Linda Manz of Days of Heaven, the Wanderers, has died

Linda Manz, the teen actor in films Days of Heaven and Out of the Blue, has died, aged 58.

According to the actor’s family, Manz died of pneumonia and lung cancer.

Manz was best known for her role as the narrator of Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven (1978).

The director cast her when she was just 15, and enhanced her role after becoming so impressed with her skill for improvisation.

Manz’s other credits included Philip Kaufman’s The Wanderers (1979), Dennis Hopper’s cult film Out of the Blue (1980) and Gummo (1997), directed by Spring Breakers‘ Harmony Korine.

She also had a small role in David Fincher’s thriller The Game the same year as Gummo.

Writing on a GoFundMe page set up for her funeral, Michael Guthrie wrote; “Linda was a loving wife, a caring mom, a wonderful grandma and a great friend who was loved by many.”

Tributes for Manz have poured in on social media.

Russian Doll‘s Natasha Lyonne, who once described Manz’s performance in Out of the Blue as one of her “safe havens” in the world, posted a series of stills of the actor at work

Director Stephen Cone (Princess Cyd) added: “I can count on two hands the movies that mean as much to me as Days of Heaven, & on *one* the performances and scenes that mean as much as Linda Manz’s and this final grace note.”

He added: “I’m so sad she’s gone. Just barely of this Earth.”

Film critic Peter Labuza called her role in the Malick film “one of the greatest performances ever”.

Manz is survived by her husband, the camera operator Bobbie Guthrie, two sons and three grandchildren.

Do people not plan for funerals anymore? Half of these stories on people dying nowadays reference a GoFundMe by the second paragraph. She has a husband.

Apparently not, r1, although I see ads on TV for life insurance to cover final expenses.

by Anonymousreply 2August 15, 2020 11:11 AM

WHO?

by Anonymousreply 3August 15, 2020 11:32 AM

Or no life insurance to cover these expenses? Very odd.

by Anonymousreply 4August 15, 2020 12:44 PM

Her work in Days of Heaven was unforgettable. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 5August 15, 2020 12:53 PM

Funny interview--she hadn't seen a movie in 20 years.

R.I.P.

No one cares. Stop replying to yourself to make this thread happen, OP.

You don't know how to use ignore-dar, do you, r7? I haven't replied, until now, since r2.

Just do a car wash like the rest of us poor people!

by Anonymousreply 9August 16, 2020 3:42 AM

Speaking of the Ignore button: bye bye, r7.

She played the "Jo" character on the Facts of Life rip-off "Dorothy" starring Dorothy Louden as a teacher at a private school for girls

Okay, this is weird. I made a comment about Linda Manz on this thread, earlier today.

“Days is Heaven” was great because of her performance. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Regarding the Go Fund Me for funeral expenses, maybe it's become a new tradition? It seems people start them constantly for funerals lately, even if the family is well-heeled. In those instances it's not usually the family starting it but maybe a close friend. A young-ish mother was hit by a truck in my town a few years ago. A Go Fund Me was started for her funeral but the husband donated it to charity as he was CEO or equivalent.

Gummo is such an ugly but fascinating film.

by Anonymousreply 17August 16, 2020 5:04 PM

She reminded me of Tatum O'Neal.

by Anonymousreply 18August 16, 2020 5:13 PM

R15, thank you for that! As I was reading, I could see the images in my head. Just a few weeks ago, I re-watched it. Masterpiece of a film.

by Anonymousreply 19August 16, 2020 5:57 PM

Did I miss what she died of??? Anyone?

by Anonymousreply 20August 16, 2020 6:01 PM

r20, lung cancer

by Anonymousreply 21August 16, 2020 6:03 PM

Lung Cancer. Got it!

by Anonymousreply 22August 16, 2020 6:03 PM

Sad. I remember reading about her in Rona Barrett's Gossip when I was a kid.

[italic]Dorothy[/italic] and [italic]The Facts of Life[/italic] were both part of the fall '79 TV season, but [italic] Dorothy [/italic] only lasted about a month before it got cancelled.

Her bio says she had 3 kids, but her obit reports just 2 children. And for those asking about the Go Fund Me, it seems her husband hasn't worked in at least 30-35 years. Not as a cameraman anyway.

The Criterion Collection has posted a profile of Manz:

Thank you for posting that article. Love Linda Manz. She was one of the greats.

by Anonymousreply 28August 30, 2020 6:28 PM

This girl, she didn’t know where she was goin’ or what she was gonna do.

She didn’t have no money on her.

Maybe she’d meet up with a character.

I was hoping things would work out for her.

She was a good friend of mine.

by Anonymousreply 29August 30, 2020 7:04 PM

That last scene, where she runs off with another girl, has always haunted me. You can’t help but wonder what happened to her character. RIP.
