Movies you saw more than once in the movie theater upon its original release?

Not re-releases, or Director Cuts being released, or home released etc.

What movies did you go to see more than once in the theater upon its original run in theaters?

I have a few, but the most was Gravity. I was blown away by how beautiful this film looked on the big screen and how effective the 3D was in this one.

Goldfinger. Twice in a row in Miami Beach with my father when it first opened.

by Anonymousreply 1June 14, 2019 1:40 AM

Poseidon Adventure. I was 8 years old, on Christmas break from school. I think I saw it six times.

Grease. I was 14 and wanted Kenickie Murdoch like I wanted nothing before. Eight times in the summer of 78.

Frozen, because I had a 4-year old daughter and it provided me a couple hours to nap without worrying that she would destroy something.

by Anonymousreply 2June 14, 2019 1:41 AM

Point Break (the original). It was so fucking stupid and there was nothing else to do.

by Anonymousreply 3June 14, 2019 1:41 AM

Smokey and the Bandit. I was about 12 and every birthday party and bar mitzvah seemed to go to it.

by Anonymousreply 4June 14, 2019 1:42 AM

I remember one year I saw 3 movies FOUR times each in the theater: Gladiator, The Perfect Storm and The Patriot.

I saw "Chaplin" (1992) three times. I wasn't in love with the film, but my friends wanted to see it and I knew more about Chaplin than anyone else they knew. We'd watch the film then they'd ask me how much was true and what was made up.

Everyone I saw the film with said the best part was the Oscar montage of actual Chaplin clips.

by Anonymousreply 13June 14, 2019 1:53 AM

I saw The Matrix three times in the first week it opened. That's easily my record.

Avatar, Titanic and Devil Wears Prada three times each.

by Anonymousreply 24June 14, 2019 2:10 AM

Without exaggeration, I have seen Oliver Stone’s The Doors at least 60 times in a theater. The majority of these viewings were at the Waverly Theater in Greenwich Village.

by Anonymousreply 25June 14, 2019 2:10 AM

I saw Gravity about 13 times

Bohemian Rhapsody about 12 times

Avatar about 9 times

Empire Strikes Back.

by Anonymousreply 31June 14, 2019 2:23 AM

The Right Stuff. One of the most beautifully filmed movies I've ever seen on a wide screen. And the Bill Conti score enhanced the film wonderfully. A real treat!

by Anonymousreply 32June 14, 2019 2:24 AM

A Clockwork Orange - twice in one day

The first Star Wars - 7 times

by Anonymousreply 33June 14, 2019 2:24 AM

“MA” 3 times now cause I find it super entertaining, love Octavia’s performance and love Chaz.

by Anonymousreply 34June 14, 2019 2:25 AM

The last 1/2 hour of Empire Strikes Back maybe 20 times. It seemed to be longer than every other movie that I had seen that summer so I would duck into the theatre after the movie I had just seen ended. I loved the hyperdrive sequence, I wish I had been into weed like my friends were.

Yes, r29. And the overly yellow "restored" DVD and the color corrected Blu Ray dozens of times.

Also, in the theater, Lindsay Anderson's "if...." It was at that point the story of my life. Many years ago. i doubt that anyone would know.

The Music Man six times on its original release, infuriating my mother as I was a 12 year old. I think she realized I was gay and hated us both for it.

by Anonymousreply 44June 14, 2019 2:38 AM

Gravity? is this a troll post? I couldn’t get through that piece of shit once. Sandra just spinning in space please. I watched a couple Scream films twice because I love slashers.

CMBYN Three times, I’m sure I’ll be crucified here for that.

by Anonymousreply 46June 14, 2019 2:43 AM

I drove from Texas City to Houston THREE TIMES (said like Patti yelling the number of pictures that audience member took of her) to see Faye Dunaway in Burning Secret 1989. It was playing at one fancy theater in Houston and I got stoned out of my mind on the drive up, then would be all paranoid to get out of the car and walk to the ticket booth. Good times. I was in a Faye obsession phase.

In 1978 I saw Grease every Wednesday for six weeks at the Stockton-on-Tees cinema in the U.K. because Hurworth House School had a half day on Weds. I would buy a sack of Maynard's Wine Gums (basically gummi bears) to eat during the movie. I was obsessed with Marty Maraschino played by Dinah Manoff.

