No, dear OP. The â90s belonged to Miss Jackson.
Highest selling album of 1990 in the US
Big sweep at the Billboard Awards in 1990
Multiple Grammy wins throughout the decade
Two consecutive # 1 albums and a successful greatest hits album
Academy Award nom
Three massive sellout world tours
Two #1 box office films
Multiple charting hits in the decade, including six Hot 100 #1s and a slew of Top 40 singles
Signed two of the biggest recording contracts in history at the time during the decade
First album by a female to debut at #1 during the SoundScan era
Continued her trend of putting out more iconic music videos
Achieved several Billboard chart feats, including being the first woman to debut a single in the Hot 100 top 10
Created arguably the most famous, copied photo of a female pop star ever for the cover of a 1993 issue of Rolling Stone
Sheâs Janet, Miss Jackson if youâre nasty.

Whatâs interesting is how big someone like Janet was at that time, but how insignificant she has become retrospectively. Does anyone even listen to her today? Is there any interest what so ever from current stars about her music, style, concerts or other performative elements? People will say dance, but letâs face it, once they failed to keep Paula Abdul locked down and let her become a star why would anyone want to watch Janetâs dancing as a flawed copy of who taught her the choreography and can do it ten times better? Paula has maintained more cache that Janet with a greatly inferior vocal instrument.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 5, 2020 2:41 AM |
Janet has tons of hits. How do you compare Janet to Paula? I mean, come on. Thatâs ridiculous
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 5, 2020 2:43 AM |
R14 is a troll. There is not a pop star alive today, male or female, who hasnât given her props in some way or shown her influence in their own work. From BeyoncĂ© to Britney (the white, lesser Janet), Rihanna to Ciara, Kelly Rowland to Aaliyah, Gaga to Xtina, they have ALL given Janet props and copied her artistry in one way or another. Hell, The Velvet Rope pretty much gave birth to Solangeâs A Seat at the Table and influenced a bevy of artists from Sza to HER to FKA Twigs. Rhythm Nation 1814 was âwokeâ and in formation when BeyoncĂ©âs Lemonade was just a few piddly lemons on a vine.
As for interest in her today, well, duh. When you are an icon of that stature, your influence is perennial. Every time Rihanna goes on tour, you see echoes of Janetâs live shows. Kelly Rowland puts out a sensual video, sheâs channeling Janet. BeyoncĂ© does the militant thing - Janet. Solange goes Afro-chic - Janet did it decades before.

Paula Abdul has Janet to thank for her own career as a solo artist, and she pretty much has said so over the years. Janetâs CONTROL album was so iconic that, in its wake, a slew of dance divas of color were suddenly hitting the scene with various offerings of R&B-flavored dance music, from Vanessa Williams to Pebbles, Karyn White, Jody Watley and Peeples.
Here, Paula gives a lovely introduction before presenting Janet with an award. This was just after Janet had been named as one of the inductees in the 2019 class of the RNR Hall of Fame.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 5, 2020 1:12 PM |
Janet evolved into her sexuality as an artist and was always changing her concept and image from album to album. She also had, like, way more than a dozen hits. On the R&B chart alone, she has more #1s than any female save Aretha. She also had 10 Hot 100 # 1s and a slew of top 20 and top 40 hits. Her 1814 album is the only album in history to place seven singles in the top 5 of the Hot 100.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 5, 2020 1:48 PM |

R43, please sit down and shut up. Janet hit paydirt with Control because it was sassy, street and sounded unlike anything any of her siblings had released before. At that point, people were like, "Hold up, THIS is little Penny from Good Times?" She actually talked about what was going on in her life, which she would continue to do throughout her career. Michael had shit all to do with it. He even copied HER sound for a while there, hiring Teddy Riley to give him that New Jack Swing sound for Dangerous that Janet popularized with her RN 1814 album.

Mariah, Celine and Whitney had the voices and the glamour.
Madonna, Janet and Britney had the showmanship and excellent pop producers.
Pop songwriters (Diane Warren, Max Martin, Quincy Jones, Nile Rodgers, Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis,, Babyface, etc) mastered an art form then that isn't matched because the pop of today is very forgettable.
Britney exploded in popularity in the year 1999/2000 but up until about 2009 she was big. I feel she should be associated more with the 2000s. Similar to how Michael Bolton had his breakthrough album in 1989 (yes I know he made music since the 70s but he had a career makeover in 1989) but was a big in the 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | October 5, 2020 10:47 PM |
But whats interesting is not many pop divas today could have that long lasting level of fame that Madonna, Cher, Barbra, Whitney, Diana, Mariah, Celine and Janet had that spanned over a decade or more. I think ageism wasn't as big back then and female artists could still be popular into late middle age. Cher had a hit in her 50s with Believe and Madonna was in her 40s with Music.
Britney's popularity was not that long in comparison to these women. The same could be said about the others like Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce, Gaga, Pink and Xtina who didn't even last as long as Britney in the charts. They are still very famous and tour but they aren't as iconic nor maintained a long period of relevancy to pop culture either. Katy Perry is comparable to Britney her career lasted almost a decade.
I can only see Taylor Swift and Rihanna who are incredibly smart business ladies lasting as long as perhaps Madonna or Cher with two/three decades of relevancy. They both managed to score hits worldwide and I definitely feel Rihanna's next album will be a high seller due to the anticipation.

