Coronavirus Freakout 14: Quarantine of Solace

"I say...when into the notable city of Florence, fair over every other of Italy, there came the death-dealing pestilence, which, through the operation of the heavenly bodies or of our own iniquitous dealings, being sent down upon mankind for our correction by the just wrath of God, had some years before appeared in the parts of the East ..." -- Giovanni Boccaccio

A TOP British surgeon who has tested positive for coronavirus may have infected hundreds of vulnerable patients as he failed to self-isolate after contracting the killer bug on holiday in Italy.

The senior surgeon at Liverpool’s Aintree University Hospital returned from a family skiing trip in northern Italy last week.

Other members of staff are now showing symptoms and being tested for the bug too - with at least two already in self-quarantine.

There are fears he could have infected hundreds as he usually treats up to 400 patients a week.

His wife, who was also believed to have been on the trip, works at the hospital as well.

Managed to get to the supermarket last night - no loo paper left, very little dried spaghetti and no Paracetamol.

Went to another supermarket and pharmacy this morning and was able to get all that. There was a guy trying to restock the spaghetti section in the supermarket. I'm glad I have a bidet quite frankly.

Any news from Norway?

by Anonymousreply 11March 10, 2020 6:36 PM

What we're seeing was predicted months ago by epidemiologists and anyone with a grade-eight understanding of infectious disease and exponents. Intelligent people, including many of us on DL, were rightfully concerned. Many regions of the world (and the US, once an adequate number of tests are deployed) are entering the "explosion" phase of the "case, case, case... cluster, cluster... BOOM" pattern that can be expected with exponential spread of highly contagious pathogens.

Does the "Nothingburger" guy from the Coronavirus Freakout Part 6 thread want to return and impart any more wisdom? Perhaps address us as "folks" again, while exposing himself as an ignorant know-it-all? Such people facilitate catastrophes like the one that is currently unfolding. Here's a special FUCK YOU to all of you idiots out there.

by Anonymousreply 12March 10, 2020 6:58 PM

I agree R12. All the people STILL saying it's no worse than the flu and everyone needs to calm down need to shut the fuck up before their shitty false sense of security literally kills people. I've told my elderly parents to not leave the house unless it's an emergency until at least April.

Frisco frau here, 'weighing in', two more people here have tested positive-- the two family members of the guy who tested positive yesterday (north Texas' first positive test).

This town is crawling with school-age kids, and right now they're either in day camp for spring break (at the Y, rec centers, etc.) or they're out and about traveling. The parent was of an elementary-schooler, so if that kid has it then its classmates have it, and if they have it, they're mixing with kids of other schools right now who are going to spread it all over.

I wonder

by Anonymousreply 19March 10, 2020 7:51 PM

Scratch the 'I wonder', I didn't look before I posted.

There are 185k people in Frisco and of those something like 55k are school-age kids. So look out.

by Anonymousreply 23March 10, 2020 8:29 PM

An ominous comment from the Daily Mail. In the meantime, most people outside of China, Italy and Iran are going about life as usual. Here, whee I live, people are still attending soccer matches and church services and shaking hands and kissing as normal. In NYC, they are discounting theatre tickets to drum up business and to bring people together in confined spaces as the virus spreads. When the shit really hits the fan, we will only have only ourselves to blame for our own stupidity. We were warned months ago with the outbreak in China. Yet, we continued to do what we do in our bubbles and to dismiss this as an Asian flu . On Facebook, most of my friends and family have barely mentioned the crisis. They continue to post innocuous stories and pictures as the days go by and the fire continues to burn. Few are worried about the deaths, or the lack of testing or the threat to their way of life. If they do not acknowledge the threat it doesn't exist. Ditto for many posters on DL. No matter what happens now, things will be different. One way another we will ALL be affected.. Maybe due to the loss of a loved one or someone we know, a disrupted vacation, or work reduction or layoff. A hit to our savings plan or even our own illness or death. Yes, IT is coming. Are you ready?

European in China here. Europe has ignored the early warnings and is now paying the price. This well be down voted to heII probably, but it's Europe's 'freedom of movement' and governments without the ability to make tough decisions that will necessarily result in MILLIONS more sick and TENS OF THOUSANDS more who will die. International air travel to/from seriously infected European countries should have been suspended, much as was done with China in the early stages. Suspected cases should have been placed under enforced quarantine/isolation - you have the power in the Public Health Act 1984. Once 'community transmission' started - it has been going on for a week already - then the army and volunteers should be enforcing a "no travel" isolation of affected towns/cities with people required to stay home unless going out for supplies. Oh, and mandatory wearing of masks - the purchase price of which can be claimed back from income tax in order to encourage use.

I've been wondering what my neighbor, and then my partner and finally I caught these past couple weeks.

My partner got an upper respiratory infection nearly 3 weeks ago, he assumes from our neighbor he plays cards with. It started with a brief postnasal drip for a day or so, then he got a bad unproductive cough, and a mild fever, he said about 99.8 for a day. He still has a dry cough, and feels weak.

Then over the weekend, I caught this thing. I'm tired, and have a minimally productive cough. I felt achy until yesterday. I also have a headache. The cough comes and goes, and I have a headache today. I'll be fine for several hours and think I'm on the mend, and then it starts again. And I'm still more tired than usual. I had mild night sweats Sat & Sun but nothing last night. No fever when I checked.

We were at Target last night. The cold air in the frozen food section made me start coughing. And then my partner began coughing, probably monkey-see-monkey-do. And there was this chick down the aisle from us, who gave us a glare and left immediately. We laughed and hoped we wouldn't get kicked out.

by Anonymousreply 25March 10, 2020 8:32 PM

Is it true that this thing has maybe been around all winter long but was misdiagnosed as regular flu? I got a flu shot back in October or so but got sick anyway in January for several days with all of the symptoms, it was pretty nasty for a bit.

by Anonymousreply 28March 10, 2020 8:51 PM

R19 Dear Frisco Frau from the middle of Texas, did you already mention about the husband & wife with a 3-year-old who are all CV positive? Those kids with their vacation are probably going to spread the virus to all parts of the state. The Houston/Fort Bend area group is getting larger, with two more today. And here in Beaumont we had a couple return from Thailand who were healthy a few days ago when first reported, and self-quarantined. I wish the local news would update on them. I saw a new red dot on the John Hopkins map this morning, right where I live, and they live.

by Anonymousreply 29March 10, 2020 8:54 PM

In China, if you are allowed to go out in public at all, masks are mandatory. It’s hard not to see the campaign of misinformation in the US as intentional.

I got it from my 89-year-old mom, who had similar symptoms. She seemed to have recovered but then got sick again (I hear the virus comes back sometimes). She’s now recovered again (she’s in excellent health for her age). After reading the symptoms, well... maybe.

by Anonymousreply 38March 10, 2020 9:40 PM

I'm in Westchester County, where the largest cluster of cases in the US is located. Although not in the "containment zone" of the New Rochelle area, we're a few miles away, and people are just going about their lives as if nothing is wrong. I watched at the supermarket people coughing without covering their mouths, and sneezing into their hands, wiping hands on pants, then putting hands back on shopping cart. I was horrified.

And in late April I'm supposed to attend the largest furniture market in the US, where thousands of people from all over the world converge for five days in a small town in North Carolina (High Point). It should be pre-emptively canceled, but it's so important to the economy there, it won't. I really don't want to go, but if it's not canceled I'll have no choice.

by Anonymousreply 39March 10, 2020 9:43 PM

r26 here -- this was a genuine question. I've been reading everything, lots of articles are saying this thing's been around for longer than we've thought it to be; they think that one guy got on the cruise ship already having it, for example. Lots of people are saying it's possible it's been spreading since January. I know it's worse for some people than the flu, but not everyone, not on a person to person basis. That is to say its transmission rate and fatality rate are worse but it's possible that plenty of people have gotten it and just thought it was a bad cold or a bad case of the normal flu. Isn't it like 60% of people that get it just experience that?

by Anonymousreply 40March 10, 2020 9:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 49March 10, 2020 9:54 PM

Not only that R48, but it really is just deferred. People will have to pay the tax next year when they file.

by Anonymousreply 50March 10, 2020 9:55 PM

Trump is trying to reduce panic. To help the stock market for selfish purposes. I honestly don’t think he has any empathy, so I can’t say that concern for public health matters to him. His means of trying to reduce panic, is to lie about the spread of the virus, it’s potential, and so forth. That’s what he knows how to do, lie. That actually increases panic, because people clearly see, or will soon see, it’s more serious than he’s been saying.

