Coronavirus Freakout 15: This will have to do

NBC, CBS, TBS, HBO and Comedy Central have all announced that they will now shoot their New York-based late-night programs without an audience.
Among the shows affected are some of the late-night world’s most prominent: “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee," “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" and “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.” Bee’s program, a weekly show, will go audience-free beginning Wednesday; the remaining programs will start the practice next week.

Thanks, OP.
NBA Corona virus drama tonight:
[quote]@royceyoung reports that the Thunder-Jazz game was seconds away from tipping off when the Thunder's head medical staffer sprinted onto the floor to talk to referees in Oklahoma City. At that point, players and staff were sent back to their respective locker rooms.
then
[quote]The Jazz and Thunder players are currently quarantined in the OKC arena, league sources tell ESPN. This is following Rudy Gobert testing positive for the coronavirus.
and now:
[quote]The NBA has suspended the season.

I’m still at 4.
I’ve had flu before. You feel sick, you lie in bed, then you’re better.
The fact that you can (?) get reinfected is troubling, though. That could get old reeeaal faaaast.

How can we repatriate Tom Hanks?

Karma man... wow
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 12, 2020 1:53 AM |
Chris Paul of the OKC Thunders is the president of the NBA Players Union. You can see him in videos talking with refs and coaches and see him basically saying we're done.

R3 - Same! This reminds of a blockbuster movie where everything starts off normal then quickly spirals into chaos (World War Z, War of the Worlds, Walking Dead...).
My company gave us 3 days off from work and said to report back on Monday. It will probably be A LOT worse on Monday!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 12, 2020 1:54 AM |
Dumbass R7 - This is A LOT worse than the fucking FLU!!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 12, 2020 1:56 AM |
I have a sore throat, a the start of a cough. My panic level just ticked up from 5 to 6.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 12, 2020 1:56 AM |
R11 Yeah, this is spiraling FAST.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 12, 2020 1:57 AM |
Panicking is definitely going to make it better.
Look, we’re all going to get it. Most of us will survive. STIFF UPPER LIP.

NBA and Tom Hanks finally makes it real. 10.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 12, 2020 1:58 AM |
There are still moments I can't believe this is real. I know it is. But it is still stunning.
Stay home, stay apart as much as you can. Distance will help.

Can anyone tell me what will become of my jury duty, scheduled in 3 weeks?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 12, 2020 1:58 AM |
It sucks, but this and the stock market crashing are good for the general election.
No one in my city has it and I’m kinda wondering when or if this is actually going to happen. Will it be anticlimactic?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 12, 2020 1:59 AM |
I have to show up for preliminary jury selection on March 31. C.R.A.P. I'm going to call in advance and tell them not feeling well, etc etc. I am NOT subjecting myself to potentially sick people.

by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 12, 2020 2:00 AM |
R7, actually, it's very unlikely that you can get re-infected. People who "got it twice" probably just got better for a while, and then got worse. I work in immunology, and I see nothing about this virus that would make it an exception to people building immunity after getting infected by it.

On TRMS tonight, Ron Klain said we have 65,000 ventilators and 1 million hospital beds in the entire country.
The attending physician of Congress told them he expects 70 to 150 million people will ultimately be infected.
If 20% of those cases are severe—which largely requires hospitalization on a ventilator—that means 14 million to 30 million people will be descending on hospitals, competing for 1 million beds and 65,000 ventilators.

R49, same thought has crossed my mind about my cats. No one would or could come to my apartment to care for them. I have friends and we cat-sit for each other but if I have the virus, who would come into my home?
I have two auto feeders and they hold enough food for about a week. But after that...
My game plan is if I get sick, I'm going to stay home and tough it out so I can at least feed my cats.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 12, 2020 2:24 AM |
R49... stay cool. First, you will probably only get mild symptoms if you get it. Second, start thinking carefully. There will be a solution. Order in extra food, so someone just has to collect the dog and that. Poll your friends and relatives. Talk to your vet, which probably offers boarding. Is your dog a pure-bred? There might be a rescue organization that could cover you if worse comes to worst. Don't panic. Start thinking it through. I have, as a dog owner.

r47 I used a Purell wipe on the handrail for three floors (the upper ones can fend for themselves) this afternoon as the elevator in our building underwent repairs. I need to make a daily visible checklist of things to disinfect and make sure I have ample gloves of cloth and vinyl when I go out.

R49, you'll most likely be shuffled off to a nursing home to recuperate. Most nursing homes are happy to accommodate family pets for visitation. With a little luck, they will be so impressed with you pooch, and hire him as a Canine Therapist, and you can recover together.

My parents refuse to stock essential food. They think everything is hysteria. They're smart liberal types. I can't convince them otherwise. I went to the supermarket and stocked food and essentials. I bought something for them and kept it here with me. My guess is LA will go to chaos by next Wednesday, they live in Santa Monica, not far.