I saw Barfly twice in Houston.

by Anonymousreply 47June 14, 2019 2:43 AM

The Lion King 3x. It was such an awesome movie back then. I don't know why I sometimes watch it w my nephews now, but I just can't get into it anymore. It's like watching the Golden Girls. It use to be fun and funny but I just watch it now and it's alright, but it's not the same anymore.

by Anonymousreply 56June 14, 2019 3:02 AM

I saw Black Swan either 3 or 4 times. I don't know why, but I was obsessed with it.

by Anonymousreply 57June 14, 2019 3:03 AM

The Talented Mr. Ripley. The only time I like a movie do much, I saw it multiple times in the theater

Star Wars: A New Hope - My friend's father took us to see it opening night in some suburban Houston theater. I'm still not sure where we were. Later I took my little sister to see it.

R44 here. My mother also refused to let me see West Side Story on its original release because the women in her beauty parlor where she had her hair done had told her it was about perverted juvenile delinquents in New York. I finally saw it in a 1968 or 1969 re-release.

ELLE - Verhoeven

THE BLACK BOOK - Verhoeven

FEMME FATALE - Brian De Palma

VOLVER - Pedro Almodóvar

I am sure there were others. I only remember these because I dragged my friends to see them with me for a repeat viewing.

by Anonymousreply 74June 14, 2019 3:37 AM

I love George Cukor's Romeo and Juliette for the performances and direction but I only saw it decades after its release even though I am so, so old. And I don't like Norma Shearer, which will get me killed here.

by Anonymousreply 75June 14, 2019 3:37 AM

The summer of 1981, I was 11 and my dad would take me with him to his hanger at an airport where he was building a plane. I would become bored rather quickly and cross the street to a movie theater to pass the time: saw Superman II 9 times and Saturday the 14th 5 times.

There are many I’ve seen two or three times (Misery; Speed; Gladiator; Gravity) during initial release, but I finally topped the Superman II record when I saw Titanic 11 times during its initial release. It was a big screen spectacular unlike anything I’d ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 76June 14, 2019 3:38 AM

[quote]but I finally topped the Superman II record when I saw Titanic 11 times

This thread is depressing me.

by Anonymousreply 77June 14, 2019 3:45 AM

Several I've seen twice, too many to mention.

3x- Tootsie, Grease, Hairspray (the original), Almost Famous, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Xanadu, Ruthless People 4x- Star Wars (counting once during the 1979 re-release), The Doors

If we count revival houses, I'm sure I've seen things like The Shining and Willy Wonka at least 10 times each.

Nowadays I barely can be bothered to see a movie once in the theater if it's new, and I can't imagine going multiple times when you can wait three months and own it. Back then it was 9-12 months before you could see the film again depending on video and/or cable. But I'll go if it's something fun that's old.

by Anonymousreply 78June 14, 2019 3:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 80June 14, 2019 4:10 AM

Went to see Sleuth (Olivier, Caine) with a group of friends in 1972; we stayed to watch it a second time because we couldn't believe there were only two actors and wanted to see how we got fooled. Ditto, The Sixth Sense - wanted to see how I got fooled. I saw the first X-Men movie twice because I thought it was fun. Saw a couple of the Harry Potter movies twice because I enjoyed the special effects and knew it wouldn't look the same on DVD.

Titanic - not intentionally. 2nd time we meant to go see something else, but it was sold out and Titianic was still playing. Third time we had missed the start time of theatrical show, so we were all dressed up and still wanted to see something. titanic was the only option playing in the neighborhood.

Avatar - first time was amazing. Second time brought my parents and all the wonder and creativity was gone and it was quite bad.

by Anonymousreply 129June 14, 2019 4:51 PM

OMG. Cabaret! I peeked in on it on Netflix a few nights ago. You really had to be there in 1972 seeing it for the first time to have grasp of how absolutley revolutionary Fosse's camera work was. "Willkommen" was a shock. But "Mein Herr" left everyone's head spinning. The multiple camera set ups and the rapid editing of shots was something that Fosse pioneered. We had not seen it before and it was as confusing as it was thrilling. Watching it this week, it all seemed so absolutely conventional. But it was not. Not at all.

Saw Beautiful Boy 3 times in theaters within a month. Once at a screening in NYC which Timothee Chalamet was at. Then once at a theater near me by myself and then saw it with a friend. It's not an easy movie to watch. In fact it's downright depressing. But couldn't stop watching it because of Timothee's beauty and amazing performance.

