it's a shame Osaka strained her leg and couldn't play
Djokovic looks like crap today and clearly isn't 100%
Raonic may just get that first win over him

If he wins he'll have enough ranking to play RG qualifications

lmfao men's tennis continues to be a JOKE!!!
even less than 100% Djokovic still wins a Masters title.
Even with his booming serve Raonic couldn't keep it together. He was spraying groundstrokes left and right because of Djokovic's defense

Roanic is fug. Some of you must really be old and hard up.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 29, 2020 8:40 PM |
R8 Well he had a little help in the semis, because closing the roof when RBA was serving for staying in the second set was not exactly what i would call right. Of course Roberto should have won in the third, he even served for match, but that doesn't change the fact that they closed the roof without any reason at the worst moment

Benoit Paire has tested positive for Covid. So much for their bubble!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 30, 2020 12:12 PM |
So Djokovic is now officially Bolshy Djo, setting up a rabble of anti-ATP renegades. He’s got quite a few followers, but notably no Fed or Nadal, and, as Murray points out, no moves to include female players (yet?).
Let the civil war begin!

Tennis player withdraws from US Open after positive Covid-19 test
From CNN's Jabari Jackson
A player scheduled to play in this week’s US Open has tested positive for coronavirus and has been withdrawn from the tournament, United States Tennis Association (USTA) has announced.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the USTA revealed the player is asymptomatic and has “advised” the player to self-isolate for at least 10 days. In addition, the USTA has begun conducting contact tracing to determine if anyone else will need to “quarantine for 14 days.”
The statement did not identify the player by name.
The 2020 US Open is set to begin Aug. 31 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Is it Paire? Someone else?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 30, 2020 4:52 PM |
It's Paire. His coach and the French players he'd been hanging out with have been ordered to self-isolate.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 30, 2020 4:54 PM |
Actually his coach returned to France after Paire's retirement against Coric, in which Paire looked visibly ill.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 30, 2020 4:58 PM |
Djokovic, Pospisil and their followers are pieces of shit but that's not surprising
also not surprised airhead Paire is the one who tested positive
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 30, 2020 6:05 PM |
As I said before, let the civil war begin. On the one side level-headed argument and political pragmatism; on the other, greedy, self-centred maximalism couched in populist rhetoric. It sort of reflects the world we live in, reproducing the same dynamics.
Thanks for posting the ATP Player Council players’ letter, r23/r24. Where did you get hold of it?

by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 31, 2020 7:57 AM |
I'd automatically look askance at anything headed by Djokovic and Isner, though the objectives seem vague and poorly delineated. The current Wikipedia. tennis.com, and New York Times articles don't give much more information than the excerpts at R23/R24 and Twitter. The only objectives listed are "revenue sharing, disciplinary actions, player pensions, travel, insurance and amenities at tournaments".

by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 31, 2020 5:29 PM |
NO ONE is saying Raonic is handsome or good looking.. we lust after his legs and those calves... i hope "fashion" turns back the clock and ALL the men start wearing super short shorts like back in the day....
mcenroe with chris evert stating unequivocally that serena is the greatest of all time (because???) while evert stating that physically and mentally she might be, but that her accomplishments 23 slams or not still fall behind graf and martina which is true..
glad that everyone is NOT on the serena is the greatest train and stating that their opinion which is all that is is actually fact...
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 31, 2020 5:29 PM |
Raonic's legs and arse are mighty fine, but back when he was younger and he had that immaculate slicked down hair, he looked pretty hot. I know he's not classically good looking but he's not horrifically ugly.

R38... Raonic DID look better with his hair cut short and slicked back...and yes, not "classically good looking" but still sexy and not ugly... ugly is such a evil and strong word anyway...all i know what a vision seeing him nude and wet and those legs and calves and ass in the shower and i have no doubt he's packing too..
by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 31, 2020 5:35 PM |
I prefer Raonic in his current curly locks state.
Coric, looking good as ever after a shaky start, through in straight sets over Andujar.
Lajovic is the first men's seed upset, beaten in four sets by studly Gerasimov.

