I went to my first Covid Era Funeral Service on Saturday for a close relative, with limited guests. Masks and social distancing mandatory. The Funeral Home had 4 employees at the door, taking temps, offering sanitizer, providing masks for those who came without them. An adjacent room was opened up, and chairs were spaced according to guidelines. Anyone signing the guest book was asked to use a clean pen from the holder, and immediately put it in the basket provided. Unfortunately, upon entering the room where the service was held, about 70% of the attendees removing their masks, and were rearranging seating. My sister and I sat all the way in the back, as far as possible away from everyone. Unbelievable that the funeral home's well thought out plans to keep everyone safe were tossed out by some of my not so bright relatives.

Headed for another lockdown in Texas. It really seems unavoidable now - hospital capacity is getting tight and we are on a steep upward trend in cases. Basically NY in early April. Abbot is slowly sliding and will have to accept the inevitable. Doctors in Houston are saying it has to start by end of this week - or we are looking at a disaster in July. Simple masks aren’t enough to stop it now. Abbott is trying to please the crazy conservatives - and avoid a hospital overwhelm disaster. Impossible - he is screwed now - as is Texas.

Guardian-The death toll from the coronavirus in Latin America is expected to skyrocket to nearly 390,000 by October, with Brazil and Mexico seen accounting for two-thirds of fatalities as other nations in the region contain their outbreaks, the University of Washington said on Wednesday.

Guardian-The pilots of a plane that crashed last month in Pakistan, killing 98 people, were pre-occupied by the coronavirus crisis and tried to land with the aircraft’s wheels still up, according to initial official reports. The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane crashed into a crowded residential area on 22 May after both engines failed as it approached Karachi airport for a second landing attempt, killing all but two people on board, and a child on the ground. The preliminary report outlines the flight’s chaotic final minutes and a bizarre series of errors compounded by communication failures with air traffic control.Investigators found the plane was at more than twice the correct altitude when it first approached the runway, and the tower advised the pilots to circle for a more gradual descent, the report states. But, instead of going around, the pilots attempted to land anyway – even though they had raised the landing gear. Air traffic control saw the Airbus A320’s engines scrape the runway with a shower of sparks, but did not tell the cockpit. The badly damaged engines failed as the plane turned to attempt a second landing. Pakistan’s aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan told parliament the pilots had been discussing the coronavirus as they attempted to land and had disengaged the craft’s autopilot.

Seeing that story at R41 about the surprise party and the news about cases rising again is making me nervous as hell. I'm a college professor, and our university announced last week that we are definitely returning to campus and face-to-face classes in the fall. We are assured that everything will be OK because students will be asked to wear masks all the time and will be told not to engage in any socializing, partying, etc. Yeah, right. When millions of college students descend on college campuses across the country in the fall, all hell will break loose.

BBC-Officials in states across the US have reacted with alarm to the Trump administration’s plan to end federal support for some Covid-19 testing sites, warning it could cause further spread of a disease that is already surging back and calling the move “irresponsible”. The White House confirmed on Wednesday it will no longer fund 13 testing sites, including seven in Texas, despite that state reporting record highs in the number of coronavirus cases.Funding and support for the sites will end this month, even as Covid-19 cases increase across the US. The sites are in Texas, Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Colorado.

Yes R59....and in a roundabout way that could be seen as a good thing. My interpretation is that if the infection rate has been 10x higher than measured/reported and the deaths are what they are (I understand that there may be under-reporting here also), it means the calculated mortality rate is lower than rates previously publicized. That's a good thing to know if # of cases continues to climb significantly. It also means millions have already had the virus and gotten past it at least for now. I know that doesn't prove anything regarding the future, but it feels like a positive to me so I'm going with that.
My theory still is that this virus has been here in the US since at least late fall 2019. It just wasn't "known" yet. I think I posted that in an early thread and of course people accused me of being a "right wing troll". Whatever.
For now I just keep working from home and live mostly the same way I have been since March.

Amid America's #COVID19 disaster, I must come clean about a lie I spread as a health insurance exec: We spent big $$ to push the idea that Canada's single-payer system was awful & the U.S. system much better. It was a lie & the nations' COVID responses prove it.
The truth: Canada's doing much better than the U.S. when it comes to #COVID19 testing & treatment. On a per capita basis, more Canadians are being tested & fewer getting sick & dying. This may shock Americans who still believe the lies I told about the Canadian health care system.
Here’s the truth: Our industry PR & lobbying group, AHIP, supplied my colleagues & me with cherry-picked data & anecdotes to make people think Canadians wait endlessly for their care. It’s a lie & I’ll always regret the disservice I did to folks on both sides of the border

Just FYI for those worried about reports of antibodies lessening quickly or disappearing over time, there is more to the immune system than antibodies. There are T cells, killer T cells, and memory T cells. These work a bit as guardians. While there are no active antibodies, these cells float around, ready to quickly reignite the immune response, including antibody formation, when/if they re-encounter the virus in the future.

I am constantly irritated at the local health department allowing lies on their website, Trumpsters saying this is just the flu and lying about the infected and death rates, falsely claiming they're "board certified doctors" and telling everyone "you don't need to wear a mask because it's not dangerous."
We have people who have lost relatives to covid on the health department board and they're being stalked and harassed by Trumpsters who are trying to get them to deny the deaths happened.

Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix, is recording as many as 2,000 cases a day, “eclipsing the New York City boroughs even on their worst days,” disease trackers said. “Arizona has lost control of the epidemic.”

Arizona is facing more per capita cases than recorded by any country in Europe or even by hard-hit Brazil. Among states with at least 20 people hospitalized for covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, no state has seen its rate of hospitalizations increase more rapidly since Memorial Day.
This week, Arizona reported not just a record single-day increase in new cases — with Tuesday’s tally reaching 3,591 — but also record use of inpatient beds and ventilators for suspected and confirmed cases. Public health experts warn that hospitals could be stretched so thin they may have to begin triaging patients by mid-July.

Guardian-Republican Florida governor Ron DeSantis’s faltering response to soaring new coronavirus numbers in his state is descending into acrimony, after an accusation his administration is “cooking the books” in an effort to hide the true impact of the devastating pandemic....Rebekah Jones, who says she was fired from her job in charge of the state’s official Covid-19 database in May for refusing to manipulate its figures, claimed on social media to have evidence that employees at Florida’s department of health “have been instructed this week to change the numbers and begin slowly deleting deaths and cases so it looks like Florida is improving next week in the lead-up to July 4, like they’ve ‘made it over the hump’.” “They’re only reporting all these cases now so they can restrict reporting next week to make everyone think it’s over,” she said.

I don't understand Arizona at all. Even if every single person there is a no-mask wearing, blithering idiot, what about the low population density? How is that not helping? No one in AZ takes public transit, etc. What the fuck are those cunts doing out there?
Meanwhile, my partner almost gave me a heart attack this morning because he had to go to the ER. He has really bad varicose veins in his legs, and they hurt most of the time. He's been told that sooner or later he'll need surgery to have them removed or corrected, but in the meantime just monitor them and if there's any changes to have it checked in case he develops a blood clot. The pain had moved a bit today, so off he went to the ER in two layers of masks, gloves, and safety goggles. (They said he does have a clot, but it's so superficial that it isn't life-threatening, but he will need to get to a vascular specialist for follow up.)
Not sure how worried I should be about his picking up COVID in the ER. He said there was no line and everything was being kept scrupulously safe, but still....
I don't know how you people who have Dr. appointments all the time cope. I think I'd be trying to cauterize my own wounds at home and shit.

