Coronavirus Freakout 28 - The Corona Strain

Near the gates and within two cities there will be scourges the like of which was never seen: famine within plague, people put out by steel, crying to the great immortal God for relief.

If I were a nurse or CNA or any medical professional and there were not enough supplies I would have to resign immediately.

Because the truth is that battle was already lost when supplies were not gathered and distributed in the MONTH that the administration had to prepare for this.

So by the time the supplies didn’t arrive, it was too late. Sorry, but nurses aren’t kamikazes. It is unfair to expose them to death. The battle was lost weeks before. I wouldn’t sacrifice myself on the fire in vain.

The Philippines has reported its largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases

From journalist Isaac Yee in Hong Kong

The Philippines recorded 343 new coronavirus infections on Sunday -- the largest single-day increase in cases since the outbreak began.

Those cases bring the countrywide number of coronavirus cases to 1,418, according to the country's Department of Health.

The Department of Health also reported three additional fatalities due to the coronavirus, bringing the death toll in the Philippines to 71.

The OP of this thread is the obnoxious freak who INSISTS that these threads have a pretentious quote, be named for films, and have a poll. Somehow he feels that he owns these threads, and has created number 28, even though a thread 28 already existed.

by Anonymousreply 30March 30, 2020 2:37 AM

I have talked to many people and am noticing some common concerns:

People talking about buying guns. This is disturbing.

People being convinced that many Americans will not follow social distancing guidance for more than a few weeks, if at all. I guess this depends on region.

by Anonymousreply 32March 30, 2020 2:39 AM

R30, the tradition is for the threads to have a quotation from plague related literature and to have a title with some wordplay and a poll people can understand. Indulging your inner Madonna fangirl is just not what it's about, hun.

by Anonymousreply 42March 30, 2020 2:48 AM

Latest on the Corona cruise ship that no one wants:

The Zaandam, the cruise ship hit by the coronavirus, and the Rotterdam, which took on passengers from the Zaandam, both have been allowed to pass through the Panama Canal. The Panamanian government gave Carnival Corporation-owned Holland America Line permission Saturday with the restriction that nobody from the Zaandam put a foot on the ground in Panama, Reuters reported. Next stop: Port Everglades.

Among those left on the Zaandam are 69 passengers and 110 crew with flu-like symptoms, a spokesperson for Holland America Erik Elvejord said Sunday.

The passengers who died were from the U.S., Sweden, Holland and Great Britain. Elvejord said the cause of death is not confirmed. “We do not do autopsies on board our ships,” he said via email. “Out of respect for the family members and HIPPA regulations, we are not able to comment any further.”

One passenger died March 23, two Thursday, and one Friday. The company notified passengers of the deaths Friday.

Several crew members on the Rotterdam are self-isolating in their cabins because they fear infection from the exposed Zaandam guests who transferred to their ship, a worker said via email. The company used only temperature checks to ensure those who transferred were virus-free, however not all who are infected develop a fever.

In his Sunday afternoon statement, Port Everglades mayor Trantalis called the company’s plan to come to Port Everglades, “deeply troubling.”. Broward County has 838 positive cases as of Sunday morning’s update from the state of Florida, second most in the state behind neighboring Miami-Dade County, and has had 11 deaths.

“The problem here is that Port Everglades sits in the very middle of a vast urban area,” he said. “There are neighborhoods to the north, south and west of the port.”

Nearly 100 more Big Apple residents died from the coronavirus since Sunday morning, raising the city’s death toll to 776, according to city data.

From 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., the city tallied 98 more deaths and 1,166 more coronavirus cases, meaning 33,474 people in the city have now been infected with the illness.

Queens, in that time-frame, remained the hardest-hit borough with 10,737 cases.

Brooklyn has the second most cases at 8,887, followed by the Bronx at 6,250, Manhattan at 5,582 and Staten Island with 1,984.

Mayor de Blasio earlier Sunday warned the city will be in the throes of the virus for quite some time to come.

“We will go through a really tough, tough journey,” the mayor said at a press briefing.

“April will be worse than March, and I fear that May could even be worse than April,” he said. “We’re going to be in for weeks of this.”

108-year-old Spanish flu survivor dies of coronavirus

A

108-year-old British woman who survived the 1918 Spanish Flu succumbed to the coronavirus, according to a report.

Hilda Churchill died in a Salford nursing home on Saturday, hours after testing positive for COVID-19 — and just eight days before her 109th birthday, The Guardian reported.

The oldest known coronavirus victim in the UK, Hilda was born in 1911, seven years before the influenza that infected 500 million people worldwide and killed her 12-month-old baby sister.

“It was never something she talked about being frightened of, though,” said her grandson, Anthony Churchill. But “she was scared of this new virus.

“She survived so much and this was just another thing,” Anthony said. “She was a person who just got on with things — never asked for sympathy or said she was hard done by.”

The last time Anthony visited his grandmother they chatted about the coronavirus.

“She said it was very similar to the Spanish flu but in her day there were no planes and somehow it still managed to spread everywhere,” he said.

Hilda and most of her family became infected with the Spanish Flu while living in Crewe in Cheshire.

“She remembers everyone getting it and her mother trying to look after them and her father collapsing in a street and having to be carried home,” her grandson said.

“She was saying how amazing it is that something you can’t see can be so devastating.”

A seamstress, Hilda moved to Salford during the Great Depression to find work. She had four children, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

by Anonymousreply 106March 30, 2020 4:25 AM

This is the offical one.

by Anonymousreply 107March 30, 2020 4:28 AM

R103 Relentless contact tracing started early on combined with widespread testing also early. Anyone who tests positive immediately quarantined and not some ‘voluntary’ bullshit either. Their movements are tracked via cellphone apps and those quarantined do NOT show their faces outside their homes.

by Anonymousreply 108March 30, 2020 4:29 AM

R103 Here’s part of the reason:

[quote]South Korea developed tools and practices for aggressive contact tracing during the MERS outbreak. Health officials would retrace patients’ movements using security camera footage, credit card records, even GPS data from their cars and cellphones. “We did our epidemiological investigations like police detectives,” Dr. Ki said. “Later, we had laws revised to prioritize social security over individual privacy at times of infectious disease crises.”

by Anonymousreply 109March 30, 2020 4:37 AM

R103 (continued)

[quote]South Koreans’ cellphones vibrate with emergency alerts whenever new cases are discovered in their districts. Websites and smartphone apps detail hour-by-hour, sometimes minute-by-minute, timelines of infected people’s travel — which buses they took, when and where they got on and off, even whether they were wearing masks. People who believe they may have crossed paths with a patient are urged to report to testing centers.

[quote]To spare hospitals and clinics from being overwhelmed, officials opened 600 testing centers designed to screen as many people as possible, as quickly as possible — and keep health workers safe by minimizing contact. At 50 drive-through stations, patients are tested without leaving their cars. They are given a questionnaire, a remote temperature scan and a throat swab. The process takes about 10 minutes. Test results are usually back within hours.

The NY numbers today are beyond what I’ve personally been hoping for.

The success of Clinical Trials that started Tuesday (aka 40 years ago) are apparently evident in the decline in fatalities.

ElderLez- what’s the cutoff for compassionate use in a drug trial? If dramatic changes in morbidity are noted with approved drugs, can’t they end it on “compassionate use” grounds?

Ignore the imposter thread I created earlier. Let’s max this one out and leave the other to posterior. I mean prosperity.

R108 Taiwan started doing that and more way before South Korea, back in December and so far has had the best record for containment. They had no choice but to be extra vigilant due to proximity to enemy China, and the fact that they're barred from being a member of The Who. Taiwanese nationalized healthcare database keep track of who has entered and left the country, and they are followed for symptoms immediately and then 1 week upon return. Those who initially tested negative are then tested again 2 weeks later to catch any late converters. If you test positive then you have the choice of quarantine at home or at quarantine dormitories where you're given 3 meals, free internet, and laundry among other basics. If you quarantine at home then the government pays you a stipend for missed work. Almost all buildings even have infrared thermometers stationed outside buildings or in the hallway entrances to buildings that check for febrile individuals. If they are febrile then they can't enter the buildings. Taiwanese also bought into social distancing pretty much from day one of government advisory. The government also banned the export of masks and told industries to ramp up production of masks. Everyone was limited to 3 masks per person per week at the height of demand, and have apps that show which stores in your neighborhoods have them if your closest store runs out for the week. Also for those who are positive who then ignore quarantine, the cops will track you down and hit your with a heavy fine. Their press isn't above shaming offenders either, like they did recently with an idiot who decided to go clubbing while he's supposed to be in quarantine.

