such a bizarre season. Interesting to see how players are adapting.

At least four players (Istomin, Zapata, Kristin and Escobedo) have already tested positive for Covid at Roland Garros.

Shapo is not hot.
He looks like Ekaterina Makarova.

Escobedo had Covid earlier in the year so has actually been denied permission to play rather than he has tested positive at RG.

Why hasn't Djokovic been denied permission to play?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 20, 2020 4:24 PM |
R10 really?
Then Dmitrov, Novaxx and Paire need to be withdrawn.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 20, 2020 4:29 PM |
R11 I think Escobedo's coach tested positive.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 20, 2020 4:30 PM |
It's just swirling rumours at the moment but when similar rumours went round at the USO they turned out to be true.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 20, 2020 4:32 PM |
As far as I know nobody tested positive at Rome. Yet the French is already a mess.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 20, 2020 4:38 PM |
[quote] I think Escobedo's coach tested positive.
If Escobedo tested positive "earlier in the year" and was dismmised, by that logic, Djokovic himself should be dismissed because he tested positive earlier in the year and spread it by holding a tournament. Escobedo's coach can be sent packing to prevent spreading.

Players not pleased with conditions so far at #RG20 . Quoting an unnamed, but a high-profile player: “We can’t believe this is a tournament, let alone a Grand Slam. Communication is slow, lot of waiting. The maids at hotels are not wearing masks, tables are not cleaned regularly”.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 20, 2020 5:03 PM |
OK it was Dzumhur's coach who tested positive that's meant Dzumhur can't play. Apparently the coach says he'd had Covid before so reckons it must be a false positive.
Apologies for the confusion all.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 20, 2020 5:11 PM |
The published rumors, such as they exist, are that Escobedo currently tested positive.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 20, 2020 5:14 PM |
Shapo team or Dwarf/Lil’ Diego team?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 20, 2020 5:23 PM |
Escobedo is not on the qualification draw.
There are two players born in 2003 on the qualification draw, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard who received a wc and Carlos Alcaraz who is currently the number 186 of the ranking. I think it's the first GS with players born in 2003
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 20, 2020 5:27 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 20, 2020 8:33 PM |
Li’l Diego wins. Third set tie break. Tomorrow, djoko will probably beat him 6-2, 6-2
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 20, 2020 8:34 PM |
Definitely a lot of space between Shapavalov's ears, tho...
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 20, 2020 8:36 PM |
And with that win Diego enters the top 10 for the first time in his career, denying Shapovalov the same feat.

by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 20, 2020 9:24 PM |
Schwartzman matches always result in multiple breaks of serve. Yesterday with Nadal it was 5 in a row in the second set. Today against Shapovalov, there were 12 breaks! 6 for each player and 3 for each in just the third set.
Djokovic has really improved his second serve over the last 10 years but Schwartzman is 1 of the best returners so that will be an interesting stat to follow tomorrow
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 20, 2020 10:33 PM |

[quote]Yay lil Diego...I don't think he is even 5'7"
I'm 5'7" (yes, I'm a shorty), and when I stand at the same point of the net that Diego was standing at yesterday, the net is considerably lower on me than it is on him. I doubt that he's any more than about 5'5" and a bit. Which makes his achievements in this world of towering tennis giants all the more remarkable.

by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 21, 2020 6:01 PM |
R52 Seriously? In my oppinion he is not even remotely attractive, at least not compared with other players of the circuit
R55 No, Shapo is simply not good enough on clay to hurt Nole. On other surfaces he would have chances but not on clay. And he show in the semifinals against a very tired opponent that he can't play the important points. He needs to learn to play that points or the lower part of top 10 is the further he'll go
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 21, 2020 6:14 PM |
It was a bad day for young players. Both Alcaraz and Mpetshi Perricard were very close to win their matches becoming the first 2003 to win on a GS but both ended losing.
With the exception of Korda and Altmaier all young players lost today (maybe i'm missing a youngster between the winners)
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 21, 2020 6:19 PM |
God, no, R164. All of those you have listed are much more repugnant, Connors especially. Novak has personality and can be charming, but he is usually trying too hard and, of course, has crazy health ideas.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | September 21, 2020 6:26 PM |
But Connors was loved. He was a jerk and was loved while Lendl was polite and he was hated.
Novak is the most interesting of the big 3, at least he has a personality
by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 21, 2020 6:30 PM |
Lendl was morose and lacked personality. I liked Connors back in the day but I didn't realize he was such a putz. Plus he was Merican. So we had a national cheerleading squad behind him.
Novak was fine when he was starting out, he had a sense of humor but man did he take a turn. And his desire to be loved is repulsive.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 21, 2020 7:08 PM |

