Dan Fogelberg

The thread that had James Taylor's photo in the original post got me thinking...any DL love for Dan Fogelberg? He wrote some beautiful songs and was kinda handsome (esp, in the photo on the cover of his Twin Sons of Different Mothers album

Twin Sons of Different Mothers is a great album.

He died too early. He performed some heartfelt songs, including my favorites Hard to Say, Same Old Lang Syne, Run for the Roses, and Leader of the Band. I wish I had seen him in concert.

by Anonymousreply 3August 20, 2019 9:09 AM

Was a big fan of his during his heydays.

Huge fan of him. My mother got me into Dan as a child and as I was learning guitar. The album 'Home Free' is probably the bedrock of my musical interests as an artist. I love James Taylor as well, but Dan was everything JT wasn't.

I like Same Old Lang Syne - mainly for nostalgic reasons. That was Fogelberg, right?

by Anonymousreply 8February 11, 2021 2:50 AM

He made me want to touch myself when I was a teen.

I saw him at the Paolo Soleri Amphitheater in Santa Fe in the early 90's. Unfuckingbelievable concert. I wasn't fan. A friend had an extra ticket and she took me. I left a big fan after the concert. His voice was beautiful live. I've been to at least 700 concert in my life and Paolo Soleri Amphitheater was the most amazing place to see anything! Gorgeous setting!

Gorgeous singer/songwriter and much missed.

And, with facial hair he was very dreamy.

Without it, not so much.

Very talented.

His album with Tim Weisberg Twins Sons of Different Mothers is FABULOUS. I loved it as a young college gayling...

by Anonymousreply 13February 13, 2021 2:37 AM

my favorite would be "Longer", sometimes this song just popped into my head for no particular reasons.

Paulo Soleri Amphitheater is a marvelous performance space, with an an unfortunately uncertain future, R10. Closed in 2010, mothballed, currently in poor condition, possibly to be demolished. All for the want of $100K in annual upkeep. A real shame.

An a happier note, "Lazy Susan" from "Twin Sons"...

I loved “Hard to Say” and “Illinois.” His music reminds me of autumn, for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 16February 13, 2021 3:23 AM

This is one of his best songs. Supposedly he wrote it when still in high school. A beautiful song about hope and perseverance.

Fogelberg on that steaming pile he called "Longer":

[quote]Fogelberg told an interviewer that he wrote his biggest hit while lying in a hammock in Hawaii “looking up at the stars.” “This song was drifting around the universe,” Fogelberg recalled, “and I decided I’d give it a good home.” Somebody — the stars, the universe — effed-up bad. “Longer” plays like a parody of a parody of sensitive singer-songwriter schlock, from the Folg’s wimped-out vocals to its “poetry.” (“Mountain cathedral” rhymes with “forest primeval.”) The song clocks in at 3:15 but feels — you guessed it — much, much longer.

Damn, i didn't know he was dead...and at 56 as well. He always looked native american to me, but apparently he was scottish/swede mix. He had some great songs.

I loved a lot of his singles.

And yes, I am the MARY! who posts this when Dan or Donna are mentioned. It makes me tear up every time. Just heard the opening notes and am tearing up now.

Prepare to be stunned. His song, her voice. Heaven.

“Longer” might as well be Greg Brady’s “clowns never laughed before.”

by Anonymousreply 23February 13, 2021 4:30 AM

It’s an OK song but it is a bit much. I like his songs because of the lyrics and they’re easy to sing along with.

by Anonymousreply 24February 13, 2021 4:42 AM

lol I actually don't disagree with that rolling stone piece, his songs are "corny", I won't sit down and listen to his music for an hour, that's not going to happen, but sometimes his songs just came out from nowhere and you always remember them.

by Anonymousreply 25February 13, 2021 4:42 AM

A most beautiful and talented man. When I was a youngun, I mistook him for being the guy who sang "Wildfire". That was of course Micheal Murphy. That song touched me as a 11-year old. I had to to look up sod busting. (Something he left behind). Then my first year in college, I played the album The Innocent Age over and over. I don't understand why Dan had to die so young from prostate cancer. Sad.

I love "The Power of Gold", "Heart Hotels", "Make Love Stay", "Hard to Say", and "Same Old Lang Syne".

I'm kind of meh about "Longer" and "Leader of the Band".

I can't stand "Run for the Roses". It's a fucking horse.

R28 — I love that song. It is one of parents favorite songs of all time as well. Nether Lands is basically Dan’s Pet Sounds in a lot of ways. So beautiful

by Anonymousreply 31February 13, 2021 8:27 PM

Lonely in Love...one of his best.

by Anonymousreply 32February 14, 2021 2:59 AM

I can't get the song hard to say where love went wrong out of my head.

Dan made me tingle "down there" as a teen...

by Anonymousreply 34June 7, 2022 12:28 AM

We used to call this pussy rock. An ex of mine loved him and bought tickets to see him at The Greek. I told him I didn't want to go but he wouldn't give up so I said I would only go if I could bring my best friend and we could drink and not have to drive. My ex agreed. My friend and I started drinking about noon so by the time we got to the show we were totally shit-faced, loud and obnoxious. Apparently we were heckling Fogelberg and the crowd until security escorted us out. Ok well threw us out.

When we got home I told to my ex, "The next time I tell you I don't want to go somewhere, I'm NOT going!"

I don't drink anymore but I still think his music sucks.
