This is the background to Carillo's tweet. Yes, it's Enchanted Kingdom stuff.

The link at R6 also offers some explanation regarding the "boobs out" gesture:
[quote] Djokovic has previously worked with a “spiritual guru,” who reportedly encouraged him to make a loving gesture towards the crowd after every win, as the Serb thought outside the box in search of mental and physical advantages over his rivals.

he's entered into batshit crazy territory
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 9, 2020 3:30 AM |
Even Ben Rothenberg thinks Djokovic should rein in his craziness, if for no other reason than he's got so many followers who might critically subscribe to his madness. Makes you wonder how much of his "retraction" regarding his stance on a potential Covid-19 vaccine was really sincere and not just another exercise in PR management. He really is a loon.

Agree with R11, Novak clearly the most intelligent of the Big Three, but he really is letting this New Age stuff go too far. He's in a public position to influence people, so he better be damn sure what he's talking about. And he's not.

Rafa says all players should get vaccinated. (Interview badly translated from Spanish.)
"Each one is free, but if you belong to a circuit, perhaps one has to be governed by the rules that the circuit demands, if it obliges vaccination to protect everyone, because Djokovic will have to be vaccinated if he wants to continue playing tennis at the highest level, or me. Each one will have to comply. If the ATP or the ITF forces us to get a vaccine to play tennis, then we will have to get it."
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 10, 2020 10:17 PM |
uh oh vax rift between Nadal and Djokovic!
what does Federer think?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 10, 2020 10:41 PM |
I don't see a rift. It is simple, he says if vaccines are a must, Novak will have to comply...or won't be allowed to play. Novak himself said he would rethink it if it becomes obligatory.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 10, 2020 11:53 PM |
And for once, Rafa is totally right. Having a vaccine doesn't mean a thing if enough people don't take it.
Berretini said he won't donate money for players outside the top 100 (but he said he prefers to donate that money for hospitals)

was anyone watching the "LIVE" return to tennis this week on the tennis channel?
the 4 men and the 4 women round robin ITR "tournament"?... sorry, but i found it all lame, ridiculous and pretty sad pathetic! i mean no top players on either side (except for riske as the highest ranked at what #20?), no ball boys or girls, no linesman, only playing to 4 games to win a set and all of it taking place at some wealthy person's backyard tennis court! really? REALLY? they couldn't find any empty stadium/arena high school, college, professional, etc. anywhere in southern florida to hold this at! looked like a junior tournament site played in the middle of nowhere!.... embarrassing it looked for a professional sport!. even the cars parked on the grass outside of the court!

The Prima Donna Tour?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 25, 2020 8:23 PM |
That's very disappointing if true. I always had a crush on him and loved his 'live by the sword, die by the sword' aggressive game. His Hamburg runs were thoroughly entertaining, especially him hitting Zverev off the court. But he's always seemed a little off, I mean he goes beyond just being 'quiet' and 'awkward' (Osaka wishes she had that kind of natural social ineptitude lol).
As for the tennis, I did not watch. The format with the truncated sets is always a flop, i'd almost rather watch tiebreak tens (some players need 4 games just to warm up!) and the whole thing has been funded by Riske's husband and the Ellison family. Sick of these Tennis Channel vanity projects.
The upcoming one with Andreescu, Azarenka, Kenin, Keys, Stephens, Anisimova, Puig!, Bouchard (lol) and more seems like a much better lineup, but still has the same stench of nepotism with Emma Navarro's father organising it ($$$$) and her being one of the 16 players chosen despite her very poor resume. Also i'm BEYOND sick of Bethanie Mattek Sands at this point.
A lot of other countries are doing their own tournaments. Everywhere from Hungary, to the Czech Republic (good WTA field if not ATP), to Austria (featuring the return of Tamira Paszek!). The lower ranked Spanish men like Verdasco and Lopez seem to be planning something too. Still, even with the hitches I appreciate that steps are being taken to test the waters and get real tennis back up and running soon. I just hope it's in a better format soon.

by Anonymous | reply 77 | June 3, 2020 1:37 PM |
The ATP apology was about a video they retweeted about different types of player. One of the types was a "sissy" player who was effeminate.
They were right to apologise.
"Tennis twitter" is all up in arms because the Big Three have only tweeted black squares rather than actually saying something about what's going on.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | June 3, 2020 1:47 PM |
Naomi Osaka has really been getting out and protesting. Good for her and Cori Gauff for using their voices and using them loudly. And I say that as someone who is not a fan of either on the court, or the massive media sensation around them. A lot of the international players have been quite vocal too.
I especially loved Naomi tweeting at John Isner for his tone deaf posts complaining about looters but not the death of Floyd. When will we be rid of the Isners and Sandgrens of the tennis world? It's bad enough we have to watch them servebot every tournament. :(
Rumours emerging that Cincinnati will try and have their tournament in New York at the BJK centre 2 weeks before the US Open (if they still have it). Which seems odd to me... just playing the same tournament twice in a row but one of them is a grand slam? Rome are trying to play between the French Open (with a September date) and the US Open. It seems like if there ARE tournaments this year, it will be a shit fight between them to see which ones actually get played.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | June 4, 2020 9:39 AM |
I'm starting to think that Cori could be really great for the wta. If she is able to back these early results and progress, she has tons of charisma an unlike people like Nadal or Federer, she is not afraid to speak her mind

of course Gauff would be great for the WTA if she can keep progressing. She's already accomplished so much at her age. Now learning that she has a voice to speak on important issues makes her even more likable.

