Celebrities you're surprised are still alive
I'm surprised that Nancy Olson (Betty in Sunset Boulevard) is still alive, while the rest of the cast is long gone. I suppose it's not surprising given the age difference between her and everyone else in the film, but still ... the film featured several people associated with the silent era. I guess this makes it more impressive to me.
Another surprise is jazz vocalist Helen Merrill, for similar reasons. She got her start in the 1950s and recorded with, eg, Clifford Brown, whom I associate with an earlier (and long gone) generation of jazz musicians.

Connie Francis. We were channel surfing last night and there was a commercial for one of those Time Life music collections with a C.F. song playing. My husband bet me that she was still alive and I said no way. Obviously I lost.

r24 wow. Had no idea.
Sad that she's had to bury two of her three children. I would never want to live to be that old. She's essentially the only one left of her generation.
My grandmother lived to be 102. She had seven siblings (close-knit Italian family) and her last sibling died over ten years before her. She was the only one left, and it was very lonely for her.

I like the "six degrees" type of connections that great age makes possible. Olson did not appear in the scene with Keaton, Nilsson, Warner, and Swanson but she's connected to that era by virtue of being in the film. The "waxworks" in a way to connect Olson to very early film history. I always hope that young people are wise enough to listen to their elderly family members to get stories.
Similarly, Prince Charles' great-grandmother Queen Mary was the great-granddaughter of King George III. I know it sounds weird, but I always wonder if P Charles remembers Q Mary telling him stories of the royal family that she knew as a child.

Why are you people not posting pictures of the people you’re posting? Why? Why can’t you at least be considerate of others to post a picture of the people? Did you ever think that maybe not everyone knows who these fucking people are right off the bat? Did you? Did your ever stop for one minute of your filthy selfish little lives to think of others and to think they may not know who these people are without a picture?
|by Anonymous||reply 45||08/16/2020|

Janis Paige, the original star of "The Pajama Game" on Broadway, is still alive at 97.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||08/16/2020|
I think Janis Paige doesn't get enough love. She was one of Fred's great dance partners. Ginger was elegant, Rita was ravishing, but when Janis did Stereophonic Sound (from Silk Stockings) with him she kept up and spurred him on. I don't love the late '50s choreography generally as it's trying to incorporate Fosse-like moves (without Fosse).

Also still alive from that show is handsome Manila-born Patrick Adiarte (78), whom you may remember as Prince Chulalongkorn in THE KING AND I, Ho-Jon in M*A*S*H and his appearance in the Brady Bunch Hawaii episodes, where his tight shorts made this 15 year old feel funny in places he'd not felt funny before (he was 29 in that photo, btw)

R220, I wasn't categorizing this as an "argument". Obviously there's hyprocrisy if we simplify the entire subject into whether it's wrong to kill anyone. But if there's any retribution left in this godforsaken place,Trump will get his. That's all any of us can hope for in whatever form.

My comment about Carole Cook being 'salty' referred to her bawdy stories on a radio show which aired years before Trump was even elected. In no way was I advocating violence. R237, Robert Clary came to my junior high school back in the 1980s to speak about the Holocaust (he survived Buchenwald), and presented a graphic documentary that made my stomach turn and gave me nightmares for weeks. I got his autograph, but not being a Hogan's Heroes fan (my sister watched the reruns all the time), and considering the circumstances of our interaction, it wasn't exactly a thrill. Nevertheless, I'm surprised he's still alive, and good for him for having a long life despite that horror of an experience.

But, the much less likely scenario---the assassination of a minority politician, has [R119] and [R134] cowering in concern and fear. LOL. Not hypocrisy at all. Someone who is evil, who is responsible for 200,000 deaths and counting, who is dismantling a democratic country, and because of their actions are bringing about climate disaster, it's normal one would want them gone one way or the other. Just like one would with any evil force in the world. Trump can't be reasoned with, he is beyond repair, and with his evil nature just pulls everything down with him. The other politicians mentioned aren't like that. Anyone who can't see that at this point needs to check their moral compass, their is something wrong with it if they can't see the difference.