Janet was obviously big in her prime. Madonna and Whitney were bigger though. Janet did influence the manufactured pop princess types who were stylish, could do hip hop dance routines and sung pop/R&B tunes and light slow ballads like Pebbles, Karyn, Jody, Vanessa, Paula (yes she copied Janet's style and swag even though she choreographed her), Alanis (her early 90s stuff), Taylor Dayne, Kylie Minogue (her 2000s stuff is more reminiscent of Madonna), Aaliyah, Jennifer Lopez, Mya, Ashanti, Britney Spears, Ciara and finally Tinashe and Normani.
Madonna's influence is stronger on Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Ke$ha, 2000s Kylie Minogue, Gwen Stefani, Darren Hayes, Pink, Dua Lipa and Carlie Rae Jepson who do pure pop and dance music and that made more of a comeback in the later 2000s though it still remained big in Europe, Asia and Australia

R82 Those âbest selling of all timeâ lists are disingenuous and misleading. First of all, the population was less, and therefore, smaller numbers of purchases. Second, the top consumers of music are usually 13-40 years old. Back in my day (Iâm an 80s-90s child), you physically had to go to a store to purchase music. It was harder to do back then. No Ubers to take you, might have to go to multiple stores until you said fuck it, and recorded a few songs off the radio, with the DJ and radio call sign wrecking the opening of the song. Now all anyone does is push a few buttons on their phone, and poof, album bought. So of course, most of the artists that are best selling are from the digital streaming era. It does not, by any means, suggest theyâre more popular or more talented. Katy Perry is on that list. That tells me all I need to know.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | October 6, 2020 12:32 AM |
Janet Jackson was really just a placeholder to curb the public's insatiable appetite for her brother. If Michael Jackson had been more prolific, told his deadbeat leeching brothers to fuck off instead of doing that bullshit Victory tour and released an album at the end of 1985 or beginning of 1986, Janet probably wouldn't have had much of a career.

I was a teen in the 90s. I have to say I do NOT remember Madonna being that ubiquitous nearly every year of the 90s. To me she was so 80s. And while I very much remember Ray of Light, I seem to recall it was a comeback record. Not according to this list! mean wasn't into pop at all, but I thought I remembered better.
That said, I do remember Mariah and Whitney. They were everywhere.
Janbot, I don't remember Janet at all, except the album that had Again.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | October 6, 2020 1:05 AM |
Madonna was everywhere in the 90s. She was hated for awhile but she was everywhere. Her comeback was coming back from selling like a mere superstar to a mega star. Erotica and Bedtime Stories weâre top 5 WW sellers for a female and this was when she was hated.
90-92-all Madonna With some Mariah 93-96- All Mariah and Whitney 96-97- all even, Celine dominates 98-99- Madonna ahead again
by Anonymous | reply 114 | October 6, 2020 1:19 AM |
I agree, R113.
I was a teen in the 90s as well, and I remember Madonna suffering a colossal backlash due to the Sex book. That backlash was so severe it affected her sales throughout the decade. She did have a comeback with Ray of Light. However, the 90s was the decade of big ballad Pop divas, R&B girl groups, grunge, and Hip Hop.
If this was the 80s, then I agree: Madonna owned that decade.

I dont get how people can bash Janet and Britney for lacking talent yet will praise Madonna. They are all on the same level vocalwise. All were manufactured with catchy but overproduced songs. All relied on dancing, gimmicks, cool factor and sex appeal. They all have distinctive voices too. They are all iconic. Marilyn Monroe wasn't the best actress but is iconic. Elvis didn't write any songs or play an instrument but is ironic.
Newsflash music is more than being a good singer. Lyrics, production and marketing play a big. Physical beauty, fashion sense and choreography too in the music video era.

R133 Madonna is a mediocre singer. You know that. Stop lying. Janet is a mediocre singer too. Britney in her youth was a better natural singer before her label made her sing out of her range. They all have good distinctive voices that are good for pop music. Janet's voice is much easier on the ears as she is a whispery crooner type. She sounded way better on Unbreakable so she improved. Madonna did improve her voice too in her 90s output. Britney sounds like a chipmunk nowadays.
But if you want real voices then you got Ariana Grande, Mariah, Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera and Pink who are trained singers. And you got Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, Brandy, Ledisi, Heather Headley and Toni Braxton who are natural singers

Madonna could never sing as good as Whitney Houston, Annie Lennox, Michael Jackson, Prince, Boy George, Anita Baker, Cyndi Lauper, Karyn White and George Michael. Madonna did sound good on Live To Tell and Like A Prayer. Janet is a mediocre singer I admit but Madonna is only marginally better. Janet sounded good on I Get Lonely, Black Cat and All For You. If it's any consolation though Paula Abdul and Kylie Minogue though manages to make both of them sound better.

Madonna, Paula, Kylie, Janet, Pebbles, Debbie and Tiffany were all products of the music video era. 80s music was notoriously overproduced. They didn't need big powerful voices or meaningful song lyrics. If the song was catchy and beat was hot all they just had to look good, dance, be pretty and fashionable or in Madonna's case shocking and sexual.
Madonna, Janet and Kylie were smart and adapted to the times. Madonna championed sexual freedom and gay rights and Janet racial equality and feminism. Janet featured Willie Ninja from the House of Ninja in one of her videos "Alright". Maddona also had vogue dancers and in her music video "Open Your Heart" had a short scene of two gay sailors. So both became gay icons early. Kylie Minogue shifted her sound to a more R&B, trance and disco and became a club fixture.

