Really?? Why Kochie?? You couldn't have said Karl Stefanovic or even Andy Lee??
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 3, 2019 6:51 AM |
R2 I didn’t say I wanna suck it. Andrew O’Keefe can definitely do whatever he wants to me

Hugh Sheridan? Wasn’t there a thread about him a few years ago? Is he aging well?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 3, 2019 3:29 PM |
Hugh Sheridan is hot as fuck and still looks good. He's currently in 5 Bedrooms and had a shirtless scene coming out of the shower

R6 I think Ed Kavalee is cute. But I also think Sam Pang is cute, much to the horror of some of my friends. As far as newsmen go, I think Paul Kennedy from the ABC is a bit of alright.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 4, 2019 11:23 AM |
R18 not sure what he's up to these days, but I used to see the gorgeous Andrew McFarlane dancing topless and sweaty in the gay cubs of Melbourne when I was an underage teen clubber in the late '80s.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 4, 2019 11:24 AM |
Sam Pang's hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 4, 2019 11:55 AM |
R12 - re: Ben Cousins - seriously?? Do you think your friend's jail bird dad is reliable? Sadly - think poor Ben will end up exiting the world in some particularly sordid manner. God he was a hottie back in the day...what a downfall. So sad.
Yes to Kavallee and Sam Pang! No to Kochie - or any of the breakfast tv presenters (tho I'll admit Koch had something many years ago - that kinda straight-guy assuredness and swagger - but now? - just no. And the fake stefanovic? Blah!)
ABC Brizzie radio and TV have Craig Zonka - whose love of life and bearish good looks have won him many fans - both male and female. Smart and funny - and seemingly very natural and just himself. Don't care if he is straight - he's adorkable! Love The Zonk!

Who was the 1970s Aussie TV hunk who did a nude photo shoot for a women's magazine? He was walking through a water hole and it shows his flaccid cock. Eric something?

by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 4, 2019 12:50 PM |
R18 His still working. The last thing I saw him in was the film Truth with Cate Blanchett & Robert Redford. Andrew MacFarlane played Cate's lawyer.
Reminds me so many Australian actors are/were gay: Andrew MacFarlane, Nicolas Eadie, John Hargraves (R.I.P.), Harold Hopkins (R.I.P.), Graham Kennedy (R.I.P.) all come to mind.
Lots of lesbians too; Fiona Spence (Vera Bennett from Prisoner), Victoria Longley (R.I.P.), Bunney Brooke (R.I.P.) all come to mind.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 4, 2019 12:53 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 4, 2019 12:56 PM |

So who else is lesbian from Australian TV shows? Alexandra Fowler? Judy Nunn? What about Joy Smithers? Joy starred alongside Nicole Kidman in Bangkok Hilton and stole the show, was predicted to be the big break out star from that mini-series.

I had heard rumours in the 1980s that Jimmy Hannan used to give head jobs at some beat. If true he must have been able to open his mouth really wide as he had one of biggest set of teeth the world has ever seen.
The linked article naturally doesn't mention anything about a 'double life'.

Any gossip on Vince Martin. He was an actor that appeared in a lot of soaps in the 1970s and during the 1980's I walked past him and Tom Burlinson (they both pinged to me but that doesn't prove anything). I know Vince had a child with actress Joanne Samuels (she played Mel Gibson's wife in the first Mad Max film) and it appears in New York doing Jazz.
He was also a Cleo centrefold that I jerked off a lot to as a teenage. He also appeared as the pilot in the Tom Hanks film Castaway. Anyway, he still looks great.

Was Michael Tunn of 1990s Afternoon Show and Triple J fame gay?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 7, 2019 2:08 PM |
R48 R49 he's played gay a few times.
This rather annoying, back-to-front movie has him "masturbating but only his head is shown. After clearly reaching orgasm, the camera backs away so his full body is shown. The male rolls over facing the camera and his non-erect, perfectly flacid penis is briefly visible in the male's hand. Additionally, there is no evidence of semen that one would expect to see."

I'm quite enjoying Boy George on 'The Voice' this year.
I've also become quietly and somewhat ashamedly addicted to Celebrity Name Game, with 'TV's Grant Denyer'.

I saw the Adam Goodes documentary and naturally it featured the invective of Toilet Trader Alan Jones. Don’t his bogan fans realise he’s not only gay, but closeted, and not only closeted by a preyer of boy athletes?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 9, 2019 3:23 AM |
The Adam Goodes "documentary" was a tear-jerker designed to elicit tears in every self-righteous way it could.
A movie with a gushing musical score cannot claim to be a "documentary".

Watching this 95 minute show is excruciating.
25 minutes is spent on advertising; 20 minutes is spent with the contestants talking about their emotional back-story; 25 is spent with the judges carrying on like teenagers. And ten minutes is spent on the contestant actually singing.

Pretty raunchy rumours about Antony Hamilton in another thread

Oh, and I care about Judy Davis as well, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 9, 2019 3:49 PM |
I don't think that's the honey badger. The honey badger was the Bachelor last year, and caused mayhem, when he didn't pick any of the silly tarts in the final.
I actually record 'The Voice' and fast forward through all the crap.
I CANNOT stand Alan Jones. Such an arrogant c*nt. Remember last year when he used an ancient idiom with the 'n' word in it. Crusty ol' c#nt. Saying that, the ol' queen is probably on this site furiously masturbating away to the sexier threads.
Oh, I've just thrown up a little in my mouth.

R27 I see Nicholas Eadie at the railway station occasionally. He is not well.
It seems he has some kind of illness (or is inebriated?, I don’t know). He’s only had one TV role over the last 13 years.
There were rumours in Adelaide in 1997 that he raped another man. And three years ago, it seems, some man in Barcelona robbed and raped him.

He is ridiculously hot. I saw Ben Winspear in a Bell Shakespeare production that toured to the shitty town I was working in at the time. He glowed onstage and was shirtless much of the time. Dusseldorp seems like a dry society matron.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | June 14, 2019 5:03 PM |

Interesting that Judy Davis and Colin Friels' son got arrested the other week for assault (some sort of bar fight). They keep such a tight lid on everything but I remember more than a decade ago Judy supposedly filed an AVO against Colin? She seemed to try and keep that all buried though, but it's weird that the son now is showing violent tendencies (I think both their kids grew up well in private schools etc.).

