Have you seen anyone taking down their Trump signs

Every day when I drive down the road I check to see who will start realizing they have been conned? Nothing yet here.

by Anonymousreply 82October 10, 2020 4:08 PM

Anyone who had Dump signs up are part of the cult and they aren't going to be taking them down OP. No matter what they will hang in to the very end.

by Anonymousreply 1October 8, 2020 11:50 AM

It would be nice to think this could be the case but more likely: 1) they are still voting for him but took the sign down because they're embarrassed about it; 2) the sign was stolen.

by Anonymousreply 2October 8, 2020 11:54 AM

Someone near me has a Trump flag that says "No More Bullshit". You can kind of take this in more than one way but I guess the typical Trumpster isn't smart enough to realize this.

by Anonymousreply 3October 8, 2020 11:55 AM

[quote] Every day when I drive down the road I check to see who will start realizing they have been conned? Nothing yet here.

Wow, thanks for that update! This sounds like an excellent use of your time. Have you checked back? You could be missing some exciting sign removals happening right now. Go look and tell us what you see.

by Anonymousreply 4October 8, 2020 11:58 AM

I am thinking of Maria Konnikova's book on con artists.

One of the reasons con artists thrive is that the majority of their marks are too embarrassed or ashamed to admit they've been duped (and hence never go to the authorities). It's a pride thing.

Since Trump is essentially a con man, that explains why a portion of his supporters will not admit they were wrong about him.

Of course, another portion still supports him without reservations.

(Cult leaders, as Konnikova notes, are essentially con artists.)

by Anonymousreply 5October 8, 2020 12:11 PM

My friends in America report no shortage of Trump signs, as I related in another thread, and none that they have already noted been taken down.

My guess is that, as usual, the human response to a sense of being attacked is to dig in the heels and double down is in play.

Very few people vote with their brains, but with their guts.

And I also suspect that the doubling down is not so much a gesture of liking Trump so much as a gesture of sticking it to the New York TIMES, the panderers to Wokeness and Cancel Culture, and the rest of the Liberal Establishment they believe views them with precisely the same level of reductionist sneering that said Establishment deplores when directed at any other group, anywhere.

No surprises here.

by Anonymousreply 6October 8, 2020 12:19 PM

Trump operates similarly to a pyramid scheme/MLM. There's the 'sunk cost fallacy' wherein someone who is losing a fortune selling leggings or diet pills will throw in even more money in the small chance of success, because the alternative is to admit you've been conned. It's no coincidence many MLM fraus are Christian Trump types.

by Anonymousreply 7October 8, 2020 12:32 PM

Every day you leave the house on a fool's errand, OP.

by Anonymousreply 8October 8, 2020 12:48 PM

It is astonishing to me how the very people bemoaning a now hugely polarised and divided society are so willing to jump on the Polarising Express at every opportunity to demonise, dehumanise, mock, jeer, and sneer at anyone who holds a different viewpoing. They express no more curiosity about why, or interest in finding out, than the Other Side does about them.

I realise that ranting and oversimplifying are cathartic, but in the end everyone ends up in an echo chamber.

Trump is a charlatan and, I suspect, clinically psychologically damaged, but it's not the first time such a one has gained public support. The question is, why? But no one feels the need to connect the dots that link those episodes in human history to other factors besides That Ole' Devil Christianity and the presumed Neanderthal qualities of those who feel angry, attacked, etc.

Some highly intelligent and sophisticated types supported fascism in Germany - scientists, artists . . . many didn't, but some did.

The point is that there is no centre any longer, and most of the discourse on DL as well as in the TIMES and on MSNBC feeds rather than discourages polarisation and demonisation of the other.

It is amazing to watch.

There are all of two Trump signs in our town. One homeowner has recently surrounded his sign with electric fencing, so I assume the others have walked off. (Don’t they need that at the border to shock infants trying to crawl over?)

by Anonymousreply 13October 8, 2020 1:06 PM

I’m in New Jersey and I’m surprised at the number of Trump signs I see. I wasn’t seeing any Biden signs at all, but I’ve seen about three now.

I definitely think R6 is on to something. I’m worried that the election will end up being less pro-Trump and more a referendum on the far left.

by Anonymousreply 14October 8, 2020 1:08 PM

A lot more Biden signs and yards that only have Senatorial, House, and local candidate signs. And most of them Democratic too.

by Anonymousreply 15October 8, 2020 1:24 PM

I saw a family of bereaved former Trumpers holding a solemn ceremony as they removed their Trump sign and replaced it with a Biden one. No doubt a scene we'll see replayed countlessly in the coming weeks.

by Anonymousreply 16October 8, 2020 1:40 PM

[quote]I’m in New Jersey

Which part? Do you think we don't know that "New Jersey" contains a broad spectrum of political opinions, and which ones dominate a particular region can change from one small area to the next? If you're seeing Trump signs in a very rural or a very wealthy area, it's hardly notable. New Jersey is a solidly blue state overall. No one believes there's a groundswell of Trump support in New Jersey.

