Just FYI because I don't know if subscribers can see it or not but the last thread was blocked for non-subscribers around the 540 mark. You can tell because that's when it died. Someone suggested starting a new thread as soon as that happens. Good idea.

[quote]"I don't think it's really a driving issue. I just think it's a very big safety concern," Smith said.

This was some idiots comment about election security in the previous thread. Is it possible that these people think the term "election security" is actually talking about physical safety at the polling places and not hacking, etc.? I mean, no one is that stupid, right?

by Anonymousreply 2September 9, 2019 2:30 AM

This was my response to the link posted, r2.

I wish stupid was fixable, [R583]

......In the eastern Kentucky mountain city of Pikeville, retired coal miner and railroad worker John Deskins says that election security is important but that Democrats are the ones who have mishandled the issue."What little bit I understand about it is they put other implements in it to try to alter exactly what's necessary," Deskins said.

*and*

DeRonda Smith, a retired teacher from Hazard, says she also thinks election security is important, but McConnell's handling of the issue won't change her support for him."I don't think it's really a driving issue. I just think it's a very big safety concern," Smith said.

*and*

Pikeville resident Jim Hamilton says he was a Democrat for 47 years."When Trump decided to run, I wasn't a Democrat anymore. I'm a Republican," Hamilton said."I couldn't stand anymore this Obama thing," he said. "Obama came here to eastern Kentucky; he shut our coal mines down."

and there really should be constant coverage this week on the idea that Trump considered inviting the Taliban to Camp David). The week of 9/11!!!!

has any repub said anything publicly?

by Anonymousreply 14September 9, 2019 5:51 AM

We should start a false story that it has recently been uncovered that Obama considered having the Taliban to Camp David on the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. Then, watch the Repugs go hypocritically apoplectic. Do you think anyone would notice or that the media would just ignore their hypocrisy and go on and on about how both sides are wrong?

by Anonymousreply 15September 9, 2019 6:52 AM

Unfortunately, FCI - I suspect he has so many “acting” officials is because 1. he appoints people too incompetent to be confirmed; and,

2. because the remaining confirmed cabinet officials are too stupid (Carson), loyal (Barr) or corrupt (Chao) to invoke the 25th

Yesterday, we saw video on twitter of Hurricane Dorian victims, people from the Bahamas who have lost everything, and were turned away from Florida because they didn't have visas. They were not allowed to get off the ferry that took them from the Bahamas to Florida. These included families with young children.

And Trump picked a fight with John Legend and his "filthy-mouthed wife" which the media is now giving endless coverage to.

In a previously undisclosed secret mission in 2017, the United States successfully extracted from Russia one of its highest-level covert sources inside the Russian government.

A person directly involved in the discussions said that the removal of the Russian was driven, in part, by concerns that President Donald Trump and his administration repeatedly mishandled classified intelligence and could contribute to exposing the covert source as a spy.

If someone's saying that the last thread didn't get paywalled until about 540, that definitely doesn't explain the reason these threads have slowed. Previous threads would hit 540 on average, within two days. The last thread was open for 2 weeks and still hasn't maxed out.

by Anonymousreply 37September 9, 2019 4:31 PM

Every time they do a story about potential Russian interference in the 2020 election (and given how much election interfering they’re doing around the world right now, the topic comes up a lot), the MSNBC hosts almost always highlight the fact that Mueller has repeatedly warned us about this.

by Anonymousreply 38September 9, 2019 4:33 PM

Much as they were four years ago, the Big Three evening newscasts continue to be obsessed with Donald Trump, pounding him incessantly with highly-negative coverage. But then as now, the networks’ fixation on Trump seems to be leaving comparatively little airtime for his would-be presidential challengers.

From June 1 through August 31, MRC analysts found the networks devoted 838 minutes of airtime — nearly 14 hours — to coverage of President Trump personally, the vast majority of which was negative. (Note: This report only examines coverage of Trump himself, not generic stories about his administration’s activities or those of other top-ranking officials, which accounted for an additional 213 minutes of evening news airtime.)

The airtime devoted to Trump was eleven times greater than that spent on the leading Democratic candidate, former Vice President Joe Biden (just under 74 minutes), and vastly more than the networks gave California Senator Kamala Harris (30 minutes), South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (15 minutes) or Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren (just under 14 minutes).