Does anyone else remember when singer of crooney old songs, David Campbell came out, years ago? I remember it being when he was known as a singer, and son-of-Barnesy, and before his tv career. I vaguely recall tv ads for women's magazine or celeb mag saying he was happy to finally be open about being gay. (Other details I think I remember bur definitely not as certain about are that he had a boyfriend and Barnesy was ok wth it all.)
Then he went quiet for a while. Next thing he was losing lots of weight, he began getting tv gigs that were more than just singing spots,, and his publicist team/CH9) was making a big fuss in the the glossies about him getting married. To a woman. .And suddenly there was nothing on the internet about that gay period.
Or is this like some kind of gay Mandela Effect ?
by Anonymous | reply 105 | June 15, 2019 8:23 AM |
I have always thought Judy Davis was manic depressive, I've no evidence that she is, just a feeling I have. She also looks very tortured and neurotic, perhaps that's why.

Marcus Graham and Peter Phelps are apparently gay
by Anonymous | reply 108 | June 15, 2019 8:49 AM |
R105 I always thought David Campbell was gay but don't remember him actually being 'out'? I might have cottoned on to him a little later though (like when he did Dancing with the Stars) so the 'clean up' of his image might have already been in action.
R106 I can see it. In my (very few) encounters with her she's always come across as EXTREMELY intelligent, but quite severe and fierce. She's really funny, but I get the sense that when she goes home she isn't always the happiest little vegemite.
R107 Wouldn't be surprised at all. At this point it doesn't really matter though because she'll probably be dead by the end of the year and I don't think she would have had any sordid affairs or anything that could come out later.
R108 I've ALWAYS thought Marcus Graham was gay. Not so sure about Phelps but he did play gay very convincingly in Lantana (brilliant movie).

Nah, although I do know Anthony came out a few years ago. My memory of Campbell being gay was maybe somewhere around the mid 2000's. I've mentioned this online last year and someone else responded that they knew he'd come out but didn't know he'd had a big flowery, No Idea/Women's Monthly style wedding and was now presenting hetero. And I hate breakfast tv but when I do see the rather drawn-looking David Campbell on the screen, I still can't see him as the definitely heterosexed husband half of a straight couple. .

I remember David Campbell coming out as gay! But I had no idea he was now married. Does he still host the morning show with Sonia Kruger? She's looking like a desiccated cicada on The Voice. Close-ups are not her friend at this stage of her career.

R32 - Re: Paul McDermott - back in the day, heard rumours that he was a real little root-rat - but strictly with women. Also - hygenically challenged. Dirty boy! lol!
R64 - Grant Denyer's little ray of sunshine public persona - I'll lay odds the story behind the scenes in quite different! Remember that expose in the women's mag a few years ago - he and his wife - busted at the expensive Thai rehab resort? They were supposedly overworked and tired. Or had problems with crystal meth. Depends who you believe. At the moment, there are posters of him on the sides of busses advertising his latest game show - and he looks freaky! Photoshopped to within an inch of his life - and fake, glowing, radioactive looking teeth. He's feeaking creepy! Can't imagine anyone more fake or inauthentic.
R90 - know someone who went to acting school with Düsseldorp or whatever her name is. Comes from money - entitled and borderline narcissistic from the get go. If she is in a lavender marriage - then it's not her inclination - or she's changed a lot! - she always liked men in the past - and always the best of them. The hottest, most likely to reflect well upon her, etc - and she was quite competitive and determined to get what she wanted.
The poster who mentioned Nichola Eadie. Very sad. He was pretty much universally loved by all in the industry. That accusation of rape hit him hard. His career seems over nowadays. He certainly had partied hard when he was young - but had to be fairly discreet as he was considered leading man//masculine hunk material professionally - which doesn't marry well with the dance-party and heavy male sex enthusiast in his private life. Must've been awkward - not like he was closeted to anyone in the biz.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | June 15, 2019 12:58 PM |
I suspect you're right, r109, about Campbell being sanitised up for television. He'd been quite successful in musical theatre from 1996 onwards, and *I think* his coming out was after he'd finished up performing in 2001 musical, Shout! He won a Helpman for his role as Johnny O'Keefe, and so quickly became a bit of a household name. Wikipedia says he scored his first tv gigs, DWTS, and It Takes Two, in 2007, and it was November 2008 when he married English producer, Lisa Hewitt, in St. Philips', an Anglican church. in Sydney CBD's 'Church hill'. Poor guy, looks like he only had a couple of years of not hiding, until he was straightwashed for breakfast telly.
Seems this year's Queen's Birthday honours include a Medal of the Order of Australia awarded to one David "I'm a heterosexual now!" Campbell, for "service to the entertainment and arts". Yeah, R115, FrauDuLent, apparently he's still doing Morning Extra with the Cicada , as well as occasionally filling in for Karl the pisshead on Today. [Prior to that he'd been regular fill-in guy for Larry Emdur on The Morning Show, which led to him co-hosting Mornings]

Interesting about Dusseldorp. She is a good actress. So what is it about her castmate on APTCH being such an Instaho? Isn’t he getting a tad long in the tooth to be doing that? And the Logies are next weekend, right?

Lmao! I wonder if it's true that she's the reason Darren left The Voice or if he was just over it?
[Quote] At the moment, there are posters of him on the sides of busses advertising his latest game show - and he looks freaky!

I thought David Campbell was gay when I first heard of him, when he was still only working in theatre. I was assured by people who knew him that he wasn't, so I've kept a casual eye on him since, in the sense that I'd definitely have read anything that hinted he was gay. I absolutely DON'T remember him ever coming out. TIM Campbell did, of course, and subsequently married Anthony Callea.
As to David Campbell's weight, I'm sure I've heard him say he's been a vegan for the last several years. I think Lisa is too.
R98, if you want to see Brett Climo have chemistry, check this out. He wasn't always a plank of wood.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | June 15, 2019 4:12 PM |
I guess that's possible, R102, but the show felt so sincere, especially the Aussie version(s), that I didn't mind. I mean, I can't believe looking like Gilbert and knowingly selling himself as the former. So damn cute but with the shyness and sweetness of a little computer nerd. Not from there so wondered if they became local celebrities of sorts with these shows? Gilbert, at least (he was clearly a popular one).

