I love his feisty on-court attitude too. Competitive but not a jerk

kudos to 18 year old Brandon Nakashima. In Dallas challenger he defeated Ryan Harrison yesterday and today Bernard Tomic both in straight sets
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 4, 2020 10:24 PM |
Extra kudos to Nakashima for getting rid of two bad attitudes.
Congrats to FAA today too in a nice comeback after Dumzhur took the first set. Let's hope this bodes well for the rest of the season.

What a revolting person Margaret Court is.
[quote]"I’d never go to another nation, whatever I thought of a person, I would never say, ‘Hey, you should take their name off a building, or off an arena, or a tennis centre’. I would never do that,” Court said. “I think that was very, very wrong."
she says about Navratilova and McEnroe's attempt to get the MC arena renamed. She didn't, though, think it was a problem to say that she thought South Africa was handling its racial issues well under apartheid.
What an evil piece of work she is.

Pella called Moutet impolite after their match. It's not the first time their matches are heated.
Moutet reminds me of Cantona, outside court he seems a nice guy who loves poetry, but on court he is rude.
Moutet won their match 67 75 63

Fed Cup:
Sara Sorribes def Naomi Osaka 60 63.
Naomi ended in tears after being defeated very clearly. Sorribes used the slice and variety and the japanese made a lot of unforced errors.
Right now is pretty clear that Osaka is not the same without Bajin
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 7, 2020 11:41 AM |
She should be ashamed of herself
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 7, 2020 1:36 PM |
Novak's dad said it was unbelievable that the australian crowd didn't cheer for Nole in the final.
I know with all the Federer hysteria but crowds used to root for the underdog
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 7, 2020 6:21 PM |
But that particular underdog is called Novak Djokovic, r46. Only die-hard Serbian nationalists would root for him. He’s one of the most unpleasant players I’ve ever watched, and I’ve been watching since the end of Laver’s reign.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 7, 2020 6:30 PM |
Osaka's worst surface is clay though. She certainly shouldn't have lost to that player and by that score but Naomi seems to be a hard court specialist actually then grass then clay
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 7, 2020 6:30 PM |
R47: In this case he was clearly the favourite so it's easy to understand they root for Thiem.
R48: That doesn't explain how she lose against someone as Sorribes (I recognize she played very smart today) winning only three games. Unless she changes a lot her chances against CSN are not very high either
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 7, 2020 6:35 PM |
To R47's point, my tennis GJOATs since 1970, ATP round of 16:

Rusedski
A. Zverev
Fognini

Pospisil accepted the SE in Rotterdam and was drawn against Journeyman Medvedev in the first round.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 8, 2020 8:33 AM |
Except, r50/r51, every one of those you list at least owned their arseholery. Djokovic adds an extra layer of obscene pandering to his nastiness. You want to rant at ball kids? Fine. You want to get pissed at an umpire because they told you you’d gone over time on your serve? Great. But then stop it with the boobs shit, and do NOT use someone else’s death to score pity points from the public.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 8, 2020 8:33 AM |
R50 how can you not include Roddick on your list? He was such an entitled jerk at times

by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 8, 2020 9:57 AM |
Osaka didn't play her match against CSN. Spain is going to win way easier than expected (well, before Osaka debacle, Spain seemed the clear underdog playing without Muguruza)
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 8, 2020 10:13 AM |
R55/R56, I tended to focus on Roddick's more redeeming qualities. But he at least deserves a dishonorable mention.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | February 8, 2020 10:18 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 8, 2020 2:24 PM |
R54, I see Djokovic as a contradictory, and somewhat self-destructive person. It it fully possible for him to do, and mean, all of the things that you describe. Indeed, of all of the people who spoke about Bryant at the AO, Djokovic seemed to be the only one who had been friends with him.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 8, 2020 3:47 PM |
The Djokovic hate here is ridiculous. He had an interview talking about Kobe Bryant being his friend and mentor the day BEFORE he died. And some here think he is using him to score pity points. If anyone is doing that it's Nick Kyrgios.