The US is sadly the world example of complete mismanagement after early warning. We lost so much time while Trump fiddled about trying to ignore it as a hoax. We could have mobilized testing abd strict measures early on. Now we have an out of control situation, due to his incompetence.

Contrast R112 and R115 with the late and half-assed measures taken by the Europeans and the US. The results speak for themselves.

by Anonymousreply 123March 30, 2020 5:02 AM

Wow - that was great info on S. Korea. Americans won't want to give up their privacy like that - although they know they are already tracked.

I was in Hong Kong when it all broke out in January - literally overnight, 99% of the population had facemasks on. Now I know it's part of their culture, but they haven't had much spread.

It's so fucking wrong that US officials said masks don't work. WRONG - they keep infected people from spreading their germs. It won't prevent you from catching it, but it sure reduces sick people from spreading it.

Why couldn't they see the other side of it?

by Anonymousreply 129March 30, 2020 5:09 AM

Masks can also spread virus from the outside of masks to your face, clothing, or any other surfaces that you then touch with your hands (that touched the outside of mask). There are pros and cons to the public wearing masks. Other cons include incorrect wearing of masks, higher viral load on outside of reusable masks (virus can stay up to 3-4 days), and false sense of security when wearing masks such that people take risks with social distancing. Those are just some reasons. In the US people aren't used to wearing masks outside unlike in Japan where people wear them for anything from allergies to illness (they're ill but don't want to spread own germs to others). But people put on masks wrong and think they're immune to spread. I think the main reason for advisory against masks is that idiots were buying up vast quantities thus depleting stock which then impacted supplies for healthcare workers. You can't advise people to wear masks while at the same time not have any caps or rations. Look what's happened with toilet paper, it'd be worse 100x if we say go ahead and wear masks, it's necessary as toilet paper.

I think masks are good form of protection IF you still take the advised precautions. Also people need to learn how to put on masks properly AND understand that even with proper fit it isn't foolproof. I was sent information on the types of fabric and materials to make masks that are both comfortable and effective. They came up with cotton sheets and cotton t-shirt fabrics, then disposable vacuum bag with HEPA filter.

by Anonymousreply 142March 30, 2020 5:35 AM

You're welcome R142, I'm already planning to do just that, except with elastic bands instead of rubber bands. I go back to work in a few days seeing clinic patients and I'm not reusing masks again like they told us to do. I just ordered some disposable vacuum bags with HEPA filter on Amazon....desperate times calls for desperate measures and I'm not about to take CDC's advice to healthcare providers that bandanas and scarves are acceptable replacements for masks if we even run out of reused ones.

by Anonymousreply 143March 30, 2020 5:40 AM

Put on a pair of gloves to remove the mask, and dispose carefully. Put sanitizer on the gloves. Remove the gloves by grasping the edge between your thumb and pointer finger, and pull downward so the glove is inside out. Place that glove in the palm of the other hand, and grasp and remove the other glove in the same manner. The first glove will be inside of the second, and only the clean inside of the glove will be exposed. Dispose of the gloves, then wash and sanitize hands thoroughly.

There’s a guy making masks out of air co do too big filters. He was on CNN. Apparently the filter is about as efficient as an N95 mask.

There’s a couple of articles about masks on Reddit. One mentions the guy who is the inventor of the N95 mask. He says you can re-use them if you bake them in the oven for half an hour. Or let them sit out in the fresh air for 3-4 days.

Here’s a chart that estimates that the apex will be around April 15. There’s a pull down menu where you can check on your own state.

Do not reuse gloves under any circumstances.

by Anonymousreply 151March 30, 2020 5:52 AM

Re-use masks, goddam it. ^^

Here’s the pertinent part of the post in case the link is lost.

MASK REUSE METHOD #1

When reusing N95 masks, leave a used respirator in dry, atmosphere air for 3-4 days to dry it out. Polypropylene in N95 masks is hydrophobic and contains zero moisture. COVID-19 needs a host to survive–it can survive on a metal surface for up to 48 hours, on plastic for 72 hours, and on cardboard for 24 hours. When the respirator is dry in 3-4 days, the virus will not have survived.

Take four N95 masks, and number them (#1-4). On day 1, use mask #1, then let it dry it out for 3-4 days.

On day 2, use mask #2, then let it dry out for 3-4 days. Same for day 3, and day 4…

MASK REUSE METHOD #2

You can also sterilize the N95 mask by hanging it in the oven (without contacting metal) at 70C (158F) for 30 minutes-it is reported that COVID-19 cannot survive at 65C (149F) for 30 minutes.

Use a wood clip to hang the respirator in the kitchen oven to do the sterilization.

When sterilizing N95 masks, be wary of using UV light–keep N95 masks away from UV light / sunlight. N95 masks are degraded by UV light because it damages the electrostatic charges in the polypropylene material. It is unclear how long the masks can be exposed to UV light before they are ineffective.

TIPS FOR REUSE METHOD #1 AND METHOD #2

DO NOT place the respirator on a metal surface, or too close to metal–the temperature on the metal surface is higher than the air temperature. Keep N95 masks away from UV light / sunlight. When removing the mask, hold the edge of the straps attached to take off the N95 mask. Your hands may be contaminated at this time–don’t touch the inside part of the respirator. Wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds afterward.

HOMEMADE MASKS

It is not a good idea to use cotton masks when taking care of infected patients. The effectiveness of a material made of cotton is not high-its fiber is not fine enough, and it cannot be charged. An N95 mask is so thin because it uses Polypropylene which is made of millions of microfibers layered on top of each other that have been permanently electrostatically charged. An electrical field ionizes the air and forces the ions deep into the microfibers which allows the polypropylene to act as a filter.

However, using a HEPA filter with a face mask might increase its effectiveness, but it may make it harder to breathe. If you place another media over a face mask, the resistance to breathing increases-it is the sum of the two together. When adding an extra layer, make sure it perfectly covers the whole mask. Keep in mind it may make it more difficult to breathe.

R145 - that link is curious. In many states, including California, they don't predict a bed or ICU shortage. Strangely, the peak date for CA is 2-3 weeks later than many other states.

If we keep to those numbers, although still horrible in total, it somehow seems a bit more comforting.

by Anonymousreply 157March 30, 2020 6:01 AM

R157, I thought it was optimistic myself. It’s hard to imagine the peak will be in only two weeks when things are increasing faster and faster like they are. Andrew Cuomo says the statistics he’s using suggest around three weeks, which sounds more realistic to me.

I wonder what stats they’re using though. The documentation we have to go on is terrible. No tests, people probably had the virus through most of the winter and were never diagnosed, lots of people that died early on were probably misdiagnosed as pneumonia or something else. My guess is this has been gradually building up for months, and we may be close to hitting the crest of the wave, but some states are still doing very little to combat it, especially red states.

Louisiana just killed themselves going ahead with Mardi Gras. Then Florida with spring break was idiotic too. Both heavy travel centers. Now New Yorkers escaping in every direction.

Personally, I think the figures are drastically skewed due to underreporting.

An excerpt from an article on CNN

CNN...But concerns about a dwindling supply of PPE are not new. Back on February 7, the World Health Organization (WHO) sounded alarm bells about "the limited stock of PPE," noting demand was 100 times higher than normal for this equipment. Yet the same day as the WHO warning, the Trump administration announced that it was transporting to China nearly 17.8 tons (more than 35,000 pounds) of "masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials." As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo noted in the press release announcing this shipment, "These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people." Americans indeed are a generous people. We want to help those in need. And at the time these medical supplies were shipped, more than 28,000 people in China were infected with nearly 600 deaths attributed to the virus. But how could Trump allow tons of vital medical equipment Americans to be transported to another country in February if, as he has claimed since January, he fully understood the risk the United States was facing from the virus?

