I can't bear to watch Trump's lawyers lie. They lie with such incredible ease. So fucking certain. Cheney was like that. I watched it until the third resolution was tabled. How can Roberts sit there. He had to have read the brief the House provided every Senator with a copy, and the Chief Justice had to have received one too. Anyone who watched the House hearings had to know.

And the thugs are losing.
When 70% of the country wants witnesses and the thugs won't even consider it, that's not going to help them when election day rolls around. Endless commercials showing the rethug bullshit will start playing starting around labor day.

by Anonymous | reply 101 | January 22, 2020 7:44 AM |
R100 it's not just for Trump. It's also for the Fox "News" hosts and their idiotic brainless brainwashed viewers
R101 you would think that's case and I hope it is but don't forget the last big Senate disaster-the Kavanaugh confirmation. The polls showed more than 50% of the public did not think he should have been confirmed to the Supreme Court. The public was also outraged that McConnell and the repub-led Judiciary Committee led a sham confirmation hearing with only 1 accuser allowed to testify. Ultimately every single repub except for Murkowski voted in favor of confirming him (she voted "present") and even fucking Manchin joined them. This was right before the midterm elections and the ended up gaining an additional seat. That emboldens them to keep acting against what the public wants. Just like McConnell took a gamble in refusing to hold confirmation hearings for Garland and lesser federal judge nominees Obama had chosen. He thinks he's invincible at this point.
Will Americans FINALLY hold them accountable and flip the fucking Senate back come this November? who the hell knows. It SHOULD happen but a lot of the public is so damn dumb and/or apathetic
by Anonymous | reply 102 | January 22, 2020 8:31 AM |
R33 - thanks for that link. As always, Senator Kamala Harris is SPOT ON. I adore her and thank God we have her in the Senate. That said, IMO the major reason that Trumpy's lawyers are spouting all those lies is to give Fox News their talking points = Hannity and Ingrham need their lies to be repeated, backed up and re-spewed to let their "viewers"/cult members feel even more secure that Fox News theories/blatant lies are actually "facts". This gives them something to bitch to their kids and grandkids about and start unnecessary fights during holidays. Sad that they are so out of touch and afraid to use the internet to actually...hmmm....FACT CHECK for once? I know that this is new and scary concept for these cognitively-limited cult members.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | January 22, 2020 8:32 AM |
Guys, in reality we all know that Trumpy will never be removed from office. The numbers are not there - not when the GOP is such a brainless cult. We just need voters who were apathetic and sat home in 2016 to get to the polls this time around. The more dirt that is publicly exposed and the more disgusted the public becomes when watching these lying, cheating, repulsive GOP thugs and their blatant, entitled, tyrannical behavior - the better. They are all accomplices to Trumpy and his gang of thugs in the executive branch - every last one of them.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | January 22, 2020 8:44 AM |
well we've come to learn that the repub party is in sync with Fox "News" and they coordinate messaging directly with Trump's goons. For people who lean conservative, hearing the same things coming from the politicians and tv hosts reaffirms ideas and has led to an alternate reality.
The base has been convinced that the impeachment is "a liberal partisan sham." This therefore justifies the repubs like assholes in their minds. They have been convinced the Democrats are lying and scheming to bring down Trump on unimpeachable charges and that Biden is really the corrupt one so no matter how dirty and stubborn repubs get, it's all justified.
I wish there was some way to dismantle and expose Fox "News." Why can't a reporter get in touch with Michael Cohen and get all the facts out about his dealings with Hannity, his other client? Surely it couldn't have been a normal lawyer'client transaction

From FUX:
In the hastily called press event before Trump was to return to Washington, the president delivered an unsparing assessment of impeachment proceedings, which moved into full swing a day earlier and will resume later Wednesday with opening arguments.
While making clear he's reluctant to approve any new witnesses to testify, he floated -- perhaps playfully -- the idea of personally attending the trial, if only to antagonize the Democrats.
“I’d love to go, wouldn’t that be great?” he said when asked whether he would attend. “Sit right in the front row and stare at their corrupt faces, and I’d love to do it.”
The president joked that the press should not keep talking about his possible attendance or “you may convince me to do it.”
But Trump went on to slam the House impeachment managers—specifically House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., who is serving as the lead manager, and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.
“First of all, Jerrold Nadler, I’ve known him a long time, he’s a sleazebag. Everybody knows that,” the president said, adding that Schiff acts like he’s “so aggrieved.”
“I watched the lies from Adam Schiff,” he continued. “He’s a liar and he’s a fraud.”
“These are major sleazebags,” Trump said. “It’s a total hoax. It’s a disgrace. They talked about their tremendous case and it’s all done.”
He added: “They had no case….It’s a con-job.”