Although Climo and Dusseldorp had little chemistry on APTCH it somehow worked.

R9, R10, R118 Hugh Sheridan and Tim Draxl are both peas in a pod (though one is straight and the other gay)
Both actor/singers are in their 30s with a few crows-feet on their face and both trying desperately to ensnare the gay market. Tim gets semi-nude on Instagram and Hugh is photographed with two socks stuffed down his underpants

R14 Beau Ryan may be superficially sexy but he’s hairless hetero with no waist.
R23 Craig Zonca isn’t gay but every ABC employee is an effeminised SNAG.
R27 I hadn’t heard the late Harold Hopkins was gay.
R34 I used to furtively visit that porn store on Park St in Sydney.
R38 I’ve never heard of Christopher Egan. It seems he was another ex-Home and Away star who got lost in LA
R41 You will need to give us a few more clues as to that alleged ‘swimmer who fucked Jackman’.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | June 16, 2019 2:52 AM |
David Campbell pings gay but I never recall any 'coming out'.
R106 I've only ever heard how unpleasant Judy Davis is from so many people. Walked by her and hubby Colin Friels (they were coming out of a restaurant we were going in) - I didn't recognise either of them but wasn't paying any attention either. Personally, I would never want any interaction from Judy Davis aside from watching her work (she usually great in anything she does). Honestly, Judy Davis & Debra Winger should appear in a film together. They both appear to be unbearable people but hugely talented.
Hugh Jackman pings like anything - even in photographs. Back in the mid 90's on the back page of a magazine in a Sunday paper was a picture of Deborah Lee-Furness with accompanying article. My partner was looking at the article, I glanced over his shoulder and said 'Who is that queen in the background'. He replied 'That's Hugh Jackman'. I honestly didn't recognise him and he was even that prominent in the picture but his imagine shouted out Gay. Anyway, my partner and I still laugh about that.

It's possible R130...but it feels so clear in my mind, because I distinctly remember thinking hmm, how will Barnesy cope with having a gay son.
Anybody watch The Voice tonight? Sonnee Kruegs was looking like an old Barbie whose face had been left on the ducted heating vent overnight. I've got a bit of a hard on for that Denzel guy on Team Kelly.

Are you confusing David Campbell confirming he was Jimmy’s son with him coming out?
Hugh Sheridan is gay but the media aren’t about to out him.
Dan Ewing is a strange one. Definitely gay rumours around him and some thought he felt ‘obliged’ to marry the ex wife. Not sure if he’s still best friends with her brother.

Sonia Kruger is fun!! Yes she looks a mess but she's one of the few likeable morning TV personalities.

Seem to remember there was an article/photo essay on David Campbell in the second or third issue of that soft porn gay 'art' magazine - Blue - many years ago.
Think there were tasteful nude pics - without displaying peen - and outta memory - didn't come out - but was being very coy and cool about it - and assume his agent had thought the gig would be a great marketing tool to men who go to cabarets and buy CDs of show tunes...
I had the issue - but sent it to a friend in the States who wanted it - so can't dig it out to confirm. But I think there was a lots of mystery and 'is he or isn't he?' going on.
Anyway - certainly gay-friendly and happy to appeal to our demographic back in the day.

I'm pretty sure David Campbell never came out. He seems to be a very gay friendly, straight theater guy. He is hosting Weekend Today and still a few mornings of the Today Extra thing. I do wonder if he's being groomed to join the Today show full time as a co-host after the sacking of the Stefanovic brothers and co debacle. That show has lost it's zing after Carlos left. It really is bad. It seems like a group of nice people playing at making a show in a shitty little studio.

I met Pia Miranda (Looking for Alibrandi, etc.) at a party once and she said KAK played a 5-second cameo in a short film she did, and that KAK was a fucking bitch and yelling at everyone on her set - I think the cameo was shot on the actual KAK Show after they filmed for the day.

by Anonymous | reply 148 | June 16, 2019 12:25 PM |
There is no way Bert is "completely straight", but what he might be is litigious. He's not bipolar - his problem was depression mixed with alcohol. That's by his own admission and I've never seen any reason to question that.
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Graham was an undiagnosed bipolar case, though. He was associated with big mood swings, eg going from being the life of the party at the studio to shutting himself off from everyone for weeks at a time except on set. Those who worked with him pointed out he was in a very stressful job, which he reacted to with great anxiety, but from today's standpoint it sounds like more than that. I never thought he was tortured by his homosexuality (he was forever dropping gleeful hints), so it was something else.
Matthew Newton is very talented and no doubt he is bipolar, but he surely couldn't have waged as much mayhem as he did in his youth without a sizeable drug problem. If that was the case, and if he's stopped now, it's a pity his career seems to have been eternally blighted by drug-affected behaviour, repulsive as it was.
R135, I always assumed the studios shielded Hugh Sheridan because, Money.

He got a long way on the "I'm not violent, just bipolar" message, but he turned out to be violent anyway. I know heaps of bipolar people and none of them have beaten up multiple partners or attacked taxi drivers. He was never a very interesting actor to watch, so I can't say I miss him. Tom Burlinson reminds me a lot of the late Australian actor Jon Blake. A great actor who was really square-jawed and handsome. Blake was destined to become the next Tom/Mel Gibson. The world was just starting to notice before his career was cut short in 1986 with a horrific accident on the set of the film "The Lighthorseman". R199 - I used to live in Kings Cross and at one time Alex was doing a play at the Griffin Theatre Company. One day he was at the hairdressers in front of my block of units. The shop's toilet was near the units and frankly I was sick of having to tell every customer where it was. He appeared in my hallway as I was coming home. He asked me where the toilet was and I ignored him. I recognised who he was but still ignored him. He asked me again so I relented and told him, and he smiled at me. I told him I was going to see his play that night, which I was, and he came closer to me. He said to come and talk to him after the show. He was soft spoken which was a bit of a surprise since I had seen him play tough characters. So that night I saw his play with a friend and afterwards he was in the foyer. He was surrounded by people but saw me and smiled, though staying in his group. I might have stayed to try and talk to him but my friend dragged me away, as he was not as interested in talking to Alex. I had heard that he was gay and after talking to him briefly I believed it. It wasn't a lets-fuck right now reaction but he certainly had the vibe.

