What Do You Do When You Cannot Sleep?
I’m weaning myself off melatonin and I’m having a hard time going to sleep without it. My anxiety seems to spike and night and I can’t relax even with deep breathing exercises.
What do you do when you can’t sleep? I’m trying listening to Baroque music.

Well pills of course. I'm surprised you even had to ask.

Which ones do you recommend?

Sleepy time tea. Valerian seems to work for me. Melatonin does nothing.

I'm bipolar, usually I just keep going and skip a night's sleep, inevitably zonking more properly progressivrly the next few nights whenever these insomniac bouts hit me.
It's akin to being jetlagged when you travel I guess, where the advice is to keep going until you sync in with the local timezone and not to nap during the day beforehand.
I've never understood the cat or powenap during the day advice either for regulating rest and sleep cycles. If anything this seems counterintuitive and whenever I've tried it, seems to exacerbate my naturally later day body clock.
I've had advice and am currently trying to ensure outside sunlight for at least half an hour daily and early in the day every day without fail. Getting that UV Melanin Vit D dose ai naturel seems to be helping so far.
I deliberately relocated to a year round sunny spot to counteract the SAD (seasonal affective) symptoms I'd always manifested too to try this solution.
I always use and never go travel anywhere without packing an eye sleep mask to. No booze. No caffeine late in the day.

Any gummy bear is nice of the indica variety. Do you have legal cannabis or medical marijuana where you are? I just ate one and hope to hit the sack soon.

Do a full body stretch, then some no impact exercises like pushups, squats, and walking lunges.

It won't kill you to stay up for a night if you're not tired.
Sleep will come when you're exhausted enough.

You can sleep at weekend for 32 hours (6-8 hours at a time) to compensate sleep deprivation you have during weekdays.
Normally I come to DL to read something like R27 R28 of the other thread to lull myself to sleep, or browse some very long articles at the New Yorker or the Atlantic.

A good jack off with using silky smooth lube, and either porn or images in my mind. If that doesn't work, inhale and exhale deeply 10 times, then inhale deeply, hold for 10 sec and slowly exhale. That should work.
As a migraine sufferer, the extreme way is a shower, then into the bed without drying, wrap in a sheet and you'll start shivering violently within 5 minutes. Maintain and you will definitely sleep. Shivering is one of the most exhausting things you can do.
Sleep tight

I read about the Kardashians. I hit the Daily Mail website for Paris Hilton updates when I need the hard stuff.

Commit to watching all 43 minutes of this candle-shop ASMR, OP. Your brain will put you to sleep as a means of self-preservation.
Stare at the mouth; don't just listen.

The best podcast out there is Sleep with Me. There’s something about the host’s voice and delivery that puts me out within ten minutes. Just listening to his nonsense takes your mind off of whatever is twisting around and keeping you awake. Try it. Seriously

Another vote for wank, read. Though a good book sometimes keeps me up all night.
YouTube is full of nature sounds, relaxing sounds for deep sleep that run for 8-10 hours. Make sure your room is pitch black, turn on the nature sounds and listen closely. After 5 minutes, Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

I believe (over)stimulation of our senses keeps us awake for a lot longer than we experience them initially. For example watching the news before you go to sleep can get you all hot and bothered. Same can be a shitty episode of a favorite program where you could've come up with something so much better. Same goes for touch and smell.
I fall asleep a lot faster when the room is completely dark and I clear my head for about five to ten minutes by counting from 10 to 1 over and over again.
It also helps that I don't drink too much before I go to sleep so I don't have to get up during the night to pee.
I make sure that my sheets are comfy and smell clean. I hate distractions including underwear getting into my crack (that's why I sleep nude).

Go through all the DataLounge comments looking for scat trolls and coded shit symbolism then write a post about how you're to classy to think about poo all the time. Repeat. Throw something in about Hollywood gossip. Someone shoud get some sleep out of that.

Sleep doctors do not recommend this. It messes up with your sleep cycle. If you're tossing and turning for more than 15 minutes, get up, do something boring (read a dull book), unitil you get drowsy. Maintain a regular sleep schedule; try to go to sleep the same time each night. Avoid naps in afternoons. Avoid alcohol; although it can 'help' you sleep, it is usually inefficient and interrupted sleep as it alters your sleep rhythms. Avoid caffeine. Caffeine stays in your system for up to 13 hours, so take note of caffeine intake and your bedtime schedule.

Count backwards from 100. Repeat as needed. Try doing it by two, etc.

Try Valerian, it's a good alternative to Melatonin.