[quote]Is Djokovic the most disliked # 1 pro tennis player ever? Nastase/Connors/McEnroe/Rios/Court looking to relinquish the title
Interesting, r64, I'm old enough to remember them all, and they were all treated somewhat differently by the public. Nastase, for example, was someone the crowd actively *enjoyed* hating. That's what kept them in thrall—what appalling thing was he going to do next that would cause everyone to clutch their pearls? Connors was a brat, but loved by most Americans and even the Wimbledon crowd for his "spunk" and never-give-up attitude. McEnroe was far too obviously talented to really, really be hated. People conceded he could fly off the handle, but that attacking serve-and-volley game was thrilling and spectacular and divinely gifted.
Court was another player with a very problematic rapport with the public. Most people barely conceded she was one of the greatest, mainly because her tennis was laboured, based on power and overwhelming the opponent with brute force. I was just a kid in Australia when BJK started her tour, and Court was maybe-yes-maybe-no about the whole thing, always siding with the PTB simply because they were the PTB. Even as a kid, I could just feel that she wouldn't have approved of a little sissy wog like me, and the applause she got was always just tepidly polite. She was never loved, not even by die-hard Australian tennis fans.
Djokovic is perhaps the most broadly disliked number one so far, ever. If you exclude his rabid nationalistic Serb fans, people just can't warm to him. And the less they warm to him, the more desperately he wants to ratchet up those records so that, as r70 says, he just *has* to be adulated and can no longer just be considered second-rate to people like Federer and Nadal (I'm convinced he literally loathes them because he is so envious of their rapturous fans).
It's Djokovic, hands down.

R122, I've never doubted the integrity of the draw of the last 32 but I absolutely feel that all the Grand Slams screw with the early rounds. I've always said that the draw favors the tournament. How many times did Roger or Rafa get 3 qualifiers in their cakewalk to the semis, while Djokovic draws Kohlschreiber?
I'm shocked that Thiem isn't in Novak's half. This time Novak got the Roger draw and Dominick got the 3rd card usually reserved for Novak.
I predict an early Nadal exit. There is no way he is going to deal with all the changes, freakazoid that he is. He doesn't want hotel staff and the entire ATP tour to see him having breakfast with his "trainer" while his sister has breakfast in bed with his wife.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | September 25, 2020 5:09 PM |
Rafa is already complainning about the balls.
Anyway, i don't think Rafa is in danger in the first rounds, he has an easy draw, at least at the beginning and he is the king of clay for something

Ruud defeated Humbert in three sets.
Ruud is the nextgen who is doing better on clay, but he is going to be tired on Roland Garros.
Humbert improved a lot on clay. I read an article about him today and he is described as sweet and he said that he plays piano to relax (i suppose the french federation needed someone sweet to compensate Moutet who is cray cray)

by Anonymous | reply 154 | September 26, 2020 4:07 PM |
Musetti proves he's the real deal and wins a challenger today. The big boys are lucky as hell he's not in the RG draw
by Anonymous | reply 155 | September 26, 2020 5:25 PM |
R155 Oh come on, the guy is going to be big but he lost a bunch of weeks ago with Carlos Alcaraz and Carlos failed at past the qualifications (he wasted two match points)
by Anonymous | reply 156 | September 26, 2020 6:48 PM |
R156 but he suddenly has momentum now. In tennis sometimes just 1 match can propel a player forward. He's been in great form starting with the Wawrinka win
by Anonymous | reply 157 | September 26, 2020 7:33 PM |
R157 Let's be serious, he won a challenger, it's his first one, he is playing well and he is doing well, but that's all for now.
And Alcaraz won a challenger too before Roland Garros and at the moment of truth he played badly.
They are very young, they will be top players if everything goes well, but they are not remotely ready to give a scare to a top player at a GS.
In fact they did a lot putting themselves on top 200 on this weird year.
I think there's a clear risk of Musetti being overhyped like Dimitrov was because his game is beautiful
by Anonymous | reply 158 | September 26, 2020 7:36 PM |
R158 the way he's playing now he definitely could have upset some seeds at RG. Not a Nadal or Djokovic but surely some top 30 guys
by Anonymous | reply 159 | September 26, 2020 7:54 PM |
lmfao Nadal already complaining about the change of balls compared to last year.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | September 27, 2020 2:04 AM |
R160, the Wilson balls they are using this year are meant to stand up to long rallies and are heavier than the balls the tournament had been using. This works against players who use a lot of topspin, like Nadal and Thiem. (Thiem has also complained).
by Anonymous | reply 161 | September 27, 2020 2:50 AM |
Nadal is such a whiny little prisspot. R128 here they are at a Shakira concert, just a bunch of straight guys at a Shakira concert. The wife was busy at her job at the bank, which she totally loves, that's why she doesn't' tour with him. Also he's so focused she doesn't want to distract him. That's why they go weeks without even speaking.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | September 27, 2020 9:09 AM |
Azarenka leaves the court, saying it's too cold to play.