More questions about the Chinese figures

Guardian-Asymptomatic people may be infecting others in China despite officials saying risk of this is low, reports the Guardian’s Lily Kuo in Shanghai. As China relaxes lockdown measures and people return to work, they are concerned about the possibility that asymptomatic carriers will continue spreading the virus. For the last two weeks, health authorities have reported an almost zero rate of local transmission of the virus, with almost all new cases coming in from outside the country. But critics say officials are downplaying the outbreak by not including asymptomatic cases. China has not released data for the number of asymptomatic cases, but Chinese researchers estimated that 59% of those who contracted the virus had mild or no symptoms. Documents seen by the South China Morning Post reportedly showed more than 40,000 asymptomatic patients that would not have been included in China’s total number of infections of more than 80,000.

The price of oil has sunk to levels not seen since for 18 years as demand for crude has collapsed amid the coronavirus pandemic. Brent crude fell to $23.03 a barrel at one point on Monday morning, its lowest level since November 2002.In addition to the drop in demand, a price war broke out earlier this month between Saudi Arabia and Russia. However, an analyst said a collapse in demand from the measures taken to counter the spread of coronavirus was now the main factor.

I've been wondering from the beginning of that midwestern trait of being boring and following the rules is actually helping right now. Any New Yorkers on here who could tell us if people did what they were told right away or did they all think they knew best and, with that New York spirit, just did whatever the fuck they wanted until it was too late? Questions about the accuracy of UK figures

Daily Mail-King's College Hospital Trust has handled at least 31 deaths, according to an internal memo, while the NHS's official figures list just 11 for the hospital. The difference raises the prospect of the UK's true coronavirus death count being considerably higher than the official 1,228 which was announced yesterday. Deputy chief medical officer for England, Dr Jenny Harries, has admitted there is a lag of at least one day between the deaths happening and their being reported. Families must all be informed, she said, and data across the NHS and Government must match up before any official announcement can be made. Statistics released last week showed some deaths date back up to 10 days before they are revealed in national statistics.

Guardian-Austria is making it compulsory for shoppers to wear facial masks in supermarkets. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Monday morning announced that introducing the requirement was a “necessary step” to help to prevent the airborne transmission of the virus. Shoppers are to be handed masks covering their mouth and nose at the entrance of supermarkets from Wednesday, the chancellor said. Kurz said the masks were not the same protective masks used by medical staff and weren’t designed to “protect” those wearing them but only to stop them spreading infections further.

Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, urged rural communities in the US to prepare for the spread of Covid-19, "even though you think it's not there.”

When Birx was asked on NBC's “Today” show what her message was to rural areas in the country, she said this:

"This virus, we think, can spread with a lot of asymptomatic and mild cases. It's not until it gets into the vulnerable groups that you start to see the hospitalizations."

"If you wait for that, if the metros and rural areas don't take care now, by the time you see it, it has penetrated your community pretty significantly. And that's what we're concerned about. And that's why you have to prepare, even though you think it's not there," Birx told NBC's Savannah Guthrie.

While 100,000+ deaths in the U.S. sounds like a very scary number, here's something to put it in perspective: per the CDC, more than 640,000 Americans die of heart disease per year.

One death from heart disease EVERY 37 SECONDS. 1700 deaths per day.

Weirdly, remembering those numbers help lower my panic level. COVID-19 is bad, for sure, but there are other things that are much worse. At least for now, anyway.

More than 100,000 coronavirus cases reported in Italy

From CNN's Nicola Ruotolo in Rome

The total number of coronavirus cases in Italy, including those who have recovered and those who have died, has reached at least 101,739, the Civil Protection Agency said Monday.

However, the number of new cases of coronavirus in Italy has decreased for the fifth day in a row.

Italy recorded 1,648 new cases on Monday, bringing the total of active cases to 75,528. The percentage increase of new active cases — 2.2% — is the lowest since the start of the outbreak in the country.

The number of deaths increased slightly to a total of 11,591 (812 more than Sunday). There are also 1,590 people who have recovered from the virus in the last 24 hours, the biggest daily increase since the beginning of the crisis. A total of 14,620 people have recovered.

by Anonymousreply 253March 30, 2020 4:20 PM

Update for the UK. Apparently, they will also start including people who die outside of hospitals (nursing homes, etc., ) as from tomorrow

BBC- DHSC have just announced a further 180 deaths of people in the UK diagnosed with coronavirus, bringing the total to 1,408. There is a glimmer of hope in these figures: had deaths continued to grow at that recent daily rate of roughly a third a day, we might have expected to see 350 new deaths on Sunday and 450 today. Instead, we’ve seen slight falls: 260 new deaths on Saturday, 209 on Sunday and a further fall to 180 today. But we shouldn’t get carried away too soon: last week’s Sunday-into-Monday figures also showed slight dips on the previous Saturday. But by Tuesday, they resumed the upward march. It’s still too soon to know whether this is a real ray of hope, a blip caused by different working practices at the weekend or some mixture of the two.

Coronavirus patients could still be contagious after symptoms resolve: study

Coronavirus patients could still be infectious for up to eight days after they’ve appeared to recover, a new study says.

The small study, which was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, determined that half of patients were still carriers of the virus even after symptoms resolved.

Researchers looked at 16 patients with mild cases who were admitted to the Treatment Center of PLA General Hospital in Beijing between Jan. 28 and Feb. 9.

“The most significant finding from our study is that half of the patients kept shedding the virus even after resolution of their symptoms,” co-author Dr. Lokesh Sharma from the Yale School of Medicine said in a statement.

On average, the patients still had the virus two-and-a-half days after no longer experiencing symptoms — but individual cases ranged up to eight days, the study said.

Researchers cited other studies in the report that found those carrying the virus could still be contagious to others. Given these findings, they warned that patients who have appeared to recover could spread the disease.

“This information can provide useful tool for clinicians and policymakers to ensure that recovered patients do not spread the virus,” researchers said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently recommends that people with symptoms associated with coronavirus self-isolate for at least three days after the “resolution of a fever without fever-reducing medications.”

“If you had mild respiratory symptoms from COVID-19 and were staying at home so as not to infect people, extend your quarantine for another two weeks after recovery to ensure that you don’t infect other people,” said co-author Dr. Lixin Xie of the Chinese PLA General Hospital in a statement.

The researchers, however, noted that more studies were necessary since the report was limited in scope. It’s unclear whether the same results would be found with an older group or among those with compromised immune systems.

Andy Cohen is finally “feeling better” after testing positive for coronavirus, and the talk show host is now opening up about his experience with the deadly disease.

“It took about 10 or 11 days, I would say, to work through my system,” he said on SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live” show on Monday. “It takes a bit to get your energy back.”

Cohen, 51, first announced he was diagnosed with COVID-19 on March 20.

The Bravo head honcho said on his Radio Andy show that his symptoms consisted of a fever, chest tightness, a cough, chills, loss of taste and appetite, and “a lot of aches and pains in the body.”

He shared that he relied heavily on a pulse oximeter, a device sold over the counter at drug stores, to monitor his lung activity.

“It measures how much oxygen you’re getting to your lungs,” Cohen said. “My doctor told me what the reading would be in case it would be a cause for alarm. You could scare yourself and think, ‘Oh my God, my lungs don’t feel right,’ but you could use this pulse oximeter and see, ‘OK, well actually, you’re fine. You’re within the range.'”

The “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” host shared that he also took Tylenol, Vitamin C, and drank a lot of liquids to help him recuperate.

He said he passed the time during quarantine watching “Game of Thrones,” “Tiger King” and Season 3 of “Handmaid’s Tale,” and would speak to his family over FaceTime every night at 6 p.m. for about 40 minutes.

“I am so happy to be feeling good, and this is the first bit of normalcy that I’ve had in some time, so it’s great to be back with my family here,” he said. “I am feeling back and better than ever.”

Cohen also gave on update on when he will be seeing his 1-year-old son, Benjamin. He previously shared that having to self-isolate away from his child was the “worst part” of the diagnosis.

