"Some thought that moderate living and the avoidance of all superfluity would preserve them from the epidemic....They shut themselves up in houses where there were no sick, eating the finest food and drinking the best wine very temperately, avoiding all excess, allowing no news or discussion of death and sickness, and passing the time in music and suchlike pleasures. Others thought just the opposite. They thought the sure cure for the plague was to drink and be merry, to go about singing and amusing themselves, satisfying every appetite they could, laughing and jesting at what happened." -- Giovanni Boccaccio

by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 6, 2020 8:03 PM |
I have had something for a week now. It's nasty pain in the joints and muscles, headache, and pressure behind the eyes. There is a tightness in the chest but I can breathe deeply. No cough. No fever. No runny nose. I was told in Switzerland one can call the cantonal health office and they come swab at home. I felt OK to work. I think my big STEM university will close within a week a or two. They sent an email today saying every professor must take home his/her computer everyday and verify that our VPN and campus network access works from home. This was sent at 4pm today, Friday. I heard a French minister from nearby French departments on the radio, coming home. He announced the closing of all schools below University. Just like that. I don't know which department it is.
I am guessing many students on my campus have this and nobody is being tested because they are 20 years old, in gorgeous health, and don't feel that sick. The French health minister said specifically the huge danger is so many young kids will have it, or have it, and are not sick at all, and will spread it to their parents and grandparents. He said the government is advising all French people NOT to visit their old relatives - to protect them.

Statistics for Italy from today's "Corriere Della Sera" (think Italy's NYTimes):
The average age of death for those who have died from the virus is 81 years old.
32.4% of deaths are of those aged 70 to 79.
8.4%: 60 to 69
2.8%: 50 to 59.
14.1% are over the age of 90.
All but 15% had preexisting health conditions (heart problems, diabetes etc.)
As of today, Italy has carried out over 36,300 tests for the virus.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 6, 2020 8:21 PM |
In other words. The French health minister is saying that the children will be speading this - not sick with this. That's why schools must close.
The French radio program than continued to discuss the global stupidity of concentrating production of so very many things, needed all over the world, in unique places. The example was given of pedals for cars. Apparently ALL pedals re made in China. So in a few short months, no cars can be finished in Europe as there will be no pedals. Stuff like that.
As an aside - this, above, has bugged me for almost 20 years, as I saw increasing amounts of mass market food (affordable food) being imported to Switzerland. You can still buy Swiss food in most varieties but you PAY. Consumers mostly don't care so ALL the strawberries come from Spain. etc etc etc.
Anyhow I drew the line in sand and said I'll never buy any food from China - and you do have to read labels - because it does sneak in.

We have similar protocols here as other countries. In fact they apparently closed evening walk in clinics, and you aren't supposed to go to your doctor's office either. Just call some central number and be evaluated to see if its worth sending someone to swab you.
I had symptoms like this last winter and was tested for everything and nothing was found, although the doc could feel the swollen glands. If this is wuflu - it's not a huge deal for me, as long as I don't start coughing. I hear its the lung issues that dangerous, even if people recover.

There was a sign at Winco on the mostly empty shelves where the wipes should be. The only ones they had left were a few of the house brand. It said, they would only sell four per family of wipes, hand sanitizers, gloves and masks. As far as I know Winco doesn’t sell masks. And they don’t seem to have any hand sanitizer.
I went to the Costco Business Center store this morning. They open at 7am. I got there around 8:00, to find that a single group of Asian people were carrying out five carts of bottled Kirkland (house brand) cases of water. That’s about 11- 12 cases of water per cart, and they bought five carts full. At the same time, several other individuals were going out with carts of nothing but water as well. Others were going out with flat carts of nothing but water. All the same, cheap house brand. I went to the back where the water was, out of curiosity. There was an empty pallet in the middle of the floor. Most of the individual water bottle packages were gone. You could tell they had sold out just from those people that left as I came in. The lines at the cash register were full of people with water-only carts The gallon bottles were still there. Several people were talking about it, sounding shocked, including the staffer that checks you out at the door.
Anybody know if there was something on Chinese media telling people to buy water, or maybe people’s relatives in China are telling them to buy water? Only Chinese people were doing it, which made it so striking. That’s a restaurant supply Costco, so a lot of Mexicans, Chinese and others with mom and pop restaurants go there to buy restaurant supplies.
I haven’t been for a couple of days, they’re out of some types of rice and mayocoba beans, which are used a lot by Mexicans. If you’re looking for storage containers, they have restaurant supply grade food containers and heavy plastic bins of various sizes that are good quality. Lots of gloves. No masks. Also cheap plain white refrigerators if you have room in your garage.
The main specialties of that store are cases of vending machine sized sodas, juices, Gatorade, Arizona Iced Tea and other drinks in cans and bottles, vending machine sized boxes of nuts, breakfast bars, candy and other snacks and baking and cooking supplies. They have a big produce section and refrigerated and frozen section, and a lot of restaurant supply equipment, like shelving, food grade containers, small appliances, trash bags and other cleaning supplies. They also have a small medical section with less selection than most Costcos, but they’re not cleaned out either.

