The announcement that Mal Young was exiting came last December.
Should we expect the current regime's dismissal in a few weeks?
Or at least the addition of a new co-head writer to "help" Griffith?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 18, 2019 6:47 PM |
We can only hope.
There have been a few okay changes, but there still needs to be something to make it all gel together. A few boring characters need to go, and this show needs a thirsty shit stirring younger female character to stir everything up.

They were right to bring Staff back. Michelle IS Phyllis. Too bad they’re giving her practically nothing to do. Why can’t Phyllis completely own the hotel? Abby already has the restaurant. And there’s really no use for Chelsea having any part of it. Overall it’s the boring storylines that’s killing the show.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 19, 2019 1:07 AM |
The Bell shows seem to be hacking away at budgets.
At B&B they just let Patrick Mulcahey - probably the best writer B&B ever had - go, so that show will soon lose whatever small about of humanity that made it bearable all together.
Josh G is boring us to death at Y&R, and it seems like the let's blow shit up faction and the let's spotlight history factions are fighting.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 19, 2019 4:04 AM |
[quote] At B&B they just let Patrick Mulcahey go ...
Hmmm ... Maybe Mulcahey can come over to Y&R to "help" Griffith out. .. He and Griffith were both at "Santa Barbara" during the soap's heyday. .. Steve Kent at Sony would know. He was one of the producers of the show.

They did such a great job casting Mark Grossman. That's why this Chance recast is such a bust. How could the person who found Grossman think Danny Boaz is acceptable?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 19, 2019 1:57 PM |
I don't mind Donny Boaz, but Chance is a new character to me. I was not watching when he was on before. I do wonder if Donny's last name rhymes with the speaker brand, or if it's pronounced "BO-azz."
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 19, 2019 3:14 PM |
I wouldn’t mind Boaz either, if he were playing an age appropriate character. Maybe someone like Greg Foster or Victor’s brother or maybe even a recast Snapper.

Having Amanda practice her legal defense of Nate on the patio of Crimson Lights was hilarious ... well, almost as hilarious as that bad wig they have Mishael Morgan wearing.
Did social influencer, Theo, go out and get a (bad) spray tan? He looked ochre today.
Danny Boaz is so average. Are they trying to lure Steve Burton (Dylan McAvoy) fans?

This reminds me that about a year or so ago (?) Jacob Young did an interview where he said something about Brad Bell having turned the show over to two newer/younger members of his writing team, who, in Young's opinion, "don't understand how to write a soap." .. (To me that looked to be Adam Dusevoir and Frank Pinicotti - the two guys on far right and far left in the photo link.) .. If veteran Mulcahey didn't like the environment, then maybe he's been waiting for his contract to end to get out. As I recall, he walked away from Santa Barbara when Conboy came in because he wanted nothing to do with his vision of the soap.

R31 It sounds like Aunt Jack's on a mission to prevent Theo from going. Why he would give two shits is the real question. He's probably just miffed because Ashley is behind it, and he wants to one-up her..
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 20, 2019 5:44 AM |

R36 I think they're trying to paint that Ashley "empathizes" with Theo as something of an "outsider," because she exists due to Dina cheating on John and fucking Brent -- just like Theo's father (and therefore Theo himself) exists due Dina cheating on John and fucking Stuart.
If they looked around Europe, they might be able to start a club with a half dozen more members.

I don't hate Theo.
But truth is, if picked up and left tomorrow, I wouldn't care.
And that's really the issue for me: Indifference.
Now, if we knew that Theo getting under Kyle's skin actually had to do with the two of them having hooked-up at some point back in NYC, then we might have something.
But no. They're too timid to write something different and interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | November 21, 2019 2:23 AM |
R42 The first one (if I remember correctly) was a more clean-cut twink but couldn't act. The current Theo looks like he smells, so I don't find him attractive at all.

Here is old Theo from the 5/9 episode. Too young looking. And he wasn't a good actor.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | November 21, 2019 5:03 AM |
R51 I could see that being mentioned again in about five years when Johnny Abbott and Christian Newman are both SORASed to high school age and begin dating.
Mischievous Johnny will get on the internet and pull up the "scandalous" exposé appearing in "Restless Style" that his own publisher-father, Billy, wrote about Adam during that time and show it to Christian: "See Chris, your dad liked cock too! .. And have you seen that Rafe Torres guy lately? .. What a hot Latin daddy! .. We should take his Introduction to Business Law class when we we're at GCU."