“I have been quarantined from Ben for the last 12 days or so and I get to see him right after the show,” he said. “Two doctors said it would be safe to see him yesterday, and I freaked out on Saturday night, worried, so I added a day.”

“WWHL” returns Monday night on Bravo from Cohen’s West Village apartment. Guests will be featured via video chat on the show.

wow, what a genius!

Belarus president believes vodka and saunas will cure coronavirus

And we’re the crazy ones?

The president of Belarus is insisting that vodka and saunas will cure the coronavirus — while claiming nations that have gone into lockdown are in the throes of a “psychosis,” according to reports.

President Alexander Lukashenko has insisted the Eastern European nation of nearly 9.5 million remain open for business — and even took part in a packed ice hockey match on Saturday.

“It’s better to die standing than to live on your knees,” he said, quoting the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, and calling sports “the best anti-virus remedy.”

“There are no viruses here,” he said of the ice rink after his game, insisting, “I don’t see them.”

He attacked the “psychosis” that is crippling other nations’ economies, saying the “world has gone mad” — and offering what he says are simple solutions.

“People should not only wash their hands with vodka but also poison the virus with it,” he advised his people, according to the Times of London.

“You should drink the equivalent of 40-50 milliliters of rectified spirit daily. But not at work,” he reportedly said.

Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus since 1994, advised slugging back the hard liquor after trips to the banya — a Russian-style sauna — “two or three times a week,” the UK Times said.

“When you come out of the sauna, not only wash your hands, but also your insides with 100 milliliters [of vodka],” Lukashenko said, according to the report.

He also advised that hard work would cure the deadly pandemic.

“You just have to work, especially now, in a village. Tractors will cure everyone! The field heals everyone!” he said.

Belarus has confirmed about 100 cases of the virus with no deaths — but many believe the government is covering up the true number, according to the UK paper.

“Lots of people think he is acting frivolously and irresponsibly,” Marina Zolotova, the editor-in-chief of the tut.by news website, told the paper.

A “very healthy” teenager has died in London of coronavirus-like symptoms — a day after a doctor told him he “didn’t have to worry about that bad flu,” according to his family.

Italian-born cook Luca Di Nicola, 19, had “a fever and a cough” for a week before his death Tuesday, symptoms also suffered by his mother and her partner who the teen lived with in north London, La Repubblica said.

They were never tested but believe they were all infected with the coronavirus, the family said.

Di Nicola was initially told to take acetaminophen by a doctor who eventually came out to see him when his condition deteriorated, his aunt, Giada, told the Italian newspaper.

“The doctor visited him at home and told him that he was young, strong and that he didn’t have to worry about that bad flu,” the aunt said, according to Metro UK.

His condition deteriorated further on Tuesday, and — after his lips turned purple — he collapsed at home, his aunt said. He was raced to North Middlesex Hospital’s ICU but died at 7 p.m. that day, she said.

His lungs were full of blood and water, and his death was initially deemed from pneumonia.

Di Nicola’s loved ones are now awaiting post-mortem test results to see if he had COVID-19 — and worrying for his mother, Clarissa, and her partner, Vincenzo, both of whom are still sick and self-isolating.

WHO stands by recommendation to not wear masks if you are not sick

From CNN's Jacqueline Howard

World Health Organization officials on Monday said they still recommend not to wear face masks unless you are sick with Covid-19 or caring for someone who is sick.

"There is no specific evidence to suggest that the wearing of masks by the mass population has any potential benefit. In fact, there's some evidence to suggest the opposite in the misuse of wearing a mask properly or fitting it properly," Dr. Mike Ryan, WHO executive director of health emergencies program, said during a media briefing in Geneva on Monday.

"There also is the issue that we have a massive global shortage," Ryan said about masks and other medical supplies. "Right now the people most at risk from this virus are frontline health workers who are exposed to the virus every second of every day. The thought of them not having masks is horrific."

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO infectious disease epidemiologist, also said during Monday's briefing that it is important "we prioritize the use of masks for those who need it most," which would be frontline healthcare workers.

"In the community, we do not recommend the use of wearing masks unless you yourself are sick and as a measure to prevent onward spread from you if you are ill," Van Kerkhove said. "The masks that we recommend are for people who are at home and who are sick and for those individuals who are caring for those people who are home that are sick."

There are more than 140,000 coronavirus cases in the US, CDC says

From CNN's Amanda Watts The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says there are now 140,904 confirmed and presumptive positive cases of novel coronavirus in the United States.

The CDC says 2,405 people have died.

Remember: CNN’s tally relies on state totals and won’t always match the CDC’s count; CNN has counted more than 143,856 cases and 2,490 deaths.

The CDC says there are cases in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands. Of the cases the CDC is reporting, 886 are travel-related, 2,351 are from close contact and a majority, 137,667 are still under investigation, the CDC website says.

The CDC is updating its coronavirus case numbers daily. Their numbers close out at 4 p.m. the day before reporting. The most up-to-date case counts will come from states, CDC officials have said.

There are 1,158 patients hospitalized and 385 of those are on ventilators, the department said.

[Quote]R141 Masks should be used once and then binned.

Ideally, yes. But if it can be trusted, a video in previous thread by a product designer talked through the process of sterilizing masks between use. It’s about risk reduction. A cleaned mask will still offer more protection in most circumstances than no mask.

The easiest technique was placing used mask in water that’s kept between 75 and 100 degree Celsius water for 10 mins, then gently scrubbing with soft toothbrush, soap and water. Rinse, and air dry.

The SF and NYC comparison is a stark one. As of today we has 374 cases and 6 deaths officially, though since California doesn't test in the numbers that New York has been doing, the number of infected individuals is higher. However, our hospitals and ICUs are not severely impacted like they are in NYC. This is where public health leadership comes into play. In SF we've been told of ways to take precautions way earlier than in NYC, we also had about a week up of stay-in-place orders than in NYC. Our SFDPH and leadership did a good job overall compared to other cities. De Blasio in NYC was telling people to go about their lives as usual, meaning not taking social distancing precautions and not showing up to work or medical clinics/ hospitals while sick with symptoms. I haven't heard about NYC's Public Health department and they'd done in the weeks leading up to the lockdown, but I'd tend to think it wasn't enough. What's maddening is that is what public health departments in every cities are paid to do in times such as this, to take preventative actions to ameliorate community spread.

It's a good thing, if you can call it that, this virus appears to have a relatively low case fatality rate of 0.5-1% when compared to Ebola virus with 25-90% for example. But what about the next epidemic when we have a novel virus that is closer to Ebola? Let this be a lesson to public health officials in our municipalities who are complacent and now are playing the blame game like other state and federal officials and politicians.

(Guardian) France sees its worst daily death toll. French health authorities have reported 418 new deaths, taking the total to 3,024. The country has become the fourth to cross the 3,000 fatalities threshold after China, Italy, and Spain. The daily government tally only accounts for those dying in hospital but authorities say they will very soon be able to compile data on deaths in retirement homes, which is likely to result in a big increase in registered fatalities. The health agency director, Jérôme Salomon, told a news conference the number of cases has risen to 44,550, an increase of 11% in 24 hours. Salomon said 5,107 people were in a serious condition needing life support, up 10% compared to Monday, an increase speeding up again after slowing for two days.

Think of it like this a bullet proof vest doesn’t protect your head, but that doesn’t mean it is worthless. That said it doesn’t make sense to go around wearing a bullet proof vest if you aren’t likely to be in the line of fire.

There are a lot of things we don’t know about transmission and for sure once you are actually infected it doesn’t matter how much you got at first. However, the degree of exposure might very well have an impact on the likelihood of infection. That was and is certainly the case with HIV.

by Anonymousreply 285March 30, 2020 6:57 PM

A doctor caring for patients said he wasn’t worried at all catching the disease. He said the healthcare providers who caught it were in the early stages of the crisis. Social distance is supposed to protect you and carrying around purell. The mask was only good to remind you not to touch your face.

The number od new transmissions has shown signs of slowing down in Washington state, In NY, and in ItalyYes the deaths are high. But the new transmissions are lower. That means social distancing is working. I hope that if you know anyone or if you're on facebook, please insist people follow common sense and distance themselves. It is working! If we just really really stick to it for the next two or three weeks we can stop this shit!