Back to Nancy Olson. . .In 1974 I was a lovely and precocious 18 yr. old living in the guest house of writer/actor George Furth. He was working on the movie "Airport 75" with Ms. Olson. In spite of his own success as a writer ( "Company"), George was a big name-dropper and mentioned her name in passing, not thinking I'd know who she was. Of course, I knew who she was! He went on to tell me she thought she had been forgotten by my generation. Turns out Ms. Olson maintained her figure by avoiding the craft table on set in favor of her homemade Endive salad. She gave George a taste and told him to give her a call if he wanted the recipe. Using this recipe as an excuse George called her and handed the phone off to me, telling her I was his cook. She relayed the recipe (torn not chopped endive leaves and crushed cranberries, as I recall) in under 5 min. and we spent the next hour talking about the making of Sunset Blvd. Thus a tentative friendship was born. George took me to the "Airport 75" set to meet her. She in turn invited me to go with her to a party at Rudi Gernrichs house. Unbeknownst to me, she had spoken to Mr. Gernrich about me, thinking I would be the "exotic" model type he was in search of for his "unisex" line of clothes. Thus a short and not very profitable side-carrier was born. My budding friendship with Ms. Olsen came to a screeching halt when she tried to push her newfound fellowship in the Church of Scientology on me. An intelligent, naive, and sophisticated lady of many contradictions, I believe the secret of Ms. Olsons longevity is Endive Salad, two homosexual husbands and genetics.

In the play he's portrayed as straight. I got his autograph one night when I noticed him at the back of the theater (I only knew him because I'd seen him on the Tony Awards). Nice guy, seemed thrilled with their resurgence in popularity,
The younger Gaudio seemed to be going for that Frankie Avalon / Fabian look.

Dear Glynis turned 97 on October but did any of you bitches think to send her a card?

Happy 95th Joyce Randolph!
|by Anonymous||reply 400||10/21/2020|
Joyce Randolph turned 96 today.
|by Anonymous||reply 401||10/21/2020|
Thank for the correction R401
|by Anonymous||reply 402||10/21/2020|
You're quite welcome, R402.

If anyone was surprised that Marge Champion was still alive at 101, apparently she no longer is. I haven't seen an obit yet, though.
|by Anonymous||reply 405||10/21/2020|
Ann Blythe is 92.
I honestly thought she died years ago.
|by Anonymous||reply 406||Last Thursday at 2:40 AM|
Marge Champion (Marjorie Belcher---what an awful name) is dead as a door nail and her obits are everywhere
|by Anonymous||reply 407||Last Thursday at 5:03 AM|
They weren't "everywhere" last night. But never pass up an opportunity to be gratuitously bitchy, R407.
|by Anonymous||reply 408||Last Thursday at 9:30 AM|
Mel Brooks. I thought he died years ago, but he just made a video endorsement for Biden/Harris. Glad he's still around.
|by Anonymous||reply 409||Last Thursday at 10:21 AM|
Hey hypocrite baiters. Go fuck yourselves! If you still respect and are voting for Donald Trump I wish YOU would die. Just crawl in your shit hole and rot. I HATE all racist republicans pus boils. A curse upon you all!!! Traitors!!!

Cicely Tyson, 95
She looks great. A lot better than Ms Warwick with an E.
|by Anonymous||reply 411||Last Thursday at 4:01 PM|
Ok, so I'm stretching the term "celebrity," but I was so happy to see the then-105 Virginia McLaurin who danced in the White House with the Obamas is still alive at 111.
|by Anonymous||reply 412||Last Thursday at 4:10 PM|
R412 That's incredible. I was wondering whether she was still alive.
|by Anonymous||reply 413||Last Thursday at 5:34 PM|
r415 Sad to say, Dame Vera is no longer with us. She died in June of this year. RIP
|by Anonymous||reply 416||Last Thursday at 9:50 PM|
I'm surprised Sir Elton John is still alive. That cunt's been cunting around so long. What with the drugs and booze! But I have to admit I would be sorry if we lost him. I would feel like people felt when they lost a Beatle. Sir Elton is our John Lennon!

