The first year they showed the Nurses Ball was the year Luke and Laura returned and they both attended. She attended a few in the first years. One year Luke and Lucky performed with Mary Mae Ward - that was when the NB was really good not the shitfest it is now. There was also no dumb red carpet.

I think Maura's performance just shows how good an actress she is. Like any good trouper, she figured, "Okay, I'm not a singer, but I am an actress so I'll just throw everything into the performance." You can tell she had a blast. I imagine her running home to her husband later and laughing about it.

I agree R226 and R227. Based on how afraid Helena really was of Valentin, his character never lived up to the hype. While I like JPS, I never was happy with him as Valentin - at least not how he has been written.

Before he ever showed up, in my head I pictured Valentin as a combo of say Stefano and Victor from DOOL. He’d be fiercely protective of his, and what he has - but a deadly menace to anyone he considered a threat. There would be some part of him that a few would see, and they’d overlook some of his actions; but most would be scared or wary of him.

There’s still so many storylines left unanswered for Valentin - his relationship with Alexis/Natasha, and his connection to her mother; who his mother was; what happened to Claudette; did he and Nikolas concoct the latter’s staged death? (If so, having Nik come back as a Stefano/Victor character would work for me); what other nefarious dealings was he up to between leaving the WSB and showing up on Cassidine Island; etc..

But, I suppose we need to accept that there won’t be any front burner storylines that don’t involve the mumbling midget, his Amazon moll, and their two sidekicks as either participants or the ones who solve it all.

A quick question for other longtime GH viewers - didn’t Mikos have a brother and sister? I believe Alexis was raised in his sister’s family. Anyone, if Mikos did, isn’t that an avenue to bring on or at least reference some Cassidines?

My memory of Cassadines:

Tony (Andre Landzaat) appeared first, he was kind of a mysterious businessman in Port Charles, and actually was going by the name Tony Castle. I seem to recall he dated Lesley a couple of times while she and Rick were on the outs, nothing serious though. Then he took up with Alexandria Quartermaine, and at some point we learn he was involved in the search for the Ice Princess. I want to say Tony debuted in the winter/spring of '81.

Then when Luke, Laura, and Robert start chasing the Ice Princess that summer, Victor (Thaao Penghlis) shows up. We find out he's Tony's younger brother, and involved with Tiffany Hill. I think at that time we learn that Tony Castle was Tony Cassadine. Or maybe that had already been revealed? I don't know. I'm old.

Finally, later that summer we get Mikkos (John Coliscos) who was really Count Baltar on Battlestar Gallactica, you can't fool me General Hospital. Mikkos was the oldest brother, and the one in control of the whole weather machine that had Steve and Jessie wringing their hands in angst back in Port Charles.

By the time I went back to school in September 1981, I think all three brothers ended up frozen in their ice chamber (Alex Q, too!), which was fine by me, because I was more interested in dreamy Noah Drake, and Rose hiding Hutch in the basement of Kelly's and WHO THE FUCK KILLED DIANA TAYLOR ALREADY?

Then Liz Taylor sashays onto the screen and Tony Geary's heart as Helena, widow of Mikkos, in November of 1981, and that's what I remember of early Cassadines.

What they submit is changed by Frank, then by Nathan, then the rewrites are changed and then changed again. GH also has a few actors with story approval, so if the story changes in any way based on what they were pitched, the actor can shut it down. I won't name any names, but one actor started playing a certain story thinking it was going to lead to an Emmy, he then put the kibosh on the whole thing because he didn't like the way it was playing out and so everything had to be rewritten. The story was about family and what is family and what have given him so meaty material if he was patient, but he said nope and it all stopped.

Also Frank doesn't have his writers backs. He will throw them under multiple buses.

Also, GH seems to have more money for sets. Y&R is the number one rated soap, but their sets seem to be vanishing and shrinking, and you rarely get more than three or four sets in a show whereas GH uses several. Either, FV is really a wizard at stretching a budget or ABC hasn't cut the budget as much as the other ones have. Maybe, it is just because GH is the only network owned soap, still on the air, and records at a network owned studio, which cuts out the middle men taking some of the money. It is just that I remember as a child Y&R was the most expensive looking soap, but I think GH has surpassed them now.

I imagine they’d be flying back from sorting out the whole DOD story. If anyone needs to survive, I’d allow Carly and Alexis to live. Carly suffers a personality change from the trauma of losing Sonny, Michael, and the baby she’s carrying. Carly will turn to booze. Alexis would be similarly devastated but will turn to Valentin, looking for more info about her mother and the Cassidines to avoid/deal with her grief. Drew would want to raise Danny with Scout at the Quartermaines. Jax will lean on Nina for support in helping Josslyn deal with this tragedy. Monica and Bobbi will be devasted too, but will have conflict when Monica supports Jax over Bobbi. Carly’s drinking gets worse and her suppressed grief, as well as her guilt over her life leads her to try and make amends all over Port Charles, surprising the citizenry with her 180 changed demeanor. All this will lead to a full on breakdown, she’s institutionalised, and only Franco and his art therapy seems to reach her, eventually heal her. Oh and Brad’s secret remains safe - for now.

R567 Yes, Sam has reasons for a NORMAL person to hate or dislike Julian. But, as she is a criminal, who is in "love" with a criminal, and who is close friends with a criminal it is a little much for her to be so anti-Julian, and Franco for that matter. Julian's worse deeds towards Alexis, was to protect the rest of the family from his CRAZY sister, but she fails to take that into account. Just like she fails to take Franco's tumor into account. Yet, she, Jason, and Sonny doesn't really have any legitimate excuses for the vast majority of their misdeeds.

Gloria Monty always gets the credit for saving GH, but Doug was the writer when the show went from near cancellation to number two in the ratings! Pat Falken Smith picked up the ball and ran with it to number one.

Susan Brown and Marland were pals. He wrote her onto ATWT at one point.

I couldn't believe in 2019 on GH we'd get a scene with Lesley and Monica (both widowed now) recalling their famous feud.

I have read several times that Doug Marland was dead set against redeeming Luke after the rape when Monty wanted to go with the 'seduction' story. In fact, I think that was a huge part of his leaving.

I think everything about her would, not just the scars, most of all her voice and lack of talent. Then again lack of talent hasn't stopped soaps from hiring in a couple of decades at least.

I think the character of Maxie could’ve been so much more than a vapid “fashionista” with constant men problems considering who her parents are. But KSt doesn’t have the range. And her voice makes me hit mute.

Doug's shows had that feel of peering into a town where people worked, went to dinner, had lunch with friends, got up in the morning; people would run into each other unexpectedly as they do in real life.