We have a chief executive who wasn't fairly or truly elected, he illegally profits financially from that office, he is running concentration camps within our borders, he has sold information to hostile foreign powers, he has been deporting people who were legally here, AND WE ARE ALL JUST LETTING IT HAPPEN! In the 60s, people banded together and took to the streets. Now we are just bending over and letting this orange fuhrer fuck us over. Many Germans who lived under Hitler would try to deflect their guilt and complicity by claiming they weren't "aware" of the Nazi death camps. No one in 21st century America can claim they never heard of the crimes and atrocities of Donald J Trump.

I feel horrible for that Russian spy who is now living in the US. He thought he'd be protected but piece of most disgusting shit ever Trump has now put him in jeopardy. NBC news now has a pretty good idea of who he is as a reporter went to his door and 2 cars came to make him leave. The former spy will now likely be moved somewhere else but you just KNOW some news outlet is going to actually out him and his name/identity.

I sadly expect the assholes on Fox to make him their target now and start rumors about him, claiming he's an example of Russian interference because he was "part of the coup to take down Trump".

So Trump has now blown a major source of intelligence we had from within the Russian government. That alone should be impeachable

but with all the new investigations being opened, it's hard to see Democrats finish them all in time. They should have done this MONTHS AGO

Politico: Dems see Trump’s alleged self-dealing as new path to impeachment

Pro-impeachment Democrats are hoping that a renewed focus on corruption and self-dealing could give their effort to oust Trump the momentum that former special counsel Robert Mueller never did.

“The Mueller report has clearly been muddled and I’m not sure that the public really has much of a concept of what that showed,” said Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.), who supports impeachment. “And corruption is pretty easy to understand.”

While they’re not quite admitting defeat on the Mueller report, Yarmuth and other pro-impeachment lawmakers cited efforts by the White House and the Justice Department to slow-walk the House Judiciary Committee’s subpoenas for documents and testimony related to the Mueller probe, many of which are lagging in federal court and could take months to reach a conclusion.

R65, Cellphones in the hands of children, teens, and college students have changed everything, most importantly attention spans, interests, and values.

Young people actually aspire to be "influencers," aka corporate shills, mostly for clothing and cosmetics, on Instagram or YouTube. Girls emulate Kardashians and Jenners, not Sally Ride or HRC. Indeed, Prince Harry married such a person.

There is no way mass civil protests will occur in this country again. Young musicians aren't writing lyrics of protest. Young writers aren't penning books of protest. And with the exception of David Hogg, young people aren't forming organizations of protest.

They simply cannot be off their cellphones long enough. They are the first generations to die while texting.

Open primaries and primary caucuses are opportunities for mischief. They always have been. It allows people to "cross over" and vote in a bald attempt to "choose your opponent." The entire purpose of primaries is that they are partisan. They are the party's opportunity to choose from a field of candidates from their own party that one person who best reflects what voters want from that party's candidate. All primaries ought to be closed, and caucuses ought to be eliminated. In a closed primary, the voter declares their party affiliation, then votes for the person they feel best represents their interests from that party. When the Republicans play these undemocratic games and block candidates from appearing on the ballot all they do is piss off a lot of voters.

I read one account of this Taliban meeting that suggested it was the Taliban who cancelled, not Trump. The talks fell apart, etc. I want more clarity. Did he do it without proper preliminary groundwork, expecting another photo opportunity? It is thecraziest shit I've ever heard from him. They are a terrorist group, an extremist cult. It's like inviting ISIS to Camp David. And doing it right before 9/11 anniversary? This is something he would certainly think was a great idea so he could show off. What a complete asshole. SO disgusting. I hate this man.

Washington Post: Trump accidentally tweeted an insult at a pastor. Here’s how the pastor responded.

But Carl didn’t mince words for the president. “Your heart must be in a dangerous place to have such a consistent flow of defamation and disrespect towards so many,” he said.

He interspersed his own comments throughout the letter with quotes from Abraham Lincoln, a president who never got to use Twitter but still came up with plenty of bon mots. Carl said that he passes Lincoln’s birthplace, which is now a National Park Service site, in his church’s town of Hodgenville, almost every day on his commute.

Perhaps Lincoln would not have been overly fond of Twitter, based on one 1861 quotation that Carl selected from the great emancipator: “I am rather inclined to silence, and whether that be wise or not, it is at least more unusual nowadays to find a man who can hold his tongue than to find one who cannot.”

