A Star Is Born - Pete Buttigieg.
I'm a Canadian and I can honestly say that I've never been more impressed with a politician or a Presidential candidate in my life. He's the real deal.
A fount of information on just about anything and everything, down to earth, honest, sincerely concerned for the people, level headed with a good past and a great future.
It's as though a Higher Power rolled up the perfect candidate - and out came Pete Buttigieg. And the icing on the cake is that he's openly gay which puts a more human and humane face on him.
Pete has the goods and I can see him as President of the USA someday - PLEASE help to make this happen. This is as good as it gets - something like a miracle.
He came out of nowhere and he's the best of all the candidates running for President.

Nonsense, r7. Read the posts on the other threads about Pete. People are saying....the same exact things. Because he’s that impressive. Even if he were not GAY his ideas would resonate with people here who are just tired of all the chaos and hungry for a candidate who won’t bullshit them and has good ideas and knows how to articulate them and possesses human qualities that we want in a president. Decency. Empathy. Compassion. Honesty. Authenticity. The ability to negotiate from a place of strength. Not a bully pulpit. And as for his inexperience, the same thing was said about Obama. The thing about being really smart is that you are smart enough to hire other smart people to work for you. You have reservations. That is your prerogative. But to tell someone else that their perception is flawed because of your own cynicism is rather foolish. And rude.

Ideal world, though. No way America votes in Stacy/Pete or Pete/Stacy... and if it looks like we would, I assume corruption will tamper with the votes, as they did Stacy's GA election and as they've done in every presidential election since 2000. I dream though!

For the last poster on the previous thread, Mayor Pete came back to South Bend, his home town, to clean up a dying town that was like a small Detroit. The had a Studebaker plant that closed in 1963. It was a company town. After the plant closed, they lost about 25% of the population and there were vacant buildings everywhere.
He started a program of tearing down or fixing up 1000 houses in 1000 days. They set up an app so people could find out how they could buy abandoned houses and get them fixed or torn down for a very low cost.
He helped organize financing so the huge old Studebaker plant could be remade into various businesses. It took a huge amount of money and they’ve been working on it for years. It’s a few buildings and they’ve developed them one by one. They brought a lot of money and business into town, people are not leaving by the droves now and it’s brought in other business. His goal was to bring in some businesses that used the local fiber optics and infrastructure. Income there is still very low, but people are a lot more hopeful and he accomplished a lot to get the falling-apart downtown area updated and open again.
He also worked on a lot of other infrastructure projects locally. He helped out the poor community. He made it easy for a group of low income neighbors to buy an abandoned house, get it torn down and build a park there for example. There were a lot of efforts made for low income people to buy into being a part of the new improvements, so they were invested. He listened to people and created grants to help people that wanted to join in to making community improvements or home repairs but didn’t have the money.
He mentioned in his TED talk on YouTube that he looked at South Bend as something that had to be approached as, “What is already there that can be built on?” From what I’ve read, not much. But he found liabilities that he turned into assets, like the Studebaker plant, which is a big landmark there and was a symbol of decay. Now it’s a symbol of expansion.
I read about him today. When I find a link I’ll post it.

I was impressed to read that when he was tearing down vacant houses too quickly and the owners complained, he slowed down and told the authorities not to tear down houses that were being worked on, instead of going by how many citations there were.
There’s a lot of very poor people there and they didn’t have the means to fix everything right away. And the city budgeted grant money for repairs for low income people.

R119, read the USA Today article upthread. There’s a lot of detail about his tenure as mayor.
He was first elected in 2011. In that time, unemployment in South Bend has gone from more than 11% to about 4%. They’ve worked on bringing business to the downtown area, formerly a bunch of abandoned buildings. He even changed the main drag to slow down traffic and put in a bike path and a median with plants to encourage people to stop and patronize local businesses, instead of just racing through as they did before. It was all done in a very methodical way. They raised private funds to put in a light show on the river at night, and now have a bunch of festivals and events to bring in business. He’s very growth-oriented.
Even the local Republicans say he’s done good.

What I like about him is that he has that “community organizer” vibe Obama had, but instead of putting his efforts towards registering people to vote, he’s putting his efforts towards repairing and improving infrastructure, growth and jobs creation. He’s another policy wonk.
That’s hard for Republicans to be against, so they’ll probably attack him for being gay. But a surprising amount of Republicans might not care about about his gayness.