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF lyricist Sheldon Harnick is still alive at 96
His brother Jay was married to DL fave Barbara Barrie (a youthful 89) until his death in 2007.
Barrie was fired from her role as Yente, the matchmaker, in the 2004 revival of FIDDLER. Things must've been rather tense around the seder table at the Harnick house that year.

Donna Mills, Michelle Lee Van, Joan Van Ark (Abby Cunningham, Ewing, Karen McKenzi, Valene Ewing)
|by Anonymous||reply 419||Last Friday at 6:27 AM|
Comparing Sir Elton to John Lennon is just ridiculous. He never had the talent. Yoko, for all her lack of talent, was smart enough to exit the public spotlight. I have more respect for her despite being a talentless hack than I do for Elton.
|by Anonymous||reply 420||Last Friday at 8:41 AM|
Elton does have talent. He may be a douche but he's not an untalented douche
|by Anonymous||reply 421||Last Friday at 9:11 AM|
Sir Elton is a coaster. He was one in the 80s when SPY magazine noticed and he's one now.
|by Anonymous||reply 422||Last Friday at 10:51 AM|
Elton was never in The Coasters.

R423: Good example of why puns are difficult to put over as good jokes.

I'm a little surprised Cicely Tyson is alive at 95. She's the oldest Oscar-nominated actress still live, followed by Fernanda Montenegro at 92.
As for the winning actresses, there sure was a big gap between Olivia and Woodward. The actresses in the intervening ages sure had a rough go.
Oldest living Best Actor awardee is Gene Hackman, at the same age of 90 as Woodward. Next is Jack Nicholson, shockingly.
|by Anonymous||reply 425||Last Friday at 12:10 PM|
R426, Michelle Lee Van Cleef, Dutch-Chinese actress of yesteryear.
|by Anonymous||reply 427||Last Friday at 4:08 PM|
Wow, I can't believe Hackman is 90.
|by Anonymous||reply 428||Last Friday at 4:13 PM|
Yeah me neither R428. I thought Hackman was in his late seventies.

Walter Mondale, John Warner, Adlai Stevenson III
|by Anonymous||reply 430||Last Friday at 4:39 PM|
I didn't know Mondale was still alive
|by Anonymous||reply 431||Last Friday at 4:40 PM|
Mondale has survived his wife and one of his three kids.
|by Anonymous||reply 432||Last Friday at 4:43 PM|
Which reminds me that Michael Dukakis is still alive. He'll be 87 this coming November 3.
|by Anonymous||reply 433||Last Friday at 4:58 PM|
R419, don't forget Claudia Lonow, you bitch!
|by Anonymous||reply 434||Last Friday at 5:39 PM|
Jimmy Carter, too ... so all three losing candidates in the 1980s presidential elections are alive, while both of the winners (Bush and Reagan) are dead.
|by Anonymous||reply 435||Last Friday at 8:28 PM|
I assumed Hal Holbrook was dead, but he's still alive and he's six months older than Angela Lansbury!
Larry Storch from F Troop turns ninety-eight in January!

I'm embarrassed to say that, until I saw him in the Greatest Living Homosexualist' thread, I thought David Hockney was dead.
He's still alive at 83

Anderson's obviously gay son tried to sell me a condo once. He clearly liked telling people he was John Anderson's son. Luckily this was DC where some people actually knew who Anderson was.
|by Anonymous||reply 443||Last Saturday at 7:34 PM|
And yet no one cares who Anderson or his son is R443.
|by Anonymous||reply 444||Last Saturday at 8:11 PM|
John Anderson was the only Republican I've ever voted for. (And I've been voting since 1972.)
|by Anonymous||reply 445||Last Saturday at 8:39 PM|
How cute, R446 thinks he's insulting R445.
When you've lost as many friends as I have (and presumably R445 has, since we're about the same age), it's a privilege to grow old. As a former colleague of mine, who survived cancer, used to say 'Any day I wake up on this side of the grass is a good one'.
My sincerest wish for R446 is that s/he lives long enough to be derided for being 'ancient'
|by Anonymous||reply 447||Last Sunday at 7:55 AM|
Give it a rest. Anderson is the answer to a trivia question at this point.