R151 Elvis was a manufactured image. He had a very limited elementary knowledge of guitars. He was mainly a frontman who just sang. Look up Scotty Moore, he was the guitatist in his band who created Elvis' signature sound by mixing rhythm and blues and country music.

You poor, misguided dear. A lot of her work from Control on is steeped in female empowerment. Whether singing about breaking away from her family to stand on her own, or leaving an abusive relationship, or exploring self worth, Janet has covered the gamut on feminism.

by Anonymous | reply 158 | October 6, 2020 2:35 AM |
R156 She had songs like "Nasty" and "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" about treating women with respect, "Control" about a young woman's desire for independence from her parents, "Anytime, Anyplace" about female sexual pleasure, songs like "Let's Wait A While" about waiting to have sex rather than pressuring your young partner into things, "Rhythm Nation", "New Agenda" and "State of the World" were all about social issues and "Together Again" and "Free Xone" were dedicated to gay and lesbian representation.
Madonna had a lot of songs on social issues too.
Both women used their platforms for social progress which I give them props.

Emphasis on "Wanted to fuck". Nobody wants to fuck Janet's dried up pussy, which, like the rest of her body has went up and down in size. That pussy has been stretched to the max. One moment it's fat because of Taco Bell, then slimmer because of Baja Fresh.
Ain't nobody want that pussy.
And her music hasn't been good since The Velvet Rope. Once Rene left, her music went to shit. She regressed and did more of that whisper coo and interludes dedicated to her pussy. Pass.

Janet's music like Beyonce is too American-centric. Their style is heavily R&B and their lyrics reflect their lives as black women with the slang and cultural terminology included. They aren't musically talented enough like Toni Braxton, Sade, Tracey Chapman or Lauryn Hill to build a strong following about European R&B or neo-soul fans.
Whitney and Mariah had more typical love ballads or upbeat dance songs that translated worldwide. It's similar to as to why Michael Jackson was more successful than Prince who had more socially conscious and political music with complex lyrics.
Rihanna outsells Beyonce because her music is less culturally specific. It's pure dance music and that translates better just like with Katy Perry. Taylor Swift makes typical love and breakup songs which also helped her.
Simplicity and universality sells better worldwide
by Anonymous | reply 193 | October 6, 2020 3:34 AM |
I think the Whitneys, Mariahs, Celines, and Christinas have falsely made us believe that having a five octave range that swoops and soars and belts and whistles and does all those runs and key changes makes one a great singer, but it is meaningless when it's all showboating and lacking in substance. The Peggy Lees and Sarah Vaughns and Julie Londons didn't have soaring voices but they knew how to interpret a song and hit you in the gut.
Janet-- I like her dance songs, but her voice is barely above a whisper and seems incidental to the music. It's fine for dance music because the dance beat is what really matters, but in her ballads and slow tempo songs, I can barely hear what she's saying.
by Anonymous | reply 194 | October 6, 2020 3:35 AM |
Oversinging is annoying. Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson were the worst and sometimes made my ears bleed. Patti, Celine, Mariah and Whitney went overboard at times too. I love soothing voices like Sade, Diana Ross, Aaliyah, Vanessa Williams and Dionne Warwick. Janet's voice is barely legible but I find it pleasant unlike Britney Spears who's chipmunk voice gets grating at times especially in her newer stuff

Mariah's voice was much more pleasant in her early years by the time of Emancipation of Mimi I feel her voice got so nasally and the whistling annoying. Trying way too hard to sound sexy and seductive too and failing.
Whitney's voice was beautiful. Her 80s pop music didn't really fit her voice though. She had to oversing because the loud bells and whistles production was overpowering her voice. Her live vocals were much better.

R198 Christina was the most talented of that late 90s teen pop boom. She oversings but she actually is smart and has a lot of creative control over her music. She even fought for her first album to be R&B rather than dance-pop to compete with Britney. She certainly isn't the voice of any generation though.

R204 A lot of American artists don't go to a proper music school like in The UK before they are signed. I think that makes a load of difference. Technically Britney Spears had a decent singing voice but never learned to control it or sing in a proper tone. Same with Christina having no control and choosing songs not suited to her. Jessica Simpson is just a gospel church singer who screams. Justin Timberlake's vocals are weak and thin and he doesn't do ballads anymore for a good reason. They needed better guidance as kids and as they aged into adulthood got arrogant and never seemed proper training. Beyonce actually improved her voice from what I hear

Male singers arenât nearly as scrutinized. Most of them are vocally middling, at best. R212 Not anymore but she had a much deeper tone in Bottom of My Broken Heart, Beat Goes On and Born To Make You Happy that was pretty pleasant. By her second album she started laying the baby doll affect stronger. Her natural voice is deep but she never learned a proper technique.
by Anonymous | reply 213 | October 6, 2020 4:10 AM |

NSYNC was a white New Jack Swing group as was New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys. All worked with black songwriters and producers too. Max Martin the main songwriter for NSYNC and BSB admitted his love for New Jack Swing and Robyn and Britney were basically his attempts at combining Janet Jackson and The Spice Girls into one package. NSYNC took it further by covering Janet songs and having rappers featured in their songs.
JT took influences from R&B and found the best producers like The Neptunes and Timbaland. Justified was filled with MJ reject songs. Future Sex/Love Sounds was basically a Prince record. 20/20 Experience was his attempt at appealing to an adult contemporary audience with lounge elevator music.

