NFL free agent Ryan Russel comes out as bisexual
by Anonymous | reply 352 | June 7, 2021 10:27 AM |
That couple pic is awful.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 29, 2019 6:55 PM |
I hope he deals with it all better than the Sam guy. He said that he writes. Maybe he could collaborate with Lena Waithe/Issa Rae or somebody to get a scripted TV show going based on his experiences.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 29, 2019 6:57 PM |
Seriously, based on that video, no one can tell me that anyone he knows was shocked.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 29, 2019 7:04 PM |
Bi? Nope.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 29, 2019 7:05 PM |
He's quite nice looking.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 29, 2019 9:01 PM |
Has he been picked up by any NFL team this season or does “free agent” here stand for retired?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 29, 2019 9:12 PM |
People on DL have some of the most ignorant perceptions about bisexuality of anyone on the planet.

He’ll never play in the NFL again after this.

“Bi” is just a stop on the bus to Homotown.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 29, 2019 9:37 PM |
Seems to be a pattern with these athlete coming out stories: "former" player; bi but not "gay"; black with a white boyfriend.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 29, 2019 9:54 PM |
Two instances is a pattern?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 29, 2019 9:56 PM |
Well Most athletes in sports people care about are black
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 29, 2019 9:56 PM |
I'm always puzzled when people feel some type of way about a black gay guy dating a white gay guy. In the US, black people make up something like 15% of the population. If you're gay on top of that... there are more white gays than black. It's not necessarily some self hating ish.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 29, 2019 9:57 PM |
Good for him
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 29, 2019 10:02 PM |
Hot masc with a cute face, his boyfriend on the other hand gross, he could do better, way better. Every time his boyfriend opens his mouth I see rainbows and unicorns with gucci purses.

And of course he has a white boyfriend - like all black gays desperate for white meat.

Kinda doesn't have the same impact when it's because he was going to be outed by a blogger. I guess these are early days, I don't think we are anywhere near gays being accepted in certain sports.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 1, 2019 8:10 PM |
That pic at R22 is very sexy to me. That couple must have great sex. Hot little bottom boy. Good for him. Hope he stays focused on career. Too many gays lose themselves in being out and gay and forget that the other mainstream things in life are possibly more important than living the gay life.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 1, 2019 8:18 PM |
He's a big one. 6'5" and about 270. Nice.

Watching Hard Knocks on HBO, it strikes me about how important it is for football players to mesh with the culture of the team. These guys bond with each other in a way that is reminiscent of a fraternity or the military. It’s not just the locker room, it’s also the clubhouse where they bond. Openly gay or bi players must be comfortable and naturally fit into this ultra masculine environment.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 1, 2019 8:46 PM |
R28 - think that’s why there are so few out players and why it can be tough to continue for the ones who do come out. But the military figured it out - so pro sports should be able to also.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 1, 2019 8:52 PM |
True, the military is a good model to follow as are some fraternities. There needs to be a paradigm change that recognizes that gay and bi men can be just as athletic, just as physically tough, just as Alpha as heterosexual men. The seven openly bi and gay men playing college football are gradually paving the way for gay/bi NFL players.

I love these bi-sexual soft introductions. Why do they always seem to end up with same sex lovers? Funny how that works. Maybe he meant he's 100% gay but only has sex with men bi-weekly.

It's not the Black women who are unhappy, but the Black queens are quite disturbed and highly displeased;
-I’m starting to feel like the whole black men dating white women in favor of black women also applies to gay men cause....................................yeah.
-All these black guys who come out as either bi or gay are dating white guys?
-So a black NFL player just came out as an openly bisexual man, reveals his relationship on Instagram, and his man is white. Do black gay/bisexual men with money, power, or celebrity status date black AT ALL? Genuinely curious, because the answer seems to be no.
-Having the white partner ruined the entire moment.
- Ahmad K. Khan, PhD @AhmadKhalilDC: Wanted to be excited that Ryan Russell came out as bisexual. As a proud Black, East Asian, and Caribbean bi dude I was happy that another person of color had broken down that wall but alas, you guessed it, his partner is white. This shit is sick and an epidemic at this point. 🤮
-These NFL players are really something. I went to look up Ryan Russell and guess what? His boyfriend is white
-I have no problem with Ryan Russell being bi but he wild for being with a white man
-Of course Ryan Russell dates white men 🙄
-If another Black man comes out as gay or bisexual and dating a white man, I’m going to be so... not surprised.
-Is that any gay black pop stars who aren’t dating white men?