by Anonymous | reply 87 | June 6, 2020 6:21 PM |
I sincerely hope the Basilashvili thing isn't true but i'm not holding my breath. Agreed R87 on his wispy moustache, it only makes him look more prepubescent.
I find the Alexis Ohanian thing weird. He says he is stepping down from his role to give his seat at the company (and voice, and role) to a black person. But wouldn't it be more effective to stay with the company and implement that sort of change at an executive / hiring level? Rather than just up and leaving? Does this make Serena the sole breadwinner? In all honestly I find him very strange.
Do you guys think pro tennis will actually be held this year? The USO, RG, Rome and Cincinnati seem very determined to get something going in September.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | June 6, 2020 7:02 PM |
I think that Alexis has other gigs, R88, and no longer owns shares in Reddit; his power in the company is/was mostly symbolic. I agree that he is very odd. I've often wondered if he has a touch of autism. But he loves being Mr. Serena Williams, if that works for her, so be it.
RG seems to be bound and determined to happen, but I think that the USO is a huge question. I'm not sure that New York will be ready for it.

Djokovic has expressed his concerns over the "extreme" conditions that a 2020 US Open would have to be played under
"We would not have access to Manhattan, we would have to sleep in hotels at the airport, to be tested twice or three times per week. Also, we could bring one person to the club which is really impossible. You need your coach, then a fitness trainer, then a physiotherapist."
by Anonymous | reply 92 | June 7, 2020 12:29 PM |
The only extreme is the fact that they want matches at the best of three sets and that's a deal breaker for me. A GS is played at the best of five sets, period

sorry but the "we would not have access to Manhattan" bit sounds really spoiled. They don't NEED to be in Manhattan
couldn't they bring their physiotherapist and just have their coach and trainers watch and talk to them on facetime?
I agree the USO should be canceled though as cases aren't going down fast enough and who knows when the second wave will start
by Anonymous | reply 97 | June 7, 2020 5:45 PM |
Easy for Novak, who has made hundreds of millions, to say the US open shouldn't be played if they are going to play it under different conditions. But what about the player ranked 70th who badly needs that first round prize money?

It would be IDIOTIC to hold the US Open as a shell. Atmosphere counts for a heck of a lot. Just don't hold it - or call it a patriotic tournament. It can't have grand slam status without the best players, fans, etc. Tennis gets SO much wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | June 14, 2020 4:46 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 105 | June 14, 2020 8:08 PM |
R102 I kind of agree with you actually, but the USTA just laid off 110 employees. They are in a dire place financially, so i'm sure they are desperate to hold it.
I read somewhere that they spend roughly $50m to put on the event every year (and $57m in total prize money) but pull in around $220m in profits. That includes ticket sales, sponsorship money, and I guess international TV sales and advertising too.
Roland Garros is desperate also, because they just spent a pretty penny on that long-overdue retractable roof and the new Simone Mathieu court. These slams will potentially go into debt if they don't hold the event this year.
Wimbledon was very wise indeed to take out disaster insurance when they did. The other 2 remaining slams are scrambling. It's sad for all involved.

by Anonymous | reply 107 | June 15, 2020 8:29 PM |
They should hold USO virtually. They likely to be up against the same thing in 2021 too, so best to climb on that horse as quickly as possible. I mean at age 62, I won't be comfortable in big crowds until there is a vaccine, and that may take years. And it isn't the youngsters keeping the cash flowing at USO, they aren't buying the tickets, its the 'mature crowd' attending, be it from their own pocket or corporate perks. And I say this before the possibility of a 'second wave'.

notice how NO ONE on the tennis channel ever ever EVER comments on the cost of the sport, how it's losing viewers and fans and how the powers that be seemingly are okay with making the sport back to a "rich mans' game" and even MORE of a NICHE sport then ever before!...

He was in California until around June 1st. And then returned to Europe for Novak's tournament and spent time in Monaco, Bulgaria, Serbia and Croatia.
Looking at the photos he's tagged in on Instagram - he was hugging, kissing, and touching at least a dozen other players including Thiem, Novak, Cilic,, and Zvereva. He was even going to nightclubs in Belgrade with Novak and Thiem.
He might've infected a dozen other players!