John Bolton Out as National Security Adviser

By Peter Baker

Sept. 10, 2019, 12:01 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON — President Trump fired John R. Bolton, his third national security adviser, on Tuesday amid fundamental disagreements over how to handle major foreign policy challenges like Iran, North Korea and Afghanistan. Mr. Trump announced the decision on Twitter. “I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service. I will be naming a new National Security Advisor next week.”

His departure comes as Mr. Trump is pursuing diplomatic openings with two of the United States’ most intractable enemies, efforts that have troubled hard-liners in the administration, like Mr. Bolton, who view North Korea and Iran as profoundly untrustworthy.

The president has continued to court Kim Jong-un, the repressive leader of North Korea, despite Mr. Kim’s refusal to surrender his nuclear program and despite repeated short-range missile tests by the North that have rattled its neighbors. In recent days, Mr. Trump has expressed a willingness to meet with President Hassan Rouhani of Iran under the right circumstances, and even to extend short-term financing to Tehran, although the offer has so far been rebuffed.

To his admirers, Mr. Bolton was supposed to be a check on what they feared would be naïve diplomacy, a cleareyed realist who would keep a president without prior experience in foreign affairs from giving away the store to wily adversaries. But Mr. Trump has long complained privately that Mr. Bolton was too willing to get the United States into another war. The tension between the men was aggravated in recent months by the president’s decisions to call off a planned airstrike on Iran in retaliation for the downing of an American surveillance drone and to meet with Mr. Kim at the Demilitarized Zone and cross over into North Korea.

Just for clarification, r101, because there is much confusion between programs:

SSI= Supplemental Security Income and is FEDERAL WELFARE for sick poor people like disabled adult children.

it is not SSDI=Social Security Disability Insurance, which is for people who have paid into Social Security who become disabled.

RSDI= Retirement, Survivors and Disability INSURANCE ↓

SSRI= regular Social Security Retirement Insurance.

SSSI= Social Security SURVIVORS Insurance (confused with SSI) for widows and minor children, and

SSDI= Social Security Disability Insurance.

Treason.

by Anonymousreply 165September 11, 2019 5:00 AM

The media is so totally stupid it boggles the mind. The reason Trump and Pence went to NC to campaign for the piece of shit GOP candidate is because it looked like he'd win. Trump shows up within 48 hours of the election and now he will claim credit for the win. When the truth is he was piggy backing on the Congressional race and not vice versa. He needed this. He needed to be associated with a win right about now.

And it has now been established that inviting the Taliban to Camp David was Trump's idea and Bolton not only strongly disagreed with Trump, he leaked it so it blew up in Trump's face. The Taliban was never going to go anyway, but Trump thought he could stage manage another photo op and do something to turn his dropping poll numbers around. The Foreign policy fuck ups are coming home to roost. North Korea is shooting off missiles again, the CIA had to extract a spy because of Trump, and Iran is producing fissile materials for nuclear weapons.

Trump is crazy. I hope they keep exposing him. That's the only way to stop him. Expose him.

by Anonymousreply 166September 11, 2019 5:25 AM

He is too stupid to know he fucked up. Either that, or he is an asset for Russia. Because what he did was beyond stupid. He endangered lives and doesn't seem to give a fuck. He thinks this makes him a tough journalist.

The Russians obviously knew the guy was missing and drew their own conclusions. I don't think it's a coincidence that all of those other Russian guys just happened to fall off buildings or shoot themselves in the back.

The point is that the source's existence would have been classified information and anything that source passed on to us would be classified as well. Now the source is public knowledge, and every major news organization is undoubtedly submitting FOIA requests for every document related to him and what he told us about Putin's interference in election matters. Some documents are undoubtedly still classified - but others may not be. And since Trump's administration leaks like a sieve, how long before those un-classified documents start leaking out.

Additionally, there are already rumors that the Washington Post was sitting on this story for a couple of years because of National Security reasons - well, they don't have to sit on the story anymore, do they?

R206, I’d laugh, except I think the “confrontation” with homelessness will involve taking anyone deemed to be homeless into custody and putting in them in a detention facility. A privately run facility, of course, so the jailers will want to keep these people locked up for as long as possible.

by Anonymousreply 216September 12, 2019 3:21 AM

Part of the reason there is so much homelessness in CA is because of the mild weather compared to other more wintry parts of the country. If you polled the homeless here you'd find many migrated here from colder states where homelessness is deadly in winter.

