When I was in college an international student found dead with his pants down in one of the large empty fields. I knew the guy, he was one of this boisterous friends with everyone types. There must have been an investigation but the story was quickly forgotten. The other thing is I seemed the only one truly puzzled by it. A perfectly healthy guy went and died in a thicket with his pants down and nobody seemed to dwell on it very much. His parents flew his corpse home and nobody ever mentioned it again. Strange

by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 18, 2019 4:05 AM |
R25 Wrong. All most people do at Cornell is study all the time. I went there. I know several people who go there now. It's a very intense place. Clearly, some people drink, but it's not a party school at all. This case is still being investigated. The parents are desperate for information, offering a reward. I don't think anyone can assume it was just an accident. So tragic.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 18, 2019 4:23 AM |
R32, if the university is as intense as you've explained, I don't think the school curtailing partying and social events is the way to go. Kids will find a way to drink and party despite restrictions anyway. I know I did.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 18, 2019 5:02 AM |
The truth of the matter is that Cornell has had a suicide problem where the gorges are concerned for decades. The parents are looking for someone to blame, but maybe deflecting the real problem. Suicide is the number two cause of death of students on college campuses. What’s interesting is the school spent millions of dollars to net off the gorges to prevent suicide, so either intentionally or accidentally something had to really go wrong for him to have died that way.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 18, 2019 5:10 AM |
Here is a story about the netting setup at Cornell over the gorges. Ironically, the former head of suicide prevention at Cornell committed suicide by jumping out the window of a building in Philadelphia this past September.

Serious question from someone who grew up in Florida... if gorges aren't wide or deep, why NOT just bulldoze a hill & use it to fill in the gorges? Or widen & dam one gorge, turn it into a reservoir-like lake, and use the excavated rock & dirt to fill in the OTHER gorges? Is Florida really the only place where we casually terraform terrain wholesale to make it how we want it to be, instead of settling for however it is?

The gorges at Cornell are wide and deep. You can't fill them in. Fall Creek Gorge (about 200 ft.), which separates north campus, is presumably the ones people were jumping into. The fencing they put up is on the bridges; I'm not sure there are fences all along the gorge, which runs almost a mile (though not all of that is on campus). When I was there kids would fall in after drinking at fraternity parties; I remember one incident where a kid was running away from police who were there to suppress underage drinking; it was dark, there were no barriers, and in he went.

R41 I can't tell if you're joking with your suggestion that the stunning natural beauty of Ithaca should be destroyed and turned into what? A Disneyland-like faux park such as Orlando? Such ignorance is precisely why so much of America looks bland, fake, and unappealing. Don't forget to plant lots of grass to drain a limited water supply with endless watering. I just hope you're not a city planner. Bulldozing the gorges would also not prevent accidents or suicide or murder from happening in any number of other ways.

R60 showed that there is a lake and stream in the gorge.
I’m reminded of the “smiley face killer” who is believed to have killed a number of young men in the Boston area, but also around the country. The young men typically have wandered off from their friends, inexplicably, and are found, days later, near or in a body of water, such as Boston Harbour. A “smiley face” graffiti has been found in the area of the bodies, hence the nickname. It’s been a large number of deaths.
I suspect their drinks are spiked with a strong drug that makes them discombobulated and suggestible.

R34, to be fair what do you expect to be the number 1 or 2 cause of death on a college campus if not suicide? Heart disease? COPD? End-stage-kidney disease? Stage IV cancer?
When people in their late teens and twenties die it's because of: auto accident, overdose, suicide (not necessarily in that order).

I started the original thread on this incident. Also I went to Cornell. It's not easy to fall into a gorge. Jump, yeah, that can be done. If it's a suicide. But as a 1st semester freshman, he wouldn't have built up any angst about grades and failure, yet, so it's not a typical timing/scenario for a Cornell suicide.
Sad. Just a waste.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | November 19, 2019 12:21 AM |
R68 I was interjecting that no one was mentioning that it might have been suicide, despite the fact that the death scene matched the situation of numerous suicides on campus and that the data of possible suicide highly supports that likelihood over murder or accident. No one seems to be looking at the obvious, displaced, outcasted, gay freshman in over his head commits suicide, if he was trans the numbers increases even more for suicide attempt.

r59, in my defense, I've never (knowingly) seen a 'gorge' in my life. I googled 'gorge', and saw photos that looked like big overgrown drainage ditches. Hence, my impression that gorges are just inconvenient blights on the landscape that get in the way and cause problems (like people falling in) & should just be filled in.
R57's pic certainly does change that impression.
R59, you have to remember... for the most part, for most of the year, "the outdoors" in Florida are completely miserable. There's a good reason why Florida had statistically no population prior to air conditioning & the start of large-scale terraforming in the early 1900s... it was basically uninhabitable. We don't value natural environments, precisely because OUR raw, natural environment is so awful.

R99, you won't fall to your death if you're IN the gorge. Try Taughannock in the summer when you can walk up the dry riverbed to the falls—I've seen bald eagles there. And of course you'll have to go the Ornithology Lab's Sapsucker Woods, particularly during migration. I'd also recommend Stewart Park (the end of Cayuga Lake) for ducks and geese when it's not frozen.

by Anonymous | reply 104 | November 20, 2019 2:19 AM |
If his body was found in the Botanical Gardens then his death had nothing to do with a gorge. They run alongside Beebe Lake, and there's a slope, but I don't recall any place you could actually fall in to your death—unless maybe he fell and hit his head on something.

Okay, I don't know where the report that he was found in the Botanical Garden on campus came from but the campus paper reported that he was found in the gorge "near Ithaca Falls" after he was last seen at a Phi Kappa Psi party. The Phi Kappa Psi house is not next to the gorge, it's down Stewart Avenue a ways, and Ithaca Falls is a few blocks downstream from that bridge.