A Clockwork Orange at least 200 times. I was an usher at the only movie theater in town where it was shown and it ran for months. I was 18 and it was X rated and youhad to be 18 to work it. Small theater and if you were inside you were in front of the screen. I knew the film literally frame by frame shot by shot. I occurred to me that I might have seen it more time than Stanley Kubrick. Funny thing, I saw it again, first time in easily 40 years and I was surprised that I barely remembered it, and much of what I remembered I remembered wrong.

by Anonymousreply 141June 15, 2019 3:32 AM

Cruel Intentions. I liked it so much I decided to watch it a second time by myself. I’m not the type of person who went to places alone, so I really liked it. Unfortunately, a black couple wearing matching tracksuits (so 1991, obviously they didn’t get the memo) decided to sit in front me. During the gay scene they loudly showed their disgust and ruined the whole fucking movie for me.

by Anonymousreply 142June 15, 2019 9:52 AM

The Revenant

And then on DVD several more times to watch the tracking shots in detail and inderstand the mechanics of the choreographed set pieces.

I saw Highlander multiple times in the theater. One theater must have had an extended version, there was a ten-minute WWII scene that hadn't been in the other viewings, and actually explained a lot about the Highlander's relationship with his assistant. It's so silly, but the Queen soundtrack was amazing, and it hit me just the right way as a teenager. I also took three different guys to Gladiator.

by Anonymousreply 150June 16, 2019 7:37 PM

I saw Scream 2 and Scream 4 two times in the theater each. I only saw the third one in a matinee on opening day.

I believe my record is seeing Evita three times with mom and sister.

by Anonymousreply 151June 16, 2019 7:48 PM

AMERICAN BEAUTY (4x, I’m embarrassed to say now—not because I have a vendetta against Spacey but because the movie is pretentious, heavy handed, and overrated). I bawled each time.

I HEART HUCKABEES (3 or 4x, but one of them doesn’t count because I got way too stoned beforehand and had a brutal panic attack that lasted the length of the movie; I hid out in the men’s room and also in my car, hyperventilating, while my friend enjoyed the movie inside. I still think it’s a good movie, but not THAT good.)

ZODIAC (3x — I now own the excellent 2-disc blu-ray set of it and have seen it another few times. Brilliant movie.)

Not in its original release but I repeatedly took people to see Camille (1936) at revival houses when such places existed to show them how wonderful Garbo was. This was during the video age but I preferred to watch it on the big screen. It was like a test of my friendship. If you didn't like Garbo, you were out.

R91, R94, R120; I'm an Australian but I've been told that in Britain in the 1960s popular films were exhibited as 'roadshows' at more expensive ticket prices and at stated times.

Big popular roadshow films such as 'Sound of Music' were shown at the same city theatre for up to and over a year.

Whereas non-roadshow films were less popular films, shown as a double bill and in continuous performance throughout the day Monday to Saturday.

by Anonymousreply 162October 26, 2019 2:04 AM

Silence of the Lambs, Crimes of Passion, Crimes of the Heart, The Betsy, Life of Brian, The Piano, A Room with a View, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Romper Stomper, Sweetie, When Harry Met Sally, Parasite (the Korean film - not the Demi Moore one), Ghost, Wild at Heart, I Stand Alone, The Rainbow all come to mind.

by Anonymousreply 163October 26, 2019 2:12 AM

Pulp Fiction - 17 times in the theatre. I LOVED that movie at that time.

"Grease" when it first came out. I went to see it at the movies probably 30 times that summer of 1978 ( I was ten years old).

by Anonymousreply 164October 26, 2019 2:14 AM

Stand By Me - 6 times. It was a lonely period in my life and the idea that four school friends could set out on an adventure seemed to fill a hole in my life.

A Christmas Story - 4 times. I identified with Ralphie and the absurdity of childhood. I love that scene where the teacher is trying to get the kids to admit who put Flick up to sticking his tongue onto the icy pole and Ralphie is attempting to look innocent and just gazing all around. That was totally me in grade school.

Great thread. My biggest record has to be ALL THAT JAZZ. I saw it twice on opening day, went back Saturday and Sunday, and then after school each day. I loved it. Maybe 15 times in its opening week. Also, I was in Paris and Almodóvar's ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER opened. I was free on Wednesday (when it opened) and I saw it at Les Halles at 9:00 or 10:00 am. To my surprise it was playing in one of those huge screens where only blockbusters play. I loved it so much I had lunch and went back. In the evening, it was playing at the GAUMONT AMBASSADE (now closed), in one of the GAUMONTARAMA screens. And for the rest of the week, I went to all these wonderful movie theaters where the movie was playing in cinemas where only big blockbusters used to play. I loved the movie.

by Anonymousreply 177March 8, 2020 11:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 183March 8, 2020 2:43 PM

I wrote movie reviews for my high school paper and I took it very seriously. At least twice that I can remember--for "Three Days of the Condor" and "Mahogany"--I'd have my mom drop me off at the theater on Saturday afternoon for the 1 PM show and sit through it twice.