Why people are buying so much toilet paper amid coronavirus outbreak
The mass buying spree has many wondering why people choose to stockpile the basic necessity, which has many alternatives, albeit not quite as comfortable.
In Australia, where authorities had stressed that there is no shortage, people have wiped store shelves clean, leading major grocery stores to impose strict limits on TP sales, according to Reuters.
Consumer psychology experts say the irrational herd mentality is fueled by social media and alarmist news coverage, according to the BBC.
Another explanation for the phenomenon is what’s known as the FOMO — fear of missing out — syndrome, Associate Professor Nitika Garg, a consumer behavior researcher at the University of New South Wales, told the news outlet.
“They think if this person is buying it, if my neighbor is buying, there’s got to be a reason and I need to get in too,” she said.
In China, Garg added, people sought to stock up on toilet paper because “there’s a thinking that toilet paper can be substituted for tissues and napkins and to make makeshift masks.”
Another consumer expert said the toilet paper craze also reflects people’s need to hang on to their modern lifestyle.
“I think people want to make sure they have some comforts in their lives if they’re going to be shacked up with their family for a long time,” he said.
“Toilet paper doesn’t really matter — it’s just so far down the survival list compared to other things like food or water — but it’s just something people cling to as a minimum standard,” Miller added.
Justin Wolfers, a professor of public policy and economics at the University of Michigan, said in a series of tweets that “even if you’re not freaked out about a pandemic, you worry that everyone else is & they’ll stockpile … & you don’t want to be the left paperless.”
“You can relax, knowing that you’ll still be able to wipe your bum.”

How the White House protects Trump and his staff from coronavirus
WASHINGTON — The White House is holding meetings on how to reduce the threat of coronavirus infecting President Trump and his staff after quietly tightening visitor rules last month, The Post has learned.
In response to the outbreak of COVID-19, the White House has mandated that guests disclose all countries visited in the past 30 days. And further steps are under review by a group led by Tony Ornato, White House deputy chief of staff for operations.
The group was described to The Post by one senior administration official as a “task force” that convenes when necessary to address emerging threat situations.
The biggest visible change in the West Wing has been installation of hand sanitizer stations. But the senior official said temperature checks and ending public tours are possible if the crisis worsens — though neither is imminent.
The Ornato-led group is “constantly monitoring and re-evaluating” White House protocols, the official said.
The review follows a significant security change to screen potentially infected visitors.
A different official said that on Feb. 21, the Secret Service began requiring non-pass-holding visitors to the White House complex to submit a list of countries visited in the past 30 days.
The Secret Service and the White House Medical Unit review the information and follow up with people who have visited countries with coronavirus outbreaks.

Broadway theaters tell sick patrons to stay home amid coronavirus fears
And producers are urging ticket-holders with cold or flu symptoms, or who are not feeling well, to stay home and contact their points of purchase about ticket exchanges.
A new statement released by the Broadway League – the trade group representing theater owners and producers – outlines additional measures being taken as cases of coronavirus continue to increase across the world. “We have significantly increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting in all public and backstage areas beyond the standard daily schedule, and we have added alcohol-based sanitizer dispensers for public use in the lobby of every theatre,” the statement reads in part (read the entire message below).
“We invite patrons to make use of soap, paper towels, and tissues available in all restrooms,” it continues. “We remain vigilant, and we are prepared to make decisions based on current recommendations, as well as in response to changing conditions.”
The League says it is “closely monitoring the evolving coronavirus situation” and will follow strategies recommended by public health authorities, elected officials and the CDC. “We remain vigilant, and we are prepared to make decisions based on current recommendations, as well as in response to changing conditions.”
“Anyone who is experiencing cold or flu symptoms, or who is not feeling well, is encouraged to stay home and contact the point of purchase for more information about ticket exchanges and policies,” the statement says.
The illness couldn’t have arrived at a worse time of the year for Broadway, with awards season in sight and the spring openings of major productions already underway. (“Girl From The North Country” opened last night, and much-anticipated shows including “Six,” “Company,” “Hangmen,” “Diana” and “The Lehman Trilogy,” to name just a sampling, are either in previews or about to be.)

A problem with stockpiling food is that I’m racing through the good stuff now! I suppose that’s a lesson. My place is small, so I don’t have a lot of options for that.