Tsitsipas is winning easily till now, Zverev is having a lot of trouble.
It seems Shapo will defeat Korda, but Nakashima is winning pretty easily. Nakashima is pretty underrated but he is doing very well, i think he is the second player born in 2001 with better ranking

R44... FOWLER is foul! he's a asshole and more importantly a moron who knows nothing about tennis! STILL! and yet ESPN continues their decades long habit of having their announcers and sportscasters commenting on EVERY SPORT, waiting for mike tirico or whatever his name is to show and spout data off pieces of paper as his "expertise commentating"...
p. mourataglou has always at least to me REEKED of "phony fraud" a " full of it svengali bs'er"... a opportunist worse then nick bolletieri was...
it has to be said about blake that he is handsome and "ethnic" hence his "expertise" in commentating tennis matches and being hired to do so...i mean what else are his qualifications to be a tennis expert/historian/commentator.. course i guess at least he was a top player as opposed to double specialist mattek-sands, who gets this kind of work for her wacky off the wall personality and clownish make-up...and even worse, jan michael gambilll for the tennis channel? and he's a commentator because and why and how again????
john and patrick mcenroe?! aaargh! enough said! john thinks his opinion is fact and knows it all and can't stop talking and patrick's ENTIRE LIFE and CAREER was and is based on who his brother is..same for mary carillo for that matter!..
isn't it about time to put ole "cliffy" drysdale out to pasture? and what about boring mary jo fernandez, she of the bias commentary because of her and her husband's connections to various players...

by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 31, 2020 9:13 PM |
When did Coco's serve get to be so fragile? Her toss is all over the place. And, serving from the deuce court, Sevastova just hit a second serve at least 15 feet to the right of the center line and 10 feet long of the service line of the ad court. I have never seen a pro tennis player miss a serve that badly, and I have watched A LOT of tennis matches.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | August 31, 2020 9:23 PM |
R56 Dementieva and to a lesser extent, Ivanovic, were both famously erratic servers and would often spray the ball like Sevastova just did.

Yes, R61. It's stupid. They aren't running a charity; they're running a tennis tournament and have the ability to get the call right every time and keep things moving. Do you have any idea how John McEnroe's career would have turned out differently with this?
Also, should there still be people running elevators and servicing at gas stations and being rest room attendants just because it would be a job for them?

R53 I say this as a Serena fan, from the moment she hired Mouratoglou I could not stand him. No one heard of his academy in France until she put him on the map. Yes, Dimitrov and Pavlyuchenkova had been training there but no one outside the tennis coaching bubble knew of him. Now suddenly he's used Serena's name to build a booming business, even sometimes having concerts at his site. He gets to rub elbows with celebrities thanks to Serena. I knew he was a famewhore and I wasn't surprised when he started doing commentary for espn. Is he a decent coach? sure but as everyone knows, he joined the team of 1 of the greatest players to ever live when she had already won numerous slams and other titles. I guess Serena is OK with the arrangement but typically coaches of top players make that player their sole priority. Mouratoglou seems to devote an equal amount of time to his own interests as he does with Serena.
and it's clear in the last 2 years he's been looking for younger players to latch onto when she does retire. There's a reason he keeps appearing in the players' boxes for Gauff, Tsitsipas and a couple others. His campaigning is right in our faces. So tacky.
and of course he ruined the Serena-Osaka USO final then denied it. I didn't know this but apparently the rule is a player can get in trouble for coaching even if he/she isn't looking at the coach.
I think Serena should have dumped him a few years ago. Obviously she won't now

R113 Courier does that and it doesn't mean a thing (oh wait)
R101 He describes himself as crazy as a goat (estar como una cabra is a popular way to say crazy as hell in spanish), and his game is pretty crazy. He is irregular on his game, some pretty amazing shots some awful mistakes (he is very good at drop shots but unlike Carlos Alcaraz, who wons an incredible amount of points with his drop shots, Davidovich seems more focused on the show than on shot selection). He even brings drama, his game against Seyboth Wild was full of it.
But Moutet is crazy in the literal sense. When he is off court he seems even sensitive, he likes poetry, and like Shapo he released a rap song a couple of weeks ago, but on court his behaviour is awful, throwing raquets, insults and all that jazz

R154 I don't think Fritz is supposed to be american next big player. I think he has chances to be a good player (like Tiafoe) but i don't think any of the americans are that hyped. Nakashima is doing very well, but he is not the most hyped player of his age (a year ago that would be Tseng but now he is struggling and it's all about Sinner) and there are younger players (Musetti, Alcaraz who are way more hyped).
And the USA have a good bunch of promising players born in 2003 but they are not the most hyped players of that age (Alcaraz, Rune, Mochizuki).
Anyway, americans have a tendency to do very well on juniors only to struggle as pros

