Made-for-TV movies you still remember

I clearly recall watching “Murder: By Reason of Insanity” in the 80s, which was based on a real story. Candice Bergen played Ewa Berwid, married to a psychotic control freak who gamed the mental health system and escaped prison to kill her. Chilling stuff.

What TV movies from back in the day still stick in your head?

Helter Skelter with someone whose name I no longer remember.

A movie about Jonestown with Powers Boothe

Go Ask Alice, a teenage drug drama

Dawn, Portrait of a Teenage Runaway with one of the Brady Girls and some hot guy.

The Dark Secret of Harvest Home with Bette Davis

Salem's Lot, based on a Stephen King novel

A Howling in the Woods, with Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman

Bad Ronald

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, with Kim Darby

by Anonymousreply 18September 9, 2020 6:16 AM

There was one that was so weird that I could barely believe it was real and not something I just dreamed:

Who is Julia?, with Mare Winningham as a brain-dead plain-Jane housewife who has the brain of a beautiful woman transplanted into her skull.

She actually got great reviews for it (of course she did--she's one of the best US character actors alive).

While an unfaithful criminal lawyer considers killing his wife, his spouse develops some schemes of her own.

Very enjoyable. Light but good plot, nice interior and exterior shots good costuming. Takes place in San Francisco

Starring: Anthony Hopkins

Blythe Danner (this was before her daughter became everything we hate, so it's safe to view)

and....the best part...drumroll...

Swoosie Kurtz !!!

Caveat: Unless someone on YouTube found a print and polished it. Or you happen to catch it on TV, the DVD in circulation now is literally unwatchable. Too bad, because this has some fun, campy elements with a rather solid plot.

I had many of R15's picks on my list, and "Bad Ronald" from R18's list, plus:

"Friendly Fire" with Carol Burnett being serious.

"The Girl Most Likely To..." with Stockard Channing (written by Joan Rivers)

"Playing for Time" with Vanessa Redgrave and Jane Alexander

...and, speaking of Jane Alexander, "Testament" (made for PBS's American Playhouse) is indelibly stamped.

I also loved Bad Ronald.

Sarah T portrait of a teenage alcoholic (Linda Blair movie)

by Anonymousreply 27September 9, 2020 7:08 AM

Fan of Bad Ronald, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Trilogy of Terror and Satan’s School for Girls.

We’re the films Somebody’s Watching Me, Tarantulas The Deadly Cargo, Ants! And Terror Out of the Sky made for TV also? I seem to recall the fades to black for commercials. But it’s been a couple of decades since I’ve watched them.

My absolute favorite MFTV was Dark Night of the Scarecrow starring Charles Durning. So creepy.

"Games Your Mother Never Taught You". This is one I remembered the title of, but didn't watch in 1982 so watched it on youtube.

A secretary navigates her way up the corporate ladder in resurgent early '80s NYC.

This was in some ways the forerunner to corporate-themed movies like Working Girl, Wall Street, and The Secret of My Success, but it's not elaborate like those. It's actually a fairly straightforward look at a woman working in middle management. The book the movie is based on is a 1977 management guide with the same title. Despite the fact that not a whole lot happens Loretta Switt is engaging and was extremely winning in the lead role.

Dead of Night

The first two stories are okay. The first is about a car from the 1920s that sends a man back in time, the 2nd is about a woman who appears to be attacked by a vampire every night placing the village in fear, but the 3rd story is really the best by far. Joan Hackett plays a grieving mother who performs a ritual to bring her son back from the dead after he dies by drowning. Pet Sematary owes a lot to this story, which was remade in another made-for-TV movie, Trilogy of Terror II. But, as is usually the case, the original is much better.

Speaking of mini-series, I always loved the political drama 'Favorite Son' starring Harry Hamlin and Linda Kozlowski. It's really well made and Kozlowski is brilliant in it. It was written by Steve Sohmer.

Incidentally, it was fairly racy for tv with some extreme violence and sexual scenes involving bondage. When they cut it to theatrical length for overseas markets it was rated R, even though no new R rated material was added. It just seemed more potent with the time cut and all the racy stuff closer together.

They take the country route because police are checking for snow chains and he doesn’t have them in his VW bug. They and the small dog survive the crashed caused by her inexplicably grabbing the wheel, but then have a harrowing time fighting for survival. You can watch it in full on YouTube.