My very elderly immigrant parents, both quite disabled, are having a very hard time keeping up with and parsing the information about this on the news. So much of it is changing every day and confusing and contradictory and they just can't keep up and don't know what's going on. They're quite far from me and want to stay put (I offered to drive to them and drive them here), so I tried to give them the best information I could and have loaded them up with supplies via Instacart (I know there is still a risk with that, but it's better than them going to the store themselves and they need it either way). I had already sent them tons of hand sanitizer so now I advised them on disinfecting their phones and cane handles and doorknobs daily, washing their hands, not touching their faces or public door handles or shaking hands, etc. They've agreed to only leave their house if absolutely necessary for the next few weeks, but they're in a major city and I'm still worried.

The one silver lining, hopefully, is that people see Trump is a complete clown when it comes to a crisis that affects the entire country. There is always going to be the cult followers but for the moderate Republicans and moderates on the fence, maybe his farcical leadership during this pending crisis will be the final straw.
It's like Depeche Mode said, God's got a sick sense of humor. Killing us with a new virus and then to really pour salt onto the wound--we are supposed to rely on Orange Roughy for leadership and inspiration.

I have no problem blaming Trump for all of this but we were obviously unprepared. I think the states depend on the federal gov't. too much. R107 I'm not sure how bad that doctor's symptoms were when he was seeing patients, but I work for a major US hospital system and was told recently on a coronavirus leadership update call that staff who "just have a cough really can still come to work" as long as they're not running a fever. That is the mentality we're dealing with, even as of today.

I've self-quarantined and was contacted today and told a nurse will be coming by tomorrow morning to take a swab for the test, results should be no more than 24 hours. Still feel OK, really, like a mild cold, ibuprofen is plenty to ward off the fever and headache that come with it, the cough isn't bad enough to need something for it. I'll update as things develop.

Three Maryland patients contracted the coronavirus on a Nile River cruise in Egypt, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced in a news conference.
Two of the Maryland patients had public interaction. Hogan said that one individual, after returning from the cruise on February 20, attended an event in the Philadelphia area where they were in contact with a group of children. As a result, the Central Bucks Co. School District in the Philadelphia suburbs made the decision to close five local schools today.
Another patient attended a public event on February 29 at the Village at Rockville, a retirement community where they were in contact with approximately 70 to 100 individuals including outside visitors, as well as residents and staff, according to Hogan.

To the people who think only old people are at risk, or telling people to stay home is hysteria, CNN just had some expert on who was talking about the virus multiplying day by day. I think it came out to 66,000 in three weeks.
The main reason this is spreading as it is, is that when someone comes in contact with an unknown person and catches the virus, it can be weeks before they show any symptoms. The whole time they don’t feel sick and don’t know they’re sick, they are contagious, spreading the virus to coworkers, family and friends. Taking public transportation, eating in restaurants, going to bars, visiting their elderly parents and other high risk people.
Take an event like Coachella. It’s ground zero for unknowingly picking up the virus. Then people go home, have no idea where they got it from, and are contagious for weeks, spreading it everywhere to a lot of other people who have no idea where they got it from. Same with conventions or Comic Con type events. People fly in from all over. Then go home and carry it with them. That’s exactly how the 1918 flu spread, traveling to visit family for the holidays.
In cases like the cruise ships or somebody that catches it from a family member, they can track down every person they have visited, and quarantine them all. That’s the end of that thread, so to speak. But go to Coachella and potentially catch it from thousands of total strangers that could end up on the other end of the country, or anywhere? They need to cancel it.
The fear isn’t that some teenager at Coachella will get it. The fear is that everyone that goes to Coachella has parents, grandparents and bosses in their fifties and sixties, rides the subway, goes to bars...young people go out. They are perfect disease carriers because they interact with a lot of people. And then they go back to college and breathe on each other there... and then their roommate goes to visit Grandma?

I can't believe that there are any active cruises ongoing AT ALL after most have turned into full-fledged death traps. Why the blank are they till operating? Half of the initial set of cases brought into the US were from a cruise ship or ships. I guarantee you a large number of new cases her are from people returning from cruises.
Our president can sign Exec Orders with a flourish of a pen banning people from entering the country and just about everything else, time to put his uber-impulsive pushy nature to work for us and ban cruises from departing or porting here. No one coming off a cruise can return home here for a month, flat out.
Yes the industry will suffer but we bailed out the banks, give the cruise companies a bail out for next 6 months (airlines too as well). Our lives depend on it at this point.

Others say this is nonsense, such as the esteemed Dr. Agus, who says as long as you use enough of the final product you'll be fine. He said it's just like adding a shot of vodka to a glass of orange juice... either way you'll get just as drunk. So am I ok to dilute the 2/3 alcohol with 1/3 aloe as prescribed or should I only add a little aloe to keep it above 60%( which will make it runny and more drying/harsh)? Thanks for the help.

