Emma Stone and Dave McCary postpone their wedding amid coronavirus outbreak
The Oscar-winning actress, 31, and McCary, 34, were set to tie the knot in Los Angeles over the weekend, but are holding off for now. As Page Six previously reported, the couple didn’t reveal the location of the planned nuptials on their wedding invitation.

r67 he was slapping down the Republican Governor in OH. There are two arguments here that seem valid. The CDC states that people can safely vote if they practice the suggested safety precautions. Grocery stores in OH have had lines every day for the past week.
Despite voter suppression, America has a wonderful record on timely elections. We really don't postpone election often in this country. If a primary can be postponed by the governor and health agency, without a guarantee that things will be batter with their suggested new date, then what's stopping this from happening in November? If there is a case in Nov, will the governor be able to circumvent the US Congress and the Constitution to postpone those elections as well? I think the governor waited until the last minute, but he and the judicial branch needed to answer this fundamental question about the powers of the governor and OH's health agencies. It was good that it was challenged.
Second thought, the governor is within his right to do measures to protect the public. The OH Supreme Court made the correct ruling. We should applaud OH for having a functioning government that can tackle difficult decisions with reasoning and science. I know there was confusion, but we DO NOT want to live in a country or state where a governor just pushes of an election date, already codified into OH law, without someone stepping up to challenge the legality of the action.

A study out this week finds that the virus can survive on hard surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours and on cardboard for up to 24 hours.
[quote]Interestingly, some surfaces are less hospitable to SARS-CoV-2. For instance, the virus remained viable on copper for only about four hours.

My two cents - people should specify what "cancel school" means. My university has suspended classes on campus and there is a HUGE rush now that the semester is NOT CANCELLED and we must find a way to progress students to the next semester, the next year. School is not "cancelled".
If a state is cancelling obligatory school, it seems like a big cheat to students and taxpayers. I am sure those students do not want to repeat a year. Parents will freak out, too!

K through 12th Grade are CANCELLED, R134.
They will be back in August or September.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | March 18, 2020 6:33 PM |
My school district explained that the semester is just over now, everyone passes (K trhough 12) unless the parents request a child redo their current grade.
It's OVER, not "suspended" and will pick up in August. The school year os OVER. It ended a little early.
Texas has already done away with this year's mandatory testing as well as graduation requirements.
It's over. No make-up, just moving on to the next grade.

My friend is a teacher in Louisville. He said colleges are going online in the area but the K-12 schools don’t have the infrastructure (laptops for every kid with internet access) to switch over to online courses this quickly . They are deciding if they should cancel the remainder of year. I used to volunteer at a Library, there was always an afternoon rush from kids whose parents didn’t have reliable internet access. This is one of barriers school districts are grappling with. I say call of the year if this last till August as Trump suggests or the Fed will need to start a laptop program with free internet cards.
Honestly, a loss of a couple of months won’t kill kids. It can be made up.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | March 18, 2020 6:38 PM |
The kids aren't learning anything now anyway.
This is the end of the year which is for mandatory testing, which Texas did away with earlier this week for this school year.
NOTHING else is going on. It's just daycare for K-12 from now till the end of May.
There's nothing to make up.

We better hope these projected unemployment numbers aren’t correct or we will have a second generation of unemployed college graduates and a number of HS seniors withdraw their college acceptance letters. If we thought Millennials were cynical, wait until Zoomers feel this hit. It will be insufferable, coupled we with the Millennials votes, the 20’ might be a gigantic change decade.
But I’d rather just have a normal short recession and get things back to normal.

NOT CANCELED: Vegas Strippers.
Little Darlings strip club will begin offering drive-through strip shows for those who want to indulge in some adult entertainment, but do not want to enter the building. “Guests can drive up to the front door and we’re going to have dancers separate by the 6-foot separation rule and they can enjoy a totally nude show right from the seat of their car," says director of operations Ryan Carlson. Ten-minute shows cost $100.
Patrons can still go into the club: “On Saturday we’re doing nude triple-X hand sanitizer wrestling,” Carlson said. “We have about 20 gallons of hand sanitizer, and we’re doing a cool nude hand sanitizer wrestling show.”

Seriously r162? $100 would make someone a king for an hour or two on OnlyFans or Just4Fans. These guys need to get with the times. Many cam models are getting so desperate that Just4Fans had to send a tweet begging people to keep watching and tipping. Just4Fans received a number of emails from performers reeling from the sudden drop in revenue. Many had service industry day jobs, so they’ve had the floor pulled out from under them this week.
I’ve noticed a lot of performers, old and new, blowing up social media. The longer this goes on, the more desperate many of these cam workers will get. Rather ironic since more people are sitting at home.

Met Opera lays off all musicians, chorus amid coronavirus shutdown
The Metropolitan Opera laid off many of its employees, including its musicians and chorus in the wake of the coronavirus shutdown.
The sobering news comes as nearly every facet of arts and entertainment shuts down, with audiences forced to stay inside and artists themselves fighting the spread of the deadly virus. The Met reportedly let go of its unionized staff this week, according to NPR.
The Met, whose 2019 budget was $312 million, is reportedly the nation’s single largest performing arts organization. Five days ago, citing the coronovirus pandemic, it canceled all rehearsals and performances through March 31. Opera lovers were told that the value of their tickets for the canceled March 14 performance of “Cosi Fan Tutte” would be credited to their Met Opera account.
On Monday, the Met announced that it would screen its “Live in HD” broadcasts free nightly through its website to keep the music alive.
The company, under manager Peter Gelb, has long run on a deficit. No word yet on when or if its season would continue.
A post on the Middle Class Artist website said the company informed its contracted soloists that they wouldn’t be paid through the closure.