What this is about too is the "come up." You have those men who want to be taken care of--and, I don't mean that in a bad way, and appear on next season's new reality show "NFL Husbands"
Does anyone remember the show the "A-List?" If so, do you remember that one of the husbands was a very wealthy Black guy, but his husband was.... white! There's just LOTS of dynamics that go with this.

But the disproportionately high incidences of famous, visible blacks dating outside a race is only not a coincidence, but reveals the person a self-hating type of n... person. Hence the hate. Hmm... a lot to unpack there, R79. I'm not disagreeing with you but would like to add on;
[quote]An overwhelming majority of black people prefer to date other black people.
Is a reason that this exist is because black people are taught directly/indirectly to not trust white people? For the longest in this country it could mean a matter of life and death!
[quote]But the disproportionately high incidences of famous, visible blacks dating outside a race is only not a coincidence, but reveals the person a self-hating type of n... person.
I agree. But, it could also mean security, acceptance by society as whole, or the acquisition of a trophy. I recall a quote by Lena Horne explaining why she married her white husband. She did eventually love him but she was straight up and admitted that she married him for security and acceptance.
[quote]He'll get zero support from the black community from now on.
Would he have ever? Still to this very day, homosexuality exists in other communities but NEVER in the Black community (LOL!) This is just another reason why blacks will date whites (or other ethnicities) We're not fully accepted within our own race.
[quote] his coming out will also have no effect on the community as he'll be dismissed by many because of his choice of partner.

It REALLY depends. A black person that steps on the black community toes is usually banished and never heard from again. Just look at that gal, Chrisette Michele, who sang at Trump's inaugural for that check. The people told her; "Sis, you DON'T want to do this." But, she felt that Hermès purse had her name on it and she went ahead and did the gig. Uh-huh... she's been crying ever since.
OJ Simpson hasn't been welcomed back with open arms. Don't think that because we helped him get off that he was welcomed back at the Bar-B-Q.

There's much truth in what you wrote R112. But, it goes much deeper. The following are brush strokes, but who doesn't want the white man? But, there are many who don't want black and that just further feeds into that inferiority complex. Now, what's interesting too, is that many blacks don't feel that other minorities go through this too ie Asian, Latino. These people DO NOT consider themselves as white and will talk about the prejudices and racism that they face too. But, many blacks will view these people as white. It's all about the colorism.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | September 2, 2019 11:58 AM |
R114, why doubt! It’s a common truth those who try to sound holier than though usually are hiding a secret. The lashing out is due to jealousy usually.
I went to HS with this super liberal fat queer black man. He was always giving a speech about how evil white men (especially gay ones) are, and he’d also give lectures about the evils of capitalism. Anyway fast forward 10 years into the future, he landed an amazing job and started making over 100k. After that he became obsessed with capitalism and dating white boys. I wouldn’t be surprised if his super liberal ass eventually becomes a republican too.
He bashes the popular kids cause they didn’t want him but once they did, he ditched it all to sit at the cool kids table.
People who go out of their ways to protest others sex life are always hiding some secret.

by Anonymous | reply 120 | September 2, 2019 12:10 PM |
I don't know about that, R120. In my opinion, these are discussions which needed to be had. While many don't feel as I do, I feel that race relations have actually improved in the USA and that is because the younger kids couldn't care less (they weren't reared with all of the baggage), and also because these type of conversations are beginning to come out from the darkness.

R122, there are plenty of racist and bigoted Youth people still today, as trending story after trending story attests.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | September 2, 2019 2:45 PM |
I think some of you place too much meaning on race in this instance. Dating is complicated and, yes, it's driven by attraction, but quite frankly the things you have in common and the way that person makes you feel plays a bigger role than anything else - even attraction. Black people who get upset when a famous black person dates outside of their race are just as silly and racist as the white people who do it. No one should ever be put on trial and forced to defend who they want to be with.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | September 2, 2019 2:54 PM |
Whoa... let's put a handle on that, Helen.
First of all, Blacks in the USA can't be racists. Can they be bigots? ABSOLUTELY! But racism and bigotry are two different things. Black people in no way control all of the institutions of these here United States and cannot systematically discriminate against any other race.
Although, I do see your point, unfortunately this "All we are saying is give peace a chance" type of attitude will not happen overnight. Again... there are generations upon generations and hundreds upon hundreds of years all wrapped up in all of this stuff. HECK! Slavery is ONLY 3-4 generations out. There are some of our grandparents (who are still living) that KNEW their grandparents personally and also knew that they were born in slavery, etc.
Is it getting better? YES! But, we still have a long road ahead of us. Each generation gets better. Of course there are still racists and bigots today, R122. Those who are in power ain't gonna give up the ghost without vigilantly and aggressively trying to maintain control. But, the numbers are getting smaller. The recruits are becoming less and less. Eventually, (and we might not live to see it), it will go away.
You're right, R123. A person should never have to be put on trial and forced to defend who they want to be with. But, it's a reality. People (minorities) are with others and may not consciously realize why they are with them. It could be genuine love. Or.... How would you have liked to have been Lena Horne's white husband and learn that she did not marry you for love, (although she learned to love him), but married you for security and acceptance into the white world?