Politico: Trump casts resisting impeachment as 'one of the greatest things I've done for our country'
During a news conference in Davos before returning to Washington, a reporter asked Trump whether he would consider delaying his State of the Union address to Congress next month in light of the Senate proceedings. The president said he would not, but quickly turned uncharacteristically reflective, proceeding to recount a recent conversation he had shared with Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward.
"He said, 'You're enjoying this, aren't you?' I said, 'No, I'm not enjoying it.' He said, 'No, you act like you're winning and you won. You're actually enjoying it.' I said, 'I'm not enjoying it. I'm doing it because it's very important what I'm doing,'" Trump told the assembled media, before criticizing former FBI officials including Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, Andrew McCabe and James Comey.
"I consider what I've done here with this whole witch-hunt from day one — with the insurance policy, with the horrible statements made between Strzok and Page and McCabe and Comey, who lied to Congress and did so many other bad things. He lied and he leaked," Trump said. "When I finish, I think that this is going to go down as one of the greatest things I've done for our country. These are bad, corrupt people. These are bad people, and very bad for our country."

That Bolton knows what he has said about foreign leaders and it may cause problems and make his job harder. And that Bolton didn't leave on the good terms and it wouldn't be good for him for someone who left on bad terms to testify.

Hill: Trump downplays seriousness of injuries in Iran attack after US soldiers treated for concussions
"I heard that they had headaches and a couple of other things, but I would say and I can report that it's not very serious," Trump told reporters at a press conference in Davos, Switzerland.
"I don't consider them very serious injuries relative to other injuries that I've seen," he continued. "I've seen what Iran has done with their roadside bombs to our troops... I've seen people that were horribly, horribly injured in that area, in that war.
"No, I do not consider that to be bad injuries, no," he added, referring to the soldiers who were taken for treatment last week.

He appeared to break with Republicans efforts to block Democratic motions to immediately call witnesses and subpoena documents. R202 concur. Mueller has impressive qualifications. But when he testified, he looked tired, burned-out really. I believe his age was a big factor. His hearing seem compromised, and one could tell his cognitive processing was off. Still, he had a big team working for him. He obviously felt constrained by the parameters placed on him. He believed it was up to Congress to do it's job, and he followed the DOJ policy of not prosecuting a sitting President.

The trial is still going on as we speak, though it appears that the TV networks are not covering it. Suuure, Jan at r222. What Mueller evidenced was the demeanor of a self-aware fraud, a man who knew from minute one that he was never, regardless of facts and findings, going to recommend the criminal pursuit of Trump. He put an extra-legal MEMO above duty and patriotism.
Mueller's cowardly acceptance of those faux-restrictions in the face of a treasonous President was not the only evidence of his Party Before Country stance.
No. The most egregious example of his lapdog nature was Mueller's tortuous syntax "explaining" how Trump was "not exculpated." But was he GUILTY of anything?