R162 To be honest, they are married know, but what they did when they were dating it's more normal that the ones who are following their boyfriend when they are dating for a month.
Anyway, that's the difference between having a good image or not. Nadal basically did the same Cristiano Ronaldo did for years, he went to holidays with a lot of male friends without the girlfriend, but that plagued Cristiano with gay rumours while there was nothing in the press about Rafa
by Anonymous | reply 167 | September 27, 2020 10:20 AM |
R166 I think Sinner is a nightmare on first round. He is not regular enough to get further on the draw but he is able to give trouble to almost anyone right now. He was on the verge of defeating Khachanov at the US Open (and without the physical problems he should have won) and his game is powerful enough to give Goffin a lot of trouble

Sinner was on the verge of defeat easily Khachanov on the US Open, then he had physical problems and lost. He is irregular but on a good day he is trouble for his rival.

I don't understand why Azarenka is so cranky about the weather. Sometimes in April, even early May it can be cold in Europe.
I do think it's time for Venus to retire. It's bizarre to me that she has now lost to Schmiedlova multiple times. That girl is so ordinary. Even Azarenka at her worst would probably beat her. Venus got a win over less-than-great-form Azarenka this past summer yet still struggles against Schmiedlova.
Coric what a disaster. His winner:unforced error ratio was atrocious today. Gombos is 30 and got only his second main draw slam match win!

Kasatkina/Kontaveit out of doubles. Rumour says it's Covid related.
Possibly also Kuznetsova/Bertens but can't confirm.

R277, she makes it soooo hard to root for her.

6 hours and 5 minutes for Giustino-Moutet

Yes, R266, it's been very disappointing with Petkovic, Venus, FAA, Hurkacz, Monfils, Coric, Mmoh, Hoang, Tiafoe, Murray, Machac and De Minaur out already before the first round has even ended.

R277 I can't fucking stand these religious people.

[quote]And he's 6'6
Fucsovics is 1m88 so that's 6'2"...still quite tall

Is it true that Fuscovics has nudes leaked online? I've read that a few times on LPSG.

Ah...my bad. I thought the commentator said 6'6. Maybe he was talking about Medvedev.

I’ve been a fan of Fucsovics since his match against Stan at Indian Wells. He is enjoyable to watch.

Felix is precocious, but he is nowhere near Nadal or Djokovic at his age, and i don't watch in him the hunger those two had at that age either. He has talent and he has a stronger body (i remember Davidovich saying that most of them look like child in comparission with Felix when they were juniors even most of them were older) but its needed way more to get what the atp is promoting with him.
Right now i think Sinner looks more promising than Felix

Medvedev out.

[quote] It's not his best surface, but he was semifinalist four times and one time finalist. That's way better than most clay specialist resume
Who are clay specialist?

Marton has such a weird tattoo. I had to go out to Instagram before to see it. It looks like a black wristband and then that the ink splattered on his forearm while he was wearing a glove. He often wears an actual wristband during his matches and you can't see it, but it's a unique but odd choice.

Oh, here's a much better picture of it. And not too bad of his face and guns as well!

Probably, I think Daniil is 6ft6. Pretty crazy he has never won a match at RG
by Anonymous | reply 297 | September 28, 2020 9:47 PM |
It's very odd Medvedev's never won at RG considering he trained in France on clay and lives there.

R291, Sinner is only a year younger than FAA. Outside of the NextGen finals, Sinner so far hasn't accomplished much, certainly in comparison to Nadal or even Felix at 19.

Fucsovics has BIG dick energy.
Felix's bodacious bod may be mature, but his mind is not. That's okay, everybody in their own time. I fear that he's fallen down the girlfriend rabbit-hole though. He needs to switch to the find'em, fuck'em, forget'em mode because his careeer is more important right now.
