I wonder why Naya went BACK into the water after she was safe in the woods with deer feeding her pinecones.
Did she go back after her phone?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 13, 2020 6:10 PM |
Her acting (and Amber Riley's voice) was the one reason why I stuck with Glee for as long as I did. Despite being so disconnected from it, I actually worked up a few tears when Santana and her grandmother managed to reconcile at her wedding.
I really have to hand it to the Glee cast (that isn't Lea Michelle or Chris Colfer). Heather Morris was on Twitter saying she was trying to volunteer to help search, and Amber Riley made a comment that really read people who were begging them for some kind of performative grief. Part of me hopes that despite knowing how awful the putative leads were to each other and the cast at large--the actual ones worth watching--were close.
I remember Jane Lynch having to go on the Tonight Show to promote Hollywood Game Night the week after Monteith died, and she just looked so shell-shocked. I hope that means I'm right.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 13, 2020 7:02 PM |
R16 It's upsetting to me, too.
With Corey, it was a surprise as I wasn't aware of his addiction issues. He was actively playing with fire, so as much as addiction is a bitch, he directly risked his life.
Learning that Salling was into CP was shocking and surreal. Somehow I always think of pedos as being older guys. I would likely end my life, too, if I was a pedophile.
Naya was trying to do something fun with her child, and suffered a tragic accident. My emotions are the same as they would be for any young mother and child in this scenario, but I suppose heightened by the fact that her family has to go through this in the public eye.
Her celebrity has little to do with it, even though I really enjoyed Naya's acting on the few seasons I watched. It's just a freaking heartbreaking situation. Four is way too young to lose your mother.
I got her ex does right by her family and lets them have an active role in Josey's life.

There's no dignity in having multiple helicopters hovering around, filming the body bag that is still dripping water. I wish they had a stretcher to transfer her on, because seeing two men struggle to keep her off the ground and get her in the van did not feel like a solemn way to move a dead body.
I say this knowing that by watching the video, I am contributing to their profiting off of filming. I'm going to go sit in shame now.
I also say it with utmost respect for the team who worked to recover her body. They did a remarkable job.

It sounds to me that she helped her little boy into the boat, and perhaps as the boat wasn't anchored, a current may have pushed the boat towards her and sort of pulled her underneath it, trapping her below.
Having to use dental records to officially identify her, it is so fucking sad. Poor girl. R.I.P.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | July 13, 2020 9:49 PM |
I missed the press conference, why are they doing the dental vs finger prints?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | July 13, 2020 9:51 PM |
R60 and R61 I would have thought dental records would be a blessing in that they hopefully aren’t asking any family members to do the confirmation so they don’t need to look at her in her current state.
As for fingerprints, you know what your hands look like after being in the tub or pool for 45 minutes. I’m sure after days in water there’s all kinds of distortions you would get in trying to get a clear print.

That’s heartbreaking if that is the case, which it sounds like it is. I’m sure they did get more info from the boy and maybe proper child therapists are now talking to him.
At first I was definitely convinced that she wasn’t going to hop in to this murky, dangerous lake to go swimming, let alone let the kid swim. But maybe they were taking a photo in the water, or were warm and wanted to cool off quick or maybe kid was begging her to go in.
The reality of the news is so sad even though we all knew the outcome.

You know I think that's exactly what happened. She had put her kid back in the boat, and she took a picture of him and sent it to a relative. They found him on the boat 90 minutes later. It was the last communication from her. I bet she plopped him back in the boat, took his picture and very probably dropped her phone so she went back in the water. Probably exhausted. They said that lake is dangerous. it's cold and has currents.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | July 14, 2020 1:54 AM |

How can you convey all your love and respect for someone in one post? How can you summarize a decade of friendship and laughter with words alone? If you were friends with Naya Rivera, you simply can’t. Her brilliance and humor were unmatched. Her beauty and talent were otherworldly. She spoke truth to power with poise and fearlessness. She could turn a bad day into a great day with a single remark. She inspired and uplifted people without even trying. Being close to her was both a badge of honor and a suit of armor. Naya was truly one of a kind, and she always will be. 💔