[quote][R114] studies are generally shut down when they reach statistical significance if the results are negative. However when the trend is positive they generally go to the complete planned enrollment to make sure that adverse events are captured. However, with this I expect to see (just my guess though) that studies will collapse to study the most promising treatments against each other rather than standard care. There are a fair number of trials up now thank goodness.

That's generally true of RCTs (randomized clin trials) and other standard clinical trials. For Expanded Access/compassionate use, it's a bit different. Those allow for MDs to use drugs, usually approved for other indications, where they aren't approved in order to hopefully see benefit, and enable use of data derived from that use for analysis. For example remdesevir, initially approved for treatment of ebola and Marburg,is being used under EA for use in COVID-19 patients. They are usually for single use by one patient at a time, and don't use comparators.

More traditional trials ongoing for COVID-19 are using standard care as the comparator. Placebo comparator would be best, but isn't easily possible in the current situation; the pharma companies haven't been able to create placebos quickly enough in the current crisis (they have to be made to strict standard to be useful). As some of these regimens/treatments gain acceptance or approval, they will set up trials comparing new txs against each other.

by Anonymousreply 327March 30, 2020 9:49 PM

Apologies R317 I may have misunderstood the question and my verbiage was very sloppy. I thought the question was asking when the clinical trials would be shut down and people could be put on the tested meds under a post-trial expanded access. You are absolutely right that none of the studies are using placebos for blinding yet and maybe they never will. IMHO, given the current early stage of knowledge standard of care is just a guess rather than an actual standard of care so, with the exception of ventilators, supplemental oxygen, dialysis, etc for the sequelae, it might as well be a placebo. HOWEVER, no IRB in the United States would approve withholding standard of care in this case. For potentially fatal diseases where there is some treatment to save a life it is unethical to not use that existing treatment as the comparator even though ideally you are also giving a sugar pill to half the patients for blinding. I do think it is important to distinguish eINDs, which, are for single patients and purely compassionate use, from expanded access which is often a post-trial reward for study participants bundled with long term safety and efficacy monitoring.

I want to feel sorry for small business owners but they didn't learn from the '08 recession. If you're going to open a $10 cupcake shop, do you not realize that is the first thing people are going to cut back on when, not if, economic times get rough again?

by Anonymousreply 385March 31, 2020 1:38 AM

R385 usually there is more time (months and years) to modify business strategies to dull the impact of a recession etc. - most retailers and small shops had a matter of weeks, if that. I don't fault them for not having a year's worth of revenues saved up given the rise of Amazon and how it's reduced overall profits for smaller businesses.

The ones I do fault are the giant corporations like Boeing and the airlines and so forth who spent billions to inflate their stock prices and make more money for shareholders. They should know better, but when the government orders to bail them out if things get really bad, then they aren't going to do it. The companies selling essential services and products should be nationalized in times of crisis rather than letting them take a no-strings-attached bailout.

by Anonymousreply 405March 31, 2020 4:14 AM

Over 3000 deaths in the United States. Just a question: Is it fair to pin this on Trump (as in), Donald Trump, and Trump alone, is responsible for the 3000 deaths of US citizens, or It is Donald Trump's fault.

This is a serious question: Can we legitimately blame him for this?

by Anonymousreply 408March 31, 2020 4:38 AM

We can blame him for his predictably bungled response that will result in far greater deaths.

I also blame Trump voters. They have blood on their hands

by Anonymousreply 409March 31, 2020 4:44 AM

The oncologist we met with today tried to tell me Canada would catch up with the US for % of confirmed cases and deaths. Maybe we'd reach the US present % of 0.046 but I can't see our government being as inept and callous as the US and catching up to meet the US's percentages with a much higher slope, unless other provinces (I am in BC) manage to outdo the White House. I'm thinking of Jason Kenney's UCP in particular, it seems Conservative politicians in Canada try so hard to be like the turncoat Trumpists, and to make it OBVIOUS to everyone that they're hapless and sociopathic.

by Anonymousreply 410March 31, 2020 4:44 AM

Can't blame him for the virus but he owns the haphazard national response. Not smart enough to figure out the number of deaths he's responsible for. It's a deadly virus so a combo of Washington, Lincoln and FDR wouldn't have prevented every death. The debate will rage, long after this is over, on what Trump could have done to mitigate whatever number we end up with.

Would over 3000 Americans be dead now from Covid-19 if Hillary had become President? If Barack Obama was still President? I don't think... but aside from that...

What if Jeb Bush had become President? Or even Ted Cruz? Nope. They would have done the responsible thing, listened to their advisers and acted accordingly.

I'm not certain, but I'm almost certain that even if climate-denier Mike Pence had been President, we wouldn't have 3000 dead Americans now.

Just say it with me: It's Donald Trump's fault!!!!

if we still had all these cases and deaths after Trump did everything the experts advised, then no I wouldn't blame him

problem is:

A) disbanded the Pandemic Preparedness Team because it was established by Obama

B) ignored the preparation that outgoing Obama officials left him

C) most of his people who had the conference with outgoing Obama officials are no longer in Trump admin (highest turnover rate ever)

D) did nothing to get widely available testing ready until 6 weeks late and it's STILL not nearly sufficient

E) refusal to issue national stay-at-home order

F) lying every time he speaks from saying it's a hoax to we'd be back open by Easter to the cure's around the corner, accusing hospitals of hoarding supplies etc

G) refusal to enact Defense Production Act immediately once it was learned that essential medical supplies were short

H) refusal to coordinate doling out supplies to areas of the country that needed it by priority and instead doing it by red state/red governors (the ones who kiss his flabby orange ass)

I) other stuff I've forgotten that he's done/hasn't done

by Anonymousreply 416March 31, 2020 5:08 AM

R369 J&J and Janssen won't being Phase 1 trial until September, and Janssen's AdVac technology is an adenovirus-vectored vaccine. The other trial that also signed funding grant/ deals with the US HHS is Moderna. Moderna began Phase 1 trial with the collaboration of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) which is a part of the HHS, on March 16. Preliminary results is expected in about 2 months. Moderna has had experience working on vaccines for CMV, Zika virus, RSV, Epstein Barr virus, Flu H7N9, and MERS to name some. Moderna's SARS-CoV-2 vaccine research is platformed off of their research to develop a vaccine for MERS which they've been working on for the past 2 years.

The vaccine that Moderna trialed on March 16 is a RNA vaccine, which means it encodes a viral antigen that is then recognized by the immune cells and results in a protective response to the virus. Basically RNA codings for viral proteins induce the immune system to produce antibodies. In a variety of lab including pigs, and immune response subsequent to exposure to virus was seen and all the animals survived (flu viruses). I'd describe RNA vaccines in more details on other threads. Anyways the early inside word is that the Moderna vaccine will be ready this Fall for emergency use in certain populations including healthcare professionals. For the rest of the population it won't be ready until early 2021.

I'd be more willing to be trialed with a RNA vaccine as opposed to a DNA or viral-vectored vaccine because RNA vaccines are much less likely to cause autoimmune reactions and other complications. That is likely why it was approved for human trial so quickly in March. With DNA vaccines, there's the potential risk of viral DNA integrating with the human host genome. That can lead to mutagenesis as well as inducing disease. That was what happened when researchers tried developing SARS-CoV-1 vaccine. They had all these mice that developed pathological immune reactions and vaccine-induced infections. If I'm going to be a guinea pig as a healthcare provider in the Fall if necessary, then I'm going to be the safest guinea pig possible.

The vaccine trials are progressing very fast when you realize that vaccines usually take about 10 years to make from research to usage. Along with the race to come up with an effective vaccine, work is also underway for development of antiviral medications and supportive therapies that would reduce viral load or disease complications. Hopefully this will calm some nerves, I guess we're used to being calm and collected doing our jobs as providers and knowing more of what's going on in terms of research and fast-tracked therapeutics is also reassuring. However, I won't sugarcoat it, whenever you go outside just assume that everyone you come in contact with have the virus and act accordingly within guidelines. You never know if you're going to be that rare healthy person who becomes seriously ill or dies from COVID-19. Be considerate of those hurting financially, if you're able to try to support local restaurants with takeout orders. People in the service industry are hurting badly right now.