Interesting analysis from JP Morgan:
"Looking across categories of card spending, we find that the level of spending in restaurants three weeks ago was the strongest predictor of the rise in new virus cases over the subsequent three weeks.
We also find that higher spending in supermarkets predicts slower spread of the virus, hinting that high levels of supermarket spending are indicative of more careful social distancing in a state."
Why are these spikes happening? The answer is not completely clear, but what unites some of the most troublesome states is the all-or-nothing approach they took to pandemic suppression. The stay-at-home order in Texas, for instance, lifted on April 30. A day later, the state allowed nearly all of its businesses and public spaces—stores, malls, churches, restaurants, and movie theaters—to open with limited capacity. It has since further loosened those restrictions. Arizona allowed some stores and businesses to reopen in early May; it lifted its stay-at-home order on May 15 and allowed bars, gyms, churches, malls, and movie theaters to reopen around the same time. And while the state mandated some form of capacity restrictions, those rules were regularly breached: For weeks, photos and videos have shown scenes of crowded Arizona bars and nightclubs.
A form of wishful thinking seemed to drive these decisions: If the virus could be ignored, then it might go away altogether. Even though polls show that most Republicans wear masks, the Republican leaders of Texas and Arizona catered to the party’s anti-mask fringe and waffled on their importance. When the government of Harris County, Texas—which includes Houston, the country’s fourth-largest city—mandated that residents wear masks in public or risk a $1,000 fine, the state government blocked the rule. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick called a face-mask mandate “the ultimate government overreach,” and Representative Dan Crenshaw said it could lead to “unjust tyranny.”
Eventually, Governor Greg Abbott of Texas and Governor Doug Ducey* of Arizona went even further, blocking cities and counties from implementing any pandemic-related restriction more stringent than that required by the state. This meant that when a video emerged of packed nightclubs in Phoenix, full of people who were not wearing masks, the mayor was unable to close or sanction the clubs—or even require them to force patrons to wear masks.

Illegal raves take off across Europe as lockdowns ease
LONDON/LISBON – From the housing blocks of London to the beaches of Portugal, thousands of young people are holding illegal raves and parties across Europe, yearning for contact and bursting with energy after the solitude of the coronavirus lockdown.
While many revelers are simply seeking some fun after months of bans on festivals, clubbing and parties, such mass gatherings have added to fears that a second deadly wave of infections could sweep across Europe.
Police have sometimes struggled to disperse the illegal parties with clashes in London where crowds attacked officers with bottles and set upon patrol cars on Wednesday, leaving 22 police injured.
“We’ve seen large numbers of people completely flouting the health regulations, seeming not to care at all about their own or their families’ health, wanting to have large parties,” London police chief Cressida Dick said.
“It’s hot, some people have drunk far too much, some people are just angry and aggressive and some are just plain violent.”
Police in the British capital dispersed several parties overnight. They are also investigating rape, drug offenses and stabbings at illegal raves in other cities.
As the exuberance of greater freedom explodes into the European summer after the gloom of the lockdown, parties have also popped up in Germany and France and on the sands of Portugal’s Atlantic beaches.
Thousands gathered in the squares of Portugal’s cities of Porto and Braga over the weekend to party in the summer heat.
“Join us on this magical journey in the forest,” read one message circulating on social media about a gathering on a hidden beach west of Lisbon. “Let’s get together and share some loving, vibes and music.”
In Berlin, a city famous for its nightlife from clubs to outdoor raves, several hundred people have gathered outside at Hasenheide Park in recent weeks to dance into the night.
“I think people are just longing to socially connect,” Berlin-based DJ Elias Doré said, saying that thousands of young people would normally be dancing under the open skies of European festivals this summer.
Still, events have not always ended peacefully.
On Sunday, French police clashed with festival-goers in Paris and the western city of Nantes as music lovers celebrated the annual “Fete de la Musique” on the longest day of the year.
Six police officers were pelted with bottles at a gathering of around 500 people in Berlin’s Gleisdreieck Park last weekend, as some resisted the party being broken up.
And a street party in Manchester last weekend attended by around 2,000 people turned violent, with a social media video showing three men and a woman wielding bladed weapons and reports of two men being stabbed.
London police chief Dick said residents had been terrified by some parties. “We will be prepared this weekend,” she said.
Authorities are also concerned that young people who often have lighter symptoms or are asymptomatic could be contracting and spreading the virus without realizing it.
And with thousands of anonymous attendees coming in and out of events, proper testing and tracing to prove whether contagion is happening will be virtually impossible, according to Dr. Celso Cunha, a virologist at the University of Lisbon.
“Even if they don’t usually get as ill, young people still transmit the virus,” he said. But with most clubs and festivals still shuttered, there is still nowhere for most of Europe’s revelers to dance, drink and find love after the rigors of lockdown. “I think whatever authorities do, the summer will see many secret and illegal raves everywhere,” Dore said.
Florida is hiding deaths and hospitalizations. Now, they are planning to lie about new cases, next week - so a lot of people will come out for the 4th of July weekend...
Yes. [bold]Florida's death counts are misleading b/c the Governor has restricted assigning COVID as cause of death. [/bold] Only people dying in a hospital with an attending physician who signs the death certificate can receive a COVID as the cause of death on their certificate. Anyone else gets whatever organ failure or secondary infection was the immediate cause of death.
[bold]Hospitalization is misleading b/c an ICU bed is not considered occupied unless the patient is receiving intensive care.[/bold] Not sure what that means in practice. I imagine there is a list of ICU procedures that are no longer considered intensive care, even if the patient is in the ICU.
Situation is very bad in Miami, where the mayor has assigned "surge teams" to go door-to-door to find COVID cases in Little Havana and Homestead. They want to quarantine infectious people and they are afraid of suddenly finding corpses in apts where only one person lives.
In my Broward neighborhood - people have volunteered to do wellness checks and pet fostering. There are over 1000 cases in my zip code alone.
More troubling are Hillsborough (Tampa) and Orange (Orlando) counties. The virus is spreading like wildfire in those areas. That's the I-4 corridor, lots of stupid "Florida man" types live there.

I don't know why they can't or won't say that the protests, as well as the protests acting as a catalyst to break the rules highly attributed to the spikes, especially in LA which is going through the roof. You can't have it both ways - keep people in, doctors posting long IG/youtube videos about staying home to protect them & then see MD's on their scrubs stating "Doctors for BLM". I'd just love a shred of honesty like, "the protests were needed and some things are worth dying for" or "no matter what the injustice is, breaking social distancing laws/regulations will prolong the pandemic and just like everything else, your protests will have to be virtual". I feel like after 3 months of all of us in blue states/cities being really good, all that work was for naught. In LA we are back to or getting worse than square one at the beginning. I get annoyed b/c it feels like just when things feel like they might get back to whatever our new existence is, things get worse. And why impose regulations if you don't enforce them? It's so stupid. The virus should have simmered down by now. Wuhan of all places is back to normal-ish. We should be in the healing zone now instead of going back up. It's been really since March 17th that the country shut down.

