Adjacent Twink from Cornell University found dead at bottom of gorge

He last attended a frat party and the cause of death remains a mystery.

That's gotta suck — to raise and pay for a kid who gets into an Ivy League college but is enough of a dummy to get drunk and take a header into a gorge at the earliest opportunity.

When I was in college an international student found dead with his pants down in one of the large empty fields. I knew the guy, he was one of this boisterous friends with everyone types. There must have been an investigation but the story was quickly forgotten. The other thing is I seemed the only one truly puzzled by it. A perfectly healthy guy went and died in a thicket with his pants down and nobody seemed to dwell on it very much. His parents flew his corpse home and nobody ever mentioned it again. Strange

[Quote]to raise and pay for a kid who gets into an Ivy League college

Bragging about going to an Ivy League college if that college is Cornell, is like bragging about moving to New York if you are living on Staten Island.

Sure it's technically true, but...

by Anonymousreply 12November 18, 2019 2:55 AM

R10 I'm sure those are the least of his concerns now, Rose.

by Anonymousreply 13November 18, 2019 2:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 16November 18, 2019 2:58 AM

Yep r14.

I doubt this was anything nefarious. He got really drunk, was stumbling around and ended up falling in.

Way too straightforward an explanation for DL.

One of the biggest problems with going to a university in the middle of nowhere is all people do is drink.

by Anonymousreply 30November 18, 2019 4:01 AM

I've read that there are so many Cornell student suicides at the gorge they have had to put up some sort of cabling. Apparently it happens a lot.

by Anonymousreply 31November 18, 2019 4:05 AM

R25 Wrong. All most people do at Cornell is study all the time. I went there. I know several people who go there now. It's a very intense place. Clearly, some people drink, but it's not a party school at all. This case is still being investigated. The parents are desperate for information, offering a reward. I don't think anyone can assume it was just an accident. So tragic.

by Anonymousreply 32November 18, 2019 4:23 AM

R32, if the university is as intense as you've explained, I don't think the school curtailing partying and social events is the way to go. Kids will find a way to drink and party despite restrictions anyway. I know I did.

by Anonymousreply 33November 18, 2019 5:02 AM

The truth of the matter is that Cornell has had a suicide problem where the gorges are concerned for decades. The parents are looking for someone to blame, but maybe deflecting the real problem. Suicide is the number two cause of death of students on college campuses. What’s interesting is the school spent millions of dollars to net off the gorges to prevent suicide, so either intentionally or accidentally something had to really go wrong for him to have died that way.

by Anonymousreply 34November 18, 2019 5:10 AM

Here is a story about the netting setup at Cornell over the gorges. Ironically, the former head of suicide prevention at Cornell committed suicide by jumping out the window of a building in Philadelphia this past September.

by Anonymousreply 39November 18, 2019 6:33 AM

Hello gorges! Goodbye cruel world!

by Anonymousreply 40November 18, 2019 6:55 AM

Serious question from someone who grew up in Florida... if gorges aren't wide or deep, why NOT just bulldoze a hill & use it to fill in the gorges? Or widen & dam one gorge, turn it into a reservoir-like lake, and use the excavated rock & dirt to fill in the OTHER gorges? Is Florida really the only place where we casually terraform terrain wholesale to make it how we want it to be, instead of settling for however it is?

by Anonymousreply 41November 18, 2019 6:59 AM

It sounds like he was closeted and couldn't take it anymore. Hence, suicide.

[quote]if gorges aren't wide or deep, why NOT just bulldoze a hill & use it to fill in the gorges?

The gorges at Cornell are wide and deep. You can't fill them in. Fall Creek Gorge (about 200 ft.), which separates north campus, is presumably the ones people were jumping into. The fencing they put up is on the bridges; I'm not sure there are fences all along the gorge, which runs almost a mile (though not all of that is on campus). When I was there kids would fall in after drinking at fraternity parties; I remember one incident where a kid was running away from police who were there to suppress underage drinking; it was dark, there were no barriers, and in he went.

To think, he signed his own death certificate by signing the acceptance letter to go to Cornell. If he had only gone to another college, he would still be alive today. If only his grades had sucked, he would be alive today.

R41 I can't tell if you're joking with your suggestion that the stunning natural beauty of Ithaca should be destroyed and turned into what? A Disneyland-like faux park such as Orlando? Such ignorance is precisely why so much of America looks bland, fake, and unappealing. Don't forget to plant lots of grass to drain a limited water supply with endless watering. I just hope you're not a city planner. Bulldozing the gorges would also not prevent accidents or suicide or murder from happening in any number of other ways.