This describes my relationship with the whole damn show. I like Theo, too. I like that he causes tension with Kyle and I like that he's now part of the legacy families. And I wish TPTB could be less concerned about driving away its dying base and doing something to attract new, younger viewers. What have they got to lose?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | November 21, 2019 6:24 AM |
It can't be that hard to find an actor who's decent and hot, and yet they keep casting these weird looking guys.
Theo's kinda hot but bland as fuck and nuChance looks like shoe leather.

I had to laugh when Aunt Jack asked Theo, "How would you feel working UNDER Kyle?"
Was waiting for Theo to say, "No problem, sir. Reverse cowboy is one of your son's favorite positions!"
Anyway Theo and JaBottom forced to burn the midnight oil on some project is a porn reel waiting to happen.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 22, 2019 8:29 PM |
They should have pregnant Lola walk in on Theo and Kyle fucking on a desk at Jabot when she decides to surprise them with a late-night snack at work.
It would be new rendition of pregnant Patty Williams showing up at Jabot and seeing Real Jack and Dianejenkins going at it. Patty ran off in tears and tripped over a potted plant, causing her to miscarry.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 22, 2019 8:49 PM |
What was that scene with Amanda near the end of Friday's episode meant to show?
Amanda had already said good-night to Nate and getting on the elevator to her hotel room, then suddenly, they show her in some bar looking at songs on a juke box.
The hot lumbersexual who walked past her in his flannel shirt and shearling vest made it look like she was in a gay western bar.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 22, 2019 9:16 PM |
R59, Could the song she played on the jukebox have been a favorite of Devon and Hilary's?
Is Amanda really Hilary?

As good a casting job as they did with Mark Grossman as Adam, I'm just not liking this Danny Boaz as Chance.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 22, 2019 10:15 PM |
Theo was not written as likable at first. He was arrogant and annoying. It was meant to be an irritant.
But apparently TPTB liked what Tyler Johnson was doing, so in mid Sept or so, they started writing Theo as a more sympathetic and likable character. It started with the scene where Theo fainted in Lola's kitchen at the sight of blood.
That's when they started setting things up for him to eventually become part of the extended Abbott family. I even commented on one of these Y&R threads that I was suddenly liking Theo more after seeing that fainting scene.

when Y&R had an event at the Paley the moderator from the NY Times listed all of Bergman's many stories, the Emmys, influence on the show and then he says, or as we call you at my house, "the new Jack."
Bergman laughed about it and was good natured, but I'm sure he breathed a sigh when he learned of Lester's passing. He was never going to come back given his treatment of Lauralee, but never say never.

Is the character really needed other than being tied to Victoria? They probably won’t get rid of him, but if Miller came back they would have to give him something major to do. The show is so lackluster now, I’m sure Miller wouldn’t give them the time of day. Thompson is such a one note actor and rarely smiles. He pretty much fits how boring the show has become.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | November 24, 2019 4:44 PM |
With an actor like Billy Miller in the role, Billy Abbott would be a major force. He is actually the heir to Terry Lester's Jack. They just shackled him to that awful Victoria recast. I could see Billy's Billy with Amanda or liven up that Summer character or maybe he could start throwing pipe up into Nikki and watch Jill's head explode.

R108, exactly.
We KNOW what brought in the ratings.
Story.
From 1987-89, Y&R lost Brenda Dickson, Eileen Davidson, and Terry Lester.
In 1994, the ratings were up to 9.1 and 'all' Victor did was walk into the Colonnade Room after being presumed dead.
Bill knew how to pace and write; he had everyone tuning in to see everyone's reaction -- particularly Nikki, Jack and Vicki's.