I don't think the protests did cause a massive uptick in infection. The protests were also in a bunch of states that are still going down and have things at least somewhat under control. A lot of the protestors were wearing masks and the protestors were outside. There is a huge difference between outdoor transmission and indoor transmission. An outdoor protest with 80% of the people wearing masks is tons safer than one idiot-filled indoor Trump rally.
I think these red states have been in trouble for a long, long time. Everyone was so focused on New York, that they didn't get the scrutiny that they should have on a daily basis so these states were able to lie and fuck with their numbers at will. Now, the focus is on them and the numbers are so out of control, they can't hide them anymore. Look at the 4000+ extra "pneumonia" deaths in the first five months of the year for Florida. That's all you need to know about the history of Covid in Florida and the other states that are exploding now. They've been exploding for a long time. They just can't hide anymore.

Researchers exploring the interaction between the coronavirus and its hosts have discovered that when the SARS-CoV-2 virus infects a human cell, it sets off a ghoulish transformation. Obeying instructions from the virus, the newly infected cell sprouts multi-pronged tentacles studded with viral particles.
These disfigured zombie cells appear to be using those streaming filaments, or filopodia, to reach still-healthy neighboring cells. The protuberances appear to bore into the cells’ bodies and inject their viral venom directly into those cells’ genetic command centers — thus creating another zombie.
The authors of the new study, an international team led by researchers at UC San Francisco, say the coronavirus appears to be using these newly sprouted dendrites to boost its efficiency in capturing new cells and establishing infection in its human victims.

A Horrifying U.S. Covid Curve Has a Simple Explanation.
A growing gap in case growth between Europe and the U.S. tells the tale: Declaring victory too soon is an excellent way to return to new heights.
One particular difference stands out between the American and European approaches. Many states were happy to reopen after simply "bending the curve" — that is, slowing upward growth and ensuring spare hospital capacity. These states went on to expand economic activity at an elevated plateau with lots of ongoing transmissions. In contrast, European countries mostly waited to reopen until they crushed the curve or reached its far slope, with substantially lower incidence or dramatic reductions in the viral spread. It's not the only explanation for a growing gap, but it's a compelling one.

Co-founder of "ReOpen Maryland" gets Covid, won't comply with contract tracing efforts.
Tim Walters, a two-time Republican candidate for the General Assembly from Linthicum, said in a series of Facebook videos starting Tuesday that he has come down with COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.
Walters helped organize ReOpen Maryland protests in Annapolis, on the Eastern Shore and elsewhere in Maryland to challenge state and local measures put in place by Gov. Larry Hogan to slow the spread of the virus.
Walters urged people who have come in contact with him in the past two weeks to pay attention to the symptoms he described but he said he would not provide any information to public health officials trying to trace the spread of the disease.

AntiTax Republican governors (like Fat Abbot) rushed to reopen for a simple reason.
If deaths spike, they hope voters will blame it on partiers, protestors, bar patrons and businesses who didn’t properly implement reopening orders.
On the other hand, if they kept things closed until infections subsided, more people would live, but the state would need to pay unemployment benefits. Benefits from the coffers Republicans drained because they don’t believe in collecting taxes.
Abbot knows voters will hold him [italic] directly [/italic] responsible if their unemployment checks bounce.

With these new spikes in cases and shutdowns, I wonder how much longer the federal government can afford these trillion dollar bailouts, unemployment benefits for millions of people, stimulus cheques etc. Will they just print more money and add zeroes till the hyperinflation gets out of control? How many decades and generations will it take to pay back this gigantic debt? The spending and national debt was already out of control before Corona and now they just add package after package. Will the Dems finally hold Mnuchin, Plump and his corrupt family and conies accountable before they approve the next trillion dollar company bailouts? Will they let Mnuchin and Barr just continue their open corruption? Let Trump fire every Inspector General in the adminstration or everyone who will hold them accountable? The budget is the only real weapon they have left, but the Dems just approve package after package and do nothing to stop these corrupt grifters.

When I went to the grocery store a few days ago (I'm in Pennsylvania), two of the store employees had their masks pulled down to their chins -- mouth and nose exposed. If the store employees won't follow the rules, there's no hope. I've also seen no efforts to enforce the mask policy -- lots of customers walking around the store without a mask, and no one is trying to stop them. Also, no one is obeying the 6-foot tape markings at the checkout aisles.

R253, the masks are for when you cannot stay 6 ft away from other people. I wear mine all the time when I'm going in anywhere but the requirement is to where them when you can't socially distance. As for any virus they might be shedding onto surfaces, you'll just have to wash your hands and the items if that's the case. People are not going to stand in an empty store with their masks on 100% of the time. I think you should consider yourself lucky they put the masks on when you came in and you don't live in Idiotville, aka the American South.

NY student sparks COVID-19 cluster after returning from Florida
Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Saturday called on state investigators to probe a COVID-19 cluster in Westchester, believed to be caused by a student who returned from coronavirus hotspot Florida — and then attended a graduation ceremony in posh Chappaqua.
The unidentified student began showing symptoms after the June 20 “drive in” ceremony at the Chappaqua train station for graduating seniors at Horace Greeley High School, Cuomo said.
Since then, four others in attendance have tested positive for COVID-19, he added.
“New Yorkers have controlled the spread of this unprecedented virus by being smart and disciplined, and our progress to date is illustrated by the current low numbers of new cases and hospitalizations,” Cuomo said.
“But as we are seeing in other states who reopened quickly, the pandemic is far from over and we need (to) stay vigilant. We’re prepared to do the aggressive testing and contact tracing required to slow and ultimately control any potential clusters of new cases like the one in Westchester County.”
The infected student also participated in a non-school related “Field Night” event the same day along with juniors and seniors and students from surrounding school districts, Cuomo said.
Those who attended the ceremony or other graduation events, which continued into June 21, were told to quarantine until July 5.