Calm down, Mary. Most cruise ships have not "turned into full-fledged death traps". Do you realize how many cruise ships are sailing at any given time? Princess alone has 18 ships, not to mention all of the other cruise companies. So far, there have only been three ships affected - the Diamond Princess, the Grand Princess, and the Westerdam. A cruise ship is probably the best place, relatively speaking, for an outbreak to occur because those people can be contained and prevented from spreading it to the general public. Far worse is someone spreading it in the wild, like on an airplane or a train or a large public gathering. I doubt you're screaming about closing down all airline travel or public transportation.

The same federal government that has failed catastrophically at every project it has undertaken for the last century? Only a fucking retarded moron would ever believe that the federal government is efficient or effective at creating anything other than chaos and tragedy.
If each state and county were allowed to set their own policies, the spread of the ongoing epidemic would be slowed dramatically. Large government systems, just like any bureaucracy, are crippled by legacy systems, and leaders that don’t want to lose funding, so they try to pretend to be relevant.
Instead of helping, the bullshit bureaucracy kills people.
Socialism is bureaucracy with an exponent. Because so many of our important systems, such as healthcare and education, are controlled by federal legislation+ regulation, and funded by socialist policies, they will not be prepared to adapt to an outbreak of this magnitude.
The fundamental inability for socialist systems to prepare for “fat tail events” will result in millions of unnecessary deaths.
With any luck, this pandemic will result in radical decentralization of power back to the local level.
Brussels needs to be neutered. Washington DC needs to be relegated to the same status as Puerto Rico. All federal powers need to be returned to the states.
Smaller organizations are more nimble and capable of dealing with novel threats. Large your credit systems like the United States and European Union are dinosaurs.

The unbelievably incompetent reaction by members of the European Union, the US, Mexico, Commonwealth countries, and Islamic nations, will undermine faith in the current bureaucracy we pretend is representative government.
Radical decentralization will be the end result, unless they are able to take control of this within the next few weeks.
The vast majority of people on the planet already understand that government lies are normal, and therefore don’t believe anything the government says, so the rapid “phase change” will crystallize that discontent.
Given the choice between total control by Washington DC, and local control by politicians they can keep a close eye on, people will overwhelmingly choose localized government systems that reduce transaction costs and amplify response capacity.
Massive centralized bureaucratic government systems have failed so catastrophically that new forms of decentralized government will flourish in the aftermath.

If the idiot-in-chief hadn't broken up the CDC unit that dealt specifically with pandemics, we wouldn't be in the current situation. Notice that the couple of cases of ebola that got here were carefully controlled. Now we can't even get health-care workers tested.
Again, the fault of the moron-in-chief who has left multiple vacancies and appointed unqualified flunkies to positions throughout the federal government.
It's not an accident that we've got an out-of-control epidemic happening with the moron-in-chief.
And Grover Norquist jr. can just stay off Interstates and buying anything that arrived via an Interstate and then back to us on the federal government issue. And, actually, while he's at it, he can get off the Internet, since it is also the result of a federal government program.

Coronavirus patients are told to recover at HOME: People who have just mild symptoms will not be hospitalised as at least 45 people with the virus are already treating themselves in self-isolation with daily phone calls from health officials
Coronavirus patients are no longer all being admitted to hospital, British health officials have confirmed.
Anyone confirmed to have the virus who is not seriously unwell or at risk of becoming more dangerously infected can recover at home.
At least 45 people out of the 116 confirmed in the UK have already been instructed to stay in their own houses and wait for their illness to blow over. Officials said it was 'perfectly reasonable' for people to recover at home because COVID-19 is a 'mild illness'.
While recovering, they will receive daily phone calls from health officials and will be given a special number to call if they start to feel ill and need medical help.
'Anybody who needs hospitalisation will be hospitalised in a specialist centre as needed.'

New Singapore research shows coronavirus lingers in rooms and toilets but disinfectants kill it
WASHINGTON (AFP) - New research from Singapore published on Wednesday (March 4) showed that patients with the coronavirus extensively contaminate their bedrooms and bathrooms, underscoring the need to routinely clean high-touch surfaces, basins and toilet bowls.
The virus was however killed by twice-a-day cleaning of surfaces and daily cleaning of floors with a commonly used disinfectant - suggesting that current decontamination measures are sufficient as long as people adhere to them.
The research letter was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and comes after cases in China where the pathogen spread extensively through hospitals, infecting dozens of healthcare workers and other patients.
Researchers at Singapore's National Centre for Infectious Diseases and DSO National Laboratories looked at the cases of three patients who were held in isolation rooms between late January and early February.
They collected samples from their rooms on five days over a two-week period.
The room of one patient was sampled before routine cleaning, while the rooms of the other two patients were sampled after disinfection measures.
The patient whose room was sampled before cleaning had the mildest symptoms of the three, only experiencing a cough. The other two had moderate symptoms: both had coughing and fever, one experienced shortness of breath and the other was coughing up mucus.
Despite this disparity, the patient whose room was sampled before cleaning contaminated 13 of 15 room sites tested, including a chair, the bed rail, a glass window, the floor, and light switches.
Three of the five toilet sites were also contaminated, including the sink, door handle and toilet bowl - more evidence that stool can be a route of transmission.
Air samples tested negative, but swabs taken from air exhaust outlets were positive - which suggests that virus-laden droplets may be carried by air flows and deposited on vents.
The two rooms that were tested after cleaning had no positive results.