by Anonymous | reply 127 | November 25, 2019 1:49 AM |
R126 If you believe what Jacob Young said about B&B, it doesn't sound like Brad Bell does much of the writing. And ever since daddy left, that show has seemed like a repetitious, musical chairs mess. I'd hate to see what he'd do given a full hour of storyline. He's also king of announcing big plans for some new or returning actor(s), then failing to deliver on it with the character(s) soon being jettisoned.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | November 25, 2019 1:59 AM |
But could it get any worse R128. I say give Brad a shot.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | November 25, 2019 2:02 AM |
But you're missing the point, R129. Brad isn't even writing B&B and he's terribly one note. An hour of Brad Bell would be ten times worse than any of the other folks they've had lately.
The problem is that most of the writers who really knew how to write soaps in a suspensful, balanced way are either dead or retired, and the ones still around are unwilling to take the job for what little they pay HWs nowadays. It's a thankless fucking job, with advertisers and the network on one side and an increasingly shrinking pool of viewers on the other. Long term story is impossible to write when half the cast is recurring.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | November 25, 2019 2:13 AM |
And I guess you're missing mine, R130, that no one has been able to get the "voice" of this show right since Bell died. They threw it all out the window when Chuck Pratt came aboard, some might say way way before that. Either way we are at the point now where this show is going through HWs at an insane rate. We are going to have to agree to disagree about Brad. The networks want to keep up the status quo, they don't want to invest in developing new talent. The rumor is that James Harmon Brown is the next headwriter and he's 70. If they don't give it to Brad, the should take a chance and give it Jamey Giddens, but they won't do something that radical.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | November 25, 2019 2:23 AM |
Well, we can agree to disagree, I get what you're saying but just don't think Brad is the answer. But I do think Giddens is talented (as much as we have made fun of him on the DL) and getting him on board would be a good idea.
I'm surprised Sara Bibel and some of the other writers are still there, after Mal Young I would think they had PTSD.

Why do the couple of British soaps still work? I always felt the problem was when the daytime soaps tried to knock off the nighttime style, particularly these big mega corporations. R144 Are you talking about the episode or the opening credits? Mark (Adam) was in neither on Monday. The whole episode is about Jack and mainly the Abbott family, with a few others thrown in during flashbacks. .. And that's why they had Dina and Traci in the opening credits. .. On that note, Mark has said that he's done his shot for the main titles, but they haven't screened it yet. .. It appears the new clips for the missing cast members are being released rather scattershot.

R147 I already explained to R142 in my response at R143 that it wasn't an entirely new opening, but just a new clip of Dina that was inserted.
At this point, I get the idea that a brand new style of opening is not coming and that was just a confused rumor based on actors going in to shoot these new insert clips. It wouldn't make much sense for them to be wasting time and money updating these old opening credits, if something entirely new was in the works. - jmho

[quote]She burned through lots of story
That is one of the issues when you get writers from other genres who don't quite understand how daytime works. They are used to a night time pace so they just go through story after story.
Quite frankly I'm old enough to remember when soap opera stories unfolded over months, not weeks. When 2 or 3 episodes a week were nothing but recap of the A & B stories and simple, quiet character building moments among the supporting cast. Something big didn't have to happen every day. And most of the shows just built to Friday with some sort of resolution on Monday.
But, alas... times have changed and the audience has changed with it.
The other shows went down different paths and played with the genre and brought in other elements and mixed elements, but Y&R remained true, classic soap opera longer than anyone else, which is probably why it has struggled so much since Bell stepped down. And which is why, in spite of remaining #1 (because of time slot IMO), it has never been able to recapture what made it so great.
There is no one left who knows how to properly do or wants to do old fashioned soap opera and that's kind of why Y&R worked.

Sally Susman Morina's recent run is the closest thing we've seen in the last 20 years to the old fashioned soaps of the 60s and 70s. She tried to mimic Bill Bell by slowing things down. And we were all bored to death! At the same time, her stories lacked the compelling must-see pizzazz that made Bell's stories worth the wait.

Okay this could be fun.

Adam: Look Chance, I've already told you, it was a one-off. You need to forget about that night.
Chance: Is that the same thing you told Rafe?
Adam: Well, there's a thought! Maybe you should look Rafe up. I'm sure he could put you in touch with an Alpha top .. or two.
Chance: Who do you think you're fooling? Don't forget. I have contacts at the FBI. .. Let's see now. What was the name of that studio you worked at to help pay for Harvard? "Brokeback Farm Boys" or something? .. You may have been able to buy them out and destroy all the videos when you were CEO at Newman, but the porn compliance records for "Victor Wilson" still exist at the DOJ.
Adam: Is that supposed to be some kind of threat?
Chance: No. It just means you should consider what I'm offering.
Adam: And what pray tell is that?
Chance: I'll start dating your sister, Abby, then you and I can get close and become like bros, maybe even future in-laws. No one would be suspicious if we start hanging out and going on weekend fishing trips together.
Adam: Fishing trips? Really?
Chance: Okay. Movie dates. Obscure foreign films with subtitles.
Adam: Here's a better idea. You start dating Abby and coax her into pegging you. She seems open to a little kink, so just go for it.
[ PHYLLIS THEN BARGES INTO THE PENTHOUSE ]
Phyllis: What's going on here? I can tell something's going on between the two of you. Well? IS ONE OF YOU GOING TO TELL ME WHAT'S GOING ON? .. And don't tell me you're making secret plans to go to the Danny Romalotti concert up in Duluth and not take me.

