 5, 2020 2:25 AM |

Hold on! The moral of the story was that SCOTUS is partisan. Here is a breakdown of the vote in Bush v. Gore:
[quote] Five justices agreed that December 12 (the date of the decision) was the deadline Florida had established for recounts (Rehnquist, O'Connor, Scalia, Kennedy, and Thomas in support; Stevens, Souter, Ginsburg, and Breyer opposed).
Rehnquist: Nixon O'Connor: Reagan Scalia: Reagan Kennedy: Reagan Thomas: Geo. HW Bush Stevens: Ford (outlier) Souter: Geo. HW Bush Ginsburg: Clinton Breyer: Clinton
Never forget!

This is a HISTORIC achievement, but we can’t stop now. The fight isn’t over yet, and we need YOU to help us PROTECT the Election from outside threats.
President Trump is calling on YOU to ensure we have the resources to finish the fight. He needs you to step up and contribute to our critical Election Defense Fund so that we can secure FOUR MORE YEARS.
Please contribute ANY AMOUNT IMMEDIATELY to the Official Election Defense Fund and you’ll increase your impact by 1000%. >>

R199: read a summary somewhere tonight. Said Pelosi and Schumer aren’t responsible for this campaign. But there is a lot of unhappiness, dissent, unrest after an unexpected showing for the Dems particularly in the house. The sentence that leapt out to me was this doesn’t create a smooth glidepath for Pelosi. But it didn’t seem to suggest she had to step down or would be forced out either. However she’s probably going to have to work for it.

Schumer on the other hand completely bombed out in the Senate, so who knows what will happen to him?

R214,R216, you have to factor in what Trump's mental capacity is likely to be in 2024. If he loses, for one thing his mental illness has to deal with having lost. For another, he'll have to face stresses such as possible prosecutions and what to do about his $400m loans, all while losing 95% of the people who have been making day to day life easy for him the last 4 years. If he is already showing signs of dementia, all those things will exacerbate that as well.
While his followers would vote for him if he were starring in Weekend at Bernie's, I'm just saying four years is a long time for an elderly man with serious pre-existing mental issues.

It was worse, for a number of reasons.
First of all, it was unprecedented in living memory. There had been times when it had gone far into the night before, but it never had remained undecided the next day.
Second, the networks had almost all called Florida for Gore on Election Night, and then reversed themselves overnight. So you went to bed thinking Gore had it in the bag, only to discover in the morning you were wrong.
And the recount took weeks, not just a few days.

R213, yes. If you read the twitter feed at the link, a lot of people are talking about how Las Vegas is practically a part of California now. One compared it to the Central Valley of California, which is kind of unfair, because it least it has the strip. The Central Valley is boring as hell.
You can imagine how pissed off calling it “California” makes the old timers that were born here, but it’s true.

It's a shame. If Trump had just been semi decent in handling COVID or appearing to take it seriously, he would have won by large margins. That was all the left had to run on and it's on a razor's edge. This would have been an easy win for him. There was no blue wave. The country is literally divided right down the middle.

I think that is the wrong attitude to take R322. Mitch isn't going to just roll over and allow Biden to do whatever he wants, but at the same time I think people underestimate the clubby nature of the Senate and Biden's ability to work the Senate. He's not VP anymore, he will, hopefully, be the head dude and he will have the ability to cut deals that he couldn't make as VP.
I just think it's a mistake to go into this thing with a defeatist attitude.
I'm tired of seeing Democrats upset because it was not a blow out. A win is a win, no matter how you get it and no matter big it is. If you assume the worst, you're gonna get the worst. And maybe that is a little Pollyanna on my part. But there is nothing wrong with a little hope.

R322, I disagree. While it is preferable that we won the Senate, there are midterms in two years. We need to make up ground then. Also, Biden will appoint a superior cabinet, filled with experts, scientists, and smart people who will right the wrongs made by trump toadies. We will rejoin the Climate Accord, science will be respected, and relations with allies will be rebuilt. Also, Biden has always worked across the aisle. It's possible he can get votes from repukes that trump would not because everyone is afraid of him.

To give you an idea of what's going on in Pennsylvania: the Vote PA website for some reason is a little bit behind the AP website.
In that gap, Joe Biden gained 20,000 votes, while Trump gained 9,000. That's a 69% margin.
Joe is now down 173,000. Assuming 600,000 outstanding ballots, that would give Joe roughly 400,000 to Trump's 200,000 (if the margin holds). He will win PA.