Derek Thompson (writer at The Atlantic)on Twitter:
In the US, new COVID cases have spiked to all-time highs, but deaths have not. Why?
Well, there's a lag between confirmed cases and deaths, we're testing more, and the new cases seem to be younger.
But it's also possible that this is partly about better hospital outcomes.
Reasons why this might be happening:
- Better understanding of disease
- Improved patient management of systems
- More targeted treatments, esp for hyper-inflammation and microvascular thrombosis
- Declines in pollution following lockdown
- Small possibility of viral mutation

There is some theory about social networks that determined that most people will not be careful about COVID until it affects a member of their extended social group - either a death or a hospitalization w/complications. [bold]Yet, in my case, I just see COVID changing behavior[/bold]
If I drive around, I see ambulances heading to Holy Cross. If I go to Walgreens, I see Mucinex right next to the register and its shelf is almost bare. The pharmacy - stay away. Some frightening sick people there - very disoriented, unbalanced, loud, and aggressive, yelling for scripts.
We lose our cat. She shows up in another part of the neighborhood. Through NextDoor I contact the person, who I do not know. Before I can go over, she advises us to wear masks and not come closer than the outdoor mailbox. With hands outstretched, we exchange possession of the cat.
People talk about taking precautions and trying to get through the day in high-pitched strained voices. In parking lots, I see people furiously scrubbing themselves with sanitizer before entering their cars.
Regardless of the doctored reports people know. The reports are doubling troubling. One - because they show increasing numbers of cases; two - because the local papers cover the undercounting.
OTOH - [bold]I have only seen “good Karens:” women who police mask-wearing and social distancing. They appear to be self-appointed.[/bold]

No mask mandate at July GOP (state) convention leaves Houston hospitality workers uneasy
The Texas Republican Convention remains on track to take place in downtown Houston next month, and the state party is not planning to impose a mask requirement on attendees, despite a recent surge in local COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.
On a call with party members earlier this week, Texas GOP chairman James Dickey said he does not interpret Harris County’s mask order to cover the convention, which is set to take place July 16-18 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The mandate compels businesses to require their customers to wear face masks.
Assistant Harris County Attorney Robert Soard said his office is reviewing the matter. The mask order is set to expire at the end of June, though County Judge Lina Hidalgo has hinted that she intends to extend it.
Hidalgo on Friday moved the county to the highest threat level on a COVID-19 scale that she unveiled earlier this month and called for a return to stay-at-home conditions.

Not really, R105. The T-cells of which R97 spoke are the trigger for the 'Cytokine Release Syndrome' which some Covid-19 patients experience, especially the young, who often have multiple organ failures as a result. It's one of the more lethal aspects of coronavirus infection.
Fortunately, it has recently been discovered that the symptoms of "multisystem inflamatory syndrome" in children ran be reduced by a transfusion of blood plasma containing antibodies which reduce the patient's overreaction to Covid-19.
There were lots of deaths, though, before they discovered this.

R306 Yeah. I was one of the group of people posting warnings about this virus as far back as January. I would have liked nothing better than to have been proven wrong. Also back then my short term survival instincts kicked in and a stocked up on lots of things. Thankfully I live in a country with a very low level of people infected by the virus and a Government that has acted well in response. However, for the life of me I cannot fathom what is going to happen long term, not only health wise but economically so I've taken a day to day approach. The world is fucked but I don't think most people can even comprehend the mess we are in.

Because a significant portion of the American people and their leaders are just plain stupid, technology is the only thing that will save us. Dr. Scott Gottlieb:
2020 will be a hard year but then we'll more fully vanquish Covid with our technology. It will recede into a more manageable threat. A vaccine is probably an early 2021 event based on publicly available data. But don’t lose sight of therapeutic antibodies. They should be available this fall and could be produced at scale by the end of the year. There’s a lot of technology in development in addition to vaccines
The question is, how many lives will be unnecessarily lost before then, because too many people eschew masks, social distancing and scientific reasonining?

PBS Newshour talks the status of a vaccine for Covid-19
Vaccine developers are going to start manufacturing millions of doses of the vaccine during the phase three trial so they will be (somewhat) ready for distribution if the phase three trial is successful. If the trial fails, those millions of doses will be thrown out. It's expensive to do this advanced manufacturing before they know they have a winner, but WE ARE IN A PANDEMIC.
Best case scenario, we MIGHT have a vaccine by the end of the year, but only a few million doses would be available and will be given to the most at risk. The hundreds of million doses needed in America would then be available sometime all throughout 2021. This sped-up timeline would be possible only if some vaccine proves efficacious against the virus and safe for humans.

Yes, I've noticed this, too. They use the phrase "face covering" but never the word "mask." CNN: Dr. Anthony Fauci says he would “settle” for a Covid-19 vaccine that’s 70% to 75% effective, but that this incomplete protection, coupled with the fact that many Americans say they won’t get a coronavirus vaccine, makes it “unlikely” that the US will achieve sufficient levels of immunity to quell the outbreak.
Fauci noted that “there is a general anti-science, anti-authority, anti-vaccine feeling among some people in this country — an alarmingly large percentage of people, relatively speaking.”
“The best we’ve ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98 percent effective,” said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “That would be wonderful if we get there. I don’t think we will. I would settle for [a] 70, 75% effective vaccine.”

Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom told CNBC on Monday the coronavirus tracking website he helped build is showing concerning levels of spread in many states across the U.S.
Systrom said that 34 states in the U.S. have an estimated rate of coronavirus transmission above 1.0, defined on rt.live as an indication the virus will spread quickly. A value less 1.0 suggests the spread will stop.
“So you have an incredible rebound,” said Systrom. “People like to say we’re not in a second wave. I don’t know what a second wave [is] if that’s not a second wave.”

CanSino's COVID-19 vaccine candidate approved for military use in China
BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s military has received the greenlight to use a COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by its research unit and CanSino Biologics (6185.HK) after clinical trials proved it was safe and showed some efficacy, the company said on Monday.
The Ad5-nCoV is one of China’s eight vaccine candidates approved for human trials at home and abroad for the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus. The shot also won approval for human testing in Canada.
China’s Central Military Commission approved the use of the vaccine by the military on June 25 for a period of one year, CanSino said in a filing. The vaccine candidate was developed jointly by CanSino and a research institute at the Academy of Military Science (AMS).
“The Ad5-nCoV is currently limited to military use only and its use cannot be expanded to a broader vaccination range without the approval of the Logistics Support Department,” CanSino said, referring to the Central Military Commission department which approved the military use of the vaccine.
CanSino declined to disclose whether the innoculation of the vaccine candidate is mandatory or optional, citing commercial secrets, in an email to Reuters.
The military approval follows China’s decision earlier this month to offer two other vaccine candidates to employees at state-owned firms travelling overseas.
The Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials of the CanSino’s vaccine candidate showed it has the potential to prevent diseases caused by the coronavirus, which has killed half a million people globally, but its commercial success cannot be guaranteed, the company said.
Separately, AMS received an approval earlier this month to test its second experimental coronavirus vaccine in humans.
No vaccine has yet been approved for commercial use against the illness caused by the new coronavirus, but over a dozen vaccines from more than 100 candidates globally are being tested in humans.

I doubt they'll ever admit it publicly though, and will probably just keep on blundering ahead. They've already blown $22 million on hotel rooms for students.

New Flu discovered in China with Pandemic Potential
A new strain of flu that has the potential to become a pandemic has been identified in China by scientists.
It emerged recently and is carried by pigs, but can infect humans, they say.
The researchers are concerned that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person, and trigger a global outbreak.
While it is not an immediate problem, they say, it has "all the hallmarks" of being highly adapted to infect humans and needs close monitoring.
As it's new, people could have little or no immunity to the virus
Prof Kin-Chow Chang, who works at Nottingham University in the UK, told the BBC: "Right now we are distracted with coronavirus and rightly so. But we must not lose sight of potentially dangerous new viruses."
While this new virus is not an immediate problem, he says: "We should not ignore it".