ESPN telecast just asked the question to shriver, fernandez: "is serena the greatest female tennis player of all time?"...
OF COURSE ASS KISSER MARY JO is going to yes, since she and her husband i believe are in serena's professional life... she mentioned that serena COULD have won even more singles slams if she hadn't been pregnant or injured.. what about the time she didn't play because she was disinterested in tennis and doing other stuff? whose fault is it that she got pregnant? Mary Jo also mentioned that the reason why serena has won so much because she didn't have any great rivals? ISN'T THIS THEN A GREAT ARGUMENT AGAINST SERENA since martina had chris?
shriver brought up martina's records of singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles and graf winning all 4 majors at least times, plus the grand slam and the olympic gold in the same year...
mary jo countered with serena's doubles titles (which pale to how many martina won 177!) and her olympic doubles titles with venus? (big deal) it's like winning some grand slam doubles titles, not even because your partner HAS to be from the same country which hinders along of great player saddled with nobodies from their own country.........
it seriously irks me when people (j. mcenroe for example) automatically stated that serena is the greatest and that is NOT opinion, just simple fact? WHY? serena actually holds NO all time record (except tying with evert for most u.s.open wins)... and her 23 is only the all time number for the open era, not all time, regardless of court's 11 aussie opens...
oh yeah, mary joe also stated that serena made the game more physical? uh, no, martina and steffi did that already..i've always thought martina and steffi were better athletes, better reflexes, more variety, more endurance and better quote "tennis players" than serena...serena is just a slugger who outslugged the other players because she was physically stronger, NOT because she was a better tennis player with better strokes, footwork, variety, mind and so on...and now at serena's age game plan A the ONLY game plan she ever had doesn't work anymore...
i will always put martina and steffi or steffi and martina over serena, but that's just me...
by Anonymous | reply 238 | September 2, 2020 10:50 PM |
Fokina is obnxious on court, gives off the same aggro energy that we used to see from Nalbandian. At least we got to see Hurkacz change his shirt a couple of times.
by Anonymous | reply 239 | September 2, 2020 10:52 PM |
Davenport, Capriati and Clijsters of the big hitters all hit a flatter, heavier and deeper ball than either Serena or Venus. I do think she's the greatest but she was not a premier ball striker. Her and Venus just muscled the ball around. That's why they started their careers spraying balls everywhere. In the second part of her career Serena became technically better and learned to use angles on the short court better.

R241, but WHY do you think serena is the greatest? what are you basing this on? in terms of actual ability? because record wise, taking EVERYTHING into account she falls behind both martina and steffi, literally the ONLY thing serena has over these two are the singles slam titles and everyone knows that is NOT the only the factor and should not be the most important factor either in my opinion..
serena is physically stronger then martina and steffi, but i think martina and steffi have it over serena in everything else....
by Anonymous | reply 242 | September 2, 2020 11:22 PM |
lmfao always the Serena hater. So Serena "isn't a premier ball striker"? Tell that to all the opponents she's beaten and crushed over the years. If power was the only factor in determining slam winners, Lucic and Keys would have double digit slams each.
There was no depth on the tour when Evert and Navratilova ruled the roost. Austin was a blip on the radar. Goolagong was inconsistent too. Jaeger was a nutty flake.
Graf was an impressive teen but started to dominate as Evert and Navratilova were in their 30s. Once Graf found an age appropriate rival in Seles, she started getting her ass kicked on all surfaces except grass. Then a psycho Graf fan stabbed Seles, ruining the rivalry and letting Graf vulture off a weakened tour in the mid 90s.
You may prefer how Graf and Navratilova played tennis which is fine but to say Serena is somehow beneath them is delusional.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | September 2, 2020 11:24 PM |
and if all you need is a good serve, why aren't the Pliskova twins ranked #1 and #2 with multiple slams? Why didn't Shriver win any singles slams?