Great point, r140. Call me a cynic but Biden floating the idea of picking Stacey Abrahms as his V.P. pick before even declaring he’s a candidate is a chess move meant to sew up those votes right out of the gate. I can see Pete picking a woman for Veep because he thinks she would be as asset to his administration. Not just a naked political ploy for votes. Maybe I need to lay off the koolaid but he hasn’t hit a false note in any of his appearances on television. Wallace wanted sound bite answers to his questions and Pete did his thing and ran the board. He’s something else. The 2015 TED talk was so impressive. He has been thinking about these issues for a long time. And walking it the way he talks it in South Bend. Sigh.

I didn’t; had to look it up. It’s apparently a type of Farsi spoken in Afghanistan.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | March 24, 2019 1:51 PM
|
Meaning what, R208: because we don't know what something is it isn't important? I'm glad you looked it up - props to you - but Dari shouldn't count as a language? Or, if you read the story about translating in the hospital in South Bend, knowing it potentially shouldn't matter? I'm not sure of the commonalities, if any, between Dari and Arabic and Somali, which is what most Somalis speak, but it appears from the story he was an effective translator for a terrified mother.
He served in Afghanistan and learned Dari, one of the languages spoken there. Should that be held against him? It may not win him a lot of votes, but if anything it allows him to discuss the US military presence there with more insight into the country, its people, and its problems than 99.9% of the policymakers. He learned Norwegian from scratch because he wanted to read a novelist's work in the original language. That's a kind of intellectual curiosity we need to see much more of in politicians, not less.
I'm sending him money. He's a longshot, sure. He's also young and even if he doesn't win this time, sometimes a failed attempt at the nomination is a good thing: JFK's failure to get the 1956 vice-presidential nod was a blessing because 1: Stevenson lost, and 2: people knew who he was in 1960. Pete is the most impressive candidate I've seen in this cycle from either party (Bill Weld being the only potential Republican candidate I've seen so far that I'd even consider) and I expect he'll be more impressive still in the debates.
He's got a record of accomplishment, too: he's an executive who's worked hard to turn around a dying city in the industrial heartland and he did it by attracting 21st century jobs, not by trying to bring back coal or pander to racists or by trash-talking about his opponents. Even the last name thing isn't a deal-breaker. He's known in South Bend as "Mayor Pete." "Pete for President" and "President Pete" are both easy to say, alliterative, and anti-elitist. And both sound a lot more pleasing to my ears than the words "President Trump."
by Anonymous | reply 210 | March 24, 2019 2:50 PM

I think Pete can do a lot of things with his life, but standing in line for "his turn" for President doesn't not seem like it would interest him. He is trying to seize this moment. He doestn want to wait and then eventually become the "old" in the race whose time is up!
by Anonymous | reply 212 | March 24, 2019 2:57 PM

I think we need a younger President. Society has changed with the speed of light over the last thirty years or so. A younger person is on top of that, an older person isn’t.
It’s not a disparagement on older people, but I’m very concerned about the lack of regulation of Facebook and lack of privacy laws. Right now it’s like if you own any kind of website at all, you’re entitled to know everything about people with no limits. That’s wrong and somebody needs to address it, but Congress is full of old people who take bribes.
That’s just one issue, the main issue that needs to be addressed is that America is resting on its laurels and dropping in every type of ranking by the day.

I wonder how many Bernie gays (and I know plenty) will switch to Pete now. Look, Bernie has some good ideas, and I’ve never hated him. But he’s very, very old,
While I don’t discriminate against anyone’s age, we have to be realistic about the age at which any candidate takes office, and no man is invincible or will live forever.
I want a President who can spend the next 8 years in the WH, who’s not morally corrupt, who’s eloquent, intelligent, experienced and knowledgeable, and who has the desire to learn and think outside the box to help improve our country.
Right now, Pete is the perfect candidate based on my criteria above.

The knives are out. Charles Pierce has a column up about Pete on his twitter feed. Some of the comments are vicious pertaining to his not addressing women’s issues like late term abortion and racism. That he’s some dark trojan horse Republican because talking about how the Democratic party all but abandoned the voters there is subversive and he’s pandering to the Trumpees. Didn’t Bill Clinton warn his wife that ignoring them would be a grave mistake? And wasn’t HE right? For fucks sake, it’s been less than two months since he announced he was forming an exploratory committee and started fundraising to guarantee a place in the debates for fucks sake. He answers the questions he’s asked. Some, like Sunny Hostin, didn’t like his answer regarding reparations. That doesn’t mean he is not interested in the welfare of minorities. Right now he’s trying to introduce himself to the electorate and it’s important that he explain what his priorities and core values are and his vision for the country. One guy, a Beto fan, said Pete was a waste of time and a distraction. Exactly the way I feel about Beto but I wouldn’t go on twitter and say it. He’s taking away some of the thunder from Kamala and Beto. He wouldn’t be able to do that if people were not liking what they are hearing and seeing.

