BREAKING - World Figure Skating Championships CANCELED
“With the uncertainty surrounding the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Skate Canada and the International Skating Union (ISU), were informed today by the Government of Quebec that they have cancelled the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2020,” Skate Canada said in an email statement. “Any fan who has purchased tickets directly from the official ticket provider Evenko will receive details on the refund process in due course.”
The ISU left open the possibility of scheduling world championships this fall.
“Considering the current uncertain developments surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic, a rescheduling and/or relocation of the above-mentioned Championships within the current season, even if the season would be extended by several weeks after its normal end in early April, cannot be reasonably considered,” the ISU announced. “During the coming weeks, the ISU will evaluate in cooperation with all stakeholders whether the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2020 could possibly be held later in the year, but in any case not before October 2020.”

R202 those are the individual conference tournaments that determine the league's automatic entry to the NCAA tournament. The individual conferences have control over their own tournament so can decide to cancel, play to an empty stadium (as several were planning to do) or play with a crowd, separate from any decision the NCAA makes for the main tournament. The plan as of now is to play the NCAA tournaments (men and women) with only essential staff and family members in the stands, but my guess is they will cave and cancel.

Sort of like the colleges-- once Chappaqua and Summit and Westport shut down, everyone else feels pressured to do the same because who wants to be the school district that let kids go to school and then everyone in town came down with it.
Plus parents working from home and college kids home so why are high schoolers still at it.

Typically the delays with school closings are due to the number of kids that rely on the schools for food and daytime shelter. NYC alone has almost 110k homeless or hungry children. So when a school is hesitant to close for say a snow day, often it’s because they know that a silent minority of children suffer.
In this instance, nothing can be done, but I hope those babies are taken care of.

Amazon is blocking new listings for face masks, hand sanitizer and other coronavirus-related products on its site, marking its latest effort to stamp out price gouging.

I was just at Trader Joe's in Silverlake (LA), it most certainly looks like the apocalypse in there. Empty shelves throughout the store.
Meanwhile across the street at Gelsons, people are shopping and some have loaded carts but no empty shelves. Maybe it's just better management or the people that can afford to do their main grocery shopping there aren't panicking.

Coronavirus school closings: Ohio, Maryland become first states to shut all K-12 schools
All K-12 schools in Ohio will be shut down for three weeks starting Monday to try to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced Thursday.
The move will affect approximately 1.8 million children enrolled in Ohio's public, charter and private schools.
Shortly after the Ohio announcement, Maryland's superintendent announced the state's schools would close for two weeks starting Monday.
The actions are the most sweeping school closure efforts in the U.S. so far and stand to disrupt just about everything related to family and school routines.
Seattle Public Schools on Wednesday became the first major metropolitan school district to announce it would cancel all classes to contain the spread of the virus. The district, which serves about 54,000 students, will be closed for at least two weeks starting Thursday. School officials told parents to plan as if they were entering an extended spring break.
In addition, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Thursday ordered all K-12 schools in three of the state's counties worst hit by the virus — King, Pierce and Snohomish — to close from at least March 17 to April 3.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has advised schools that if an infection is detected in the community, school leaders should consult with their local health departments about when to close.
But as the virus has spread this week, school and political leaders have taken more aggressive actions. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear on Thursday recommended but did not mandate public and private schools close for two weeks starting Monday.
DeWine said on Twitter Thursday that he knew the move would impact families in a major way.
"We understand the sacrifice this will entail, but this is the right thing to do," he said.
DeWine added that the state needed to do everything it can to slow the spread of the virus.
Still, many parents complained on social media Thursday, saying that closing schools would put additional pressures on parents, especially those with low incomes, by putting their jobs at risk.

There are rumors that IML (International Mr. Leather) will be postponed/cancelled - contrary to the “we are evaluating/monitoring” statement on the site.
Although I love it as a Chicagoland native and a bit of a kinkster- I think it might be a good idea not to have the usual amount of bodily fluids at that event spreading around during a pandemic, especially given that a good percentage of the contestants (friends, partners, family) and visitors are flying in from all corners of the globe.

With places like Museums, Art Galleries - are they been closed for legal reasons (potential for being sued later on for being a contagion site), for economic reasons (don't have to pay staff given no one is going) or are they being forced to close by government decree?
by Anonymous | reply 330 | March 13, 2020 7:11 AM |
Doesn't seem to be a blanket nor straight answer to your last query.
Cultural institutions here in NYC employ various persons from hourly/salaried to contract performing artists (musicians, dancers, actors, etc....) where compensation likely is spelled out by agreement.
Stands to reason if governor of a state orders places closed, then he or state needs to come up with a way to make people whole. Places are talking about being shut for two, three or more weeks. Few employed people can go that long without paychecks.

I wonder if next week they will bite the bullet and close most commerce, like Italy. I doubt it. Only if the numbers get as bad as Italy.