Todd was on with Simon Gallagher for a number of years way back during their Gilbert & Sullivan days.
Simon married Todd's sister.
Todd publicly outed Simon a year or two ago and essentially ended his sister's marriage.

I got to interview Alex Dimitriades when he came to NZ to do press for 'Head On'. He was stunning, and a total honey. He fucking hated the actor who played his 'love interest' in the film. If you have seen it you will be aware Alex is fucking committed and during the sex scene the other actor turned very difficult and wanted out of the sex scene. Asshole
Also interviewed Bill Hunter when he was here with 'Priscilla'. Said he fucked Ava Gardner when she was shooting 'On The Beach' in Oz. I knew he was on the shoot doing stunts, and when I asked, off air, about the film he stated he had fucked her, actually had a bit of a fling. Very very cool man.

Oh someone up thread mentioned Marcus Graham.....
Ok he was in Wellington shooting a very bad kids S.F show, I was shooting at the same studio, we struck up a friendship, (straightishy).
Anyhoo, I got him some acid, (the great thing about having all the International crews in town is you can always get good A Class in Wellington), and it was fucking nice. I did not realize he had been (mostly) straight since the Nicole shit.
Long story short, he disappeared for two days, missed calls and shoots and it became a semi shit show. And then he left town then and there. Hope he is happy, lovely guy

David Campbell was kind of out/outed in the early-mid 90’s. I remember seeing a women’s magazine with the headline “Jimmy Barnes gay shock!” but because of the different surname didn’t make any connection. David had a role in the (very gay) play Love! Valour! Compassion! during the 1996 Mardi Gras season. One of the gay newspapers in Sydney published a very bitchy piece about the torrid ‘love, valour, and compassion’ going on between two of the male cast. No names were mentioned but somehow you just knew it was David Campbell and Caleb Packham (whose acting career didn’t take off and is now a yoga instructor). Around the same time Outrage magazine did a cover story on David Campbell but the closet door had closed (if it had ever really been open). It was such an awkward interview that they sarcastically used on the magazine cover a pic of David biting his lip and looking confused. Can’t find a copy of that cover pic now but it was similar to this one:

R230 - don't know anything about Danni Minogue's sexual inclinations - tho you'd have to think she was into cock from her extensive dating history...
I worked with a woman years ago who wasn't a performer but spent a lot of time when young on the YTT set as her parent worked on the show.
When I knew this woman, there was a lot about Danni in the press - her plastic surgery, love life, dramas - she was such an attention whore - and most here were down on her and thought her vaguely ridiculous. Anyway - this woman always maintained that no matter what went down - she and all the cast and crew of the show all really liked Danni. She was always professional - as well as friendly and genuine - a truly good egg! - and my colleague would t hear a bad word about her.
Otoh - Tina arena? Apparently no one liked working with her. Cold, calculating, ambitious - always about her - and no interest in anyone else. Which used to upset me as I was a huge fan - and thought - and still think! - she's super talented. Ah well - love the art - don't dwell too much on the artist...

R253 Judy & Abigail were at a nightclub in the 80s in a sort of paid appearance situation promoting Sons & Daughters and she was flirting with women all night, none of which seemed interested in her and some seemed oblivious, whilst Abigail was drinking like a fish and dancing with the young guys.

I felt really bad for her after she lost her home after the Victorian floodings and she wound up living in emergency accommodation in a church for a while. R44 Browning quietly dated her younger co-star Liam Aiken for a little bit after the movie wrapped, didn’t she? They were just kids so I don’t imagine it was serious, and given their ages at the time (18 & 17 respectively) I can see why they’d have kept even a casual relationship quiet. I think I remember reading about it on Livejournal.
They were both teens playing in their first big roles for ASOUE with La Streep & Jim Carrey, so that must have been trepidatious. It’s a pity Emily only did movies that were either weird or exploitative & trashy after that, because she is rather good when given opportunity.
I don’t know if she’s ever dated women or ever would but she strikes me as bisexual.

A lot of us seem to be remembering that time in the 1990s when young David Campbell was very definitely putting his butt out and making use of us for his own career.
R122 He was in the theatre as an unknown 20 year-old starring in an AIDS play called ‘Three Winters Green’ at the Stables Theatre in ‘Gay Land (Darlinghurst) in late 1993.
Then in ‘Relative Merits’ at the same theatre in March 1994 where he played a naive 19-year-old country swooning over his hunky football-playing brother.
Then in another uber-gay play called ‘Only-Heaven-Knows’ in the following year (cute shirtless picture below) .
R228 ‘Love! Valour! Compassion!’ was in the 1996 Gay Mardi Gras at the Footbridge Theatre and it had quite a lot of incidental nudity. He played Bobby, the young blind character and he caused a sensation when he’s nude (and blind) walking forward towards a refrigerator placed at the front of the stage and fooling the audience to think he’d fall off the stage.
And I guess that was the time he did those ‘tasteful nude pics’ in that soft porn named Blue magazine (R137).
He was also doing some solo cabaret shows specialising in old style queeny camp lounge music and Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber there that year. Her appeared with visiting American diva Barbara Cook in 1995.
Then he was picked up by Michael Feinstein taking him to New York and pushing him into some big projects— such as dubbing the singing voice for Ben Affleck in ‘Joseph, King of Dreams’ in 2000.
There may have been more but I guess all of that was ‘under the sheets’.

by Anonymous | reply 302 | June 21, 2019 8:01 AM |
It was some pub in Melbourne (can't remember the name), not a huge audience or anything but I was surprised and impressed she was still out there doing it!
Has a backing band and they do mostly covers, Motown classics, disco hits, some rock songs, Tina Turner stuff. And of course some of her 'hits', I only recognised Jack-Jack-Jackie which she closed with, and she sounded just as good on it despite it being a million years ago. Everyone was dancing their head off.
Her voice probably would be good on more jazzy stuff though. But she still sounds GREAT. I think she said her and the band had a regular thing there every week and also did other shows here and there.