South Korea has universal healthcare, that's a big reason why they have been able to test so many people.
I may be hesitant about testing since I have a $6,700 deductible before my health care coverage pays for anything. I can afford $6,700 in the big scheme of things so I'd probably get tested if I'm presenting clear symptoms. But how many Americans can swing that kind of cost? Many are living from paycheck to paycheck.

Comment from daily mail
1% of people posting here understand this. The figure of how many have died so far is not relevant. The mortality rate is. The current rate across the world is 3.8%. For perspective for all those that like to mention the flu. The mortality rate of the flu is 0.1%. COVID-19 is around 30 times more deadly and more infectious than flu. It is also mutating. When the deadly Spanish flu mutated during its second wave, healthy people aged 25-35 also died in high numbers. Convincing your "it's just a bad flu" is a cope method and self-denial. You don't have to panic but educate yourself and prepare for the reality of this.

The S strain seems to be mild in younger patients without underlying health problems, but the L strain seems to be more virulent and can still cause serious problems and death at any age. Either strain can kill the elderly or people with comorbidities. If I were a public health official, I'd err on the side of caution at this point. We know almost nothing about this virus.

A few people upthread seemed to be upset about the lack of information. Here is what I know. As I understand it, for practical purposes to the average person, the virus is different from the flu for these reasons:
1. You can be infected with the virus for weeks, and yet you show no symptoms. You are contagious during this period, so this makes the virus more communicable than the flu.
2. The virus is more resilient than the flu. Until about the first of the month, I was hearing that it could be transferred through the air, floating in air. I now uniformly hear that it is like the flu, and requires phlegm, spital, etc., for contagion, so I don’t know. The exception is below.
3. It can last for perhaps 9 hours on surfaces, and that can infect you. This also makes it more communicable than the flu.
4. There are reports of people recovering and testing negative, but later falling sick again. It’s possible the test was wrong or the virus was hiding somehow. So, it can either reinfect you, or you can have a relapse even after our crappy tests say you’re virus-free. They don’t know which it is right now.
5. There are two strains. We don’t yet know if both can infect you or not.
6. The death rate was reported to be 1-1/2% to 2% until about last Monday. Now they are saying 3%-4%, with the elderly at 5%-6% or more. We really don’t know yet.
7. Don’t compare the number of deaths to the number of flu deaths. This disease is just getting started.
8. There is a 1%-2% chance you will turn into a zombie. See the movie [italic]“The Omega Man” [/italic] from 1971 for details.

CNN-5,861 coronavirus tests completed by CDC and public health labs
As of Friday at 6 p.m. ET, 5,861 tests for coronavirus have been completed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health labs, US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn said at off-camera briefing at the White House on Saturday.
Trump administration health officials had not released specific figures until today.
This does not mean that 5,861 people have been tested. Currently each person tested typically has two swabs taken – one from the nose and one from the throat.
The 5,861 number also does not include tests performed at private or commercial labs.
Right now Hahn said there is an ability to perform 75,000 tests. Officials, however, expect that number to jump dramatically next week with the additional production by private manufacturers of coronavirus testing kits.

Congress preps plan to work from home amid coronavirus outbreak
The House Administration Committee will launch a center Monday to coordinate computers and phones into a telecommuting system, according to an internal memo obtained Friday by Fox News.
“In light of the unique and unusual circumstances presented by the coronavirus … this will provide the opportunity for staff to receive technical assistance they may need to be prepared to work remotely,” the memo reads.
Congressional staffers were spooked this week after learning dozens of their bosses may have been exposed to the fast-spreading illness at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference last week in Washington.
But the House and Senate remain open to visitors — and representatives and senators must vote in person, the Constitution mandates.

I can't imagine that morticians would be allowed, or even want to, handle the body of a corona victim. How could you possibly know that it was safe. Would individual funeral homes be equipped to deal with this?
by Anonymous | reply 367 | March 7, 2020 11:36 PM |
I think Trump is suppressing testing; and the experts, who have more integrity, probably think they are more valuable working on the virus in other ways than fruitlessly complaining about the lack of testing. They don’t want to be replaced by a second string employee or former congressman. But, I wouldn’t be surprised if eventually, one of the CDC employees falls on his sword and complains publically. There already was a whistleblower on this and it had no effect.

