Chinese real estate tycoon under investigation after allegedly criticising Xi Jinping's coronavirus response

From CNN’s Steven Jiang in Beijing

In a brief statement released Tuesday, Beijing authorities said Ren Zhiqiang, a real estate tycoon with close ties to senior Chinese officials, has been placed under investigation for alleged "serious violations" of laws and Communist Party regulations.

The statement did not give other details.

Ren, 69, was born into a family of Communist ruling elite and is known for his outspoken style.

After allegedly penning a scathing article on President Xi Jinping's handling of the coronavirus crisis, he reportedly disappeared last month with rumors swirling about his detention by the authorities.

Justice Department employees told to wear face coverings in common areas

From CNN's David Shortell

The deputy attorney general told Justice Department employees to wear face coverings in common areas at agency buildings in a memo to staff on Tuesday.

The memo follows and notes country-wide guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that face coverings should be worn in public settings. The guidance also comes as many Justice Department employees continue to stay out of the office and work from home.

Employees who work out of a government building are told they may remove the covering in a private office, cubicle or workspace where at least six feet of social distancing can be maintained from others.

Some context: Attorney General William Barr has referred to some social distancing policies as "draconian" and called for steps towards normalcy to resume after the end of the month, but he's also acknowledged the administration's stay at home directives were necessary to combat the virus.

More recently, Barr softened his tone and expressed support for the federal guidelines.

For his part, Barr frequently wears a mask around the Justice Department as he continues to report to work during the pandemic, he told Fox News in an interview last week. He also wears one along with his security detail when he commutes into Washington every morning, he said.

Switzerland faces shortages of ICU drugs for coronavirus patients

From Nadine Schmidt in Berlin

Switzerland faces shortages of medicine for coronavirus patients in intensive care unit, the country's health ministry admitted Tuesday, calling the situation 'tense.'

Patrick Mathys, the head of the Swiss federal health ministry resolution team, told reporters in a press conference 'there are real bottlenecks for essential medicines in intensive care' adding that 'there has been some easing of the situation, but in the long term it's a huge problem."

Mathys went on to say that the country competes with the international market to purchase more drugs and that the procurement of medicine is equally as challenging as procuring protective masks.

'We need to procure these (intensive care medicine) as much as we can on the international market but you can imagine that as with protective masks, these drugs are also in demand again worldwide. The situation is tense,' he said.

Switzerland's death toll from coronavirus stands at 973 on Wednesday, according to figures from the Federal Office for Public Health. In addition, the number of infected cases has risen to 26,336-- an increase of 502 cases within the last 24 hours.

The country’s Federal Council, which extended lockdown measures until April 26, said it would convene on Thursday to discuss easing of restrictions and observe developments in neighboring countries like Austria, which began to allow partial returns to work after Easter.

Japan could see 400,000 deaths if coronavirus is not contained

From CNN's Yoko Wakatsuki

More than 400,000 people could die of Covid-19 in Japan if nothing is done to contain the virus, according to a report released Wednesday by the Japanese Health Ministry and reported by public broadcaster NHK.

The report also says 850,000 patients would need ventilators.

"If we receive the outbreak without any weapon to protect ourselves, the number of severe cases will exceed existing number of ventilators," Dr. Hiroshi Nishiura said, the head of the panel.

"All Japanese must change the pattern of action and help us to stop this outbreak as soon as possible," he added.

Some context: Japan officially declared a state of emergency on April 7, months after the first domestic cases of the virus appeared. On Wednesday a public health emergency was issued for all of Japan by the commander of the US Forces Japan (USFJ) amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Actress Taraji P. Henson creates free virtual therapy for black communities affected by coronavirus

From CNN's Adrienne Vogt

Award-winning actress Taraji P. Henson is offering up to five free therapy sessions for minority communities reeling from the coronavirus pandemic through her mental health foundation.

“No one should be suffering right now in silence. That breaks my heart to know that so many people are. And you should not be afraid to talk about your mental health. And you shouldn't have to choose between a meal and your mental health,” she told CNN today. “These scars will last forever. They won't go away. People will be traumatized forever. Families will be destroyed and ripped apart."

Henson said the racial disparity of coronavirus cases is “alarming.”

“I had to do something. … It is hard enough and most difficult for the black community to even speak up about mental illnesses or mental health because of the stigma around it in the community. So I felt like I had to do something in this moment in time to relieve the stress, the anxiety, to save some lives,” she said.

Henson encouraged people to use their time at home during the coronavirus to assess their mental health and take action. Henson has said she suffers from depression and anxiety and launched a foundation named after her father, a Vietnam veteran.

Brands showing how they really care about Coronavirus.

by Anonymousreply 20April 15, 2020 4:11 PM

On a Saturday in early March, Donald J. Trump, clad in a baseball cap, strode into the Situation Room for a meeting with the coronavirus task force. He didn’t stop by the group’s daily meetings often, but he had an idea he was eager to share: He wanted to start a White House talk radio show.

At the time, the virus was rapidly spreading across the country, and Mr. Trump would soon announce a ban on European travel. A talk radio show, Mr. Trump excitedly explained, would allow him to quell Americans’ fears and answer their questions about the pandemic directly, according to three White House officials who heard the pitch. There would be no screening, he said, just an open line for people to call and engage one-on-one with the president.

But that Saturday, almost as suddenly as he proposed it, the president outlined one reason he would not be moving forward with it: He did not want to compete with Rush Limbaugh.

No one in the room was sure how to respond, two of the officials said. Someone suggested hosting the show in the mornings or on weekends, to steer clear of the conservative radio host’s schedule. But Mr. Trump shook his head, saying he envisioned his show as two hours a day, every day. And were it not for Mr. Limbaugh, and the risk of encroaching on his territory, he reiterated, he would do it.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 21April 15, 2020 4:12 PM

One of the officials involved directly in the effort said it wasn’t the first time Mr. Trump had discussed hosting a radio show from the White House. But if some in the room were unsure whether the president’s proposal was a joke, they knew his deference to Mr. Limbaugh was anything but.

When it comes to the president’s favored media figures, most observers tend to fixate on the Fox News lineup of Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity. But several people close to Mr. Trump say that in the midst of a pandemic, he has come to keenly appreciate the extent of Mr. Limbaugh’s reach, and the fact that his show, perhaps more than any other source, offers a real-time metric of how the president’s decisions are playing with his supporters.

Now, as multiple voices vie for the president’s ear on the appropriate timeline for America’s path to normalcy, Mr. Limbaugh is amplifying Mr. Trump’s instinct for swiftness. And for this president, as well as much of his party, Mr. Limbaugh’s affirmation remains a powerful motivator.

“Talk radio is still a powerhouse when it comes to Republican voters,” said Jason Miller, co-host of the War Room podcast and a former Trump communications adviser. And the president, Mr. Miller said, “realizes how big a powerhouse Rush is.”

by Anonymousreply 22April 15, 2020 4:13 PM

Trump's trying to come up with something he can do post-presidency. Of course he wants to start it while he's still President so he can get as much free publicity (and public funds) as possible.

by Anonymousreply 23April 15, 2020 4:14 PM

The White House declined to comment on Mr. Trump’s desire for a radio show.

“The Rush Limbaugh Show” has been the most popular talk-radio show in the country for decades, currently drawing 15.5 million listeners a week. In that time Mr. Limbaugh has traded in the kind of deeply divisive messaging that Mr. Trump regularly brandishes to appeal to his conservative base.

Like the president, Mr. Limbaugh has also dispensed disinformation and falsehoods at a rapid clip. In the last few weeks alone he has repeatedly referred to the coronavirus as the “common cold.” His history of anti-gay remarks was revived as recently as February, when he said Americans would not elect Pete Buttigieg after seeing him “kissing his husband onstage, next to Mr. Man, Donald Trump.” (Mr. Limbaugh later told listeners that Mr. Trump had called him and told him not to apologize for the comments.)

Mr. Limbaugh is among Mr. Trump’s most influential backers, praising him for his politics and leadership well before many other Republicans cast their lot with him. He recently called attacks on the president’s handling of the virus crisis “a political hit job.” The president has returned the favor: In a surprise move during his State of the Union address in February, he awarded Mr. Limbaugh, who had recently revealed he had late-stage lung cancer, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. He highlighted Mr. Limbaugh’s charitable work and called him “the greatest fighter and winner that you will ever meet.”

As public health officials urge caution in relaxing stay-at-home restrictions, corporate executives and conservative activists alike are pleading with the president to reopen the economy. Mr. Trump has argued that he alone has the power to override stay-at-home orders imposed at the state level — a claim that legal scholars reject and that he appeared to walk back on Tuesday. Still, many Republican governors are looking directly to the White House to set the tone for a path forward.

by Anonymousreply 24April 15, 2020 4:15 PM

As for his own guidance, Mr. Trump’s preferred media sources have tempered their advocacy. After initially dismissing the severity of the virus, many of Mr. Trump’s go-to talkers on Fox News, including Mr. Hannity, have approached the question with relative delicacy, appearing to take their cues from the president rather than try to proactively urge one path or another. Mr. Limbaugh, conversely, has been a forceful voice from the get-go. Along with casting medical experts like Dr. Anthony S. Fauci as “Hillary Clinton sympathizers,” he has used his enormous platform to call for a rapid return to normal life. “Are we just going to sit by and watch $22 trillion — that’s the value, that’s the sum total of the G.D.P., that’s the U.S. economy — are we just going to sit by here and watch it evaporate?” Mr. Limbaugh said in one segment on March 31. “Because that’s what we’re doing, under the guise of not losing any unnecessary life.” On Monday, Mr. Limbaugh argued that the “shutdown” was “a political effort to get rid of Donald Trump in the election this November” — as well as a Democratic ploy to “keep people fed without them having to go to work” and to “fine them for going to church.” Mr. Limbaugh, a frequent golf partner of Mr. Trump’s in Palm Beach, Fla., has been candid and proud about his direct line to the president. During his show on Friday, Mr. Limbaugh revealed that the president calls him “once a week just to see how I’m doing” and that sometimes Vice President Mike Pence joins. He added that their conversations were only about his health, not policy. (Attempts to reach Mr. Limbaugh through a colleague for this article were unsuccessful.) But in this moment, as Mr. Trump grapples with what he has called “the biggest decision I’ve ever had to make,” Mr. Limbaugh has an unparalleled perch. “A lot of politicians — obviously conservatives — tune into his show as they’re trying to figure out what their point of view should be,” said Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union. Mr. Schlapp noted that with most decisions, the president uses various media sources as a way to “think through questions.” And while the president is listening to his public health advisers in this moment, Mr. Schlapp said, he’s also adhering to the formulas he knows best. “The school nurse doesn’t run the school,” Mr. Schlapp said. “The principal runs the school.” Polling shows that the vast majority of Americans support a national stay-at-home order, but Mr. Limbaugh’s audience — in other words, the president’s base — shares his agitation about jump-starting the economy. His recent shows illustrate the extent to which many of Mr. Trump’s supporters remain suspicious of the public health experts and other officials who have recommended stay-at-home orders and similar guidelines to slow transmission of the virus. “I agree the right person is in office to bring this country out of this,” said a Las Vegas police officer named Marcus who called into Mr. Limbaugh’s show on Monday. “But, you know, when you look at numbers, Rush — the numbers don’t add up as far as, like, you know, the amount of people that die of a normal flu every year and those sort of things. I mean, it’s terrifying how one thing can make us give up our rights so quickly.”

by Anonymousreply 25April 15, 2020 4:21 PM

On Friday, a caller from Prescott, Ariz., wondered if experts were urging the shutdown of the economy as a way to model the potential effects of legislation intended to combat climate change. “Isn’t this kind of like a dry run of the Green New Deal?” he asked. In the midst of everything, Mr. Limbaugh’s listeners unequivocally support the president. On Friday, a New York construction worker named Andy criticized the transformation of Manhattan into a “ghost town,” and said, “There is no better man to be in the White House right now than Donald Trump.” It is the kind of affirmation that helps illuminate radio’s increasing appeal to Mr. Trump. Television indeed plays an outsize role in the president’s assessment of himself and his administration. But with no campaign rallies to look forward to, people close to the president say he feels stifled in his inability to communicate directly with his supporters, complaining that the news media tries to distort his message at his daily briefings. The president may have dropped plans for his own talk radio show. But for Mr. Trump, what Mr. Limbaugh offers is perhaps second best: a taste of the validation he craves, as well as a blueprint for how to make his supporters even happier. “Rush is perfectly confident and competent to play the outsider to the system,” said Kellyanne Conway, the White House counselor. “In that way, he and the president learn from each other.”