I had one little bottle of Purell on hand thank god, and ordered mini 4 bottles on eBay tonight ($5.00 each which wasn't bad, those mini Bath and Body Works ones) I was not paying $75.00 for full size bottle. Before this blows up, I am stopping at store every few days for food so I would at least be set for 1 month- Have rubber gloves, have a decent face mask I ordered, Lysol, bleach.. Got all of the Theraflu shit, lozenges, Emergen-C Gummies.. Ordered about 5 books from Amazon- I work from home. But every time I go in the store the they are looking more like a war zone- Every time I touch that credit card touchscreen I cringe!
And I hate reading about people here worried about their pets. That makes me so sad...

R56, next time you go to Walgreens or a market (not Walmart) pick up a few bars of Fels Naptha soap bars. They’re in the laundry aisle, not the hand soap aisle.
It’s a laundry soap and does a good job of cleaning clothes if you have to wash them in the sink. If you can’t get that, get a bar or two of Zote (Mexican laundry soap bar). I’ve used both and prefer Fels Naptha, but get which ever one you can get and pick up a couple of bars, it’s cheap and if you end up quarantining in your apartment, you can keep your clothes clean. Fels Naptha is good for keeping underclothes white. It’s not bleach, it’s just effective.
If you don’t want to go to the communal laundry room to do your laundry at all, the prepper hand laundry machine is a five gallon pail, like a Home Depot bucket, and a new plunger. You put the dirty clothes in the bucket, add water and a small amount of Tide or similar laundry soap, and agitate it with the plunger. It gets your clothes clean and doesn’t take up much room. If you get a lid, you can cut a hole in the top and put the plunger handle through the hole, or if you don’t want to do that, just do it in the bathtub or shower. This actually works pretty well and is easy to store in a tight space. You might think about planning for this if you could be quarantined or just want to stay away from other tenants.

I'm stocking up on aspirin.
Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) has been used for more than 115 years in medicine. Research exists to show that aspirin has antiviral effects in vitro, for example, by blocking influenza virus propagation via NF‐κB inhibition when used at high concentrations and short‐term incubation steps. The aim of this study was to confirm the antiviral activity of aspirin against influenza virus and further elucidate the activity of aspirin against other respiratory viruses.

Seriously, all the things posted here that DLers want to buy, they have been missing from store shelves for awhile. I went to Target 3x this week and came away with only a can of Lysol. Was lucky to get it. Target employee was just unboxing it as I walked up and a woman said she wanted every can in the box. Good thing the employee told her there was a max limit of six per shopper. Still that was half the stock for the store. It was a whole box of 12 cans. I'm sure it was gone quickly.

I was at 9 but I've recently downgraded to 5. I even got Chinese takeout on Saturday and am planning to get dim sum this weekend.
Now that more factual information about the virus is coming out, I'm getting a little less scared. Young people are rarely dying without other complications. The incubation period is more commonly between five and nine days. Recovered patients are in fact seroconverted, so, reinfection doesn't appear to be a concern.
I'm a little alarmed about the news that the virus can last in the air for up to three hours, and I'm feeling vindicated about my decision to stop using public transportation. I'm also going to try to stay out of crowded areas. But, since I'm still reasonably young and healthy, at this point, I'm more worried about passing it to my boyfriend since he has hypertension and to my cat who's old and asthmatic.
Now I'm more scared about what this will do to the economy. This could be an enormous blow and not just because the stock market is tanking. Service workers are being laid off or suspended without pay. Large corporations can probably weather this storm, but small businesses might not. There's a good chance that any business or industry that was struggling will not make it through this crisis.

R49, Do you have a neighborhood community message board? We have Nextdoor in my town. I think you'll find some kind-hearted folks who can help you with your dog in that scenario, if you don't have friends or family.
The vast majority of us will get through this, and it's as a community that we will look out for each other, as the WH has shown time and again that the government can't.
In my most optimistic days, I think this virus is what will do the most good to reunite this country. On my pessimistic days, I think it's just another opportunity to blame and point fingers. Maybe we don't let Trump do that this time.

At this point, any efforts to contain or slow the spread are like an umbrella in a hurricane. The epidemiological patterns established for this virus tells us its circulation is already widespread and case numbers will double every few days. Our healthcare system, and then our economy, will collapse. We're entering a dark age. Special thanks to the especially stupid Americans, electing an obvious psychopath to the presidency. The toll will be orders of magnitude worse. It didn't have to be like this.

R195, read the reports coming out of Italy and Iran. People in their 20s, 30s, and 40s are succumbing to pneumonia. We know there are two strains, and one is more virulent than the other. "Most of them will either be asymptomatic or have mild symptoms" is simply v2.0 of "it's just the flu".

The next few days will have some alarming reports, but remember that a lot of the new cases will be known because testing is becoming more available. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were feeling a little icky and were able to get tested. Contrast that to a few weeks ago when the doctors at UC Davis had trouble getting a test for their seriously ill patient. The virus is undoubtedly spreading, but before you crap your pants TOO much, it is not necessarily exploding like crazy.