The Great American Beauty Pageant. The movie throws in every cliche storyline and still manages to be engrossing. Farrah Fawcett pre CA is in it as is Brett Somers, unfortunately not as a contestant. Joanna Cameron plays the ringer contestant who tries to win so she can sabotage the contest and there's even a subplot about how Louis Jordan tries to coerce a contestant to sleep with him so she will win. Eleanor Parker is the former winner who is now den mother. Tracy Reed, the beautiful black ingenue is in it and Parker gives her a rather startling speech noting that her presence will make other kids of color have dreams they wouldn't have if they hadn't seen her.

"Crowhaven Farm, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and Trilogy of Terror were the best horror ones!"

How could you forget "The Night Stalker?" Written by Richard Matheson, directed by Dan Curtis and starring Darren McGavin, it was the tale of a vampire in latter day Las Vegas. The only one who really knows the situation for what it is is a down and out reporter named Carl Kolchak (McGavin) and he takes the situation in his own hands, hoping to get the story of a lifetime out of it. It was filmed almost like a documentary; it was so well made that you could actually believe the tale was real. It was so well acted and SO scary. And at the time it aired it became the highest rated original TV movie on US television, earning a 33.2 rating and 48 share, beating the previous record by "Brian's Song." It was such a success there was a sequel called "The Night Strangler." That did well, and so a series was made out of it, but ultimately failed. It featured Kolchak going up against a new monster every week and that was just plain silly. But the original movie "The Night Stalker" was truly a great achievement, and scary as hell.

I got this list from Wikipedia:

Amy Fisher: My Story, 1992 (TV) Noelle Parker starred as Fisher.

Casualties of Love: The "Long Island Lolita" Story, 1993 (TV) Alyssa Milano starred as Fisher.

The Amy Fisher Story, 1993 (TV) Drew Barrymore starred as Fisher.

I think this movie was called "The Runner". It featured Michael Landon as a grown adult who was a bedwetter, racing home after school to haul in the piss stained sheets his mom would hang out his bedroom window to humiliate him. All the rushing home in shame made him a good runner!

I think this was a tv movie: "Breezy" starring DL fave Kay Lenz as a groovy free and easy hippie chick who inexplicably falls for William Holden as the geezer in an open at the collar shirt who picks up Kay hitchhiking and falls for her too! Of course, Kay has to be going and leave Bill a broken geezer.

"The Homecoming"--first Walton family Christmas movie.

"A Girl Called Sooner" Cloris Leachman as an old biddy in the woods with a still.

"Sunshine" Hippie cancer gal and her shearling wearing husband have a baby and the hippie chick mother dies. Husband says, "She smells lie death," when he goes to fuck Meg Foster. Hippie chick is ok with him getting some, then she dies. John Denver songs.

"The Victim" 1972 TV move with Elizabeth Montgomery and Eileen Heckart.

A wealthy woman is trapped during a storm in a house with no electricity or phone. She knows her sister is missing - she struggles to against a dour housekeeper and her sister's estranged husband to discover the truth.

I still remember the chills this movie gave me after all these years. Elizabeth Montgomery and Eileen Heckart's combined talents raised this movie far beyond the usual TV movie fare.

Elizabeth Montgomery and her then-husband William Asher were known in Hollywood for helping to "make" the ABC network, giving the network their first top 10 series, and most successful series up to that time, with "Bewitched"

The end of Montgomery's marriage to Asher coincided with the end of the "Bewitched" series in 1972. And Montgomery went on to negotiate her own pioneering TV movie production deal - that gave her control over scripts, casting, and other production decisions - that few women in TV had at that time.

For me "The Victim" stands out as one of Montgomery's best but often overlooked TV movies.

Death of A Cheerleader is a undoubted classic of the genre... A lot of the crime ones stick in my mind. Especially being from the UK, lots of the cases were new to me and I didn’t know the details before I watched in grim fascination. Blind Faith mentioned upthread, Fatal Vision, Betty Broderick films also already mentioned, Small Sacrifices with Farrah Fawcett as that absolutely evil murderous cunt of a mother Diane Downs.

“I Know My Name is Steven” also named above is something I saw when I was still a kid myself, and the details haunt me. I also had nightmares about one about Ted Bundy, which Google tells me must have been A Deliberate Stranger with Mark Harmon.

Ever since getting a DVD burner, I've gone crazy burning films, variety shows, soaps and other specials from You Tube, and with the pandemic, it has been a great time passer to have these when I can't go out. I eventually started filing all my TV movies together, and noticed that a lot of TV movies ended up becoming pilots for shows that lasted maybe 1-2 seasons or never got picked up at all.

Two Susan Hayward movies from 1972 I watched recently: "Say Goodbye Maggie Cole" as a doctor, and "Heat of Anger" where she played an attorney. Both seemed to be pilots. I believe that "Heat of Anger" was originally meant for Stanwyck, but she was ill, and Barbara encouraged Susan to take on the role.