R311 - yeah - collins for married years ago - always assumed it was a lavender marriage/marriage of convenience between two old friends. I mean - he was as gay as a goose! - and out of memory, she was this very grandmotherly, slightly frumpy woman. Hopefully they had a lovely life together - he seemed pretty nice and relatively harmless...
Tho I had a flatmate years ago - early eighties - who had wanted to be a filmmaker. He'd made some super-eight home movies - and somehow his parents brought them to the attention of Collins (don't know exactly if they knew him or knew someone who did!) - and Collins - supposedly was very impressed and for a little while 'mentored' the lad. He was a straight lad - allegedly! - and very nice looking, nearly finished high school. Never heard any mention of anything untoward - but then you wouldn't - I mean - like the guy would ever say anything? And collins certainly wouldn't! But I often wondered...
Oh! And Collins' wife's name? Joan. Not to be confused with a more famous Joan Collins!

Collins married his secretary Joan.
Collins was likely gay as a goose as you say.
Although gay, I would say he was asexual in a sense of non practicing in the dark art of SEX!
I think their marriage was genuine in a sense that they shared mutual interests and were just great life companions.
I know marriages like that. Especially as they married at a latter age.
He seemed like a lovely man and demonstrated a true passion for something that he made a career and dream job out of.

No, they aren't. They're donating to the principle that it' should be fine to ignore your employer's codes of conduct if it means telling gay people they're going to hell.

I saw Bill Collins once in person. He looked very tall - maybe 6'2. I was at that showbiz record store in Sydney Ava and Susan's, which I understand is now gone, and spotted him talking to the owners there. He didn't cruise me or anything.

Bill Collins never pinged to me. If anything he appeared asexual and to my knowledge not a shred of gossip was ever heard. I think the love of his life was list love of movies.

I always loved when Bill Collins would bring out his memorabilia when presenting movies. He had a replica of The Maltese Falcon. I always appreciate how much he loved Douglas Sirk.

He was great. I remember watching his introduction to Leave Her to Heaven even though I had just seen it at a reportary cinema. Bill Collins was a legend. And to think he only stopped presenting films on Foxtel last year.

Call him by his correct name - John Michael ‘Hollywood’ Howson 😂
And call it by its real name - ‘religious freedom’ only seems to pop up when someone wants to engage in hate speech. People like Folau aren’t sanctioned for openly going to church or making positive posts. Only when they tell people they’re sinners going to hell.

R321 - was t Ava and Susan's fabulous back in the day? Long since closed. Sigh. Great soundtracks - still have a few! Could never work out which of the owners was supposed to be Ava and which one was Susan though... ;)
Collins would plug the store on tv all the time. He was very generous about stuff like that - book and record stores got plenty of business thanks to his mentions on his movie show. But if you started getting into that - I gather it was carte blanche for Mr Collins to have pretty much whatever he wanted from your shop. But hell - worth every penny! You just can't buy that kind of publicity normally...

Did any of you guys ever hear much goss about various prominent footballers back in the day?
Remember in the eighties and nineties, various gay guys would tell stories of having had sex with famous, big name footy stars. or if not themselves - they had friends who did. Always took those rumours with a big pinch of salt - they seemed more like wishful thinking to me! But some names - big, masculine, married and supposedly hetero types - kept getting mentioned again and again...
Speaking of footballers: what of the mess that is Ben Cousins! Any WA dataloungers know any of the behind-the-scenes stuff? You just know there's a shit ton that never makes it into the press!
I'm surprised he's still alive really - crystal meth really has a hold on him. Few here have fallen from so high. Imagine how the poor bastard's family must feel. Awful.

R304 Camilla got turkey slapped by John & Ashley, which caused a furor, all the while Rita the previous season got turkey slapped in more vivid detail by Heath's long circumcised cock yet no one gave a shit. You also had Michael draping his circumcised cock on Gianna's face after pole dancing, and Christie (with the pockmarked face caked in makeup) and Vesna oggling the guys comparing cocks (Dean had the biggest flaccid and thick too) and Hotdogs was running around grabbing guys dicks. Glenn also full out fucked or finger banged Geneva under a doona in the kitchen and Kate (who was best friends with actress Gillian Alexy) made homophobic comments which Tim chastised her for. Michelle also got fucked.

His personal webpage is still up online but no one offers him work anymore as he’s 74 and entered his own world of misty memories.
And he must have some good memories too— directing a movie which grossed $130,000,000 and dating this muscular leather-man named Rex Cramphorn who was a self-acknowledged ‘sex-pig’ back in the days of free love and free sex.

R46, R59, The movie was called Head On, and he was not playing a gay man in that movie. He played a Greek bisexual man who didn't have a good relationship with his father in the movie. He was attracted to a girl in the movie and he gave her oral sex. He was a bisexual whore. At the very end of the movie, he is narrating as himself, and he comes to the conclusion that he is "simply a whore", and the movie ends like that.
by Anonymous | reply 414 | June 24, 2019 10:45 AM |
Jones has pretty much lived in the closet his whole life.
Yes, he has surrounded himself with pretty young things and usually handsome, troubled sporting figures but I don't think he has ever had a fulfilling male relationship.
In some ways, I think he has this underlying pathological resentment of gay culture today that has had so much more acceptance that was denied to him from his distorted perspective.
A pathological stance of if I could never find love, then so you can't either.
And if you do, then life has to be difficult for you as it was for me.
And of course his perspective is all of his own making and not necessarily reality..

The Australian Christian Lobby has launched a new fundraising page for Israel Folau and donated $100,000 to his legal efforts — and it’s drawing an incredible response.
The page was launched overnight and quickly climbed past $253,000 by 8.45am (AEST) as Australians woke and started donating.
It looks capable of passing the donations made to his original page — which reached upwards of $750,000 before it was shut down — inside a day

Agreed R424 The nasties in the Christian church are digging their own grave in the long run. Christianity is already seen as synonymous with ignorance and hatefulness to a lot of people. Gay people are more integrated in Australia than ever before. Most straight people now lay claim to gay family and friends and work mates. We're no longer the scary monsters we were thought to be. It's only the right wing snowflakes who are terrified that their heterosexual/white/male/Christian domination is under threat of being taken away from them that still fear us. I think most Australians actually view religious people with some degree of suspicion as it is.
by Anonymous | reply 426 | June 24, 2019 11:22 PM |
It wasn't even about religious freedoms or homosexuality, it was all about breaking the stipulations of his contract. They can raise all the money in the world for him and it won't help him, he broke his contract.
I've always wondered how Alan Jones can have so much influence and I wonder if when he was speech writer for Fraser, was he privy to the private lives of closeted high ranking homosexuals? Jones has a boyfriend who lives in Toowoomba and owns land adjacent to that of the wealthy Wagner family. He, Jones' boyfriend, had a falling out with the Wagners and that's why Jones attacked them on radio and subsequently had to go to court. Jones has a lot of very rich and influential friends and his following are largely older conservatives who would leave him in droves if he admitted he was gay. Jones is good friends with Ian i'm not gay Thorpe. Jones had to leave an influential Sydney boys school where he taught and was a boarding house master for getting too close to the boys. I don't know how this and the incident in the London toilet don't haunt him in the media, someone is protecting him.
Christopher Pyne, of course, is gay. Napolean Pedis is gay and was in a lavender marriage till recently. Wouldn't surprise me if Alex Perry was too he pings to high heaven.