Once he has the job he can then go back to publicly dating women without backlash because he came out as bi to begin with. No idea if any of this is true.

The two may have a real relationship but they probably went public with their coupling in order to get their names on the map. I read somewhere that Russell wants to be a writer and the snow bunny is a cruise ship dancer. I've never heard of either of them before (note: that doesn't mean anything) but now that their names are out in the public they will get interviews, Google listings, and maybe better job opportunities for their chosen fields. Football doesn't last forever and this guy might go the way of Michael Sam. However, if he has some writing talent maybe someone might give him a job because of all of this. Snow bunny might get better dancing offers. We shall see...

I found both of the films engaging and the writing was okay. I guess these people can't get anywhere because I didn't pay to see them. LOL! I saw them for free on YouTube. OH! The one thing that I really applaud about Ryan Russell's coming out is that it is another black man that has come out of the closet. The black community, like it or not, (and it will be a BIG not), will eventually have to accept that there are GAYS within the black community. They're going to have to have to reconcile their religious beliefs with this in sort of way. Let them call on Jesus to help them make it through. But, accept it they will.
Hopefully, this will manifest itself into black men taking better care and responsibility for themselves. This OFF-OF-THE-CHARTS HIV infection and AIDS levels/rates have got to be ended! I don't date black men. All I see is HIV, HIV, HIV! And, if you're a black male from Atlanta I'd require a hazmat suit before I would have you anywhere near me.

by Anonymous | reply 171 | September 3, 2019 1:01 PM |
R171, there are degrees of hatred and bias. Both empirical studies and common experience reveal that although many homophobes generally dislike or oppose homosexuality, many Antigay people especially dislike gays who are obviously gender nonconformist. Transgender people make up a huge percentage of LGBT hate crimes despite being a tiny portion of the community. Why? Because gender nonconformity especially triggers homophobic people, sometimes to violence. Likewise, Antigay crimes are disproportionately focused on men perceived to be effeminate. Even Antigay slurs are largely about accusing men of being unmanly or girly, from “fairy” to “sissy” to “flamer.” “Faggot” is largely used to mean a male is girly or effeminate in demeanor or interests. It’s clear that effeminate gay men are treated much worse than masculine bi and gay men, and I’ve heard countless effeminate men affirm this.

Nah, r175, the initial point was about non-femme black gays coming out improving things "for all of us", which is bullshit. Go to LSA, the homophobia isn't all centred around purses falling out of mouths. Homophobes abhor men who like dick.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | September 3, 2019 2:01 PM |
R177, that’s an exceedingly general and sweeping statements. Homophobia has many roots and justifications, and it depends upon individual views. Studies have confirmed (and common sense tells you) that gay men who are effeminate have it much worse than masculine gay men. All gay men suffer from a general, pervasive bias against same-sex erotic activity, but effeminate gay men especially do.

Study: We examined whether, due to men’s desire to reject stereotypically feminine traits in themselves, a masculinity threat would elicit negative affect toward effeminate, but not masculine gay men. Fifty-three male undergraduates from the United States received bogus feedback that they had either a “masculine” or “feminine” personality before rating affect toward two “types” of gay men: effeminate and masculine. Results were consistent with the notion that defensive reactions target groups stereotyped as having the specific traits perceivers wish to deny in themselves: masculinity threat selectively increased negative affect toward effeminate, but not masculine, gay men. Thus, gay men who exhibit feminine traits may be at particular risk from men whose masculinity is threatened.

Antifem Bias for straight-identified men sometimes is a conflicted reaction to their attraction to feminine aspects in a male. We know that many transgender women have been murdered or assaulted after having sex or relationships with straight-identified men. A lot of straight men recoil at the idea that they might be attracted to a fem male and seek to lash out in an attempt to snuff out the uncomfortable attraction. While straight or macho Guys may secretly mess Around with fem guys, very few are open about it.