I turn 60 this year. The odd thing is, for you youngsters who aren’t there yet, is I actually “feel” quite young. It is true that I don’t have the strength that I used to, but I do feel like I might be in my late 30s. Except when I look in the mirror, haha. So, it’s odd to me that my immune system is deteriorating, though I accept that. I do get yearly physicals, so my hypothyroidism and high cholesterol, my only heath problems, are managed.

As for the immune system of older people, I don’t think your immune system correlates with your overall exterior health. By that I mean, you might go to the gym and be quit fit in that sense. Except if you do cardio so that your heart and lungs are healthy, that probably helps. But if you do strength-lifting, I don’t think that helps.

I really wish I could get the test. If I turned positive, I could at least stop bothering with sanitizing my home and worrying about groceries. I don’t get visitors frequently, so I could isolate and not worry so much about infecting other people. I could have the grocery delivery left outside the front door. Assuming there is grocery delivery a month from now.

He will fire and replace staff to pin the blame on everyone but himself. Sadly, many people will fall for that shit. I was talking to my mom (a non Trump supporter BTW) the other day, and she said "well the President said that..." as IF he had any credibility regarding anything, especially concerning this crisis. Unfortunately, many Americans have been raised to blindly trust and follow their leaders no matter what complete bullshit comes out of their mouths especially during a crisis. R29, yes, this started yesterday. An email came in the afternoon from the school district saying that the parent of a grade-schooler had tested positive for Coronavirus. I immediately tried to post from my phone but the thread kept crashing so I waddled straight over to my laptop and plopped down and posted my intel to Datalounge right away.

Yesterday night there were people in Hazmat suits cleaning the elementary school attended by the guy's kid.

Today it was reported that the guy's wife and toddler tested positive, and the elementary schooler's test result is 'inconclusive.' The guy & his wife have FOUR kids-- one tested positive, one tested inconclusive, and two have tested negative so far.

They said he had contact with about 20 people, mostly coworkers and family, and those people have been notified and are supposed to be self-monitoring.

They think he picked it up in CA, as he fell ill after returning from silicon valley.

Just got this email from Target.

A Note to Our Guests About the Coronavirus from CEO Brian Cornell Over the past few days, so many of you have been in our stores and on our website stocking up on all the essential things you need to keep your families healthy and safe.

I want you to know that your health and safety is our first priority, too.

We’ve always taken great pride in our clean and well-run stores, and we know this is more important than ever right now. On top of our daily cleaning procedures, we’re adding hours to each store’s payroll to make our routines even more rigorous. This means more time will be spent cleaning our stores, including cleaning surfaces like checklanes and touchscreens at least every 30 minutes. Like many others, we’re taking guidance from the CDC, which recommends regular cleaning as one of the most important preventive measures we can take. And, out of an abundance of caution, we’ve temporarily stopped food sampling in our stores.

We’re also staffing up our teams to support in-demand services like Order Pickup and Drive Up.

And of course, we’re committed to taking care of our team. For weeks, we’ve provided them with up-to-the-moment guidance and information so they can keep themselves and their families safe. We’re encouraging sick team members to stay home and asking our teams to travel only if it’s business critical. And, to help support our team in real-time, we’ve set up a forum where we’re sharing information and taking questions 24/7.

Speaking of our team, they are working around the clock to make sure that the products you want are available when you need them. As demand for cleaning products, medicine, pantry stock-up items and more remains high, we’re sending more products to our stores as quickly as possible. And this weekend, we started to limit the number of key items per purchase, which will allow more guests to get what they need.

At the center of our company’s purpose is a commitment to help all families, and it’s something we take to heart in good times and bad. This is why we’ll be working hard to keep our stores open so we can be there to support you and your families. R26 / R40

Both genomic epidemiology and proof of community spread tells us it has indeed been circulating in some communities in the US since January. Kirkland (suburb of Seattle) was the first example of community transmission. Because of asymptomatic spreading and high level of contagion, we know that once clusters and deaths appear, the virus has been circulating and has already infected many more—by orders of magnitude, some experts believe—than the given numbers. Also consider that the us has done an abysmal job of deploying test kits. As more are tested, we'll see that this virus has already spread to every corner of our country but, but that time, it'll be too late. Our healthcare system cannot handle many people being sick at the same time. But god forbid Jaydn and Madysynne's yoga-for-tots class is cancelled!

Research coming out of China is showing that many of the "mild" cases were still many times worse than any flu virus, but the term was used relative to cases that required oxygen, respirators, and other medical intervention. We also know that is is far more contagious than any flu virus.

I am very concerned. Not because I'm an alarmist or prone to undue panic, but because I pay attention. We'd all benefit by approaching this situation with caution, and let common sense and logic guide us in the right direction. There's no harm in being prepared. Willful ignorance is going to compound the problem (much like the spread of the virus is compounding as I type).

I flew across the country and back (CA to MI to CA) in early January and caught something godawful that had me hacking and inert for weeks with symptoms that sound very similar to COVID-19. Between that and the abysmal people that I encountered in transit, I have no desire to leave my house and grounds for a very long while.

I’m in Palm Springs and got a hard to shake bug in early January...no diarrhea only slight cough but no trouble breathing. I rarely get sick too.

by Anonymousreply 90March 11, 2020 1:26 AM

I told my sister she had the virus a few weeks ago (my mom and I were also sick but not like she was). She had odd symptoms. She felt as though she had a cold, but she had a runny nose and no stuffiness. She also had a sore throat, cough and fever, and a day after those symptoms started she had terrible diarrhea. She just thought she had a double whammy cold and stomach virus but this makes more sense. We really thought the symptoms were odd, until I read gastro problems are also a symptom. I bet untold numbers have this and don’t know it.

Vegas people are so arrogant that they honestly think that because there are few recorded cases in Nevada, they have no reason to worry. I would think that the confined spaces as well as people touching everything in sight would make them more scared. But no.

[quote] Such people facilitate catastrophes like the one that is currently unfolding.

It’s not a “catastrophe”, R12. Gain some sense of perspective. Provided that you’re under the age of 70-80, you’re MORE likely to die from a motor vehicle crash than from any virus. So feel free to freak out about “killer cars” instead. Oh wait - people & the media don’t freak out about those higher-rate deaths - they’re too commonplace and “boring” for news headlines, I guess.

And ca. 60,000+ people died during the recent 2017-2018 flu season (including 200 kids) - but, again, no one gave a heck about such “boring” deaths.

[quote] All the people STILL saying it's no worse than the flu and everyone needs to calm down need to shut the fuck up before their shitty false sense of security literally kills people.

It’s worse than the flu, but it’s better than motor vehicle fatality rates. And most people dying are in their 70s and 80s who already have underlying diseases and conditions, R13. Average age of fatal-outcome patients in Italy (the worst hit in Europe) is 81 years old. Guess what - most old people won’t live until their 100th birthday, even without the Coronavirus. If this virus doesn’t get you - than something else will at that age.

The panic you’re generating is bad for health - because stress kills too. I remember reading about the Fukushima nuclear accident - ironically, more people died from the ‘mob hysteria’ than from the radiation. People there became so uncontrollably hysterical that they died in car accidents, from panic-exacerbated heart attacks, etc. So keep calm and carry on. This virus is not trivial, but it’s not as deadly as other things that kill humans daily. I repeat: you’re more likely to die in your car from a fatal road accident than from any virus.

by Anonymousreply 101March 11, 2020 1:51 AM

Ok, here's what I don't understand.

They say the virus has probably been circulating in the US for a couple of months. And since the US is so far behind in testing, the number if cases is surely much higher than we're being told.

