If only. I'm a lifelong, incurable procrastinator. Somehow, though, I never miss important deadlines, which is probably why I have never made any serious efforts to mend my ways. But I'm the worst procrastinator I know.

I ended up at my nephew’s school today to see him get an award. Long boring story how I ended up going along, however before my nephew received the award, I saw a small boy play a bit of Mozart on the violin r23. It was clunky, but he tried. This was followed by another kid drumming away to some rather hard rock. It would have all been utterly excruciating if a small girl, around 7 years old, hasn’t stood up, started playing air guitar and head banging. She was really feeling it. It really made me laugh. I hope you enjoy your music appreciation class as much as that little girl enjoyed that drumming.

London.
A put a little tree in at the end of my tiny garden, back in 2006-ish - it's now bigger than my house. This year it seems to have especially grown, in all directions. My neighbour suggested I cut it back last year. I had no idea it would grow so tall. But I like the privacy it gives me at the back...and it's not even on her side.
My little cherry tree has also grown very tall. Had no idea cherry trees grow so tall. But it's not as thick and bushy as the other tree. Tons of cherries this year. I wonder if I'll be able to get some before the birds. The wood pigeons already seem to be snacking on it.

Procrastinator at R12 here. I'm happy to have inspired R14 to make the phone call he'd been putting off. It's just the sort of task I would have procrastinated about. But it's not that I procrastinate over everything. For example, I seldom put off menial chores. I hope this won't sound judgmental toward R15 (because, really, I'm something of a mess), but I could never leave unwashed dishes in the sink. I'm actually a little OCD in that way.
As for R13's question about what makes us procrastinate, someone once told me that procrastinators are actually perfectionists who know that anything they ever achieve will never match their own high standards, so we put off doing tasks until the last minute, because, that way, we can't feel bad about having done a less-than-perfect job. It may be bullshit, but "perfectionist" sounds so much better than "lazy slug."

I just used my grill for the first time in three or four years. London.
Had all these alarming messages come up on the screen in my car about the tyre pressure. Turns out there was a nail in my tyre.
Had to get two new tyres and some sort of re-balancing procedure - cost a lot of money.
Went to a fancy deli for lunch while they fixed it. Had a chicken pie and a typical spastic "English" salad ( a few leaves of some sort)- the pie was absolutely inedible. I told the girl but they didn't do anything and I didn't pursue it. Didn't feel like making a fuss.
Went into a health food store. I bought some fancy (again with the fancy) flour and "sourdough starter" - I'm going to continue trying to make bread after my last failure.

[quote]How does one shirr an egg?
It's a lah-di-dah term for baked eggs. To make two, I used two buttered ramekins (custard cups), poured a teaspoon of heavy cream in each, and then broke an egg into each one. (Use a spoon to get the yolks in the center.) I then added salt and pepper, minced chives and a bit of grated Parmesan to each. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the whites are set but the yolks aren't. You can find many variations, including using bacon and ham. Some recipes add bread crumbs to the buttered ramekins. Let them set for a couple of minutes before serving. If you want to make more than two, you can also use a muffin tin.

Oh, dear! I made cheeseburgers this evening. I'd bought an organic mince (see, this is why I call myself London) - top quality. But I guess it was very low fat meat and it tasted very heavy. Not nice at all. I could see there was no fat when I cooked it. I'm going to throw the rest of it out. I was going to use it for my version of Bolognese. But who wants a heavy Bolognese?
by Anonymous | reply 90 | May 8, 2019 9:35 PM |

R90, if you haven't thrown that mince out yet, try just lightly sauteing it then simmering it in some milk until the milk evaporates. This is from America's Test Kitchen and it is pretty good. Their recipe calls for 1 cup of whole milk. The recipe is Weeknight Bolognese.

5 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
2 tablespoons minced carrot
2 tablespoons minced celery
12 ounces meatloaf mix
Salt and pepper
1 cup whole milk
1 cup dry white wine
1 (28‑ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes, drained with juice reserved, tomatoes chopped fine
1 pound fettuccine or linguine
Grated Parmesan cheese
1. Melt 3 tablespoons butter in Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onion, carrot, and celery and cook until softened, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in meatloaf mix and 1/2 teaspoon salt and cook, breaking up meat with wooden spoon, until no longer pink, about 3 minutes.
2. Stir in milk, bring to simmer, and cook until milk evaporates and only rendered fat remains, 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in wine, bring to simmer, and cook until wine evaporates, 10 to 15 minutes.
3. Stir in tomatoes and reserved tomato juice and bring to simmer. Reduce heat to low so that sauce continues to simmer just barely, with occasional bubble or two at surface, until liquid has evaporated, about 3 hours. Season with salt to taste. (Sauce can be refrigerated for up to 2 days or frozen for up to 1 month.)
4. Meanwhile, bring 4 quarts water to boil in large pot. Add pasta and 1 tablespoon salt and cook, stirring often, until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup cooking water, then drain pasta and return it to pot. Add sauce and remaining 2 tablespoons butter and toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste and add reserved cooking water as needed to adjust consistency. Serve with Parmesan.