The North Carolina Republican Legislatures deceptively holding a vote to override the Governor's veto on the budget while the Democrats were attending a 9-11 memorial service, is as low as one can get. They make Wisconsin GOP legislators look ethical by comparison.

The NC Republican Legislators outright LIED to their Democratic colleagues about holding a vote during that time.

Of course, the NC citizens will tolerate such nasty, deplorable tactics.

Even in South Carolina, the GOP would not go that low, and the fewer Democrats would have a fit, and people would be demonstrating at the Capitol in Columbia.

R235 Yes, the media is leading the crowd in blaming everything on Nancy. This is one of several (Russian?) propaganda narratives being pushed and I've seen it here at DL this week. They are going after Nancy hard. And all the usual suspects are falling for it.

-Blame the Dems for things not being accomplished despite the fact they have passed so many bills Moscow Mitch won't even take up.

-The Dems are ignoring the AA community or only pay attention during election years so many should just "walk away".

-The Dems aren't good on the economy despite every fact to the contrary.

- Hispanics don't like illegal immigration. They don't like line jumpers implying the Dems are all in for illegal immigration despite facts to the contrary.

-Dems are the extreme party despite every single extreme thing the GOP does multiple times a day nation wide and in so many states (looking at you NC!).

- Dems are the party of old people despite the GOP electing the oldest president ever and Moscow Mitch's history with the Norte Chico.

- Dems are elitists and the party of elitists despite all the billionaires and swamp creatures who prop up the GOP.

That is just the start. Watch for emerging narratives that are damaging to Dems. A lot of it will appear to come from "liberals" but we all know where it is coming from.

Nicolle Wallace and her panel we’re going hard after Nancy and the House Democrats today on Deadline: White House. She showed a series of clips from showing five different ways Representstives haves described what is / has been happening regarding impeachment-related activities. On this point alone - the lack of consistent messaging regarding this impeachment rollout - I really do have to agree. Nadler, in particular, equivocates like no other while under questioning from reporters.

Is it really that difficult to come out to the public with a unified message about all of this? Spend five hours in a room and come up with a single phrase or something. You know the GOP always does that.

by Anonymousreply 255September 12, 2019 10:49 PM

R255 On the messaging issue, I agree. Dems need to get their shit together. I always watch Nicolle's show. She is all on board with the Dems right now. She said she will vote for whoever the Dem nominee is. I've noticed David Jolly is getting very frustrated with the Dems- too frustrated and it does no good to carp on them while the GOP is in the shape it is in. We are ALL frustrated but we need to aim our anger at only one party- the GOP. We can snipe at the Dems later. They are not actively destroying this nation. They are not compromised like the GOP. They are not the problem.

by Anonymousreply 256September 12, 2019 10:54 PM

Oh, absolutely, FCI. I totally agree with you. I was just saying that on this particular point surrounding the messaging, it was well articulated by Nicolle Wallace and the entire panel and I agreed. My outright disgust is always with the GOP, but it would be great if the Democrats would nail this one thing down in a more effective way.

And I love that Nicolle always repeats her “I will vote for the bus of the Democratic nominee” line.

by Anonymousreply 257September 12, 2019 11:13 PM

At a mid-August fundraiser in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Ivanka Trump was asked to name the personality traits she inherited most from her parents.

Without much of a pause, Trump told the crowd of roughly 120 high-end donors that her mother gave her an example of how to be a powerful, successful woman.

And her father? He passed onto her his moral compass, she said, according to two event attendees.

“A lot is happening in Washington and all across this great country of ours, and it’s because we have a president who is a true leader, in my opinion. One I happen to believe will be regarded as one of this country’s greatest presidents, indeed, our greatest.

At every level, on every floor, this White House is energized. There’s sunshine beaming throughout the place, and on almost every face. It’s winner, and winning center, and our White House, our President, is at the top of his game.”

I may have an unpaid consulting gig for one of the candidates or for the Dems in general. My friend floated my name as someone they could get different POVs from. They want people they can trust who have worked for Dems in some capacity in the past. My friend will get back to me with details later but asked if I would be interested. She told me to watch what I say "on that datalounge site".

