If they didn't try to remove the stone immediately, that probably means the stone had caused infection and they won't try to removed it until the infection is completely cleared with antibiotics. The fact they kept her for several days suggests the initial treatment was on IV antibiotics and she will go back regularly for monitoring while on oral antibiotics until they are sure the infection is gone.

R213, not necessarily. my partner had an infected gall bladder and was too scared to go to the ER last year. He started literally turning yellow. Stopped eating and had a fever in addition to the pain. He lay on the couch and his eyes glazed over until I finally got him to the hospital. Turns out, as you said, they could not operate until his white blood count was at the right level, and they had the infection under control. So they started him on an intravenous antibiotic, and waited a few hours. But they did operate.

His gall bladder had turned gangrenous and was ready to burst! He had the stones, but he ignored the fleeting discomfort and the doc said if we had waited he'd have been dead within the next 8 hours. The stones were blocking the bile duct and it affected his liver. He was jaundiced. He was in the hospital for over a week on an antibiotic drip and came home with a tiny hose draining infection out of an open incision. Consequently I did learn a lot. In Ruth Ginsberg's case I don't think she has an infection. I think she is probably too high of a risk for surgery at this point, because of her age and her history, so they will try the non surgical method.