I know Target also carries some deeper sheets - 18" sheets in one brand and 20" in another. 18 seemed to be too short; 20 worked, but at some point Target changed it so they no longer sold individual 20" fitted sheets and they were only available as part of a set.
Macy's had deep sheets in their Hotel brand, but those sheets were $150+ and for that much, the sheet would have to also make the bed and fellate me as I slept!

All these places that had years of drought, seem to be having masses of rain these days.

It's better than an addiction to doughnuts, at least.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | May 9, 2019 4:04 PM |
I'd much rather eat a donut than pimiento cheese.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | May 9, 2019 7:51 PM |
I don't think I've ever had one of those, r121, but I'll bet I'd like them. I can't buy an entire box of donuts, though. They wouldn't last very long at all. I will occasionally buy one or two at DD, Jelly, Boston Kreme, or Sour Cream. DD opened a kosher DD near my house and in the beginning, they had different flavors of Jelly, including my favorite, Strawberry. Now it's just Jelly. (Jeneric?)

r124 Mmm-hmm.

I’ve gotten old to the point where I can’t enjoy a single cocktail in the evening without it ruining my sleep. I have to plan ahead and factor it in. Last night I had (I swear) one vodka with cranberry juice and I’ve been up since 2 AM and dragged through the workday. So I skipped it tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | May 10, 2019 12:39 AM |
I'm also no spring chicken, R127, but I don't have that reaction. One stiff drink in the evening knocks me right out. It doesn't even have to be very stiff.

I had to quit drinking when I reached that point, r127.

I had a doughnut from a pop up store at the shopping centre. It was great tasting and had vanilla custard cream inside. Thank goodness they’re taking the pop up away next week or it would be too dangerous for me.
I heard a woman asking where they have their actual shop. It’s all the way on the other side of the city. I love doughnuts, but thankfully not so much that I’ve drive 40km for one.

New semester of my painting class today. Every first class, we take stuff in we've been working on as a show-and-tell. I haven't been working on much. I may just bring some collage elements I haven't yet assembled, and a painting on paper I want to recreate on canvas. Yes. That's it. It's going to be pouring out, and I don't want to bring an existing canvas I'm working on.

Wanted to order takeout from an upscale Chinese restaurant here in LA but was told it would take an hour and a half - for pickup, no less. We got In-n-Out burgers instead.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | May 12, 2019 4:33 AM |
Chines food is the kind of thing you want immediately or not at all. I’d have a hamburger instead too rather than wait 90 mins.

I was reading last night about a Chinese restaurant in Bethesda which, if I still lived in DC, would be the very next place I'd like to eat. David Hagedorn, the writer, is a gay homosexual like us. He owned or was the chef at a place on 17th Street once upon a time. He interviewed me a few years ago about the delis of Pittsburgh, where I now live.

"Gay homosexual" is one of my DL expressions, r183. I do not recall if I heard it here first, or even whether anyone else types it here. And "prostitution whore" is from RHONJ. Teresa called Danielle one in the first season, IIRC, and it resonated with us. We have simply brought it over from Bravo.

I got excellent marks at my "annual wellness visit" yesterday. The only thing I need to work on is losing weight. My doctor's new medical student is a woman, but she was awfully nice.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | May 15, 2019 4:02 AM |
That's good news, R243. Congratulations. Losing weight is what I'm always told to work on, also, although I'm not terribly overweight. But mostly I just succeed in not gaining any more weight. As the Red Queen says in "Through the Looking Glass," "Here, it takes all the running you can do to stay in one place."
by Anonymous | reply 244 | May 15, 2019 4:11 AM |
Thanks, r244. I've maintained a 25 pound weight loss over the last ten years, but there's nothing left to "work on," and I think I'd just be more comfortable if I were to lose another 20.

I am going to attempt to listen to all of Shostakovich's String Quartets. Six hours. It's one of my favorite large bodies of music, along with Beethoven's SQs, Mozart's Piano Concertos, and Mahler's Symphonies. I like much of Schubert's music, too, but not all of any one body of it, at least not to this extent.