R222 Yeah I don't get it either. But Britney, Timberlake and Christina weren't even the most talented on The Mickey Mouse Club. JC did have star quality but lacked ambition. There were plenty of other Mousketeers that could sing their asses off but went nowhere. Disney didn't really promote them well when that era of MMC was airing.
Disney lowered their expectations because of the surprise success of Hilary Duff who couldn't sing, dance or act. They realized teen consumers don't really care about talent because as long as they emotionally connect to the idol they will buy the merchandise. The Olsen twins already proved this theory already but Hilary really set that formula.

It's really the magic of marketing. The stage moms are the ambitious ones who tell Hollywood that their kids are willing to day anything to become a star and Hollywood makes money off of them. Hollywood doesn't bother with kids or actors who don't fully cooperate right from the start and do as they've been told.

Whitney tried to move to R&B when the pop diva era ended, but she sounded terrible singing anything other than pop. She had no soul. She sounded like Celine or Barbra trying to sing R&B. She was not a versatile artist like Christina or Ariana, who are white girls but can sing both pop and R&B music very convincingly.

Janet, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Beyonce, Ariana, Timberlake and Christina don't have soul and sing R&B too. R&B isnt about having soul as it's not soul music. R&B is really just pop music that combines elements of dance, urban, soul and blues and is primarily targeted to a black audience.
Soul music is Marvin Gaye, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Bilal, Jill Scott and D'Angelo.

I remember Mariah and Madonna being all over the radio throughout the 90s.

R244: Whitney made an R&B record in 1990 (the Iâm Your Baby Tonight album) - how is that when the diva era ended? It had barely started. The songs suited her voice perfectly too.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | October 6, 2020 9:51 PM |
Madonna, Whitney and Mariah were everywhere in the early 90s. Madonna released perhaps her most signature song since Like A Virgin -- Vogue. Mariah made her debut and scored 4 number one hits from her album. And Whitney slayed everyone in 1992 with The Bodyguard. I do remember Janet Jackson, mostly from the Janet album (I consider Rhythm Nation more of an late 80s album).
After the Sex book, Madonna took a major hit and didn't fully recover until Ray of Light where she reinvented herself as the Kabbalah earth mother. Bedtime Stories was a return to form for her, but it didn't achieve the success like her earlier albums. With Bedtime Stories she was riding on the R&B wave that was popular at the time, working with producers mostly associated with Mariah, Whitney, Mary J., TLC, Toni Braxton, .etc. Celine was majorly successful, but she was more of an album artist than a singles artist, so a lot of her success went under the radar during the 90s until her success with "My Heart Will Go On."
The 90s was a great decade for women in Pop and R&B.

The person who continues to say Whitney had no soul is ridiculous. Yeah, her 80s pop music was soulless, but as a vocalist, Whitney came from the same school as her predecessors: Aretha, Gladys, Patti, Cousin Dionne. Her voice is Gospel trained which is the foundation of soul singing. So, no, Whitney was very soulful and the greatest vocalist of her generation.
"You Give Good Love" and "Saving All My Love" were R&B/Quiet Storm jams. It wasn't until she released the "Whitney" album that she began to get a backlash. (Keep in mind, this was around the time Anita Baker was burning up the charts with Rapture and many critics compared the two all the time, the majority of them favoring Anita.)

R265 Madonna had FOUR #2 peaking albums in the states in the 90s and they hung around, instead debuting at #1 and falling like a rock
In fact, Ray of Light debuted at #2 behind the massive Titanic soundtrack but it had the highest first week sales by a female artist ever at that point, the previous winner was Janet Jackson for her 1993 Janet album so Madonna sold more copies with ROL than Janet but because of competition, Janet debuted at #1 while ROL at #2
It's not the peak of an album or single or movie but the longevity on the charts
Cher, Aretha, Dolly, Cyndi and Tina never had a #1 album in the states but Private Dancer for instance sold shitloads and stayed on the charts for three years in the 80s
Also since 2000, Madonna has had a whopping SIX further #1 albums in the states

Iâd go with the Sâil Suffisait DâAimer album from about 1998 and Encore Un Soir from 2016. by Anonymous | reply 279 | October 6, 2020 11:44 PM |
R278: itâs funny Iâd never really thought about that but now youâve said that I totally see it. Weirdly I think she sounds more awkward on her more recent English songs. Probably because back in the 90s everything was so controlled by Sony and they had her sing each line 50 times till she nailed the pronunciation.
by Anonymous | reply 280 | October 6, 2020 11:48 PM |
R280, her accent is so strong, it gets in the way of her songs a lot of times. I'm sure Sony was VERY controlling over Celine, Mottola controlled all his artists. Speaking of which, I wonder how Mariah felt when Celine was outselling her by the middle/end of the decade. Maybe that's why she found the need to criticize Celine's performance with Aretha in her memoir.
by Anonymous | reply 281 | October 6, 2020 11:51 PM |
R281 Of course. Mariah is a very jealous cow. Celine usurped her and to add insult to injury, Madonna was steadily gaining after 1993. Celine was also pissing on Mariah World wide.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | October 7, 2020 12:14 AM |
In all honesty, had Mariah continued making more albums like "Music Box" her sales would rival Celine Dion's. But she decided to move more towards R&B/Hip Hop Soul, and her sales took a hit because of it. Celine may have began outselling Mariah by the end of the 90s, however, Mariah was able to survive longer as a chart-topper as she was able to transition into a different sound. Celine hit her peak in the late 90s.
Celine wasn't flexible as Whitney and Mariah, the latter could navigate through Pop and R&B more easily. Celine pretty much could only do Adult Contemporary, and by the early 2000s, that sound was dying out. Plus, Celine toured far more than Mariah, so that certainly helped with her sales throughout the 90s.