If I understand this right - we either need Pennsylvania.
OR any two of: Arizona, Georgia, Nevada.
So if AZ craps out - there's still hope. And 50.5 to 48.1 still sounds pretty strong at this late hour.

Is the AP seeing something different in Arizona? They have had it as a Biden win since yesterday. Funny how Trump starts whining and suddenly counting slows down and, what's this, he's gaining now? Hi Russia. They know where they need to flip the switches to flip votes now.

I'm very worried about Arizona. I have no idea why there's suddenly talk about Trump clinching Arizona when AP called the state for Biden yesterday. I'm hoping on Arizona and Nevada updates today and that we can declare Biden as the winner.

Somebody digging deep in the detail weeds of Nevada - and feeling hopeful?
If below is right: Even if Trump wins what's left in Maricopa (340K-62K just in) by +18% as today, & if he somehow wins Yuma by 50% (a big stretch), that nets him LESS than Biden's lead. With blue Pima/Coconino left. So he'd need: more in Maricopa, &/or more ballots than this.
by Anonymous | reply 383 | November 5, 2020 7:24 AM |
In all honesty, I don't know R379. Fox called AZ for Biden very early last evening, before anyone else did. As they were getting slammed they continually had their analysts staunchly defending their decision. I don't understand it and I want it to go to Trump.

Why would the deciding states also be the ones that take the longest to count? I mean, every fucking one of them? WTH? Arizona and Nevada should have been done by now. It's like they are slowing it down on purpose. They want Pennsylvania to go first so they don't get the wrath of the Trumptards? Something seems really off about it.

Go look at the Absentee Votes for President section on this page for Nevada. Trump has 900 and Biden has 92. They must have only counted one little area of the absentee vote so far, like a trailer park or something.
by Anonymous | reply 392 | November 5, 2020 7:36 AM |
Or maybe like...it's taking a long time because it takes time to count 65 million absentee ballots. This year is slower because it's different, people don't usually vote by mail at this rate.

@Taniel What we know, 3:00am EST 11/5.
Biden needs 17 EVs out of NV (6), AZ (11), GA (16), PA (2), (NC 15)
—NV: up 6K: more tmrw.
—AZ: up 68K. To offset Pima/Cococino, Trump will need more than he got today in Maricopa.
—GA: down 22K. 10s of 1000s mail left. Tight.
—PA: down 164K. 100s of 1000s mail left.

I think the media should ignore protests. It will only spread if they keep focusing on it. We know FOX will keep a live streaming cam on it all- and Trump will tweet the on- but please don't walk into the trap of covering a bunch of paid Republican operatives bused-in to cause chaos.

Whose decision was it in PA not to count the mail-in ballots until Election Day?
by Anonymous | reply 407 | November 5, 2020 8:20 AM |
R405 - the Trump cult GOP fought that in states where they could because he wanted to look victorious the night of and claim that any votes that were counted after were fraudulent (even though they were as valid as any others). Tons of attorneys and court filings (if you were keeping up during the days leading to the election). Again, states have their own voting laws and many were not amended in time to properly prepare for a mass pandemic. The states that normally handle a large volume of mail-in and absentee obviously were better prepared this year.

Correct. There is no way for Trump to win.
by Anonymous | reply 415 | November 5, 2020 8:40 AM |
But to your question, YES - he needs 17 (including Arizona) -- or he needs 17 some other way (like Pennsylvania, which by itself is 20, etc.)
by Anonymous | reply 416 | November 5, 2020 8:40 AM |
Don't you love how Trump is confused and thinks "dump" means somebody is dumping his votes in the trashcan?
by Anonymous | reply 417 | November 5, 2020 8:42 AM |
R414, because the majority of uncounted ballots in AZ are absentee from Maricopa and Pima counties, they are not expected to break for Trump in the manner the set counted earlier did. Hence Fox nor AP changing their call. While Trump will get close, there appear to be not enough votes for him to win AZ.

I'm kicking myself for taking a break from all this for several hours, because I'm having a hell of a time piecing all this together.
Trump is demanding some states stop counting, while other states keep counting, right?
Biden is down about 150K in PA but there's 600K left to count, most mail-in and urban ballots?
by Anonymous | reply 497 | November 5, 2020 11:55 AM |
" I think he needs Pennsylvania too, but he's likely to win it."
No, even without Pennsylvania, he just needs 17 ev's. Arizona plus Nevada = 17.
(Georgia is 16 and could substitute for either one -- and if Biden did win Pennsylvania, that's all he would need because it has 20 ev's)
by Anonymous | reply 498 | November 5, 2020 11:57 AM |
The states who are still counting votes should call in more people.