The coronavirus is spreading too rapidly and too broadly for the U.S. to get it under control as some other countries have, Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Monday.
“This is really the beginning,” Schuchat said of the U.S.’s recent surge in new cases. “I think there was a lot of wishful thinking around the country that, hey it’s summer. Everything’s going to be fine. We’re over this and we are not even beginning to be over this. There are a lot of worrisome factors about the last week or so.”

U.S. Coronavirus Testing Could Fail Again.
The United States is once again at risk of outstripping its COVID-19 testing capacity, an ominous development that would deny the country a crucial tool to understand its pandemic in real time.
The American testing supply chain is stretched to the limit, and the ongoing outbreak in the South and West could overwhelm it, according to epidemiologists and testing-company executives. While the country’s laboratories have added tremendous capacity in the past few months—the U.S. now tests about 550,000 people each day, a fivefold increase from early April—demand for viral tests is again outpacing supply.
If demand continues to accelerate and shortages are not resolved, then turnaround times for test results will rise, tests will effectively be rationed, and the number of infections that are never counted in official statistics will grow. Any plan to contain the virus will depend on fast and accurate testing, which can identify newly infectious people before they set off new outbreaks. Without it, the U.S. is in the dark.

Our friends are out of work, our parents and grandparents are dying, our medical system is collapsing without tests and vital supplies, our kids can’t go to school, and we can’t buy toilet paper. If this is winning, can we go back to losing the way we used to? And he says: No way. We’re going to keep winning, and I don’t care if you like it or not.

If I wasn't checking stats daily, I probably wouldn't be so aware, but over the course of the past week or two, the US has been very slow to update their numbers. Several hours pass with little or no activity, then suddenly there's a noticable surge. I'd like to really believe that our care and testing have vastly improved to the point that we truly do have a marked decline in Covid19 deaths, but considering the rapid rise in case numbers, it's hard to say whether or not the stats are acceptably accurate. Only time will tell.

BBC--Coronavirus: Czechs hold party to 'farewell' pandemic
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned this week that the pandemic was not even close to being over, but in the Czech Republic, a party has been held to give the coronavirus a "symbolic farewell".
Thousands of guests sat at a 500 metre-long (1640ft) table on the Charles Bridge in Prague on Tuesday sharing food and drinks they had brought from home.
Guests were encouraged to share with their neighbours and there was no social distancing, something people in countries under lockdown will find hard to relate to.
There have been fewer than 12,000 infections in the Czech Republic, a country of 10 million. About 350 people have died.
The event's organiser said the celebration was possible due to a lack of tourists in the famously charming city.
Ondrej Kobza, organiser of the party and owner of a cafe in the city, told the AFP news agency: "We want to celebrate the end of the coronavirus crisis by letting people meet and show they are not afraid to meet, that they are not afraid to take a piece of a sandwich from their neighbour."
One attendee, Galina Khomchenko-Krejcikova, said she found the event on Facebook and "thought it was interesting".
"I just finished a night shift so I didn't have time to prepare anything," she said. "But we brought some wine and snacks we found at home."
The Czech Republic was quick to enforce a lockdown and has managed to avoid the worst of the pandemic.
Last week, the government permitted public gatherings of up to 1,000 people. Swimming pools, museums, zoos and castles can now open without limits on the number of visitors.
Restaurants, bars and pubs have been allowed to serve people indoors for a month now.

Wild brawl erupts in Arkansas restaurant over social distancing dispute
The caught-on-camera fracas erupted Saturday inside the Saltgrass Steak House in Little Rock after a woman wearing a face mask confronted patrons who stood too close to her, according to bystanders.
Seth Crews, who recorded the violent incident on his cell phone, told KARK 4 News that he and his brother were having dinner at the eatery when they heard screaming coming from the bar area.
“All the restaurant employees were trying to help, they were just in shock like the rest of us,” Crews said.
A police report obtained by the news outlet says that a restaurant employee saw a woman wearing a face mask telling two others that they were sitting too close. That worker also claimed that the same woman purposely coughed on other customers.
Cellphone footage shows a woman seated at the bar area tell two men “you’re supposed to be six feet away from me,” before the melee exploded.
According to witnesses and the police report, a man seen in the video wearing a USA shirt then deliberately got even closer, escalating the sitatuion.
The boyfriend of the woman wearing the mask then apparently hit the man with a bottle before dozens of people wound up involved in the brawl, witnesses said.
“The guy came up and was touching on his back and giving him a little shove and he just wasn’t taking it and that’s when it all started,” Crews told the news outlet.
Nobody involved in the fight has filed any charges, according to KARK 4 News.

People from around the world need to stop thinking of America as one country. We are fucking huge and are more like 50 little countries or maybe 5 or 6 regions. The idiots and their moronic "leaders" are in certain (red) parts of the country while the responsible people and their actual leaders are in other (blue) parts of the country. Hell, even the single state of California is bigger than some countries and their state breaks down the same way into idiot and sane sections.
I just wish we could put up some border fences to keep the morons out of the sane parts.

No indoor dining in NYC for another 30 days.
ALBANY — New York restaurants may continue to sell cocktails and wine for takeout and delivery for at least another 30 days.
“We understand the positive impact this has had for businesses during this trying time, and we intend to renew this option in an upcoming executive order," Rich Azzopardi, senior adviser to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, told the Times Union on Thursday.
The measure, in place since March 17, the day after the mandated closure for in-house dining and bar service, expires Saturday, already having been renewed twice.
The takeout/delivery allowance, a suspension of a decades-old rule that restricts restaurants to serving cocktails and wine for on-premises consumption, provides a valuable additional income stream for an industry that has lost billions in revenue since mid-March, said Melissa Fleischut, president and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association.
"We're grateful the governor understands that continuing to allow to-go alcohol is important as restaurants start to reopen and make it through these challenging times," Fleischut said.
But, she cautioned, violations of the spirit of the allowance could threaten its continued renewal or result in suspension.
She said her messages to the industry is simple: "Please follow the rules and take the regulations very seriously."
Incidents across the state in recent weeks, with photos and videos circulating of crowds of people drinking alcohol on sidewalks and in other public spaces, have prompted stern warnings from Gov. Andrew Cuomo and subsequent strengthening of punishments. The State Liquor Authority was given the power to immediately suspend liquor licenses and impose $10,000 fines on businesses not enforcing rules about social distancing, and restaurants and bars were made responsible for enforcing open-container rules within 100 feet of their premises.
The violations were so flagrant that state Sen. Brad Hoylman, who introduced a bill that would allow takeout/delivery sale of cocktails and wine for two years after the COVID-19 state of disaster emergency ends, considered pulling the proposed law altogether.
"Public health has to come first," said Hoylman, a Democrat who represents parts of lower and Midtown Manhattan, in an interview with the Times Union. "I have neighbors who were afraid to come out of their apartments," he said, referring to a few days after mass gatherings of drinkers were seen in New York City two weeks ago, following the resumption of outdoor dining there.
"I'm in support of the extension" of Cuomo's executive order allowing restaurants and bars to sell cocktails and wine to go, "but there has to be more enforcement," Hoylman said.
While much much of the state is in the third phase of the economic reopening, with reduced-capacity indoor dining allowed at restaurants, New York City, with its vastly larger number of COVID-19 cases, remains in the second phase. Only outdoor dining is currently allowed. A surge of nearly 37,000 new cases nationwide, concentrated in the South and West, brought the country's highest one-day increase since the start of the pandemic, federal officials said Thursday.
New York City could enter phase three of reopening starting July 6, Mayor Bill de Blasio told the media on Thursday, but an increase in cases would further delay it.
"After all this work to move us into phase two, backsliding on the virus would de devastating" to businesses and public health, Hoylman said.
He said an extension of the executive order allows the state Legislature to continue crafting his bill to reflect current conditions. He was alarmed enough two weeks ago to say that he might consider limiting alcohol sales to delivery, not takeout, or prohibiting takeout cocktails in New York City but continuing to allow in other areas of the state with fewer cases of COVID-19 and fewer reported violations of requirements for masks and social distancing.