Despite noting that a majority of cases outside China have a history of travel to or from Wuhan, he again recommends no measures to curb international travel or trade

Jan 31 – Donald Trump announces travel restrictions on people coming from China

Feb 3 – Dr Tedros gives a speech to the WHO updating on coronavirus, saying there are 17,238 cases in China and 361 deaths – now though to be an under-estimate

He praises Xi Jinping for his individual leadership, and insists that cases outside China ‘can be managed’ if world authorities work together and follow recommendations which include – no ban on travel or trade, supporting countries with weak health systems, investment in vaccines and diagnosis, combating disinformation and urgent reviews of emergency preparedness

Feb 7 – Dr Li Wenliang, a doctor who first reported the existence of coronavirus and was initially silenced by China, dies from the virus

Feb 10 – The WHO’s team of experts arrives in China to assist with the outbreak

Feb 11 – The WHO names the disease caused by the virus COVID-19, saying it avoided including a geographical name because it risks ‘stigmatizing’ people. It says it will not be using the name SARS-CoV-2 because it risks causing ‘unnecessary fear’ by linking it to the 2003 SARS outbreak

Feb 12 – Dr Tedros says the number of new cases being reported in China has ‘stabilised’ but adds that it must be ‘interpreted with extreme caution’ and the outbreak ‘could still go in any direction’

Feb 17 – Dr Tedros begins chairing daily updates on the coronavirus response, with each briefing beginning with an update on the number of infections including from China, which are repeated without caveats

He give an analysis of Chinese data on some 44,000 confirmed cases. He says the data shows that 80 per cent of cases are mild, 14 per cent lead to severe disease, and 2 per cent are fatal. The disease is more severe in older people, with the young largely spared.

He urges world leaders not to ‘squander’ a window of opportunity to get ahead of the virus and prevent it from spreading

Feb 26 – Donald Trump announces a dedicated coronavirus response team, which Mike Pence will lead

Feb 28 – The team of WHO experts delivers its first report on the coronavirus. Among its major findings are that the disease likely came from bats, that it is spread through close contact with infected people and not through the air, and that most common symptoms include fever, dry cough and fatigue

The report praises China’s response as ‘perhaps the most ambitious, agile and aggressive disease containment effort in history’ saying lockdowns were achieved ‘due to the deep commitment of the Chinese people to collective action’ and had achieved a rapid decline in cases

The Chinese government has repeatedly denied suppressing information in the early days, saying it immediately reported the outbreak to the World Health Organization.

'Allegations of a cover-up or lack of transparency in China are groundless,' said foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian at a Thursday press conference.

The documents show that the head of China's National Health Commission, Ma Xiaowei, laid out a grim assessment of the situation in a confidential January 14 teleconference with provincial health officials.

A memo states that the teleconference was held to convey instructions on the coronavirus from President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and Vice Premier Sun Chunlan, but does not specify what those instructions were.

'The epidemic situation is still severe and complex, the most severe challenge since SARS in 2003, and is likely to develop into a major public health event,' the memo cites Ma as saying.

In a faxed statement, the National Health Commission said China had published information on the outbreak in an 'open, transparent, responsible and timely manner,' in accordance with 'important instructions' repeatedly issued by President Xi.

The documents come from an anonymous source in the medical field who did not want to be named for fear of retribution. The AP confirmed the contents with two other sources in public health familiar with the teleconference.

Under a section titled 'sober understanding of the situation,' the memo singled out the case in Thailand, saying that the situation had 'changed significantly' because of the possible spread of the virus abroad.

'All localities must prepare for and respond to a pandemic,' it said.

The National Health Commission distributed a 63-page set of instructions to provincial health officials, obtained by the AP.

The instructions, marked 'not to be publicly disclosed,' ordered health officials nationwide to identify suspected cases, hospitals to open fever clinics, and doctors and nurses to don protective gear.

In public, however, officials continued to downplay the threat.

'The risk of sustained human-to-human transmission is low,' Li Qun, the head of the China CDC's emergency center, told Chinese state television on January 15.

Under the new orders, on January 16 officials in Wuhan and elsewhere finally got CDC-approved testing kits and a green light to start confirming new cases.

Across the country, dozens of reported cases then began to surface, in some cases among patients who were infected earlier but had not yet been tested.

On January 20, President Xi issued his first public comments on the virus, saying the outbreak 'must be taken seriously'. A leading Chinese epidemiologist, Zhong Nanshan, announced for the first time that the virus was transmissible from person to person on national television.

The delay may support accusations by U.S. President Donald Trump that the Chinese government´s secrecy held back the world´s response to the virus. However, even the public announcement on January 20 left the U.S. nearly two months to prepare for the pandemic - time that the U.S. squandered.

Some health experts said Beijing took decisive action given the information available to them.

'They may not have said the right thing, but they were doing the right thing,' said Ray Yip, the retired founding head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's office in China. 'On the 20th, they sounded the alarm for the whole country, which is not an unreasonable delay.'

But others say an earlier warning would have saved lives. If the public had been warned a week earlier to practice social distancing, wear masks and cut back on travel, cases could have been cut by up to two-thirds, one paper later found.

'The earlier you act,' said Los Angeles epidemiologist Zhang, 'the easier you can control the disease.'

However, the number of hospitalisations is down for the first time. The number of serious cases in intensive care has fallen for the seventh consecutive day. 6,524 people have died in care homes, a rise from the 5,600 reported as of Tuesday. However, public health authority head Jerome Salomon said this was due to a delay in reporting over the Easter weekend.

Coronavirus slathers lungs in paint-like slime that slowly suffocates victims

As if images of overflowing morgues and worldwide human suffering weren’t hellish enough, doctors are now offering yet another horrifying visual of coronavirus’ path of destruction.

A thick coat of paint-like mucus coats the lungs of COVID-19 patients, gradually cutting off oxygen supplies. The gruesome discovery, which was revealed in two autopsies of coronavirus-stricken patients, was published in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology.

“The upper and lower airways were . . . lined by a smooth, glistening, pale cream-colored mucosa,” the authors, doctors from Cleveland Clinic, wrote in the study.

Doctors in Oklahoma examined two men who tested positive for coronavirus after they died. One was a 77-year-old man who had symptoms for seven days, but never got treatment or an official diagnosis before he died. Since he passed away without receiving the help of a ventilator, the researchers were able to see what happens when the virus goes unchecked.

They discovered that the slime-like substance in the lung’s air sacs had caused major inflammation in his airways.

“That’s why they can’t breathe because it’s very difficult to get oxygen through those thick walls,” Dr. Sanjay Mukhopadhyay, Director of Pulmonary Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic, told Cleveland19.com.

The other patient, a 42-year-old obese man with pre-existing conditions, also tested positive for COVID-19 after he died. However, doctors found that he actually died of bacterial pneumonia — not from the coronavirus itself. He didn’t have the paint-like coating in his lungs.

The two autopsies were carefully performed by doctors wearing N95 masks, gloves, gowns and other protective gear. The doctors’ study was the first peer-reviewed autopsy report on COVID-19 patients.

In addition to finding the mucous, what they didn’t find was also of note: Doctors have wondered whether the coronavirus causes heart inflammation — but neither of the cases showed that. Experts have also theorized that the virus could cause blood clots. However, there wasn’t evidence of that either.

More autopsies like this one could provide “insights into what is potentially going on in the lungs that is reversible,” Mukhopadhyay said. “Is there anything there that can be treated? Is there anything there that you can use a drug to target?”

Unfortunately, for right now, the answer is no.

“There’s no specific drug that can make that reverse so you really need to treat the virus if you can,” Mukhopadhyay said. “We don’t have a good antiviral drug so far but when we get one, that will be the way to treat that.”

The discovery is the latest in a quickly-moving race to learn more about the disease — including its cure. Most recently, scientists say they have discovered the first evidence of a “significant” mutation of the coronavirus — raising concerns that strides made toward a vaccine so far could become “futile.”

Los Angeles will require face masks for all essential errands

From CNN's Cheri Mossburg

Starting at midnight tonight, Los Angeles residents will be required to wear a face covering or mask while venturing out for essential services, County Supervisor Kathryn Barger told CNN. "“Masks clearly are something that I think is here, and I believe is going to be here for a while,” Barger said."

About sporting events and other mass gatherings, Barger said she believes they are unlikely until a vaccine for coronavirus is available. When it comes to bars and nightclubs, Barger said, “I think that’s way out there.”

Fitness centers and gyms are also probably low on the list for reopening but many construction projects are considered essential and still working within social distancing guidelines.

"Masks definitely are going to be and are a must at all construction sites,” Barger said.

Germany will allow some shops to reopen

From CNN's Nadine Schmidt in Berlin Germany will start to relax nationwide Covid-19 restrictions next week on some shops, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday.

The shops, which must meet certain size requirements, will be allowed to reopen if hygiene plans are followed, Merkel said Wednesday.

Schools will gradually reopen on May 4 with priority given to primary and secondary students in their final years.

At the same time, the country is extending its 'contact ban' in the fight against coronavirus until May 3, Merkel said. Germany's contact ban rules that no more than two people can meet in public, unless people live in the same household.

Large public events are banned until the end of August to prevent mass transmission of the virus.

'Any further relaxation of lockdown will depend on how infection rate develops — we have little room to maneuver," Merkel said.

She went on to say that face masks should be worn in shops and public transport.

New York governor will issue executive order requiring a mask or face covering in public

From CNN's Adrienne Vogt

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he is issuing an executive order that all people in the state must wear a mask or mouth and nose covering in public, whenever they are in a situation where they cannot maintain social distancing of 6 feet or less.

“If you're going to get on public transit, you're going to get on a bus, you're going to get on a subway, you're going to stand on a subway platform, you're going to walk in a neighborhood that is busy, you're going to be on a sidewalk, you're going to pass other people on a sidewalk, you're not going to be able to maintain social distancing, you must wear a mask,” Cuomo said.

There will be a three-day notice period before the order is enforced, allowing New Yorkers to secure masks or face coverings, Cuomo announced Wednesday afternoon.

Local governments should start to enforce it, but there won't be any penalties as of right now, he added.