My friend is still pursuing being a TV pundit but she said she may have to join a campaign to up her profile. She worked for the congressman for 26 years, she's in her late 40's, very attractive and an effective, dynamic speaker. She's also way too nice. I told her she should read DL more to fix that. :)

IMO the most important thing we can be doing is getting involved in every effort aimed at ballot security, and ending voter suppression and fraud. We need to get active and vocal, and help shine a spotlight on attempts to fuck with our ability to conduct fair elections. They get away with things when they operate undercover. Exposure and constant attention can be effective deterrents. So can pressuring changes in the way elections are conducted.

I 've said this before, but it's worth repeating: We need to turn off the noise machine. How many more times do we need the media to breathlessly report the latest outrage? First they help normalize him, now they chase after every "shiny object" he uses to distract, to bait & switch. And get ready. But next year they will be slamming the Democrats, using false equivalencies, and bullshit to neutralize the reactions to Trump.

There are certain members of the media I trust. Certain publications I trust. But aside from getting my daily news feeds I'm taking a break from the Media coverage. I'm going to focus on ballot integrity and voter turnout. The absurd coverage of the healthcare "debate" and the hyping by the media absent any real news, is worth ignoring. Suffice to say, all the Democrats care about better healthcare. All the Democrats care about the environment. All the Democrats care about income inequality and tax reform. All the Democrats care about gun safety, and education. I'm not going to get played by the media this time. They're in it for ratings and revenue. Never forget that.

We need to focus on state elections too. We need to get the Republicans out of our legislatures. 2020 is important. After the census, legislative redistricting takes place. Please remember 2010. That's when we gave it all away. In 2006 elected a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress. In 2010, we didn't show up. We gave it away. The days of sitting on the sidelines are over. We have to be engaged. We have to pay attention. And we have to be smart.

R316 and R321 I did have a little happy hour with friends. Buzzing but not drunk. I am just catching up on different shows I missed this week such as Colbert and Myers.

R314 Thank you, babe! No, I would not start shilling for anyone. This gig, if it happens, is for my opinion. They are looking for many former staffers and such they feel will give honest assessments. If I start really feeling strongly for one particular candidate I would not down any of the other Dems.

As far as impeachment coming down the pike- I, like many of you, feel emotionally and intellectually that is must happen. Then I listen to people in the know and it is far more complicated. It is hard for me to explain this in a post. In short, we are up against propaganda from multiple foreign entities as well as those on the right in this country that is on the level of the best in history. We are up against people of extraordinary means who are damn good at swaying public opinion. Nancy, for as frustrating as she seems, understands this in ways that would astound you all. It is why they want her gone. It is why she has always been the #1 target. If she isn't there yet, I trust she knows information I am not privy to and trust she is making a great decision.

And seriously, most of you are far superior to me on so many topics. I am in awe of the amount of quality analytical abilities so many possess here. I have said many times DLers need to get into politics. The Mueller threads are full of posters who need to be pundits.

R329, this is serious. I'm thinking Jared got busted. But once again, another very clear, obvious indication that the Republicans are a corrupt, traitorous bunch of shits. Barr has ties to Alpha Bank. He also has ties to other big Russian $$$ clients through his former law firm. His son or son-in-law is working in the White House office of the Special Counsel, and his daughter is over at the State Department...I think. Not sure. The network of corruption extends through every single branch of our government, and they're using the Trump administration to move people into key positions in every important cabinet position. We're dealing with a nest of vipers.

by Anonymousreply 330September 14, 2019 11:46 AM

We need to pay attention. Trump might do anything to stay in office, including declare an emergency and suspend the Constitution. Watch what's going on in Russia. There have been huge demonstrations and hundreds of dissident leaders arrested. The recent election showed gains for Putin's opponents in the Moscow council elections, so now he is rounding up dissidents. Erdogan did it in Turkey. Trump faces prosecution and jail time if he is defeated. He will not give up the WH willingly. And the Republicans will support him. THey have made it clear they will do what ever they feel is necessary to have their way. They ignore the Law. Barr is a monster. So is McConnell.

"Do Republicans really want to be the party with a nominating process that more resembles Russia or China than our American tradition?" the group writes. "Under this President, the meaning of truth has been challenged as never before. ... Do we as Republicans accept all this as inevitable? by Anonymousreply 346September 14, 2019 6:11 PM

R335 That last sentence is snort inducing. The GOP hasn't had those principles in decades much less a few years ago. The GOP loves to live in these delusions I think some of them sadly believe it but is hasn't been the case since Ike.