r238, I appreciate your passion. Martina is a the top of my list of favorite people in the world, she stood alone, out and proud, practically ALONE for a decade or so. She deserves her own thread.
Still, It's worth mentioning that Serena isn't done! Seriously, I could see her and Venus winning doubles for the next decade, if they wanted to. Martina won her last USOPEN 2006 mixed, at age 49, I think. We could see Serena AND her daughter (in case you hadn't heard) in the draw at 2036 Wimbledon! Also, Serena had a head start. Her father started training her in utero. I never read his book, but he must have given Orasine some elaborate supplements to manufacture those 2 kids.
I remember the first time I read an article about Venus and then saw a profile on WW of Sports or Wimbledon rain delay profile story. At the end of the story they mentioned Serena, "Richard says, he thinks 8 year old Serena will be even better" or something like that. They showed Serena , with her beads, banging the ball and she reminded me of that multi-colored Jiffy Popcorn, with her braids flying all over the place.
Also, pre internet, it was hard to find tennis scores, especially from Europe. Most US newspapers didn't cover them. I read every sport section from the back, because tennis was always last, if they had it. Sunday NYT was the only reliable source. I remember the first time Djokovic beat Nadal on clay, and thought, that's a fluke.

Three years ago Osaka's team asked the press to stop asking her America-centered questions because she said she was not an American and because she didn't know what it was like to be an American. Now she's the most active player on social issues in the US. I wonder if she'll wear a mask with Adama Traore's name on it during the French Open?

evert and martina had to deal with mandlikova too that you forgot to mention, yes, she could be a basket case, but on her "on days" incredible she was...you also forgot make mention that BEFORE austin, jaeger, shriver and whoever, evert and martina had to deal with king, court, goolagong, wade in their teens and early 20's...
in regards to graf vs seles, graf had the head to head edge over seles when seles was stabbed...
i stand by my previous comments, that serena IS beneath martina and graf in terms of nearly every record and accomplishment and beneath these two in terms of tennis abilities like endurance, reflexes, variety, speed, footwork....

King and Court turned 30 in the early 70s lol not the same generation as Evert and Navratilova. By the late 70s neither were at their peak anymore.
Graf had a 6-4 lead over Seles when the stabbing happened. You fail to mention though that the first 3 matches happened in 1989 when Seles was having her first full year on tour at age 15! Seles had won the 1990, 91, 92 RG, 1991, 92, 93 AO and 1991, 92 USO. She was starting to dominate. You can't imply that Graf would have ended up with a winning h2h. We'll never know but the momentum on hardcourt and clay was with Seles before the stabbing. Graf's mid 90s record is most certainly inflated due to the absence of Seles.
Serena is slower than Graf and Hingis? really? at her peak Serena was incredibly fast. Slow reflexes? I'll give you footwork but Serena also has lots of variety. Not sure why you're so keen on trying to diminish Serena.

by Anonymous | reply 285 | September 3, 2020 6:22 PM |
R278.. and 30 year old court was number #1 in 1973 and won 3 of the slams... and 30 year old king won wimbledon in 1975, so your point is?
in regards to the graf vs seles head to head, you can look at either way and make a case for it... just like evert beating 14 and 15 year old austin, and then austin winning 3 times in 10 times, evert winning 0 and 0 the last time they played, the head to head ending 9-8 in austin's favor.... neither way is a true reflection of their head to head.. i have heard from tennis "experts" that graf was beginning to figure out seles even before the stabbing? seles wasn't the same player as she was, but how much lesser of a player was she? 5%? 10% 20%? hard to judge, was graf the same player as well? hard to judge.....
and yes, i think serena is slower then graf AND martina and both have it over serena in terms of footwork as i made mention of earlier, and i think also have the edge of serena in terms of endurance and yes, reflexes, graf HAD to have great reflexes with that forehand production of hers and of course martina had NO PEER in the history of tennis with her reflexes at the net... i never mentioned hingis, you did by the way....
i truly believe that graf and martina could have excelled in any sport not so sure about serena... graf as i've heard from others could have been olympic/olympian level of a sprinter/runner if she had gone into that sport..
i'm NOT so "keen" on diminishing serena, but truth is truth at least in terms of accomplishments.. what i am sick and tired of is so called tennis "experts" AUTOMATICALLY stating unequivocally that Serena is the greatest of all time, as if their opinion is FACT and "well known fact" when it's not!.... and they don't feel the need to fully explain their opinion as fact either!.. is serena one of the greatest of all time? OF COURSE SHE IS! HOWEVER, i personally think that NO SINGLE PLAYER can be undisputed named thee single solitary greatest of all time because there are LITERALLY COUNTLESS VARIABLES AND UNKNOWNS! much less is a variable and a unknown given more important regard than other variables and unknowns and if so why?... if anything there should only be a "all time greatest list" a top 10 list and in NO NUMERICAL ORDER i might add!.. the top 5 in my opinion should including evert, martina, graf, serena and court... and in NO particular order..
same thing for the men i might add...