Q to WHO guy: What were mild, severe and critical? We think of “mild” as like a minor cold.
WHO guy: No. “Mild” was a positive test, fever, cough — maybe even pneumonia, but not needing oxygen. “Severe” was breathing rate up and oxygen saturation down, so needing oxygen or a ventilator. “Critical” was respiratory failure or multi-organ failure.

Hanks touched down in Gold Coast on January 26 for the film, which is still in pre-production meaning cameras have not started rolling yet.
He was rumored to be staying at Peppers Broadbeach, the very same hotel building where a 44-year-old Chinese national, who later became one of Australia's first cases of coronavirus, was staying, according to The Advertiser.

I work in Healthcare and on the front lines(off tonight). We are taking this very very seriously. I myself am over 60 and have Asthma which puts me highly at risk. Read what's going on in Italy and that will be us soon. Suppose a city’s hospitals have a total of 10 ventilators and suppose seven of them are in use, keeping victims of familiar flu and pneumonia alive. The eruption of a new disease that causes a mere four people to need a ventilator poses a crisis for that city. And the crisis becomes unsustainable if similar outbreaks are happening in surrounding cities as well. Covid-19 is different from influenza because it is new. And any new stress on the health-care infrastructure is a potential national emergency. Those of us working in Hospitals have been warned to not post on social media and can be fired(in my area).

Here's another food "secret." If you like caramel, try this jar of Mrs. Richardson's butterscotch caramel sauce. It seems like they now make just plain "caramel" sauce (more expensive). Anyway, I only eat this once every ten years or so, but I love it. Goes with lots of things: ice cream, brownies, etc. Not expensive and, I bet, not sold out at stores.

What we may be in for, from Italy:
Two weeks ago, Italy had 322 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. At that point, doctors in the country’s hospitals could lavish significant attention on each stricken patient.
One week ago, Italy had 2,502 cases of the virus, which causes the disease known as COVID-19. At that point, doctors in the country’s hospitals could still perform the most lifesaving functions by artificially ventilating patients who experienced acute breathing difficulties.
Today, Italy has 10,149 cases of the coronavirus. There are now simply too many patients for each one of them to receive adequate care. Doctors and nurses are unable to tend to everybody. They lack machines to ventilate all those gasping for air.
Now the Italian College of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI) has published guidelines for the criteria that doctors and nurses should follow in these extraordinary circumstances. The document begins by likening the moral choices facing Italian doctors to the forms of wartime triage that are required in the field of “catastrophe medicine.” Instead of providing intensive care to all patients who need it, its authors suggest, it may become necessary to follow “the most widely shared criteria regarding distributive justice and the appropriate allocation of limited health resources.”
The principle they settle upon is utilitarian. “Informed by the principle of maximizing benefits for the largest number,” they suggest that “the allocation criteria need to guarantee that those patients with the highest chance of therapeutic success will retain access to intensive care.”
The authors, who are medical doctors, then deduce a set of concrete recommendations for how to manage these impossible choices, including this: “It may become necessary to establish an age limit for access to intensive care.”

My sister, who lives outside of San Diego, just had a baby, and our 76 year old mother wants to fly in from Chicago to visit. I am advising against it, but this is her first grandbaby (she's been waiting for decades). It's so weird- both my sister and her genetic researcher husband are total germaphobes, but they don't want to deny her the visit. So I told them to have our mother wear a mask and gloves during the flight and when visiting.

In the first months of the outbreak, only those having serious symptoms were tested and identified. The mortality rate looked like something in the 3 to 10 percent range. If we knew the true scope of the infections, the mortality rate would most likely drop to flu-like levels. But, we only know the mortality rate out of the small group who have so far been identified as having it.

Trump bans flights from mainland Europe, but not UK and Ireland. He does know that someone from France, Spain, Belgium etc can travel to London and flight from there right? Or am I missing something? Against my will I've been reasonably impressed with Boris Johnson's approach so far. He's sticking to the science - no petty blame gaming - and preparing for the shut down, which is probably coming in the next week or so. The budget was announced yesterday, and again there were practical measures to prepare people for what's coming - money for the NHS, help for employers to cover sick pay and a reduction in business rates for small businesses. It goes against the grain for me to give Tories any credit at all, but they are trying to step up a bit.

r241, I was in a grocery store tonight in LA. Not only was it super crowded, there was a tension so thick it was scary. It was as if we were all being excessively polite to each other, just waiting for something to happen...one person to make a run for the door or scream or whatever. I felt like it would have very easily turned into a stampede.
Also, lots of people in the canned food aisle. Pasta too. I stocked up on a few things I normally wouldn't buy...canned soups, rice, peanut butter.

My panic is 7. Not enough to get off my ass to do most prepper stuff, but high enough that Internet news and theories have me actually worried about the prospect of many millions dying (whether from inevitably weak immunity, overburdened healthcare, or secondary results).
But until I see more impact, I'll presume its just a rough year (far from 'millions dying').
COVID-19 isn't the most directly infectious thing out there, but it seems its power is in the infected not being symptomatic for so damn long. Real risk of it sneaking up behind us and slamming down hard - suddenly there's thousands of cases in your area, hospitals are overwhelmed, and have to make Italy style decisions to move care to younger patients with higher chance to survive. Yes, most infected will definitely survive, yes 4/5 will have no more than something like a super bad flu and cough, but that's what lets our guard down and spread it to all the people who are much more likely to suffer hard and potentially die.
Cases don't need to explode, to still catch regions unawares. Its actually the creep-up that then take opportunity to later explode into more exponential growth.