After these Republicans running against Pres Bone Spurs don't get the chance to actually have a contest due to the GOP turning into Russia, they need to endorse whomever gets the Dem nom and all of them, as well as the likes of Hogan, #walkaway from the GOP. They need to declare the GOP wholly and hopelessly corrupt and the only way they will support the party again is if 99% of the current members quit or are voted out.

All these GOP office holders gnashing their teeth behind closed doors to every reporter in the world saying how horrifying our derrr leader is need to #walkaway from the GOP. They want to get rid of McConnell, we need 4 GOP Senators willing to declare they are independent and will caucus with the Dems. We need some fucking heroes to step up.

[quote]Exactly [R337]. When you think of people who get so passionate about voting for the next "American Idol" or whatever, but can't care less about voting in elections, it's just pathetic.

Honestly, then they should make voting as easy as it is for these other types of contests. It's getting easier with early voting but that still requires people to drive somewhere and find the polling place and wait for whomever else is ahead of them, etc. That might not be a big deal for some people but the lower income people who lack transportation and child care and work on a schedule set randomly each week by someone else it can make a huge difference.

Make national voting online or even by mail with electronic verification of receipt of vote and watch the number of people who vote soar and turn decidedly Democratic. Old white people who make up the Repug's sole constituency at this point have no problem voting now which is why Repug's will fight anything that makes voting easier with everything hindrance they can throw at it.

How hard is it for the Dems to issue a memo or something on all Dems who talk to the media and have interactions with the public (aka town halls). to use a few simple talking points. This is one of them.

Another would be to always refer to all Trumps, and Trump's admin and appointees, as corrupt, self-dealing or incompetent. Any time they mention a name, use one or more of these qualifiers. Donny Deutsch was right on that one.

Doesn't matter if the MAGAts will foam at the mouth that it's Librul propaganda. The trick is to always use the same consistent negative qualifiers. The Rethugs know this game very well and have been pros at it because it's very easy and simple. But it requires group discipline and aggressive posture which Dems need to fucking learn already.

that is what needs to be done, literally put corey and kellyanne and others in custody for refusing a subpoena wouldn't that happen to all of us?!....

we even have A ATTORNEY GENERAL WHOSE BEEN HELD IN CONTEMPT BY CONGRESS!..

SO MUCH FOR TRANSPARENCY IN THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY! everyone is "shifty", everyone ignores subpoena's, etc.

by Anonymousreply 433September 17, 2019 1:10 PM

(Sigh) The House of Representatives conducts an investigation, holds hearings, gathers evidence, etc. similar to a grand jury. Then it weighs all that evidence, and writes "Articles of Impeachment" Which is essentially charges against the POTUS.

Once those Articles of Impeachment are voted on in committee by a majority of committee members, they are brought before the House of Representatives. If the vote passes, the POTUS is charged. They need 218 votes for this. They do not have 218 votes at this time.

Then the Articles of Impeachment are delivered to the Senate which holds a trial presided over by the Chief Justice,. If the Senate convicts the POTUS of crimes, he is removed. He can then face federal charges or state charges, etc. The House needs 218 votes to Impeach. At this time they only have about 140. Pelosi is old school. She counts votes. She does not force people who are afraid of losing their seats to vote against what they beIieve are their interests.

If the House vote fails to impeach him, Trump can run around crowing about how he has been cleared, and this is politically motivated smears, etc. and the Republicans will have a huge club to pound the Democrats with in 2020. Now, please try to keep up.

by Anonymousreply 434September 17, 2019 1:44 PM

r422, Do YOU understand how impeachment works? Impeachment happens in the House and only the House. The trial, and whether the president is convicted and removed takes place in the Senate and only the Senate.

You need 218 votes in the House to impeach. You need two thirds of the Senate (67 votes) to convict in the Senate.

If 218 House members vote to impeach the president then he/she has been IMPEACHED. Impeachment is over at that point.

Now do YOU understand?