I live out in Mississippi (working on my PhD), and I definitely could see him being a very solid president down the line. The problem is that he isn’t very high profile, and in a crowded contest like the Dem primaries, the people with names you recognize tend to overshadow (Biden, Bernie, Beto, Kamala... they are sucking up way too much attention). Even when he kicked ass on CNN, by the next day the news cycle basically forgot about who he was. I think a lot of how he is going to do is going to be based on how he builds up his national profile going forward

Booker is not going to be the nominee. Nor is Castro, Schultz, Gilibrand, Hickenlooper, and the other three I can’t remember who are not Kamala, Bernie, or Biden. I think Beto and Pete will cancel each other out. But I do believe if Pete starts getting the REPUBLICAN never trumpers interest and positive word of mouth then he has a chance of being in the top four. Of course, considering what the McElrath wrote on twitter that might be a negative for him. Biden is a weird case. Although he wants so badly to be president, he has decades of negative baggage, and shot himself in the foot before declaring he was even in it by floating SA as a possible VP choice. That deliberately coy slip of the tongue not withstanding. Plus, calling Pence a decent guy means he’s going to depend on his old Republican Senate buddies to help him out and that is not going to happen. No more reaching across the aisle for those band of cutthroats. Even for good old Joe.

It's pretty amazing how a guy who was considered a joke, if they had heard about him at all (gay midwest smalltown mayor running for President) as almost nobody knew who he was at the beginning of March, is now polling 3rd in Iowa. In 3 weeks! That's extraordinary.

Possibly not, but the smarts ones here have listened to his message and like it regardless of background. He talks a very good talk, and seems very hard working and a good egg. What’s not to like?

I’m a straight female, r253. I find Beto neither compelling or hot. Pete is impressive. He is a complicated and interesting guy. And he is firing up the imaginations of people on the left and center of the Democratic party and even some moderate Republicans. Particularly the never trumpers. I don’t care what he looks like. How fucking tall he is. Whether he waxes his pubes or bleaches his hole. He’s the only one in the current bunch who isn’t pandering, trying to be too cool for school, or is embarrassing himself. He makes sense, he’s pragmatic, yet he is also something of a visionary. And no one seems to give a damn that he’s gay. Now that is real progress.

R265 he just ran a brutal Senate campaign in Texas. He had 2 televised Town Halls on CNN and MSNBC. All the policies which are currently being discussed were already policy positions Beto had taken in Texas.

|
I just started watching the Town Halls this month. I've seen Pete, E. Warren, Mr. Starbucks, A. Klobuchar, Tulsi Gabbard, & John Delaney.
I want to see Beto new and fresh, not just addressing Texas, but the whole nation. I hope he does one before the first debate. The Town Halls have been cordial and not very adversarial or confrontational, which is a good way to roll out policies before a national audience.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | March 25, 2019 4:22 AM

R264, you can watch any town hall Pete and Robert have done, and you can see that Pete addresses the issues head on, while Robert delivers platitudes and vague responses. The latter is really not ready for prime time.
In addition, the more information that comes out on Beto, the more corrupt he seems. For example, while on the city council, he pushed through a deal that would have benefitted his already wealthy father-in-law. He made no effort to recuse himself.

I live in nyc btw, and if you dont get that we on the east coast and those on the west coast mean crap as far as votes in the next election you are unbelievably ignorant . Its people like you that want to choose super left leaning liberal candidates that cant possibly win in a general election and will give us 4 more years of Trump.
Mayor Pete is super impressive so far and has a lot of qualities that could appeal to those voters we need to win in 2020. The big question is whether his gayness will cancel those out.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” last week, the 37-year-old from South Bend, Ind., made a modest plea: “I do think it’s important for candidates to at least have the option to talk about our faith,” he said. He specifically targeted the idea that “the only way a religious person could enter politics is through the prism of the religious right.”
An Episcopalian and a married gay man, Buttigieg pointed to the core Christian concept that “the first shall be last; the last shall be first.”
He added: “What could be more different than what we’re being shown in Washington right now — often with some people who view themselves as religious on the right, cheering it on? . . . Here we have this totally warped idea of what Christianity should be like when it comes into the public sphere, and it’s mostly about exclusion. Which is the last thing that I imbibe when I take in scripture in church.”

