Can't they just pick another neighborhood and declare it Transtown? The Shim?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 10, 2020 2:41 PM |
I always thought the tag "Boystown" was demeaning to gay men. I don't think it was a name chosen by gay men. It's not even inclusive of gay women.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 10, 2020 2:42 PM |
So fucking stupid. The backlash can’t come fast enough.
R10 there would be like 17 people living there, because trans people are such a minuscule portion of the population.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 10, 2020 2:43 PM |
Some people like to compare gay men to trans people, but this illustrates the difference perfectly: we want our own spaces, they want to take over other's. If they didn't, they would just start "Transtown" instead of this shit.

[quote]“I’ve seen lesbian friends told in gay bars, ‘Why are you here, this our neighborhood” by gay men, and this is because we have signs in our street [that say Boystown]” said Camp. “The ‘Boystown’ signs lead people to assume the neighborhood is set up for the boys.”
Uh, yeah. It was.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 10, 2020 2:44 PM |
R8 - Exactly. You want a Transville? START YOUR OWN SHIT. Make your OWN neighborhood.
Boystown is not a formal name by any means -it's a nickname.
And lesbians traditionally had Andersonville as their neighborhood, but we all know that lesbian bars are now only something to be found by archaeologists.
I don't believe that the gays said the things that were claimed in the article. And, even if some drunk, loud-mouthed bitchy queen DID say something, fucking call him a bitch and move along.
They want this cocoon of positivity, attention, and spotlight ALL. THE. FUCKING. TIME.
Hey Trans - Start your own stuff for once. Leave us the fuck alone.

I've never seen women in Boystown bars not get served just as much as anyone else. Now, you do have to angle for position in busy bars, but that's the same EVERYWHERE where you have to get the bartender's attention.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 10, 2020 3:25 PM |
I object to a renaming. It WAS the gay boys who made that neighborhood and fought hard to make it a safe area for people of all types.
That area used to be somewhat dangerous, with lots of gang activity. Gays were attacked routinely. There were gay patrols to ensure safety. It also was ground zero for community support during the AIDS crisis.
They worked with local police to educate police officers about gay issues and hate crimes.
The 'boys' made that area through blood, sweat and tears. Literally. What did trans do? And besides, what are trans doing in gay bars? Don't they want to pass as straight?

by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 10, 2020 3:42 PM |
R36 - say what? When was it ever called Newtown? I'm calling bullshit on that. Gentrification is a slow process. Gays slowly moved up the north side and settled in East Lakeview in very late 70's / early 80's.
So NOW people have a problem with the nickname after 40 years?
Seriously, it's like they sit down and say - ok, what can we change / attack next?

Something that has occurred to me is that the Trans Movement has been as successful as it is because it feels familiar to people. The generational lessons learned and passed down from gay white men have been redirected and are now being focused in service of a microcosm of the community.
Kind of like The Lincoln Project is successful because it is (fractional) Republicans attacking Republicans.

R39, here's one article referencing when it was called Newtown. If you google, you can probably find 20.
In the 1970s and ’80s, the area was known as New Town, a moniker that reportedly came from the migration of gays and lesbians, young hipsters and counterculture groups from the Old Town neighborhood a couple of miles to the south.
In addition to encompassing the modern Boystown, New Town also extended south to include the area around Diversey Parkway, Clark Street and Broadway, which was itself once the epicenter of Chicago’s gay community and remains on the route of the Gay Pride Parade.
Boystown became the nation’s first official gay community in 1997.

Boystown was nice about 15-20 years ago when it had a mixture of shops and bars.
But it started to be an area where a lot of straight families with strollers moved in, so suddenly, OMG we can't have shirtless men or dildos in the window any longer!
A lot of the bars have seen better days and some of the more fun shops along the way have closed.
Then the community center opened on the north end of Boystown, and all THAT did was bring a few hundred young black kids from the South Side, some trans, all with a huge leap in crimes, because in the neighborhoods they grew up in, everyone steals, everyone mugs and everyone solves a dispute with a fight.
It's unbearably sad what's been done to a once glorious neighborhood.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | July 10, 2020 7:31 PM |
I was in college from 2005-2010 and Boystown had a vibe that was a mix of the old Wicker Park and Lincoln Park combined. Yuppyish but still gritty and if you weren't wealthy, you could still afford to live there. I had college friends who lived in nice studios at the time. I don't think that would be possible now. Boystown sucks now, probably no different from Chelsea. It's mainly white gay yuppy heaven.