CDC estimates more than 9,200 health care workers have been infected with coronavirus

From CNN’s Elizabeth Cohen and Dr. Minali Nigam

More than 9,200 health care workers have been infected with Covid-19, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found in its first such assessment, published on Tuesday.

The number is likely an underestimate, since most reports of coronavirus cases don’t note whether the person worked in health care.

“This national surveillance article spotlights the large number of health care personnel already infected with Covid-19,” CDC Principal Deputy Director Dr. Anne Schuchat told CNN. “I think we’ve all learned this virus was a greater threat than we had thought.”

Among the health care workers who had coronavirus, 90% were not hospitalized. There were 184 admissions to the intensive care unit, and 27 people died.

Schuchat added that it is important to focus on making sure that health care workers have the personal protective equipment they need, and that they need to remain vigilant.

Update for Belgium. Our lockdown has been extended until at least 3 May.

Guardian-Belgium’s lockdown will remain almost unchanged until 3 May, after a warning the health system might not cope with a sudden end to restrictions, writes Jennifer Rankin in Brussels. The prime minister, Sophie Wilmès, announced the decision following a recommendation from an expert group, who warned that ending the measures too quickly could overwhelm hospitals. “We wish to warn against too rapid and too-little-thought-through relaxation of the mesures,” said the group’s report seen by state broadcaster RTBF. “It can only take place within the framework of a long-term strategy clearly communicated.” The group said its modelling showed a risk that too-rapid easing of measures could overwhelm the healthcare system, where pressure is already “high”. From the 20 April there will be a gentle easing of a few measures. Garden centres and DIY shops will join supermarkets and pharmacies on the list of businesses permitted to open. Residents in care homes for older and disabled people will also be allowed visits from one single member of their family, as long as neither have shown symptoms of the virus in the previous two weeks. But schools will remain closed. Belgium has been one of the hardest-hit countries in Europe, with one of the highest per-capita death rates. According to the latest official data, 4,440 people have lost their lives to the virus. However unlike the UK, Belgium includes in the total deaths in care homes, which account for 49% of victims. Belgium also includes people suspected of having died from coronavirus, even when no conclusive test has taken place, which may also elevate the numbers. The number of new daily arrivals in hospital has been declining since the end of March, with the latest figures also showing a slight decrease in people in intensive care. On Wednesday Belgium recorded a significant jump of 2,454 cases taking the total to 33,573. This reflects a big expansion in testing in care homes and not an increase in transmission rates, stated the national crisis centre, which compiles the statistics.

Short of a vaccine how can any of this end nicely? It took me a long while to figure out what flattening the curve meant. CDC releases demographics on coronavirus cases in the US

From CNN's Amanda Watts

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released “demographic characteristics of Covid-19 cases in the United States” on its website Wednesday.

The newly published information details the race and age of coronavirus cases in the United States as of April 14. On Wednesday, the CDC reported more than 605,000 cases of coronavirus, but the demographics are only listed for 398,852 cases.

A majority of the cases, in some instances, up to 85%, the CDC lists “unspecified” or “missing” as the age and race.

Here are some of the findings from the CDC:

Of the cases, a majority are in the 18-44 and 45-64 age ranges

73% of the cases fall between 18-64

90,619 cases are those over the age of 65

80% of the cases listed under white are over the age of 65

34% of the cases listed in the 45-64 age group are black or African American

San Francisco launched contact tracing program

From CNN's Stella Chan

San Francisco is unveiling a program to streamline coronavirus contact tracing as part of its response to the pandemic.

The partnership with the city, public health department, University of California, San Francisco, and DIMAGI, a company working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is an effort to digitize workflow and monitoring.

“This collaboration serves as a powerful example of what we can achieve when we bring together the best minds across our public health system, with the City, academic medical centers and community partners,” said Dr. Sam Hawgood, chancellor of UCSF. “UCSF and our county health partners have worked together on every major health crisis our city has faced, reaching back to 1873, including caring for victims of the 1906 earthquake, cholera, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. We are here to serve patients during the Covid pandemic and will be here to help our city rebuild on the other side.”

Contacts will receive text messages or phone calls monitoring their health during a 14-day period. The program will also allow them to self-report and public health officials will be immediately alerted.

Several posters here are putting a lot of faith in a vaccine but I am not too hopeful. No vaccine has ever been created for other corona viruses before. Sure, progress was made and studies were stopped, etc., etc., But this is a fact. Even if a vaccine is found tomorrow, it will not stop the current path which is already well underway. Most estimates, conclude that a possible vaccine is many months away. Just today, a CEO of a leading company said that multiple vaccines would be needed to meet the overwhelming demand throughout the world. If we can not effectively execute testing, even in developed countries, why would the distribution of a vaccine be any different?

Other posters have also put their faith in the "herd" immunity. believing that we are almost at a point where the spread will slow as many people have already been infected. Unfortunately, we are very, very far from this as the vast majority of the world has not yet been infected. Moreover, there are lingering doubts about reinfections and the period that someone could potentially be safe from danger.

Like many of you, I want to be hopeful about the future. But the cold hard truth keeps splashing water all over my face.

R115, I’m sorry. A plant that closes and leaves people out of work can be devastating in a small town where there can be few other alternatives. Especially now.

I wonder if some people will be driven out of small towns looking for whatever work they can find. I was on a prepper website the other day. Normally preppers suggest living in a small town is ideal, but not now.

One person mentioned that you couldn’t walk down the street in a really small town without being noticed, especially if you’re a stranger. They said people on Nextdoor will communicate with each other about “who is that suspicious stranger?” and get really paranoid. I know that’s true, the locals on Nextdoor in my town are doing that now and I’m not even in a small town. Wait a few months when people are broke and desperate. Crime is going to go up. This is why other countries are paying out a monthly stipend, not a one time payment.

That kind of snoopiness is bad news if you’re a prepper and don’t want people to know what’s in your house or what your security arrangements are.

by Anonymousreply 120April 15, 2020 10:05 PM

BREAKING: Initial reports are coming out from the science community that this “novel” version of Coronavirus was actually discovered in 1970. It was found in the DNA of a thought-to-be extinct animal which was found in the English countryside. There might have been some interaction between the specimen and scientists investigating the finding at which the virus was spread to humans. It remained dormant for many decades, completely unnoticed by anyone until this latest mutation. Scientists are currently looking for the creature and its handler who faked its death and escaped many years ago.

The truth is that NOBODY wants to face the truth. And that is that massive Pandemics like this one: 1) Last a godammed time and 2) Change mother- fucking civilization. We all need to pull our heads out of our collective asses and get some historical perspective. The Black plague changed the Continent of Europe on and off for several hundred years. YES. Millions died during that time- not all at once- but enough to change maps, kingdoms, and certainly rulers. As terrifying as that concept seems, some good came out of it- such as the radical shift of economic forces that may not have occured otherwise. Just like now, manual labourers who were serfs during the middle ages were at greater risk doing their jobs than the rich merchants and nobility who could afford to sequester themselves- and started dropping like flys. Inevitably, the shortage of these workers made their skills all the more valuable, allowing for a huge shift in the power base for the first time, where workers were able to demand more equality and actual wages. Sound familiar? Now I'm not suggesting that with today's modern medicine and scientists around the world racing to develop a vaccine that we all look forward to the collapse of Western Civilization over the next millennia- but that Orange buffoon and his Wallstreet lackeys need to start fucking thinking again if they really think they in ANY way control the outcome of one of the Nastiest viruses to come around the human block in a LONG TIME. Chances are this bitch is our new Seasonal Cold only 10X deadlier- and I don't forsee mankind giving a shit what our GDP while we struggle to survive over the next few years. History says we're about to go through a Revolution, baby.

Here’s a thing that really scares me. The reports I read often report the number sick, the number recovered, and the number dead. The number remaining sick is not usually reported, you have to figure it mathematically from the other numbers, but it’s always HUGE. I don’t want to linger being sick. It’s never mentioned but these people must be out there somewhere.

Example at link, with 1.4 million still sick at this point. Is that even possible?

They’d have better luck figuring out the equivalent of Tamiflu and giving it to sick people right away so they never get worse.

Waiting until somebody is on death’s door, which is what they’re doing now, causes a higher rate of bad outcomes. If somebody is already diabetic, obese or whatever, and they arrive in the emergency room unable to breathe, they’ve probably been sick for weeks.

To give an idea of where we stand, retail-wise, Best Buy today announced furloughing 51,000 part-time workers, but keeping full-time employees working. They have kept their staff working with only curbside service and not allowing the public in the stores.

In late February and early March sales held up as people who were sent home to work bought new computers and other items to set up their offices. After that wave, sales dropped and the company had to retreat. This gives us some insight as to what this giant retailer sees in their crystal ball. Taking shackles off US consumers and workers and putting them back in place will not happen in the near future, nor will new work uniforms (masks and gloves) with the company logo be soon in coming.

The way computers, TVs and other modern electronics are displayed and presented to customers will also be a challenge. Keeping open displays of items free of germs as customers move through the stores, touching and picking them up, will require a new concept, partly based on lawyer recommendations. And how will a smiley salesperson get you in the mood to buy something when visible smiles are not allowed?

It will take time to think through and develop a new style of business for some, as we move into the still undefined new normal.

Incidentally, the semi-credible theory isn't that c19 was created as a bio-weapon... it's that it was cultivated to be a defanged SARS virus that could be used to deliberately infect people (the way cowpox was used to innoculate for smallpox) & provide immunity against the "real" SARS virus... then went horribly wrong & just created asymptomatic carriers.

If nothing else, the theory vividly illustrates the real danger of trying to cultivate live viruses as vaccines... one slip, and you could easily unleash the very problem you're trying to prevent.

Going by the figures at R166, it seems inevitable there will be millions of cases.

In NY, they seem to be on a very high plateau for now. That’s happened a few other places as well. If the max number of deaths a day is 780, and it fluctuates between 780-790 every day, imagine where we’ll be in another month. Same thing will happen in many different cities. And some cities are on their way up the curve now. The next thing will be red states and places where people just had to get together for Easter having outbreaks in a week or two. There’s a delayed effect coming up.

Australia just announced lockdown to continue for another 4 weeks and to be reviewed after that. Cases are now less than 50 a day (still mostly from people returning from overseas) and anybody with any cold/flu symptoms (sore or scratchy throat, cough, fever, runny nose) should present themselves for testing.

by Anonymousreply 173April 16, 2020 6:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 174April 16, 2020 6:23 AM

R170 that's only if we maintain social distancing. If people start to loosen up with that, whether certain mayors/governors or random citizens, then the numbers will definitely exceed the estimated amounts. I think 65,000 is sadly the "best case scenario"

by Anonymousreply 175April 16, 2020 6:55 AM

another way in which even coverage of a pandemic is politicized...I'm sure many of you have heard today that reports are saying estimates of deaths so far could have been underreported

well some right wing "journalists" are now starting to say the number of deaths are being "over reported" and that hospitals are telling doctors to list people who died as dying from coronavirus whether it was proven or not.

Lots of sunshine in Florida. Vitamin D boosts immunity. It's the reason, in part, why flu usually dies out in summer. It's also one of the reasons black people are suffering more severe symptoms and higher deaths. Their skin doesn't make Vitamin D as easily when exposed to the sun. Pollution in China = less sun exposure, less Vita D.

