Bergman is about 65, not in demand for other roles so he would probably play what is written for him. Did he like the cringeworthy Marco Anicelli stuff? He’s an actor. His job is to act what is on the page, not to refuse something because he doesn’t like it. When he gets the title of Producer or Writer, maybe then he has room to pick and choose. Until then, he’s an actor who is paid to stop being a queen and act out the script.

R11 With the recent Abbott family flashbacks, they can't now show Jack having gone to Vietnam. He was shown as a rather young teenager and they were set no earlier than 1972, because the John took the kids to see Bedknobs and Broomsticks at a drive-in. The movie came out in December 1971, which would have been too cold for a drive in in Wisconsin, so it would have had to take place in spring or summer 1972.

He would have, at most, been there for a few months. American forces were being withdrawn starting in 1970 and combat operations ceased in 1973.

I've been surprised at how grimly she's played Phyllis, but it makes me forget about how MS played the character, which is a plus. I'm very sorry to hear that MS is returning. Her Scientology background makes her anathema to me. It's such an evil, evil, cult - anyone who not only belongs to it but actively promotes it like MS does is a huge detriment to any show.

I am disappointed that Michelle Stafford is returning to the show. I like Gina Tognoni in the role so much better. The show seems to be stuck in the past. They've brought back a previous head writer, brought back Doug Davidson (who hasn't had a major story in years), and is now allowing MS to return. Of course I am not an insider, but decisions seem to be made based on personal relationships and not based on what is best for the show (and ratings). Perhaps this is why there are only four soaps left on the air.

I am also not crazy about recasting Nate. I think the actor who played him (Brooks Darnell) was a decent actor, but he was a victim of a lack of a decent story. It seems like the actor is paying the price because the writers lack creativity. I wish Brooks well.

The shows have a loyal audience and many nostalgic fans who may no longer watch it. To cancel a show that’s been on for decades can cause great negativity for many parties involved.

What they do is they erode the audience by making the show unwatchable and create as much unfavorable “buzz” as possible. Then when the show is canceled, the backlash is smaller and more quiet.

This is not just done on soaps. It’s been done on many shows over the years. Television is a business, you are correct. That’s why they are always looking for cheaper productions that can bring in high ad revenue.

Look at the latest lawsuit that Ken Corday filed against Sony. Sony especially is a company that has to cut its costs.

The probably with Y&R is the audience. TPTB don't want to frighten the horses with contemporary storylines and they can't attract a new, younger audience at all. Millennials and Gen Z just do not watch TV the same way as Y&R's core audience does so the ratings will continue to dwindle as viewers die off. The classic network soap opera is obsolete, inexorably headed for extinction. It's fun to offer suggestions and all but it's all ultimately futile.

I think if they can get actors who are insanely popular across other media, they care lure the younger viewers. Case in point, Michael Muhney. He has a huge prime time following that he could bring back to Y&R, and it's maddening that TPTB won't invite him back, just because of one teensy weensy indiscretion. Josh and Tony should approach Michael and plead with him to come back. He can save this show by bringing in non-soap viewers.

I know no one likes FOX News, but over the last few years they have been largely abandoned by traditional advertisers, they have never done great in the demos, they pay their talent astronomically high salaries, yet they are also the most profitable news channels and one of the most profitable cable channels. There are advertisers who would like to target different demographics and the networks would be smart to offer different shows to appeal to the different demographics. They should have learned that lesson when Hee Haw went from CBS to syndication after the rural purge, while the show didn't appeal to the urban young audiences that the network and chic advertisers craved, it succeeded for over twenty years in syndication because it was the perfect vehicle to connect certain advertisers with a certain audience. It was smart to focus soaps on 18-49 women, when women largely stayed at home, but that isn't the case anymore and so the focus needs to shift. In my working class/lower middle class family where men often worked shifts outside of the 9-5 standard, soaps weren't really seen as women's shows anyway. These straight men all watched soaps, because they were their only choice other than gameshows, and included sexy women, criminals, and mysteries. Talk shows were seen as too womanly, though.

There is a reason, we have not seen any further cancellations. Soaps, even with their larger budgets, still deliver higher ratings, and higher ad revenues. Which makes them the better business choice.

I find it funny that Y&R doesn’t know what to do with their actors. The actors go to Days and get lots of buzz and do a great job. Then Y&R wants them back and still don’t know what to do with them.

While Chapman and Rikaart may have gotten lots of buzz on Days, I think you'd find disagreement over whether they did a great job or not.

I'm guessing Rikaart's return to Y&R is just another limited guest stint - probably having something to do with NuNuNuAdam's arrival. .. After all, if Adam is still alive, then that means Chloe didn't murder him, which in turn means she doesn't need to be living anonymously out in Portland as "Helen Jones" with everyone thinking that she committed suicide, including her own mother, Esther.

Bergman gave an interview to Fairman after Staff left & it wasn't very complimentary. He said she threw him under the bus & demanded out of Phack because she wanted a younger screen partner.

Not sure what she'll accomplish back at Y&R, although one assumes that the Billy/Phyllis story killed any chance of Jack and Phyllis reuniting simply on the basis of story.

I don't see her and Thompson having any chemistry. He is much more of a low-key actor, and I suspect with all OTT tics that she would eat him alive on screen.

You know it will be Nick/Phyllis - that's the only reason why Stafford's ego could be swayed to come back.

It's actually comical that she pushes that pairing so hard when Morrow is a horrible actor. Sounds like what Bergman was saying - she only cares about being in a "hot" pairing.

The GH sites are ecstatic that Stafford is leaving. They think she sucks too.

Of course they are. Nina is a horrible character who never fit in and sucked up airtime, only because Stafford is friends with Frank.