A) how the mainstream media covers this. Fox is always spewing the same nonsense "Democrats are losing. Democrats are lying. This is a sham. Nothing impeachable." The mainstream media needs to continuously point out that no, Democrats are not lying. The repubs are lying
B) how much of the public in swing states care. As other posters have noted, there are so many stupid people in this country and others who are just apathetic about politics and feel "Democrats and repubs are the same!" which is dumb. AP: Democrats face risks and limits in Trump's impeachment trial
Democrats were once reluctant to take on impeachment during an election year but are marching toward a decision by the Senate that the American public also will judge.
“We're trying this case to two juries — the Senate and the American people,” Schiff acknowledged Wednesday ahead of opening arguments. “The American people are watching. The American people are listening. And they do have an open mind.”
*
Campaigning in Iowa, Biden stood by the effort to remove Trump from office.
“People ask the question, ‘Isn’t the president going to be stronger and harder to beat if he survives this?’ Yes, probably. But Congress has no choice,” he said. Senators must cast their votes and "live with that in history.”
*
On the first day of opening arguments, Schiff appealed to senators not to be “cynical” about politics, but to draw on the intent of the nation’s Founding Fathers in providing the remedy of impeachment and removal. He spoke directly to Republicans to join them in voting to oust Trump from office to “protect our democracy.”
Holding the room proved difficult. Most senators sat at their desks throughout, as the rules stipulate, though some stretched their legs, standing behind the desks or against the back wall of the chamber, passing the time. Sometimes they outwardly yawned. Republicans quietly smirked at the presentation from Schiff and the lesser-known House Democrats prosecuting the case.

Senators can view classified testimony from Pence aide
*
When they’re not stuck in their seats at the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, senators will have the chance to review classified testimony from an assistant to Vice President Mike Pence that Democrats have unsuccessfully tried to make public.
After Senate Republicans rejected an attempt Tuesday to allow the Senate to receive classified information into evidence, Chief Justice John Roberts late Wednesday announced an agreement to allow classified information into the record. Senators will have to review it in a secure setting.
The information is part of a description of Pence’s Sept. 18 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky given to the committee by Jennifer Williams, a foreign policy adviser to Pence.
Democrats argue the testimony is corroborating evidence and there’s no reason it should be classified.
Pence's office previously refused Democrats’ request to declassifying the information, saying in a Dec. 11 letter that it would serve no purpose.
“This call was classified when it occurred,” Pence spokeswoman Katie Waldman tweeted Wednesday night. “House Democrats knew the call was classified when they allowed and asked Jennifer Williams to discuss a classified call in an unclassified setting. They are now trying to cover their tracks.”
Pence had previously said he had no problem with the White House releasing transcripts of his conversations with Zelensky.

Trump attacks Democrats in morning tweet storm
Back at the White House after an overseas trip, President Donald Trump didn't waste much time before attacking Democratic prosecutors at the Senate impeachment trial.
"The Democrats are trying hard to damage Republicans prior to the Election!" Trump said during an early morning tweet storm aimed at opponents who have accused him of abuse of power.
Trump also cited pundits who attacked the process, including conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, and singled out Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the lead House impeachment manager, as "Shifty Schiff."
The president, who spent the past two days at an international economic conference in Davos, Switzerland, has no public events on his schedule Thursday.
After a series of private meetings the White House, Trump leaves at mid-day for a trip to Miami; he is scheduled to give a closed-door speech to the Republican National Committee, which is holding its winter meeting at the Trump National Doral golf resort.

President Donald Trump lashed out at Democrats ahead of the trial's start on Wednesday. Speaking from Davos, Switzerland, where he had made an appearance at a global economic conference, Trump said the two top Democrats involved in impeachment were "sleazebags."
He also accused them of an incomplete House investigation.
"We have all the material. They don't have all the material," Trump said during a news conference.
Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., responded on Twitter, saying the president's remarks about not providing all the evidence amounted to a taunt that confirmed why the House charged him with obstruction of Congress.
"This morning the President not only confessed to it, he bragged about it," she tweeted.

Democrats don't have to defend the Bidens even if something there is not pristine concerning Burisma. The Bidens are not witnesses or defendants. Don't take the bullseye off Trump. And don't give Republicans an opening on the Biden deflection which they intend to yap for hours when it is their turn.

Morning Joe just replayed Schiff’s powerful conclusion from yesterday in full. One more day to drive the point home. They’re never going to get Blackburn or Paul, but there are may be enough reasonable Republicans listening who will vote for more witnesses and documents. From there, as Trump irrationally responds, there is a chance that he could still be removed. At least he has been seriously dishonored by this process.

The most disturbing aspect of all this, R352, is how he has bent the narrative to allow his stupidity and venality to be largely unremarkable. At this point, he gets away with saying or doing just about anything because he’s said so many outrageous and inane things that anything new is met with a collective shrug of the shoulders. As the Senate barrels toward a make-or-break moment on witnesses next week, Trump allies and members of leadership are warning that calling Bolton, or any current or former administration officials, to testify could draw out the impeachment fight for weeks, if not months.

