Take a look at the list of recent coming-outs on websites like GayTimes or Pride.com. As in every year, there are more men than women. In addition, almost none of the women come out as lesbians, while almost all the men come out as gay. These women are all straight girls who want to look glam, nothing else; today as in all human history, true homosexuality is found among men.

Anyone who takes a look at gay history, from the Iron Age to today, will realize that there are far more men in it; in fact, there were places and periods when, among men, homosexuality and bisexuality were more normal than exclusive heterosexuality was: For example, Greece from the post-Homeric to the Hellenistic period; Rome until the fourth century AD; Japan until the 19th century; China at various times in history, especially in the late Ming dynasty and throughout the Qing; the Muslim world until shortly after World War II. OTOH, there's never been a period in history when lesbianism and bisexuality were more than a statistical and moral abnormality among women. For understandable reasons, this disparity has planted a feeling of insecurity among lesbians, which they're trying to redress now, by pushing lesbian representation to an extreme level. Hence these children's animation series, like She Ra and Steven Universe, in which an unrealistic number of female characters (and only female characters) are presented as queer. Lesbians are lucky that straight people are less resistant to appeasing them than us, despite the fact that their claims are far bigger than ours.

In addition, there are also feminist impulses behind their complaints: "Why is it that male sexuality can exist without women, but feminine sexuality cannot exist without men?" You can even see posts inspired by these impulses in this thread, for example r289 and r290.

Sometimes, all these impulses, combined together, give rise to a feeling of competitiveness in relation to gay men, a belief that the relationship between gay vs. lesbian representation is a zero-sum game. A few years ago, a lesbian went viral on Twitter when she complained to Netflix that "all" its LGBT catalog focused on gay men. We even discussed her post on here - and unsurprisingly, not much sympathy was found for her. But can you imagine a gay man making such a complaint? Outside of Datalounge, you cannot.

And, btw, why was Pete Buttigieg the target of such a strong backlash from media lesbians? Because they resented that the first serious LGBT candidate for the US presidency was a man; they always believed it was going be a lesbian, because they know, in their hearts, that things in the USA are easier for them than for us.

Anyway, the presence of vocal lesbians in certain types of media does not mean much. Women on Twitter are far more likely to tweet using the #ActuallyAutistic hashtag, but in the real world, those who are diagnosed with this disease are almost always men. It's just that men are less likely to want to draw attention to themselves with this kind of thing; we don't use labels, whether mental diagnosis or sexual identity labels, as replacement for a personality.

I don’t think you understood my post, R301. The original series of posts was because someone claimed lesbianism was rare. Lesbianism per se is fairly rare (not as rare as some of the posts here think it is), but women having relationships with women at some point in their life is much more common (and again not as rare as some posts think it is, a number of women I know who consider themselves straight, not even bi, have been with women at some point).

I mentioned being a gold star because actual lesbians (as opposed to bisexual, curious or fluid) who don’t have relationships with men do actually exist, whatever DL thinks. I know this because I am one.