But if that's the case, why are number of deaths still so low? I would imagine those death numbers are true, there's no way to hide the number of deaths.

So why is that number still so low and rising so slowly?

by Anonymousreply 102March 11, 2020 1:53 AM

Total deaths in China @ 3,158

Italy @ 631

Iran @ 291

U.S. ranks #7 @ 30

by Anonymousreply 103March 11, 2020 1:57 AM

R102 the numbers aren't changing because things like pneumonia, COPD, congestive heart failure, etc are the causes of death being cited. There are also many who think that they have some 'funky version of the flu' and recover to then later have persisting issues. Plus the US is BIG, just the NY suburb ex is perfect because it took a while for it to blow open, but when it did, it really had quite the mushroom cloud effect.

Another week or two and th US will be in a very different space.

by Anonymousreply 104March 11, 2020 1:59 AM

I had a ton of friends on FB who were reporting a horrible 3 week flu that would come and go in December. This was all in L.A., S.F, Chicago and New York.

r102, perhaps this was all the more mild Covid, and it mutated to the super Covid in January?

Where have you heard that? Link please.

by Anonymousreply 108March 11, 2020 2:03 AM

R102 The virus may have been circulating for some time, but it is just now peaking. Also, we aren't testing as we should because supplies are not readily available to all areas of the US, despite the nonsense that our President and his " team of medical expert wannabes " are feeding us.

As more people are tested, we may see growing numbers.

by Anonymousreply 109March 11, 2020 2:03 AM

R102, because infected people have not developed symptoms until recently. There is a lag time. Imagine a camel where a camel driver adds a straw to his backpack every day. Eventually, they will break his back, right?

If there are great masses of people who all get sick around the same time, the death rate will go up, because healthcare quality will go down. The staff will be sick themselves. The ICU equipment will be insufficient in number to help everybody who needs it. And so forth.

by Anonymousreply 110March 11, 2020 2:05 AM

R100, not necessarily. First of all, a vaccine is eventually likely. Secondly, after populations get hit with a new virus for the first time - our bodies start producing anti-bodies. So that any re-infections the second time round can be less painful and shorter in duration. Because our body’s robust immune system already got to know this virus this time round and started internally producing antibodies to flush it out of our body quicker the next time.

The only problem is that, like most viruses, this one mutates. So our bodies (and virologists) have to constantly tackle new strands. But it’s still doable.

We don’t necessarily have to go into total lock-down every single winter when a new virus comes out of Asia.

by Anonymousreply 111March 11, 2020 2:06 AM

I'm in NYC and think I might have gotten this back in early December. I had a severe chest cold unlike any other I've had. I ran a fever (which never happens), and it would go away, then come back a day later. That went on for like 10 days.

I work from home and didn't go out when I was sick. But I think I got it from being unusually social (holiday parties) and gym-going (to prepare for the holiday calorie intake) right before.

When I went back to the gym in mid-December, I started wiping down the cardio machines before I used them, gawkers be damned. I was not going to go through that again.

The nursing home in Washington State where the virus exploded, is still trying to pass off his theory that the majority of victims most likely died from "old age" rather than Corona.

Nursing Homes are more dangerous than hospitals when it come to spreading and catching diseases.

Today they cancelled all high school basketball championship games in the state of Connecticut because of Covid-19 concerns

by Anonymousreply 115March 11, 2020 2:14 AM

R111, that's going off of the bodies typical response, something I'd read that is problematic in how our bodies deal with this virus is with an over-response from the immune system. It could be like MRSA (despite being viral) in that each time you get reinfection it's much more dangerous than before, and harder to treat. There's so much about this virus that we dont know but given it mutated within 3 months max means it's a big wildcard.

The kidney, liver, lung and heart damage are also going to compound how well the body can recover from reinfection.

I’m fairly worried for myself, but more so for my mom in her eighties. She is healthy and very active, and I’m not sure she’ll slow down and confine herself. My brother and I talked about having her stay with one of us, but he’s got young kids, so we figure she may be safer at her own home.

I bet it was originally spread by some international traveler with little kids in daycare or elementary school. Kids that age probably have pretty mild cases and the parents probably thought it was just a cold or flu. Then little Jaden gave it to their friends’ moms and dads, or the daycare employees.

If Jaden’s parents travel for work and brought it home, and Jaden got a very mild case as little kids do, it could spread invisibly from child to child and parent to parent until the incubation period is over and suddenly everyone has it.

R116, I haven’t heard of any big internal organ damage reports in Britain yet. But severe organ damage among most recovering patients under the age of 70-80 seems pretty rare?

I just got a very long email from Target (as well as a lot of other retailers and Airline companies)- they REALLY want your business:

Target Logo A Note to Our Guests About the Coronavirus from CEO Brian Cornell Over the past few days, so many of you have been in our stores and on our website stocking up on all the essential things you need to keep your families healthy and safe.

[quote] When I went back to the gym in mid-December, I started wiping down the cardio machines before I used them, gawkers be damned

How many of you DLers are still hitting the gym? Are you skipping the pool or the showers / sauna? Are you skipping close-proximity group exercise classes like yoga / spin classes? Have you frozen your gym memberships and switched to exercising at home for the next few months?

I’m still going, at the moment at least. I signed to a brand new swanky gym recently and really want to use it before things get potentially locked down in preventative quarantine. I’m a Millennial so I know my chances of dying from Covid-19 are very minimal.

But I am concerned about accidentally catching the virus and passing it on to my parents (they just turned 60). One of my parents is a smoker and the other has animal allergies affecting breathing, so I’m concerned a respiratory virus would be more risky for them.

I see cleaning staff sanitising some surfaces more frequently in my gym, but I don’t think that will solve potential problems (as the virus is airborne and one cough or sneeze within a 6 feet radius is enough to pass it on to others).

I actually wonder if the pool is a bit safer - does the virus transmit in submerged water?

by Anonymousreply 141March 11, 2020 2:53 AM

R147, I’m not that poster, but I’ve been talking to supermarket employees the last few weeks and I heard a local Walmart employee say that they are planning to go to curbside service only. I don’t think I heard a date.

Judging from what I was told by another chatty market employee at a different store, it looks like markets don’t really know what to do and they’re deciding week by week. They’re not really getting any guidance from any government entity, so they’re just winging it. Some of this stuff may be up to individual store managers too.

I went to a Costco I don’t usually go to on the weekend. One employee stood at the door and wiped down every cart handle before they gave it to you. That employee wore gloves and it looked like most employees at that store wore gloves. The manager there was really on top of things and walking around the store, checking on things. She talked to me and said she had six young employees whose job it was to take care of things out in front. I’m going back to that store again, it was spotless.

“Don’t panic. Keep calm.” is not helpful.

One common response we’ve seen on social media to people that are pointing out the reasons to be concerned, is “don’t panic” or “keep calm”. This is, to say the least, not helpful. No-one is suggesting that panic is an appropriate response. For some reason, however, “keep calm” is a very popular reaction in certain circles (but not amongst any epidemiologists, whose job it is to track these things). Perhaps “keep calm” helps some people feel better about their own inaction, or makes them feel somehow superior to people who they imagine are running around like a headless chicken.

But “keep calm” can easily lead to a failure to prepare and respond. In China, tens of millions were put on lock-down and two new hospitals were built by the time they reached the statistics that the US has now. Italy waited too long, and just today (Sunday March 8) they reported 1492 new cases and 133 new deaths, despite locking down 16 million people. Based on the best information we’re able to ascertain at this stage, just 2-3 weeks ago Italy was in the same position that the US and UK are in today (in terms of infection statistics).”

I’m quoting that from that statistician’s paper linked above. This needs to be repeated here. The stay calm shit is nauseating and annoying. If you have nothing more to contribute SHUT THE FUCK UP.

So how does this work? I just received an email from a fellow rescue cat volunteer. She is self-quarantining because of possible exposure to CV at her kid's school. We volunteer in a tiny room at a pet store. I don't have any direct contact with her because we volunteer on different days, but I spent hours in that little room within 4-5 days after her shift. Does that count as exposure? I sanitize throughout my shift--it's standard procedure all volunteers to keep the cats healthy.