Much more recently, I saw "Jojo Rabbit" twice in the theater because the first time I came in a little late and missed the first couple of (fairly crucial) minutes.

by Anonymousreply 184March 8, 2020 2:52 PM

I saw "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "Love Story" at least 3 times each. I had a gayling crushes on Redford and O'Neal. I also saw "The Last Picture Show" about 6 or 7 times in theatre. I just really loved/got lost in that movie.

by Anonymousreply 185March 8, 2020 3:02 PM

Groundhog Day. 34 times. I think. Maybe I just saw it once and relived it the others times.

In reality I did see it at least 3 times when it first opened.

by Anonymousreply 186March 8, 2020 3:18 PM

I saw Norma Rae three times.

by Anonymousreply 187March 8, 2020 3:26 PM

Bohemian Rhapsody about 15 or 16 times. I was obsessed. It felt powerful on the big screen, and every showing was packed, up until probably my last time going shortly before it left, and even then the theater was about half way full.

A true Blockbuster.

by Anonymousreply 188March 8, 2020 3:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 194March 8, 2020 4:16 PM

There are two films that were released when I was in college that I went to the theater to see multiple times. They both still mean a lot to me: "My Beautiful Laundrette" and "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown."

by Anonymousreply 195March 8, 2020 5:53 PM

Willie Wonka, the original with Gene Wilder. I was 10 or 12 and I loved the way he sang 'Real Imagination' or whatever that song was called. I also fell in love with Gene Wilder's beautiful blue eyes.

I actually watch tons of movies over and over, but it's rare for me to actually see a movie multipole times out in the theater these days. These are the ones off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are more.

by Anonymousreply 197March 8, 2020 7:02 PM

I may go see The Invisible Man a second time.

Most recently I saw Bad Boys For Life twice.

by Anonymousreply 198March 8, 2020 8:16 PM

I think I accidentally saw 'Gold' with Roger Moore twice in the 1970's. Once on it's own and later as a double-feature with a James Bond movie, terrible film.

I haven't been to the cinema since they banned smoking in about 1987, it wasn't an enjoyable experience at our local 'flea-pit' in any case and I don't miss it.

The Italian movie from a few years ago, The Great Beauty. I was obsessed with the music and scenery.

by Anonymousreply 204March 9, 2020 4:01 AM

I've seen plenty of films twice in the movie theatre (Pulp Fiction, Clerks, Titanic, Boogie Nights, The Artist, American Hustle, Birdman, Hell or High Water, Nocturnal Animals are ones I can recall off the top of my head).

But, the ones I saw more than that are Dead Man Walking (3x) and Leaving Las Vegas (4x). One of them was a double-feature. I must have had a death-wish. In my defence, I was young and depressed. And Dead Man Walking especially still is a good film (I'm not sure I can ever watch LLV again; too depressing).

Club Paradise. FOUR times. It was the only movie playing at the cinema for weeks.

Funny because the movie is mostly forgotten today. What a cast, though. Robin Williams, Twiggy, Jimmy Cliff, Peter O’Toole and some SCTV members.

by Anonymousreply 208April 27, 2020 12:04 AM

I saw Deep Blue Sea 11 or 12 times just for Thomas Jane. I thought he was the hottest thing I’d ever seen.

I saw it in three different theatres with about six different people. But mostly I went to the local $2 movie theatre and watched it alone. I was 17. I still watch it whenever it’s on tv, haha.

Edward Scissorhands x4. I was captivated by the Tim Burton's (then fresh) visuals and Danny Elfman's score, which really made the movie. Criminally underrated, IMHO. Burton's vision has grown a bit tiresome, but he was at the top of his game in 1990.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Another early Tim Burton Triumph. Great visuals and music score. And Paul Ruebens's style meshed so perfectly with Burton's. So funny. Saw it 5 times and funny every time. The audience was enthusiastic each time too.

I saw The Phantom Menace 3x - Once, because it was opening night and I was looking forward to it. Second time, my nephew wanted to see it and I wanted to reevaluate how truly shitty it was. And a third time with a group of friends to make fun of how awful it was during a nearly empty midnight showing.