I think some of you use black homophobia to justify your own issues with black people. Yes, some black people are homophobic and it sucks. But you know what, I never see black people in power introducing legislation that limits our rights. I know that most black people vote democratic, so they aren't voting against us. I know that South Bend, Indiana, a predominantly black city, voted for Mayor Pete -- a gay white man.
Some of you love to point out black homophobia, while never mentioning who the real (and more destructive and dangerous) homophobes really are. And lets not even start with how colonialism and white missionaries brought their homophobia to the islands and other majority black areas around the globe.
Black people know there are black gay men and women. They've known it forever and they've dealt with it. And if there have been problems, it comes from religion or fear or the addition of one more burden to bare on a life already having to deal with hate and oppression.
I don't excuse anyone's homophobia. It's all bad, no matter who is doing the hating.

And who is killing black trans women? Is it the evil white men? Nah, most are being killed by black men.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | September 3, 2019 4:07 PM |
R197, with all due respect, I think that you are being disingenuous here. A result of the Black community not coming to terms with homosexuality are some outcomes cited by R198. Or, my own reasons for not dating black men. I'm not homophobic. Susan Hayward said it best; "I WANT TO LIVE!"
Now, I'm not dismissing the possible genuine attraction that this young man holds for the snow bun... the Carnival Cruise Line dancer, but there can be other stuff all wrapped up with that too. That could be; The general non-acceptance of gays within the Black community; his own prejudices and fears, etc.
Some Wikipedia passages that are relevant to this discussion;
Homophobia in ethnic minority communities--Black community
Homophobia is considered prevalent within the African American community. Numerous reasons are given for this, including the image young black males are supposed to convey in the public sphere; that homosexuality is seen as antithetical to being black in the African American community; and the association of the African American community with the church in the United States. African Americans in general tend to have more homophobic beliefs than the rest of the country. More black Americans support the idea that queer people should be condemned, or that AIDS is an acceptable punishment for gay people. Some believe this to be attributable to the effect that conservative church going has on African Americans.
Homophobia and the Black Church
This history between the black church and slaves, has created this indelible bond between black American’s and the Black church. The values preached within the black church tend to be socially conservative, with the exclusion of how the church addresses the homeless. However, when it comes to the home, traditional family values prevail. Maintaining a nuclear family, with a man as the main provider, and a woman as the staple of the house, still represent predominant values within the black church. Heterosexuality is seen as the only acceptable standard, while homosexuality is seen as condemnable by God.
Homophobia and AIDS in the Black Community
The disproportionately high incidence of HIV/AIDS amongst African Americans is attributed to homophobic attitudes. Black communities associate the disease almost exclusively with gay (white) men and not their own community. Many still view HIV/AIDS as a gay disease, and homophobia is one of the main barriers preventing better treatment for people with AIDS inside the community. Irene Monroe of the Huffington Post wrote: "while nearly 600,000 African Americans are living with HIV, and as many 30,000 newly infected each year, there is still within the black community one in five living with HIV and unaware of their infection; and, they are disproportionately heterosexuals. As long as we continue to think of HIV/AIDS as a gay disease, we'll not protect ourselves from this epidemic." There is a direct link between homophobia and AIDS in the black community. The more homophobia that one experiences, as an LGB person, the more likely they are to engage in unprotected anal intercourse. Additionally, studies have found that the more likely one is to engage in risky sex if they more strongly identify with their sexuality and their race.

That Wikipedia article is exaggerating. No community with the high level of fornication, extramarital sex, out of wedlock pregnancies, filthy urban music, and vulgar language often seen in the African-American community can be considered socially conservative.

[quote]Are you really that stupid? Who the fuck is coming up w anti gay laws in Africa?
Virtually all anti-sodomy laws in many African countries were inherited from British colonial law upon independence from the UK in the '60s. The Africans didn't come up with those laws themselves.

R210, so because a bunch of white men said homosexuality was bad in colonial times that excuses homophobia amongst black people?
Are you saying black people can’t think for themselves? Do you really think that lowly of them that you blame all their problems on colonial times? Are you saying black people are so dumb that they need to be taught to think by white men? Are you saying since that they formed all their habits based on white people?

[quote]Hence why so many black gay boys think transitioning is the answer.
Hmm... Or, maybe there are not enough gay masculine black male role models that they see, and they feel that becoming a woman as close as possible is the only option? By no means, am I putting down the effeminate gay black male, (you are what you are), but even they, for the most part, want no part of any man that has even a hint of femininity. THEY WANT A MAN!