R433, Trump’s tax returns are in the hands of several third parties—accounting firms, Deutsche Bank—in addition to being held by the IRS. There are too many copies out there for anyone to risk altering them; that’s why he’s fighting their production. Also, I assume during the years he’s been married he’s filed jointly, so I guess his wives are on the hook if the returns were fraudulent.

by Anonymousreply 442September 17, 2019 3:19 PM

I still don't understand what we expect to learn from his tax returns. Wouldn't all of his shading dealings be in the Trump Organization's returns and not his personal returns?

by Anonymousreply 443September 17, 2019 3:24 PM

Absolutely r443. The only thing we will ever learn from his tax returns is the fact that he rarely, if ever, has paid any taxes.

by Anonymousreply 444September 17, 2019 3:27 PM

Not necessarily. He has falsified loan applications and tax returns to either inflate or deflate the value of certain properties or of his income off of certain ventures. So the opportunities for fraud are very great. He will eventually get busted for lying. And of course the money laundering. Because of the inflated price for which he bought or sold property to Russian oligarchs etc. He may believe he has insulated himself through various shell companies, but good forensic accounting will expose him and really they only need one such instance to establish a pattern. Because with one instance it is like pulling the proverbial thread that unravels everything else. And honestly someone ought to write a book investigating the history of Deustche Bank and that other "laundry" the Bank of Cyprus, where Wilbur Ross played such a key role. Ross is slime and his daughter married a Russian Oligarch. Follow the money is the very best advice Deep throat ever gave to anyone.

by Anonymousreply 445September 17, 2019 3:48 PM

[quote]He has falsified loan applications and tax returns to either inflate or deflate the value of certain properties or of his income off of certain ventures.

And how will that be revealed in his personal tax returns? The loans will not be in his name. The investments will be in holding companies. There is no balance sheet on an individual tax return.

I think that Trump is totally fine with our obsession with his tax returns. The idea that they will reveal much about his financial situation is our white whale.

by Anonymousreply 446September 17, 2019 4:08 PM

R446, I think what we’ve learned about his father’s tax returns, and the tax information that we do have about Trump, is that real estate owners often prefer to file consolidated returns so that they can balance phony “business losses” and other deductions against their personal income. In other words, Trump’s tax returns might be more revealing than most.

by Anonymousreply 451September 17, 2019 6:36 PM

I just re-read this, still with disbelief.

In his pitch, the president painted a dire picture of what Democrats' policies would lead to, arguing that with the Green New Deal, "the Democrats want to completely annihilate New Mexico's economy."

"The Democrats want us to be subservient to foreign producers. They want us to be at the mercy of rogue regimes. That is not happening anymore," Trump told the packed crowd at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

The president also defended Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh amid renewed allegations of sexual misconduct, slamming the media for its coverage and targeting Democrats for trying to "intimidate Americans into submission."

"They will do whatever they can to demean you, to libel you. They try to blacklist, coerce, cancel or destroy anyone who gets in their way," the president said. "Look at what they are doing today to Justice Kavanaugh. Look at what they are doing."

Trump blasted The New York Times for its coverage of the story, reiterating his tweet from earlier in the day where he called for everyone involved in the paper's Kavanaugh coverage to resign.

"I do not think they will do it, but they should, for the good of the nation," Trump said. "Did you see what Democrats -- they are calling for his resignation. They are calling for his impeachment."

Trump also touted his record with Hispanic Americans, some waving signs reading "Latinos for Trump," despite relentless calls to limit immigration at the southern border.

"We are working night and day to deliver a future of limitless opportunities for a nation and Hispanic American citizens, including millions and millions of extraordinary Mexican Americans, who enrich our society, strengthen our country, serve in our military and contribute immensely to our shared American family," Trump said.

In an awkward moment, the president also shouted out CNN contributor Steve Cortes, saying: "He happens to be Hispanic, but I have never quite figured it out because he looks more like a WASP (white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant) than I do."

Trump went on to ask Cortes if he loved "the country or the Hispanics" more. "He says, 'the country,'" the president said.

I think the general, uninformed public suffers from Trump fatigue. They hear about his outrageous behavior every day. They hear about his corruption, his deal making, his lies, etc.etc. every day. They have become inured to it. They aren't interested in impeachment hearings. And when a smug fucker like LEwandowski tells Congress to fuck off, the public kind of half-assed agrees with him. They are over it. IMO we need video. We need audio or something. Something. I want Michael Cohen's tapes to leak. because watching Nadler and the others and all the histrionics for the next few months isn't going to work. by Anonymousreply 467September 17, 2019 10:19 PM

R446 - fat Donnie's returns will show plenty of damning info.

First of all, every one of those shell companies is a "pass through" entity. They are all money laundering enterprises of one sort or another. And one of those "pass through" entities passes through to him personally.

Getting his personal tax returns will show many things. First is tax evasion. Second is falsifying loan applications (as Cohen pointed out). Third is money laundering.