The Falou stuff is really just the revenge of the anti SSM brigade.
They went around spreading falsehoods and claiming they were the silent majority.
WRONG. You were but merely a third. Two thirds of the populace rejected you and now you are going down this path.
Well and good. Waste your millions in futile court cases.
The power paradigm has changed and a secular society will no longer tolerate the State of the Church dictating all morality and public policy.

Folau is:
"Pray the gay away, don't admit there is bisexuality. Blame the gays for your impure thoughts. They are the devil's agents making you fantasize about other men. It's hard to remain faithful to my wife so I will blame the gays."
A large proportion of internet gays in Australia:
"Folau, he's really gay. No such thing as bi. Anyone with the slightest bit of same sex attraction is a total closet gay. I can be as creepy as I want and hit on much younger strangers online. I only like young guys. I'm miserably invisible to hot young guys, My fantasy is sex with a married tradie in footy shorts. I don't really like gay men they are scumbags. "

I find that Australians in general likely to be racist and homophobic under the cloak of just “telling it like it is”. It’s really very jarring how many would spew racist shit to you assuming you agree just because you’re white. If Australia was part of the United States, they’d be a guaranteed vote for Trump and the Republican Party.

Australia is, has always been, and will continue to stay, a massively homophobic country! Men in Australia push heterosexuality and heterosexual masculinity and behaviour, more than any other nation on the planet. It's miserable and difficult in Australia for every homosexual guy. A lot travel or move overseas because of how bad homophobia is in Australia.
by Anonymous | reply 438 | June 25, 2019 4:27 AM |
It's the bogan convict mentality; toxic masculinity and a hatred of anything remotely cultural, artistic or academic. Bogan, roided up, heavily tattooed tradies and football players head up the social hierarchy here.

Look up Isaac Butterfield on YouTube, and notice how massive his following is. Every homosexual guy in Australia has to encounter and put up with fucking homophobic bogans like him, in day to day life. Most Australians, especially Australian males, are like this and ridicule homosexual men regularly in all different settings. It's entertainment to/for them.
by Anonymous | reply 443 | June 25, 2019 4:41 AM |
Butterfield looks like your typical bogan dickhead but I do remember watching a video he did on same sex marriage where he surprised me by supporting it, but I do know what you mean. Sometimes homophobia can be a class/intelligence thing, or lack there of, if that makes sense?

I think it depends where you live. I live in inner city Melbourne. I don’t encounter homophobia. I’d say racism is more prevalent. I live next door to two AFL players who know I’m gay and don’t care. They’ve invited me to their parties and they have a couple of gay friends. Recently I was in a hardware shop in Fitzroy, a guy with a full beard and wearing a dress came in, bought some paint and other crap then left. I expected the two guys behind the counter to snigger or roll their eyes after he left, nope, they just went right back to talking about football. They didn’t flinch.
ONTH go to far North Queensland and you may as well go to Alabama. A guy was racist to my face while I was holidaying up there. It depends on where you live, like anywhere else in the world.

According to your logic, as long as the homosexual guy is hot and not sleazy, heterosexual Australian men will welcome him with open arms. You are a fucking idiot. They will treat you like shit regardless, simply because you are a homosexual male. Lesbians in Australia get elevated though.
by Anonymous | reply 454 | June 25, 2019 5:14 AM |
I don't think all Australian men are homophobic, a lot just don't care. I find the younger generation more accepting. It can depend on class, intelligence, socioeconomic and religious background as to your attitude towards homosexuality. I do find however that a lot of Australian men aren't homophobic so much as they're effeminate- phobic. If you look and behave masculine and you're gay, you're ok, but if you look and behave effeminately, you're not. Unfair, but true. You've just got to be very careful who you let in your life.
by Anonymous | reply 455 | June 25, 2019 5:18 AM |
R453: Australia has 25 million people idiot, and secondly, I'm an Australian homosexual male who was born and raised here. I know more about the Australian culture than you, and the homophobic spirit and mindset is very much celebrated amongst A LOT of heterosexual dudes here. Even a lot of homosexual guys engage in the same high level of homophobia here, because it's very prevalent in Australia. Of course not all 25 million Australian's are homophobic, that's fucking obvious. But at least half, or almost half, are very homophobic. You notice it frequently in Australia no matter where you go here, or where you live here.

They just cant help themselves, gossiping, backstabbing cunts who cant get past your sexuality to see you as a person. In their eyes all they can see is anal sex and that's all you will ever be to them.

by Anonymous | reply 461 | June 25, 2019 5:46 AM |
They are vile bitches, but why? I don't find the straight women in other English speaking countries homophobic, most are understanding as they too like men. Is it because these cunts very rarely travel out of Australia to experience different cultures etc, therefor they're very naïve and ignorant. Or is it because they know you could never like them? I've encountered a few very good looking women in the workplace who don't like me because, unlike straight men in the office, their feminine charms don't work on me and they don't have me wrapped round their little finger.

R462: It's because they know you aren't remotely interested in them or attracted to them in any way, that brings out their true vile nature! Australian heterosexual women just can't handle it the most compared to other English speaking women, when a guy who is truly homosexual doesn't want them in any way. And yes, they go into extra vile mode when they realise none of their attempts work on truly homosexual men who will never be attracted to them or want them whatsoever.

Instead of explaining properly why you feel the way you do, you call everyone a cunt, accuse most people of being homophobes and racist while not giving a single example of why you feel this way and not seeing the irony of then following it up by being completely sexist. You disregard any other people’s experiences because it doesn’t align with sweeping generalisations. You sarcastically imply that I don’t know anything about your life, but amazingly it turns out you know the inner thoughts of every other Australian, including whether they’re from convict stock which you couldn’t possibly know. The hypocrisy is strong.