Not to mention, Madonna's huge 80s career, that you may have heard about...
by Anonymous | reply 285 | October 7, 2020 12:39 AM |
That's not true, R284.
I remember vividly in the 90s when all the fraus (who made up the majority of the Celine Dion fans) complaining about how they didn't like Mariah's new sexualize image and sound, and liked her better during "Music Box." Mariah moving away from adult contemporary affected her sales a great deal. That's not even debatable. It had nothing to do with her potentially tanking with it when she was already a great success in that genre. It had everything to do with rebelling against Tommy Motolla's strict control, and the fact she enjoyed doing R&B and Hip Hop-infused music more than Adult Contemporary.
And the fact that she didn't tour much was due to her inability to reproduce the same level of vocals as she did on her album, night after night. Her voice is very fragile, and she suffered from stage fright. So she didn't tour as frequently as her peers. However, her concerts during her prime were successful and sold out. Not to mention she was a huge draw in Asia.

R237 uh Madonna's Ray of Light album in 1998 had the highest US first week sales of any album by a female artist in chart history but it missed #1 and debited at #2 because of the Titanic soundtrack
I'm no genius, but I'd rather sell 380,000 albums my first week, like ROL did, and debut at #2 that sell 100,000 copies on a less competitive week and debut at #2, like many albums in the 90s did

R290, Payola doesn't explain her three diamond albums and worldwide album sales. Payola doesn't explain her success post-Mottola with The Emancipation of Mimi. And most of those articles aren't credible at all. None of them are written by a musical historian or legitimate music critic. They're written by gossip columnists who have axes to grind.
If Mariah was just a singles-artist then the payola label would carry more weight. The fact remains: Mariah sold a shitload of singles and albums during the 90s, as well as the mid-2000s.
by Anonymous | reply 293 | October 7, 2020 1:02 AM |

Her payola is legend and was included in a NY AG case. Billboard had to change many rules due to her cheating.
by Anonymous | reply 294 | October 7, 2020 1:10 AM |
"Singles translated into album sales." That's not how it worked back then (hell, it doesn't even work like that today -- ask Rhianna). There were many artists who were successful selling singles but it didn't translate into album sales. And Mariah's debut album is 9x platinum in the United States. It hasn't officially been certified as a diamond album, but it technically is at this point. The other stuff you wrote isn't worth responding too; it's just gossip by fans of other pop singers that are vexed by her sales.
It's clear you don't like any of the black female pop singers: Whitney doesn't have soul; "Jabba" only plays at state fairs and eats KFC; Mariah is a "payola queen." Somehow all the major pop stars are illegitimate other than Madonna and Celine Dion, white women. Everyone else either cheated for their success, mediocre, or complete failures with no creativity or talent. Your posts about Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey reeks of latent racism, insecurities and jealousy.
You can't discuss this topic fairly and objectively because your fandom for Madonna clouds your analysis.
Plus, Celine toured far more than Mariah, so that certainly helped with her sales throughout the 90s.
Celine was a big touring force and had tours that grossed over $100 million. Mariah never made $100 million with a tour because she wasn't a big draw. That's why Celine's estimated net worth is $800 million and Mariah's is $300 million.
The big touring acts become mega-wealthy. It's nice to hear your song on the radio and maybe go #1, but that's small beans compared to grossing over $100 million with a tour.

Celine Dion had a huge Boomer fanbase, and also people who were even older than that. She crossed a lot of age demographics that the other pop divas didn't.
Madonna, for example, was mostly a Gen X thing. A lot of Boomers hated her, as we can see on Datalounge.

by Anonymous | reply 298 | October 7, 2020 1:57 AM |
R296: Celine became a big concert draw once she began doing her Vegas residency.
Mariah was a huge draw during the 90s -- her Tokyo Dome concert in 1996 broke records -- she just didn't tour as often as Celine and Whitney. You don't sell that amount of singles and albums worldwide like Mariah and people refuse to see you in concerts performing those hits. Mariah's failure is that she refused to establish herself as a major touring force early in her career. Whitney and Celine were doing major international tours during the peaks of their careers while Mariah didn't.
If we're talking about the last ten years, no, Mariah isn't a great draw. She has regressed as a performer since her mental breakdown back in the early 2000s -- and that includes her drastic vocal decline. She's lazy as a performer and half-asses a lot of her songs live due to her vocal decline. Whereas back during "Music Box" and "Daydream" she was far more energetic and comfortable as a performer on stage.
Finally, it's interesting how you use the lowest estimate of Mariah's net worth when it ranges around $300-$600 million. Frankly, at the end of the day, Mariah is set for life and doesn't have to tour or perform at concerts ever again if she chooses. Whether it's $300 or $600, she's an insanely wealthy woman; a true rags-to-riches story.

by Anonymous | reply 301 | October 7, 2020 2:00 AM |
R300, Adele has that same type of demographic reach. It's why her albums sell like crazy with each new release. Boomers and Gen-Xers are big consumers of Adult Contemporary Pop.

