I Want to be Underwhelmed, Autumn 2020

by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 2, 2020 5:35 PM |
I’m extremely underwhelmed when people start a part 2 thread and don’t link back to part 1.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 2, 2020 5:38 PM |
This isn’t part 2. It’s part googol.

R8 the person who started that thread also failed to link to the previous part. Apparently you people want me to be really really fuckin underwhelmed.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 2, 2020 7:35 PM |
I wish I hadn't started this thread, as I am currently feeling overwhelmed by the cuntescence of r10 and r6. And this isn't a part 2 thread, bitch.

In a stroke of luck yesterday I was in the cleaning supply aisle just as they were re-stocking the store brand clorox disinfecting wipes.
I took two cannisters. The stock guy said "Limit one per customer." I nodded and kept moving.
I went through self check out and no alarms or bells went off when I scanned my two cannisters of wipes.
I just strolled out of the store without incident.
Whew!

by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 4, 2020 11:01 PM |
Oh, so you can look forward to being whelmed a year from now.
Turning 60 wasn't so bad, really. The problem with it is that it's not as though you turn 60 and then stop. Those birthdays just keep on coming, at increasing speed, and suddenly you can see 70 on the horizon. It's very whelming.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 5, 2020 12:46 AM |
I received the following sentence in a group text: “The irony will be when they use that to justify their floccinaucinihilipilification of the pandemic.”
I just want you to know what kind of classy people I talk to when I’m not talking to you lot.

I wish I had a Waldorf salad.

Also, is it ok to have leftover spaghetti bolognese for breakfast?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 10, 2020 10:12 AM |
It is, R46. Please yourself.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 10, 2020 10:16 AM |
Tagliatelle alla bolognese is better, r46, or pappardelle, but if it's already left over, the spaghetti version is fine.
The Bolognese, however, take a hard line, contending that there is no such thing as spaghetti bolognese.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 10, 2020 12:16 PM |
I appreciate the information r48, but you include far too many options and too much information in your post. I am now teetering on the edge of whelmed. But I do appreciate the answer.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 10, 2020 12:24 PM |
Eat your spaghetti, r49.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 10, 2020 12:25 PM |
I opted for the larger Major Dickason's Blend (now 18 oz., btw). It was on sale for a dollar more than the 10.5 oz. size, so I bought two bags. I'm much happier now that I don't grind the beans. Much less mess. Tastes the same IMO.

My mother has arranged a photoshoot for her best friend as a birthday present for her 60th anniversary. The affair is taking place two apartments away from mine. I am whelmed. They're both massive cunts and I suspect that eventually they're going to intrude on me, demanding that I have my portrait taken too while the photographer is still there. Probably with a cat in my arms. I do not want this to happen.

When I was a child, I read the Maggie and Jiggs comic strip ("Bringing Up Father") in our local paper. Jiggs was periodically afflicted with gout, which was depicted by showing his elevated foot wrapped in a big bandage. It would be many years before I knew what gout actually was.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 10, 2020 4:07 PM |
When I had my first gout attack, I did not know what it was. I thought I had been bitten by a spider in my sleep. it was not in my big toe it was in my ankle. It was beet red.

Yes, R63! Have you ever gone through a period where you just hated everyone and let them know it in your younger years? Well I went through a rough time. I feel a lot better and have learned from my mistakes, but it's going to be a challenge.

London.
Drove out to a suburban supermarket in the driving rain late last night to buy inks for my printer, they didn't have any so I bought a new one. Spent most the morning setting it up....connecting, registering...on and on it went. Not sure on the scanner. The colouring (I tried a few old photos) turns out very gray - which makes sense for this era. Everyone loves gray these days.
Bagel w smoked salmon for lunch. The salmon although expensive wasn't very good. I'm giving up on buying smoked salmon. It's always shite these days.