R432 —

President Donald Trump issued a pardon on Tuesday to former San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo Jr., a billionaire real estate magnate who was convicted in a gambling fraud probe in 1998.

DeBartolo Jr. pleaded guilty in 1998 to failing to report a felony when he paid $400,000 to Louisiana’s former governor to win a riverboat casino license.

DeBartolo Jr. avoided jail time, but was fined $1 million and given two years’ probation.

The DeBartolo family made their fortune developing shopping malls through the Edward J. DeBartolo Corp., which was started by DeBartolo’s father in 1944.

The family bought the 49ers in 1977 for $13 million and under DeBartolo Jr.’s leadership the team won five Super Bowls in the 1980s and 1990s.

DeBartolo Jr. stepped down as owner of the team after the public corruption scandal erupted and transferred ownership of the team to his sister, Denise DeBartolo York, who still runs the team with her son Jed York. Forbes estimates DeBartolo Jr. has a net worth of $2.6 billion.

DeBartolo Jr. still controls a major stake in publicly traded mall giant Simon Property Group, which merged with the DeBartolos’ shopping mall business in 1996. He also runs a Florida-based property development and investment firm that owns apartments, hotels and retail and industrial space across the country. Despite the controversy surrounding his conviction, DeBartolo Jr. was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2016. DeBartolo Jr. was also accused of sexually assaulting a cocktail waitress at a party in his Menlo Park condo in 1992. He was never charged, denied wrongdoing and reportedly paid $200,000 to settle the case out of court, according to a 1999 profile of the magnate in the San Francisco Examiner.

Why do people post stuff without reading the thread? Every 5 posts is a repeat of information we have already heard, sometimes like 5 different times. It’s ridiculous.

It’s like people just want to post things but don’t care if they actually inform someone. I would like to know what the point of posting constantly making posts with zero concern to what happens next?

I have a theory as to why, and it has to do with getting some satisfaction out of the actual posting and hitting post button than communicating or sharing information.

Coronavirus can cause heart injury even for those without underlying issues: study

The research, published last Friday in the journal JAMA Cardiology, found that 19.7% of a group of 416 infected patients hospitalized in Wuhan, China, suffered damage to their hearts.

“We know that the cardiac injury risk is there, no matter if you had prior heart disease or not,” lead author Dr. Mohammad Madjid, who is an assistant professor of cardiology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, told Healthline.

The study also determined that the death rate was much higher for patients who experienced heart issues. There were 51% of the cases with cardiac problems who died compared to 4.5% of those without, researchers said.

“In my experience, I realized that more people actually die of heart disease rather than [the complication of] pneumonia, so that [the study findings] was not a surprise for me — that from China, that myocardial injuries are very much related to death in these patients,” Madjid said.

Dr. Sreenivas Gudimetla, a cardiologist at Texas Health Fort Worth and Texas Health Physicians Group, said doctors can alter care for patients to combat the effects of the virus on the heart.

“Without a vaccine for a cure from the infection, only aggressive, supportive care can be rendered, such as maintenance of blood pressure, treating heart failure with drugs, treating secondary infections, support of renal function, and support of respiratory status, which can require ventilators,” he told Healthline.

Coronavirus could travel 27 feet, stay in air for hours: MIT researcher

Social-distancing guidelines to stay 6 feet from others may be woefully inadequate, one scientist warns — saying the coronavirus could travel 27 feet and linger for hours.

MIT associate professor Lydia Bourouiba, who has researched the dynamics of coughs and sneezes for years, warns in newly published research that the current guidelines are based on outdated models from the 1930s.

Rather than the assumed safety of 6 foot, Bourouiba warns that “pathogen-bearing droplets of all sizes can travel 23 to 27 feet.”

Her research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, also warns that “droplets that settle along the trajectory can contaminate surfaces” — and “residues or droplet nuclei” may “stay suspended in the air for hours.”

She notes a 2020 report from China that showed that “virus particles could be found in the ventilation systems in hospital rooms of patients with COVID-19.”

Bourouiba fears that the current guidelines are “overly simplified” and “may limit the effectiveness of the proposed interventions” against the deadly pandemic.

She says it is particularly urgent for health care workers who, she argues in her report, face an “underappreciated potential exposure range” while treating the sick and dying.

“There’s an urgency in revising the guidelines currently being given by the [World Health Organization] and the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] on the needs for protective equipment, particularly for the frontline health care workers,” Bourouiba told USA Today.

The World Health Organization — which suggests 3 feet is enough to remain safe — told USA Today it “welcomed” studies.

“WHO carefully monitors emerging evidence about this critical topic and will update this scientific brief as more information becomes available,” WHO said in a statement to the paper.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday blamed the Democrats’ push to impeach President Trump in January for distracting the Trump administration from the threat posed by coronavirus.

“It came up while we were tied down in the impeachment trial. And I think it diverted the attention of the government because everything every day was all about impeachment,” McConnell said in an interview on “The Hugh Hewitt Show.”

At least 66 doctors in Italy have died during coronavirus pandemic From CNN's Sharon Braithwaite and Nicola Ruotolo

Five more doctors have died in Italy from coronavirus, the Italian Federation of doctors said on Tuesday.

There have now been at least 66 deaths of doctors since the outbreak in Italy started.

At least 8,956 health care workers have been infected with Covid-19. That’s an increase of more that 500 cases in the past few days.

New Orleans is preparing for a "significant amount of deaths," official says

From CNN's Adrienne Vogt

A New Orleans official said the city is readying for an uptick in coronavirus-related deaths. There are currently 1,480 coronavirus cases and 86 deaths in New Orleans.

In a community of about 400,000 people, the Louisiana city is tracking at about 5% mortality rate, Collin Arnold, director of the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said.

“That’s high. And our population has a higher rate of underlying health conditions. We're preparing for a significant amount of hospitalizations and unfortunately, a corresponding significant amount of deaths,” Arnold said.

He added that he thinks the stay-at-home mandate is still working and is necessary to flatten the curve in coronavirus cases. He said 1,000 beds in the convention center will be ready by the end of the week to free up space in hospitals for the expected surge in coronavirus patients.

[quote]Just say it with me: It's Donald Trump's fault!!!!

Trump has certainly exacerbated the crisis. But the crisis would be greatly ameliorated if everyone would just stay home. And too many of us are not. Obviously, Trump and his acolytes are to blame for minimizing the risks as they were accelerating, but now we all know just how dangerous social proximity is -- yet look at the crowds that gathered to watch the hospital ship come into the harbor in NYC yesterday. And NYC is ground zero for this thing, you'd think if anyone would get it, it would be a New Yorker. Don't even get me started with the idiot red-state governors like Ron DeSantis.

by Anonymousreply 473March 31, 2020 3:19 PM

I just have to get this off my chest. Part of it is frustration, part of it is irrational fear.

So I walk my dog, briefly, in the morning and then a good walk late at night when there is no one around. But in the mornings there are more people. I am diligent about getting out of their way. Today, I am walking down the sidewalk and around the bend comes one of my neighbours, jogging. He’s about two feet from the curb. As he passes he greets me and exhales. So there’s probably five feet between us? Close to the recommended six. Even so I’m all freaked out and counting fourteen days now. He had plenty of room to move further away.

Now I know most of my fear is irrational. There is limited belief that an encounter that brief would infect me. The risk of aerosolized transmission in that encounter is limited (and generally, everything I read is the risk if of someone coughing or sneezing.). It is unlikely he wasn’t feeling well because who’s going to jog in that instance? I saw that video with the Cornell doctor on here (thanks, Fowler) who stressed mind your hands, wash your hands, don’t touch your face and that transmission is due largely to sustained contact, which a passing jogger isn’t likely to be. But still, keep a fucking distance when you can. DON’T EXHALE (OK, kidding on that one.)