Politico: Pro-Trump groups have a new impeachment enemy: Republicans
*
For Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, conservative groups decided that ad buys attacking Democrats weren’t enough — they wanted Republicans to hear from the president’s supporters in person.
Their message: Acquit Trump now. Don’t call witnesses.
“I just feel it’s wasted so much of our time,” said Lisa Woods, 55, a Trump supporter and mother of five who came over 400 miles from Medina, Ohio, this week via the conservative group FreedomWorks.
Woods, who was bused in with roughly 60 other activists, came to pressure the few moderate Republican and Democratic senators who can ensure the trial ends swiftly by rejecting proposals to allow testimony. “I think he’s done a lot of good things that the public doesn’t know because they’re always talking about impeachment,” she said of Trump, adding that she wasn’t all that familiar with the Ukraine saga that led to impeachment.

Republican senators received a violently metaphorical threat before the impeachment vote. Then I went to Barnes and Noble, where I bought my copy, and got a server error message when I tried to access the "Very Stable Genius" page. I just tried it again and it's still down.
I'd give it three out of five. It's nothing that anyone who's been following reputable news sources wouldn't already know but it's a decent primer for how the stage was set for the impeachment, with Trump acting like a classic narcissistic manager faking his way through a job he's entirely unqualified for, taking all the credit while using, destroying and abandoning a series of masochistic enablers.

The Republicans determined to acquit him a foregone conclusion, are really screwing up. By denying witnesses and evidence, documents to be entered into the proceedings, they will forever have this unresolved. Blocking, stonewalling, obstructing one or two pieces of evidence is one thing. But this universal policy of completely denying access is going to backfire HUGELY. When you have more than 60% of Americans saying they want witnesses, and this is denied, it will carry all the way to election day.If you have evidence and witnesses who will exonerate you, then why block them?
by Anonymous | reply 376 | January 24, 2020 2:54 PM |

First, let me point out that a grand total of sixty people attended this rally for fat Donnie? Well, there were THOUSANDS of Marchers on the mall this past weekend. Marchers who were mostly pissed off suburban moms. You know, that demographic that rethugs can't afford to lose?
Second - sounds to me like fat Donnie is starting to turn on his enablers. That's going to be his undoing. Let them shiv each other while we sit back and laugh.
Third - these fools seem to have forgotten the ass kicking we gave them in 2018 after they tried to take away the ACA. Paul Ryan laughed and thought he was safe. Like the pathetic coward he is, he quit. Then WE kicked them in the cunts and put Pelosi in charge.
Lastly, more people are watching this than these fools think. They figure they have the fux noise demographic locked down but people are seeing this everywhere. You can't run from it. Schiff is everywhere. The YouTube channels are bogged down with people watching.
We know the Senate won't remove him. Be ready for the backlash but fat Donnie can't touch Schiff, Jeffries, Pelosi or Demmings or anyone else. So chill.
This isn't over. It's one battle and #teamschiff has bloodied the hell out of this fool. They may come out with their precious traitor but they are weakened and bloodied and Pelosi still has plenty of knives left.

