I have a missive crush on Janeane Garofalo

I was always drawn to her as a kid, seeing her in Romy and Michelle’s and Mystery Men. I know she’s made a lot of claims as to why the offers dried up but there’s something so prototypically 90’s about her. I’d be curious to see what form that persona would take in a 2019 movie.

I'd like to recommend the podcast interview she did with Judy Gold--it's called Kill Me Now. It was a few years back, but she talks about the trouble she had with agents toying with her career. I find it hard to believe she's still cussing up a storm because she asks everyone on the podcast to stop.

I always admired her and thought she was such a badass, but before I heard the interview (half a dozen times now), I never had a sense of how fragile she is and the issues with self-esteem that she had.

I sometimes find Judy Gold a bit loud and grating, but the comics on her show talk a lot about the business, especially in the old days (the 90s). If you all have an interest, I would recommend her podcast.

Everyone talks about Garofalo's career being a train wreck; I think she had a great run. Most actresses hit the wall at about 40. She's still on the boards practicing her craft and being cast in the odd tv show. If she did more self-promotion--even starting today--she'd be getting more offers and jobs. She has said that she is shy and hates the social media thing (also she does not have a computer or smartphone, she says). I wish she would hire one of the gazillion students at NYU (or one of the colleges) to run her social media for her--she could do it for peanuts, and it would pay off.

I've only seen her in a few other things, and I'm sorry to say I didn't think they were a good fit for her. She is very good at a particular sort of role, though.

I met her more than 30 years ago when she was working at an art-house movie theater in Houston, where she went to high school and started her stand-up career at local comedy clubs.

I remember her as short and a bit overweight, but with beautiful skin and lovely jet-black hair. She looked luminous and was smart, funny and outgoing.

She was far from the anorexic-looking mess with dirty hair that she is today.