R286: yeah as a Mariah fan at the time I remember it doing my head in when people would say she went slutty, lost her clothes and went R&B to sell records. As if. Doing that drove away the housewives who were the biggest part of her fan base at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 303 | October 7, 2020 2:13 AM |
R290: did you ever see her live during her 90s peak? She was up there with Whitney at her late 80s/early 90s peak vocally. Listen to the Daydream tour songs on her latest Rarities album or find then on YouTube. âActively terribleâ perhaps 1998 onwards but definitely not in 1995/6.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | October 7, 2020 2:17 AM |
R301: itâs odd. Mariah seemed to lose her effortless vocal ability between 1996 and 1997. Think Iâve joked about this before on another thread but itâs like Tommy Mottola cut a vocal chord or cursed her with a spell the day she walked out on him.
by Anonymous | reply 305 | October 7, 2020 2:29 AM |
Well, I finally watched the whole video and Iâm shocked about how much Mariah shows up, I just have little or no memory of her at all. I donât think where ever I listened to music played her much. Maybe she was a west coast thing? I literally knew only a few of those songs. She always seemed very niche and I found her very unattractive.
Proud of Enya that she showed up three times, thatâs very impressive. I donât think I realized that Faith Hill and Shania Twain weâre different people, I think I just saw blond country. Whitney really relied on soundtracks quite a bit, but somehow never captured becoming a movie star. Nice to see the indie type girls like Alanis and Sarah at the end of the decade. Celine really was the power house of the decade. Christmas albums shouldnât count.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | October 7, 2020 3:09 AM |
r306 you seriously have little or no memory of Mariah in the 90s? How is that even possible? She was everywhere in that decade.
Thank you for singling out this racist piece of trash.

I like how you slid Janet into that group when no one is even talking about her. Janet isn't fit to lick Mariah or Whitney's boots.
Mariah and Whitney could sing. Janet... well, Janet had Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and her famous brother.
Janet isn't fit to lick Mariah or Whitney's boots.
But enough about your perverted proclivities.
Janet Jackson wouldn't have to stoop to do such things, as she is (and was) good friends with both women. Whitney loved Janet and even covered her song Control in concert in the late '80s, and Mariah has always spoken favorably of Janet. Besides, Janet is in the RNR Hall of Fame, and they are not. Janet is the only one of the three (and the first female in history) to have five consecutive #1 albums on the Billboard 200 and to produce seven top 5 Hot 100 hits from a solo album. Janet has an Academy Award nom, and they do not. And so on and so on and so on...
No, but Britney has a better voice than Janet. So does Paula, for that matter.
You stupid fucking peasant. To even utter the name Britney Spears in the same sentence as Janet Jackson other than to say that she was clearly inspired by Janet above all others is sacrilege. Britney can't sing for shit now, and she never could. The best she could ever muster was obtaining Janet castoff songs (Cathy Dennis originally wrote Toxic for Janet and The Neptunes wrote I'm A Slave For U and Boys for Janet). And, for as much as I love Paula Abdul, she has nowhere near the vocal capabilities of Janet Jackson, and to say otherwise is utterly foolish. Janet's background harmonies slay not only Paula's but Madonna's too. Paula could never pull this off...
by Anonymous | reply 314 | October 7, 2020 3:59 PM |
Nobody considered Janet a great singer, then or now. She whispers. Sheâs more of a dancer and entertainer. Which is fine. Sheâs enjoyable and good in her lane, kind of the equivalent of Adam Sandler in acting.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | October 7, 2020 4:45 PM |
Janet is not a better singer than Madonna in any universe. Especially after the Evita voice training, Madonna can blow Janet out of the water even though she's not even the greatest singer herself. Janet sounds the same on almost every song she sings. But I do think she's at least one or two levels above Paula Abdul.

No.
The gritty rock vocals of Black Cat are not the same as the sassy Nasty vocals are not the same as the girlish vocals of When I Think of You are not the sultry belting of I Get Lonely, etc. For evidence of her vocal versatility, look no further than the 7th top 5 hit from Rhythm Nation 1814 - the #1 single Love Will Never Do (Without You). She sings the first verse in a deeper register, then switches it up to her higher register for the second verse. The background harmonies on this track are also flawless.

Well, when you've publicly humiliated yourself the way the two Ms have as of late (a botched New Year's Eve performance, falling down the stairs at the Brit Awards, horrid plastic surgery, embarrassing social media antics, Nick Cannon, the sloppy Drake kiss, etc.), I guess becoming a mom, being inducted into the RNR Hall of Fame and selling out a positively reviewed Vegas stint after having toured the world the previous three years to more glowing reviews kinda pales by comparison, right? NOT!