Those Greek parents will never believe it's their son's fault.

by Anonymousreply 65November 18, 2019 11:25 PM

R60 showed that there is a lake and stream in the gorge.

I’m reminded of the “smiley face killer” who is believed to have killed a number of young men in the Boston area, but also around the country. The young men typically have wandered off from their friends, inexplicably, and are found, days later, near or in a body of water, such as Boston Harbour. A “smiley face” graffiti has been found in the area of the bodies, hence the nickname. It’s been a large number of deaths.

I suspect their drinks are spiked with a strong drug that makes them discombobulated and suggestible.

R34, to be fair what do you expect to be the number 1 or 2 cause of death on a college campus if not suicide? Heart disease? COPD? End-stage-kidney disease? Stage IV cancer?

When people in their late teens and twenties die it's because of: auto accident, overdose, suicide (not necessarily in that order).

by Anonymousreply 68November 18, 2019 11:30 PM

You forgot murder, r68.

by Anonymousreply 69November 18, 2019 11:32 PM

Someone's invoking the ridiculous "Smiley Face Killer" theory because a young man was found dead near water? Plenty of people have died at Cornell, either falling into the gorge or jumping in.

by Anonymousreply 70November 18, 2019 11:56 PM

He was pushed in after propositioning a jock and having sex, then failing to tell all the other frat boys in their dorm.

R 65 The parents are against the Greek system, they are going after the frats as responsible for the death, they are not defending the Fraternity?

by Anonymousreply 72November 19, 2019 12:16 AM

I started the original thread on this incident. Also I went to Cornell. It's not easy to fall into a gorge. Jump, yeah, that can be done. If it's a suicide. But as a 1st semester freshman, he wouldn't have built up any angst about grades and failure, yet, so it's not a typical timing/scenario for a Cornell suicide.

Sad. Just a waste.

by Anonymousreply 73November 19, 2019 12:21 AM

R68 I was interjecting that no one was mentioning that it might have been suicide, despite the fact that the death scene matched the situation of numerous suicides on campus and that the data of possible suicide highly supports that likelihood over murder or accident. No one seems to be looking at the obvious, displaced, outcasted, gay freshman in over his head commits suicide, if he was trans the numbers increases even more for suicide attempt.

by Anonymousreply 74November 19, 2019 12:23 AM

This young man wouldn't be "displaced, outcasted, gay freshman" on an Ivy Campus. Hello?

by Anonymousreply 90November 19, 2019 7:46 AM

r59, in my defense, I've never (knowingly) seen a 'gorge' in my life. I googled 'gorge', and saw photos that looked like big overgrown drainage ditches. Hence, my impression that gorges are just inconvenient blights on the landscape that get in the way and cause problems (like people falling in) & should just be filled in.

R57's pic certainly does change that impression.

R59, you have to remember... for the most part, for most of the year, "the outdoors" in Florida are completely miserable. There's a good reason why Florida had statistically no population prior to air conditioning & the start of large-scale terraforming in the early 1900s... it was basically uninhabitable. We don't value natural environments, precisely because OUR raw, natural environment is so awful.

by Anonymousreply 98November 19, 2019 5:36 PM

R97, that sounds like a wonderful way to pass time -- if I ever find myself in Ithaca, I'd love to try it. Not while drunk, and being careful to watch my footing, of course....

by Anonymousreply 99November 19, 2019 7:33 PM

R99, you won't fall to your death if you're IN the gorge. Try Taughannock in the summer when you can walk up the dry riverbed to the falls—I've seen bald eagles there. And of course you'll have to go the Ornithology Lab's Sapsucker Woods, particularly during migration. I'd also recommend Stewart Park (the end of Cayuga Lake) for ducks and geese when it's not frozen.

by Anonymousreply 100November 19, 2019 7:37 PM

Cornell and gorge suicides aren't exactly an unknown pheonommnenomnomenone.

by Anonymousreply 103November 20, 2019 1:40 AM

The "Botanical Garden" eg Cornell Plantations is kind of upstream from that gorge. Maybe it technically covers the first part of the gorge - just the cliff and Fall Creek bed.

by Anonymousreply 104November 20, 2019 2:19 AM

If his body was found in the Botanical Gardens then his death had nothing to do with a gorge. They run alongside Beebe Lake, and there's a slope, but I don't recall any place you could actually fall in to your death—unless maybe he fell and hit his head on something.

by Anonymousreply 105November 20, 2019 2:20 AM

I recall it being rather steep and forested behind the Human Ecology and Ag Quad along Beebe Lake but yes no gorge.