Good idea, r91.
I have my issues with the "Goodwill" store that excepts donations but I'll go through it and see if they're accepting good re-usable sewing implements. Should the old thread be thrown out though? I have no idea what to do with the old buttons and needles, too.
Actually as I was typing those words , I'm wavering. Maybe I should hang on to it.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | October 17, 2020 2:25 PM |
Vintage buttons ate ALL the rage. If the threads and needles are in good condition, then they're good to go and find a new mistress. Or you could learn a new skill in this COVID era :)

I have one piece of bread, chicken salad, deli turkey and sliced cheddar cheese. I am thinking of making an open faced sandwich with the cheddar melted on top. Can’t decide on chicken salad or turkey. I suppose I could cut the piece of bread in two and have half of each. It’s a pretty small slice of bread though.

As of today, I'm officially one week into a round of Whole30, which I'm doing as a partner to a friend who requested my help as a support person. It hasn't been hard so far, with one exception -- no soda. So I compromised. And by "compromised," I mean "cheated." I'm allowing myself one glass of Coke Zero every day at noon. What my friend doesn't know won't hurt him.

My cat is morbidly obese (not my fault, she was like that when I adopted her last summer) and can’t reach to groom her luxuriant ass fur so if I don’t bathe her she smells like a New York subway stairs. When she finally gets down to a healthier BMI she’ll be able to clean herself. But her cat shampoo (Hyponic natural therapy hypoallergenic) gives her fur a really nice texture and fragrance you’re not going to get from cat spit.

Hi JackJackson at r183.
Appian Way rings a bell, but I've not tried it.
As you may now remember, Chef Boyardee box pizza comes with sauce, dough that you have to mix and set, and granular woodchips, aka "parmesan cheese". I added provolone and mozzarella, onion, mushrooms and hamburger pennies.
And now I'm deflating and crashing...

Went to the supermarket. We're about to go into lockdown and I could see the pasta was getting depleted. The last lockdown it was one of those things that you couldn't buy, so I bought way too much and I already have too much that I'd forgotten about. Won't have to buy any more for about two years.
South Kensington which had become so sad during and after the last lockdown was throbbing with energy again. Early evening. All the lights were on in the cafes. All full again. Lots of flirtiness and it's all going to be shut down again.
Seems that whenever things cheer up here, they come down on us with new rules.

R194, here. The desk has been assembled. It took a bit of time (lots of screws) but it went pretty smoothly. I really like it. It has a shelf tower that can go on either the left or the right. I'm trying to decide where to put it now that it's together. Its much longer than the desk I'm currently using. I've shared the link below. The room divider may go up tomorrow once I decide where the desk will go and set up my computer and monitors.
Thanks for taking an interest. I'm, well, whelmed!

R194 R269 Thanks for the link and pictures. Great looking desk; i need a nap just thinking about how much effort it took.
Please keep us posted on the room divider.

I found a programme called Good Witch while browsing Netflix. I am now obsessed. Teenagers in it act like elderly church ladies and every second person seems to be psychic, while remaining utterly tedious. Nothing happens. It may be the most underwhelming thing I have ever watched.

Of course it's underwhelming. It's a series from the Hallmark Channel, your destination for underwhelming entertainment. I just watched one of its thoroughly underwhelming Christmas movies, which have already taken over its broadcast schedule.

A salad is neither a boy nor a girl.

by Anonymous | reply 281 | November 2, 2020 9:07 PM |
Jesus, you morons. A oyster in its shell is called a dressed oyster. They’re hard to eat, but they stay fresh a little longer which is important for poor people.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | November 2, 2020 9:32 PM |
So a dressed oyster po-boy is that sandwich, only the oyster is still in the shell? Sounds hard to eat.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | November 2, 2020 9:46 PM |
I agree, R283. If you don't take the oyster out of its shell before you put it in the bread, wouldn't you chip a tooth?

Googling, I learned that the car dashboard dates from the horse-and-carriage era. A wooden board was placed in front of the carriage driver to protect him from mud and sleet dashing up from the horses’ hooves. Same thing with the first automobiles. This evolved into our modern dashboards where we find our driving instruments.