r80 I'm there all the time and haven't experienced this crime. A few times there are groups that look like they could throw hands, but anywhere in Chicago can feel less than safe after sundown. Boystown is still a white haven with enough segregation to satisfy your rose-colored vision of the demographics in a good gayborhood.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | July 10, 2020 8:25 PM |
That reminds me r81, I missed out on the old Wrigleyville drunk (possibly hot) fratboy era. I got to see the madness at the old Taco Bell, but by the time I arrived even Wrigleyville was sanitized compared to the stories I had heard. I guess Boystown was also cleaned up in a similar fashion.

r92 I have noticed that a lot of straight people live around Boystown. Unless you're renting above one of the bars, it ain't cheap. But the gays still congregate there every day and night so too me it's maintained it gayborhood feel. When I'm out, especially at the Side Track/Roscoe/Progress intersection, it always seems like 80% gays and lesbians with a few straight friends.
I simply love the fact that straight people are cool with visiting Boystown and we aren't freaks or some hidden tabu. That said, it appears that Trans are the ones leading the March to change the name.
Anyone else that wasn't to share their anecdotes about Boystown are more than welcome welcome. I hate that I'm 10-15 years late to the party.

R92 - it is still the center of gay night life. Huge Pride Center. And Halsted Days. And where the Pride parade goes through. Just because straights moved in and some gays can't afford to live there anymore doesn't make it less of a gay neighborhood or the center of gay life.
Gay men are the customers and lifeblood of the bars, nightlife and many of the restaurants in that area. Trans are not pumping in the dollars to support these businesses. Neither are lesbians.
Lesbian bars died because of lesbians not going there enough to keep the revenue up. It's not gay men's fault.
While it may suck to not be the majority, that's just the way it is. Gay men and lesbians had to start their own organizations and have their own spaces.
Trans want to invade gay spaces and use the gay community's money and resources to elevate themselves. They label gay men (particularly white gay men) as these oppressors because they are the majority of customers and faces that they see.
That's fucking life. If you don't have the numbers or resources to create spaces of your own, stop bullying your way into other people's places.

[quote] I simply love the fact that straight people are cool with visiting Boystown and we aren't freaks or some hidden tabu. That said, it appears that Trans are the ones leading the March to change the name.
So, the straights who pushed the gays out of their own neighborhood get a free pass, because they generously allow us to have a few drinks there, but the Trannies are the real baddies for apparently trying to make it official that it's no longer an actual gayborhood? For real?

R97 sounds like he doesn't have any reasoning ability. You need to either go back to school or ask for a refund R97.
The straights moved in after we made it nice - but they don't own the bars or the pride events or anything else. They only liked the atmosphere and priced a lot of gays out.
Trans - well, have done what exactly for the gay community? And they want to shame people for naming an area for gay men just because they are gay men.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | July 11, 2020 7:10 AM |
Start your own neighborhood, Ts. You were successful enough starting your own movement. Stop parasiting.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | July 11, 2020 7:16 AM |
r97, people that don't own shit (lifetime renters) will rarely have a leg to stand on when it comes to the outcomes of their residence. If you own a property then the likely hood of being "pushed out" is drastically reduced. I know many gay men that can easily afford to live in Boystown, but chose some of the other great neighborhoods in Chicago. You will still see them in Boystown at least once a week. Chicago has become more gay friendly since the Bush-era so the idea of confining gays to one neighborhood seems rather foolish unless people want to live there. Boystown is still unmistakably gay.
Different generations have different expectations for their gay communities. The acceptance of gays by Millennials and now Gen-Z can not be ignored as gay ghettos transition from safe harbors to simply social gathering spots. I find it funny that the older generations that fought for equality are shocked when their successful campaign ended up breaking down some of the segregation between gays and straights. Isn't that what you wanted?
On the flip side, gay couples can openly attend straight bars and clubs with minimal issues in trendy parts of the city. We've blended into each other's spaces and it's a better more honest way to live.

At the heart of gay and lesbian movement is the idea that there is nothing wrong with us and that we do not need to change to be complete and healthy individuals.
At the heart of the trans movement is the idea that there is something wrong with them and that they need to change to be complete and healthy.
In the process of changing themselves, they want everyone else to change along with them. Being something you are not never ends well. Trying to force people to change (e.g. trans women are full women despite biology) also does not work.
Polar opposite belief sets.

R114 I wish I could give multiple WW’s. You properly explained the core differences.
Gays don’t need to change themselves or others to live their lives. They only want peace and acceptance.
Trannys don’t like themselves and want to change their physical appearance in an effort to calm the severe mental illness ravaging them. This also means that they must attempt to change and control others as well.
One is not like the other.

r115 the same thing can be said about people trying to remove statues and rename bases. Boystown is really rather dated. Changing the name won't erase history any more than changing the name of a military base changes history. Come on, folks!
Would I prefer that the name remains Boystown? Yes, but sensibilities evolve with time. This is small potatoes.