That there's no wiggle room in hypermasculine minority communities about this, where any man that's perceived as less than masculine must mean that they should be a "woman", is very painful.

Bisexual Visibility Month???? Who knew?
Bisexual Visibility Month Celebrates an Exodus from the Bi-Closet
Just in time for Bisexual Visibility Month, NFL free agent Ryan Russell came out as bisexual. According to the many articles published in the Washington Blade, Sports Illustrated and elsewhere, his duel nature had always been a source of personal conflict. His coming out was a typical journey from self-repression to self-acceptance. Russell’s story also reveals the isolation and stigma faced by those whose sexual identify strays beyond accepted norms.
Professional sports are still largely unwelcoming for LGBTQs. While footballer Russell’s macho image reflected the requisite hyper-heterosexual persona, his interest in men would certainly have undermined his professional career. In fact, Russell cited an instance in which a sports blogger discovered him dating a man and the lengths to which he went to stop the blogger from publicizing the affair. The upside of that near scandal was it prompted him to come out. Such stories of celebrities and common folk defying their fears have been in the news of late. Attesting to their frequency are the many websites, social media pages and YouTube videos with tips and advice that appear under such obvious titles as “How to come out as bisexual.”
Here in Cream City, local activists Amy Luettgen and Sarah Wallisch created Bi+ Pride Milwaukee in 2014. Its mission statement states that it was formed “to create a sustainable social community for non-monosexual individuals (and their partners and allies) in the Milwaukee metropolitan area.” Broadly inclusive beyond bisexuals, it embraces a spectrum of marginalized sexual identities: pansexuals, omnisexuals, queers and unlabeled. The group meets regularly at various venues throughout the city and holds a variety of bi-focused events.
‘We Are Everywhere’
Bi+ Pride’s strategy focuses on bisexual myth busting and increasing visibility of Bi+ people to attain not only greater acceptance but also to allow others of similar inclination to find support. In recent years, the group has raised its profile through social media, marching under the pink, blue and lavender bisexual, flag in the Pride Parade and participating in PrideFest as well as year-round activism and advocacy. The next Bi+ Pride Happy Hour, its special Bi Visibility Month edition, takes place on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Bi+ Pride also hosts a discussion group at the LGBT Community Center. It meets on the third Thursday of each month. It is also celebrating Bi Visibility Month with an “extra fabulous” Bisexuali-Tea at the Center on Saturday, Sept. 28. All events are open to community members, partners and allies.
The expanded outreach has increased the organization’s numbers and garnered community recognition. Asked about the current state of bi-visibility, Luettgen remarked, “We are a very diverse and inclusive group. We are the queer majority, and we are everywhere. We are the people who define our non-monosexuality. Never assume our sexuality is based on our partner’s gender. Many trans, non-binary, genderqueer and no-gender individuals are Bi+. Bi-phobia has kept many folks closeted, but now they are seeing themselves represented for the first time.”

One of my best guy friends, whom is white... Told me that he would rather be black than be gay. Meaning, he'd rather be discriminated against, pulled over by the police, judged simply by his color, assumed he's lazy and everything else that comes along with being black. He loves himself but the treatment he received from his dad was just horrible. Sooo....

He's a victim of a racist white society that has brain washed Black people into believing that a White person is the ideal mate or that white light skin and European features are more attractive than dark skin and African features. Think about it. If this wasn't so if all things were equal you would see just as many white athletes or movie stars with Black mates as the other way around. I know most of you aren't sports fans but if you watched something like the NFL draft half the Black football players have white girlfriends but none of the White football players do.
If you grow up in a place where everything that is supposed to represent beauty, magazines, TV shows, movies etc and almost all of the people in leadership positions, most of the people with money, history books. the list goes on and on. That is going to effect your image of yourself and people who look like you.

Look... having a "White" on your arm gives you entry to experiences and places that the Negroes are still not found suitable for. When a Negro gets themselves a good piece of money that person wants to improve their station in life. It's about acceptance to a lifestyle that they are normally shut out of. Besides... what do the Negroes know about landscaping (other than doing as instructed), interior design, art, proper place settings, antiques, luxury goods (it's not called "bling", y'all), etc. The few that do know a little something.... what was the Negress's name? OH! Barbara Smith (AKA: B. Smith) can move a little higher up the scale of acceptable society but even she was limited. Take note, that when B. Smith started to go a bit looney that her husband (who would inherit all of the money) did the proper thing and went out and found him a white girl! This is just the way things are.