Listen to good old Dr. John Campbell, folks. Take your daily dose of vitamin D.

Yeah, something is off. The number of deaths was starting to decrease, suggesting that we had passed the peak, but now, over the past couple of days, it has increased sharply, with over 2,000 deaths a day. According to the IMHE projections, the number of new deaths should have decreased to about 1,900 yesterday (April 15). Actually, there were over 2,500 deaths. IMHE is now projecting about 69,000 deaths in total. I'm guessing they'll raise that number the next time they update their projections. And R175 is correct. All of these estimates assume continued social distancing. If Trump and some of the governors follow through on their promises to open things up in the next few weeks, the number of deaths will be much higher.

Don't keep your eye on a vaccine, watch for an effective treatment. That will probably come first, and once we have that, we can start going back to normal.

Once we have antibody testing, well probably see that the death rate is below 1%. This isn't SARS, it's just way more widespread.

More questions than answers in Spain

Guardian-Spain recorded 5,183 new cases of the virus between Wednesday and Thursday, bringing its total number of confirmed cases to 182,816 - a rise of 2.9% on the previous 24 hours, writes Sam Jones in Madrid. Over recent days, the increase in new cases has been holding at around 3% a day, well down from a daily average of 12% at the end of March and 20% in mid-March. To date, Spain has recorded 19,130 deaths. Questions remain over Spain’s official figures because of the way it tests and reports. So far, the official figures from the health ministry have been based only on deaths of people who have tested positive for the coronavirus. As the health minister, Salvado Illa, put it recently: “Anyone who’s been positively diagnosed with the coronavirus and who dies is a person who’s counted as a victim of the coronavirus.” A lot of people are likely to have died from the virus without having been tested, meaning their deaths do not figure in the official count. This is particularly the case in care homes, where thousands of people have died untested, but showed symptoms consistent with the coronavirus. According to figures analysed by El País, at least 11,600 people have died of the virus - or displaying symptoms associated with it - in Spanish care homes. Those deaths would account for almost two-thirds of the nationwide fatalities. On Wednesday, Catalonia’s regional government changed the way it counted coronavirus deaths after asking for data from funeral companies. It now puts the region’s death toll - in hospitals, homes and care homes - at 7,097. However, the rise in the death toll has not been factored into Thursday’s figure from the Spanish health ministry, which puts the regional death toll at 3,855.

by Anonymousreply 198April 16, 2020 2:30 PM

On another message board, I saw a woman insisting that we are all sheep for following through with the physical distancing measures and not questioning all of the numbers we are being given. She was saying that plenty of doctors around the world are denouncing the shutdowns because what we need to do is be exposed to this so we can naturally build immunity. She was also saying that our civil liberties were being violated by the government and that people were being blindly led astray.

.... I'm genuinely baffled as to how people can believe this. I don't see how it could possibly benefit anybody to exaggerate about the impact this virus has had. Why would anybody in the government want to shut down the economy? Why would so many medical professionals inflate the importance of this particular virus if it was really only comparable to your typical flu?

...I'm trying to understand how people can take such a different stance on this situation. It's too easy to just say "Well they're all Republicans who are suspicious of anything liberal related". But it seems like there's this very sharp divide between people who believe the facts we're being given and those who completely disagree and have a bunch of conspiracy theories.

Can anyone please explain the logic behind these arguments that covid-19 is just the flu and that our economy and businesses are being shut down deliberately for some reason other than to stop it's spread?

by Anonymousreply 199April 16, 2020 2:30 PM

R174 Some of it was luck but some of it related to being prepared. Australia has always had very good bio-security laws (ditto New Zealand) to prevent diseases affecting animals and native flora from entering the country. As soon as Wuhan went into lockdown the Government sprang into action (actually they probably did before that).

They had daily public briefings and declared COVID 19 a pandemic about two weeks before the WHO did. Australia also has excellent contact tracing and tracking. There have been some fuck ups but overall full credit to the Federal and State Governments in their overall handling of the virus. Also the Government was NEVER in denial of what was likely to happen to have always been frank and open with the communications to the public.

Another thing that helped Australia was the devastating bushfires in 2019. International tourism went downhill due to the bushfires so that helped keep a lot of potential carriers away. Something like two third of Australia's cases have been from Australians (and a very small number of international tourists) returning from other parts of the globe. The biggest numbers have come from cruise ships, the US, the UK and Europe.

Also, Australia had and still has one of the highest testing rate per capita in the world - and its free. We are now down to very few cases (mainly Australians returning home - foreign nationals are banned from entering the country) and if it wasn't for two clusters that emerged (one in a Sydney nursing home and one in a hospital in north west Tasmania) we'd have even less - but these things can and do happen and lockdowns, contact tracing etc has been quick to move into action to stub those out.

Our community transmissions of an unknown nature come in at 10% and testing is now been ramped up even more. Anybody with a cough, fever, sore throat even a tickle in the throat is being encouraged to get tested.

National lockdown has been extended for another 4 weeks. The Government is talking about 'suppression' of the virus but they are also saying 'elimination' could be a by-product of suppression. I actually think they are going for elimination but don't want to promise that because you can't. Even if Australia (& New Zealand) get rid of the virus we will have to be on our guard for it to possibly remerge. Shipping of freight by air and sea is still happening and is not going to stop and Australians overseas will continue to find there way home (though they are forced into 14 days quarantine into hotels guarded by police and/or the army).

The attitude of the Government is even if the virus is eliminated the war against it is not over until there is a vaccine.

[quote] I'm genuinely baffled as to how people can believe this.

Don't be. This virus is new and it is moving rapidly. No one knows what to believe. Even the best experts know so little about this virus, how it spreads, how it can manifest illness in the human body and how to treat it. There is LOTS of ambiguity still in most aspects of this pandemic. And in all of that ambiguity comes a wealth of opportunity to see things differently.

We are still on our own to think carefully and act prudently. People are being affected by this drastically. As individuals. As a society. Medically. Socially. Economically. Of course there will be different points of view and differing concerns all leading us to strongly discrepant conclusions. And there is so little conclusive data, because in many aspects of this, it is too early to draw conclusions. Nothing is concluded!

Today, there is little major controversy about how to manage all this these matters as they pertain to HIV. But in 1983 and for many years to follow, it was just chaos of every sort. And some aspects are just too big and complex to produce only one conclusion. As a public health measure, PrEP is terrific. It brings the number of new infections down dramatically. But is it right for you, personally? Depends. You have to talk with your doctor about that and be an appropriate candidate for the drug. Not everyone is. And once it begins, not everyone responds to it equally.

There are no easy clear answers yet to Covid-19. People will do what they can do get by. But we are not all going to agree.

R178 I have great admiration for Dr. John Campbell - I watch his updates every day and his very measured and informed. But I sort of doubt the Vitamin D theory. I probably disagree with him on that because he keeps mentioning Australia and that may be why Australia has not been that affected. Fair enough comments from him but living in Australia I also know that a large percentage of the population of low Vitamin D.

Most people try to avoid the sun to avoid getting skin cancer. And the lower death rates per cases in Australia are due to the fact that is has mainly been younger people who have contacted the virus. Most of the people who have died are 60 and over and caught it from cruise ships, are in nursing homes or were undergoing cancer treatment. If you look at Australia's death figures only in relation to 60+ the death ratio is much much higher. When the highest number of positive tests are in their 20s and 30s with no deaths in that age group it sort of gives an illusion of overall low death rates but if more older people had contracted the disease Australia's death rate would be much higher.

Some coronavirus stimulus checks were deposited into wrong bank accounts

Some Americans say they haven’t gotten their coronavirus stimulus checks because the feds sent the money to the wrong bank accounts.

Several taxpayers tried to check the status of their payments on the Internal Revenue Service’s website only to discover the agency put the money in accounts they didn’t recognize or no longer use.

“My stimulus got sent to the wrong account and it won’t let me update it despite you guys saying we could. I guess I’ll just get evicted,” one Twitter user griped to the IRS on Wednesday.

“You sent my check to the wrong account number!” Lydia Cooper tweeted Thursday morning. “I’ve had my account for years. Bank says there’s nothing they can do.”

The problem appeared when people logged into the IRS’s “Get My Payment” app, which encountered glitches Wednesday as millions of Americans waited for their share of the $2.2 trillion stimulus bill Congress passed last month.

The app told some taxpayers their money had been deposited and displayed the last four digits of the account number where it was sent. But some users said the account number was outdated or just plain wrong.

“You’re jubilant because you’ve been waiting to get that money. And you look down and the bank account number is not even close,” Chris Rodriguez of Lansing, Michigan, told USA Today, which reported on the problem Wednesday.

IRS spokeswoman Jodie Reynolds told the paper she had not heard about checks being sent to the wrong accounts, but she indicated the money should be rejected by banks and returned to the IRS if that has indeed happened.

“The payment isn’t going to bounce back and just sit here,” Reynolds told USA Today. “We will turn around and cut them a paper check and make sure they get their money.”

The IRS said 9.8 million people had checked the status of their stimulus check and 1.6 million had submitted direct deposit information by late Wednesday afternoon as its “Get My Payment” tool ran at “record volumes.”

Patients with no symptoms caused 44% of coronavirus cases: study

Nearly half of coronavirus cases were transmitted by patients who initially showed no symptoms, according to a new study.

Researchers said that COVID-19 patients admitted to China’s Guangzhou Eighth People’s Hospital were likely contagious for days before the onset of symptoms, according to a report published Wednesday in Nature.

The study collected throat swabs for 32 days after symptoms began for 94 patients admitted from January 21 through February 14.

“We observed the highest viral load in throat swabs at the time of symptom onset, and inferred that infectiousness peaked on or before symptom onset,” researchers wrote.

Referencing other studies on the spread of the virus, researchers said it’s likely that the patients were contagious for two to three days before their symptoms began, according to the report.

“This indicates that a significant portion of transmission may have occurred before infected persons have developed symptoms,” researchers wrote.

Through using modeling systems, the researchers estimated that 44% of cases were transmitted during the presymptomatic stage.

“With a substantial proportion of presymptomatic transmission, measures such as enhanced personal hygiene and social distancing for all would likely be the key instruments for community disease control,” the authors concluded.

Emirates airline passengers undergo coronavirus blood tests before boarding

Emirates airline has begun administering coronavirus antibody blood tests on passengers before they board its flights at Dubai International Airport, according to a report.

The airline claims to be the world’s first carrier to conduct such rapid blood tests, the first of which took place Wednesday on passengers boarding a flight to Tunisia, CNN reported.

The results of the tests, which were conducted by the Dubai Health Authority, were available within 10 minutes.

“We are working on plans to scale up testing capabilities in the future and extend it to other flights,” airline Chief Operating Officer Adel Al Redha told CNN in a statement.

“This will enable us to conduct on-site tests and provide immediate confirmation for Emirates passengers traveling to countries that require COVID-19 test certificates,” he added.

Emirates has not indicated whether passengers would be refused boarding based on the results of the serology tests.

The tests — which aren’t meant to diagnose active infections — check for antibodies, or proteins, in the immune system. Their presence means a person has been exposed to the virus and developed antibodies against it.

Meanwhile, Etihad Airways, also in the United Arab Emirates, has announced that self-service kiosks will be set up at its airport in Abu Dhabi to help identify travelers with medical conditions, possibly including the early stages of COVID-19, according to CNN.