We call it Goystown.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | July 11, 2020 10:42 PM |
r121 what are you talking about? I'm black and have been welcomed in Boystown. This isn't Phillidelpbia's "no-blacks" gayborhood. Boystown literately has bars to cater to white, black or Latino tastes. Then there are bars with a more even mix, but white people are the majority so you may see more of them. But everyone is welcome in every Boystown venue, based on y friends' group experiences.
Only people that have issues are those looking to cause trouble, but with SO many cops posted outside of the bars and managing door security, I've never felt in danger. Even if I had a problem there is typically a cop a block or two away. Boystown is awesome! The cops are very gay friendly and you would get to know them by face and name if you frequent the big venues.

Accurate. Oh, there are a few people here and there who have begun to recognize this lunacy for what it is. But, it is too little and much too late. Plus, there are too many gay men who will want to prove to everyone — themselves included — that they are the wokest of the woke and they will be happy to give away everything to demonstrate that.
Gay men have already been erased from our own history by those who happily abandoned facts and evidence to declare that Johnson and Rivera were trans and they singlehandedly started the Stonewall Riots. The revisionist history crowd repeats this falsehood constantly, and as a result it has become accepted by anyone who doesn’t critically question if it is even remotely accurate, which it is not.
So yes, any references — even oblique ones — that are not thoroughly, completely, and undeniably inclusive of every segment of the community will be slowly erased. Well, unless they reference the trans/queer crowd. Those, though hardly inclusive, will be permitted, welcomed, and even celebrated.
Welcome to the new overpersons.

LGB needs to break with the T internationally and *now*, while there's still time to undo some of the damage they've forced into law. They are a small group of crazy people with the financial backing of autogynephilic billionaire bio-medicalists and lawyers. They have been putting their dream vision of the future, which has no gay people or real women in it, into place in the late 70s. They have overtaken all the major and many minor gay rights organisations and are undoing every single advancement we have made since the 1950s. This is not a joke.

I want to know how many of the 1100 signatures are from people actually in Chicago. Sounds like the trans brigade from everywhere came to sign.
I also want to know what exactly a 'safe space' is supposed to be and how everyone is supposed to act.
It's all word soup and non-specific criticisms and objections designed to make people feel guilty and the accusers to be the oppressed.
They can't say what it is - it's just a feeling. We need specifics. And no, you can not force businesses to have trans nights or divide up venues according to your identities. These aren't shared resources like college classrooms. Businesses are in business to make money and support themselves. That's it. You don't like it? Start your own.

by Anonymous | reply 155 | July 12, 2020 3:09 AM |
Just for clarification, can someone briefly rehash what the issue is with the name "Boystown" and who exactly has the problem with the name? There's some petition that's been signed by a bunch of trannies to change the name because they don't like the use of the word "boy"? Or is it lesbians who feel the name excludes females? I am legitimately confused.
And correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the area actually kind of started by gay men, or at least in large part by them? So doesn't the name fit? It'd be like non-Christians demanding the names San Francisco, San Diego or St. Paul changed because they inherently exclude non-Christian religions. Or wanting Charlottesville changed because it's female.
To those claiming the use of the term boy is weird or off-putting, I'd assert that its primarily a colloquialism, like when a group of men or woman describe their evening together without spouses as a boys' night out or girls' night out. People are reading way to much into this freaking name.

The announcement follows an online survey by the Northalsted Business Alliance, answered by 7,900 people.
Of those survey-takers, 58% favored keeping the Boystown moniker and 20% said they felt unwelcomed by the Boystown name, according to Northalsted Business Alliance spokesperson Jen Gordon.
The Northalsted Business Alliance began the survey in the wake of a Change.org petition calling for a name change that now has 1,500 signatures.
The petition says that “systemic transphobia, racism, and sexism have plagued our neighborhood for decades, and it begins at the top, with the all-male board of the Northalsted Business Alliance. It begins with the BOYSTOWN signs down our street announcing that this neighborhood is ‘for the boys.’”
The petition came at a time when Boystown’s power structure was increasingly under fire from transgender people of color: Speakers at the Drag March for Change, which drew thousands of Black Lives Matter protesters in June, complained that they were denied jobs or steady work at nightclubs and bars because they were Black.

20% felt 'unwelcomed' by the name. Ok - what the fuck does that mean?
So a name change to "The Proudest Neighborhood" - whatever the fuck that means - is going to make you feel more welcomed in a neighborhood where you're going to see 85% gay men out at night?
Guess what - it's a gay male neighborhood and it is the majority - by far. If you think it's going to become trans-oriented or a hug-fest for non-binary, then you're dreaming. Start your own stuff - but no, they want the attention and spotlight on them because, y'know, so special and brave.