My favorite Christmas movie is the TV Movie "The Gathering" from 1977 with Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton. Ed is estranged from his wife and children. Finds out he's dying and tries to make amends at a Christmas family reunion. I actually got to recreate the ending in real life. Gregory Harrison plays the youngest son who went to Canada to dodge the draft. Ed realizes at the end he will never see his son again but then he shows up and they are reunited. Few years ago I was at an autograph show. Ed Asner was there and I had him sign the DVD of this movie. On the other side of the room was Harrison. I had him sign it to. He asked when I had gotten Ed to sign. I said he's here. Gregory got really excited and asked where. So I took him over to Ed's table. An reunited them. They gave each other a big hug like in the movie. Surreal.

I don't think anybody has mentioned another Maureen Stapleton TV movie, "Queen of the Stardust Ballroom", which of course was quickly musicalized for Broadway as "Ballroom".

Watching the dog attack in Where Have All the People Gone, triggered another memory of one, which turned out to be Trapped from 1973. James Brolin, Mr. Barbra Streisand, gets mugged in a department store bathroom, (a sex hookup gone wrong maybe?) knocked unconscious and locked in for the night.

The problem is there are six deadly attack security Dobermans trained to kill that he must evade and stay alive from until the store opens in the morning. I was eight when I saw it and I remember that I used to get antsy at closing time in stores that we might get trapped there like that.

I wonder if he has PTSD when Barbra closes the underground mall at night and releases the dogs down there?

"Escape from Bogen County": The gorgeous Jaclyn Smith!!! She tries to escape from her abusive husband who runs the county. Made me afraid to ever go to Texas.

"Sweet Hostage": Martin Sheen is a mental patient who takes Linda Blair hostage. I didn't understand why Martin Sheen made me feel all funny when he was the bad guy. This one tops my list as a really fucking disturbing movie.

R327 As I had never heard of that movie, I looked it up.

" Soon, Anna meets and falls in love with Leo (Neeson), an Irish sculptor who helps her to find true passion and fulfillment. He is a nice guy, and has a stable relationship with Anna. Molly is soon exposed to their sexual relationship. One day, Molly sees Leo naked in the bathroom. She points at his private part and asks what it is. He tells her and she asks if she can touch it. He says okay and she puts her little hand on it for a second."

WTF?

R15 mentioned the Burning Bed. It think that's probably the most well-known made-for-TV movie.

Sins of the Past - Barbara Carrera, Kim Cattrall, Kirstie Alley and Debby Boone play call girls who work for the same service. One girl is murdered and they disband/retire in fear. Several years later, another girl is murdered and they realize a serial killer is stalking them. This was actually pretty good, as I recall.

I’ve struggled, unsuccessfully, to remember the title of this 1970s made-for-TV movie. You’re my only hope, DL.

The set-up: a young man and his girlfriend are out in a secluded spot in the woods when . . . something happens. The young man regains consciousness and discovers that his girlfriend has been shot to death. He has no memory of what happened. The girlfriend’s wealthy, vindictive father makes sure that the young man is charged with her murder, and fights to keep him in prison as the young man’s attorney battles to stop him from being executed.

At one point, the lawyer tells the young man that he has always assumed that he was guilty. And are we sure he’s not?

Somehow, some way, in true TV-movie fashion, the young man’s memory comes back. The denouement is honestly scary. The young couple were confronted at gunpoint by the girl’s father. They both assumed that he’s going to kill the young man, but no. The father advances on his daughter, and, as she screams in terror, he shoots her. He’s killed the daughter he idolized, because—and this is implied, not spelled out—he was incestuously obsessed with her, and couldn’t cope with her falling in love with someone else.

Does anyone else remember this? What is the goddam title?

R299, American TV movies were sometimes in the past shown in primetime TV slots in the U.K., for example one of the Amy Fisher movies was BBC’s big Saturday night movie one week in the 90s (although people did complain about this because of the low “quality” of such films.. Not me, of course!) Similarly the Steven Stayner film (in two parts I think?) was shown over Saturday and Sunday nights in primetime, again on BBC. In the 1980s and early 90s and before satellite TV really took off we had a grand total of four channels (two being the BBC!!) but you could usually find this stuff on BBC 1 and occasionally on ITV.

And, as you note, they were often renamed here. British audiences don’t like titles for example that are or include wording like “The Lacey McBoogle Story” (say); these will only ever sound like Troy McClure movies to us. Also with the crimes being unfamiliar here, the name would often mean nothing to us. The Amy Fisher film I mentioned was “Amy Fisher: My Story” and aired as “Lethal Lolita” on BBC (bit unfair, Mary Jo lived! Not lethal then!)