So, that’s off my chest. Ideally not in it. Christ, what a way to live. Am I the only one feeling both frightened and nuts?

by Anonymousreply 480March 31, 2020 3:55 PM

R474, I was in the grocery store this morning, went early around 7, and there was virtually no one in there. That said, there was an older man wearing a mask who I saw entering the cereal aisle at one end, so I thought okay, let me go around the other way. Well, lo and behold, he apparently had the same idea (to avoid me as I was avoiding him) and what happens? We end up running into each other at the opposite end of the aisle. Didn't actually physically collide, exchanged polite excuse me's, went around each other and that was that. But still, like you, the thought crosses your mind -- was an encounter like that just enough to do it? The intellectual side of me says of course not but the emotional side of me still flashes on it and thinks "What if?" But I will go out on a limb here and say that you and I are both fine and letting our imaginations get the better of us.

What a way to live.

SF CHRONICLE: The captain of a nuclear aircraft carrier with more than 100 sailors infected with the coronavirus pleaded Monday with U.S. Navy officials for resources to allow isolation of his entire crew and avoid possible deaths in a situation he described as quickly deteriorating.

In the four-page letter to senior military officials, Crozier said only a small contingent of infected sailors have been off-boarded. Most of the crew remain aboard the ship, where following official guidelines for 14-day quarantines and social distancing is impossible.

“Due to a warship’s inherent limitations of space, we are not doing this,” Crozier wrote. “The spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating.”

He asked for “compliant quarantine rooms” on shore in Guam for his entire crew “as soon as possible.”

Your local governments and public health agencies matter a lot during times of emergency, and this is where they prove their worth or uselessness. Here in SF there was state of emergency declared on February 25. Industry leaders too acted proactively, many companies told their employees to work from home if that was a possibility. Warnings were issued about social distancing early on and for the most part there was great awareness of these advisories. Schools here were closed quite early on as well. People here in the SF Bay Area also took the news and mitigating factors for spread seriously. Hopefully when this is over, people in NYC will hold their city government officials responsible, get rid of cronyism in the city government and public health departments because they have failed NYC.

Cancer-ridden DJ dies from coronavirus, told docs to ‘save someone else’

A British DJ who was battling leukemia — and then tested positive for the coronavirus — died after telling doctors to “save someone else’s life” and not give him any more medication, according to his family.

Liam Downing, who turned 30 just five days before his death, learned that he had contracted COVID-19 after being admitted to the hospital with a suspected infection on March 16, Metro UK reported.

At that time, doctors informed him there was nothing else they could do to cure his cancer, which he’d been battling for two years, the outlet reported.

So on March 21, Downing decided to decline any further medication, because he didn’t want to further burden the country’s National Health Service, his family said.

“Liam had [spoken] with the specialist about what his options were,” his sister Laura said on a GoFundMe page to help pay for his burial expenses. “By the end of the conversation Liam had made the brave decision not to have any more medication and to just be made as comfortable and given end of life care instead.”

“This came as a massive shock to all of our family and friends but that was Liam’s wish,” she wrote. “He had fought the battle for as long as he could with leukemia and did not want to waste any more of the NHS money and selflessly said, ‘save someone else’s life with it.”

Laura also paid tribute to her brother in a now-viral Facebook post.

“Expecting Liam to have at least a few months he started making a bucket list of things he wanted to do before he died,” she wrote. “To then be told he had coronavirus was just devastating. He was never going to do what he wanted to.”

“We were uncertain whether he was going to see his 30th birthday [and] I’m so thankful he did,” she continued. “I’m so unbelievably proud of you Liam! You fought so long and hard but now’s your time to relax! You’re now out of pain!”

More than 22,400 COVID-19 cases and 1,400 deaths have been reported in the UK, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Many countries, including Italy and Spain, keep referring to a decline in the number of new cases as a sign that things are improving. Meanwhile the number of deaths has either remained constant or has increased. Unfortunately the number of new cases is unreliable due to (1) lack of universal testing (2) is solely dependent on people who show up at hospitals with symptoms and meet the criteria to get a test. Unfortunately, the only thing that we can really look at is the number of deaths. And it is not getting better at the moment.

Coronavirus lingers in air after patients leave room, study finds

The coronavirus can be found lingering in the air even when patients are not in the room, according to a new study.

Scientists found traces of the virus in rooms and outside hallways at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where patients who were diagnosed were put into isolation, according to the report on MedRxiv.

“We also did identify a number of samples that detected the virus genes in the air, which confirmed for us the value in prioritizing respiratory protection when possible and prioritizing negative-pressure environments to provide direct patient care to these individuals,” said co-author John Lowe, who is vice chancellor for Interprofessional Health Security Training and Education, in a statement.

The study, which has not been peer-reviewed, collected air samples from 11 hospital rooms and found high levels of concentration of the virus.

Samples from hallways outside of rooms where hospital employees had come in and out of the doors were also positive, the report said.

Researchers said the study doesn’t evaluate whether the virus is contagious in the air, but reinforces the need for personal protective equipment for medical staff until there are more conclusive findings on the subject.

“Studies like these are needed to understand proper precautions for health care workers, first responders and others who care for the ill and are needed to combat this pandemic,” said co-author Joshua Santarpia, who is an associate professor of pathology and microbiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

“This ongoing work will continue to improve our understanding of… transmission and help identify ways to improve safety in the care of patients with this disease.”

The World Health Organization has insisted that the virus is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets, such as coughs and sneezes.

This means that the early, proactive measures and people abiding by directives are working. This is what we need to tell the fucking idiots in NYC who showed up to watch the hospital ship dock. Social distancing works and now we have the results to show for it. Per the article linked below "on March 23rd, residents moved just a few feet from their home. Overall, that is a 99% reduction in movement over two weeks." Social distancing and stay-in-place are more effective than masks which those of us in healthcare know isn't foolproof.

Oregon veteran, 95, beats coronavirus: ‘I survived Guam, I can get through this bulls–t’

A 95-year-old World War II vet living in Oregon has beaten COVID-19, according to a report.

Bill Kelly, of McMinnville, finished his recovery Monday at the home he shares with four relatives after being diagnosed with the coronavirus on March 17, The Oregonian reports.

“Grandpa Bill’s pretty hardcore,” his granddaughter, Rose Ayers-Etherington, 41, told the newspaper.

Kelly, who lived through the Great Depression and was among the first US soldiers to set foot in the South Pacific during WWII, started feeling unwell with a low-grade fever on March 15, the newspaper reports.

Due to several underlying medical conditions, including kidney disease, a congenital heart condition and high blood pressure, Kelly went to a hospital and was kept overnight, Ayers-Etherington said.

Kelly returned home the following day after his condition improved, but his granddaughter’s husband — who works as a medical evacuation pilot — had recently transported patients who were potentially exposed to COVID-19.

That led doctors to test Kelly for the virus out of an abundance of caution despite his mild symptoms, his granddaughter said.

Ayers-Etherington’s husband, Isaac, is the only other person who has been tested for COVID-19 in the home they share with her grandfather, her mother, husband, and their two children — ages 5 and 11 months. Her husband’s test came back negative, the newspaper reports.

No one in the home developed any symptoms as Kelly spent the first week in isolation in a bedroom. Relatives disinfected any surface he touched and did their best to steer entirely clear of him when he left the bedroom while wearing a mask, relatives said.

“But it was still nerve-wracking,” Ayers-Etherington said. “We were just drinking hot tea all the time. Taking zinc. Washing our hands constantly.”

Isaac Etherington, 42, said they treated Kelly “like a leper” during his first seven days of isolation.

But Kelly — who is known to be “tough as nails,” according to his granddaughter — bunkered down with plenty of classic movies and copious amounts of water and rest.

“We’re going just fine here,” Kelly told the newspaper. “We’re toughing it out. I’ve got two great-grandsons to keep me busy. I’ve been very fortunate.”

In a Facebook post earlier this month, Ayers-Etherington revealed her grandfather’s diagnosis but added he was “kicking it in the butt” despite a litany of pre-existing medical conditions.

“In his words, ‘I survived the foxholes of Guam, I can get through this [coronavirus] bull—-,'” she wrote. “He has strong mental resolve. He has seen tough times and knows how to get through them.”

Ayers-Etherington said she was in no way downplaying the “seriousness” of COVID-19.

“It’s real and it’s here and it needs to be respected,” she wrote.