R106 I was just about to post about this it's hard to believe but according to the sheriffs that theory is plausible, they even talk about it in the press conference.
According to this video the son said the last that he saw her was when he got boosted into the boat by her and then she immediately disappeared under the water. So the theory is since the boat was unanchored the boat drifted, she panicked but had enough energy to swim to the boat and boost her son back into the boat but couldn't save herself. She probably usually anchors the boat but forgot to this time.
Damn Naya I've said deservedly bad shit about her before all this but I have to admit she wasn't selfish at the last moment.

I have to stick up for anyone who hasn't posted. When my brother died, it was a local news story. There were reporters outside the funeral, at the cemetery, etc. That was incredibly hard, and the microscope was about 1000x smaller than a celebrity death, especially with a rabid fan base. There's no right way to grieve, and some people prefer to do it privately. And I'm sure some of them haven't remained close to her since the show ended and don't feel the need to be performative about it.
I feel like in the last few years, grief has become community pornography. Everyone feels the need to post anytime someone of note dies. Kelly Preston died. Do I feel bad for her loved ones? Sure. Do I personally care? Meh.

The big blowout on the Glee set that made the tabloids was actually between Naya and Brad Falchuk, about Lea Michele.
She basically says in her book that after the incident the media was fed rumors of her firing from Glee by Lea Michele. She doesn't really name her but it's made crystal clear who she's talking about.

I can’t immediately think of another TV show, or film, that has had three main cast members of this sort of age, die during production / within a few years of it ending, can anyone else? I’m not counting The Twilight Zone which was one incident...
Although claims are made for the Poltergeist curse and a number of cast members did die before their time, it is only Dominique Dunne and Heather O’Rourke’s deaths that were genuinely shocking IMO (although indeed both fairly shocking and it wasn’t a big main cast).

A lot of it--in addition to how beautifully they handled her coming out--was because unlike basically every other couple on the show--there was never a shred of toxicity to Santana and Brittany. There was zero logical reason to marry off Kurt and Blaine, apart from throwing chum in the water for the fangirls. But the two girls getting married? Made total sense.

R181, I didn't know Glee has recently been released on Netflix, which could explain the influx of young fans. Though for twitter crazies age seems irrelevant.
In other news, Amber Riley posted this video of Naya and her son singing, just to drive home the tragedy in case we missed it. I stopped watching Glee early on, so guess I'm surprised the cast stayed so close. Naya seems like she was a live wire and well loved.

R177 I think the biggest issue was the fangirl takeover . Dianna Agron's tribute to Naya on Instagram is beautifully composed and rendered. Agron is quite literate and cultured. And lovely. I've seen her at a few poetry readings. Naya must have been a fun friend for her. What a ride those kids had. No they weren't teens, but they were all quite young in 2009. And the show became a phenomenon very quickly.
That photo of them all standing on the beach could never be staged. All those cast members and old friends in the same place - present for her body when it was taken from the water. It was extremely moving as a tribute to their lasting love for Naya. Beautiful thing to see these days.

The autopsy found “No traumatic injuries or disease processes” and no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved in her test. Samples have been submitted for toxicology testing.

r106 according to what the sheriffs heard from her son, the boy told them that his mom put him on the boat and never got out of the water. I heard it over and over on the radio that day.
The boats engine was left running, so it was moving while they were in the water. Naya had to get them both to the boat while the boat was moving away from them. She had enough energy to swim them both to the boat, get her son on the boat but not enough energy to get herself out of the water.
On August 25, 2008, 39-year-old Anatoly Naftoli Smolyansky drowned in the lake. Smolyansky was on a boat with his family when his 5-year-old daughter fell into the water. Smolyansky jumped into the water to save her but disappeared beneath the surface as he was pushing her back toward the boat. Smolyansky's 9-year-old son aided in his sister's rescue and both children survived. After a week-long search, Smolyansky's body was found floating north of Diablo Cove by a group of Lake Piru rangers and Ventura County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue divers. ---taken from the wiki about Lake Piru