I stocked up on canned goods a month and a half ago, so I should be okay there.
I have a "cold and flu" kit from the last time I got sick but I tried to add some cold and flu medicine to it and Amazon SAYS it's in stock, but then shipping times are suddenly much greater than what they should be (1-2 weeks out vs. 1-2 days). I ordered it anyway (the Amazon "Basic Care" brand).
I had an outstanding Amazon pantry order that was supposed to be delivered today. It never showed up and isn't even showing as "shipped". I cancelled the order. It had some rice and canned fruit in it. I'm guessing it was the rice that caused it to be postponed. All items showed as in stock when I ordered and should have been here a week ago.
I'm also in the process of moving - next weekend I am supposed to have three movers here packing my stuff and moving it down the road to a new house. I'm concerned that isn't going to happen because of the coronavirus - we had several cases in my city and there are probably a lot more hiding because you couldn't get tested at all until this week.
I wish I could move my move date up.

I heard something in the news about food distribution after the arrival of the national guard in New Rochelle. Had not realized they were planning food distribution. The containment area around the temple is fairly affluent, with mostly single family homes. But heat happens if this extends to areas where people don’t routinely (even without hoarding) have enough calories on hand for a week or two)? And what about people who work off the books and don’t have income for food without work. What are they going to do after a week of two of quarantine?

My Dominos Pizza experience:
I once ordered a pizza from Dominos and went to pick it up. When I got there, the woman behind the counter told me that it would be done in a few minutes. I waited and in a few minutes, she brought it from the oven, placing it in the box for cutting. As she grabbed the cutting tool, however, the phone rang so she abandoned to task of cutting my pizza to answer the phone and take an order. Meanwhile, as the woman walked to the phone, the delivery driver just happened to walk through the employee entrance at the side. I watched him lay his insulated pizza sleeve and his money bag on the counter next to my uncut pizza, grab the tool, and cut my pizza. He came directly from a delivery, did not wash his hands, and did not put on gloves before cutting my pizza. When I protested, all they said was "I(he) never touched the pizza itself!" I left with no pizza, and I was really hungry, too!

“It is, Savannah,” Pence responded. When Guthrie asked Pence how many Americans are expected to be infected, the vice president said, “We know there will be thousands of more cases of coronavirus.”
“Thousands or millions?” the “Today” host pressed. “I’ll leave to the experts to make the estimates of how many people will be infected,” Pence said.

About the masks. I found this article from back in the H1N1 days. OSHA says you can potentially reuse N95 masks if you wear a normal surgical mask OVER the N95. Or maybe a bandana or such if you don't have any surgical masks. Which will be my plan as things worsen. Partner found a small stash of N95s in our basement leftover from some house repair work. Ordinarily I'd bitch at him for being such a hoarder, but not today!
[quote] ""Employers must address in their respiratory protection program the circumstances under which a disposable respirator will be considered to be contaminated and not available for extended use or reuse," the directive reads. Outpatient facilities and doctor's offices may have particular trouble receiving N95 shipments, so reuse of N95s may be a priority. Educate employees to wear a surgical mask over the N95, wash their hands when donning and doffing the respirator without touching the inside, and store it in a breathable bag, McFarlane says.

Bloomberg News: Patients with the new coronavirus keep the pathogen in their respiratory tract for as long as 37 days, a new study found, suggesting they could remain infectious for many weeks.
In yet another sign of how difficult the pandemic may be to contain, doctors in China detected the virus’s RNA in respiratory samples from survivors for a median of 20 days after they became infected, they wrote in an article published in the Lancet medical journal.
Currently, the recommended isolation period after exposure is 14 days to avoid spreading the virus. But if people remain contagious long after their symptoms have vanished, they may unwittingly propagate the pathogen after they return from quarantine.
By comparison, only a third of patients with SARS still harbored the virus in their respiratory tract after as long as four weeks, the Chinese scientists said.

I have cut and pasted excerpt from Washington Post on subject of "layoffs." Frightening. Link below. Note: I was able to access the article using Incognito feature on Google. The link I pasted is behind a paywall, unfortunately.
[bold]“The layoffs are already happening,” she said. “Most of these are last-hired, first-fired situations, but I’m really seeing it pick up this week in big cities: Atlanta, New York, Chicago.”
The travel industry layoffs reached Alex Brown, who was shocked at how quickly it all happened. Brown made $12 an hour overseeing marketing for a boutique travel agency in Atlanta. She learned on Monday she was being laid off because of nosediving sales and a falling stock market. Her boss told her he would get in touch “when this all blows over.”
“Even with that, I really wasn’t expecting to get laid off so soon,” she said.
Brown, 22, is not sure where to find new work. She emailed her former manager at an upscale restaurant and plans to talk to her boss at a gelato shop, where she works one shift a week, to see whether she can get more hours. She is afraid those places will be struggling soon, too.
“I don’t even know where I should be looking,” Brown said. “Which businesses are actually going to be hiring long-term for this strange year ahead of us? Everyone is cutting back.”