“Just hoping grandpa Bill’s story will encourage you and put a smile on your face. Also, the rest of us are healthy.”

The numbers from China and the US, under TRUMP, are completely bogus and can not in ANYWAY be trusted

Guardian-The US has more confirmed cases of coronavirus infection than China, according to official statistics given by both countries that in all likelihood mask the true rates of infection in either. The US now has 3,415 deaths from the virus, surpassing China’s figure of 3,309, according to the tally kept by Johns Hopkins University. However, there are doubts about the accuracy of both countries’ figures, with the US having been slow to start widespread testing and China suspected to have hidden the true extent of its outbreak.

It’s interesting the Cuomo writes in his statement: ‘I have been exposed to people in recent days’. You could interpret that to mean he’s developed symptoms after comparatively recent exposure, which would confirm that if you’re gonna get symptoms you tend to get them sooner rather than later.

I have seen the 5.2 mark called the media but also the average (which by definition it isn’t.) But seems like while nothing is guaranteed in most cases if you fear you have been exposed you can breathe a little easier by day six. (Probably the worst cliche I could have used.) And similarly the one constant I have read is that 97% of those who become symptomatic have become so by day 11. So again if you think you are exposed and you get through the eleventh day from the date you think it happened, you’re probably good.

What is the point of the bailout if companies like United will only defer trips to a later date? Eventually, they will still collect their money.

The head of the state’s funeral directors association fears New York City could soon see dead bodies piling up due to the surge in coronavirus deaths combined with limits on cemetery shifts.

New York State Funeral Directors Association director Mike Lanotte said religious cemeteries, including ones run by the Archdiocese of New York, have put protocols in place to protect staff working in cemeteries that have led to less manpower.

“They’re not able to bury as many people in a day as they normally would and that’s a concern because if there’s a large number of cemeteries that start to do this, we’re going to start to have — for lack of a better word — a bottleneck,” Lanotte told The Post.

“You’re going to have people’s caskets, remains, unable to be buried and that could create a backlog and a public health problem.

“No one wants to see pictures like in Italy of churches with caskets stacked in them,” said Lanotte, who represents 1,700 funeral homes statewide.

A spokesman for the archdiocese did not immediately return messages.

Some of the city’s funeral homes are already “stretched to capacity” and others are “helping twice as many families as they normally would,” Lanotte said.

“There’s also unfortunately been some funeral directors who have fallen ill from COVID, adding a little bit of extra stress to the system,” he said.

The city currently has space for about 3,500 bodies after adding mobile morgues to handle coronavirus deaths.

Italy health official says nation hit ‘plateau’ 3 weeks after lockdown

Italy has hit a “plateau” in the coronavirus pandemic — just three weeks after going into lockdown, one of the country’s top health officials said Tuesday.

Dr. Silvio Brusaferro, chief of Italy’s national institutes of health, said the hardest-hit country in Europe has started to see the rate of new infections slowing down.

But despite the downward trend, Brusaferro stressed that it would be premature to lift any lockdown restrictions.

“The curve suggests we are at the plateau,” Brusaferro said. “We have to confirm it, because arriving at the plateau doesn’t mean we have conquered the peak and we’re done. It means now we should start to see the decline if we continue to place maximum attention on what we do every day.”

There were 4,053 new COVID-19 cases announced on Tuesday compared with 4,050 the previous day, officials said.

Italy has reported more than 101,000 infections, causing at least 12,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

But Brusaferro acknowledged Tuesday that the death toll is likely higher than the official figures, which don’t include people who died at home, in nursing homes and those who were infected by the virus but not tested.

“It is plausible that deaths are underestimated,” he said.

“We report deaths that are signaled with a positive swab. Many other deaths are not tested with a swab.”

BBC-The captain of a US aircraft carrier is pleading for help amid a Covid-19 outbreak on his vessel. There are more than 4,000 crew members aboard the Theodore Roosevelt and scores have tested positive for the virus - at least 100 sailors, according to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper. "We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die," Captain Brett Crozier wrote in a letter to the Pentagon, adding that the spread was "ongoing and accelerating" and could not be contained. The carrier is currently docked in Guam. Cramped, communal conditions on vessels like the Theodore Roosevelt make it difficult to maintain social distancing measures

About fucking time. The information from China is flawed and completely useless

CNN-Chinese health authorities will include asymptomatic cases of the novel coronavirus in their official count starting Wednesday, according to an announcement on Tuesday. The move during growing public concern over asymptomatic cases, of which 1,541 were under medical observation in China by the end of Monday, according to the National Health Commission (NHC). This includes including 205 cases imported from overseas. Officials will further tighten screening and quarantine rules targeting asymptomatic cases -- defined as people who have tested positive for the virus without displaying any symptoms -- said Chang Jile, a senior official with the NHC, at a press conference in Wuhan.

Yes, but it's not likely that you wouldn't have to pay it at some point, so why take take the chance unless you really just don't have it? My asshole landlord gave me a rent raise at the beginning of March to begin Apr 1 and had her filthy had out for it already three days ago. While I thankfully do have money to pay my rent this month, I haven't had any money come in for three weeks so it would have been nice for her to say- don't worry about the increase until this is all over. But she's a money grubbing cunt who runs a shithole building and would love to evict everyone so she could start over and double our rents. (And I've only been here 2 1/2 years so I'm not paying less than market value.)

Russian doctor who met Putin last week diagnosed with coronavirus

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A doctor who gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a tour of Moscow’s main coronavirus hospital last week said on Tuesday he had himself been diagnosed with the virus.

Putin visited the Kommunarka hospital last Tuesday where he chatted to the doctor, Denis Protsenko. Neither man was wearing protective equipment during their conversation, TV footage from the visit showed.

Protsenko, writing on Facebook said: “Yes, I have tested positive for coronavirus, but I feel pretty good. I’ve isolated myself in my office. I think the immunity I’ve developed this month is doing its job.”

The Kremlin said that Putin was being regularly tested for coronavirus and that “everything is okay,” the RIA news agency reported.

It has previously said that Putin is being protected from viruses and other illnesses “around the clock”.

Enough already. Shut them down now for the remainder of the school year. It's not like they're actually going back, and summer sessions are out of the question.

It really is going to have last effects on the kids who are struggling academically - and socially - and I worry about how our ad hoc distance learning is going to reach some of the kids who need help the most. Louisiana sees over 1,200 new coronavirus cases in one day

Louisiana suffered its worst day yet in the state’s coronavirus outbreak Tuesday, with more than 50 deaths and 1,200 new cases, according to health officials.

The newly diagnosed 2,212 cases brought the state’s tally to 5,237 cases, representing a 30% increase in 24 hours, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.

Within the same period, 54 died from the virus, pushing its death toll to 239 and marking its deadliest day since the Pelican State’s first case was found on March 9.

Health officials have now detected the dangerous bug in 60 out of the state’s 64 parishes, which are similar to counties.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said Monday that he will extend the state’s stay-at-home order through the end of April, which is in line with the White House’s most recent guidance.

The state ranks among the 10 hardest-hit in the country as the virus spreads to more than 177,000 Americans, according to John Hopkins University.

New York, the worst hit state, has more than 75,000 cases and 1,550 deaths. The Empire State is home to more than 19 million residents, while Louisiana has around 4.6 million people.

by Anonymousreply 573March 31, 2020 10:04 PM

Just remember, it was always going to accelerate like this. These infections happened up to two weeks ago before most people were social distancing and locked down. What should happen next is a plateauing and decline in the areas that locked down when they were supposed to. So, we've all been waiting for this inevitable rise and now it's happened. Now, we wait for the decline which is a better thing to be waiting for, right?

Cupcake culture. Too many women as gatekeepers and decision makers from the top down. In my opinion, we're seeing the results of their having risen to their levels of incompetence. They are passive, breathless, and mostly impotent. If more men were in control -- in a traditional, testosterone-driven, kick-ass, take-no-prisoners culture -- we'd see a lot more being done to deal with Covid-19 and more being done faster. In fact, we would have been better prepared to deal with this disaster in the first place, in my opinion. I will further add that Trump would have been removed from his office post-impeachment in such a culture.