Oh wow, the fools of Pittsburgh have made the national news! It's CNN, so can't link.
(CNN)Covid-19 cases have spiked in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in the aftermath of the county's decision to reopen bars and restaurants, officials said. Amie Downs, the county's executive communications director, told CNN Tuesday the numbers have increased dramatically since mid-June, when bars and restaurants were permitted to reopen. The county has since closed them again to on-site consumption, but cases continue to climb. According to our health department director, before mid-June, cases were coming from household contacts or other identified places," Downs said. "In mid-June, it switched to people not knowing where they got it, so there was more community spread." Allegheny County data provided to CNN shows daily case rates stood in the single digits or teens in early June before surging in the second half of the month, hitting a June high of 109 new cases identified Tuesday.
Downs said the county health department was able to determine bars and restaurants were largely to blame after ruling out protests. Protesters who got sick were often isolated cases, she said. "Individuals reporting they attended a protest or other mass gathering have not matched, meaning they went to different protests or demonstrations," Downs said. "There was no commonality." Allegheny County is not officially tracking exact numbers by venue, but in doing contact tracing, the county has learned people attending the same bars and restaurants have contracted the virus in "dozens and dozens," she said. The county had previously entered its green phase of reopening, and Pennsylvania Health Secretary Rachel Levine said at a press conference Monday that the county would not return to the yellow phase despite the recent spike in cases. The county banned all on-premise alcohol sales at bars and restaurants as part of a more "surgical" approach, Levine said. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said Monday that he was not considering extending the alcohol ban statewide, however.

California smashes its daily coronavirus record with over 8,000 confirmed cases
California recorded its highest daily coronavirus count for the third time in just over a week on Monday with 8,000 infections while also surpassing 6,000 deaths, officials said.
The uptick comes as the virus continues to make a resurgence after months of unprecedented orders to combat its spread. Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that hospitalizations have increased 43 percent over a two-week period, as well as a 37 percent increase of patients admitted to intensive care units during the same time period.
The COVID-19 positivity rate increased to nearly 6 percent, he said.
Other states and communities are also grappling with an increase in infections, prompting some to reimpose safety protocols.
Los Angeles County — the epicenter of the virus in the state — ordered all beaches closed for the July 4th weekend after an “alarming” spike in new COVID-19 cases. Texas officials ordered bars closed for a second time and Arizona has temporarily closed: bars, gyms, water parks, movie theaters and nightclubs.
Calfornia is monitoring 19 counties amid a spike in cases and hospitalizations in those locations. An additional four could be included Wednesday, Newsom said. Statewide, nearly 223,000 people have tested positive for COVID-19.
In a dire warning Monday, Los Angeles County health officials reported that 1 in 140 people are infected. The previous data suggested 1 in 400 people.
“We are seeing an increase in transmission. We’re seeing more people get sick and go into the hospital,” said Dr. Christina Ghaly, the county’s director of health services. “This is very much a change in the trajectory of the epidemic over the past several days. It’s a change for the worse and a cause for concern.”
On Tuesday, Newsom announced that new restrictions are being pondered as case numbers increase ahead of the holiday weekend. He didn’t get into specifics.
He also voiced concerns about large gatherings, particularly family gatherings.

Alabama students partied despite knowing they had coronavirus, officials say
University of Alabama students recently partied around campus — despite knowing they were infected with the coronavirus, a local report said Tuesday.
Tuscaloosa Fire Chief Randy Smith said he discovered that “students or kids” with “known positives” had been attending parties in the county and city over the last few weeks.
Local outlet WBMA reported that some of the partiers were students at the University of Alabama.
The fire chief made the revelation during an agenda briefing for a Tuscaloosa City Council meeting, where lawmakers later passed an ordinance mandating that people wear masks in public places.
Smith said he believed the information to be a rumor at first — but that doctors’ offices and even the state confirmed it.
There have been 1,986 reported COVID-19 cases in the county and 38 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
Statewide, there have been at least 37,536 recorded infections and 926 fatalities — but the average number of daily recorded cases has recently been surging.
More than 850 new cases were reported Tuesday, and 44 people were hospitalized. More than 20 people died, according to data from the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Stonewall Inn gets $550K ‘lifeline’ to help survive coronavirus crisis
The Stonewall Inn — facing an uncertain future after shutting down during the coronavirus pandemic — has raised more than $300,000 through a GoFundMe campaign and will additionally receive a $250,000 donation from the Gill Foundation.
“We’re so happy and thankful — it’s a wonderful thing,” co-owner Stacy Lentz tells The Post. “It’s providing a lifeline, quite frankly, that we desperately need.”
However, the Greenwich Village institution — designated the country’s first historic LGBTQ landmark in 2016 — isn’t out of the woods just yet.
The site of the 1969 Stonewall Riots already was four months behind on rent — which runs more than $40,000 a month — even as NYC Pride festivities came to a close this past weekend. Being shut down for months at a time means no revenue coming in and expenses like insurance, utilities, inventory and more piling up.
“The Gill money and the community support — these things will help us get through,” says Lentz, who says the $250,000 donation is specifically earmarked for rent. “A lot of people likely think, ‘Well, that’s a lot!’ But to be honest, there are a lot of costs involved.”
And while the bar starting selling “to-go” drinks about two weeks ago, that doesn’t bring in nearly as much money as a fully operating business. As such, Lentz says she doesn’t “see a foreseeable way out of this probably until there’s a vaccine” for COVID-19 and the bar can operate at 100% capacity again.
“We just don’t see a normal operating business until there’s a vaccine; it’s just not gonna happen,” she says.
In the meantime, Lentz says they will soldier on.
“We’re not going to let it die. We’re hopeful. We’re grateful,” she says. “It’s a living, breathing piece of history, and it just means so much to our community globally. We’re just trying to do everything we can to raise enough funds to make sure that we can get through no matter what’s thrown at us.”