Study suggests number of cases could have been cut by 66% if China had acted a week earlier.
Sophisticated modelling of the outbreak suggests that China had 114,325 cases by the end of February 2020, a figure that would have been 67 times higher without interventions such as early detection, isolation of the infected, and travel restrictions.
But if the interventions could have been brought in a week earlier, 66% fewer people would have been infected, the analysis found. The same measures brought in three weeks earlier could have reduced cases by 95%.

JetBlue plane flew from New York to Florida with passenger who tested positive for COVID-19 (!!!this cunt should be jailed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
By: WPTV Staff A witness says it seems the passenger knew he had coronavirus, but still boarded the plane anyway. JetBlue plane flew from New York to Florida with passenger who tested positive for COVID-19
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A passenger aboard a JetBlue flight arrived at Palm Beach International Airport (PBIA) as a positive coronavirus case, Palm Beach Fire Rescue (PBFR) said early Thursday morning.
Flight 253 from New York JFK landed in Palm Beach at 8:53 p.m. local time, but the plane remained on the tarmac instead of proceeding to gate C12. Passengers departed the aircraft around 10:45 p.m.
"The person across the way from me was taken to the back of the plane. He was wearing masks and gloves. His wife was sitting in the same row as me and mentioned to others that he wasn't feeling well. She said he had gotten a phone call with his test results right before we had taken off, implying that he had a positive test but not actually saying it," said passenger Scott Rodman.
PBFR said the State Health Department in Palm Beach County completed its assessment of the situation and spoken with all passengers aboard the flight.
In addition, passengers in the vicinity of the unidentified COVID-19 positive patient were advised of monitoring procedures.
Remaining passengers were released and given directions by Dr. Alina Alonso, the health director in Palm Beach County, to call the health department with any concerns.
PBIA is sterilizing the limited-containment area where the passengers deplaned, which was a separate location from the main terminals of the airport.
PBFR said crews first responded to a medical incident aboard the plane at 8:40 p.m.
In addition, passengers in the vicinity of the unidentified COVID-19 positive patient were advised of monitoring procedures.
Remaining passengers were released and given directions by Dr. Alina Alonso, the health director in Palm Beach County, to call the health department with any concerns.

WaPo: Iran's coronavirus burial pits are so vast they're visible from space.
Two days after Iran declared its first cases of the novel coronavirus — in what would become one of the largest outbreaks of the illness outside of China — evidence of unusual activity appeared at a cemetery near where the infections emerged.
At the Behesht-e Masoumeh complex in Qom, about 80 miles south of Tehran, the excavation of a new section of the graveyard began as early as Feb. 21, satellite images show, and then rapidly expanded as the virus spread. By the end of the month, two large trenches — their lengths totaling 100 yards — were visible at the site from space.
According to expert analysis, video testimony and official statements, the graves were dug to accommodate the rising number of virus victims in Qom.

There's no reason why they can't stay aboard the ships. A lot of Carnival's fleet was used as emergency FEMA housing after Katrina, and going back as far as Hurricane Andrew, one of their ships was even used as housing for corporate office workers who were displaced.

Reuters: China, where the disease originated, said its epidemic had peaked and the global spread could be over by June if other nations applied similarly aggressive containment measures as Beijing’s communist government.
The Chinese government’s senior medical adviser, Zhong Nanshan, an 83-year-old epidemiologist renowned for helping combat the SARS outbreak in 2003, said the crisis could be over by mid-year.
“If all countries could get mobilized, it could be over by June,” he said. “But if some countries do not treat the infectiousness and harmfulness seriously, and intervene strongly, it would last longer.”
(So I guess America is screwed.)

[QUOTE] There's no reason why they can't stay aboard the ships.
We don't really know that. Katrina did not involve viral contagion. And FEMA undoubtedly paid a lot of money for that lodging. Here, the ships are being taken of service because there is a problem with paying customers.
A cruise ship that is losing money is not a good candidate to be up and running. While a certain amount of staff will be needed to maintain the ship during a furlough, there is no way a cruise line is going to pay to house actors and musicians and waiters and chambermaids and on and on and on.

So when I saw they "got the virus in Australia" I immediately remembered the photo of the two of them strolling on a boardwalk. Likely, they got it in Europe I am guessing, and not Australia. CNN-This is why Germany can't impose nationwide bans like other European countries
While Italy imposes a nationwide lockdown, and Ireland announces school suspensions, blanket bans aren't quite so simple in fellow European country Germany.
Essentially, German chancellor Angela Merkel does not have the sweeping power to close down large parts of public life across the entire country.
Germany is a federal state. So when it comes to political decisions like canceling public events, closing down schools or implement new health regulations, those are taken at state level.
Merkel and her national ministers can only make recommendations. Over the last few days, Germany’s Health Minister, Jens Spahn, has repeatedly recommended canceling mass public gatherings with over 1,000 people.
Some of Germany’s hardest-hit regions have implemented this ban already — but not all of them have. The same goes for the closure of schools and universities. Some have been shut, while others continue to operate.