The technology is designed to monitor a passenger’s temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate.

Elon Musk's promised ventilators never delivered to California hospitals

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said last month he had obtained more than 1,000 ventilators to help California hospitals treating patients infected with the coronavirus, an effort Gov. Gavin Newsom hailed as “heroic.”

Now, more than three weeks later, the governor’s office says none of the promised ventilators have been received by hospitals.

At a March 23 news conference, Newsom said the devices, which can provide life-saving support to patients infected with the virus, had already arrived in Los Angeles and were on their way to hospitals in need.

"I told you a few days ago that he was likely to have 1,000 ventilators this week," Newsom said. "They've arrived in Los Angeles, and Elon Musk is already working with hospital association and others to get those ventilators out. It’s a heroic effort."

Shortly after the dramatic announcement, Musk said in a tweet: “China had an oversupply, so we bought 1255 FDA-approved ResMed, Philips & Medtronic ventilators on Friday night & airshipped them to LA. If you want a free ventilator installed, please let us know!”

But despite the claims, none of the ventilators promised by Musk have been delivered to hospitals.

“Elon Musk and his team told the state that he had procured ventilators and wanted to distribute them directly to hospitals with shortages,” a spokesperson for the California governor’s Office of Emergency Services told CNN on Wednesday. “The Administration is communicating every day with hospitals across the state about their ventilator supply and to date we have not heard of any hospital system that has received a ventilator directly from Tesla or Musk.”

Spokespersons for Tesla did not return CNN requests for comment. The news was first reported by the Sacramento Bee.

Some background: Major US companies like Ford and Apple have also announced plans to produce ventilators and donate face masks for health care workers treating patients infected with the virus.

Last week, Newsom reassured residents that California now has enough ventilators to meet its projected needs, after some questioned his decision to lend 500 machines to other states in crisis.

Spain doubles daily coronavirus tests and defends counting method (CNN)

Spain has doubled the number of daily coronavirus tests to 40,000, resulting in an increase of figures since the start of the pandemic, said Fernando Simón, the country’s director of health emergencies.

Even though the total overall number is up because of expanded testing, Simón said, the number of active cases is in decline, at less than 1%, Spain’s Health Ministry records show.

He said this is due “in part to increased testing, including the rapid tests that look for antibodies, and for the even more reliable PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests, which look for the virus itself."

Simon called the testing an “enormous effort across the nation to locate the virus.”

Minister of Health Salvador Illa has said he wants to increase testing numbers to 50,000 a day.

By the numbers: Spain continues to see a “progressive decline in the number of new hospitalized people and new intensive care admissions” Simon said, citing 1,003 new hospital admissions, “a 1.7% increase with respect to the previous day."

Simon said 79 new cases were admitted into intensive care units, ICUs, “a 1.4% increase with respect to the day before.”

When asked why the large increase of deaths and infections reported by Catalan regional health authorities late Wednesday were not included in the national count, Simon defended the Spanish Health Ministry’s figures, saying “we are counting all those infected who die and have a test in which coronavirus is detected."

Some context: The Spanish region of Catalonia may have twice the official number of deaths reported so far by the Spanish government, according to new data from the region’s department of health.

“We have a lot to discuss with them [Catalan Health Department] still about what the real significance of these new cases coming from the funerary services or from the elderly people’s homes is, because we don’t have certainty and we need to evaluate with them whether they had a previous diagnostic coronavirus confirmation or not,” Simon added.

Spanish government health authorities have repeatedly said their counting methods are in line with international protocols, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Center for Disease Control (ECDC).

Doctor says the search for coronavirus treatments is jumbled From CNN's Adrienne Vogt

The scramble to find successful treatments to fight coronavirus is disjointed and chaotic, according to Dr. Derek Angus, chair of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

“No,” Angus told CNN when asked if experts have any sense of what has been working in clinical trials. “Look, that sounds depressing to say I don't know.”

“There are two million people already who have this disease. If even one in 10 has been able to participate in a trial, we could have gone through about 100 different drugs by now and known definitively which ones worked or not. But as it is, at this point … we have no idea which one is the best,” Angus said.

Angus, who is leading a Covid-19 trial that’s testing multiple therapies, said the disorder is at a global level and noted that there aren’t enough tests right now to practice effective public health.

“We've got plenty of ideas about what drugs might work, but we need to test these drugs in trials. Otherwise, we're bungling along not knowing what works,” Angus said. There are 94 trials registered for testing the drug hydroxychloroquine, he added.

“I’ve never heard of any drug needing 94 separate trials in the same disease,” he said. “If you're trying to do lots of little trials, that's not as efficient or as useful as trying to do large coordinated trials. We've had over two million confirmed cases of Covid-19, mainly in North America and Europe. And yet, barely more than a few thousand of these two million patients have been enrolled in clinical trials."

R212. Glad to hear that Spain is conducting more tests but their official numbers are bullshit compared to France and Belgium who are including probable cases in their counts. A snippet from a Guardian post mentioned earlier.:

"....So far, the official figures from the health ministry have been based only on deaths of people who have tested positive for the coronavirus. As the health minister, Salvado Illa, put it recently: “Anyone who’s been positively diagnosed with the coronavirus and who dies is a person who’s counted as a victim of the coronavirus.” A lot of people are likely to have died from the virus without having been tested, meaning their deaths do not figure in the official count."

There are many thousands of people who are not being properly counted

r183, Ivermectin is available as an official FDA-approved "human" drug as well... Google "Stromectol".

The article you linked is semi-hysterically warning against taking a "veterinary" formulation... and personally, I disagree vehemently with most of its arguments (or can pick them apart & refute most of them line by line). The FDA's whole argument can be summarized as, "veterinary products aren't approved for human use, and aren't necessarily formulated in ways to make them unappealing to children (ie, bad-tasting)".

Taste is a big issue for the FDA... and a major reason for recent battles between the FDA & pharmacies that compound APIs into tasty meds for cats. The FDA *wants* medicine to taste bad... and the more dangerous it would be to small kids, the more disgusting it wants it to taste & the larger it wants the tablets to be. Cat owners have precisely the opposite needs... getting a cat to swallow a pill is a mutually-traumatic nightmare, and cats will spit out foul-tasting liquid. That doesn't mean cat-formulated meds (for example) are HARMFUL, it just means they don't comply with FDA rules for human meds.

Seriously. Read the hysterical articles, and notice that 99% of their warnings are just appeals to authority, strawman, and bureaucracy.

Also, note that everyone's favorite example ("fish tank" chloroquine phosphate) is a different chemical from hydroxychloroquine, kind of like the way d-methamphetamine and L-methamphetamine are. The "d" form is highly psychoactive, but has minimal effect on heart rate & the PNS. The "L" form is precisely the opposite... if you tried taking enough to induce euphoria, you'd probably end up dead from a heart attack first. In contrast, "Ivermectin" (in oral forms, at least) is all the same drug. It's just a matter of drug-per-milliliter/miligram of vehicle, and official blessing. You can't blindly assume they're directly identical for dosing, but it's intellectually dishonest to pretend equine Ivermectin worming paste is some deadly alien poison, because it's not.

People who understand that the world isn't black and white, and has shades of gray, know this. Everyone else runs around like clucking hens spewing official mantras & blindly deferring to authority without actually fact-checking & critical thought of their own.

It depends. What dosage are you now taking? You probably should not go too much above 4,000 IU (international units) a day. You should also consider taking Vitamin D along with magnesium and Vitamin K, to avoid any problems with plaque buildup. It helps to get a Vitamin D blood test at some point to see what your level is and whether you are hitting or missing the mark.

I take about 4,400 IUs a day and I’m usually in the middle of what is considered the ideal level between 40 and 80 ng/mL.

R238 Read the piece at R187. Masks help. There is no one 100% effective fool-proof preventative. Risk reducing methods work together cumulatively.

[quote] I’ve seen many articles that totally miss the mark on the benefits of masks. Many say things like “good to keep your germs from hurting others, but not very good at protecting yourself” or “we tested 1,2,3 layers of different materials and found x% of particles the size of viruses go right through, therefore these are better than those”. The testing that matters is way too difficult for anyone to actually do. It would test 1,000 people who wear “certified masks” versus 1,000 who wear homemade masks of different types and see what percentage of each get infected and what percent get hospitalized or die. Proving that virus-sized particles “go right through” old bandannas is mostly irrelevant if the most likely way you will get sick is by hand-face touching, where a bandanna might be 98% effective; or by virus-laden water droplets where the bandanna folded 4-times might be 90% effective; even though it is relatively poor at blocking dry, individual virus organisms, which is the least likely way you will get sick.

UK calls for review of China's handling of coronavirus outbreak

From CNN's Nada Bashir in London

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has called for a "deep dive" review of China's early handling of the coronavirus outbreak, telling reporters on Thursday that his government will have to "ask the hard questions" on how the pandemic came about.

"In relation to your question on China, I think there needs to be a very, very deep dive after-the-event review of the lessons, including of the outbreak of the virus," Raab said during a news briefing, adding that the British government cannot "flinch" away from this responsibility.

"There is no doubt that we cannot have business as usual after this crisis and we will have to ask the hard questions about how it came about and how it could have been stopped earlier," Raab added.

The foreign secretary cautioned that while there remain questions about the initial outbreak of the virus, the UK government "ought to look at all sides" in a "balanced way" that is driven by scientific evidence.

"One thing that coronavirus has taught us is the value and the importance of international cooperation," Raab said.

"We had very good cooperation with the Chinese in relation to the return of UK nationals at the outset from Wuhan, as we have on the procurement of things that we need," he said.

Asthma and sedative drugs added to FDA drug shortage list during coronavirus pandemic

From CNN's Amanda Watts

US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn said the sedative drug Propofol has been added to the FDA’s drug shortage list due to its avid use for ventilated patients.

Speaking today at a Washington Post Live event, Hahn also said some asthma drugs are now on the drug shortage list.

Hahn said there are a multitude of factors that lead to a drug being added to the drug shortage list.

“In this case, for the asthma drugs and the sedative drugs, it really is about increased demand," he said.

The drug Propofol “has been off and on our drug shortage list for quite some time, but most recently got added back on because of the issues around ventilated patients,” Hahn explained.

The FDA will continue to work with manufacturers to increase supply, as well as expediting applications for the approval of new drugs. They are also looking at alternatives they can recommend to health care professionals, Hahn said.

Trump is announcing the plan to reopen tonight at 6. I agree that we need to get moving again but I have zero faith that trump and his task force can come up with a way to minimize risk. Unfortunately I think the choice has been made to just let the states decide if they want to sacrifice 1-2% of the population or not.

Trump is so fucked for re-election it isn’t even funny.

I've not seen much about it in the press today, but yesterday CNN said that scientists are now predicting that a vaccine won't come until next Spring. If that's true, then we have another full year of this.

I have a question about Vitamin D3. I usually buy them at the drugstore as a food supplement and on the package it says "1000 IU per day". 1 tablet has 25µg and the recommendation is 1-2 tablets per day. So is1 tablet 500 and if I take two I have the recommended 1000 IU per day or is 1 tablet 1000 IU? Does anyone know?

I have only been out for short trips to the grocery store in the evening these past couple of weeks so I probably need a lot extra D3. Some people recommend a even higher dosis of 2000 or 3000 IU per day. How much should we take? I have seen recommendations from 800 to up to 10.000 IU per day.