R269, I have to disagree with you. It’s ludicrous to say that black people seek out whites because that's who they see in positions of power and in media. Blacks have dominated popular culture, especially sports and music, for decades. They are known to be cooler than white people. Even in African countries many use lightening creams, are you going to say that’s because of western culture? Whatever the reason successful blacks seek out non black partners has to be addressed from within their community first. FYI, in real life blacks are usually partnered with other blacks.

Of course Black people have a large influence over culture but having an influence over a culture is not in and of itself that culture. American culture is still white, whiteness.
Let me make clear that a person has a right to chose any partner they want without ridicule. I'm just curious as to why certain groups of people in the larger context chose certain things and other groups of people don't. Isn't that what anthropology is all about?

There actually could be a lot of truth to that, R307. I've been joking and playing around (R293) but there are far too many who think like this. And, let's give some of them the benefit of doubt that it as not as much about racism per se but more about practicality and survival. I'm thinking about a recent report regarding the "Tamron Hall Show" where an Executive Producer (or, someone very high up) let it be known to Public Relations people NOT to pitch their African American clients to the show because it is NOT a "Black" show.
Also, I remember talking to the late and great Earle Graves (founder and publisher of "Black Enterprise" magazine) who spoke of the difficulty in finding advertisers. He approached Mercedes Benz who declined to advertise in the publication because they did not want the car to become known as a "Black" car.
Those are just two very recent examples of how racism is soooo ingrained and systemic in our society. But, let me point out that things are indeed changing BUT there is still lots of work to do!
by Anonymous | reply 309 | May 30, 2021 10:56 AM |
Dating whites gets them elevated status. It opens so many more doors and makes them seem more accessible. Now whether this particular black man is doing it consciously or unconsciously that’s something I don’t know.
by Anonymous | reply 310 | May 30, 2021 12:14 PM |
r306 I've heard black men and women say the availability of potential black partners/mates is extremely limited once you reach a certain level of success. That's if you are looking to meet someone organically. Unless they are willing to put in extra work seek out someone of the same race it generally won't happen...
But I think for gay black men in particular there is more to it. There has got to be some deep sociological reasoning for gay black men not partnering with each other. Even gay black men who aren't wealthy have a hard time having lasting relationships with other black men. Steve Lacy really sent me when he said he doesn't date other black men because he views them as brothers? Brother, it's got to be more than that. Jussie Smollet was with the Africans who are about as culturally different from black Americans as white people.
by Anonymous | reply 312 | June 1, 2021 4:08 AM |
The vast majority of partnered gay black men I know are with other black men. This includes a wide socioeconomic spectrum ranging from blue collar to real estate to tech and finance. The so-called “dating out” phenomenon decried by some black women and gays is so, so overblown and not borne out by statistics.
by Anonymous | reply 313 | June 1, 2021 4:31 AM |
Well r313 the phenomenon must be limited to gay black men who are celebrities because of most of them for damn sure do not have black partners.

[quote]But I think for gay black men in particular there is more to it. There has got to be some deep sociological reasoning for gay black men not partnering with each other.
It's very complex and complicated. IMHO, it still all boils down to racism and self-esteem. There are many Black folks who hate that they are Black whether they know it consciously, or it is subconscious. The Black race has been conditioned (because of systemic racism) to hate themselves. Then you have religion. For those who are not Black, it will be very hard for you to imagine the immense pressure that a gay Black man face because of religion. It's amazing (or not, because of religion) that the suicide rate among gay Black males isn't higher.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | June 1, 2021 9:14 AM |
r315 I also think a lot of black gay men have broken, strained or non existent relationships with their fathers as well which shapes their treatment of other men. A lot of them also witness how black men treat their mothers as well which profoundly affects how they view other black men.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | June 1, 2021 1:40 PM |

[quote]I’d like to hear from a black man as to the reasons why they don’t partner with other black men. This is actually a very interesting occurrence and I’ve never seen articles written about it. At least give me YOUR personal reasons for not dating another black man
May I humbly suggest that you write something about the subject from your perspective? I agree with you that there aren't many articles and/or resources that tackle this subject whether it be homosexual or heterosexual. It's a very complex issue with many layers of mess! I believe that it should be discussed much more. Here's a possible resource for you though--if you can find it... It was a book written by Lawrence Otis Graham (wow! I can't believe this guy is dead--59 years old) and it was titled; "Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class" (1999).
Some of this (or most of it) might simply be economics. Let's say you're one of Ken Chenault's sons. Ken was the third African-American to head a Fortune 500 company (American Express) and therefore you have an idea of the lifestyle that he provided for himself and his family. Okay... how many African-Americans do you think that you would meet who could identify and relate to your upbringing and lifestyle versus those who are white?