R295/FortWorthGay,
Avoid this area, including Plano. I'm guessing Collin county & Denton county are about to become a big red zone in the coming week, with all these grade-schoolers having gone to camp, the Y, QuikTrip, etc. before the email from the school district was sent out saying there was a family with a member who tested positive.
Sit tight in Ft. Worth for a few days, by this time next week your colleagues probably won't bother asking you to meet up here.
The grade-schooler child of the guy who tested positive-- that kid's test came back "inconclusive" a couple days ago, and they retested. We have not heard anything from the city or school district about the retest results, but surely they'd have them by now. I suspect the test came back positive and they're trying to figure out how to spin it as they wait for the kid's contacts to be tested. There are 63,000 kids in the Frisco school system alone, and they go all over Texas and beyond when there's a break.
Also, whomever the city official was who released the statement about the family-in-question sounded like a deplorable straight from Nextdoor, saying the guy wasn't contagious when he was cavorting about, and the potentially-positive kids never posed a risk to the school, etc. So the ignorance of our officials and the continuing willful ignorance of this whole goddamned town, in an attempt to save face and look "tough" is only going to compound the disaster, much as it is unfolding on a national scale.

CNN-Italian cardiologist says surgical department has been shut down to make room for coronavirus patients
The head of an Italian cardiac surgery department said the coronavirus outbreak has forced his department to suspend operations to make room for coronavirus patients.
Dr. Lorenzo A. Menicanti, the head of cardiac surgery department at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato in Milan, told CNN's Becky Anderson cardiac surgery has been "completely shut down" — except for pediatric cases.
"The big, big issue is the cardiac surgery for adults. It is completely shut down," he said.
"So it's really an uneasy situation for us, for the patient, for the hospital, because to stop so large a program of cardiac surgery is really difficult because we have to think that after that we have to reopen all things and sometimes not so evident."

‘If I’m Going to Get Sick and Die, I Might as Well Do It at Disney World’
Even as demand for flights and cruises has fallen, travel agents who plan trips to Disney parks report that business is as high as usual, if not higher. Visitors to Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando last week said that they felt safe at the parks and weren’t going to allow fear to force them to cancel their vacations.
At Disney World on Friday, thousands of people filed into the Magic Kingdom, the most visited park there, as usual. Although guests had to press a touch-screen scanner for their fingerprint to enter the park, and put their bags into bins for a security guard to look through, hand sanitizer dispensers at the entrance were not within an arm’s reach, but a few feet away. Few guests had masks on.
“Me and my husband have been monitoring things, but didn’t feel like we needed to cancel our plans,” she said. “We have wipes, we have hand sanitizer, we aren’t elderly and honestly, if you’re going to get it, you’re going to get it. If I’m going to get sick and die, I might as well do it at Disney World.”

CNN-Oregon governor orders all events of more than 250 people canceled statewide
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced at a news conference Thursday that all large gatherings of more than 250 people will be canceled statewide effective immediately for four weeks in an attempt to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Oregon health officials have previously recommend keeping schools open to support students’ well-being and access to health care and food, but Brown announced Thursday that all non-essential school-associated gatherings and group activities should be canceled — such as group parent meetings, field trips, and competitions.

CNN-CDC says cost of coronavirus treatment will be covered
Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the cost of testing and treatment will be covered.
During Thursday’s House Oversight committee hearing on novel coronavirus, Rep. Ayanna Pressley asked Redfield, "will the cost of testing be covered,” Redfield responded, "the cost of testing will be covered.”
Following up, Pressley asked, "and what about treatment?" Redfield said, "cost of treatment will be covered."
Redfield said the White House Coronavirus Task Force is working hard to make sure everyone is financially able to stay home if necessary during the coronavirus outbreak.
He said the task force has "addressed this as a critical public health component,” adding the United States needs to ensure those under a 14-day quarantine “not have to sneak out for an hourly job so they have to pay for their cost of living."

According to Reuters:
The death toll from an outbreak of coronavirus in Italy has jumped in the last 24 hours by 189 to 1,016, a rise of 23%, the Civil Protection Agency said on Thursday.
The total number of cases in Italy, the European country hardest hit by the virus, rose to 15,113 from a previous 12,462, an increase of 21.7%. That marked the biggest daily rise in absolute terms since the contagion first came to light on Feb. 21.
The agency said that, of those originally infected, 1,258 had fully recovered compared to 1,045 the day before. Some 1,153 people were in intensive care against a previous 1,028.