Outside the court Djokovic is perfectly likeable and way more interesting than Roger and Rafa, his problem is his on court behaviour. He used to withdraw when he was losing when he was young, he still throws raquets when things are not going his way, his temper tamtrums are epic, and so on. And the fact that he clearly wants to be liked doesn't help either

R199—a literal translation of a La Semana newspaper article from July 2009:
[quote]Gabriela has her reason to say goodbye so soon. Her life has been complicated on a personal level. She discovered that the media was publishing intimate secrets that her entourage didn't like and she couldn't control the situation. The solution was "bye, bye to tennis". Gabriela has quit the sport and fame to live a quiet life with her friend, a physiotherapist of the WTA. With her retirement Gaby claims to have the right of privacy. No more paparazzis following her every step. No more inventions from the Argentine press to simulate something that is not true. No more boyfriends that don't exist. Not anymore.
Cum grano salis, but interesting nonetheless.

So far Kim is struggling on serve. She looks big but not as big as she has in the practice photos, and she's still a pretty strong ballstriker. Muguruza isn't exactly in her Melbourne form though.
Gaby was one of the better looking players in her day, but there are a few knockouts since her time. Alize Lim isn't exactly slam winning material but she's still probably the most beautiful.

by Anonymous | reply 213 | February 17, 2020 5:56 PM |
I saw part of an interview Clijsters did for BBC this past weekend. Obviously she still has that competitive fire but 1 of the biggest reasons why she decided to return is that she spoke to the WTA CEO about the rules and they're convenient for her. As a former slam champ/#1, she has an unlimited amount of WCs available for her. She can also pick and choose to play whenever and wherever she wants. She doesn't have to play a certain number of events so it won't interfere with her mothering duties.
Given her tournament choices during her first comeback I expect her to heavily focus on North American hardcourts, some big events internationally and grass. She feels she gets hurt on clay so I wouldn't be surprised if she just played 1 tuneup then RG or even skipping it completely.
Clijsters mentioned that she was impressed and inspired by Halep's Wimbledon win over Serena. I bet Clijsters is dreaming of that title herself. I mean don't forget the year before Kerber won it.

I only saw about ten minutes of the Clijsters–Muguruza match, and it was mainly KimC committing really atrocious double faults. I didn’t think she would eventually push Muguruza to a second-set tiebreak. Losing that breaker 8–6 implies that she was that close to taking the number 9 seed to a third set. That is truly jaw-dropping stuff.

I want Serena to at least tie Court. Court is so despicable. Even if half her slam titles weren't really top tier level competition, Court gets to brag she's the best (though the rest of us know better). Serena equaling that and even passing would put the nail in that witch's claim.
Unfortunately Serena has gotten so nervy since her comeback though. If she doesn't do it this year it's hard to see her doing it at all.

oh another thing I remember from the Clijsters interview:
3 of the younger top players she named as ones she most wants to play are Halep, Andreescu and Osaka. She didn't play Halep before and obviously the other 2 were too young last time she was on tour.
today of course was also her first time playing Muguruza
and there's a pic from when Kenin was very young posing with Clijsters

Winning junior GS means absolutely nothing. Peliwo won three and he never was top 100.
The truth is Carlos always did way better with the pros than with juniors. There are a lot of very talented players born in 2003.
But i don't think Damm will be better than him. Martin is the typical american with a big serve and a big forehand, but i can't see nothing special in him. Mochizuki on the other hand is a very talented player, but he'll need time to develop his game because he is not tall. I like Rune a lot.
Alcaraz has an advantage anyway, his attitude on court is very good, he never surrenders. Maybe that's the reason his results on the pro tour are way better than anyone of his age

Seyboth Wild was the US Open junior champion a couple of years ago. It's curious that only Felix made it till now. Kuhn was supposed to be big too, but he is having a lot of trouble. When he plays well he is superior to most of his rivals on the challenger level but he seems to struggle a lot with his confidence. Molleker was injured last year and he seems not fully recovered yet
Fokina is very talented but he is a Kyrgios/Bublik type of player, he seems to think too much of making hot shots when he should think on winning the match. I read people comparing the totally opposite attitude on court in comparission with Alcaraz. I doubt Fokina will be in the top 100 by Roland Garros. He had a very good opportunity in Rio but he wastesd it

Fokina is top 100 now, but he defends the Estoril semifinals and in the year he only won one match. And he lost a good bunch of matches against lower ranked players.
Unless something changes he won't be top 100 by the time of Roland Garros (and he is not good at qualifications on GS)

2 questions for all the experts on tennis:
1) why is it that the typical male american player ALWAYS ALWAYS has the big serve, the big forehand and NOTHING else? guess it all started with toddick, but one could go back even further to the likes of jimmy arias! i guess agassi was the only exception...
2) why aren't their ANY indoor carpet tournaments anymore on the men's or women's tour? why? the surface would be so so much easier on the player's body.. to play indoors and yet hardcourts seems like a oxymoron...