Forgot the link - this site has already given Biden Arizona but you can see the map and how many votes each state has (and who has them so far, except he - and others - may have jumped the gun on AZ)

R498 I know, but Arizona is not won yet. It can get unbearably close there. Trump might even pull off a win.
by Anonymous | reply 503 | November 5, 2020 12:01 PM |
Oh I see R503. When you said he needed Pennsylvania "too" I thought you meant in addition to AZ/NV.
This is so crazy. All because some Republican legislatures wouldn't let their states count the absentee ballots as they came in.
We need those UN observers, like they send to 3rd world countries to oversee elections.
by Anonymous | reply 504 | November 5, 2020 12:05 PM |
That page is shit, R501. They basically have Trump already at 268 as though GA, NC and PA are already decided, with Nevada tied (which is also bullshit).
by Anonymous | reply 505 | November 5, 2020 12:05 PM |
MSNBC and CNN are reporting that Joe has 253 electoral votes while the AP reports 264. WTF?
by Anonymous | reply 507 | November 5, 2020 12:05 PM |
Yeah it's so fucked up. I think he's trying to predict the end-result - the date he has, like on PA, which he's given to Trump, is November 10.
Oh well, used to be a good resource. Now it's useless (other than telling you how many ev's each state has and I'm sure there's better maps)
by Anonymous | reply 508 | November 5, 2020 12:07 PM |
R507 AP has given Biden Arizona (so did Fox News).
MSNBC and CNN have never called it for Biden.
So that explains the 11 point difference.
by Anonymous | reply 509 | November 5, 2020 12:08 PM |
R507, MSNBC Has not called Arizona for Biden yet like everyone else has.
by Anonymous | reply 510 | November 5, 2020 12:08 PM |
Does anyone feel like AZ, NV and GA are being a bit attention-whorish? Could they not have already released the numbers already? Oh, but no, they have to have some grand press conference so they get to be the state that calls the election.

[quote] [R496], maybe they decided to get a few hours of sleep or they are getting ready for work.
Oh for sure. I just meant that compared to last night when there was so much more, I don't know, universal urgency to everything, people were still up and glued to their screens. That's definitely dissipated tonight. But I'm wide awake because I slept most of the day. I'm not usually up and on here at this hour. : )

Yikes, Georgia is close. Trump only has 18,000 more votes than Biden.
by Anonymous | reply 519 | November 5, 2020 12:17 PM |
Well, R 515, they could have been correct in the first place. It wouldn't surprise me if Trump supporters storm one or more of the ballot counting centers and destroy ballots, so no result can be determined. That's why it's so important that some states change their election counting procedures. There's no reason that early ballots could not be counted before election day.
by Anonymous | reply 520 | November 5, 2020 12:18 PM |
I must also get on my soap box about voting once again. Democrats if you vote in every election, things like the PA State Legislature would not happen and they would have started counting much earlier.

There is drama and confusion about how many absentee ballots are actually left in PA. Which I don't like, that number is important.
However so far generally the number has been higher than we realized, so I am going to wait before believing the low estimate some are saying.

So yeah, third world, banana republic shitshow all around.

Ralston from last night, warning that rural votes may drop first, so don't panic ??
Jon Ralston: T-minus 12 hours until NV decides fate of free world (forget it, he's rolling). More than 100K ballots will start being counted, one county at a time. If rurals are loaded first, Biden's lead will shrink. (Cue freak out if so.) Many more votes in urbans, though. See you there!
Jon Ralston Retweeted
Riley Snyder @RileySnyder For the record, Nevada has not stopped counting ballots; county officials are still continuing to process ballots into the night, just results won't be reported until tomorrow morning. Washoe County has a livestream & it looks rather busy at 8:30 p.m.

But Nevada is not heavily populated, comparatively, and the bulk of their population is in the Las Vegas area. If it was money and chips, they would breeze through the numbers.
Their methodology is unique and is legal. They are just taking their own, sweet and casual time. The clock strikes 5pm PDT, they shut down for the day and head home.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | November 5, 2020 12:57 PM |