You can probably find many more biggest of cons as well. His personal tax forms are only one piece of the puzzle.

One thing is for sure. The Media is spinning the shit out of today's hearing saying Corey LEwandowski made them look bad? WTF. First of all, LEwandowski's smug arrogant behavior made hi look bad. Like he is above it all. Rules don't matter. None of it has standing or legitimacy in his eyes. Now here's the thing. The House Dems already know no one is going to cooperate. They know this. So they need a fucking strategy to deal with that. If it includes jail time so be it. But when you have an asshole llike Lewandowski, then you need to go hard and make him look stupid. The Hill: Pelosi: Democrats will 'certainly' beat Trump in 2020

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is voicing optimism about Democrats' chances heading into the 2020 elections, predicting Tuesday that the party will keep the House, retake the presidency and "hopefully" flip the Senate.

Speaking with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Pelosi said that if her forecasts come to fruition, Democrats would have majorities in 2021 to shore up the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which President Trump and GOP leaders have fought for years to dismantle.

"When we win - I anticipate that we will win the House and hopefully win the Senate and certainly win the White House - but in the course of all of that, let's use our energy to have health care for all Americans," Pelosi said in the interview that aired Tuesday evening.

The comments came on the same day Rep. Paul Cook, a four-term California Republican, announced that he'll retire at the end of next year, making him at least the 17th GOP lawmaker to rule out a return to Congress in 2021.

The growing list of GOP retirements and resignations has complicated the Republicans' bid to retake the lower chamber, which they lost in last year's midterms, and suggests that even some GOP lawmakers consider the gavel out of reach.

Pelosi's other predictions are much less certain. While Senate Republicans are defending 23 seats in 2020 - versus just 12 for Democrats - very few of those GOP lawmakers are considered vulnerable, creating an uphill climb for Democrats hoping to flip the upper chamber.

L.A. Times: Newsom, Becerra lash out at Trump plan on California emissions standards

Ahead of Wednesday's press conference, Newsom responded to the president's claims on Twitter, calling them "simply inaccurate."

"Your standards will cost consumers $400 billion," Newsom said in a tweet. "Result in 320 billion more gallons of oil burned and spewed into our air. And hurt car companies' ability to compete in a global market. It's bad for our air. Bad for our health. Bad for our economy."

The Trump administration's action threatens to derail California's effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the next decade to a level

40%

below those recorded in 1990 — the primary driver behind that effort is

the state's goal to help ensure

more than 1 million zero-emission vehicles and plug-in hybrids are on the road by 2025.

"Our message to those who claim to support states' rights: Don't trample on ours," Becerra said Wednesday.

Why is Trump so obsessed with California right now? And I agree with others who view this homeless people roundup with great suspicion. Are they setting up Erstwhile Work Camps to squeeze every last bit of productivity they can from these people before showing them to the oven door?

It really just continues the entire Trump Administration’s playbook of attacking the most vulnerable people among us. Also, how could the government - Constitutionally - round up free, American citizens and place them in incarceration just for the simple “crime” of not having a home or employment? Is that really where they’d like to go? What about homeless war veterans? Can you even imagine?

Part of the homeless problem in CA started years ago when Reagan was governor. He closed the state hospitals and dumped fragile mentally people out in the streets and into halfway houses. Within weeks a recently ejected mentally ill person beat a neighborhood woman to death with a roller skate (in San Francisco)

The repukes keep yammering about "mental health" when it come to gun control but they aren't serious. Many homeless people are also mentally ill and have serious substance abuse problems. Our local jail are a rotating door for mentally ill homeless. No one on the right has any serious plans for addressing the mentally ill.

AP: Nancy Pelosi unveils an ambitious plan to lower drug prices

The plan is Pelosi's marker in what's shaping up as a high-stakes negotiation to determine if a drug pricing compromise can pass Congress this year or if Democrats and Republicans will take their differences into the 2020 elections.

The sweeping legislation leans left politically and appears to be tailor-made for Pelosi's Democratic majority in the House. But in a signal that Pelosi wants a deal, it also incorporates ideas from the Trump administration and from Republican and Democratic senators.

A group of House Republicans led by Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., quickly accused Pelosi of putting "politics over progress," calling her plan "a socialist proposal to appease her most extreme members."

Nonetheless, Americans across party lines say lowering prescription drug costs should be a top priority for Congress this year. Overall, 70 percent deemed that a top priority in a poll earlier this month from the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation
