As horrible as it is when anyone dies, he’s couldn’t have timed it better. The documentary “Good Trouble” about his life just came out a week or so ago and got good reviews. This will assure an Oscar nom for sure.

FUCK YOU! He got beat to a pulp, and put in jail, just for being black. Bitches these days have no idea what people had to go through, years ago. He also saw the gay rights movement as being aligned with the black rights movement. He was a good man. WEAR YOUR FUCKING MASKS

Exactly. A friend worked with the crew in Atlanta back in the day when they were very young - John, Julian and Jane Bond included. He always used the term saint when talking about John. Julian was the pretty one born of privilege who got all the publicity and praise and John was just a not-so-pretty humble son of poor share croppers. But in the end it was John's incredible bravery and strength and intellectual honesty that served others in the best way possible. The world is a lesser place with his death.

Julian Bond and John Lewis made up eventually after their very bitter race for Congress, and both called out MLK III harshly for arranging his mother’s funeral at a congregation led by a homophobic pastor (Bond, Lewis, and Coretta Scott King all steadfastly and publicly supported gay rights). Lewis also publicly condemned Farrakhan for his bigotry, sexism, homophobia, and antisemitism and refused to attend the Million Man March, and waaaay back in the day refused to support SNCC (which he and Bond cofounded) after Stokely Carmichael rose to power and dropped Gandhian nonviolence. (Carmichael, who famously said the only position for women in SNCC was prone.) Lewis even inadvertently pushed MLK Jr. forward in his tactics—King and the other movement figures had been afraid of getting arrested, or doing anything more provocative than boycotts, thinking the stigma around jail would hurt the reputation of the movement, before he saw the student sit-in leaders like Lewis take that risk.
Lewis totally disregarded fear to follow his moral compass where it pointed him. Perhaps the strongest example of that since Harriet Tubman.

R86 Some people actually care about and study history. John Lewis is an American historical figure.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | July 18, 2020 4:52 PM |
In the Selma days (I have only seen footage), he was so impressive. He was a youngster trying to get a grip on the world and the hand his people had been dealt. You could see in his eyes the courage of his conviction. It was the impervious nature of youth. Unlike most, he kept that fire in his belly.
He was a link to our past and didn't earn his nickname for no reason The conscience of the congress.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | July 18, 2020 4:54 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 91 | July 18, 2020 4:56 PM |
R86 There are a lot of good histories of the movement out there, my favorite being Taylor Branch’s trilogy. It gets into all the tiny details, the infighting, the divides between the different factions, etc. After Julian Bond lost the Congressional primary to Lewis, he spent many years as a college professor teaching classes about those years and I was fortunate enough to take one. He wasn’t scant with praise for Lewis even after the bad blood between them. Lewis was famous for meeting with nearly anyone who called his office and asked to shake his hand. The GOP liked to criticize him as a has-been, and granted, he was not some LBJ-esque powerhouse legislator, but he used the office to try and continue motivating people. He was a generous man, not one of those “living icons” who tries to preserve a mystique.

Please do not take Ava Duvernay's Selma as the gospel. She took great liberties with fact to tell a story that fit her agenda. That was a great movement which involved people from all over and brought people together. It was truly beautiful and inspiring and showed what can happen when people work together rather than trying to tear each other down. Ava never wanted to tell the real story which is why she tried to diminish what Johnson did among other things. Watch the documentaries about it. They are more exciting and truthful than Ava's movie.
She can never be trusted with the truth.

R101, sorry I forgot to sign my post at R100. So anyone you disagree with is a freeper. LOL!
There is no real talent to Ava. Not in film making and not in historical accuracy. She may be very talented in public relations, I'll grant her that. I wouldn't even call her particularly "woke". She is an opportunist who finally found a way into filmmaking (apart from shilling for studios) and her own fame.
Ava's historical "inaccuracies" are not just liberties, they are wholesale rewriting of history and events which twist historical truths and meaning. In so doing she dishonors that history and its real meaning for a society.