R175, some of these figures, or most of them, seem to assume that the first wave is all there is. They loosen the restrictions and here comes the second wave. Governors will have to issue stay at home orders again, maybe without federal funding.

This is all about money. The federal government just needs to suspend the use of money for a year. Everything that’s a essential necessity is free, including food, utilities and rent. Mortgages are suspended for the duration. Everything that’s not essential still costs money. Problem solved. Even if only paying utilities was suspended for a year, it would help everyone a lot. Including building owners.

What’s the worst case scenario? They’re predicting something like 95% are eventually going to get it. So the worst case is corporations throw enough of a fit that everything opens up. They think around 15-20% already have been exposed in high density cities like NY. Second wave, maybe 80% are exposed all at once, hospital beds and ventilators are used up. So around 20% of those get the virus and die with no hospital care.

On the plus side, businesses are really happy because within a year there’s a huge population die off. Then presumably we go forward without the expensive burden of Mom and Dad. Of course, what if immunity doesn’t last? Then civilization is over, but businesses are really happy because they find a way to nickel and dime people all the way to the casket. I tend to believe in the end businesses will get their way, even if everyone dies. They always win.

Look at what happened at Smithfield meat packing plants. They gave the employees a $500 bonus to come back, they came back, now hundreds have Coronavirus and they’re probably going to have to sterilize the plant and machinery somehow. And imagine the lawsuits they’re going to get from the widows and orphans.

That’s a microcosm of what’s going to happen in the U.S. if they open up too soon. People come back, get sick, some die, and they all go out in the community and infect anybody they can reach.

About red states opening up too soon to please Trump, it’s Smithfield 2.0. Open up, a bunch of old and high risk people die. They don’t vote for Trump because they’re dead. Or their moronic relatives finally wake up and realize Trump killed Grandma.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a very large percentage of red state Trumpers die. Obese, diabetic, and against “having their liberty taken away” by being told to wear a mask. Unfortunately they’re going to take a lot of other people with them.

Situation in South Dakota is quickly escalating. Can't post link.

South Dakota, one of sparsest populated states in the country, has seen its number of COVID-19 cases increase by double-digit percentage points every day in April.

The Mount Rushmore State reported 180 new cases of the virus Wednesday, an 18 percentage point increase from the previous day, bringing its total number of cases to more than 1,000, according to data tracked by The Hill based on state data.

The national average is 194 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people and overall as a state, South Dakota is below that at about 132 cases per 100,000 people.

ADVERTISEMENT But Minnehaha County, home to the state's largest city — Sioux Falls — has more than 483 cases per 100,000 people, and a total of more than 1,000 cases according to state data.

Pork processor Smithfield Food in Sioux Falls has reported more than 500 employees as having tested positive for the virus.

Gov. Kristi Noem (R) has encouraged residents to stay home and avoid large gatherings but has resisted issuing a hard stay-at-home order, a move that has raised eyebrows and drawn criticism from around the country. However, Noem on Wednesday remained optimistic that the state could handle the surge of cases.

"We have cut our peak, and that's a good thing, and that is encouraging to all of us," Noem said at a press conference, NBC News reported. "Our health care system can handle what's coming at us."

Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken (R) has requested that Noem issue a stay-at-home order for the city's metro area, but Noem dismissed his request Tuesday, saying: "I don't believe it's appropriate considering the data, the facts and the science that we have."

Coronavirus: 'Undocumented explosion' spreads around Brazil

At Vila Formosa, Latin America's biggest cemetery, workers say they are turning over more graves than usual.

Workers at the cemetery in the Brazilian city of São Paulo say on an average day they bury about 40 people, but the weekend before last, that figure was about 60.

"The municipality bought 5,000 body bags and they're hiring more people, too," says gravedigger Manuel Pereira. But they're bracing themselves for the weeks ahead.

Brazil's health ministry says Covid-19 is not expected to peak in the country until May or June.

Sweeping testing of the entire crew of the coronavirus-stricken U.S. aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt may have revealed a clue about the pandemic: The majority of the positive cases so far are among sailors who are asymptomatic, officials say.

The Navy’s testing of the entire 4,800-member crew of the aircraft carrier - which is about 94% complete - was an extraordinary move in a headline-grabbing case that has already led to the firing of the carrier’s captain and the resignation of the Navy’s top civilian official.

Has anyone that posted here that they had the virus come back and posted again? There were a few of them and I hope they are okay.

I posted several times in previous threads about my family member who worked at Costco in Brooklyn. He got the virus. The thing is relentless and it is not something you want to catch. In the beginning he just didn't feel well. Then he got a fever then chills. The fever went up and down from 101 to 102 for 10 days. His entire body ached. Then he got the cough and his lungs hurt, some days more than others and it was a little hard to breath. He got bad headaches and was worried they would trigger his migraines (which they didn't, thankfully). He stopped eating. On about day 12 I convinced him that he was letting the virus win and by not eating he had no fuel in his body to fight the virus. He started eating chicken soup that day and then started to get better. He has not had a fever now in almost three days. His lungs no longer hurt, he can breath fine, no chills, his body doesn't hurt but he still has some headaches. I Think it is finished but won't be sure for at least a few more days. If you get it make sure to eat and drink plenty of fluids even though you won't want to.

He didn't go to the hospital but he did have a virtual Dr. visit. She gave him a Z pac. If his lungs had gotten any worse than they were he would have gone to the hospital and a few times said he wanted to go because he thought they would take better care of him but we said not yet. I know he thought they could relieve the pains and aching he was in but we knew they couldn't. He did not get tested. No car and it was pointless to go when we knew what he had. He is still a little tired but that virus fights with your body to no end. I hope none of the rest of us have to go thru this and I feel for every single person that gets this. Be Careful and don't be careless.

I'm trying to watch movies to get away from this coronavirus reality. It can just be so damn depressing watching the news and coming here and the top thread is coronavirus. The reality is this virus isn't leaving. We are stuck with this monster for almost 2 years. I wish people would take it more seriously that they could kill someone because they have chosen not to stay at home or wear protective masks.

China has mysteriously increased their death count this morning.

Guardian-Wuhan’s prevention and control taskforce have revised the death toll in Wuhan upwards by 50%, from 2,579 to 3,869. The updated figure comes after weeks of scepticism about the reported death toll, as other countries have seen fatalities reach more than 10,000.The agency said reasons for the change included adding the number of patients unable to reach hospitals, late, mistaken or double reporting, as well as difficulty linking information reported from private hospitals, temporary hospitals and other medical institutions that handled patients. “Life and the people are paramount. Every loss of life during the epidemic is not just a source of sorrow for their family, but the city as well. We would like to send our sincere sympathies to the family members of those who died during the epidemic, as well as our comrades and medical staff who sacrificed their lives,” it said.

Denmark opened schools for young children this week and from Monday the following will be allowed to resume work: hairdressers, dentists, tattooists, driving school instructors, physiotherapists, psychologists, beauty and massage salons, optometrists, podiatrists, spa clinics, piercing studios and chiropractors. Great for general health and well-being but clearly not maintaining accepted social distancing.

Still so much to learn about this virus

CNN-South Korea's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported Friday that 2.1% of recovered coronavirus patients have retested positive. Out of 7,829 patients who recovered from Covid-19 and were released from isolation, 163 retested positive. It is currently unclear why patients could be retesting positive and the phenomena is being reviewed by the government. Most experts think it's unlikely that somebody will be reinfected right after recovering. It's possible that issues with testing – or varying amounts of viral RNA in the body, which the tests look for – could explain why people tested positive after testing negative.

"The bitter Bernie supporters can't help making snide comments about Biden."

Bernie was a great concept for a booming economy. But how do you finance these projects during a recession and with the current deficit?

I would actually love to see Trump win a second term just to show his fan base what a total loser he is. He inherited a booming economy and gave huge tax cuts and gifts to his corporate friends. What are his plans for new jobs and the economy now during a recession? More fake deals, deregulation and corporate gifts? What about the record deficit? How will the guy who bankrupted 3 casinos save us? More money for his big beautiful wall while millions are unemployed? How will he trick his fan base now?

At some point, I hope there's a study of the positive-yet-asymptomatic people to figure out what they have in common that's keeping them symptom-free. And if that something could be harnessed in some way to help prevent symptoms in others.

Shinzo Abe says there are issues with WHO, and Japan will review its funding after the pandemic

From CNN’s Yoko Wakatsuki in Tokyo

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told media in a Friday press conference that the WHO has issues and Japan will review its financial contributions after the pandemic is over.

"We must support WHO firmly now. However, it is true that there are problems and issues. I think it Is necessary to look into it once the coronavirus outbreak has ceased," Abe said.

Abe says the WHO takes a political stance and that Japan has been requesting for Taiwan to becomes a member for several years. China considers Taiwan a renegade province and objects to its inclusion as an equal by international organizations.

2% of known recovered patients in South Korea have retested positive for coronavirus

From CNN’s Jake Kwon in Seoul

South Korea's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported Friday that 2.1% of recovered coronavirus patients have retested positive.

KCDC reports that the positive tests came back between 24 hours and 35 days, but the average was around 13.5 days following release from isolation.

Out of 137 cases the KCDC observed, 43.9% showed mild symptoms.

Samples were taken from 28 of the cases that retested positive and so far six samples did not cultivate the virus.

Examination of the 22 other samples is ongoing.

French President Macron cautiously criticizes China’s transparency on coronavirus

French President Emmanuel Macron has criticized China’s transparency on coronavirus, saying in an interview with the Financial Times that the country didn’t release all the facts about the virus. ""There are obviously things that have happened that we don't know. It is up to China to say them," Macron said from the Elysée Palace."

In the interview, Macron said China was a great power with whom France cooperates with a lot. The President added that crisis management in China cannot be compared with Europe’s.

“You cannot compare the situation of France, Germany, Italy with that of China or Russia, it is obvious. And the transparency that there is, the immediacy of information is not the same, the networks are not free in these countries.”

With weekend lockdowns and age-specific restrictions, Turkey takes a different virus approach

From CNN's Arwa Damon and Gul Tuysuz

Last weekend, the Turkish government implemented a 48-hour curfew for 31 provinces, impacting three quarters of Turkey's population.

And while critics of the government have been calling for these types of severe measures to curb the rise of Covid-19, the initial outcome was disastrous.

The curfew was announced just two hours before it was to go into effect -- causing a buying panic in some areas as people flocked to grocery stores and bakeries with little regard for social distancing measures.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced another curfew for this weekend.

In confronting coronavirus, Turkey is charting its own path -- as it does in so many other ways.

Age-specific: During the week, the stay-at-home order only applies to those under the age of 20 or over 65. All other citizens are in theory allowed to go out.

Small businesses closed, constructions sites open: Although many small businesses are closed, restaurants are open for delivery or pick-up only, public places like parks are off limits, and banks have limited hours. By contrast, construction sites are in full swing, along with factories and other businesses that are unwilling to take an economic hit.

Some experts say partial restrictions like Turkey's can be successful -- as long as those who are vulnerable continue to be protected and those who do venture out follow the appropriate measures.

Nick Cordero may never walk again after coronavirus battle, wife says

The wife of “Waitress” actor Nick Cordero said he may not be able to walk again as he suffers from coronavirus.

Amanda Kloots posted on Instagram Thursday that her husband is on a ventilator and needs surgery on a blood flow issue in his right leg.

