Just finished the series, binge watched it, it was that compelling. They definitely covered some of the gay angle, but mostly with the gay relationship in HS, nothing really about Ryan, and a brief mention of the prison guy. Dennis Sansoucie was very vocal and discussed their teenage affair - he also had his father with him who was a homophobe but is now supportive. The other gay face out there was Ryan O'Callaghan who discussed his struggles being gay and closeted in the NFL.

The reason for Hernandez's suicide was that he wanted to vacate his conviction by dying before his appeal - he told Shay in his suicide note that she would be RICH (underlined three times).

What was very evident in the documentary was the destruction and heartbreak Aaron left behind. The destroyed families of the two Boston double murder victims who he tracked from the Cure night club, the grieving mother of Odin Lloyd, the rift in the relationship between Shay and her sister who was Odin's girlfriend when Shay stood by her man. His own family and daughter.

The documentary tries to suggest that Aaron really fell apart when his father died and his mother took up with Tanya Singleton's husband immediately after. That Aaron's father was the only one who could control him. However, Aaron's dad was a violent, alcoholic abuser of both his mother and him and was part of the toxic cocktail that turned him into a raging mess.

It becomes very evident that Aaron Hernandez was a really fragmented personality and one of those personalities was a sociopathic and violently unstable serial murderer. He had to be taken out of society. But alongside that personality was someone charming, desperate to be loved, vulnerable and childlike, charismatic, sensual and funny. But the toxic brew of his life and his own demons was going to win.

The documentary does a good job laying out the murders, the clues, the police investigations and the trials.