by Anonymous | reply 198 | November 26, 2019 11:33 PM |
Here is my controversial and probably unpopular opinion about Daniel Goddard. Personally, I don't blame him for having a problem with Cane being in a romance with Tracey. You have 65 year old Jack and 75 year old Victor getting young hotties every other season and then you want to put a reasonably attractive guy with older and overweight Tracey played by an actress without a contract. Maybe he should have been grateful that the show was trying to throw him a bone, but the only way that I could have seen that story playing out was Cane reverting to his old ways and using Tracey for her money.
The Lane fans were not going to accept him with anyone else and were pretty fucking abusive to Beth Maitland on social media. The show probably should have written him off with Lily in some kind o f HEA storyline and be done with it or they should have recast Lily. But Mal young wanted the Winters gone to showcase the Rosales family. Brytni whatshername would have been a great Lily recast.

There are multiple actors with the initials MM connected to Y&R.
Mishael Morgan
Michael Mealor
Michael Muhney
Please be careful to specify which one you're talking about.

Cane gaslighting Traci would have been fun. Traci needs to be written as a real fat woman.

Traci COULD be a Fun Frau character if they wrote her like she was the heroine in a Hallmark Movie Channel Xmas movie. Make her a little saucy and just pretend she's not overweight. Fraus would love it and the actress would do well with the material.

"MM" was obviously Morgan in relation to CK. Plus, Muhney is irrelevant. No one cares or talks about him any longer, especially as it relates to contracts. He's been gone longer than he worked there. And Mealor is JaBottom.

Do the producers actually think the kid playing Connor is a good child actor?
There are some excellent child actors on the soaps . . . he's not one of them.

This kid is one of the worst child actors they've had in quite some time.
And Dear God in Heaven, they're building a Christmas story around him.

Victor and Nikki look like they're ready to join in the Thanksgiving festivities in the piano room at The Rainbow Gardens Retirement Home.

Connor sets a fire at the coffee house, trapping Mariah and Tessa. I think this is the end of Tessa.

Is that why Connor is played as an angry non-verbal? Or are they getting ready to sentence him to juvie for a little post Christmas SORASing?

^^
You think Connor is non-verbal? That kid won't shut up whining.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | November 29, 2019 1:36 PM |
Connor is special, right?

R220, Didn't Dina ignite The Underground just last year?
by Anonymous | reply 225 | November 29, 2019 10:43 PM |
Did Dina start this one too? She's a firecracker!

Are the writers about to gift us with a Billy/Amanda coupling?
by Anonymous | reply 227 | November 30, 2019 12:17 AM |
Billy is going to be with Amanda and obviously Rey with Victoria to create a quad (?) incl. Sharon.
by Anonymous | reply 228 | November 30, 2019 5:40 AM |
Is it Chewing Gum Billy, or is it now Shelling Peanuts Billy?
by Anonymous | reply 229 | November 30, 2019 11:18 PM |
R228 Wimptoira better start doing some stretching exercises, if she's going from Billy's pencil to Rey's beer can.

R230, Don't you think JT helped her out down there?
by Anonymous | reply 231 | December 1, 2019 6:28 AM |
[quote] ... and obviously Rey with Victoria to create a quad ...
THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEEEEEE !!
Since Cane is the one Victoria kissed, causing Billy to go visit Lily in prison and blab about it ... plus, Billy already hates my guts.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | December 1, 2019 7:03 AM |
Cane did have some chemistry with Victoria. He had none with Traci.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | December 2, 2019 7:08 AM |
It's amusing how the writers eliminate the presence of certain characters at family/holiday events with a brief mention of them.
by Anonymous | reply 234 | December 2, 2019 8:03 AM |
So, those Dena Higley rumors...
