This is a mostly construct of American society and American culture, the need to "fit" into a certain social subset. In other countries, young people don't though as much emotional turmoil because they don't have a group of friends that looks exactly like them and likes all the same things as they do.

Those issues just bleed over into sexuality later in life, especially for gays.
