Generally (on soaps) the actors have two types of reactions, the usual which is waving the pride flag and saying how happy they are to play the character and the second which is generally the insecure/homophobe/closet case (and in some cases a combination of the three) that consists in mentioning his girlfriend at every sentence (even if they are not questioned about their private life at all).

But Chandler's reaction was some kind of unique, there are different possible reasons, religious upbringing, not agreeing with the change of his character (that could be understable, even his clearly sexual chemistry with the actor who played Chad was probably the reason that Will end being gay) and of course being a closet case (it was a rumour that his manager was quite controlling).

All the actors who played gay characters on DOOL were way more comfortable than him doing it (even some of them were bashed by the fans). Unlike what happened with Luke and Noah on ATWT, the truth is the gay storyline never brought ratings to the show (probably because it was incredibly bad written) so they were vulnerable.

Soaps are a dying genre, unlike telenovelas that were able to evolve, women stop being just victims or the evil, and they brought strong female characters, gays stop being just for laughs or non existent, and started to have their own storylines, but soaps are still the same they were 30 years ago