[quote] “Don’t panic. Keep calm.” is not helpful.

No, it is helpful, R168. Anxiety & stress is a contributing factor to lower immune function - so reminding people to stay calm IS actually helpful.

And reminding people not to give in to a panicky stampede (e.g. buying up supplies in a panic like for the apocalypse) is also helpful. Because mass anxiety has already resulted in many people buying up 50 packs of everything, leading to shortages for other people.

[quote] For some reason, however, “keep calm” is a very popular reaction in certain circles (but not amongst any epidemiologists

No, it’s the official reaction among UK epidemiologists.

[quote] Perhaps “keep calm” helps some people feel better about their own inaction

And what “action” precisely am I supposed to be taking right now? It’s an airborne virus (so it’s incredibly easily transmitted, similar to the airborne flu). Should everyone just stop breathing? Should everyone walk 6 feet away from each other for the next 18 months?

Inaction is actually the best strategy for most citizens. Stay home as much as possible and don’t try to lead an overly active, social lifestyle right now.

[quote] In China, tens of millions were put on lock-down and two new hospitals were built by the time they reached the statistics that the US has now.

China is the epicentre (as it also was for the recent SARS virus, etc). So it’s not like they have any choice other than full lockdown in the epicentre and building more hospitals for the epicentre (which they need because many recent viruses originate exactly in China).

China can build new hospitals in a matter of days because they have the most gigantic construction workforce in the world. But their quick construction is not always the best - a building housing quarantined patients recently collapsed in China, killing some and injuring many.

[quote] Italy waited too long

A lockdown delays the virus - it doesn’t necessarily stop it. As soon as the lockdown is lifted - people will start travelling and potentially getting infected again. Because it’s a foreign virus - so visitors from abroad can bring it into the country again at any time.

The only thing that could have prevented this virus from spreading to Italy was a complete ban on all travel into the country. But, in our global world, a country can’t survive for long in complete isolation. It will eventually have to open up its borders - and people will still get infected at that point.

[quote] If you have nothing more to contribute SHUT THE FUCK UP.

“Shut the fuck up” yourself, dear. Scientists are suggesting that this virus might become a seasonal / recurrent winter one. So many people may still get it sooner or later.

CNN-“Extraordinary” demand is threatening availability of key coronavirus testing tool, manufacturer says

The maker of a critical tool required to run the coronavirus test kit used in US public health labs is facing a surge in demand that is challenging its capacity to deliver the product, according to the company.

Qiagen, whose tool helps extract viral genetic information from patient samples, said in a tweet Tuesday that it has established a “task force” to “evaluate incoming orders in this period of extraordinary demand.”

A shortage of its products could threaten to further delay coronavirus testing across the country, because Qiagen’s tools are required to run -- but not included in -- the coronavirus test kit distributed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

On Monday, the company said it had “not seen any near-term impacts from the coronavirus outbreak on supplies of materials and components,” but it said that increasing demand “may lead to backorders with delayed delivery or reduced allocation of affected product.”

The tool is a necessary step in testing for the novel coronavirus; it removes RNA, the genetic code of the virus, from a patient’s throat swab or cough sample. That RNA, extracted from a patient specimen, is then compared against snippets of the virus itself, determining whether a patient has been infected with the virus.

CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield acknowledged the potential shortage of the tool on Tuesday in an interview with Politico.

The US Food and Drug Administration, which oversees laboratory tests in the US, said that a similar tool developed by another company, Roche, could be used in its place. But that could require labs to acquire auxiliary equipment for Roche’s platform and retrain staff who run the tests – leading to further delays.

R96

This isn't about one's likelihood to die from CV. It's about many people getting sick at the same time and overwhelming a healthcare system that already runs on razor thin margins. This is a long illness. Hospital bed and ICU turnover will be very slow. Once all of our healthcare resources are consumed, younger and healthier people outside of the 70-80 range will also die when they can't get care. And you don't believe me, look at the other countries in the world that have this exact scenario playing out right now. We're only a couple weeks behind their timelines and we are LESS prepared, with our Psychopath-in-Chief lies faster than the CDC can bungle test kits.

[quote]Provided that you’re under the age of 70-80, you’re MORE likely to die from a motor vehicle crash than from any virus. So feel free to freak out about “killer cars” instead.

All car accident victims don't storm the hospitals at one time.

[quote]And ca. 60,000+ people died during the recent 2017-2018 flu season (including 200 kids) - but, again, no one gave a heck about such “boring” deaths.

Did you snooze your way though middle school math?

Yes, the flu kills tens of thousands per year, but that’s after having infected tens of millions. By contrast, COVID-19 has “only” killed about 3,800 people, but it’s also “only” infected just over 100,000 in three months. The flu's infection and mortality rates are somewhat predictable. COVID-19 is new and unpredictable (and without any treatment or vaccine). Flu: 0.01-0.02%. COVID-19: 2-3.5%. Give CV a full year of spread and fatalities, and it will kill far more people than the flu.

See if you can get an eighth grader to decipher that for you.

by Anonymousreply 212March 11, 2020 5:26 AM

Speaking of remedial math R212, the denominator in that 2-3.5% mortality rate you quoted is almost certainly significantly understated (many cases where people were ill and didn't go to the doctor, and certainly many cases where people weren't tested and therefore not captured in the "infected" count). Therefore the resulting % may be significantly overstated. There just isn't enough data to know yet.

CNN-Uber may temporarily suspend accounts of riders and drivers with coronavirus

Uber said it is considering suspending the accounts of riders and drivers who have contracted the novel coronavirus or have been "exposed" to it.

"We have a team available 24/7 to support public health authorities in their response to the epidemic. Working with them, we may temporarily suspend the accounts of riders or drivers confirmed to have contracted or been exposed to COVID-19," the company said in a statement. "We’re also consulting with an epidemiologist to make sure our efforts as a company are grounded in medical advice."

Here are some of the other steps the company said it would take:

Drivers or delivery persons diagnosed with the virus or asked to self-isolate by a public health authority will receive financial assistance for up to 14 days while their account is on hold. Uber said it has already offered assistance to drivers in some areas and is "working to quickly implement this worldwide."

R212, how are you LESS prepared? I’m in London and all my local convenience stores have been out of even BASIC soap and hand sanitiser for days now. The health minister here is telling everyone that the ‘main’ preventative measure is to simply use soap or sanitiser - but many pharmacies & stores are even out of both, lol! Total circus. Schools aren’t closed, gyms aren’t closed, pubs aren’t closed. People are being asked to simply stay home if they get mild-to-moderate “flu-like” symptoms - and not even to get tested in a hospital! (Because they probably know they don’t have enough test-kits for everyone). No one is even monitoring if people actually stay at home or not - everyone just does whatever the heck they want.

In Italy, they were so unprepared that they had to treat patients in CORRIDORS (they didn’t prepare enough hospital rooms).

I honestly question how you can be less prepared than this European circus.

[quote] Did you snooze your way though middle school math? ... Give CV a full year of spread and fatalities, and it will kill far more people than the flu. See if you can get an eighth grader to decipher that for you.

Did YOU snooze your way through elementary English class? Because you lack reading comprehension skills. Show me where you deliriously think I said that influenza has a higher mortality rate - go on, show me. You can’t - because I never said that. You’re just projecting your own strawman thoughts on me and then arguing with yourself. And you missed the entire point because you can’t read properly. I said that nobody gave a heck about the recent 60,000+ (!) US influenza deaths! After that season, 55% of US citizens STILL didn’t bother getting a flu shot. I was pointing out the hypocrisy of everyone freaking out now but not even doing much to stop even the regular flu epidemic from killing many, many thousands a few seasons ago. Apparently those 60,000+ flu virus fatalities are too ‘boring’ to matter - only Coronavirus deaths matter apparently. Go figure.

MSNBC's Stephanie "Jugs" Ruhle brought up a good point on Twitter: These college kids who are being told not to come back after spring break paid out the nose for room and board for a full semester. Will they get some of their money back? What about those who don't have a convenient home to go back to?