Nation's Nerds Wake Up In Utopia Where Everyone Stays Inside, Sports Are Canceled, Social Interaction Forbidden
U.S.—The nation's nerds woke up in a utopia this morning, one where everyone stays inside, sporting events are being canceled, and all social interaction is forbidden.
All types of nerds, from social introverts to hardcore PC gamers, welcomed the dawn of this new era, privately from their own homes.
"I have been waiting my whole life for this moment," said Ned Pendleton, 32 -- via text message, of course -- as he fired up League of Legends on his beefy gaming PC. "They told me to take up a sport and that the kids playing basketball and stuff were gonna be way more successful than us nerds who played Counter-Strike at LAN parties every weekend."
"They all laughed at me. Well, who's laughing now?"
To prepare for the onslaught of the deadly disease, nerds are changing absolutely nothing and are expected to rise up to rule the post-Coronavirus society, as they are the ones best adjusted to being sheltered in a basement, garage, or room for many days at a time marathoning Halo, Half-Life, The Legend of Zelda, Red Dead Redemption, or Horizon Zero Dawn. They're also ready for any post-apocalyptic wasteland, as they've played many, many hours of Fallout and are adept at killing bloatflies and collecting bottlecaps.
Of course, many nerds are running out of hygienic products, but they say that's "not an issue."

NCAA cancels March Madness The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has announced that the annual Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments have been canceled due to coronavirus concerns.
Here's what the NCAA said in a statement:
"Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."

A friend on fb sent this to me, I do not know how true it is but I figured it doesn't hurt to try:
Important PLEASE READ!!!This info is from my friend that works for CDC that passed this along to his family and friends. I'm passing it along as well.. The new NCP coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days, how can one know if he/she is infected. By the time they have fever and/or cough and goes to the hospital, the lungs is usually 50 % Fibrosis and it's too late! Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning: Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stuffiness or tightness, etc.,it proves there is no fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicating no infection. In critical times, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air.
SERIOUS EXCELLENT ADVICE by Japanese Doctors treating COVID-19 cases: Everyone should ensure your mouth & throatis moist, never DRY.
Take a few sips of water every 15 mins at least. WHY? Even if the virus gets into your mouth...drinking water or other liquids will WASH them down through your esophagus into the stomach. Stocks plummet as Wall Street's 11-year bull market comes to a screeching halt From CNN's Anneken Tappe
US stocks recorded their worst day since the 1987 crash Thursday, on rising fears about the coronavirus pandemic.
Wall Street officially fell into a bear market with the S&P 500 dropping more than 20% from its February 19 peak. The Dow, a smaller index than the S&P, fell into a bear market Wednesday.
The S&P 500 closed down 9.5%. It was its worst day since October 19, 1987, known as “Black Monday.”
The index dropped 7% in the first minutes of trading, which triggered a circuit breaker and led the New York Stocks Exchange to suspend trading for 15 minutes.
The Dow finished 2,352 points, or nearly 10%, lower in its biggest one-day percentage drop since “Black Monday.” The index is now at a level not seen since summer 2017.
The Nasdaq Composite closed down 9.4%. It is now also in a bear market.

Chinese official blames coronavirus outbreak on US military
A Chinese government spokesman has tried to blame the US army for the deadly coronavirus outbreak, which was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization this week.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian claimed Thursday that the US military might have brought the COVID-19 virus to the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the outbreak emerged in December.
“When did patient zero begin in US? How many people are infected? What are the names of the hospitals? It might be US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! US owe us an explanation!” Zhao tweeted in English in one of a series of tweets critical of the US.
The comments appear to be retaliation in a war of words with Washington. Chinese government officials bristled when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo referred to the coronavirus as the “Wuhan virus,” and decried when President Trump called it a “foreign virus” that started “in China.”
The contagious illness has now infected more than 125,000 people in at least 118 countries and territories, according to figures from the WHO Thursday afternoon.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

At Wednesday night’s opening party for the Brooklyn Museum’s “Studio 54: Night Magic” exhibit, a number of partygoers sported flashy COVID-19-themed face coverings. Attendees Allison Eden and Gary Goldenstein, who wore matching disco-ball masks to the gala, told paparazzi their coordinated glitterati garb was inspired by the potentially deadly virus.
“It took me a day and a half to make each one,” Eden, 50, tells The Post of her and her husband’s masks. “I feel if you have to wear a face mask now, why not make it fabulous? Why not make disco balls?”
Eden, who runs a Bushwick-based handcrafted glass mosaic business, is among the growing ranks of pizzazz-minded health warriors making and sporting bedazzled face coverings: Celebrities from Billie Eilish, 18, to Steve Harvey, 63, have donned tricked-out face masks as the trend spreads from the streets of New York to partiers, influencers and models on runways around the world.