The straight women and men in Australia who are the embodiment of vile homophobia, take turns though in outdoing each other on who's the most homophobic. Homosexual men are ridiculed tremendously by both of them, whether the gay guy is masculine or not. I've seen it endless times.

In reference to Alan Jones; you have to understand him in the context of his time and generation. He knew he was gay, he was also very ambitious. Anyone of his age/generation who was gay and wanted to be successful, especially in the public eye, had to supress and or deny their homosexuality. Michael Kirby wanted to enter politics but knew if he didn't have a wife and kids and if his sexually was exposed, it would be hopeless, and he wasn't prepared to fake a marriage and so settled for a career in law. Milly McMahon was apparently gay and not even Julian's father.

Apparently Billy McMahon used to parade around nude in the change rooms of sports club. He'd stand there and start up a conversation with a stranger buck naked, towel hanging over his shoulder. Once he got punched in the face and got a black eye as he was coming on too strong to someone. This was before he was Prime Minister.
Don Dobie, the member for the seat of Cook, was McMahon's longtime lover and when McMahon was PM Dobie was appointed a special position of Assistant Minister assisting the Prime Minister.

I saw Thorpe at an airport once, he wasn’t out of the closet yet. I saw him from behind so initially had no idea who he was, but he stood out because he was tall and very broad. His arms were huge. I knew it was a gay man because he was wearing an expensive skin tight, cream coloured jumper, the kind a straight man would never wear. He eventually turned around and I realised it was Thorpe. I remember he looked miserable. He seemed uncomfortable with people looking at him, but even if you had no idea who he was he stood out because of his height and body and that alone attracted attention.

R525 I don't find Thorpe physically attractive but I felt sorry for him from the time he was just a confused kid of 13.
Channel 7 signed him to an exclusive contract and he was constantly followed by a cringe-making middle-aged female interviewer who constantly badgering him about potential-girlfriends.

[quote]Has anyone else heard about the Mark's Park beat murders in Sydney in the late 80's early 90;s? A bunch of meatheads went round bashing and killing gay men at Mark's Park. They called it 'rolling fags' whereby they rolled the bashed men off the cliffs to their deaths. About 25 were murdered or went missing this way including a newsreader called Ross Warren. No one was ever convicted of anything and apparently the cops were just as homophobic and corrupt and didn't care anyway.
My friend was large on the gay scene in Sydney at that time, and he knew several of the other murdered gays. It went unstopped over many years so paranoia was understandably rampant and it ended up going fever-pitched according to my friend. Surprisingly, there was not a lot of mainstream attention of these deaths, at least outside of Sydney.
My friend remembered it like it was yesterday, and when he told me about it, it was the only time I ever saw him fearful even though I was not familiar with it. There were apparently many rumors, and it just about killed the entire gay scene as it was starting to go mainstream. In the end, it did create a lot of solidarity and acceptance as well as fear.

He could still be alive since only his keys were found at the base of a cliff at a Tamarama gay beat in 1989. His body was never found though the deputy state coroner, in 2005, ruled Mr Warren was a homicide victim.

I saw Ian Roberts in Newton about 13 years ago. I had just moved to Sydney from Melbourne so realised that I recognised his face, but couldn’t place him from where. I must have been staring at him because he glared at me in a “what do you want” way. My bf realising that my Victorian eyes couldn’t quite place a NSW rugby league player whispered that’s Ian Roberts the only footballer on earth to have turned out to be gay. I had to stifle a laugh for fear Ian would think I was laughing AT him, rather than the absurdity that there was only one gay footballer across all the codes of football, and kill me on the spot. He was with a guy who wasn’t a skinny twink as posters seem to think he favours, but the guy was very good looking. Certainly better looking than Ian, but Ian had a great body. He looked more like an AFL player than a bulky league player.

R528 I thought the Bananas in Pyjamas were both gay? I got 'gay best friends' vibes, but they might have been a couple originally.
SBS did a good miniseries (and also documentary) about the late 80s early 90s gay bashings, especially along the coast. The series was called Deep Water (starring Yael Stone, Noah Taylor, and William McInnes).
Speaking of Yael Stone, what do we all think about the Geoffrey Rush situation? Is he guilty or innocent? The original accuser (Eryn Norvill)'s story was a bit wishy-washy. I mean I could imagine it but I don't think it would have held up in court. Respected figures like Judy Davis went to court to vouch for his character. But then Yael Stone came out with her own Rush story, and Lebanese hottie Firass Dirani (Househusbands, Underbelly, etc.) wrote on his instagram story alluding to the fact a "known scumbag in the industry" got off scot-free (and then deleted it).

R542 I believe Geoffrey Rush is quilty via the testomony of Eryn Norvill & Yael Stone. Judy Davis' testimony means nothing simply because she was a big star before Rush was and he would not have dared tried any of that shit around her - she'd rightfully rip his balls off. So Ms Davis really wouldn't have anything to tell the court because Rush is a sleazy shit who only targeted young up and coming actresses.

Re Billy McMahon: if memory serves me correctly, when he finally lost government the headline on The National Times was "Gay Lib Steps Down". There was as big a fuss about it at the time as there could be when the people fussing really didn't want to call any more attention to it.
Judy Davis has always been scary, as well as highly respected. I don't know anything for certain about Rush, but most predators target the vulnerable, not someone who's a bigger star than them with a rep for metaphorically kicking you in the balls if you look at her sideways. I do find it hard to see why Yael Stone would have come forward if her story weren't true.
The poorly understood thing about the Rush case was that what the court was asked to find was not whether he was innocent, but whether the newspaper defamed him. As far as I could see, the prosecution case was all about their not having enough facts to have gone to print. They tried to get STC's records under freedom of information laws, but the judge stopped it by saying they had no right to do that AFTER being charged with defamation (and it kinda proved the prosecution's point). So the article was found to be defamatory, but not because Rush was found not to have done anything, which was not a question before the court. I haven't read the judgment, so I stand to be corrected by anyone who has, but from the news reports that's what I understand.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | June 25, 2019 2:23 PM |
R545 Thanks for the explanation, i'm not very good at following court cases / legalese! I agree that based on what Yael said especially (and even Firass who might have some industry knowledge - gossip tends to travel) it's probably true that he's been at least a bit pervy and inappropriate. It's not like Rush is suing or attacking her for defamation.
Either way it was the very left-wing (and frankly poor excuse for journalism) Daily Telegraph that got sued so not exactly a terrible result.
Judy was brought in as a character witness, having made about 5 films with him and done several plays as well. Of course no smart actor would try anything on her, she's fought back against very powerful film people (like David Lean) in her time even before it was popular and when she wasn't even 'in' Hollywood. But for such a private person, who barely leaves her Birchgrove garden, it was odd to me that she would show up for him, even if they happened to be friends. Her and Colin Friels' son was just arrested in Sydney the other week for assault (a drunk bar fight over sport apparently). I'm sure she was furious.
PS thread creator - we may need a part II soon! Thanks.