While remaining hopeful that this isn’t a long-term situation, we have decided, after careful consideration, to extend our closures beyond the originally stated date of March 31. As of now, all NYPL branches and research libraries will be closed until further notice to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Due to the rapidly-changing nature of this public health crisis, the Library feels it is best to keep our reopening date open-ended, rather than share hypothetical dates that, by necessity, might need to shift. Regarding the libraries ... For about three years, I used to work as a substitute (public) librarian on Saturday, but finally gave it up because of how many people would camp out in the reading rooms and/or use the bathrooms -- many of whom already looked like they were sick and contagious with something. (Then, there are the totally deranged and mentally unstable.) I finally decided I couldn't risk my own health, which could impact my regular, full-time, M-F job. IOC finally postponing Olympics 2020 because of coronavirus pandemic
International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound told USA Today on Monday the Summer Olympics in Tokyo will be postponed and probably won’t happen until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound told USA Today. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”
Pressure had been mounting on the IOC to move the Summer Olympics, and on Sunday it acknowledged it was considering doing so as Canada and Australia announced they would not send athletes to Tokyo if the Games went ahead as scheduled.

Boeing temporarily closes Washington state factory over coronavirus risks
Boeing said on Monday it will halt production temporarily at its Washington state twin-aisle jetliner factory due to risks from coronavirus, confirming an earlier Reuters report.
Following a similar move by European rival Airbus, Boeing said a temporary operations shutdown at its facilities across Seattle’s Puget Sound region will last 14 days beginning March 25. It will include a deep clean of its buildings and equipment.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has disrupted life across the US, hammering the economy and virtually wiping out air travel demand. It has also compounded a crisis over the year-old grounding of Boeing’s best-selling 737 Max jetliner after fatal crashes.

Next iPhone launch may be delayed by coronavirus
The Cupertino, California-based tech giant has announced its latest smartphone in September every year since it was first released in 2007, but supply chain disruptions and travel restrictions may change that, according to Japanese news service Nikkei.
The outlet reports that Apple has held internal discussions about potentially “delaying the launch by months,” and cites sources within Apple’s supply chain which say that “practical hurdles” may also have a hand in delaying the release.
Apple traditionally needs to send engineers back and forth from its offices to its factories in China to finalize designs in the lead-up to the product’s release. But the coronavirus has led Apple to restrict employee travel to hotbeds of the disease, including China.
Apple’s next iPhone is expected to introduce 5G technology, which allows for significantly faster network speeds.
An iPhone delay would be far from the first Apple event to be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, which has sickened more than 400,000 people around the world.
Apple last week announced of new versions of its iPad Pro, Mac Mini and MacBook Air devices via a press release, rather than its traditional March keynote. The devices are available to purchase online only, because the company last week also said that it was extending the closures of all its retail stores outside of China “until further notice” due to the pandemic.
To the surprise of some analysts, Apple’s release last week skipped the rollout of a lower-priced version of the iPhone, which may be called the iPhone 9.
The company earlier this month also canceled the in-person portions of its annual WWDC developer conference, which it said would instead take place in an “entirely new format.”
WWDC is one of Apple’s most important events of the year, where it unveils new features for its iPhones, iPads and Macs, as well as shows off the latest version of its iOS software.

Florida governor says he doesn't regret leaving beaches open during spring break
From CNN’s Melissa Alonso
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says questions about his decision to not to issue a statewide mandate closing Florida's beaches during spring break is "more of a political issue."
The New York City subway is being "packed like sardines," but a family sitting outside in "sunshine, heat and humidity, that's not as big as a problem," DeSantis said.
"Do you hear the same people complaining about the New York City subway system being open? I mean, give me a break. Which one is more conducive to having Covid-19 spread or any respiratory virus? It's not even close," DeSantis said in response to keep beaches open.
DeSantis says he did impose "10-person limit" for groups and local officials maintained limited access to beaches for residents. Several Florida beaches were closed by local officials in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties.
On Friday, DeSantis said he's suspending vacation rentals in Florida for the next two weeks and is planning to extend an executive order to require travelers coming from Louisiana to Florida to do a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine or isolation period. The order currently applies to travelers coming to Florida from airports in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Wimbledon has been cancelled for the first time since the Second World War, with All England Club chiefs making the tough decision at an emergency board meeting on Wednesday.

Following the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s mid-March decision to close its doors and postpone the glitzy ball “indefinitely” in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Met announced on Tuesday that this year’s event has been called off entirely.
The Costume Institute’s “About Time: Fashion and Duration” exhibit, which would have set the theme for the 2020 fête, is still set to open on October 29 and run through February 7, 2021. The Met now plans to reopen around mid-August, although all talks, tours, concerts and events have been canceled through the end of the year.
A spokeswoman for the Met told WWD that the 2021 gala will be focused on next year’s Costume Institute exhibition, which has not yet been announced.
When it was initially announced that the Vogue-hosted bash wouldn’t take place on the usual date, fashion-hungry fans sprang into action, recreating iconic looks from past Met Galas at home. Celebrities like Mindy Kaling and Adam Rippon got in on the fun, too — and Katy Perry even shared a glimpse at the baby bump-accommodating look she’d planned to wear on the big night.
Time to start looking forward to the first Monday of next May.