Coronavirus can survive 5 weeks in body after infection: study
The findings, published in the Lancet this week, indicate that the current recommendation for isolation — two weeks — may not go far enough to prevent transmission of the virus.
Chinese researchers pulled medical records and lab data to track COVID-19’s presence in 191 patients treated at Jinyintan Hospital and Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital. Of the patients, 54 had died from the infection, which remained in their systems until death.
The results of the research have “important implications for both patient-isolation decision-making and guidance around the length of antiviral treatment,” Dr. Fei Zhou, of the Peking Union Medical College, writes in the report.
The study also notes that 48% of coronavirus patients had a comorbidity, such as hypertension, diabetes and coronary heart disease, which decreased their odds of kicking the virus, along with old age.
Scientists also note that during the 2003 outbreak of SARS, which is another form of coronavirus, only a third of patients still carried the virus after four weeks.
For influenza patients, viral shedding typically persists five to 10 days, beginning within 24 hours before or after the onset of symptoms. Children and immunocompromised individuals, however, may shed longer, for weeks or months, according to the World Health Organization.

It's a slippery slope and I fear people will accept this new normal and it's going to be exploited by governments.

update on the Costco in Brooklyn. There were so many people there yesterday that they were backed up on the expressway waiting to get in. The police had to come to direct traffic. A Jewish woman wanted to know where the wipes were because after the holiday they had she needed to clean her house. She was told they were out and didn't she know what was going on. Obviously none of the Brooklyn Jews knew because today the store was so packed they had to close the doors as it was filled to capacity. They were fighting over the products. There were 11 tractor trailer deliveries last night and it still didn't fill the shelves for today.

‘Super spreaders’ could turn gyms into coronavirus hotbeds, doctor warns
Coronavirus-infected fitness enthusiasts could turn gyms into hotbeds for the disease, a doctor says.
Dr. Norman Swan told Australian outlet ABC that the sweat of people with the virus could easily spread the bug to others at workout hubs.
“Dampness is a bad thing for spreading germs,” Swan told the outlet. “You’ve got these big blokes pumping away and you never know, one of them might be a super spreader.”
Super spreaders” are coronavirus carriers who spread the illness to a disproportionately high number of people, the Telegraph reported. While some individuals might infect one or two people, a “super spreader” may pass the illness to dozens.
But while Swan suggested that people should steer clear of the gym altogether, he said contagion could still be avoided if they take precautions.
“It doesn’t mean you stop going to the gym, you’ve got to be super careful at the gym,” Swan said. “You’ve got to make sure you wipe down before and after use.”
Health officials have cautioned against close physical contact, such as shaking hands, and suggested that anyone who experiences flu-like symptoms stay home.
Across the world, the virus has spread to more than 118,000 people, causing at least 4,291 deaths.

Passenger licks fingers, rubs them on train pole amid coronavirus panic
A drunken straphanger went off the rails on a Belgian subway train amid the coronavirus crisis — licking his fingers and wiping them on a pole, according to a report.
The passenger was captured on video lowering his face mask and sticking two fingers in his mouth before rubbing his hand up and down the pole, according to the UK’s Metro.
Twitter user @SoufOff posted the footage Monday, writing in French: “Stop touching the bars.”
The sicko “was arrested by the police and our security service. The subway train has been removed from service for cleaning,” the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Co. said in a statement.
There have been 314 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and one death in Belgium, the news site reported.
More than 115,000 have been infected by the bug globally and about 4,300 have died.

R570, Arsenal just announced their head coach tested positive. Their entire first team will self-quarantine for 14 days. I don't see how the PL doesn't suspend the season? Are they going to continue with only 19 teams?

Ugh. My mom (who is 78) told me that she took my uncle to a doctor appointment on Monday and some woman in the waiting room was coughing incessantly. This is in super-flyover Western PA, but still I am freaking the fuck out.

Does Iran have a very large elderly population?
by Anonymous | reply 586 | March 12, 2020 11:17 PM |
R586 I'm not sure what their exact demographic numbers are, but all Muslim-majority countries have much smaller older populations than the Western world just due to how many more children they have per family.

[quote] I heard thru the grapevine that they are planning on shutting the subways down
New Yorkers are receiving text messages falsely claiming that New York City will be shut down this weekend because of the coronavirus. The mayor's office and NYPD have confirmed this is not true.

R589 So many crazy rumors and scams running rampant these days. And gullible people falling for them.
by Anonymous | reply 590 | March 12, 2020 11:53 PM |
It's very hard even for well connected and well informed individuals to stay on top of the current news. Very sad that the most susceptible to the disease - the elderly - are also the ones who have more limited and less reliable sources of information.
by Anonymous | reply 591 | March 13, 2020 12:09 AM |
Italy is doing the unthinkable, they are justifying letting the elderly go without treatment and dying.
by Anonymous | reply 592 | March 13, 2020 12:47 AM |
Source please R592, and I won't hold my breath.
by Anonymous | reply 593 | March 13, 2020 12:54 AM |
R592 It's mostly due to the shortage of respirators for critical patients. They have to choose which patient has a better chance to recover.
by Anonymous | reply 594 | March 13, 2020 12:58 AM |
The number one task should be getting respirators made, distributed and staffed. Like WW2.

77 of their 99 cases are from that Biogen conference on Feb. 24-27. Which is why so many mass gatherings are being cancelled now.