R252: The truth is it was the opposite, carpet is not good on the body. And of course there's a tendency to make the courts slower, it seems most tennis fans are not fond of ace after ace after ace.
And even there's a lot of exceptions, it's true that the typical american players is exactly that, big serve and big forehand, and little more. On the juniors side, Martin Damm fits that mold, but i don't think Toby Kodat is exactly that way (and he has a one hand backhand).
I watched Sinner's match, and the way still makes a lot of unforced error but he makes winners without any effort, once he adjust his game he is going to be terrific

It could be argued the stereotypical American player comes from the college system. No other country has that. Players are taught to just have one weapon and that'll get them the scholarship. I can't think of another country with such a system that produces such one-dimensional players who are so aggressively boring.

I saw the second set of Muguruza vs. Clijsters. There were several points which were higher quality than the AO final. i still can't believe Kenin is a slam champ but Muguruza may have been a bit injured there.

R257.. soft carpet is HARDER on the player's body then hard courts? i.e. concrete, asphalt, etcetera.? granted the soft carpet is laid down over a hard surface but still one would think it's easier on the player's bodies as well as it being played indoors and not under the hot sun.....
the carpet surface COULD be slowed down or made faster depending just like other courts as well.

R263: The number of injuries on carpet season was high, i think it was one of the reasons they decided not play in carpet anymore

Margaret at R268, you were very skilled on carpet too back in the day, weren't you?
When you and BJ bumped uglies did Rosie, Martina and Wendy get jealous? Did you and Wendy ever play doubles, if you know what I mean?

When will Pampers Shriver make a comeback and win a singles Grand Slam? She still would be a major contender at the French Open if she played this year.

There's a gorgeous line judge in Marseille in the Bedene - Hemsworth match. So much eye candy in a single match!
by Anonymous | reply 271 | February 18, 2020 9:29 PM |
anyone ever notice how most of the male and female players have gorgeous men in their entourage/team?
anyone ever notice that when they scan the crowd, their is ALWAYS a few gorgeous men in the stands?
getting back to why there is no carpet tournaments indoors anymore, if their were alot of injuries why? was the carpet "sticky" or "slippery" or "too soft" or what?.. personally i never heard or read of alot of injuries on the men's or women's indoor circuits back in the 70's and 80's..

I don't know if it's the pressure but FAA don't give future goat vibes at all. He seems to be suffering all the time on court. He has the talent, but i don't know if he has all the rest needed to be a champion
by Anonymous | reply 280 | February 19, 2020 6:39 PM |
FAA is already in the top 20 rankings and has been a finalist at tournaments. He just needs to get over the hurdle of winning a title and then I think he'll relax. Most players his age can only dream of getting into the top 100 and winning matches on the pro tour level
It took Federer a while to get into his groove.
Wawrinka wasn't even a contender for important titles until his late 20s
by Anonymous | reply 281 | February 19, 2020 7:12 PM |
True, but he is not Wawrinka. He is supposed to be the next big thing and i just can't see it. Stan always was a player who can do the best and the worst, nobody expected him to win a GS but he found some stability with maturity
Nobody deny Felix is a good player and he'll be better, but i don't think he'll be the dominant player in a near future
by Anonymous | reply 282 | February 19, 2020 7:35 PM |
Keep in mind that Felix is still only 19. How many other players had achieved as much (top 20 within a couple of weeks of his 19th birthday, 4 ATP finals at level 250 or higher, semifinalist at an ATP 1000, semifinalist at another ATP 500, 4 Challenger titles, qualified for a Challenger at 14) at Felix's age without eventually making it into the top ATP echelon (say top 5)?
I predict top 10 in 2020 for Felix, and top 5 next year.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | February 19, 2020 10:06 PM |
speaking of wawrinka, is there anything more thrilling to see on a tennis court when he turns into stanimal and is unbeatable?!...unfortunately he's the "male mandlikova" (minus the surly attitude).. can beat anyone anywhere anytime when he's on and is unbeatable but yet can almost lose to anyone too....
he IS already though hall of fame worthy.. 3 grand slams, olympic doubles gold medal and switzerland davis cup champion..
by Anonymous | reply 284 | February 19, 2020 11:13 PM |
R282, FAA will probably be the perfect opposite of Wawrinka: a classically handsome man with a consistent, rational style of play. No wild, feral craziness for him.
by Anonymous | reply 285 | February 19, 2020 11:28 PM |
R282.. i would hardly call FAA a "consistent style of play" player right now... in fact, most of the time he loses it's because of his OWN unforced errors and double faults at key moments of a match. i will say FAA is a a good looking young man and in about 5 to 10 years from now when he has become a fully grown man with some much needed heft and muscle to him he'll be sexy as hell! would love to see him and others in that time span bring back the super short shorts to tennis! lol!..
wawrinka isn't classically handsome but he's a good looking guy with great eyes despite his pock marked face and of course he has one of the best asses and best abs in all of tennis..
by Anonymous | reply 286 | February 19, 2020 11:57 PM |
Nonetheless Felix is becoming more consistent and less prone to mental lapses, as evidenced by his win today over Travaglia despite being down two match points.
Felix is also unlikely ever to point to his head in smirking self-professed genius.