R366, my sister and her hypochondriac partner in Suffolk County on Long Island just had the A strain of the flu, despite getting the anti-virus Flu shot. She was tested and the A flu seems to be what she had, though I wonder.
So, there are other things that are going around. That said, yes I would be concerned, but not worried. Make sure you’ve got the supplies recommended previously, delivered perhaps, and limit your contact with people.

Oh, my God! We did this all in 1982 and 1983 and 1984 and after. We know the answers to all the funeral home questions. dead bodies are remarkably self-contained and funeral directors know how to handle them.
We cannot and MUST NOT fall victim to all this fear and suspicion. We are better than that. We have to be better than that because our goddamn motherfucking president isn't. This is a challenge but some of us have done this before. Educate yourselves. Think for yourselves. Demand action from officials.

I started following this closely at the end of January. The predictions were dire, and nothing in the last five weeks has changed my initial impression.
Apple is FUCKED. Over 90% of their products are produced inside China. Those supply chains are utterly broken, so no new iPhone or iPad will be released this September.
Numerous banks have sent people home to begin “remote work” protocols- 10% now, 50% by April 1.
Walmart is finalizing plans to convert all shopping to curbside delivery.
Even if they cured the virus tomorrow, the supply chain disruptions will still cause major problems this year.
If the number of cases keeps doubling every six days, healthcare systems worldwide will be in meltdown mode by the end of May.
Anyone who doesn’t believe that this is going to dramatically disrupt daily life for everyone on the planet is deluded.

Also worth noting that a single healthcare provider possibly exposed 200 people between the two hospitals they work for.

R434, I think so. Although Trump now takes credit for bringing the Princess ship’s Americans home to quarantine from Japanese waters, it’s reported that he was furious when he found out it happened without his knowledge. It was done through a Congressman’s initiative. At present, he’s refusing to let Americans on another cruse ship in San Francisco harbor to disembark, because that would increase the number of sick in the US, and he said he “likes the numbers the way they are”, the stupid, sick bastard.

A week ago the US had around 70 recorded cases. Today there are 428. Italy had its first case two weeks ago. Now there are nearly 6,000. This is unfolding all over the world.
If this is not alarming to you, you are either in serious denial or not that bright, or both. The US is not going to be able to magically contain this. Not even South Korea can. It will continue to double every few days. Hospitals will fill up. And if you think you're safe because you're young and otherwise healthy, you're wrong. Eventually the healthcare system will be in shambles and the care you'll receive won't be anywhere close to what you've enjoyed up until now.

Roughly 5,861 coronavirus tests completed by CDC and public health labs
As of Friday at 6 p.m. ET, roughly 5,861 tests for coronavirus have been completed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health labs, US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr.

It is the worst outbreak outside of China.
Six more deaths were reported on Saturday, with 50 in total

First coronavirus case confirmed in Washington, DC
A man in his 50s who lives in Washington, D.C., tested positive for COVID-19 Saturday, Mayor Muriel Bowser said.
The patient began exhibiting symptoms in late February and was hospitalized locally on March 5, she said.
The case is considered to be the result of community spread because the man did not appear to have a history of international travel or any close contact with another confirmed case.
“With his test yielding a presumptive positive, D.C. Health has started its investigation in keeping with CDC guidelines,” Bowser said. “This investigation includes contact tracing and providing guidance on next steps for care.”
Organizers said the patient tested positive Saturday and was exposed to the virus before attending the event and had no interaction with the president or VP, the Times reported
Trump brushed off any concerns as the virus crept closer to the White House.
“I’m not concerned at all,” the president said Saturday.
When asked, Trump said he’d press on with rallies as the number of infected Americans continues to rise, with more than 400 cases documented by Saturday night.

From Liz Specht, PhD, Associate Director of Science & Technology at The Good Food Institute:
I think most people aren’t aware of the risk of systemic healthcare failure due to #COVID19 because they simply haven’t run the numbers yet. Let’s talk math. Let’s conservatively assume that there are 2,000 current cases in the US today, March 6th. This is about 8x the number of confirmed (lab-diagnosed) cases. We know there is substantial under-Dx due to lack of test kits; I’ll address implications later of under-/over-estimate.
We can expect that we’ll continue to see a doubling of cases every 6 days (this is a typical doubling time across several epidemiological studies). Here I mean *actual* cases. Confirmed cases may appear to rise faster in the short term due to new test kit rollouts.
We’re looking at about 1M US cases by the end of April, 2M by ~May 5, 4M by ~May 11, and so on. Exponentials are hard to grasp, but this is how they go.
As the healthcare system begins to saturate under this case load, it will become increasingly hard to detect, track, and contain new transmission chains. In absence of extreme interventions, this likely won’t slow significantly until hitting >>1% of susceptible population.
What does a case load of this size mean for healthcare system? We’ll examine just two factors — hospital beds and masks — among many, many other things that will be impacted.
This is just the beginning. Her full compiled Twitter thread at link.