From FUX:
Trump becomes first president to speak at March for Life: 'Every life brings love'
*
The president, who for years was pro-choice, has since embraced a pro-life position and made clear Friday he plans to continue that agenda as he seeks re-election. Underscoring Trump's stance, his administration hours earlier moved to challenge California over a rule that mandates insurance plans cover elective abortion.
"It is my profound honor to be the first president in history to attend the March for Life," Trump told the crowd in Washington. "Unborn children have never had a stronger defender in the White House. ... Every life brings love into this world. Every child brings joy to a family. Every person is worth protecting."
The president also panned Democrats' stances on abortion as "extreme" and went out of his way to thank the "tens of thousands of high school and college students who took long bus rides to be here in our nation's capital."
"When it comes to abortion, Democrats … have embraced the most radical and extreme positions taken and seen in this country for years and decades and you could even say for centuries," Trump said, accusing many of supporting "taxpayer-funded abortion all the way up until the moment of birth."
"Once again, President Trump’s administration is delivering on his promise to protect human life and all Americans’ freedom of conscience," HHS Secretary Alex Azar said. "Under President Trump, HHS has been vigorously enforcing the statutes Congress passed to protect Americans’ consciences and institutionalizing these protections within the department’s civil rights work."
Trump also touted his judicial appointments at the March for Life rally. The president's largely conservative appointments to federal courts have led many to believe Roe v. Wade -- the landmark Supreme Court decision that prohibited states from banning the procedure at certain points during pregnancy -- may be in danger of falling if a challenge to it reaches the Supreme Court.
"We have confirmed 187 federal judges who apply the Constitution as written, including two phenomenal Supreme Court justices," Trump said to loud applause.
Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen also appeared at the March for Life via video. They were in Rome representing the United States, and Pence mentioned that he thanked Pope Francis at the Vatican for the work of American Catholics in the pro-life movement.
"I couldn't be more proud to be the Vice President to the most pro-life president in United States history," Pence said. "Life is winning in American again."
The March for Life's timing is significant as it takes place near the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The actual anniversary of the ruling was earlier this week.

Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade asked the former New York City mayor if Giuliani's investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter in Ukraine hurt Trump.
"I would say the way I approached it is for the benefit of the American people," Giuliani told Fox News. "When the Vice President of the United States corrupts the president of another country, that is about as horrendous a crime as you can find."
Giuliani accused both the FBI and DOJ of being corrupt, when Kilmeade suggested there is an apparatus in place to investigate accusations like those made against the Bidens. "The apparatus to look at this refused to look at it," he said. "The witnesses will tell you they tried to get this information to us for a year."

R396, It not only is NOT nuts; it's CLEAR that Trump was ordering a lethal hit, without the subtlety of Henry II.
As President, Trump himself could have simply called Amb. Yovanovitch and said, "You're fired!" He's said it before.
He demanded, "Take her out! I don't care!" to Parnas and Fruman ("I don't know them"), known thugs.
Parnas provided evidence of the Ambassador's being followed and tracked electronically.
Yovavovitch had just attended the funeral of a young woman also fighting Ukrainian governmental corruption, murdered by thrown acid.
She in the ensuing wee hours got a phone call to leave for the U.S. ASAP. Next plane. The caller referenced turmoil in the White House, per Yovanovitch's testimony as to the meaning of "down the street."
Trump said, re: Y.: "She's going to go through some things."
Kushner is highly implicated in the murder of Khashoggi, and he would never act without Trump's imprimatur.
Barr is highly suspected of having Epstein murdered. Trump was a known friend of JE (former employee of Barr's father), convicted pedophile.
IOW, Trump's background, milieu, and disposition as well as current context and deductive logic, all lend themselves to the educated assessment that Trump wanted anti-corruption crusader Yovavovitch---a woman worthless to him because not a sexual object; an obstacle to his extortion plot to smear Joe Biden while denying military aid and moneys to Ukraine, thus pleasing his owner and master Putin---
assassinated.

Yes, the POTUS has the power to simply recall an Ambassador, and fire them. So IMO Yanacovich knew stuff, bad shit that could expose people. Don't forget this Ukraine bullshit goes back to Manafort and corrupt oligarchs before the 2016 campaign.
Look at the Ambassador's history and her previous postings. She has been in some dangerous places. When Trump said, "She's going to go through some stuff." and other menacing comments and then, "Take her out..." this needs to be looked in to.
The Russians are known for throwing acid, poisoning people, falls off balconies, and "jumping" out of windows, and then of course the people who just get gunned down, shot at point blank range while walking across a bridge.
When the Ambassador said she felt threatened, and she gets a 1AM phone call that she has to leave immediately for her personal safety, and Embassy security spirit her out of the country in the middle of the night, and cowardly Pompeo neither defends or attempts to protect her?
This is some bad shit. I hope Manafort, Trump, Barr, Jared, etc. all reap what they have sown.

by Anonymous | reply 549 | January 25, 2020 4:29 PM |
There should be a thread:
Describe the Deplorable in your life.
by Anonymous | reply 550 | January 25, 2020 4:30 PM |
It would sound like everyone was just describing the same person.
by Anonymous | reply 551 | January 25, 2020 4:30 PM |
Sadly it'd also sound like people could be describing some BernBros.