As requested, R187.

Also, R247, do you care to pull any more misinformation out of your ass?

[quote]Dr. Daniele Macchini, who works at the Humanitas Gavazzeni hospital in the northern city of Bergamo, warned in a lengthy post on Facebook about the dangers of complacency in the relentless war against the insidious virus.

[quote]“After much thought about whether and what to write about what is happening to us, I felt that silence was not responsible,” Macchini wrote in his post, as translated by Dr. Silvia Stringhini, an epidemiologist and researcher at the Geneva University’s Institute of Global Health.

[quote]“I will therefore try to convey to people far from our reality what we are living in Bergamo in these days of Covid-19 pandemic. I understand the need not to create panic, but when the message of the dangerousness of what is happening does not reach people I shudder,” he said.

[quote]“I myself watched with some amazement the reorganization of the entire hospital in the past week, when our current enemy was still in the shadows: the wards slowly ’emptied,’ elective activities were interrupted,” he continued in the chilling post, which was shared more than 29,000 times.

[quote]“All this rapid transformation brought an atmosphere of silence and surreal emptiness to the corridors of the hospital that we did not yet understand, waiting for a war that was yet to begin and that many (including me) were not so sure would ever come with such ferocity,” he said.

[quote]“I still remember my night call a week ago when I was waiting for the results of a swab. When I think about it, my anxiety over one possible case seems almost ridiculous and unjustified, now that I’ve seen what’s happening. Well, the situation now is dramatic to say the least,” Macchini added.

[quote]“The war has literally exploded and battles are uninterrupted day and night. But now that need for beds has arrived in all its drama. One after the other the departments that had been emptied fill up at an impressive pace.

[quote]“The boards with the names of the patients, of different colors depending on the operating unit, are now all red and instead of surgery you see the diagnosis, which is always the damned same: bilateral interstitial pneumonia.”

[quote]The doctor urged people not to describe COVID-19 as a bad case of the flu.

[quote]“Now, explain to me which flu virus causes such a rapid drama. … And while there are still people who boast of not being afraid by ignoring directions, protesting because their normal routine is ‘temporarily’ put in crisis, the epidemiological disaster is taking place,” he said.

[quote]“And there are no more surgeons, urologists, orthopedists, we are only doctors who suddenly become part of a single team to face this tsunami that has overwhelmed us.

[quote]“Cases are multiplying, we arrive at a rate of 15-20 admissions per day all for the same reason. The results of the swabs now come one after the other: positive, positive, positive. Suddenly the E.R. is collapsing.”

[quote]Describing every available ventilator as “gold,” Macchini said the doctors and nurses working at his side are exhausted.

Not only do a lot of people visit nursing homes on a regular basis, a lot of relatives who live out of town pour in over the holidays. We just celebrated Christmas, and Easter is coming soon. Do the math.

Also, a large portion of visitors are elderly people who come to visit their elderly friends. Nursing homes all over the country will be hit hard if they don't clamp down on visitors.

Yes, after imposing quarantines, lockdowns, travel restrictions, and mandatory social isolation measures on at least 750 million people. It has nothing to do with the virus relenting.

by Anonymousreply 262March 11, 2020 7:28 AM

It's not uncommon for nursing home workers, especially CNA's to work a second job in another nursing home.

Many nursing homes use temp agencies to compensate for call offs, thus you have a group of health care worker who go from nursing home to nursing on a daily basis.

This is another factor that adds to the large number of cases.

by Anonymousreply 263March 11, 2020 7:33 AM

Not everyone in nursing homes are old. One of the Washington victims was a nursing home patient in his 40s.

MOST of the people in nursing homes tend to be elderly but anyone who is in a weakened state from an illness or surgery who needs nursing during recovery can be admitted.

[quote] the percentage cases that do need medical intervention will be enough to trigger systematic healthcare failure in any country. Your inability to engage with reality doesn't change anything.

R254, any country? Britain already had systematic healthcare failure during multiple winter seasons, regardless of CV. During many winters, patients were treated in corridors because there weren’t enough rooms. Does it suck? Yes. Is it cause for mass anxiety? No, the system already experienced crises way before CV and hospitals found ways to cope.

[quote] Sky News (reporting about the situation every winter season): “Treating A&E patients in hospital corridors is becoming the new norm, according to nurses. The problem is so widespread that almost half of those polled said the term "corridor nursing" is formally used in their hospital.

R270, Italians are actually the ones infecting many "Englishmen" - but, sure, let's all blame the "Englishmen" for Italy becoming a viral epicentre in Europe.

The number of deaths in Spain (35), France (33) and the US (28) exceed those in the UK. But, sure, let's blame the "arrogant" approach in the UK. As if neighbouring France and Spain are doing any better.

[quote] Little England Prevails!

You joke, r273, but ironically closing off the border for at least a few months until the summer would have helped delay the spread of the virus and ease the load on the NHS (there are usually more hospital beds available in the summer, so it would have been easier to cope with the virus and treat patients in the summer).

But of course immediately preventatively closing the border (with China but also with the EU which was via Italy, Spain and France) would then have people yelling about "xenophobia", "racism", etc. I guess people would rather get infected with Coronavirus then come across as racist or xenophobic.

R279, you "expected better" even though it's already been publicly discussed for many years now that the NHS is in a budget deficit crisis? What exactly did you "expect" from an already over-loaded free public health system?

As for the "pathetic lack of a response" - closing off the border in good time would have been THE most effective preventative measure against the virus. So how it spread and where it spread from IS exactly relevant. Not letting risky groups from Asia and Italy cross the border would have been much more effective than telling everyone to stay in their homes (a measure which many will violate anyway).

Up to 70% of the population is likely to be infected with the coronavirus that is currently spreading around the world, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says, adding that since there was currently no cure the focus had to be on slowing its spread.

“When the virus is out there, the population has no immunity and no therapy exists, then 60% to 70% of the population will be infected,” she told a news conference in Berlin. “The process has to be focused on not overburdening the health system by slowing the virus’s spread... From WSJ, behind a paywall:

Marc Thibault, a 48-year-old man from Rhode Island who was one of the first Americans to be diagnosed with Covid-19, shared his experiences with WSJ. The married father of two, who is a vice principal of student life at a private Catholic school, tested positive after returning from a school trip to Europe that went through Italy.

Mr. Thibault had no symptoms during the trip, but he felt unusually sluggish on the flight back to the U.S.

“Something is wrong,” he told his wife when he finally got home to Rhode Island near midnight on Saturday, Feb. 22. He went straight to bed, and then the next day, went to a walk-in clinic. Mr. Thibault has asthma, but he exercises everyday and said he rarely gets sick.

He stayed home from work, but just got worse, with growing fatigue, a dry cough and something that resembled bronchitis. He went to a hospital but was again told he didn’t meet the criteria for the test, he said.

Doctors there were concerned, however, and Mr. Thibault said he quickly got a call from the Rhode Island Department of Health, which told him to get tested immediately.

By later in the week, Mr. Thibault was at the Miriam Hospital, where he was admitted. He tested positive for the virus.

He says the virus now hit him “like a hurricane.” He was weak and had trouble breathing. The hospital whisked him into the ICU, where nurses donned hazmat-style suits to enter his room.

They inserted a breathing tube, and put another tube down his throat for medicine to deal with pneumonia that developed in his lungs, he said.

Gagging and coughing, Mr. Thibault said he felt scared. His lungs would fill with saliva and nurses would dash in and clear them out, only to have to do it again two hours later.

“The feeling of choking. That was the worst part,” he said. “You feel like you’re asphyxiating, and you’re panicking because you can’t breathe.”

The agony went on for days.

Last week, he forced himself to write a note to his wife, telling her that if his lungs collapsed, to not keep him on life support.

Slowly he began to get better. The doctors took out his breathing tube and to his relief, his lungs picked up the pace.

“It almost killed me,” he said. “It’s alarming when I hear people minimize it as a simple cold. It was no simple cold for me.”