R336 Yes! I keep Pedialyte in the fridge to supplement my handful of almonds every day.
by Anonymous | reply 338 | November 6, 2020 1:07 AM |
R334, R335 I live in Australia and go frequently barefoot and I do get cracked heels if I don't look after them. I tried pumice stone and pedi egg and the manual metal scraper.
The metal scraper removed excess skin but it left a rough surface which gets dirty easily.
The Dr Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Foot Filer (cost approx $35.49) smooths the skin down but you need to use it frequently (weekly). I use it in conjunction with a thick sorbalin-type cream to 'bind the cracks' together and lubricate the skin. I'm very happy with it.

by Anonymous | reply 344 | November 6, 2020 1:46 AM |
R343, aptly underwhelming: oatmeal, cream cheese on raisin toast, soup, tuna sandwiches, pbj sandwiches, grilled cheese, baked beans. When I do cook it’s usually baked chicken or pork chops with a baked potato and a green vegetable. I will cook enough for 3 or 4 meals. I miss salad but it’s a lot of work and goes bad too quickly to make in big batches. I splurge on Sunday mornings with eggs and bacon or sausage.

London.
I bought a landline phone from Amazon that stopped working within hours so I had to return it to a little shop near Hammersmith Bridge, (which is falling down, so you can't cross it, but I didn't want to cross it so it doesn't matter). Big kerfuffle at the shop scanning into some machine and God knows what else.
Walked back along the Thames. Lovely Autumn smell in the air. Kicking the leaves as I went. Terribly gay I felt.
Went into a sort of fancy supermarket/deli to buy some jars I'd bought earlier this year. He said I was lucky because he was putting them away, so I had to rifle through a box of them. I bought some of what looked like Prosciutto, I asked him what it was exactly, he said he didn't know in English. So I said what language do you speak and he said Romanian and I said I don't speak Romanian, neither did the other guy who was having an incredibly involved conversation with.
We're supposed to be in 'Lockdown' but everywhere was very lively and gay. I stopped in McDonald's and got a 1/4 pounder w cheese, I said "make sure it's hot" - but it wasn't hot so I returned it. In the meantime, I dropped half of my fries on the floor. When she brought me the hot burger I asked for more fries as they had grown cold (the ones that hadn't fallen on the floor). She made a huge fuss about this, ranting at me with her mask on and thru the plexiglass with her foreign accent, I couldn't understand a word she was saying. Anyway, she replaced them in the end. Brought it all home. Absolutely delicious.

We had steak and chips (fries) for lunch = it wasn't good, not sure if it was my cooking or if they were bad steaks. For pud we had treacle tart with double CREAM. Two things I never have, so it was such a treat! I'd bought the cream for a soup recipe, that's why I had it in the house and I couldn't be fagged making custard.

They were very nice stylish good quality napkins I bought over the years from a German kitchen shop called Butler's. Butler's have abandoned Britain now, so I can't replace them.
I STILL have no idea where I put them.
I wonder if they'll ever appear again. Various things have vanished from my kitchen over the years. I lost about 6 potato peelers - literally. Hardly something I'd find "under the bed" or in a jacket pocket, are they?

London.
I have a lot of trouble finding duvet covers I like. That are comfortable. No man-made fibres, not too high thread count...on and on it goes. So I bought a great expense a repeat of the one I've got from fancy pantsy Cologne & Cotton (or rather fake fancy pantsy) and...they've reduced the quality. Scratchy. Nasty. Cheap feeling. £70 for that thank you very much.
Then last week, I saw a duvet cover at Sainsbury's supermarket in Hayes. It was more a sort of flannel I think. Brushed cotton? Not expensive. So I took the plunge and...it's perfect. Warm and soft and cosy. So I thought, go back and get another. Unfortunately, there weren't any there, they'd been replaced by "Christmas duvets covers" - some had bunnies on them or foxes.... scenes of winter. There's no way I'm buying them. Why on earth do we need Christmas duvet covers?

I find duvet cover wrestling too whelming as well. I buy cheap comforters at Target. They are reversible and come in many colors, so you can vary your bed's color scheme at will. With a top sheet, they're the perfect weight for summer and the perfect weight for winter when a blanket is added. I like to have a lot of covers on the bed. It's cozy.

It's Saturday. I don't do anything on Saturdays but monitor DL all day long while eating leftovers. I will live in my bathrobe. Tomorrow, when I wash it, I'll re-live all today's meals by their stains.