I live in the affluent neighborhood in my city where supposedly the most well educated and enlightened people live. I am amazed at the number of Trump signs I'm still seeing. Yes, not as many as at the last election and there are more Biden signs than Clinton ones. But, I worry about the upcoming election. No one should assume that the reasonable candidate is going to win.

Sadly, Trump has never won the popular vote or electoral college in polls for six years and his margins have never been worse than 2020.

It's also going to come as a devastating shock to Bucksegheny Pennsylsconsin and the rest of the Trump trash when they discover elections aren't decided by yard signs on Nov. 3, 2020.

No, they are cult members and need deprogramming. I'm in Texas so we have lots of culties but a lot of Biden signs too. Texans are big on gun rights and the cult is terrified someone will try and take them away. These guys really think if Biden wins the men in black will come into their homes and repossess their weapons. That's how fucking dumb they are. They don't realize that most people, even democrats, have guns too so when their plans to "take back 'Murica" go into effect they may have a slight shock in store and meet some resistance.

I was on the freeway the other day and saw a woman driving a car with bumper stickers all over the back. One was Biden/Harris, one was "Pro-choice, every child matters, no more unwanted children", another "pro children, not pro guns", and so on. I was thinking she was one brave woman down here. Surprised some redneck hasn't tried to run her off the road. A friend and his wife had some asshole aggressively cut them off and they couldn't figure out why until they realized it was their Biden 2020 sticker.

PA YS Troll Here. There has been a huge surge of Trump signs this week. If anything people are now putting up more and more yard signs for Trump. Lots of mini pop up rallies Trump here as well. Since Trump has to put his rallies on pause, people are stepping in and having mini rallies for him. Here is one from yesterday - in the center of Doylestown. Doylestown is probably one of the most liberal parts of the county (aside from New Hope)

by Anonymousreply 35October 8, 2020 4:19 PM

R14 " I’m worried that the election will end up being less pro-Trump and more a referendum on the far left."

Of course the election is going to be a referendum on the far left. You have to understand, a lot of Trumps support is because people have been turned off by the actions of the extreme left - for YEARS. Many Trump supporters - especially the more quiet ones - are not voting FOR Trump - they are voting for the economy, they are against China, they are against socialism, they are against communist ideals, they are FOR preservation of their rights as Americans. They are FOR free speech, They are against raising taxes (especially in a pandemic) they are against packing of the supreme court (an authoritarian move to say the very least) they are against the hysteria that the left has manufactured as a means to get rid of Trump, they are against the corruption in DC (Its come out this week that Hillary created the entire Russia narrative out of thin air and Obama knew - like WTF - we've had to endure that bullshit for 4 years - and it was all created by her - F That)

Not everyone is voting FOR Trump because he is Trump. Trump is a deeply flawed individual, but many of his policies have been pretty solid. Many - not all. He has done a lot more than the Joe Bidens of this world. Biden has had 47 years and has done nothing.

by Anonymousreply 36October 8, 2020 4:26 PM

Now they're bribing many Republican officials, including laundering money to Repukes through the N.R.A. and giving Mitch McConnell's constituents an aluminum factory!

Hillary didn't "create the entire Russia narrative out of thin air." It's public record and so is over $1 billion Trump made in partnership with Russian mafiarchs.

[quote]Of course the election is going to be a referendum on the far left.

And, with that one sentence, you destroyed any shred of credibility you might have once possessed. This election, like all second-term elections, will be a referendum on Trump, not on the "far left." Your assertion is even more nonsensical when you consider that Democrats nominated Joe Biden, who cannot possibly be described as "far left."

Oh, it figures. You're the MAGAdroid Pennsylvania yard sign troll who claims to be "moderate" but does nothing but mindlessly spout the Republican line.

by Anonymousreply 71October 9, 2020 7:51 PM

R71 - I agree that the election is mostly a referendum on Trump - that is nearly always the case when an incumbent is seeking re-election, anyway, but in this instance, with the incumbent so divisive a figure, it is even more so. That said, it is also true, I believe, that Trump's divisiveness is entwined with the culture wars: for many, supporting him isn't a response to his appeal, but rather the only route they feel they have to stick it to the liberal left. I don't think most Americans understand what "far left" even means. They want to stick it to entities like panderers at the New York TIMES, not the SWP.

So in that sense, it's also an ongoing component of the culture wars, which are raging on both sides of the Pond now, where many feel free speech is on the ropes, gladly undermined by entities with an agenda.

The term "referendum on the far left" is, I agree, wrong. But I would agree that the election will demonstrate just how divided the country is, and in that sense, is some sort of statement on issues well beyond Trump himself.

by Anonymousreply 72October 10, 2020 1:56 PM

Certainly Trump supporters see the election as a referendum against the "far left," which they identify with the principle of equality under the law, freedom of religion, anti-fascism, Social Security, etc.

I live on the Connecticut coastline about 45 min. from NYC. Every year my husband and I take a long drive in the fall and check out the scenery. The last election, we counted twenty signs in the Kent - Litchfield area of CT (Northwest Hills) for Trump. Yesterday when we went, there were only four signs. Not only that, but we went by the Republican headquarters of one of these towns, and they were touting only local candidates. You wouldn't even know that Trump was running for President. Not one picture, or his name were anywhere to be found. I was comforted by that.