About half our staff came down with it in the next couple of days, followed by the same happening at my other job Christmas Eve. I don't want to look like I'm ducking work...but don't want to make the client uncomfortable if I'm sneezing.

There is an article in the NY post that people with mild symptoms are very infectious, 1000 times more than SARS or something, on mobile, can't post

by Anonymousreply 338March 11, 2020 3:40 PM

r336, try an OTC allergy med and see if it alleviates your symptoms. If it does, voila! It's allergies. If you have no temperature, go to work and tell people you have allergies and are taking an OTC medicine. Wash your hands. Carry tissues. Don't shake hands with people. Although I don't know why you have people coming into town, most companies are suspending unnecessary travel and doing everything by phone and video.

by Anonymousreply 339March 11, 2020 3:42 PM

NYPOST: Coronavirus patients with mild symptoms are likely to be extremely contagious soon after being infected with the bug, a new study says.

Researchers revealed in the study published in the medRxiv journal that people with mild cases emit high rates of the virus during the first five days after infection, the Telegraph reported.

The study, which has not been peer-reviewed, looked at nine patients who tested positive and determined those with just cold symptoms could be very contagious.

“You don’t have to be seriously ill to pass the virus onto other people,” Dr. Clemens Martin Wendtner, who is the study’s co-author, told the Telegraph.

The period when these patients are most infectious — known as “peak shedding” — shows the virus being emitted at a rate 1,000 times higher than during the same time for people infected with SARS, the report said.

R337, if there's even a functioning CDC or Health Services after Trump's budget cuts.

[quote] President Trump’s 2021 budget request. It proposed cutting Health and Human Services funding by $9.5 billion, including a 15 percent cut of $1.2 billion to the CDC and a $35 million decrease to the Infectious Diseases Rapid Response Reserve Fund's annual contribution.

And this is after coronavirus hit.

by Anonymousreply 341March 11, 2020 3:43 PM

I wonder if I had it too. (I should be so lucky.) I had a rough cold in early January, then got better for a few days and then got sick again... this time I thought it was flu not cold, because of low fever and aches and pains, but also respiratory symptoms. With my luck it was just run of the mill bugs and I'm still gonna get this one.

by Anonymousreply 342March 11, 2020 3:50 PM

R339, no shit, it's my stupid manager and company. The clients and I are in the same city. It's my manager flying in from another state. And my global megacorp is still allowing travel for client meetings. I think that should change to travel only for most critical meetings but I'm just a lowly peon.

Manager insists on carrying on with his travel and this meeting. The client actually sent out an email saying they were converting all their meetings to virtual so people wouldn't have to travel. Then they asked me if I wanted to still meet since we're in the same city. My manager swooped in and said he was still going to fly in...so client agreed to stick with the in person meeting.

The only way this meeting is going to be canceled is if the company sends out a directive stopping all travel, but since my manager is flying tomorrow, it may be too late.

Mt. Sinai high school in Port Jefferson, LI has just cancelled classes. My nephew is a teacher there. He got divorced last year.

I really feel bad for people who are compelled to deal with the law at times like this. By which I mean, people involved in civil suits, or criminal charges, or divorce proceedings. My nephew’s wife was acting like a crazy person for two years during theIr divorce. She has two brothers who are cops so they were coaching her.

She would bait my nephew with verbal abuse and then whip out her camera to catch his reaction. Initially, she said that all she wanted was the house and the kids, but that’s all they have! My nephew is a 6’3” gorilla, but he’s as gentle as a lamb. She’s small, so the optics favored her. She hit her head in the pool a few years ago, and I think that changed her somehow. She used to be sweet. That divorce is over with shared custody. A few weeks ago, she charged my 71 year old sister, her X-mother-in-law, with criminal battery, because my sister hugged her. My sister is a “consoler-nurturer”. So my sister has to deal with court matters now.

I don’t want to go without my US mail or UPS FedEx deliveries. I enjoy that. I know the virus can come in that way, but, “oh, well”.

Oh, thanks for the well wishes, above! And I’m 59 until August - don’t rush me R202! 😜

CNN-CDC director says some coronavirus-related deaths have been found posthumously

During the House Oversight Committee discussion on the novel coronavirus response, the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said some deaths from coronavirus have been discovered posthumously.

Rep. Harley Rouda asked CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield if it’s possible that some flu patients may have been misdiagnosed and actually had coronavirus.

"The standard practice is the first thing you do is test for influenza, so if they had influenza they would be positive," Redfield said.

Rouda then asked Redfield if they are doing posthumous testing.

Redfield said there has been "a surveillance system of deaths from pneumonia, that the CDC has; it’s not in every city, ever state, every hospital.”

Rouda followed up and asked, “So we could have some people in the United States dying for what appears to be influenza when in fact it could be the coronavirus?”

The doctor replied that “some cases have actually been diagnosed that way in the United States today.”

The Federal Reserve is delaying processing dollars that have been repatriated from Asia. The Louvre Museum in Paris isn't accepting cash from visitors. And Iran has urged its citizens to stop using bank notes over fears the coronavirus can be transmitted to humans through contaminated objects like cash.

Public health experts believe the novel coronavirus, which causes the potentially deadly COVID-19 disease, is transmittable through "fomites" — surfaces, including paper money, that have been handled by an infected person.

"The belief is that these viruses can stay on surfaces in their fully active states for at least 10 days. That includes cash and all kinds of other surfaces that people normally touch," Dr. Sanjay Maggirwar, chair of the George Washington University School of Medicine's department of microbiology, immunology and tropical medicine, told CBS MoneyWatch. "So certainly with the coronavirus, cash handling is a concern."

Trump Hasn't Been Tested For Coronavirus Despite Possible Exposure, And Refuses To Take Precautions…

At every possible moment Donald Trump and his team of Republican incompetents chooses the worst possible path. Reuters is now reporting via four administration sources that the White House "has ordered federal health officials to treat top-level coronavirus meetings as classified."

"The officials said that dozens of classified discussions about such topics as the scope of infections, quarantines and travel restrictions" have been held in a secure room—excluding government experts who did not have the requisite security clearances, says Reuters. The administration has literally been keeping coronavirus response discussions secret from some of the government's own experts.

Did it make a difference? It likely did. Reuters quotes an anonymous official as saying "some very critical people" were not allowed in those discussions, which began in January. It also seems evident that the classification was used by the White House, yet again, to withhold information from the public that the White House believed could be damaging to Donald Trump: The news that the now-pandemic was all but certain to arrive here, would have real and damaging effects, and would cost American lives.

R374, yes. I'm connected to China both personally and professionally, and was extremely concerned when I saw images of Hubei officials blocking roads out of Wuhan with boulders and impassible mounds of dirt. Knowing what I know about China, I knew this had to be massive for them to be taking such drastic measures. The exponential spread has begun and by the time our own officials take it seriously, it'll be too late. I've urged friends and family to prepare for weeks and have been mocked, dismissed, and told I'm crazy. Our focus needs to be not on what's happening today, but on what will be happening tomorrow, next week, next month. We had the luxury of advance warning and we squandered it.

What Does the Coronavirus Do to the Body? Here’s what scientists have learned about how the new virus infects and attacks cells and how it can affect organs beyond the lungs. As cases of coronavirus infection proliferate around the world and governments take extraordinary measures to limit the spread, there is still a lot of confusion about what exactly the virus does to people’s bodies.

The symptoms — fever, cough, shortness of breath — can signal any number of illnesses, from flu to strep to the common cold. Here is what medical experts and researchers have learned so far about the progression of the infection caused by this new coronavirus — and what they still don’t know.

How does this coronavirus cause infection? The virus is spread through droplets transmitted into the air from coughing or sneezing, which people nearby can take in through their nose, mouth or eyes. The viral particles in these droplets travel quickly to the back of your nasal passages and to the mucous membranes in the back of your throat, attaching to a particular receptor in cells, beginning there.

Coronavirus particles have spiked proteins sticking out from their surfaces, and these spikes hook onto cell membranes, allowing the virus’s genetic material to enter the human cell.

That genetic material proceeds to “hijack the metabolism of the cell and say, in effect, ‘Don’t do your usual job. Your job now is to help me multiply and make the virus,’” said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville

How does that process cause respiratory problems?

