Lana Turner and Judy Garland's friendship

Were they frenemies, or actual friends? I've read some allegations that there was bitterness there them on Judy's end after Lana married Artie Shaw, who Judy was in love with back in their early days at MGM. There are photos of Lana and Judy together throughout the years, up to around the time Judy started going downhill. They also apparently lived next-door to one another at one point. I wonder what their friendship was like.

I think they were actual friends. Two old broads boozing and talking about the golden ear of Hollywood and comparing notes about men. I can see that.

Judy was toxic. Everything she touched turned to shit. She was the Lindsay Lohan of the 40's - 60's albeit talented. She was a trainwreck. Don't give me this shit about Mayer ruining her life with pills, he had everyone hooked on pills, not everyone ended up like her. She was a nuisance pain in the arse headcase.

Lana Turner had no friends. She was fiercely jealous of women, even her daughter.

She was jealous of attractive women. Poor Judy wasn’t known for being a great beauty. Marilyn Monroe was that kind of insecure bitch, too. Nicer like to be around other pretty women.

She's been buried for 50 long years. LET HER GO. Let her go...

Exactly, R5, which is why their friendship might have worked.

I've wondered the same, OP. I imagine things warmed up after Lana and Artie divorced. Lana probably told Judy what an egomaniac he was.

I think Lana and Judy likely bonded while they were starting out at MGM; they were both young women from working-class backgrounds hacking it in Hollywood. They did a number of movies together and appeared to have been longtime friends after, though I don't recall Lana publicly commenting on Judy's death.

Like Natalie Wood, Lana and Judy longed for the coveted lead in Miracle in St. Louis.