More than half of US restaurant closures are permanent due to coronavirus: study
Restaurants and retail shops have been hit especially hard by the coronavirus pandemic. With no dining rooms or shopping floors to fill, mom and pops are relying on delivery, takeout and curbside pickups to pay the bills. But new data reveals that many are on the brink of shutting down for good.
The new report from Yelp found that since the beginning of March, 23,981 restaurants that are listed on their platform shut down completely at some point during the pandemic, and 53% of those have already decided to close their doors for good.
That’s more than other sectors of the service industry. Retail stores are expected to lose 35% of its locations, and 24% of beauty salons and 26% of gyms are not planning to return.
Yelp told Today.com its data is “representative” of the whole of American restaurants.
According to the National Restaurant Association, “3% of restaurants have closed permanently,” said spokesperson Vanessa Sink. Using the Bureau of Labor Statistics data, that comes to nearly 20,000 closures.
“The full scope of closures won’t be known until government statistics are released months from now,” Sink said. “The association projects the final number will be in the tens of thousands.”
Yet, in spite of their financial hardships, many restaurant owners are reticent to return to business as usual.
Brooklyn restaurateur Michael Schall tells The Post that the idea of reopening his dining rooms anytime soon is “crazy.” Of his three restaurants, only one — Bar Camillo — has an outdoor space that allows him to seat a limited number of customers during New York City’s Phase 2 of nonessential businesses reopening.
Schall isn’t confident diners will be ready to come and stay indoors, either, starting July 6, when Phase 3 was slated to begin. “I don’t know if people will want to come back and eat inside a restaurant,” he says.
A recent Bloomberg report received statements from more than a half-dozen other NYC chefs — all of whom openly expressed their anxieties over reopening.
Emil Stefanov, general manager of the West Village’s Boucherie, said, “If they tell us they’re postponing the resumption of indoor dining, I won’t think how bad it is for my business. I’ll think about how bad the situation is getting [in terms of public health].”
But many Yelp users beg to differ, according to their Local Economic Impact Report, which also gauged customers’ current search interests on the platform. It reported a spike in user activity between May 1 to June 15 — during a period when several states, including New York, were slowly lifting stay-at-home restrictions.
Even if some are willing to risk it, Schall is prioritizing the health of his staff over profit.
“I’m still on the fence on whether I want people in there … Now our safe inside space just for our staff would no longer be a safe inside space,” he says.
That said, he’s just as worried about the health of his business.
“I’m really concerned about what will happen in the winter,” says Schall, who suggested he won’t be comfortable seating customers indoors until a vaccine or a breakthrough medicinal “cocktail” has been developed. In order for his restaurants and tens of thousands of others to survive the duration of 2020, he suspects more government stimulus may be called for.
“We’re gonna need more than what we’ve got now,” he says.

CNN-More than 40% of coronavirus cases in small Italian village were asymptomatic, study finds
More than 40% of people infected with coronavirus in a small village in northern Italy had no symptoms during a coronavirus outbreak earlier this year, an international team of researchers reported Tuesday.
Yet the people without symptoms had virtually the same viral load – that’s the amount of virus in their systems – as people who did have symptoms, the researchers wrote in a pre-print, non-peer reviewed report published in the journal Nature.
The team tested most of the residents of Vo after an outbreak forced a two-week lockdown of the village in February.
They found 42.5% of people with confirmed Covid-19 infections were asymptomatic, meaning they “did not have symptoms at the time of the swab testing and did not develop symptoms afterward,” researchers Enrico Lavezzo and Elisa Franchin of the University of Padova in Italy and colleagues across Europe wrote. “On the first survey, which was conducted around the time the town lockdown started, we found a prevalence of infection of 2.6%, they wrote. “On the second survey, which was conducted at the end of the lockdown, we found a prevalence of 1.2%.”
This is the first definitive assessment of the rate of asymptomatic infection in Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began, Lavezzo and Franchin’s team said.
“This figure is of enormous value as it informs estimates and decisions regarding the further dealing with the epidemic in many countries,” they wrote.
“This study sheds new light on the frequency of asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, their infectivity (as measured by the viral load) and provides new insights into its transmission dynamics and the efficacy of the implemented control measures,” they added.

Remember the article from last week where someone in Florida said they had evidence of the intention to undercount COVID cases for July 4th weekend?
Well, remarkably, Florida's COVID cases have reduced 30-40% the past few days. Texas and Arizona's numbers have either maintained or increased.
They were at 8500+ cases for 3 days and then magically went down to 5500-6000 the past 2 days.
That kind of decline does not make sense.

CNN-Toronto to require face masks in indoor public places
Toronto City Council voted unanimously in favor of requiring face masks in all indoor public places starting July 7 to help stop the spread of Covid-19, according to a statement from the city.
Businesses must adopt a policy to ensure masks or face coverings are worn in indoor public spaces under their control.
It will apply to all indoor spaces that are openly accessible to the public, including retail stores, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, gyms, swimming pools, churches, and common areas in hotels, motels and short-term rentals, among others.

CNN-Colorado governor orders bars and nightclubs to close
Bars and nightclubs that do not serve food must close during the month of July, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis announced at a briefing Tuesday.
Keeping them open is “too big a risk,” he said. They will be closed for in-person service only, and will be allowed to sell alcohol as a take-out option.
The move comes amid an uptick of Covid-19 cases in many states across the nation, including Colorado.
Bars that now serve food and function as restaurants can stay open provided there is social distancing and people remain six feet apart. Customers must also be seated with their own party.

CNN-Traveler from the US infects 71 people in China with Covid-19, research finds
A woman returning home to China from the US carried coronavirus back with her and sparked an outbreak that ended up infecting at least 71 people, researchers reported Tuesday.
It started with an elevator ride, the researchers report in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.
The woman returned to Heilongjiang Province from a trip to the US on March 19, about a week after the last coronavirus case was diagnosed in the province. She had no symptoms and tested negative for coronavirus, but was asked to quarantine at home.
No one suspected anything was wrong until a man with no obvious connection to the traveler suffered a stroke. It turns out he had been at a party with relatives of a neighbor living in the same building as the traveler.
When the researchers in China finally put the story together, they determined that the traveler must have somehow contaminated the elevator in her building. Her downstairs neighbor, who used the same elevator, also got infected, and she in turn infected her mother and her mother’s boyfriend. They went to a party and infected the stroke patient and his sons.
The stroke patient and two of his sons went to two hospitals. At least 28 people were infected at the first hospital and 20 more were infected when he was moved to a second facility.
When the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention investigated the genetic makeup of the virus found in this new outbreak, they found it was different from strains previously seen in China. The viruses in the patients were genetically identical or at least very similar, which led them to believe the virus originated overseas.
When investigators learned that a neighbor of one of the cases had recently returned from abroad, they tested her again. She was not currently infected but had antibodies to the virus, indicating a previous infection. They designated her A0, meaning she was the first case. “Therefore, we believe A0 was an asymptomatic carrier and that B1.1 (her neighbor) was infected by contact with surfaces in the elevator in the building where they both lived,” they wrote. Other residents in the building all tested negative.
“As of April 22, 2020, A0 remained asymptomatic, and a total of 71 SARS-CoV-2–positive cases had been identified in the cluster,” the researchers wrote.
“Our results illustrate how a single asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection could result in widespread community transmission.”

