Lots of yapping.
My old lesbian neighbors loved them, though, so I forgive all.

Do you Yorkies come any larger?

I love this woman who has the same colouring as her Yorkies.

Yes, I think there's a toy version.
I've seen bigger ones, as big as Westies.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 31, 2019 9:15 PM |
Cute. But are they really yappers? I want to get a cute little dog but not a barker. I still don't know what that rules out because I read differing things. A shih tzu? Do they yap? A Coton du Tulear? Chihuahuas yap, because my neighbor had one.
Also, I don't want a breed that's prone to separation anxiety.

Yorkie owner here. I didn't want anything under 5 lbs and chose accordingly. She ended up being 8 lbs (10 lbs when she puts on her holiday weight) and I was very happy because even at 5 lbs I was terrified she would break a leg or someone would step on her. She is very active, jumping off of shit she shouldn't. They are a handful. She is the boss and has to be the center of attention. Also, she is a guard dog-barks when the ring goes off, knocking, phone rings, car is too loud, thunder, etc. Hard to train, has trained me to feed her 4x a day. Easy to groom, bathe. She's a bitch-bossy and demanding and I can't imagine not having her.

I saw this recently. A Yorkie was sitting in the front of this huge car. There was a bit of a commotion going on outside with her owner and the Yorkie was barking away as if to say "What the HELL is going on here?" Real bossy boots.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 31, 2019 10:55 PM |
That is cute, I love both the stories at r6/r7. But that doesn't sell me personally on a Yorkie.
Shih-tzu owners, anyone?

by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 1, 2019 2:04 PM |
Cavalier is the better dog. Is small, doesn't bark, is fairly lazy so doesn't need a lot of exercise. Last but not least, it's very easy to groom.

He was well trained (sit, down, up, shake, roll over). He slept tucked into one of arms every night.
He was my constant companion. I miss him dearly.

i have a yorkie/maltese mix. she has been called the best dog ever. she only barks in the house if someone rings the doorbell. 9 lbs. she is happy to go on walks, but mostly she just likes to sit next to the last person who came in to the room. mine is super smart, knows lots of tricks, not all of them useful.
some of the yorkie mixes are really great.

I had a Teacup Yorkie who lived to be 17.
Very smart dog.
She woke me up one morning at 6 am by climbing on my chest and barking in my face. She then ran to the bedroom door and starting running in a circle. I got up and she then ran to the top of the stairs and spinning around. She kept repeating this until I was downstairs and she's posted at my living room window. There's a silhouette of somebody outside the window....My drunken next door neighbor who was trying to find a way into my house.

You say "passed away" for a fucking DOG? I get annoyed when they use that term for people. The thing DIED, it didn't pass into heaven with little wings.

My brother’s family has a Dorkie rescue that looks a lot like the dog on this pic. She’s the sweetest little love bug (kinda lazy) who is absolutely not yappy and gets along with rambunctious kids and other rambunctious dogs. Such a little sweetheart.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 9, 2019 3:34 PM |
Westies are great. Hardy, spunky, very loyal but prone to grow especially attached to one person. Ours followed my mom everywhere but if she was gone he’d come running to my room for companionship. He barked a lot but he had a “big dog” voice. Sometimes he yapped when he wanted something, so I guess they are very willful lol. We spoiled him.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 9, 2019 3:45 PM |
My first dog was a Yorkie. Miss her to this day. Very affectionate. She wasn't yappy. She did not like thunder at all. She did rule the roost. When we got a Golden Retriever, she made sure to let him know the was in charge. Of course, he was so kind, he deferred to her. Put them down at the same time. The Yorkie was 16, he was 10.

OMG - I could have written exactly this about my Westie.
Also, in later life he got growly with everyone except my mother.
But yes, if she was out of town, we were best friends again.
He was a character!

I'm sorry you have never experienced the love of a dog. People constantly commented to me that they had never seen a dog love someone so much, as mine loved me.
They are not robots. They have a spirit that is as real as yours or mine.

Norfolk terriers look like a large Yorkie/Westie mix. They have the wonderful Westie faces but are a darker color. They are a rarer breed, so expensive. Years ago I had a westie/cairn mix. She was a very smart and loving dog, extremely trainable. Check out Norfolks on line. Apparently they are not such big barkers as some of the other terrier breeds. I saw one recently and her owners were thrilled with her (and she looked a lot like my former pet). Had a friend with a smallish Yorkie that I used to walk occasionally. Very strong little creature--once in sight of home, he would pull me down the street, he was that strong.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 9, 2019 8:53 PM |
r43 here: So I just googled, and the breed I meant was Norwich, not Norfolk. Norwich have the perky ears. They are similar color to most Yorkies but a big bigger and sturdier.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 9, 2019 8:55 PM |
Trouble with Norwich - they used to dock their tails, but it's not allowed anymore and they have these horrid tails that curve over.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 9, 2019 9:01 PM |
^^ ODD - I think that is a Norwich .
THIS is a Norfolk >

They can have a puppy cut or a teddy bear cut, like this:

Yorkie would make an amuse-bouche for this guy's lamb main. Yelp. Small cross breeds (Bichon frise, shih tzu, westie, mini snauzer, border terrier, mini poodle etc) much more practical.

You periodically hear about hawks attacking small dogs in NYC. I remember in one instance, the hawk nabbed a dog on a leash and became periodically airborne until the owner yanked it back.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 11, 2019 10:09 AM |
Well, the one I knew was yappy and quite stupid. And I’m not sure if it was the owner (she was a ditz) or the dog (it was quite stupid, as I mentioned), but he preferred to relieve himself outside.
Human, walking or for half an hour outside: “hmm, I guess he really doesn’t have to go...”
Yorkie, walking in the front door: defecates on the rug.

My parents got one after I left home. Definitely an affectionate lap dog, but that yapping drove me up the fucking wall. I think that their fur needs to be trimmed once a month or so.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | May 12, 2019 5:40 AM |
We have a male Yorkie. He's the second Yorkie that we own, the first one, a female one, passed away a few years prior. Yorkies are lovely! Very cute and, depending on character, also very cuddly. They can be pretty stubborn though. Our current Yorkie is a bit yappy (playing guard dog at home or with other male dogs) but he's not neutered so that might explain it; his predecessor was very calm and almost never yapped. One advantage of Yorkies is that they have hair instead of fur; they don't shed and are pretty compatible for people with allergies.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 12, 2019 6:19 AM |
Yorkies are great lapdogs and can be trained to give pleasure to their female owners.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 12, 2019 6:26 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 74 | May 12, 2019 8:21 AM |

R 72 neuter the dog now. I don’t care if you want breed the dog, the last thing the world needs more puppies. As far the breed, my brother has two. The extra bedroom is where the sneak off and do their business. They'll go outside or in that bedroom, they never learned that outside is where they are supposed go. My brother and his wife put absolutely no effort in training those two. It’s too late. I stayed at their house once, they offered me that bedroom. I slept on the couch.

I think it's better to NOT keep getting the same breed. You end up comparing them all the time, though this is not a commandment.
I had a friend at school. They had boxers. One after the other. All with the same name. It was peculiar.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | May 12, 2019 1:49 PM |
R80, I don't see the need. He's an "only dog", we don't let him off the leash while walking him for legal reasons (it's prohibited where we live), he's under supervision when he's with other dogs. Besides the vet recommended not to neuter him; apparently, newer research has shown an overall increased risk of cancer and behavioral disorders for neutered dogs.
