Amy Sedaris: what is wrong with her?

I really wanted to like her new show but I couldn’t get into it. I felt like it was trying too hard to be quirky.

She’s not near as funny as she used to be and it seems like she’ll do anything for a dollar.

She looks good.

She was hilarious on Kimmie Schmidt.

Strangers With Candy was fucking brilliant. She was awesome as were the rest of the cast. I can't get into her new show. She also seems incredibly weird and kind of mean spirited.

I adore this woman and everything she does.

If you've read her brother's stuff, their mother was absolutely batshit so that's where Amy gets it from.

I love her. Once, I was scolded in the NYPLibrary for laughing while reading her book on entertaining, which included things like: How to get urine stains out of a sofa and Appetizer ideas: Take a chewed Ritz Cracker from the roof of your mouth and place it on a fresh Ritz Cracker. I love David too. Love or hate, you have to give them both credit for putting themselves out there.

On her new show she was teaching about fish: "If you're like me, you were probably surprised to find out that there are more types of fish besides the 3 you already know; fried, sticked and gefilted.

She's a creative genius. Not all of her ideas are good, but they are certainly inspired.

She’s brilliantly hilarious and I love her.

I love her. She’s got a very odd style of humor but it works for me. She was a genius in Strangers with Candy.

She is hyperactive but isn't that part of her schtick. I can watch clips of her on youtube but could never watch a full show of hers. Should stick to guest star and appearances.

I've always found both Amy and David to be unappealing and strangely hostile in situations that don't call for it. People seem to really like that kind of thing, but I guess my own personal preference is when someone is hostile to the deserving, not just to whoever happens to be nearby.

She was smart not to have a baby.

She makes the world interesting and surprising. What's not to like?

LOVE Strangers with Candy, so she'll always have a special place in my heart for Jerri Blank (who I still quote daily). And her appearance on Broad City as the injured realtor is hysterically funny too. She's great in small doses like that.

But I do think she comes across kind of tryhard and narcissistic. A bit too high-energy and yes, hostile. I remember reading David's book 'Naked' and there were really long passages about how everyone in his family was so funny and so good looking, and they all knew they were good looking growing up. I feel like that air of arrogance shows through a lot with her, on her Letterman appearances, on her new show, and in certain acting projects where she is BEYOND hammy even when the role doesn't call for it.

All her little quirky zany projects have become eyeroll worthy to me (she's like a Wes Anderson film on steroids), and she has a habit of motormouth speaking over her guests (or when she's on someone else's show, her hosts).

My sense is that she has become so full of herself that she thinks she does not need a third eye. Her new show if full of great ideas that never quite work. I suspect the problem is that there is no real director to take it to the next level or edit out the stuff that just does not work and is never going to work. She is probably the type that thinks the hit and miss quality is what makes the show "authentic". Actually, it is what makes the show not quite work.

She keeps rabbits as pets because even dogs and cats can't stand her.

I know^ It's such a weird thread. Of all the people in the world to wonder about and diagnose. I think OP is a rejected writer (Dust Motes) who resents their success. These guys have made me laugh 100's of times. That's good enough for me.

Love Amy's new show, which really found it's footing in the second season. It's not serialized (there's some continuity with stuff carried forward, but not serialization) so you could start watching with the better second season. It got a couple Emmy nods.

She has this air of 'slightly unhinged' that I see in a bunch of other comic/comic actors. Some examples are: Robin Williams, Jonathan Winters, Jim Carrey, a bunch of SNL folk like Will Ferrell, Kristin Wiig and Cheri Oteri. All of them seem to be on the knife edge of snapping. If I read that any of these people had been picked up off the street and were currently sedated for their safety, I wouldn't be surprised.

I think she is fantastic...Strangers With Candy, Bojack, and At Home with Amy Sedaris are all great. I thought her character on Kimmie Schmidt was annoying but she was supposed to be. She has a dry with that I really appreciate.

Give me a fucking break. They weren't ugly, but GOOD LOOKING? Hmm. Okay... They do all tan very well and have good skin.

But I will never look at that family the same way after learning about the sister. Again, you can sense that house would have been HELL for a sensitive person.

Last thing I will say is that I admire Amy's confidence. She doesn't appear to have any boundaries and is EXTREMELY cool with herself. Which I like.

I don't keep up with all of her projects, but Strangers With Candy was one of the funniest shows of all time. Everyone in comedy is damaged and/or fucked up in their own special way. She's hardly being pushed on anyone, she has her niche and pretty much stays there. If she was constantly shoved down our throats while being an unfunny horrible person (a la Lens Dunham or Amy Schumer), then maybe I could understand the vitriol.

Also I found her quite funny. Her rescue of David from that lurid apartment alone (I forget which book) and her constant snark made me love her.

I'm always hearing how Strangers with Candy is brilliant, genius, etc., but I never got anything out of it. It's a niche thing - there's a reason she's not hugely famous.

In David's early books, their mother is the liveliest, funniest person in the family.

The other brother (Paul, I think?) has, or had, a floor finishing business in Raleigh and would get hugely annoyed if you mentioned his siblings. There's no love lost in that family.

I stayed up way too late reading that thread. Early on, there are some interesting things--like David Sedaris' ex popping up, but it spirals way downhill thanks to this one crazy poster's hatred of David Sedaris. It'sa sight to behold.

Yes, exactly. I get at least two uncontrollable guffaws in every show. After SWC, and the obscure but unbelievably hilarious book "Wigfield", I 'll never stop adoring her no matter how often she misses the mark.