cnn-More than 20 police officers injured after clashes at illegal street party in London
London (CNN)At least 22 police officers were injured and emergency vehicles were damaged in London overnight, after a street party -- illegal under Covid-19 rules -- descended into violence.
Officers arrived to break up the event in Brixton, south London on Wednesday evening, but clashes broke out and led to chaotic scenes that have been condemned by the mayor of London and the UK's Home Secretary.
Footage appears show police cars being attacked and officers being chased away by revelers, with some throwing bottles towards the authorities. Unverified videos posted to Snapchat in the area appear to show police vehicles retreating from the crowds in the early hours of Thursday.
"Officers attended to encourage the crowd to leave the location but they did not engage with police. The event continued and more officers attended the scene and the group became hostile towards officers," the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
None of the officers were seriously injured but two required hospital treatment, the force added. Four arrests were made for assault and public order offences.
Illegal raves and street parties have been gaining popularity in Britain in recent weeks, even as the coronavirus pandemic has forced the country into lockdown. Police have urged people not to attend, but in some cases the large crowd sizes and impromptu nature of the events have left them unable to break up the gatherings.
"I'm in touch with the Met about the completely unacceptable events in Brixton overnight. Violence against the police will not be tolerated," London's mayor Sadiq Khan said on Twitter. "Large gatherings during COVID19 are deeply irresponsible and risk others' lives."
"These are utterly vile scenes," the UK's Home Secretary Priti Patel added. "Just last weekend, the whole country came together to praise our heroic police officers for putting their own lives on the line to keep us safe."
The London Ambulance Service said it received "multiple calls" to the area overnight, sending six ambulance crews to the scene and an advanced trauma team.

De Blasio delays NYC indoor dining following coronavirus surge
Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday slammed the brakes on resuming indoor dining in the city — following a troubling surge in coronavirus cases across the nation.
“The bad news is regarding a situation we’ve seen now all over the country,” the mayor said at his daily press briefing. “We cannot go ahead at this point in time with indoor dining in New York City.
“Even a week ago honestly I was hopeful that we could. But the news we’ve gotten around the country gets worse and worse all the time.”
He pointed to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in states like Florida and Texas, which began reopening ahead of New York City.
De Blasio said the city would “double down” on plans to expand outdoor dining.

And it's worth noting that California is one of the states with a significant delta between Covid-19 deaths and excess deaths. It's not as if Newsom is going out of his way to minimize this. For sure, the delta in US excess deaths is also linked to insufficient testing and federal government support under Chump in addition to the mysterious nature of this virus which seems to have no affect on some and deadly affects on others. Autopsies on Covid-19 victims may influence new treatment protocols.
One part of the article dealing with the brain and the question of whether even Covid-19 survivors will be brain-impaired in some way:
When the brain does not get enough oxygen, individual neurons die, and that death is permanent. To a certain extent, people’s brains can compensate, but at some point, the damage is so extensive that different functions start to degrade.
On a practical level, (Dr.) Solomon said, if the virus is not getting into the brain in large amounts, that helps with drug development because treatment becomes trickier when it is pervasive, for instance, in some patients with West Nile or HIV.
Another takeaway is that the findings underscore the importance of getting people on supplementary oxygen quickly to prevent irreversible damage.
Solomon, whose work was published as a June 12 letter in the New England Journal of Medicine, said the findings suggest the damage had been happening over a longer period of time, which makes him wonder about the virus’s effect on people who are less ill. “The big lingering question is what happens to people who survive covid,” he said. “Is there a lingering effect on the brain?”

I have to confess, I have tentatively booked a very long cruise to Anartica next March. It is the trip of a lifetime and it happens during my birthday. It is a relatively big boat with few passengers and the deposit is low and is guaranteed. Meaning that I can cancel up to 30 days before departure. The total price is also 50% less than normal due to the circumstances. Nevertheless, I feel really guilty as it is a cruise, especially in these times. Fortunately there are very few buffets (mostly table service), and I am willing to do whatever it takes to stay safe on board assuming the cruise actually takes place. I remember taking a similar chance just after 911. I was living in San Francisco at the time. Like now, the travel industry was struggling. I found a roundtrip deal to Paris for 7 nights for $250 including hote! Crazy price! It was my first trip to Europe. I also met my husband during this vacation. Fast forward to today and we are still living happily together. Sometimes you have to roll the dice.

CNN-Florida's governor has no plans to close state beaches or parks despite rising cases From CNN's Jessica King
As Covid-19 cases continue to rise in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday he was less worried about July 4 outdoor gatherings this coming weekend because “the science is pretty clear” that they are safer.
There are no plans at the state level to close beaches or parks.
“Doing things outdoors in Florida is less risky than doing things when you’re packed indoors,” he said in a news conference Wednesday, in response to a question about Fourth of July weekend. He added that “it needs to be controlled” but that certain localities are doing that, and that his bigger concern was people crowding indoors.

cnn-Austin City Limits Music Festival canceled this year
The Austin City Limits Music Festival is canceled for this year, according to a statement on the festival website.
"The health and safety of our fans, artists, partners, staff and the entire Austin community remains our highest priority," the statement read. It will return to Austin in 2021 for the 20th anniversary of the festival.
"Few events are rooted in – & embody - the soul of this city like ACL Fest & their hard decision for the greater good is applauded," Austin Mayor Steve Fisher tweeted. "While the show won’t go on this year, there are many ways to support local musicians while we all look forward to the 20th Anniversary next year."
The statement says that tickets purchased for this year's festival, which was scheduled to take place over two weekends in October, will be honored next year. Refunds are being offered to the fans who are unable to attend the 2021 dates.
The 2018 festival brought in $264.6 million, according to an economic impact report commissioned by the festival. The 2019 data has not been released as of July 1.
ACL Fest attracted 450,000 festival goers in 2018, according to C3 Presents, which puts on the annual festival.

Texas bar owner plans to hold mask-free July 4 event From CNN's Jason Kurtz
Gabrielle Ellison plans to keep her Texas bar open amid the Covid-19 pandemic, a decision that directly defies Gov. Greg Abbott's order.
"If I don't, I'm going to lose my bar. If I don't, my employees are not going to be able to eat. And I believe we have rights that are being trampled on right now," Ellison told CNN's Brooke Baldwin during a live CNN interview.
A group of bar owners across the state have joined forces to sue Abbott over the shutdown order.
“He’s picking and choosing winners and losers, so bar owners, they are being sentenced to bankruptcy. But if you're a hair salon, if you're a cosmetologist, if you're a tattoo studio, if you're a barber, you're not just going to survive right now, you're going to thrive," said Jared Woodfill, the attorney representing the Texas bar owners.
Ellison maintained that her decision is motivated by a desire to support her employees.
"I care about them. This is not going to go away. We have got to learn how to live with this. And what I do care about is that children eat," she said.
With the Fourth of July holiday just days away, Ellison is planning a special event, and pledges not to enforce any type of mask mandate.
“I am not going to make people do anything. I am not going to take their rights away," she said.
Noting that people who are sick have the option to stay home, Ellison stood firm on her decision to remain open, a choice she sees as an American right.
"It is not the government's right to take that choice away from us," she said. "Why are we sitting down and letting this happen? What is wrong? ...why are you giving your rights up?”