On TV shows and commercials, you only see Black/White gay couples, never same race.
by Anonymous | reply 320 | June 2, 2021 1:42 PM |
IMHO R320, we will have a way to go before you see a gay Black couple on TV shows and especially for commercials. It's still about that "Gimme that ole time 'ligion" I'm sure Madison Ave has done a number of focus groups and that coupling isn't going over too well. However, the interracial couples are testing well and breaking down barriers, IMHO.

Ive only seen two gay black couples in commercials, one is below for HIV drugs.
The other was the cute Etsy Christmas commercial from last year. My mind was blown at the Etsy commercial because its the first time Ive seen a gay black couple in an ad that's not for HIV meds.

Economics is no excuse, that's not the reason these guys don't have black partners and there are plenty of rich Black people who are coupled up.
Not all interracial couples are created equally some people just happen to meet and fall in love and there are others who absolutely will not date a Black person because they aren't attracted to people who are Black.

Disagree.
[quote]The estimated median wealth of black households is $36,000, while white households estimated their parents' median wealth at $150,000. African-Americans, who were historically denied access to housing wealth, face a substantial wealth disparity compared to whites.
[quote]Among the nation's wealthiest Americans -- known as the Top 1% -- only a very small percentage are black. To gain membership into this elite group in 2013, it required a household net worth of nearly $7.9 million, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. And only 1.7% of those who met that mark are black.
Economics definitely is a factor for many. Even the Bible (going back to that "ole time 'ligion) speaks of it. That unequal yoke stuff...

r325 get the fuck out! Economics is a bullshit excuse. People like what they like and there are a million ways to find someone you like no matter what there income is.

Ok r325 I just went to this guys social media and every non Blue check marked guy he follows is White. Meaning all his thrist follows are white guys. This isn't about economics, he's a snow Queen plain and simple.

R327 - “He’s a snow queen, plain and simple.”
Every gay black man I’ve ever known is a “snow queen,” as you described. I think that’s a derogatory term though. They just prefer white men for long term relationships. There’s stability and hope for a better future with that path. Think about the childhood many gay black men endured (absentee father, abuse, neglect, little to no money, government assistance, etc.) and you can’t help but think they are determined to find a way out.
by Anonymous | reply 328 | June 4, 2021 5:48 PM |
r328 Do you even realize how racist you sound? You really think White people are more stable than Black people or any other ethnic or racial group? LOL But thank you for proving my point most Black men who exclusively date white men or white women are in fact white supremacists themselves.

A lot of gay brothers only want to deal with very masculine guys, who are still on the downlow and have a kid or 2. If that's the only type of man that turns you on, then yes single life will be it for you. Not that anything is wrong with being single, but since we are on the subject of gay black coupling. Those type dudes are not relationship material. So its no wonder why so many attractive gay black men can't find a boyfriend who is also black.

To this point, I also think that gay black men may go for white guys because they feel they can dominate a white guy much more easily than they can another black guy. I think white guys in general tend to be more submissive, which turns black guys on because we tend to have a more assertive personality (and will usually be the top in the bedroom). Not saying this is the case across the board (relationships are different for everybody, of course) but I do feel it has something to do with why some black men end up with white partners.

He is VERY handsome, and his boyfriend is very cute as well. They make a lovely couple.
I couldn't care any less about football and I won't care in the future, but I guess that this is a positive turn of events for sports.

Geez-Louise! Where do some of you guys hang out? And, who with R334 and R331?
Have you ever heard the idiom; "You attract who you are"? Basically it means that what you attract is a re-affirmation of what you believe. Your belief might have been influenced by past negative experiences that continue to stay with you for a while even after the relationship has ended and act as a lens that you see the world through.
by Anonymous | reply 336 | June 5, 2021 1:02 PM |
R336 - I agree with many of your points, as well as R334 and R331. The bottom line is, whether we like or agree or not, if a successful black man has an attractive white man at his side, he will receive more attention, higher status, greater career potential, and probably more income. Hopefully one day these tropes will no longer apply, but in 2021, they still do.
by Anonymous | reply 337 | June 5, 2021 1:28 PM |
R336 im just calling it like i see it. So many spend their youth chasing after trade, after you get tired of that (yes you will get to point where youve had enough) yes most guys do expand their dating pool to include white men. Its all good. To me its more just numbers. Gay men are still very much the minority and the group of black gay men is even smaller. So after some time you start exploring other options.