FWIW, the Geoffrey Rush case was about defamation. The Telegraph claimed they didn’t defame Rush, they were just reporting.
The fact that their front page headline was “King Leer” and not words to the effect of “Actor Geoffrey Rush accused of X...” proves Rush’s case.
by Anonymous | reply 551 | June 26, 2019 9:33 AM |
R551 You are correct but what sucks the case was that judges summary he criticised Eryn Norvill as something along the lines of unreliable. This in my view a gross statement as Norvill never went to press, did not want it to be public knowledge, ect.
That The Daily Tele is appealing based on the judges comments are justified. The whole case was about The Tele defaming Rush and any criticisms that the judge had should have been solely in relation to The Daily Telegraph, not the alleged victim who had absolutely no hand in The Tele's reporting.
Anyway, Rush's career is over but boy I feel very sorry for Eryn Norvill as she is the real victim here.

R550 Wow the daughter looks exactly like Colin as well. Not awful looking but his features definitely suit a male face more than a female one. Dead @ Judy not even bothering to do her hair for whatever event that is. It actually looks like the same dress she went to the golden globes in however many years earlier.
I also feel for Norvill. Her career is probably dead now, given that she still hadn't broken through into the screen industry and on stage the majority of work was with STC, specifically Rush's friends Kip Williams and Neil Armfeld. She's in that awkward early 30s age range too where she won't be able to get a lot of 'mum' roles.
by Anonymous | reply 553 | June 26, 2019 11:09 AM |
Maybe a move a move stateside would benefit Norvill. I could see a TV show taking her on (partly) for the positive publicity.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | June 26, 2019 11:13 AM |
I agree totally with R552. It looked to me like Norvill just did the right thing (she took the complaint to HR) and someone else leaked it. It was not till the world ganged up on her that she seemed to determine to have her day in court.
Mind you, Eryn Norvill, while perfectly OK, does not routinely set the stage on fire, so her career may not have taken off in any case. However, there are plenty of women directors in film and showrunners in TV (to the extent that there is any local drama made), and they are quite likely to take her up.
Rush's career being over or otherwise is rather moot at his age, but I wouldn't be so sure. He has powerful friends, certainly in Australia, and you don't have to make money consistently in subsidised theatre. My bet is if word got round he was giving a great performance people would go, especially since the press hooted that he'd been vindicated by the court.
A really interesting sidelight on this is that the primary complainant in the Craig McLachlan harassment case, the brilliant Christie Whelan-Browne, has worked with Rush several times, in both straight plays and musicals, and I didn't see any comment from her on the Rush matter. She lacks Norvill's naivety, so my guess is McLachlan has a fair bit to answer for.

R555 I'm a bit confused by the McLachlan/Whelan-Browne harassment case. He is also making claims that she sexually harassed him, both on and off stage and also made comments about his genitals.

We had a family friend who worked on Neighbours when Craig McLachlan was on it. He always said that Craig’s nice guy public persona was an act. Not a nice guy at all in reality. Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis and Colin Friels were all at NIDA together. So was Mel Gibson. That 1977/78 graduate year was a golden one for the drama school. No surprise if they're all still close and supportive now. And as someone mentioned above, Erin Norville confided to a staffer at the Sydney Theatre Company about Rush's sleazy behavior then it became front page headlines... Irrespective of what Rush did, someone in the Company betrayed her trust. She was done over twice.

R573, please go and tell the rest of the DL to stop gossiping about Judy Garland and Bette Davis, on the grounds that they were straight. WTF?
Geoffrey Rush attended the Jacques le Coq school of clowning and mime in Paris: no theatre schools in Australia. Judy and Mel were in the same year at NIDA, and I can't imagine that they got on. In case everyone hasn't noticed, Mel's a terrible actor and they had to play Romeo and Juliet. They've never acted together since leaving NIDA.
Colin Friels was there at the time but not in their year. Steve Bisley, Goose in Mad Max, is the other famous graduate of Mel's year.
I don't remember Rush and Gibson ever appearing on the same stage, but will be happy to concede if you can name something. I also don't remember Rush and Davis on stage together as someone said upthread, though they've made at least two films. (Rush and Blanchett together on stage, yes, though maybe only once - ironically, in Oleanna.)
by Anonymous | reply 584 | June 27, 2019 12:22 AM |
R584 There was actually a documentary made in 2008 about that group, called the 'Class of 77' (Mel Gibson, Judy Davis, Steve Bisley, Debra Lawrence, Robert Menzies, Wayne Jarratt and Annie Byron, etc.), made by one of the female classmates. Judy chose not to participate or comment on it... lol. Even Mel appears and gives on camera interviews. If you go to NIDA to this day there are framed photos of productions there from this era, including the Romeo and Juliet featuring Judy and Mel.
My mistake, it appears Rush and Davis haven't been on stage together (I did see them doing a poetry reading together for charity a few years back though). But yes have made several films together (Swimming Upstream, The Eye of the Storm, Children of the Revolution, Hoodwink) and both share a lot of friends and collaborators in common.
Ausstage is a good guide but they are missing a fair few as well (including the two plays Judy recently directed at NIDA, and some of the other early ones).

I’m guessing that suggestions Judy hates Mel is fanfiction. She said in interviews he was very funny and good-looking. Given she said that much, If she thought worse of him, we would know. When he presented a film about 5 years ago at the Sydney Film Festival, Judy was on stage with him prior to presenting awards to short filmmakers and chatted away with him.