We have to vote for a new prime minister here in Australia tomorrow. I think there will be a swing to the left. Our current Prime Minister is an evangelical Christian which Australians aren’t big on. In the old days he would have been called a God botherer. Not sure if that expression is only used here, but it means someone who is way too into their religious life. He’s not a big fan of gay marriage either which annoys people. Basically he’s a boring, conservative, bigoted, out of touch fundamentalist religious nut and he only came to power because the last guy was kicked to the curb, so his chances probably aren’t great.

Where did everyone go?
Can you believe another Memorial Day weekend is only a week away? It's a little whelming. It always seems to me that after the "unofficial start of summer," the rest of the year flies by. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, the holidays . . . and another underwhelming year wraps up.
by Anonymous | reply 263 | May 18, 2019 5:04 PM |
Pittsburgh.
I felt so whelmed yesterday, I went to bed when I came home, and woke up at 2:30 am. I'm taking a painting class, and someone joined the class recently who uses oil paint and turpentine on large-ish canvases. I got a migraine that didn't go away for hours (as I said, whelmed).
I'm not sure what to do. Dropping the class is one option. I'm not going on Friday because I'm cooking for a party, so I don't have to make a decision right away, but I can't be in a room with that kind of shit in the air. It makes me so sick.
by Anonymous | reply 264 | May 18, 2019 5:08 PM |
That must really be frustrating, R264. We other Fab Fivers know how much you enjoyed those classes. I hate the smell of turpentine, which my father always seemed to be using around the house for one thing or another when I was growing up.

I rarely get them but when I do I get such terribly puffy ones so that I look like Ive been punched in the face and now have a fat lip. However since I discovered putting tee tree oil is n them it seems to dry them out before they puff up. Fingers crossed it works this time too.

We chose the Dolby theatre, which I found too loud, and thus not worth the extra $$. Taron Egerton was thoroughly convincing as Elton, as was Jamie Bell playing Bernie, but my favorite was Charlie Rowe as Ray Williams, the guy who discovered EJ in the first place.
I wish they hadn't dyed Richard Madden's hair such a harsh black. It overwhelmed. Just as it doesn't matter storywise that Jeffrey Wright was hired to play Hobie in The Goldfinch, the Elton John story was not improved at all by overdyeing Madden's hair this way.
Here's Charlie:

by Anonymous | reply 366 | June 6, 2019 7:24 PM |
Well, it's called Quiche Lorraine in the NYT Cookbook recipe by Craig Claiborne, but Quiche Lorraine isn't supposed to have cheese, and this does. I'm using Jarlsberg instead of Swiss, plus Parmigiano-Reggiano. Plus shallots (I was out of onions) and bacon.
Either Jarlsberg doesn't melt into the custard the way I remember Swiss doing, or I'm not cooking it long enough. But it was "set," so I took it out. It tastes great. The texture just isn't what I wanted.
Also, the recipe called for four eggs, which didn't work well yesterday, so today I used six.

I had a weird attack of vertigo and severe nausea/vomiting on Monday. I'm 66 and this has never happened before. I think it's an inner-ear issue. I went to see my primary care physician on Tuesday and she gave me a prescription for nausea/vomiting and an OTC for motion sickness, and referred me to a specialist--whom I don't get to see until July. So I'm hoping it doesn't come up (literally and figuratively) again before then.

Could it be low blood pressure r66?

Sorry that was for r371?

I've joined the brotherhood of underwhelmed early-wakers. For the past few mornings, I've awakened at 5:30 or 6 a.m. and can't get back to sleep.

Oh, poor you, r358. Where are you located, if it's not too much to ask?

It's the not being able to get back to sleep that makes this such a problem.

R375, I am in Boise, Idaho.
by Anonymous | reply 377 | June 8, 2019 6:53 AM |
Ah, r377. Not somewhere I'm familiar with. Good luck to you.
by Anonymous | reply 378 | June 8, 2019 7:03 AM |
I woke up at 2:56 am, and do not anticipate going back to sleep for some time. I think I shall make a cup of coffee. After about an hour (it's now 3:58), withdrawal kicks in, though I'm not one of those "until I've had my first cup, I AM A BEAR" types.

I have come to enjoy being up all night long. It's more quiet in my urban environment. I listen to gay classical announcer Garrett McQueen on Classical 24 four nights a week.

I don't pay for it, r382.

I watched the Tony Awards last night. I found the musical numbers from current productions very underwhelming. Actually, the whole show was underwhelming. So, really, it fit in perfectly with most things in my life.
by Anonymous | reply 384 | June 10, 2019 10:38 PM |
I found the Tonys so underwhelming, I went to bed at ten. Woke up at 2:30, as usual, then back to bed by 3:30, and up again just before my alarm went off at 5:30.
by Anonymous | reply 385 | June 10, 2019 11:04 PM |
It took me most of Monday to recover from the ordeal that was the Tony Awards.