by Anonymous | reply 291 | September 3, 2020 7:43 PM |
R286 the point is you talked about the top players Navratilova and Evert had to face. By the 80s, Court and King were retired because they were so much older. No one else on tour was consistently competitive with them. It was a weak era until Graf came along but by then, Evert and Navratilova were getting up there in the years too.
It doesn't matter if you heard "experts" say Graf was "figuring out" Seles before the stabbing. The fact remains that Seles won 8 slams between the 1990 RG and 1993 AO. Graf was completely shut out of any slam except Wimbledon during that period. It's no coincidence that she won 4 in a row after Seles was stabbed. How can anyone claim she figured out Seles off of grass during that period?
It's a matter of opinion who had better endurance lol Serena at her peak was a very fast player so I disagree that Graf and Navratilova were faster. Their backhands were quite weak and Serena would have worked those over.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | September 3, 2020 7:46 PM |
Konta what happened? choked against Cirstea? lol
by Anonymous | reply 293 | September 3, 2020 8:06 PM |
Graf had very tough years and not everything has to do with Seles. There was her father's scandal too.
The truth is when Seles was stabbed, Graf was competitive again, even more Arantxa was becoming a threat. Curiously after Seles' stabbing Arantxa had tough loses on all GS and it won't be till the next year when she become a real threat. I find funny how people dismiss Arantxa (yes, she was generally very defensive) but she had a good record against Serena, even when she was past her prime
I don't know what it's going to happen (probably a good bunch of years with a fantastic rivaldry). The Seles that came back was a very good player, but she didn't have the hunger for big wins she had before and she was never at her best form.
I think Graf still has a couple of good years if she wasn't injured, and her two matches against Serena were very competitive, Serena was not still the great Serena, but Graf was very far from her peak too (and both were good enough to win GS that year)
by Anonymous | reply 294 | September 3, 2020 8:09 PM |
Graf was a cold **** for how she responded in the aftermath of Seles' stabbing.
by Anonymous | reply 295 | September 3, 2020 8:14 PM |
I hate rehashing the Graf-Seles business, because it is what-if realness that never makes anyone happy, but two key points have been brought forth worth reiterating:
Graf was a total cunt in the aftermath of the stabbing.
Seles, who was one of the biggest cunts out there at her peak (and I mean that as a compliment), completely lost her cuntiness when she came back to the tour. The fire, the hunger, and the x-factor that outcunted her opponents was all gone.
By most accounts now, though, both are very nice women who like their lives out of the limelight.
by Anonymous | reply 296 | September 3, 2020 8:21 PM |
R292.. experts were stating that graf was and would have figured seles out eventually even IF she hadn't been stabbed, that is what i meant....so on one hand of course graf benefitted, but on the other hand, perhaps she didn't..
martina and chris in their younger years still had to face tough court and king, of course by the time martina and chris were in their primes, court and king were long gone, i'm just stating that early one they did have to face 2 huge all time greats in court and king, and others...
NO ONE who knows tennis would ever call graf or martina's backhands as "weak".... enough said... compared to their forehands? sure, but WEAK? NO! experts still consider graf to have the greatest forehand ever.... and martina's forehand is one of the greatest of all time too..
i've never heard any expert in regards to quickness around the court call serena the greatest at that skill.. it's always graf and martina....and both graf and martina have it way over serena in terms of footwork...
at the end of the day, graf and martina have better accomplishments then serena... THE ONLY record serena has over both of them are the 23 slams in singles.

by Anonymous | reply 300 | September 3, 2020 8:45 PM |
R297 top players would attack the backhands of Navratilova and Graf. Evert and Seles did that a lot and found success
the point is there' s no reason for outrage. A lot of former players regard Serena as the best based on her game and slam count. Serena, Navratilova, Graf and Evert are all amazing players and there's no point hashing out who's really the best

Agreed R321, Misery is definitely showing head.
I feel bad for him — he obviously lives and breathes tennis, but he already destroyed his hips and now he’s probably causing even worse long-term damage by playing in the pros on artificial joints. Logically he should hang it up and become a commentator, but the prospect of relinquishing his passions and dreams while he’s still a fairly young man is probably causing huge existential dread. He’s going to end up needing a wheelchair by the time he’s 60 if he keeps punishing his body this way during his 30s.. At some point you need to put your personal health and longevity ahead of an urge for “greatness”.
