Not to be “creepy” but Richard could defs attend his degree ceremony, leave after he gets his, fly to London and then fly to Miami by night time on the 4th with no issue. If I was him I’d want to celebrate it with my American boyfriend and his family. But alas, sadly I’m not :(

I don't think Richard would stress over July 4th when he has an obligation already. It's a fun holiday but there are others. If he wanted to see Brandon's family he could easily go a day or two after. Or another trip during the summer.