[quote] The bottom line is, whether we like or agree or not, if a successful black man has an attractive white man at his side, he will receive more attention, higher status, greater career potential, and probably more income.
Unfortunately, I would have to agree, R337. I think what is needed are more role models of successful Black gay men in long term relationships with other successful gay Black men, and... I don't mean just the sports stars and/or other celebrities. Also, I don't mean (alright y'all... I'm ready to be slapped silly but many of y'all know what I mean) the Black couple where one of the partners is EXTREMELY effeminate while the other is the masculine, dominant bull--even though that one is the 100% bottom. Let's be clear there is not a thing wrong with being a bottom. But oh.... the stereotypes. The stereotypes...
Once again... I come back to that "ole time 'ligion" theme. Maybe it's just me but I don't believe that many outside of the Black race understand how powerful but extremely debilitating religion has been for many Black gay men. Another possible fact about why some Black men will not date other Black men is because A LOT of Black men are afraid to admit to their true sexuality. Let's look at the stereotypes again; How does any Black women (in her right mind) believe that her Black man, that went to prison when he was 28 and released when he is 45 is fully straight? Of course, anything is possible but I would think that one of the early on conversations would happen as follow;
"Hi honey. Welcome home! Who did you fuck or who fucked you?"
White gay men (and, this is great for them but unfortunate for the rest of us--especially for Black gay men) can be more open about their sexuality and live their truth. They will only lose but so much. They always had, ( and will have), the opportunity to regain whatever back and/or possibly more. While many things are indeed changing, there is still A LOT of work to do! The Black gay man still faces complete (and I mean COMPLETE) devastation in admitting that they are gay. If it's a long-term relationship ie marriage, it only becomes worse.
I don't know how many of us are following and participating in this thread but I find it quite interesting and useful. Hopefully more people will weigh in with their thoughts and opinions.

For what it's worth, it's not just gay black men who go outside the race for partners: Wanda Sykes and Robin Roberts are both married to white women.
by Anonymous | reply 340 | June 5, 2021 7:47 PM |
Probably the same issues and dynamics, R340. That's sort of become the topic from a topline perspective; Why aren't other Black people getting a piece of that wealth?

Being a snow Queen has nothing to do with economics or the this mythcal lack of partner availability. It's 100% has to do with racism
The simplest explanations are usually the best.
by Anonymous | reply 346 | June 6, 2021 6:33 PM |
R346 - Absolutely agree. There are many more gay black racists then gay white racists. They just don’t get called out like the whites do.
by Anonymous | reply 347 | June 6, 2021 9:25 PM |
There aren't more Black gay racists than White but there are a disproportionate amount relative to the size of the community. It's a product of growing up in a racist society.

[quote] People like what they like and there are a million ways to find someone you like no matter what there income is.
There are a ton of reasons why this happens. A lot of them have been discussed here but income can and often does play a role in many couplings straight or gay.
That being said sometimes it really is because the person asked them out. Robin Roberts was set up on a date.
Wanda met her wife on a Fire Island cruise because Wanda was in a position where she could go to Fire Island and be on a cruise.
These two said they met on an app and got along and from what I've read about them it seems like it worked out partially because they were both willing to potentially spend time apart. That doesn't happen in every coupling.
Sometimes it's even environmental or situational. If you went to a university where the overwhelming majority of the population is white, then you might end up having that be a significant part of your dating pool.
Sometimes someone will exclusively date people of a certain race other their own and that's when you can say, okay this person might be a snow queen. I think the problem is, you can't really say that unless you have a clear idea of their dating history. When that does happen, however, there's some self hate there that this person needs to address.

No such thing. In this country (USA) people of color can never be racists. At no time in the history of this nation thus far, have people of color been able to subjugate another race to second class citizenry, discriminate, restrict civil rights, etc. Now, can people of color be bigots? ABSOLUTELY! But, racists? No.

And with income comes the lifestyle that an individual is accustomed to, reared in, learned to value whatever values, etc. Here's a sweeping generalization but I'm using it just to illustrate a point; If I'm a Black person that grew up listening, learning, and liking, only hard rock music then the likelihood of my embracing gangsta rap is very minimal.