In later years the BBC and ITV moved these types of films to late -night timeslots, often midnight or so. Not that it stopped me of course.

Modern TV movies now only tend to air on trashier channels. Channel 5 here likes to show those terrible Hallmark Mysteries and the awful modern Lifetime stuff in the mid-afternoon on weekdays.

Though technically not made for TV, but most likely how many of us at a certain age remember it, is the animated short The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde from the early 1970s. It was nominated for an animation short Oscar. In the comments the Brits recall it at Christmas, but I don’t think that’s when it was shown in the US. I think it had a profound effect on my empathy for others, but then again I was already an overly sensitive child. That it’s based on an Oscar Wilde story shows I must have had gay sensibilities even at an early age.

The Dollmaker with Jane Fonda, mentioned upthread, is worth watching. Her husband is played by Levon Helm, and Dan Hedaya plays a supporting role. This is really a miniseries, but “Evergreen,” based on the book by Belva Plain. Lesley Ann Warren played the main character, a Polish immigrant to New York who married one man and had a lifelong affair with another.

The Longest Night from 1972. Rich teen girl is kidnapped and buried in a large box with only a supply of water, a fan that brought air through a tube through the ground, and w lightbulb. The fan and lightbulb shared a battery so if she used the light too much it could reduce the amount of time she could draw down fresh air. Somehow my parents let me watch this as a six year old. Being kidnapped became a huge childhood fear of mine.

1973's "Coffee, Tea or Me?", starring the always delightful Karen Valentine as a lovable stewardess/bigamist, Louise Lasser as the kooky-yet-sensible best friend, and John Davidson and Michael Anderson, Jr. as the two clueless cucks.

Here in its entirety for your viewing pleasure.

"Mr. and Mrs. Bo Jo Jones" with Desi Arnaz Jr. and Miss Christopher Norris.

Isn't this the movie, R544, where Lucy got worried that Christopher Norris was going to entrap Desi Jr into a relationship so she threw a hot cup of coffee on her?

Speaking of Lucy being over-protective of Desi Jr

I loved the movie "You'll Like My Mother" where Patti Duke travels to her husband's home after her husband's death (maybe in Vietnam)

And finds her mother-in-law is nothing like her husband described her

This movie was filmed in the Congdon Mansion, in which heiress Elisabeth Congdon IIRC and her nurse were murdered, years after the movie was filmed there

"Death of a Centerfold: The Dorothy Stratten Story". Not a bad movie, but Jamie Lee Curtis was so not-Playmate material that it was a distraction.

And is it just me, or did they use Jamie's mom Janet Leigh's face for the TV Guide ad?

Haywire (1980) with Deborah Raffin, Lee Remick, Jason Robards and a young Hart Bochner. Based on Brooke Hayward's memoir about growing up the daughter of actress Margaret Sullavan and producer Leland Hayward and how their seemingly idyllic life fell apart. Did I mention a young Hart Bochner?

Does anyone remember this mid 80’s movie called Generation? It takes place in the future- 1999- and a guy (Richard Beymer) invents some hockey equipment that’s going to change the game forever. His brother, Drake Hogestyn From DOOL!, is a hockey player and he is worried about the injuries it’s going to cause, etc. etc.

I remember thinking 1999 was going to be awesome and futuristic because of this movie, but it wasn’t. Massive disappointment.

R561 That does look like Janet Leigh. Bruce Weitz was miscast. He was ugly and sleazy, no way Dorothy would fall for him. The real guy was sleazy but sexy like Eric Roberts in Star 80.

As a side are, I would just like to say Jennifer O’Neill is probably, all around, the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

Unfortunately she’s a lukewarm actress and Born Again Christian. And batshit crazy (married nine times.) But other than all that - lovely.

"All the Kind Strangers"; a family of off-the-grid hillbilly orphans kidnap Stacy Keach and Samantha Eggar and force them to be their "parents" -- or else disappear in the nearby swamp.

Featuring John Savage and Robbie Benson as the two eldest orphans, and a young boy that I for years thought was Jodie Foster.

Chiller- directed by Wes Craven and starring Michael Beck, Paul Sorvino and Beatrice Straight. Beck plays Straight's son, and for some reason I can't remember he dies and she has him frozen in hopes they can bring him back to life in the future. Something happens to his tank, Miles thaws out, they bring him back to life, but he comes back a soulless monster.

Bay Cove- Tim Matheson and Pamela Sue Martin move to an island where everyone, including Barbara Billingsley, is a devil worshiper. Woody Harrelson plays their friend who dies by flying off a cliff in his jeep.