Imagine spending your whole life hyping an entertainer twenty years past her expiration. Whom you donât know and have no connection to.
Hereâs the reality: like Kylie, Janet was handed a career. As a matter of fact, they are almost parallel, with Janet being more popular in the USA and Kylie in Europe. They were afforded music careers because they were pretty and already famous. Kylie and Janet were child actresses, like Hilary Duff. They made good pop music because they showed up to the studio and excellent producers wrote their songs and made their vocals sound good.
There is no shame in this, but letâs not pretend these are trained musicians who spent years on their craft. They were attractive ladies with connections who could passably sing (or whispercoo). They both learned their craft along the way. I give Kylie slightly more credit for singing live-ish in concert. Janet is a much better dancer. But they are comparable talents.

Black Cat has garnered praise from multiple rock icons, from Tommy Lee to Lemmy Kilmister.
[italic]Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead intended to record a version of "Black Cat" with Janet Jackson, but was prohibited. Lemmy stated, "I wanted to do a version of 'Black Cat' with her, but Sony wouldn't let me. You could tell from the video that she was having a good time, that this loud rock music is what she really wanted to be doing. I love that fuckin' song...Great fuckin' song that but the record company wouldn't let it be possible." Lemmy later revealed Jackson as his most desired collaboration and planned to record a new version with her for his unreleased solo album Lemmy & Friends, saying "I want to get Janet Jackson to do this great single called 'Black Cat.â[/italic]
Dave Navarro, Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme and Vernon Reid from Living Colour all played on various mixes of the song. BC has also been remade and covered by various rock acts. In other words, what a few ninnies on an obscure gay internet forum think of its rock merit is really a non-factor.

When you are an icon, relevancy is moot. Your place in pop culture is set in stone. Her influence is perennial. Her last album made her one of only three artists (and the only black artist) to have a #1 album in each of the last four decades. She was just inducted into the RNR HOF.
So sit down and shut up.

Just to stir the pot. Released on August 28, 1990, "Black Cat" was written by Jackson herself and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female, making Janet the only artist in history to have Grammy nominations spanning the Pop, Dance, Rock, Rap, and R&B categories.

Ok. So much bullshit has been spewed on this thread.
Young people know who Janet is. The world knows who she is. Young people know who Prince and Michael are also. There is a certain level one can reach where they are eternally a part of pop culture. Janet, Madonna, Michael, Prince, Freddie Mercury, Marilyn, Elvis, etc. are eternal pop culture fixtures.
Mariah sales, while not on Music Box or Daydream level, weâre still great throughout the 90s. Butterfly sold a lot less than her previous albums, but still sold over 10 million copies. Thatâs good. You all are acting like she sold 10k copies. The following year her #1s album sold over 16 million copies.
You all are acting like she faded. She was always big and did well.
And to say someone who sold all those albums wasnât a draw... give me a break. Everyone knows when she would do a concert it would SELL, she didnât tour because she didnât like it and is LAZY.
by Anonymous | reply 359 | October 8, 2020 11:50 PM |
Also, Mariahs image and sound change turned many off. My mother owned all her albums until Butterfly and didnât like the singles from that one. Before Butterfly, she would listen to her all the time, especially her Unplugged album and Daydream. She always blasted Daydream.
I am the one who bought Butterfly and played it and she hated it. Then she hated her Rainbow album, and donât get her started on Glitter! By the time Charmbracelet came she was over her. Not even Emancipation of MiMi got her that interested, although she liked We Belong Together a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 360 | October 8, 2020 11:55 PM |
I think as time passes, sales become less important than iconic songs. It's similar to huge movie stars from bygone eras who weren't in movies that are still relevant and are thus largely forgotten. Gene Tierney for example.
That's sort of Janet to me. She was absolutely huge in her day. But, besides other pop stars who aren't in any way representative of the general population, she's not remembered all that much. It also hurts she doesn't have that signature song (Mariah's Christmas song, Whitney's I Will Always Love You, Madonna's Vogue for examples) that we still hear today on singing shows, seasonally, or on the radio.

âThe album received three Grammy Award nominations, including Best Pop Vocal Album, winning Best Dance Recording for its title track. It became Jackson's fifth consecutive album to top the Billboard 200 albums chart in the United States and had the biggest opening week sales of her career. Upon its release, it also had the second highest first week sales for a female artist in Nielsen Soundscan history. It reached the top five of most countries internationally and was the biggest selling international pop album of the year in Japan. â

Lead single "All for You" was one of Jackson's most successful singles and broke multiple airplay records. In the US, it was the biggest hit of the year, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks and became a top ten hit on the majority of singles charts worldwide. "Someone to Call My Lover" reached number three on the Hot 100 and within the top twenty internationally while "Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)" peaked within the top forty in most territories. "Come On Get Up" was also released as a single in Japan. In promotion for the album, Jackson was declared MTV's inaugural Icon, receiving a televised tribute titled MTV Icon: Janet Jackson. The special honored Jackson's contribution within music and popular culture, in recognition of "one of the most influential and beloved tastemakers in contemporary pop." During that period, Jackson was presented numerous career accolades, including the American Music Award's Award of Merit, TMF Award's Lifetime Achievement Award, and Recording Academy's Governor's Award.