Random thoughts . . . am binging "Containment"/Netflix; awful writing, but atmospherics/fx/hypothetical is eerily prescient of where we are right now; it's spooky that it's from 2015. On an early episode of "The Walking Dead" Rick opined that EVERYONE had the virus, that not everyone manifested it/it needs a trigger . . .
It's really amazing how small our world can contract to; I'm very grateful for all of the numerous trips/work/school we enjoyed abroad, I'm just not sure of when we can travel next . . . I'm also thankful that we have stocked supplies and should be OK in that regard, but I think the whole thing is larger than any of us have an idea, and that ultra-massive changes are/will happen.
Good luck everyone!

R455 Read up on the Spanish Flu. It didn't just 'come' and then disappear. It came in 3 waves. Firstly a mild one that barely killed anybody, then a second very deadly one towards the end of WW1 and then another deadly wave. 40 to 100 million perished.
I do hope as you hope that this will just go away...but like in the next month.

Italy is using the cops and the military to enforce the lockdown. That’s martial law, right?
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte signed a decree early Sunday, which will put most of northern Italy under lockdown due to novel coronavirus.
The entire Lombardy region is included as well as 14 other provinces.
CNN is verifying exactly when the lockdown will go into effect.
Draft text:
The text of the draft proposal – sent to CNN by the press office of the Lombardy regional authority – says that people in Lombardy and other 11 provinces should "absolutely avoid any movement into and out (of) ... as well as within the same territories ... except for travel motivated by unavoidable working needs or situations of emergency."
The draft says the police, the fire brigade and armed forces could be used to enforce these measures.

My God you are stupid. Do you understand anything about epidemiology or exponents?
R474
It is taken me almost a month to begin to accept that the future is going to be radically different in the short term, and might be incredibly, almost inconceivably, different in the next few years.
People must not be taught the “one penny doubled every day for 30 days” thought experiment for understanding exponential growth.
After 30 days you will have 2^30 -1 pennies. 2^30 = 1,073,741,824, so after 30 days you would have 1,073,741,824 -1 or 1,073,741,823 pennies, over $10M.
Conservative estimates show a doubling every six days. Some countries have seen doubling every 12 hours.
Split the difference, and that means most of the planet is infected by the end of May.
Anyone not taking this seriously, especially considering the uncontrolled spread inside the United States at the moment, is a textbook definition of an idiot.
If the fatality rate is 3% without intensive care, and hospitals are totally overwhelmed, big cities will burn.

The woman, 36, had been treated for mild symptoms at an Omaha hospital until Friday. Then her infection took a turn for the worse, officials told Omaha.com.
She was transported for more specialized treatment to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, also in Omaha — secured inside what’s known as an “isolation pod” and handled only by “moon-suit” medical workers.
The woman is currently being treated for acute respiratory distress syndrome at UNMC’s Biocontainment Unit.
The world-renowned, 10-bed unit is designed to safely treat deadly infectious diseases while protecting its highly trained staff and the public from contamination.
The unit has only one other patient — a coronavirus patient from the Diamond Princess cruise line, officials said.
The infected woman admitted this week had traveled with her father to England, where she began experiencing symptoms.
She returned from the nine-day trip on Feb. 27 and went to the emergency room at Omaha’s Methodist Hospital on Thursday.
Epidemiologists are now scrambling to trace with whom she may have come in contact, including basketball players at an area Special Olympics tourney, patrons at an Omaha VFW, and more than 30 health care workers at her first hospital.

Manhattan hardware store hit with fine for coronavirus price hikes
The Garment District hardware store that sells Purell hand sanitizer for nearly $80 a bottle was slapped with a city fine Saturday — because they’re now allegedly jacking up the price of face masks.
Investigators from the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection visited the store a day after The Post revealed the store’s astronomical prices in the wake of the coronavirus epidemic.
But a worker insisted the shop is not gouging — and won’t drop prices.
“We’re gouging according to them,” the defiant general manager at Scheman & Grant Hardware at Eighth Avenue and 38th Street said.
The store, an Ace Hardware franchises, is selling 1200-milliliter bottles of Purell for $79.99.
Ace Hardware offers the same product online for $9.99, though it’s sold out.
“We have ZERO tolerance for anyone taking advantage of an epidemic to gouge prices,” Mayor de Blasio posted Saturday night, alongside a re-tweet of The Post’s story.
“Violations have already been issued to businesses and there will be consequences if this continues.”
The store’s outrageous pricing even caught the eye of Gov. Cuomo in Albany.
“We have reports of stores selling hand sanitizer for $80 a bottle,” he said during a coronavirus-update press conference in Albany Saturday, referencing The Post’s exclusive.
He warned that the State Police will be investigating price gouging reports and yanking licenses when warranted. “You will be caught,” he said.
Scheman & Grant Hardware was also offering jumbo-sized, 2-liter bottles of Purell for $109, but sold out on Friday.