If that’s a man made lake, and it’s full of debris that regularly kills people, why don’t they close it to swimming or something? I doubt the original idea was to create a lake that was so dark and dangerous it would kill people.
Aren’t normal lakes usually less full of debris than this?
“We took them out to the exact spot where the body was found, just off the north point of Diablo Cove,” [Eric] Buschow [of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office] told Us, noting that the late actress’ father, George Rivera, also made a trip to Lake Piru.
These is what's allowed at Diablo Cove:
3. (g) Swimming or wading in Diablo Cove is permissible along the shoreline and in the waters within the 5 miles per hour buoy line of the Cove extending out into the water no more than 50 feet from the shore. Swimming in the deep waters of the Cove is permissible only if the swimmer is swimming off of an anchored boat and so long as the swimmer is within 50 feet of the vessel. It is not permissible to swim in the deep waters of the Cove if swimming from the shore, unless otherwise provided in this policy or if authorized by the District’s General Manager and/or his or her designee.

As mentioned on another thread, it's a man made lake created with a dam to serve as a reservoir for the LA water system. That's why there are so many dead trees and other debris at the bottom; they don't clean those areas out before they dam them up. Perhaps swimming should be forbidden.

204 she helped him climb onto the boat then disappeared under the water. She didn't toss him on the boat. There is a ladder on back of the boat next to the engine so you can lower yourself into the water from the boat or climb back up into the boat from the water.
This is what her son told the sheriff. You don't have to believe it.

by Anonymous | reply 218 | July 15, 2020 12:33 AM |
It's interesting to me that Ryan Murphy continued to give Lea Michelle and Emma Roberts roles in his projects when Naya Rivera was exponentially more talented than the both combined. It clearly wasn't because Murphy doesn't like actresses with diva attitudes or who are rude to cast and crew.
Sadly, I think the toxicology report is going to reveal Naya was on something and that's what caused her to drown. I know the Twitter stans are creaming over the "she saved her son with her last breath" narrative, but it's pretty clear she was negligent and possibly high. They went into the water without anchoring the boat.

R216 - I also hadn't seen Diablo Canyon mentioned anywhere else, but it's a direct quote attributed to Eric Buschow of the Sheriff's Department.
According to his words — 'just off the north point of Diablo Cove' — she was just outside the cove and therefore in an area where swimming is prohibited. It looks like swimming is limited to beaches and specific areas of shoreline including some of the coves. I'm not familiar with American descriptors, but in my experience a person familiar with SAR would never use that wording in reference to the tiny point [italic]within[/italic] the cove that way. Also, several reports claimed she was found near the Narrows, also placing her outside of the cove.
Swimming from anchored boats is allowed in specified areas within the coves, but with restrictions. I quoted the Diablo Cove regulations to give an idea of what is and isn't allowed. Even if she had been within it and in an area where swimming is allowed, leaving a running, unanchored boat is verboten, obviously.
Barring the kid falling overboard (which would have been mentioned by now) and her jumping in in a state of panic without thinking about the boat, her actions put a lot of lives in danger.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | July 15, 2020 12:56 AM |
R220 At no time has anybody - including her son - said he fell into the water. Which means she chose to go into the water with her 4 year old without anchoring the fucking boat and leaving the motor running. Not to mention that bizarre parking job. If she wasn't high she was jaw-droppingly irresponsible. That doesn't make it any less tragic or make her an awful mother. It simply means the melodramatic narrative that she saved her son with her last breath miiiight be a bit off.