R374/R377/R383 is telling the truth, and the racist Madonna-worshipping sissies are seething.
Bitches, get over it. Janet's ALL FOR YOU made her the first female to have five consecutive #1 albums. The Grammy-winning title track was the longest running Hot 100 #1 single of 2001 and broke numerous radio airplay records, some of which were not broken until a decade later by Lady Gaga's Born This Way. ALL FOR YOU gave Janet the biggest first week sales of her career, some 15 years AFTER she had become a bonafide superstar (that's more than a decade for the slow people in the back). MTV declared her their first ICON that year, and she was presented with several awards during the era for her remarkable career, including the NARAS Governor's Award. Her tour to support the album garnered 12 million viewers when broadcast on HBO and is STILL copied stylistically by just about every pop and R&B diva around today for their own tours. In 1999, Janet garnered her 9th Hot 100 #1 with Doesn't Really Matter from the Nutty Professor II soundtrack, which made her the first artist to have a #1 in the 80s, the 90s and the 2000s.
In other words, she was far from "over" when she was picked to headline the 2004 Super Bowl, and to say otherwise just shows your ignorance and/or jealousy.
It also hurts she doesn't have that signature song
Huh? Are you living on Earth 2? Janet Jackson doesn't have a signature song? The fuck? What Have You Done For Me Lately? Nasty? When I Think of You? Rhythm Nation? Escapade? Together Again? These are signature songs, darling. Are you retarded?

She was a big deal, even around the time Velvet Rope came out. People loved Janet. Iâm not even a fan of many of her Songs, but to act like she was a nobody is a lie. And DL does this for every black artist. Every single one. The only one they show some respect to us Whitney.

All for You did not sell anywhere near 10 million copies. According to this website that actually investigates sales, it sold 7.3 million globally but that is INCLUDING singles sales. By comparison, Madonna's Music sold 13.8 million copies globally with singles sales. That's almost double what Janet's album sold.

R393 that is not including single sales. Sigh. You racists donât quit.

R394, do you know how to read? YES, that site includes singles sales. It sold 7.3 million copies WITH singles sales.
by Anonymous | reply 396 | October 9, 2020 2:26 AM |
According to the site, the album itself sold between 6.2 and 6.3 million copieis. I'm sorry that these stats are breaking your heart but pointing them out doesn't make someone "racist".

They were saying that Janet doesn't have one specific song that really towers over the others. Mariah has All I Want for Christmas, Whitney has I Will Always Love You, Celine has My Heart Will Go On, etc. But Madonna and Janet don't have one song that really dominates their catalogue at those levels. They have many songs that sold a lot but none that really dominated the others.

Janet was popular through All For You. That tittie flop really wrecked her career. Then she went Jackson weird with marrying the sheik and having a baby at her age.
by Anonymous | reply 399 | October 9, 2020 3:10 AM |
One thing I will give Janet credit for is that her albums were ALBUMS. They tended to have themes and almost told stories at times. They were also never short, where you feel like itâs not worth the price. Itâs almost like she was creating a film through sound.
All For You was 74 minutes long.

Omg even in the comments of that website r393 used are saying the numbers are wrong on many things and the site keeps altering numbers lmaoooo
Maybe try a reliable source

Janet's career went totally down the toilet after she exposed herself at that Super bowl. She was never mainstream again after that.

R401, If you had read further, you would have seen the creators of the website destroying the claims of those fans.
by Anonymous | reply 403 | October 9, 2020 3:28 AM |
r403 you used an obscure website. Sweetie, nice try. They do not know better than Billboard themself.
On a positive [honest] note, NY Times gave All For You a positive review back in 2001.

Sure, Jab. The seventy five or so posts you have in this thread, all screeching psychotically about your idol, would say otherwise.

R404, how would Billboard know anything about global sales? It doesn't. It strictly knows about American sales.

I can't believe Madonna's "Evita" album was a top seller in 1996, or any other year.
Otherwise, I own quite a few of these albums.

Is All For You the song where in the video she's traveling around the world? I like that song!
by Anonymous | reply 409 | October 9, 2020 6:36 AM |
That was âRunaway,â a song that gave Janet the distinction of being the first female to debut a single in the top ten of the Hot 100.

Lmao r411
Because I dared to defend Janet I am Janbot too đ
No, just someone who states FACTS. Even provided articles from REAL SITES, not obscure ones, which showed her 2001 album debuted with 605k albums sold in a week, the second highest female debut ever (at that time). So the lie that her career was dead post 1993 is bullshit.
And donât get me started on the âno white peopleâ troll.
by Anonymous | reply 412 | October 9, 2020 11:54 AM |
^Yes, they are a tiring lot. The jealousy is so potent that you can smell it. đ And anyone who says that Janet Jackson was over in 1993 is either a troll or too stupid to live (not that these things are mutually exclusive, of course).
by Anonymous | reply 413 | October 9, 2020 1:51 PM |
Madonna has more radio friendly, listenable music than Janet overall, but Janet does have some great songs and big hits.
I always tell people they should sit and listen to her "All For You" album from start to finish. It is actually a terrific album, and very positive and light hearted. At the time, critics mostly praised it for how "uplifting" and "positive" it was vs. her previous album, "The Velvet Rope", which was very dark.
Some people just hated how overly sexual a lot of the songs were.

Wow, Jabba has completely gone unhinged and is talking to itself.
You might want to vary your language from post to post if you have any hope of anyone buying otherwise, dear.

It's so fucking RICH when Janbot accuses someone else of being a troll for calling him out as a. Jabba, you're deflection isn't fooling anyone except the 3rd or 4th portion of your psyche.