R371, my bestie got loose crystals in her ear from eating too much sugar. Gave her vertigo and nausea. Went away after she stopped eating marshmallow fluff straight out of the jar. She said that was the real purpose of iced tea spoons. LOL

It is unfortunate that some cunting arose on a thread in which most posters were good-natured and mutually supportive.

There was just one cunt. He could not stop cunting at me. He even cunted at me on another thread because of stuff I'd posted here. So I stopped posting on this thread.

Well I, for one, have been extremely whelmed by looking for an apartment in a city with virtually no vacancies and year-long waiting lists, so my life isn't underwhelming enough to post here.

I'm making angel hair and meatballs for July 4. A friend requested it. Who am I to say no?
by Anonymous | reply 404 | June 27, 2019 7:33 PM |
That sounds good R404. I made bruschetta chicken with angel hair this past weekend.
by Anonymous | reply 405 | June 27, 2019 8:47 PM |
What is bruschetta chicken? It sounds delightful. I love both components.
And more importantly, how do you pronounce "bruschetta"?
by Anonymous | reply 406 | June 27, 2019 8:57 PM |
Brew-shetta. It's got marinated Marzano tomatoes with fresh basil and garlic and parmesan and a balsamic glaze.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | June 27, 2019 9:29 PM |
It's correctly pronounced "brewSKETta." "Ch" sounds like "k" in Italian.
So you put all of that on what, boneless, skinless chicken breasts and roast them? Roast them first and then top them with the bruschetta mixture? How do you do it?

London.
I learned how to make Spaghetti Carbonara the correct way about a month ago. I used to have my own spastic version. But this, the real thing, is unbelievable. I'd happily have it every day for the rest of my life...and it's so EASY to make.
But I have to cool it with all this cooking. I was putting on weight.
by Anonymous | reply 409 | June 27, 2019 10:14 PM |
I got food poisoning from restaurant carbonara one 48-hour period about 25 years ago. I knew the chef and visited the kitchen afterwards, where I saw raw egg yolks sitting on a stainless steel counter attached to the stove. I have not eaten carbonara since.
You are doing yourself a great service by making your own.

I hear you, R409. One benefit of summer's heat and humidity (in the 90s now where I am) is that it makes me feel less like cooking. But when the cooler weather returns, watch out!

I've decided to replace my pasta dishes with lentils or beans. I made a cold chicken curry salad with lentils and it was delicious. I miss pasta salads in the summer but this was a fantastic replacement. Wonder if it would work as a carbonara? How did you make it, R409?

by Anonymous | reply 418 | June 27, 2019 10:38 PM |
R408 The recipe calls for seasoned grilled chicken breasts. I live in a 3rd floor apt and we aren't allowed to have grills on our balconies, so I buy the frozen seasoned grilled chicken breasts (the HEB brand here in Houston are excellent,) You take the tomato marinara (which is 3 cups of diced Marzano tomatoes, 1/2 cup tomato sauce, 2 tsp white wine vinegar, 1/2 cup fresh basil, 1/3 cup olive oil and 4 cloves minced garlic, lots of fresh pepper and a bit of salt) and toss with the angel hair, then top with grilled chicken strips, parmesan and drizzle balsamic glaze over it. It is light and delicious, and not at all high in fat. I'm sure you're right about the correct pronunciation, but I have never heard anyone call it "brusketta" here in the US.

by Anonymous | reply 421 | June 28, 2019 1:36 PM |
R422 Your "bruschetta" mispronouncer has spelling issues, too. The fish is "branzino," not what she typed.
[quote]For some reason, "bronzino" is clear, even though many menus use "bronzini" for one whole fish, and that's what people are most used to.

I found another palatable decaf yesterday: Peet's Mocca-Java (their spelling). Drinking decaf, something I used to make fun of people for, is actually helping me sleep more. My doctor suggested it for lowering blood pressure slightly. I never imagined it would help me sleep.

London.
I had sausages, mashed potatoes and spinach for supper. Came out really well. Key to great mash, get rid of all the water and steam before you mash. I then put the mash in the oven for 30 minutes along the sausages. Result: really great texture. In fact, I don't actually "mash", I whip with a fork with a little butter and milk, plenty of salt and pepper. Top notch French mustard with the sausages.
Fantastic weather. Hot. No humidity. Clear blue skies. Won't last. Never does here.
by Anonymous | reply 439 | July 16, 2019 10:33 PM |
"No humidity" sounds like heaven to me. I'm in D.C., where every time I step outdoors in the summer, I feel as though I'm being hit in the face with a wet blanket.

^^In addition to the humidity, the temperature will be hitting 100 degrees F. here this weekend.