He’s three times hall of fame worth!
by Anonymous | reply 289 | February 20, 2020 2:11 AM |
R287... stan's famous "pointing to the head" has never been considered by ANYONE as "look how great i am, i'm a genius" mentality! it's a symbol to his coach and listening to his coach that he should use his head to win matches, it's the same as giving a thumbs up to his coach, nothing more...
FAA is still young, will see how and what he turns out to be on court...

Sock's ass has doubled in size. So has his gut. He looks like he should be in his basement playing video games and drinking a 6-pack.

impressive 2 wins by 18 year old Brandon Nakashima this week in Delray. he straight setted Vesely Monday and today Norrie
by Anonymous | reply 296 | February 20, 2020 3:22 AM |
FAA is certainly very good for his age, but a lot of posters here get over excited about him because of his twinky looks (we already have a slew of jealous posts saying that it's the girlfriend's fault he's losing matches,, even though these posters are probably 4x his age and he would never go for them). He will obviously get better, but he's an absolute mess under pressure in most matches and his serve deserts him on important points way too often.
Even when he made that Miami SF he only beat two top 20 players, slumping Coric and Basilashvili who hit himself off the court. His great breakthrough tournaments on clay were against VERY depleted fields, and when he made the Stuttgart final it was off the back of a walkover from Raonic and a huge choke from MP up by Dustin Brown.
Until he made the final in Rotterdam this week he was 8 wins to 13 losses since WIMBLEDON (some of those wins coming against scrubs like #423 Pervolarakis). Those are awful numbers for anyone, no matter what age. Today he barely survived Stefano Travaglia, 28 year old Italian journeyman with a CHR of #74.
I'm not saying he won't be a great player, but give him time. He has to defend a lot of points coming up and will likely have a drop in the rankings, which might take the pressure off a bit I hope.

I have to admit, if there's no Fed or Rafa? I tend to not watch. Nole is great, but he's irritating. No new players have sparked an interest for me. And I was a kid during the Pete and Andre days. So I am fine with new blood.
by Anonymous | reply 299 | February 20, 2020 10:26 AM |
"Over excited", R297? FAA has stats that warrant excitement to alleviate the deathly boredom from watching the same three men dominate the sport over the last decade and a half. Granted, Nadal, Federer and Djokovic are all worthy of their many accolades, but I'm tired of seeing their old bags of tricks over and over, no matter how technically sound and strategically brilliant.
FAA will likely reach two or three more finals before the US Open, surpassing all but Nadal and Djokovic for most finals reached before age 20. He has several other equally impressive records already. On the flip side, there's his absymal GS record, in part due to his injuries (hoping that he doesn't go the way of Del Potro), and his not infrequent losses to lower-ranked players.
However, it's not his "twinky looks" that set him apart, and your remark about anyone looking at him as a personal prospect is laughable (as if). What distinguishes him is that he carries a professional tennis demeanor in the tradition of Laver and Ashe, and he is similarly intelligent, cultured, and self-deprecating while still maintaining a quiet sense of humor. That's very different from many of the tennis brats around his age. Fortunately the likes of Medvedev, Kyrgios, and Zverev are being increasingly overshadowed by FAA, de Minaur, Sinner, Ruud, Humbert and Kecmanovic. Let's hope the trend continues.