Re: queen size duvet cover for king size duvet. You have no idea how much more fluffy and cosy this is. I also have a queen size bed tho. Would look silly on king bed. I dislike how flat and reform school looking a queen duvet is in queen cover.
by Anonymous | reply 514 | November 14, 2020 5:07 PM |
Lesson in duvet cover changing: I follow the Martha Stewart method learned yrs ago from her tv program. Turn cover inside out. Match and hold 2 corners with the duvet and pull cover over duvet until you can hold and shake it in. Ensure you match corners and edges as you go along. Takes 2 mins with one person. Fabulous! And ensure you button or zip cover side or else small beasts snuggle in between there and get surprised when you come to bed and panic!!

Winter Wonderland, Baby It's Cold Outside, Frosty the Snowman and more ARE NOT Christmas Songs, they're Winter songs.
Oh, Holy Night, Silent Night, White Christmas, I'll be Home For Christmas are Christmas songs.
by Anonymous | reply 517 | November 14, 2020 9:17 PM |
Also Sleigh Ride, R517. That is, it's a winter Song. And Jingle Bells, too - maybe the original winter song.
But now you've got me thinking about Christmas, which is a bit whelming this year. More than a bit, actually.

This disappeared from my thread watcher - lucky I got a few WWs (thank you) to remind me of you all. The guy who thinks I'm too "cutesy" will be thrilled to see me back, that's for sure.
I wish someone hadn't mentioned bathrobes. Along with duvet covers that's an even bigger problem for me and one I haven't conquered. Yet again, they have to be 100% cotton. But they seem to make them too big and heavy these days, so I sweat like a pig in them. I had a perfect one but it's so old and disgusting, I even dyed it because the colour had washed out and it looked so sordid - but it's full of holes. I've bought so many replacements but they're all failures. Funnily enough France is a great place to buy them, but I haven't been back for about ten years.

R564, here. I did go for a walk Monday and went for another one yesterday. If I can't get out in the afternoon, I go out around 4 or 4:15 pm. I live on a circular road so there's no traffic. It's also quiet and very beautiful. It was really cold yesterday though.
R570, I was thinking about mittens yesterday on my walk. I'd make them myself but I have my cat who would eat the yarn and/or play with it as I'm knitting!
by Anonymous | reply 579 | November 18, 2020 2:07 PM |
R579 Cosmo, I agree about cats and yarn. I have two solutions when I knit: #1) I wait until Pete is napping, which luckily is most of the day and #2) I make a small yarn ball to keep him amused while I knit. Pete is actually more stimulated by the click and movement of the knitting needles than the yarn!

I found a Scholastic Book Services novel from the 1970s I always wanted to order. The teenage girl’s mother is an alcoholic but I predict she’ll get sober at the end. I see now it was published in conjunction with Alateen.
I can’t force myself past the second chapter.

R583, I loved Scholastic Books! I couldn't wait until the Book Mobile was at our school. We were probably lower middle class in the 70s and didn't have a lot of money to spend on things like this but I was always able to buy at least 1 book each time. Luckily, my Mom was an avid reader so she encouraged my love of books.
In fact, she got me started reading really thick books (think The Outlander books in hard cover). To this day, I love to read. Just wish I had more time to do it.

[quote]R584 We were probably lower middle class in the 70s and didn't have a lot of money to spend on things like this but I was always able to buy at least 1 book each time.
I could usually order 2 books, if my mom could get it together enough to write the check... and I could get it together enough to remember when it was due.
I was jealous of the kids who could afford to order 10 books.
SPOILER ALERT, This one’s plot was whelming: [italic] Halloween. Maureen Swanson is the scourge of the neighborhood. At age nine, she already has a reputation as a hard slapper, a loud laugher, a liar, and a stay-after-schooler. The other kids call her Stinky. So sometimes when Maureen passes the crumbling (and haunted?) Messerman mansion, she imagines that she is Maureen Messerman–rich, privileged, and powerful. Then she finds a way into the forbidden, boarded-up house. In the hall are portraits of seven young women wearing elaborate gowns and haughty expressions. Maureen has something scathing to say to each one, but then she notices that the figures seem to have shifted in their frames. So she reaches out her finger to touch the paint–just to make sure–and touches . . . silk! These seven daughters of privilege are colder and meaner than Maureen ever thought to be. They are wicked, wicked ladies, and Maureen has something they want.