As copies of the virus multiply, they burst out and infect neighboring cells. The symptoms often start in the back of the throat with a sore throat and a dry cough.

The virus then “crawls progressively down the bronchial tubes,” Dr. Schaffner said. When the virus reaches the lungs, their mucous membranes become inflamed. That can damage the alveoli or lung sacs and they have to work harder to carry out their function of supplying oxygen to the blood that circulates throughout our body and removing carbon dioxide from the blood so that it can be exhaled.

by Anonymousreply 400March 11, 2020 9:12 PM

NYT continued

“If you get swelling there, it makes it that much more difficult for oxygen to swim across the mucous membrane,” said Dr. Amy Compton-Phillips, the chief clinical officer for the Providence Health System, which included the hospital in Everett, Wash., that had the first reported case of coronavirus in the United States, in January.

The swelling and the impaired flow of oxygen can cause those areas in the lungs to fill with fluid, pus and dead cells. Pneumonia, an infection in the lung, can occur.

Some people have so much trouble breathing they need to be put on a ventilator. In the worst cases, known as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, the lungs fill with so much fluid that no amount of breathing support can help, and the patient dies.

What trajectory does the virus take in the lungs?

Dr. Shu-Yuan Xiao, a professor of pathology at the University of Chicago School of Medicine has examined pathology reports on coronavirus patients in China. He said the virus appears to start in peripheral areas on both sides of the lung and can take a while to reach the upper respiratory tract, the trachea and other central airways.

by Anonymousreply 401March 11, 2020 9:14 PM

NYT continued

Dr. Xiao, who also serves as the director of the Center For Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics at Wuhan University, said that pattern helps explain why in Wuhan, where the outbreak began, many of the earliest cases were not identified immediately.

The initial testing regimen in many Chinese hospitals did not always detect infection in the peripheral lungs, so some people with symptoms were sent home without treatment.

“They’d either go to other hospitals to seek treatment or stay home and infect their family,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons there was such a wide spread

A recent study from a team led by researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai found that more than half of 121 patients in China had normal CT scans early in their disease. That study and work by Dr. Xiao show that as the disease progresses, CT scans show “ground glass opacities,” a kind of hazy veil in parts of the lung that are evident in many types of viral respiratory infections. Those opaque areas can scatter and thicken in places as the illness worsens, creating what radiologists call a “crazy paving” pattern on the scan.

NYT END

What do scientists still not know about coronavirus patients? A lot. Although the illness resembles SARS in many respects and has elements in common with influenza and pneumonia, the course a patient’s coronavirus will take is not yet fully understood.

Some patients can remain stable for over a week and then suddenly develop pneumonia, Dr. Diaz said. Some patients seem to recover but then develop symptoms again.

Dr. Xiao said that some patients in China recovered but got sick again, apparently because they had damaged and vulnerable lung tissue that was subsequently attacked by bacteria in their body. Some of those patients ended up dying from a bacterial infection, not the virus. But that didn’t appear to cause the majority of deaths, he said.

Other cases have been tragic mysteries. Dr. Xiao said he personally knew a man and woman who got infected, but seemed to be improving. Then the man deteriorated and was hospitalized.

“He was in I.C.U., getting oxygen, and he texted his wife that he was getting better, he had good appetite and so on,” Dr. Xiao said. “But then in the late afternoon, she stopped receiving texts from him. She didn’t know what was going on. And by 10 p.m., she got a notice from the hospital that he had passed.”

From the city to the state to the federal level, what our leaders are telling us is a lesson in what NOT to do. All these arbitrary numbers: groups of 250, 500, 1000. Doesn't matter. The virus is endemic. There are tens of thousands of cases already. Only widespread social isolation can slow it (not stop it). We are a nation of fools.

I was at the grocery store today, so I went to the cleaning products isle and picked up a canister of Clorox disinfecting wipes. As I was doing that, a man walked by and said, "You won't need that." Just as soon as he said that, he walked away.

So, the man was either

(A) The Angel of Death telling me that there was no point tn buying the disinfecting wipes because my imminent demise was assured; or

(b) A Deplorable who believes the Coronavirus is a scare drummed up by fake news.

Sam Harris came out with a pair of podcasts yesterday and today on the coronovirus; I'm listening to the first one with Nicholas Christakis of Yale and I have to confess it's scaring me: basically predicting hundreds of thousands of people dead.

Harris says he knows specifically of 5 people (who returned from Italy in February) in Los Angeles who have the virus, 2 of them in intensive care, 1 in an induced coma, but that the official count (as of the recording) for LA is only 7 -- so the actual numbers are probably much, much higher than those being reported.

Harris has made both podcasts available for free.

Here’s what I’m going to cover in this article, with lots of charts, data and models with plenty of sources:

How many cases of coronavirus will there be in your area?

What will happen when these cases materialize?

What should you do?

When?

When you’re done reading the article, this is what you’ll take away:

The coronavirus is coming to you.

It’s coming at an exponential speed: gradually, and then suddenly.

It’s a matter of days. Maybe a week or two.

When it does, your healthcare system will be overwhelmed.

Your fellow citizens will be treated in the hallways.

Exhausted healthcare workers will break down. Some will die.

They will have to decide which patient gets the oxygen and which one dies.

The only way to prevent this is social distancing today. Not tomorrow. Today.

That means keeping as many people home as possible, starting now.

As a politician, community leader or business leader, you have the power and the responsibility to prevent this.

You might have fears today: What if I overreact? Will people laugh at me? Will they be angry at me? Will I look stupid? Won’t it be better to wait for others to take steps first? Will I hurt the economy too much?

But in 2–4 weeks, when the entire world is in lockdown, when the few precious days of social distancing you will have enabled will have saved lives, people won’t criticize you anymore: They will thank you for making the right decision.

1010 WINS @1010WINS · 9m BREAKING: Usher at 2 Broadway shows tests positive for coronavirus, theaters getting 'deep cleaning'

by Anonymousreply 425March 11, 2020 9:58 PM

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An usher at two Broadway shows has tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus, forcing the venues to aggressively clean the buildings and inform theater-goers, the theater owners announced Wednesday.

The usher -- who is now under quarantine -- worked March 3 to 7 at "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.' in previews at the Booth Theater, which seats 766. It stars Laurie Metcalf and Rupert Everett.

The unidentified individual also worked at "Six," in previews at the 1,031-seat Brooks Atkinson Theater on Feb. 25 and March 1.

Wednesday's performance will go on, though. Ticketholders may exchange their tickets for a later date, though.

The Shubert Organization and the Nederlander Organization, which own the venues, issued a joint statement:

From the grocery store I go to.

Dear Valued Customer,

At Fry's, our customers are like family. And like you, during these last few weeks we’ve been focused on doing all the things we need to do to keep our families safe and healthy.

As America’s grocer, we’re here for our customers and communities when they need us most, with open stores and openhearted hospitality.

We believe that everyone deserves to have access to fresh, affordable food and essentials, especially in times of uncertainty. That’s why our teams are working so hard to keep our stores clean, open and stocked. That’s why we took the precautionary step on March 2 to limit the number of cold, flu and sanitary products per order…so everyone can have access to the items they need. And that’s why our supply chain teams are working to ensure that the food, medicine and cleaning supplies our customers need are reaching our stores as quickly as possible and are available through our pickup, delivery and ship services.

We activated our preparedness plan several weeks ago, and we continue to monitor the rapidly evolving situation. We’re following guidance from federal, state and local agencies, including the CDC and other health organizations.

