I know a guy who was in a coma after doing the same thing at Grand Central Station. He used to be hot. Not so much now.

Which firm was he with?

There's a picture of the stairwell in the article. It's steep and the handrail is narrow. How could anyone think for a moment it would be safe.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 14, 2019 11:27 PM |
I worked there, it is a beautiful Art Deco Machine Age stairwell, but as you can see there are little fins on it that would make sliding hard to do and it not like a long swoop.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 14, 2019 11:28 PM |
Poor guy, a shameful way to die. Now if he had been on the bannister at the Met....
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 14, 2019 11:32 PM |
I don't buy it. Something isn't quite right about this story. The way the museum officials behaved... seems like something else happened.

The family is whining— “They haven’t offered me condolences or anything. To not even get a call saying we’re sorry or anything, nothing…
No one at the museum has reached out to his mom or me."

What are the supposed to say? Sorry that your son was an idiot?

This person was attending a function with alcohol.
Museums have good looking buildings and foolishly rent out their rooms for functions with alcohol.

R7 Do you think Dawson bumped on the fins?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 14, 2019 11:50 PM |
They must have a lot of security cameras in that place, so I'm betting there is video of the incident.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 14, 2019 11:51 PM |
R20 You did a quick Google search of Kirkland Dawson's name?

Yes.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 14, 2019 11:55 PM |
R11, I read that and thought, perhaps mother and sister weren't on his list of emergency contacts and didn't know who to reach? And if mama expects the museum to "say sorry," no chance, honey, that might be misconstrued as an admission of guilt.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 14, 2019 11:58 PM |
I'm guessing it was one of those evening "First Fridays" events with booze, so perhaps he was drunk.

It doesn't seem normal to me that someone over the age of 30 would still be sliding down banisters in public buildings. Not too bright. Another example that any mentally challenged fool can go law school.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | October 15, 2019 9:28 AM |
Barrister o’er the banister!
Ashes in the canister.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | October 15, 2019 10:03 AM |
A cursory eyeball at that railing would show it doesn't tempt with any length of sliding pleasure - as there are fins every few feet and then right angles. Also, sheer drop to concrete. Even a drunken brain would recognize these impediments to carefree glee! This guy must be quite dumb.
Or, a different story - maybe he just fell over it.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | October 15, 2019 10:10 AM |
Is his ghost going to haunt the stairwell day and night?
by Anonymous | reply 73 | October 15, 2019 10:17 AM |
I'm sorry he's dead but damn, that really is an embarrassing way to go. When I saw the thread title I thought the subject would be a child or at least a stupid teenage boy goofing off in front of his friends, not a grown-ass man in his 30's with a law degree.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | October 15, 2019 11:08 AM |
Was this promising young man, Kirkland, involved in this new initiative to make art transform the lives of young criminals and support social justice programs?
If so, this is a double-tragedy.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | October 15, 2019 11:09 AM |
The Brooklyn Museum is home to one of the premiere collections of Egyptian Art. It’s obvious that an Ancient Egyptian curse player a part in this so called “accident.”
by Anonymous | reply 76 | October 15, 2019 11:45 AM |
How many eyewitnesses say they saw him do this? Because the story makes no sense on its face. A thirtysomething lawyer suddenly decided to slide down a *very* dangerous-looking banister? Even with booze, it's hard to believe.
Was he a criminal lawyer? Because they often wind up making enemies.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | October 15, 2019 11:53 AM |
I can picture this perfectly. First Saturday is a charged, exciting event with lots of interesting Brooklynites and a variety of music, dance, screenings and talks going on all at once. They serve alcohol in the lobby and the 3rd floor (where he fell from) or he was already coming from drinks or dinner. There's always a bit of a wait at all of the elevators so he and friends and maybe someone he was trying to impress decided to take the stairs. That staircase is rather beautiful and wide so the novelty of it. And it's out of the main flow enough so there'd be a break in visitors long enough to try something really stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | October 15, 2019 11:59 AM |
R77 he was drunk Rose
by Anonymous | reply 79 | October 15, 2019 12:05 PM |
R33 he couldn’t have been family, no self-respecting gay man would have only hopped on the banister at anyplace other than the bottom of the stairwell.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | October 15, 2019 12:28 PM |
Everytime I was in Washington DC, I had to hang on to the handrail and close my eyes on some of those loooong escalators going down into the subway. I can't sliding down a banister like that.

It must have been a hell of a splinter to have caused a death. Banisters need to be sanded and refinished once in a while.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | October 15, 2019 5:13 PM |