She is unsure if her husband will walk again after the procedure.

Cordero, 41, was recently diagnosed with coronavirus and has been fighting for his life in an intensive care unit.

“The surgery went well. The doctor said for Nick’s heart and lungs right now, they’re in the best condition that they could be,” Kloots said in her post.

“His right leg is still an issue. There has been some blood flow issues coming down to his foot.”

Kloots also mentioned that she wasn’t sure if he would be able to walk again and that there will probably be a lot of rehab in Nick’s future, but blood was returning to his toes.

This statement comes a day after she posted that doctors could not find a pulse in his leg and, in order to fully assess the toll that the COVID-19 virus had taken, they need Nick to regain consciousness.

Cordero has been in the hospital for over two weeks, where, after showing signs of recovery, his condition took a dramatic turn.

Coronavirus survivor says taking a breath "felt like I’d been underwater too long"

From CNN's Adrienne Vogt

Jason Hartelius, who is recovering from coronavirus, shared a video on social media of him unable to take a full breath and breaking into coughing fits.

“It felt like I had been underwater too long and I came up gasping for air. And just when I thought I was catching my breath again, I got pulled underwater,” he said in an interview with CNN. “The night before I went to the hospital, I was basically like that all night. Never slept because I couldn't fall asleep. And I was afraid if I did fall asleep, I was worried I might stop breathing."

On day two in the hospital, Hartelius said he thought about the reality of him dying. He was put on oxygen and given a drug to treat pneumonia. It’s been one month since Hartelius started experiencing symptoms of coronavirus.

Thirty days later, he is still experiencing fatigue and got a little winded when he walked around his block for the first time. His advice for others at this point is to exercise caution.

“You may say you're fine. You may say you're low risk. You know what? You might get it, not know it, go back to work thinking you're fine, never have any symptoms. You could give it to people you work with who could get very sick or die. That's what I want people to understand. That's why I put the video out there,” he said.

Foreign government hackers targeting US coronavirus research, FBI says

From CNN's David Shortell

Foreign governments have attempted to hack into US healthcare institutions researching coronavirus and vaccines for it, a senior FBI official said Thursday.

“We have certainly seen reconnaissance activity and some intrusions into some of those institutions — especially those that have publicly identified themselves as working on Covid-related research,” Tonya Ugoretz, the Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, said at an event hosted by the Aspen Institute.

The attempted cyberattacks are in line with efforts by nation state-backed hackers to steal corporate secrets and other research even outside times of crisis, but the activity has been heightened during the pandemic, Ugoretz said.

“There are certainly good reasons for those institutions to tout the work that they’re doing and educate the public on the work that they’re doing. The sad flip side is that it kind of makes them a mark for other nation states that are interested in learning details about what exactly they are doing and maybe even stealing proprietary information that those institutions have,” she said.

Law enforcement has recorded significant increases in the number of other reported cybercrime as many Americans have shifted their lifestyle online amid nationwide stay-at-home orders, and the FBI has warned that government-issued stimulus checks will prove a fruitful mark for online thieves.

The Internet Crime Complaint Center, or IC3, the FBI’s online tip line for cyber crime, has seen a surge in reported incidents — marking 3,000 to 4,000 complaints per day in recent months, up from typical levels of 1,000 per day, Ugoretz said.

r364, one factor in Turkey that hasn't been mentioned: early & aggressive treatment w/hydroxychloroquine + azithromycin + zinc. In big cities like Istanbul, you can get the meds for yourself just by showing up at a clinic with at least one concrete symptom & getting tested, and get meds to put your entire household on prophylaxis once somebody in it gets a confirmed positive test result.

Reportedly, their total infection numbers are the same as everyone else, but what happens beyond that diverges RADICALLY, depending upon whether or not you began treatment early. Start early, and the death rate is only slightly above South Korea. Wait until sick enough to hospitalize, and it's as bad as Italy. Their overall inpatient admission rate is less than half the rate of other countries. Tentative conclusion: early treatment clearly works to reduce the number of early infections that later become serious.

by Anonymousreply 374April 17, 2020 1:11 PM

[quote]Tentative conclusion: early treatment clearly works to reduce the number of early infections that later become serious.

This seems like a no-brainer to me, but I'm not a physician or scientist. All Americans get from our medical establishment is that if you feel ill, stay home and good luck to you. Why is there no focus on or discussion of early treatment?

by Anonymousreply 375April 17, 2020 1:25 PM

Reported US coronavirus deaths, per CNN:

5 weeks ago: 41 deaths

4 weeks ago: 195 deaths

3 weeks ago: 1,195 deaths

2 weeks ago: 5,983 deaths

1 week ago: 16,684 deaths

Right now: 33,268 deaths

So why are we talking about opening the country back up?

by Anonymousreply 376April 17, 2020 1:31 PM

[quote] All Americans get from our medical establishment is that if you feel ill, stay home and good luck to you.

In large part that is the fault of Donald Trump. He handled the early stages of this pandemic so poorly and so hobbled the nation's response that the pandemic is now enormous. Many other countries do not have the problems that we are facing. Our medical system is crushed by the weight of it. "Good luck to you" is all there is to offer in many cases. Certainly there is no testing. Not even a suitable mask. We don't have more aggressive early treatment because under our current circumstances, it is not possible.

Trump. There's your answer. Trump.

by Anonymousreply 377April 17, 2020 1:36 PM

R376: because death is supposedly a "lagging indicator" and that means once the number of fatalities hits Trump's magic number of 60,000, the virus will therefore have just disappeared a couple of days before that. Then it will be safe to go back to normal!

by Anonymousreply 378April 17, 2020 1:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 380April 17, 2020 1:53 PM

[quote] death is supposedly a "lagging indicator"

Yes, I think of it this way: Donald Trump elected as president was an early indicator of disaster, and the resultant death is a lagging indicator.

by Anonymousreply 381April 17, 2020 1:54 PM

[quote] Why is there no focus on or discussion of early treatment?

I think early treatment is a goal and it will probably happen before a vaccine is found, but we are still in the very early stages of understanding the coronavirus. They don't know yet what works.

I’m in London and can’t believe the amount of people who aren’t social distancing still. I went to the local Tesco (market) yesterday and people were literally brushing up against me. Totally clueless. No masks and no gloves or anything. If anything they looked at me like I was a freak in my mask and gloves. The government here is giving such mixed messages. It’s really surrealistic. Ugh!

I hope the obese people who are most at risk are the TRULY obese, like Walmart shoppers. I'm technically obese (BMI of 33), yet when I ride the subway, I can easily slide in between any two people to nab a seat - unless they're ginormous - and if I'm already sitting with an open spot next to me, it's usually the first spot new riders gun for when they board at the next station.

It is a very paternalistic society. They will do what they are told to do. And if they are not given specific instructions, they will 'carry on' unabated in their risky behaviors. They are so accustomed to being controlled that they know no better.

I was living there during both the Mad Cow drama and a nationwide salmonella outbreak which resulted in the entire population of poultry being slaughtered. The crazy messages from the government about those bona fide threats to the nation's health were crazy. Thin on facts. Long on reassurances that 'the proper authorities are taking every necessary precaution....' Obviously, that was not true or neither of those health problems would ever have existed in the first place.

R374 R375 This is exactly what is have been thinking and what I had thought the hydrocloroquine -zinc-zpack would work best when illness was not severe!

Why are people just told to isolate and hope and pray for best until severe? That is so stupid.

Also why the hell have US contracted with GM or other auto maker for 860 k vents when we don’t even know if vents are helping! They may be making patients WORSE.

At 20% survival rate - seems like an ineffective treatment. Also barbaric. Dying alone like this.. with no family and a nurse who is probably stressed to max in a hazmat suit

> At 20% survival rate - seems like an ineffective treatment. Also barbaric. Dying alone like this.. with no family and a nurse who is probably stressed to max in a hazmat suit

Except... the alternative would be dying alone, terrified and consciously gasping for each painful breath, with no family and a nurse who's stressed to the max in a hazmat suit. At least when somebody dies on a ventilator, they're unconscious and presumably unaware of their impending doom.

That said, according to a friend who's an anesthesiology nurse at a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, as of a few days ago, the only things you have to do to qualify for HCQ+Az+Z if you asked for it is to show up at an an emergency room with at least one visible symptom in addition to fever and agree to get tested (waiting for results not necessary, and the testing requirement itself is unceremoniously waived if they're unable to DO a test). They'll give you a 5-day supply of meds on the spot, and tell you to refill it if your results come back positive (or, if you can't get tested, if you still have symptoms after day 4). Doctors and Urgent care will freely prescribe it, but finding a drug store that has it in stock can be a challenge (though it's apparently not insurmountable, especially if you're willing to drive 20-30 miles to a Walgreens or CVS who's already confirmed they have it and had your prescription transferred to them electronically by the one you went to first).

On the downside... by the time you get past all the copayments and coinsurance, a trip to the ER to score the meds could EASILY end up costing you $1,000-$3,000, so I'd guess that MAYBE 1-5% of people who'd be ELIGIBLE to get the meds early on actually DO it.

On the upside... I've also heard that since the news story about a local doctor treating patients with Ivermectin broke a few days ago, either a plurality or majority of local doctors in South Florida will now automatically suggest adding it to a HCQ cocktail, and basically no local doctors will refuse if asked. The Evidence Police might bitch, but when there's (so far) zero evidence (anecdotal or otherwise) to suggest that adding ivermectin is harmful, and first-hand reports that it seems to help at least some patients, there isn't much reason FOR local doctors to say no.

The LA Times had a story this week about people having more wild and vivid dreams during quarantine. That has certainly been true in my case. I've had the wildest dreams since the pandemic started.

Last night I dreamt that I was doing a long-distance run with Bill Maher all the way to Brazil! Why would I be dreaming about Bill Maher and running to Brazil?

A few nights ago, I dreamt about having wild sex with Matthew Broderick! I have never even found him attractive before. I woke up exhausted.

Cuomo going off on Trump in his daily update right now.

“What, you’re ‘granting’ me what the Constitution has already granted me? He should have read the Constitution before speaking. And now he says “it’s all up to the states” and wants to wash his hands of the whole thing.“

“I have said “thank you” for everything he’s done (which by the way is just doing his job but whatever.) We STILL NEED FEDERAL HELP. We’re still in the thick of this. He’s doing NOTHING.“

by Anonymousreply 424April 17, 2020 4:38 PM

More like night mares but that’s been the case since foreigners successfully mounted a coup in 2016. Been a tad stressful since then, given that a foreign country is now calling the shots in America. Pretty spooky.

As a Democrat, watching Biden lately is not a source of comfort.

Mayor Pete and Cuomo have already proven themselves fit for the job. He needs someone intelligent with a great track record to stand beside him. This is not the time to be volleying back and forth with possible candidates. If he wants a female, then consider Warren. I'd love to see Pelosi, but at this point in her life, she's probably had enough politics. Even Biden needs to retire.

This is going to be a highly unusual election year.

Law enforcement agency warns fake medical supplies being sold in Europe

From CNN’s Vasco Cotovio in London

The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, Europol, warned Friday that organized crime groups have been taking advantage of the coronavirus outbreak and are selling counterfeit and substandard medical equipment.

Among the counterfeit products being sold illegally are face masks, coronavirus test kits, disposable latex gloves, alcohol-based gels, disinfectants and even some pharmaceuticals that do not meet quality standards, Europol said in a report on Friday.