All of the NYC Union Square Hospitality Group businesses will join the list of restaurants that will temporarily close in light of the COVID-19 crisis, according to staffers at multiple restaurants.
With more than 20 restaurants in multiple cities, the Danny Meyer-run company is one of the biggest groups yet to announce a wider shut down. Restaurants Untitled and the Modern, which attached to museums that announced closures on Thursday, are ending service, but the company’s standalone restaurants will also be temporarily closing their doors. Businesses include fine dining restaurants like Gramercy Tavern, the more casual barbecue spot Blue Smoke, and counter-service cafe Daily Provisions. The D.C. restaurants will also close. Staffers told Eater that exact timing for reopening would be determined later.
“This decision brings with it very real sacrifices for our team, but I feel it is necessary that USHG do our part to prevent the spread of this pandemic,” Meyer said in a statement. “By fully facing this storm today, we all hope to return to serving our community sooner than later.”
Other restaurateurs are opting to shut down instead of staying open at the half-capacity mandated by the state on Thursday, including Eric Ripert, who announced that his luxe seafood tasting restaurant Le Bernardin would also shut down for at least two weeks.

Majority of professional nurses in USA are still female. Of that lot you have married and single mothers who often have child care arrangements down to a finely tuned science. Any wrench thrown into those plans can and likely does cause chaos.
Even for married women nurses aren't immune from same forces that usually mean if someone has to stay home with the children in a dual income family, it is the wife/mother.
Summer and other school vacations are another matter as they can be planned for in advance.
Keep in mind many nurses like other mothers/families already were facing plans for their children over spring break. Some cannot afford to pay a child minder or whatever other arrangements were made for several days or maybe a few weeks of school being shut down in addition to spring recess.

Finally the cunt is doing it!
Coronavirus in NY: NYC schools will close
Mayor Bill de Blasio — facing a coup from parents and teachers over his refusal to close city schools amid the coronavirus –has finally succumbed to the mounting pressure and agreed to shut them down, well-placed sources told The Post on Sunday.
The closure will occur early in the week, a source added. Gov. Cuomo told 1010 WINS radio that “all schools in downstate New York will be closing,” specifically adding Tuesday or Wednesday.
Hizzoner had been stubbornly repeating his opposition to the move, insisting he was “very reticent” because of such things as leaving healthcare workers to scramble for childcare amid the spread of the coronavirus.
The about-face came soon after The Post published an online editorial Sunday urging him to “close the schools!” — reflecting increasingly harsh criticism over de Blasio’s failure to do what scores of other districts around the metro area, state and country have done to contain the deadly and particularly contagious coronavirus.
The city teachers union had vowed to file a complaint with the state Department of Labor on Monday arguing that the schools were “unsafe” to be in, while Queens Borough President Sharon Lee urged parents to keep their kids home from school even before de Blasio finally made his announcement.
De Blasio was expected to make the announcement at an evening press conference.

There's your proof that the Brahmin class is still running the show, so to speak.

Oh great r524, after an entire weekend of people, like my bumbass friends, doing St. Patrick's Day partying at bars/clubs. The bars should have been closed on Friday, but the IL governor put business profits over public safety. I could not believe that bars were still allowed to pack people in for St. Patrick's Day weekend. But finally schools will be closed. Parents could have had a couple of more days to organize a plan because we should have known that it was going to happen.

I fear for so many of the small restaurant owners. Probably half of restaurants can't survive with 2-3 bad months. A lot of them are going to go out of business. Not to mention the cooks and waitstaff, who live on tips.
Imagine how scary it is with this virus going around AND the fear that you're going to lose your job. It's not like restaurants will be hiring new waiters anytime soon.

r536 this is what the Bernie campaign is banking on. The longer these people suffer the more likely they are to turn to Socialism, in his mind. I don't think it will work, but the Democratic Party has a massive advantage right now. If we get the messaging right we can make these people feel more comfortable voting Blue in November.
Politics aside I work for tips in college to pay my off campus rent. I have a parent, my mother, that would have bailed me out, but there was a time that my mom was unemployed when I was in college. I really feel bad for these people and industries. They've done nothing at all, but their job. Yet an invisible virus is forcing them out of work.

City ordered bars and venues in NYC have been ordered to close. Restaurants are take-out only. No word yet on spas, gyms, and health clubs.
These actions nationwide while perhaps necessary none the less are going to cause serious personal and business economic harm. Calls for various bailouts will start quite soon, though Munchin is saying this administration won't be doing any of that. Yeah, well see how long that lasts.

r551 I'm sure your joking, but I'm getting a small kick out of all these self-important people that saw a crisis brewing, don't forget Europe was a week ahead, Italy almost 2 weeks, yet they carried on with vacation plans. On The Points Guy they were peddling ski resort deals as of Friday. Commenters laughed at the craziness of that idea. One guy said that his fancy resort was shutdown in the middle of his vacation. He was wondering if he should push for a full refund. I believe people should be reimbursed for things but it's absolutely crazy.
Meanwhile, United Airlines is trying to force people to wait 12 months before granting a refund. They'd prefer people just rebook at a later time in the year. I think our airlines will be on the brink of bankruptcy. I will be calling my elected officials when the dust settles and beg them to keep these open.
My father's job is already laying off staff. He and my stepmom live paycheck to paycheck. I willing trying to help but I just started a job and wondering if I will also be let go. This will be a very hard week for everyone.

We will begin a major clean-up for at least the next two weeks. We can guarantee that when Mr. Schock's gaping hole is finally re-opened for business, it will be much cleaner and safer, and much less brown."