Wonder why Ryan did continue to work with Lea. Could it be no one ever told him how horrible she was? Or was he just blind to it for some reason?
I know at the beginning of the show Lea and Diana lived together. There were blinds that hinted they were lovers. Lea likes to cook and they would have dinner parties and invite the cast over. They seemed like a happy couple living in domestic bliss as well as working together. After some time there were blinds that began hinting at trouble with this pair (Lea/Diana). The blinds talked about how one of the partners was beginning to want others to join in, in the bedroom. Then the blinds talked about the straying partner wilding out and just fucking everyone they could get their hands on. The blind item couple then broke up leaving the faithful partner heartbroken. The faithful partner began to be a problem on the set because of their emotions. At some point in the show you can see that Diana's character began to get sidelined for Lea's character. I remember watching the show with all the gossip in mind and it did seem to be playing out like the gossip indicated.
I mention the gossip wondering if Lea was okay until she and Diana broke up and once they broke up Diana became such a pain in the ass emotionally that Lea turned into the monster. Or maybe all the dick she was taking made her crazy?

There is a limit to the information that can be pulled from a 4-year-old, even if he is being interviewed by an expert. We will probably never know exactly how or why Naya drowned, but the "she saved her son before she went under" theory is surely the most comforting one for her family. Barring any evidence to the contrary, and because it is the kindest thing to do, I believe the police are going to allow that to be the last word on this tragedy.

Naya was familiar with the lake, she'd been going there for years. Sometimes because we are in familiar territory we get careless, our comfort can make us forget that we still have to make an effort to be safe.
by Anonymous | reply 228 | July 15, 2020 1:17 AM |
While it may seem like the kindest thing for her family, R227, if the Sheriff's Department doesn't speak out on the dangers of a lone adult (in sole charge of a four-year-old child in this case) leaving a running, unanchored boat in order to swim in deep water without a life vest then they're actively endangering other lives, including their own SAR people.
by Anonymous | reply 229 | July 15, 2020 1:38 AM |
R219 I think part of your theory is correct, however she can be under the influence and be a good mother at the same time. While that may sound like a contradiction I am sure her motherly instinct would have kicked in when she sensed danger. So it’s not far fetched to assume her final actions were saving her sons life. That’s how mothers should act.
by Anonymous | reply 230 | July 15, 2020 1:45 AM |
Here 229 another example, on the very same lake.
She most likely did die after saving her son by getting him to the boat and helping him climb aboard.
On August 25, 2008, 39-year-old Anatoly Naftoli Smolyansky drowned in the lake. Smolyansky was on a boat with his family when his 5-year-old daughter fell into the water. Smolyansky jumped into the water to save her but [bold]disappeared beneath the surface as he was pushing her back toward the boat.[/bold] Smolyansky's 9-year-old son aided in his sister's rescue and both children survived. After a week-long search, Smolyansky's body was found floating north of Diablo Cove by a group of Lake Piru rangers and Ventura County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue divers. ---taken from the wiki about Lake Piru

I'm afraid we will never know the real story given that the only eye witness is a 4 year old. Perhaps for the best...
Do the people that rent those boats not provide some instructions on how to operate the boat?
by Anonymous | reply 232 | July 15, 2020 1:46 AM |
She probably didn’t read any of the posted signs. It sounds like there were a lot of directions about where you can and can’t go. Probably nobody that lives there reads them.
But letting the boat run sounds really dangerous. Before you knew it, the boat would be gone out of your reach. Maybe she got her son on, and was so tired from the struggle she couldn’t catch it. She was a small woman, he was probably heavy to get out of the water.
There were so many mistakes involved, I do think she’d had something to drink. Everything about this suggests carelessness. If it hasn’t been for Covid, she probably would have had friends there and there would have been someone to pull her aboard. Swimming alone with a small child that can’t help you is dangerous. She was probably trying to get him fresh air away from people, but boats and water can be dangerous.
When I was a kid I fell out of a small motorboat. I was wearing a life preserver but I sank pretty far down. I had to kick and push myself up. It seemed to take forever. I can’t swim. I had no idea what to do, I just remembered seeing people swim on tv and I remembered what they did with their feet, so I did that. It was terrifying, looking up and seeing the sun above. I didn’t pop straight up like a cork like you would think.
I feel so sorry for her. Her last moments must have been terrifying, sinking and seeing the light above, and she must have been thinking she had to get back to her son, but she couldn’t save herself. All she could do is hope he stayed on the boat and didn’t try to dive after her. He was too small to know how dangerous it was.