In France, police took down several websites offering screening tests that claimed to deliver results within two minutes. Investigators in Romania seized nearly 2,000 substandard masks that were destined for medical use. The masks were labeled with the brand of a Rio de Janeiro-based company.

“Counterfeit goods sold during the corona crisis do not meet the required quality standards and pose a real threat to public health and safety,” Europol Executive Director Catherine de Bolle said in a statement on Friday. “People who buy these fake products have a false sense of security, while they are in fact left unprotected against the virus:”

Sean Penn’s charity assisting with coronavirus testing in California

From CNN's Adrienne Vogt

Actor Sean Penn’s disaster relief charity has teamed up with the Los Angeles mayor’s office to offer free coronavirus testing in California, as well as training volunteers to run drive-through testing sites to relieve first-responders and firefighters from being at the sites.

Penn and his charity, Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE), have been involved in the Haiti earthquake and US hurricane relief. Penn told CNN’s Anderson Cooper the infrastructure already existed to put them in a place to easily offer assistance.

“We had the infrastructure and when we came into play, we came into a highly function governmental response in Los Angeles,” Penn said, commending Mayor Eric Garcetti and Gov. Gavin Newsom’s response to the virus.

Penn said that it’s a fluid situation as testing continues to evolve in the country, but added the federal government is key to organizing and distributing proper equipment.

“Testing is the essential, complementary component to what the heroes in the hospitals are doing,” he said.

“We really need to have clear guidelines and national strategy for all of this,” he added.

UK allegedly paid Chinese companies $20M for faulty coronavirus test kits

British officials paid $20 million to a pair of Chinese companies for at-home tests kits that supposedly detected coronavirus antibodies — but they didn’t work, according to The New York Times.

The paper said the companies offered to sell the tests even though the technology hadn’t been proven effective, the cash had to be paid up front and the UK would have to go to China to get them.

But the Brits cut the deal anyway, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson — still recovering from a nasty bout of COVID-19 that landed him in the ICU — publicly praised them.

“As simple as a pregnancy test. It has the potential to be a total game changer,”Johnson said.

But scientists and doctors at Oxford University concluded the tests were too inaccurate to use, and 500,000 remain in storage.

Another 1.5 million bought at a similar price from other sources have also gone unused, an embarrassment to British officials who are now trying to claw back some of the money.

“They might perhaps have slightly jumped the gun,” Prof. Peter Openshaw of Imperial College London, a member of the government’s New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group, told the paper.

“There is a huge pressure on politicians to come out and say things that are positive.”

A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care said the government ordered the smallest number of tests the sellers would allow, and that officials were working to get the cash back.

by Anonymousreply 455April 17, 2020 7:16 PM

Macron says ‘naive’ to think China handled coronavirus better than West

President Emmanuel Macron rejected the idea that China handled the coronavirus outbreak better than Western democracies, calling the idea “naive” because of the communist country’s lack of transparency.

In an interview published Friday in the Financial Times, Macron said there was no comparison between countries where information flowed freely and citizens could criticize their governments and those where the truth was suppressed and dissenters punished.

“Given these differences, the choices made and what China is today, which I respect, let’s not be so naive as to say it’s been much better at handling this,” Macron told the FT.

“We don’t know. There are clearly things that have happened that we don’t know about.”

Friction between China and France came to light earlier this week when the Chinese ambassador was summoned by the foreign minister after his embassy posted on its website what French lawmakers called “fake news.”

Be very careful when you go out anywhere. Because I witnessed a phenomenon yesterday that pissed me off and scared me. Some woman saying hello to a friend loudly announcing she was there in the supermarket parking lot to "scare people" by invading their space. She clearly announced, " I'm Anti social distancing and I'm not wearing any damned masks!" Then she attempted to hug him, but he backed away, and went to his car. I live in the South. But where ever Trump supporters gather, where ever those demonstrations are happening, be mindful. They're getting aggressive. They have decided that masks and social distancing represent Anti Trump, and so they are going out of their way to fuck with people. Wear your masks, gloves, and keep your distance and if you witness any aggressive behavior report it. I did and the Security guard escorted her out of the store. She was pissed and embarrassed. If you need to call police do it. They'll get cited for reckless endangerment or disturbing the peace.

I think there is a lot of wiggle room with the stats on coronadeaths. Some places will categorize a death as pneumonia, but the same death elsewhere might be called Coronavirus. And both are correct, to a degree.

Years ago, my brother in law died of heart failure, but he also had very bad diabetes, and both were caused by alcoholism. So, any of these could have been cited as the cause of death. I think that we’ll have a better idea in retrospect when comparing death rates in total from one year to the next. A bulge of deaths this Spring through Summer will be what to look for, however they are tabulated.

Why is the Corona Poll TROLL even here at DL?

Don't the Jesus Freaks in the Log Cabin Republicans have their own message boards?

Beware, he's trying to make DL-ers worried about the election on purpose.

R499 let me be more specific.

Called doc at 3pm, he approved the test for me and my 70 year old mom. She was tested the next morning at noonish...she was a higher priority test because of age and because she works in a pharmacy.

I was tested the following morning. At that point her test results came back negative. My results were give. To me within 48 hours of the test, hers was less.

They did tell us we probably wouldn’t be tested at the same time because they were triaging tests. She was moved up the line due to her age and profession. I was not. I work from home.

So technically she was tested and has her results with 36 hours of the phone call to the doctor. I took longer as I wasn’t as much of a priority with just having a headache

USA Cases: 699,862

That's pretty easy! And not have to support a Deplorable pretending to be a gay Democrat like the Corona Poll TROLL.

And all of these places taking temps - a fever means nothing,

My aunt had her temp taken everyday when she arrived at work. She never had a fever, nor did some of her coworkers. They all got infected. Fevers mean nothing and shouldn’t serve as a basis for testing or allowing passengers to fly.

How is France handling the issue of face masks? They had a controversial law enacted years ago that prohibited Muslim woman from wearing a veil in public, as is the custom for some. Have they exempted health masks? I also wondered how this affected those Catholic orders of nuns who still wear veils of some kind.

by Anonymousreply 514April 17, 2020 10:20 PM

Damn, those of you saying the Corona poll troll is a Republican aren't kidding.

Block him and you'll see he posted a bunch in the DNC debate threads and bashes every major candidate - Biden, Sanders, Warren, and makes RNC talking point comments about each (Native American, sleepy, age).

And he seems to have a habit of upcoming every single post he makes, some obscenely. I was wondering why one of his posts had so many upvotes after an hour and now I know why.

I don't know if he's gay or not, but he's definitely not a Democrat.

Accumulating evidence shows overall U.S. exposures likely to be lower than once presumed, 2-5% nationally, more in hot spots.

Re: Australia, it can’t be overstated how giant of a landmass it is and very low population density outside of Sydney, Melbourne. It’s also hot and has been hot January through March. My feeling is that winter may bring an increase in corona. I know the whole heat thing is unproven but anecdotally it seems to have a strong association between colder temperatures and case numbers with the inverse true. Why has Thailand not had an explosion of cases? They get so many Chinese tourists and conditions are cramped. I have a feeling it’s the heat and humidity.

by Anonymousreply 534April 17, 2020 11:58 PM

R534 it could also be underreporting, lack of testing, etc.

Australia doesn't have a big population for such a huge landmass either so they are more spread out. It's like a nation of Montanas.

I read some instructions about how to decontaminate your mask, and it says the virus can’t survive when it’s dry. It needs moisture to live. So it says keep your mask in a ventilated container so moisture can’t build up.

So I’m wondering if super hot desert areas with very low humidity might do better in the summer. I can’t figure out how a humid place would be hard for the virus to live. It seems like it would be a friendly place for the virus. Some humid places, you just walk outside in the summer and you’re pouring sweat.

For those worried about Biden being President. He will appoint extremely capable people and they will all spend the next four years trying to undo and fix the damage Trump has done. I doubt they will have time for anything else. If you want to believe the psychics Biden will only be President for about a year then will either die or step down and hand it to the VP. Obama administration asked for funding to tackle future pandemics but Republicans refused

Tea Party blocked hundreds of millions in funding, investigation finds

Barack Obama’s efforts to replenish America’s stockpile of protective equipment for healthcare workers were repeatedly blocked by Republican lawmakers, an investigation has found.

The investigation by ProPublica found requests for funding to purchase protective equipment and train medical staff to prepare for future outbreaks were denied by a Republican-controlled House of Representatives that was filled with Tea Party-affiliated politicians.

Citing budget documents, as was as administration and congressional officials involved in negotiations, the report discovered that “had Congress kept funding at the 2010 level through the end of the Obama administration, the stockpile would have benefited from $321m (£259m) more than it ended up getting.”

Healthcare workers treating coronavirus patients across the country have complained about a lack of proper protective equipment. Many are having to reuse masks, which puts them at greater risk of contracting the virus.

As the coronavirus has continued to spread across the US in recent weeks, Donald Trump has repeatedly tried to shift blame for shortfalls in the government’s response to the outbreak onto his predecessor. Speaking last month, the US president said the Obama administration “made a decision on testing that turned out to be very detrimental to what we’re doing.” It was unclear exactly what decision the president was referring to.

Mr Trump has also blamed the Obama administration and state governors for shortages of protective equipment for healthcare workers across the country.

Earlier this month he said he had “inherited a broken system.” He added: “They also gave us empty cupboards. The cupboard was bare … So we took over a stockpile with a cupboard that was bare.”

In fact, Mr Obama’s efforts to build up the stockpile and prepare for the next outbreak were stymied by a Republican-controlled House of Representatives that was heavily influenced by Tea Party-affiliated politicians elected on promises of cutting back government spending.

to be continued

by Anonymousreply 570April 18, 2020 5:50 AM

Speaking in 2014, Mr Obama argued it was necessary to set up a “public health infrastructure that we need to deal with potential outbreaks in the future.”

He said: “There may and likely will come a time in which we have both an airborne disease that is deadly, and in order for us to deal with that effectively we have to put in place an infrastructure, not just here at home but globally, that allows us to see it quickly, isolate it quickly, respond to it quickly, so that if and when a new strain of flu like the Spanish flu crops up five years from now or a decade from now, we’ve made the investment and we’re further along to be able to catch it.”

At the time, the former president was asking for hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to prepare the US for future pandemics, but the request was rejected by Republican politicians.

✕ Sponsored Ad Up next Who said it?

The funding was a small part of an emergency request for $6.18bn (£3.98bn) to deal with the Ebola epidemic in 2014. As part of that package, hundreds of millions were to be set aside to help the country prepare for the next outbreak by procuring personal protective equipment for the country’s strategic national stockpile and training medical staff.

Most of that money was eventually secured, but funding for the future preparedness programmes was reduced. According to ProPublica, only $165m (£132m) went to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention’s public health emergency preparedness programmes, which included the stockpile.

CNN-The World Health Organization has warned there is no evidence to suggest the presence of antibodies in blood can determine whether someone has immunity to the coronavirus. Dr. Mike Ryan, the WHO’s executive director for health emergencies, said Friday there was no indication so far that a large proportion of the population had developed immunity. “There’s been an expectation, maybe, that herd immunity may have been achieved and that the majority of people in society may already have developed antibodies. I think the general evidence is pointing against that... so it may not solve the problem the governments are trying to solve.”
