Then, I don't see how this country can ever really progress. With a parliamentary system, nuance becomes important. You can rely on Good v Bad, Me v You, Them v Us. You can't have politics discussed in bumper stickers or tweets or new tickers. The slight variations become the point and they elevate discourse and thought. As long as this country continues treating politics like Eagles v Pats, there can be no real forward motion. And, sorry, a 3 party system isn't the answer either, as you say, r173, it just syphons people off from one edge or the other, emboldening the most bland, big tent voices, i.e. the status quo. There can be no forward motion within this framework.

The Repubican Party is splitting between far-right trumpists and normal Republicans. Eventually they will break into two parties, at least.

The Democratic Party is headed the same way between far-left and normal Democrats but we're not as close to splitting.

Will there ever be normal Republicans? I can't see it, the racist white wing will dominate the GOP and the normal Republicans like Steve Schmidt will merge with the Centrists Dems. When that happens, the outer fringes will become their separate party.

There's a case to be made for opening the primaries (ie open primaries) so that NPAs (which tend to be less political) can vote in the primaries. It would probably lead to less polarizing candidates.