Do these pontoon boats have some kind of big ass anchors? Are they on a winch? How would there be an anchor she could have single handedly maneuvered that could keep the boat from moving?

Hell, I almost had a scare while sober in a similar lake to this one. My foot momentarily got caught in some arundo, and it didn't take long for panic to set in. I freed myself up, but this is not an atypical near-drowning experience. Of course, I was a 17-year-old boy -- prime demographic for drownings are over-confident and/or intoxicated teen boys and young men -- it's not usually mothers with children.

Why wouldn't it have an anchor?
I was basing my post on a Reddit post claiming the Lake Piru rentals were all fitted with the EZ Anchor-Puller system. I should have added a disclaimer. It does make sense though, that they'd try to make things as easy as possible for inexperienced renters.
If true, this is what the switch looks like.

r235 Not difficult to imagine Lea is the same kind of girl who in college finds out a lesbian has a huge crush on her and has no problem soaking up the attention. She's an attention whore, I don't think it mattered in the beginning of Glee that the attention was from Diana. But she grew tired of it and wanted to bring men into their couple and eventually just began to fuck every willing guy she could find.

by Anonymous | reply 269 | July 17, 2020 1:00 AM |
Dropping an anchor in a lake filled with debris and trees seems like a bad idea. The anchor is likely to get stuck on all the trees.
I agree that likely she had the boat idling but the current drifted it away from where they were swimming. Strange though when alone on a lake with little boat traffic to not be keeping an eye on the boat or notice it drifting. There was a ladder on the back of the boat so she just had to push her kid to the ladder. An almost 5 year old can climb up a ladder no problem. I am still not sure why she drowned but I agree with the post above that 'saving her son' makes her death seem heroic and they will likely run with that.

Colfer writes a touching tribute to Naya and manages to shade Murphy too.
As an actress, Naya could tell a whole story with one expression. It didn’t matter how outrageous the plot was, she spoke with so much authenticity, she made you believe every word she said, and often, you’d forget she was acting at all.
She was never afraid to stand up to authority, she always called out mistreatment where she saw it and she always told you the truth — even when it was hard to hear.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | July 22, 2020 7:20 AM |
Naya Rivera was zipping around in a rented pontoon boat on a lake outside of Los Angeles with her young son Josey on the afternoon of July 8 when she reached out to her dad - George Rivera - with a FaceTime call, looking for a bit of advice.
"She would always bounce stuff off me," George, 64, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview for this week's issue. "And she wanted to go swimming with Josey out in the middle of the lake."
But when his eldest daughter informed him that THE BOAT DIDN'T HAVE AN ANCHOR, George - who was taking a break from remodeling his home in Knoxville, Tennessee, when the call came through - instantly realized that jumping into the lake for a swim was a bad idea.
After about three minutes, their FaceTime call cut out. "It was just heartbreaking," says George, who was left staring at the screenshot he snapped of his daughter in sunglasses and a baseball cap, grinning beneath the boat's canopy with a bright blue sky overhead.

It would be more interesting if this were a suicide or if she was very drunk or high, but the rather more dull truth is that it was likely an accident from fairly low-key causes. A reminder that many deaths are fairly banal.
She had had a little bit of White Claw, was on meds, didn’t eat properly — not exactly Cory Monteith levels of indulgence but not insignificant when taken together — and went out on the water and then into it in a not very good decision. The combination of stuff in her system very possibly affected her judgment, and/or reaction times to a sudden current, cramp or fatigue.
She drowned probably within a couple of minutes of getting into trouble. Accidental drownings are relatively common and suicides by drowning fairly rare. Often people will say that “X knew boats, X could swim, X wouldn’t do something dumb like jumping in there, this doesn’t make sense!!”, but people frequently overestimate their swimming ability especially in outdoor conditions, and underestimate cold water dangers.