I might be sympathetic to Grigor if they hadn't shown complete hubris in the face of a global pandemic. Literally there are photos of them all clubbing together, drinking, laughing, dancing, hugging... the schadenfreude is a bit delicious. I hope Novak gets sick too.
On the other hand, how the fuck are they supposed to hold the US Open and other events without anybody getting infected? People have to quarantine in NYC and play the Cincinnati Open for 2 weeks and then the US Open for 2? There are over 500 players, let alone volunteers / security / coaches / cleaners / team members / drivers etc. Surely they're not all quarantining at the same place. What's stopping one of the drivers getting it back at their home in Queens or Brooklyn and inadvertently spreading it to a player?
And if a player DOES get it, does that mean the tournament has to be put on pause? Is the player immediately eliminated and has to forfeit their match? It's going to be a financial disaster if the Cincinnati Open proves a failure and COVID spreads like fire there, meaning it won't be possible to hold the US Open afterward at the exact same location (a much bigger event, obviously).
Either way, it would help if the players were taking safety precautions more seriously.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | June 21, 2020 6:22 PM |
makes Djokovic look even dumber now
bitching about the USO possibly being held but there he goes at an exhibition and clearly they weren't tested prior to the event. I would think since he's so paranoid he would have made everyone get tested. He thinks something will only happen in NYC?
then Djokovic is a nutjob and Serbian nationalist. Serbia is an ally of Russia so it's not surprising
I would hope if the USO does go forward, they test everyone before holding it. They should test everyone when the player lists comes out then test them again upon their arrival to NYC
by Anonymous | reply 158 | June 21, 2020 6:26 PM |
we have to remember a lot of these players are dumb as rocks.
A lot of them never finished school or went a much more condensed "school" to accommodate their focus on tennis
Dimitrov is clearly no genius
by Anonymous | reply 159 | June 21, 2020 6:27 PM |
Also missed it by a few days but Granny Vee turned 40! Crazy that she's spent 27 years on the tour... she started her career in the same main draw as Martina Navratilova, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, and Zina Garrison. How many players have come and gone since?
I see she's been busy during quarantine with her CBS show, businesses and new sunscreen line. Hopefully she's nursed her injuries, she looks absolutely shredded in the photo below (taken a few days ago). Would love to see her back in 2017 form and snatch a big title when the WTA resumes.

The USTA's plan was to lock all the players in at the Flushing Holiday Inn for 4 weeks - and test everyone before they got there and every 2 days or something.

They are all over the LPSG tennis thread. It actually almost looked like a drag bar, there was some sort of performance on at least.
I hope the USTA doesn't bend over and just allow Novak to bring his 30 member entourage just because they won't have Federer (and maybe not even Nadal) to sell the mens draw. Especially with him basically spitting in the face of everyone's safety like this.

I wonder if Djokovic WILL get tested (and just didn't get tested at the hub because he didn't want to make his results public) or if he won't get tested at all. He needs to put out a public statement immediately. And I would argue an apology to Ivanisevic for making him take the heat from the crowd when it was Novak who was supposed to play the match anyway.

i know for the most part they are LITERALLY ignorant and stupid (and probably don't know the difference between ignorance and stupidity) but come on!...
just like the trump shit show in tulsa everyone deserves to get the virus and get sick, maybe just maybe they'll from then on have a clue!.
by Anonymous | reply 221 | June 22, 2020 2:54 PM |
Djokovic is getting a serious roasting...people are in disbelief that this event was allowed to take place in this climate. It does not matter if the host countries have/had low totals - your still playing with fire, especially since the organizers had no protocols in place to protect the public & players.
R218, I will be shocked if he actually releases a statement to apologize for this debacle. IF he gets tested which I highly doubt I would not believe the results. He and his wife don't even believe that COVID-19 is real...so even if he tested positive he would never be truthful about the results.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | June 22, 2020 3:12 PM |
I don't mind that they put on an event.
What I DO mind is the clubbing, hugging, touching, playing basketball (completely unnecessary), autographs, unlimited spectators, no masks, a CHILDRENS DAY (arguably the fastest way to spread an infectious virus), handshaking, etc. This is very frustrating for everyone else doing their best to get the tour back up and running in a safe manner.
I pray that the WTA event this week with the likes of Andreescu, Keys, Azarenka, Stephens, Puig!, Anisimova, BMS, Riske, etc. goes ahead safely and without any hiccups. Just to show that it IS possible to hold an event if you do it responsibly. And to further highlight how moronic these ATP players have been.

R219 Coric and Dimitrov are the ones who have tested positive so far, although that's only as far as we know publicly. But also two coaches have tested positive - Dimitrov's coach, and Novak's fitness coach who almost certainly has had a lot of contact with him. And I believe one or two of the Serbian basketball players who were there have tested positive as well.
Interesting that even Djokovic's brother (who is also a player) was at the public testing booth with the other players but Novak wasn't.
This video below proves that Dimitrov knew something wasn't right and still decided to play. So far these are the exact two players who tested positive. I would be pissed at Grigor if I were Borna (although who even knows which player is patient zero in this 'cluster').
