I didn’t really feel the chemistry between Miles and Charlie the way I did between M and Winston or even M and Zach.

I agree, r3. There was zero chemistry between the two actors/characters and Miles looked completely disconnected in their scenes together. The Alex/Winston scenes were definitely more believable and they made for a more intriguing pairing.

Overall I loved the season. I was a bit bummed about the lack of whimsy in the opening credits though. Loved the drama and loved how Alex goes gay and dates two guys in the final season. The season is incredibly gay friendly and gay positive.

Was the scene of the new school administrator, Foundly (played by Reed Diamond) introducing his husband to Clay a callback to the scene in the first season where Tony told Clay that he was gay? Both times Clay is totally surprised.

No episodes were directed by Gregg Araki like in the previous seasons. What was that about? But Brenda Strong did some fantastic directing in the episode about the lockdown.

13RW wouldn't be 13RW without a tragic death. Loved that they reminded the viewers that AIDS is still out there killing people.

At some point I thought it would be revealed, in a Pretty Little Liars fashion, that Clay was drugged (by Winston?) somehow to get him all crazy and paranoid and to finally confess. Then they went with the football team playing games with him. It's interesting that Clay's hero complex, trying to save his friends, took a toll on Clay finally. And the show made a good point that Ari was into Clay for a similar reason (taking care of someone).

Fuck this show. Using HIV/AID'S in the exploitive way they did was unnecessary and implausible. I hope the writers on this show never work again. Cheap bullshit. Fuck them.

Winston should be with Tyler. Both of them enjoy photography, equally sensitive and been hurt by Monty. With all the shit he gone through Tyler deserved some kind of happy ending.

The way Alex cut loose Winston right away after having learned why W got close to him seemed like art was imitating life. My delicate Miley did the same when Brandon did hurt his feelings.

The show is for teens and those teens don't share the same TV and movie history as most of us. I am sure for some teens an AIDS death wasn't as cliché a for some of us eldergays.

It was more than a year. Justin was homeless and still using IV drugs (probably with dirty needles and risking reinfection). His existence was fraught and stressful. Not helpful for an immune system under attack. He also may have a been a Rapid Progressor. There’s also the theory that he was infected as a child by his mom’s boyfriend.

The show made a point to mention that Justin rejected to be tested for HIV in the past. The virus remained untreated and unchallenged in his body to do its job.

And let's not forget how it was Justin who pushed Jessica away whenever she tried to make out with him claiming it was because of his sobriety. He knew what was going on, at the beginning of the season, even without official confirmation. She would've noticed the skin lesions. Clay was too busy with his own issues to notice.

I don't think it's that unlikely that an introvenious drug user and prostitute might end up with AIDS even these days.

On another subject... I noticed Charlie chose the tiara at the prom.

The depiction of mental illness was also dangerous. Hallucinations and amnesia are very serious symptoms, indicating psychosis rather than anxiety. Clay never even told his doctor about the hallucinations. He Commits serious acts of vandalism, twice threatens people with guns, leads a school riot, runs away from the hospital and faces no consequences. Instead, he is well enough to speak at graduation and go off to an Ivy League college after a short course of talk therapy.

The craziest thing about this show is that the cast seems to really love it. You just don’t see interviews like this from the Riverdale stars, who openly mock their show and already had several main characters ask to be released from their contracts.

It makes me think the atmosphere on set was mostly good, with the exception of your usual small fires like two cast members hooking up (Brandon and Miles).

This was a high school in the SF Bay Area. Obviously it’s going to be a lot more liberal than a high school in Texas.

But it is fantasy. Many fans of the show hated the prom scene when everyone was thrilled two gays won, especially after the show depicted homophobia etc. from the jocks many times throughout the series.

The gay quarterback also used the word faggot last season.

They just desperately needed a happy ending for Alex, who tried to kill himself in literally almost every season of this show. He was hands down the most miserable character.

The driver didn't have a single scratch on them and it's not mentioned by anyone other than two lines between the two people who were in it? This season is a shitshow.

That's one comment while countless experts and activists have weighed in that it's just unrealistic.

I think the problem is that it was clearly meant to make the show as sensational as possible. He went from having enough energy to dance at the prom to dying in a matter of weeks. Their mother says that they got him the best GP and he had a physical but his doctor said that he refused to be tested. However, the guy also went into rehab separately where as a former IV drug user they would have really pushed for it. He also previously told Jessica so it wasn't a complete secret.

Also Clay's parents were obsessive about Clay's mental state back in season one but didn't care in season four (or notice their son was snapping) nor did they notice Justin didn't just have the "flu." They would have. His parents in season one would have dragged his ass to the doctor as soon as they saw he was sick.

If they were so hell bent on killing him off before graduation they should have just had the character OD which would have been overall much more realistic for his situation. On a better show he would have lived with it and maybe taught kids (the audience this show was supposed to be for) about it.

One thing I will say about Justin Flynn is that all of the gossip surrounding his relationships off screen notwithstanding he is a great actor. I think this was the first time I ever really noticed.

It really hit me hard when Clay looked at Justin's empty bed for the last time. Poor boy was never meant to have a happy ending. AIDS? That was merciless.

So Miles is seriously doing zero press/talking to gay outlets about this season? It's Pride Month and his character made a major gay turn, I expected him to at least say something about its positive message or whatever. Very odd.

Brandon and Dylan were the ones who really pushed for Justin dying:

I feel like it was a strong choice to make and as devastating as it is, I am so happy that Brian ended up making the decision to do it because it just felt right. If we were going to do it to anyone, I feel like we needed to go there and put the bookend on it.

Yeah, sounds like they wanted Justin to die for the emotional wallop it would bring, but the way it was handled was all on the shitty writing. He should have OD’ed.

Justifying the HIV storyline:

If he ODed there’d be no series of tearful goodbyes, no dramatic hospital vigils.

Brandon did a good job with these videos but it’s still gross that the show is justifying that offensive storyline.

The AIDS scene was painful to watch but I think they wrapped up the series beautifully when the gang buried Hannah's old tape. Must be awkward for Ani or Charlie to be there since they're not even part of that story arc.

Justin and Jessica were by far the most popular characters in 13RW that's why they killed him, even Brian Yorkey has admitted to it, they did the same with Poussey Washington in Orange is the New Black.

Clay was the least interesting character in this show, I found myself more often than not, wanting to kill him and that British chick, who will forever be remembered as the worst addition to a TV show in recent memory, truly atrocious writing (good actress though).