Claire McCaskill on Republicans upset by Schiff citing that CBS report: "Come on, guys. Listen, for anybody in the Republican Party to complain about overreach with President Trump in the White House, really? It just doesn't—as we say in the Ozarks, that dog doesn't hunt."
by Anonymous | reply 553 | January 25, 2020 4:36 PM |
Here is Trump’s entire defense strategy: Lie, smear, look over there, Biden, Burisma, Obama, Hillary, repeat.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | January 25, 2020 4:37 PM |
Trump’s defense team is so bad, it’s like he actually WANTS to be removed.

The impeachment trial boils down to one thing.
Are you going to believe the witnesses who testified, or the ones that won't?

by Anonymous | reply 557 | January 25, 2020 4:39 PM |
Oh God that photo at R557 is so fucking sad because it's so fucking true.

R557 truer words.

I think that after Nixon the Republican Party resolved to never let another Republican president get taken out no matter what. So they built up this political machine that enforced total party discipline. The idea that Trump is this unprecedented crook is not really true--he's just more open about his bentness. Reagan and Bush Sr. really should have been impeached for Iran-Contra, and the Democrats did their best to at least document and expose their blatant crimes. George W. Bush committed gross violations of domestic and international law and Cheney was totally on the grift, but the Republicans not only kept a firewall around them but Democrats played along with their post-9/11 "this is war and anything goes" mentality. So what the Republicans are doing right now to protect Trump at all costs is not at all unprecedented, just a continuation of nearly half a century of deliberate policy.

SethAbramson: The simple explanation for why today's presentation was so short is something I alluded to yesterday, which is that this is a rigged trial and Trump's lawyers already know they're going to win. Why should they talk and talk, when each word they say could help cost them a victory?
by Anonymous | reply 562 | January 25, 2020 4:43 PM |
^And each word a case for disbarment.

Wouldn’t it be great to hear what Chief Justice Roberts thinks of these arguments? Do you think hw would automatically just acquit Trump?
by Anonymous | reply 565 | January 25, 2020 4:48 PM |
Going to have to start the new thread a little early so if someone can link to it towards the end of this one, it would be great, thanks.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | January 25, 2020 4:50 PM |
Does anyone really have any faith in Chief Roberts?
by Anonymous | reply 567 | January 25, 2020 4:50 PM |
Nope.
by Anonymous | reply 568 | January 25, 2020 4:50 PM |
I cant wait for the new thread because I can't fucking stand that Paula Abdul song and it gets stuck in my head every single time I click in here.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | January 25, 2020 4:51 PM |
But thanks, OP!

Schiff’s out there saying, “They got nothin!” He sounds like he’s making a rebuttal argument in court, but it’s a press conference. Guess he didn’t want to just leave their accusations unanswered all weekend.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | January 25, 2020 4:56 PM |
Seth Abramson: I mean, I know they're coming back Monday, but they had EIGHT HOURS allotted for their defense today, and we just got 150 MINUTES. There's no way around that fact.
by Anonymous | reply 574 | January 25, 2020 4:57 PM |
Thanks for the new thread, OP!

by Anonymous | reply 577 | January 25, 2020 4:59 PM |
And I love Adam for doing everything that he does.

I haven't seen any recent polls.

by Anonymous | reply 580 | January 25, 2020 5:00 PM |
Schiff’s colleagues look totally grim standing behind him. Are they jealous?
by Anonymous | reply 582 | January 25, 2020 5:02 PM |
I was wondering where America stands on acquittal now.
by Anonymous | reply 583 | January 25, 2020 5:02 PM |
Poll Troll is too busy with all the DLers lining up to give him a BJ. I hope OP of these threads has a line too!
by Anonymous | reply 584 | January 25, 2020 5:03 PM |
They should be jealous that Schiff has bigger balls than all of them.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | January 25, 2020 5:03 PM |
Schiff is everything.
by Anonymous | reply 586 | January 25, 2020 5:04 PM |