Here are the steps we’re taking to protect our customers and associates:

In Our Stores • Cleaning commonly used areas more often, including cashier stations, self-checkouts, credit card terminals, conveyor belts and food service counters, and cleaning shelves when restocking products. • Sanitizing restrooms more frequently and restocking with supplies, including soap, paper towels and hand sanitizer. • Adding extra hand sanitizer at cashier stations, food service counters, and all Pharmacy, The Little Clinic and Starbucks locations. • Wiping down shopping carts, baskets and equipment. • Partnering with our suppliers to replenish high-demand preparedness products. • Continuing to provide our customers with free disinfectant wipes at our store entrances to sanitize their shopping carts or baskets. • Following best practices for safe food handling, as always. For Our Associates • Encouraging our associates to closely monitor their health and well-being. • Providing hand sanitizer and tissues in breakrooms and meeting rooms. • Asking our associates to stay home if they, or someone in their household, are sick. • Providing financial support from our Helping Hands fund – a company-sponsored employee assistance fund – to associates who may be directly affected. • Suspending business air travel for associates through March 31, 2020 and recommending virtual meetings. For Our Customers • Encouraging our customers to follow the CDC’s suggested hygiene practices to reduce the spread of the virus. • Recommending that our customers also practice safe food handling at home. In everything we do, we’re guided by our values and our Purpose: to Feed the Human Spirit. We strive to make decisions that balance the safety of our associates with our commitments to our customers and communities. And above all else, we’ll be there for our communities when they need us most.

Thank you for being a loyal customer.

by Anonymousreply 461March 11, 2020 10:52 PM

FREAKING THE FUCK OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tests Show the Coronavirus Can Live on Some Surfaces for Up to 3 Days

On Wednesday, scientists employed by federal health agencies working with researchers at Princeton and UCLA found that the coronavirus can live in the air for up to three hours, and on surfaces for up to three days. However, the researchers assert that the study does not prove anyone has yet been infected from touching contaminated surfaces or breathing coronavirus particles in the air.

In the study, published Wednesday, the team put COVID-19 into the air with a nebulizer, re-creating what would happen if a patient coughed. The findings, which have not yet been peer-reviewed, showed that the virus remained viable for up to three hours in the air, for four hours on copper surfaces, up to 24 hours on cardboard, and from two to three days on plastic and stainless steel.

The researchers also noted that the viability of the novel coronavirus was similar to that of tests done during the outbreak of SARS in 2003 — suggesting that the ability for the virus to live outside a host does not account for the intensity of the 2020 pandemic. They suggest that the difference in the size of the outbreaks could be contributed to evidence suggesting COVID-19 patients “shed and transmit the virus while pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic.” The study states that other factors “likely to play a role include the infectious dose required to establish an infection, the stability of virus in mucus, and environmental factors such as temperature and relative humidity.”

If verified, the study’s findings would help explain the growing number of “community spread” patients — those who did not have known contact with an infected person. It also suggests the impossibility of containment in the United States this late in the outbreak, as the Trump administration continues to bungle COVID-19 testing. As of Sunday, the U.S. had conducted five tests for every 1 million people, while the United Kingdom and the Netherlands had done around 350. South Korea, which has experienced 60 coronavirus deaths to the United States’ 31, has conducted some 3,692 tests per million people.

Instead, the president is expected to sign within days what the White House calls a more limited designation to allow the federal government to cover small business loans, paychecks for hourly workers and delay tax bills, giving him a way to begin boosting the economy without waiting for Congress to sign off on an economic stimulus package.

Stay focused on Spain 2188, plus 493 than yesterday, and 49 death. On March 2 Italy had 2034 cases and 52 death: it is the same progression only 9 days late, same mortality rate too. On March 3 Italy has had 2502 cases and 79 death, in total. Germany gives totally unreliable data, 1908 (plus 393) cases and only 3 death and 9 critical, same as yesterday not even one more: each region (Länder) collets indipendently the data and has no obligation to send them to the central government. Look at France 1784 cases,  33 death and 86 serious-critical: is the same trend as in Spain and Italy. The numbers don't lie if you can read them and governments are not so unfair to their citizens to hide the data.

by Anonymousreply 471March 11, 2020 11:13 PM

Chicago hospital builds "forward triage" tent for coronavirus protection

Rush University Medical Center in Chicago has built a large tent in its “forward triage” area, an enclosed area outside its emergency room, which was originally partly designed to receive infectious disease patients.

The area serves as the hospital’s ambulance and private vehicle bay for incoming patients suspected of having the virus.

Rush is considered one of the best suited Chicago hospitals to handle coronavirus patients.

Hospital spokesperson Charles Jolie told CNN that all the air inside the tent and the ambulance bay is sanitized before it is exhausted outside to reduce the chances of contamination elsewhere. Jolie said the purpose of the tent is to add one additional layer of protection to ensure that patients elsewhere in the hospital who may be at risk of contracting the virus do not get infected.

So if you're 70 and get this horrible disease you have to stay home and accept that there will be no attempt made to save you? Or worse, you're abandoned right in the hospital? Can you imagine the despair for the person and their family? It's unacceptable.

The Italian Doctor who stated that they're "letting people over 65 just die" should really have kept his mouth shut.

How long until we see ads from law firms inviting you to sue doctors and hospitals for allowing your loved ones to die from blatant ignorance and neglect. Or perhaps a class action suit against cruise lines for not properly responding to the Corona crisis, trapping you on a ship and preventing needing medical care?

Maybe Trump can be sued for pathological lies and extreme denial causing needless panic and death?

CNN-US official says China's response to coronavirus cost the world "two months to respond"

Robert O’Brien, President Trump’s national security adviser, blasted the Chinese government for their response to the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, saying they “covered up” the outbreak and “probably” cost the world “two months to respond.”

“There’s lots of open source reporting from China, from Chinese nationals that the doctors involved were either silenced or, or put in isolation or that sort of thing so word of this virus could not get out,” O’Brien told a crowd at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.

“If we had those and been able to sequence the virus and had the cooperation necessary from the Chinese, had a WHO team been on the ground, had a CDC team which we’d offered been on the ground, I think we could’ve dramatically curtailed what happened both in China and what’s now happening across the world,” he continued.

O’Brien also urged Americans to heed the warnings of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention and take precautions to prevent further spread of coronavirus.

“If you’ve got a coworker who sneezes, send them home,” he said, adding that people should practice social distancing, wash their hands routinely, and take other protective measures.

O’Brien, whose speech notably drew a smaller-than-usual crowd amid fears of crowded places, described the President’s response to the outbreak in the US as “courageous,” particularly for his decision to temporarily freeze air travel to highly affected areas.

The coronavirus has currently spread to six continents, roiled financial and oil markets and have led to the cancellation of events, classes and other gatherings across the country.

CNN-Trump expected to lay out "path" out of coronavirus crisis tonight, source says

Trump is expected to explain that "the crisis isn't America's doing but America is taking the proper course," according to the source who was read in on some of the language in the address but cautioned that the remarks are still being tweaked.

The President's expected description of the crisis, the source said, is an indication that Trump will likely note that the virus was first detected in China. Trump made note of this during his meeting with banking executives earlier today.

The source said the White House is hoping Trump will come across as something of a "CEO" in the speech. But the source noted this is a critical moment for Trump.

"These TV moments define a presidency," the source said.

A White House official says Trump will outline his economic stimulus proposals and will look to put forward a message of "unity" in the face of this crisis.

The President is expected to address the nation at 9 p.m. ET.

London has 101 cases and 2 deaths and yet the authorities are doing nothing to limit contagion. Football matches with 60k audiences are still going ahead. Absolutely ridiculous. This time last week it had 25 cases.

by Anonymousreply 517March 12, 2020 12:17 AM

You people are reacting so slow. I live in Hong Kong. Schools and non-emergency public services were all shut down when we had about 10 confirmed cases. Lots of people have been working from home. Everyone has been wearing masks and using hand sanitizers since then. I can't believe countries like UK and US are not doing more to prevent it from spreading.

There are at least 1,237 cases of novel coronavirus in the United States, according to the state and local health agencies, governments and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the CDC, there are 70 cases from repatriated citizens. The US government is still clueless. Less talk and more action would be nice. Prepare temporary hospitals in high population density area to treat and quarantine people who are infected. Self-quarantine at home is not going to work once you hit a large number of infected. This virus moves fast especially when the US is only adopting minimal preventive measures. The situation's manageable until it isn't, and you have to prepare for that eventuality. I just hope the state and municipals level of government aren't as clueless.