Two Gentlemen of Corona.
The problem with trying to minimize information about the spread of disease by only testing people at death's door is that you wind up with an inflated lethality rate. The US rate will come down as the number tested goes up.
South Korea has adequate testing and good health care and I think the death rate is .8% there. That;'s good news.

On the bus last Tuesday the guy right behind me was coughing for 6 hours and I really hope he only had the flu. He was not wearing a face mask and sneezing and coughing for hours and probably infected the whole bus if he had the coronavirus. I guess I won't find out for another week or two if I'm infected or not. I wish I lived in SK and could just get a test at the drive thru and know for sure and not infect other people while I wait. Here it is impossible to get tested without any symptoms.
I hope if I'm infected it will be early on, since there are still enough hospital beds available. Everyone else is probably fucked if this situation explodes.

France is on red alert for an epidemic, as the number of coronavirus cases soared dramatically again to 949 cases, 16 deaths–from 613 infections and 9 deaths Friday.
The country is gearing up to declare a full-blown epidemic. Both Macron and health minister Oliver Véran declared that “inevitable” on Friday. “Currently at level 2 in the strategy to fight the coronavirus, France is "inexorably" advancing towards the epidemic stage after a new leap in contamination,” reports newspaper La Croix. 100-year-old Chinese man recovers from coronavirus, the oldest patient to beat illness
A 100-year-old Chinese man has fully recovered from the coronavirus, making him the oldest known patient to pull through the deadly illness, state media reported.
The centenarian patient, who marked his milestone birthday last month, was discharged Saturday from a hospital in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported.
He was admitted to Hubei’s Maternity and Child Health Care hospital on Feb. 24 with the coronavirus infection, the report said.
The man suffered from underlying health issues such as Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension and heart failure, the outlet said.
He was treated using antiviral medication, convalescent plasma therapy and traditional Chinese medicine, according to the report. The elderly man was then cleared along with more than 80 other patients Saturday to leave the hospital.
China has reported more than 80,000 cases and at least 3,000 deaths, mostly in the Hubei province.
(but i wonder if he's gonna die 4 days later after discharge like that 36 yr old man...)

I totally lost it yesterday at a diner here in NYC. A guy sitting next to me was coughing into his fist. I asked him to please cough into his elbow. He asked “Why?” I replied “Because when you cough into your fist you’re less likely to pass on any virus.” He said “I don’t have it.” That was the trigger. I said “Did you crawl out from under a rock? You could be infected and not show any symptoms for weeks. PAY ATTENTION!” A woman got up and said “You’re scaring my children.” I yellef at her “I DON’T CARE! THIS IS AN EPIDEMIC! PAY ATTENTION!” At least I didn’t curse. The selfishness and stupidity of New Yorkers is really going to be a challenge in the months ahead.

Oops, of course I said “You’re MORE likely to pass on a virus when you cough into your fist.”

Thanks, R531 - I'm going to be sure to stock up on sanitizer and alcohol in 2029!
Unless we start seeing significant cases of respiratory failure in younger healthier people by the end of the month, the short-term attention span of the public will turn on this.

Ben Carson said on This Week that healthy people should absolutely go to a crowded Trump rally.
George Stephanopoulos was aghast.

There are plenty of cases now of those who had Covid and recovered, then became reinfected - one died from reinfection in China.
There is no clear evidence that you are immune from the virus after getting it and recovering.
by Anonymous | reply 577 | March 8, 2020 5:19 PM |
R577, there is so far no evidence of cross-strain immunity either.

I voted for "Panic at the Costco", because none of the others sounded very good. But we've already had "Pandemic! At the Disco", so it feels like a repeat. But if we end up using it, there needs to be an exclamation point after "Panic", i.e. "Panic! At the Costco".

I LOVE Panic!at the Costco.
Fuck these racially tinged Asian titles.

I would like to know where you people live that can't find rubbing alcohol, peroxide, TP and so forth. Once again I was at Walmart and didn't see anyone stocking up on any of the products I mentioned. As a matter of fact there is plenty of those products available. Do I need to start sending care packages?

Trump's not alone! The British govt are also fuckwits.
The Foreign Office is facing a backlash over its lack of clear advice for British people with holidays booked in northern Italy and those currently in areas locked down as result its escalating coronavirus crisis. The department is still advising it is safe to travel to anywhere in Italy, apart from 10 towns where the outbreak originated, meaning flights are still scheduled to depart to Milan and others areas in Lombardy where 16 million Italians are in mandatory quarantine.