The Episcopals are pretty cool. The priests can marry, they ordain women, they have an annual blessing of the animals at St. John the Divine Cathederal in NYC. A really lovely gathering of humans and their owners. They hold art shows, music programs, a concert to celebrate the Summer Solstice that is held at sunrise, beautiful artwork, and lots of nooks and crannies to commune with whatever higher power you need to. I’m Pagan and I love to go to the Cathederal just to recharge my batteries. It’s a very positive place. And they still have an apprentice program to teach stone cutting.

If "no religion/atheist" were listed in order on a list of prevailing beliefs in America, it would come in second behind Protestants and ahead of all other religions. I lose respect for people when they proclaim a belief in a god. I know they didn't even bother to think through what they were brainwashed with when they were children or are so emotionally unable to cope with reality that they have to cling to make-believe as solace.

Buddhists believe that life is suffering. That’s about as real as you can get. I feel sorry for you, r366. You are no different from the judgemental, self-righteous zealots who judge others because they do not believe as they do. Just like them you think that your way is the only way. My “religion” gives me joy. And I take full responsibility for my actions and the consequences. My only problem with Christians is that so few of them know anything that is steeped in truth about the man they are venerating. And even less of them practice the philosophy by which he lived his life. All religion boils down to one tenet. Treat others as you yourself would like to be treated. Works for me.

I’m a Pagan, r369. I work with many Gods and Goddesses in my practice as a witch. Notice I said WORK with. And let me tell you, I have seen and heard things that can’t be explained. A small figure, the element of fire, dancing in the flame of a candle. Someone I was with saw it too. The disembodied voice of a friend who passed away who came to say goodbye. I lived in an apartment with a ghost. I’ve had many precognitive dreams. The smell of a cigar in my apartment when I was alone and I don’t smoke. Or the scent of perfume when I am not wearing any. These indicate the presence of an Orisha. All I’m saying is if people take comfort in believing in a higher power and they are living up to the tenets of their faith then I have no problem with it.

Wow I just read that Pete's dad died not even two months ago. He and his mom were longtime professors at Notre Dame in South Bend. Sad!
I wonder why he came back to IN to begin a political career. That state is not known to support Dems, esp not left-leaning or openly gay ones. He would have had a better foothold if he'd stayed in MA after Harvard or perhaps moved to Chicago (an hour away) or someplace else. I don't believe he'll ever be able to win a state wide office in IN, unfortunately. Hopefully this won't hurt his future political prospects because obvs he's terrific.

Is it me or did Hayes seem somewhat hostile? Reminded us that Pete lost the race for state treasurer. That SB is smaller than the Bronx. And that he didn’t believe that Pete spoke eight languages. But Pete had the last word when he told him that he doesn’t pretend to be a linguistgenius and that it would be a good thing to have a president who is curious about the world and other cultures since we will have a lot of fence mending to do after Trump. That shut his gob, by golly. Bravo, Pete!

R397, I thought the same thing about Hayes being hostile in that interview. But one of the things I love about Pete is that he is never put on the back foot by hostile interviewing. He never (or at least not that I've seen, and I've watched quite a few interviews now) comes across as embarrassed or awkward or struggling for an answer. He just comes up with a great response and sails onwards. But at the same time, he doesn't do that by giving evasive answers, or seeming to be rehearsed. It's really impressive. In that Hayes piece, I got the impression right at the end that CH knew he'd been a bit of a dick, but was impressed that he hadn't been able to prevail.

I’ve read that Hayes is all in for Bernie. It wouldn’t surprise me if he also favored Gilibrand. Pete didn’t look all that comfortable or happy when the interview started. I wonder if there was some awkwardness between him and Hayes before the interview. Pete isn’t anti-Bernie. He won an essay contest lauding his courage and authenticity by being true to himself and running as a Democratic Socialist. I agree with r399. Nothing seems to knock him back on his heels because he answers honestly and gives thoughtful answers. In other words, he talks them to death. None of them seem prepared for that. That amuses me.

r447 yes a lot of focus on the white males but are you going to complain if the final candidate is one of them? Vote for what they are used to and what makes them 'comfortable' esp in difficult times. Well guess what that is unfortunately.
I want more than anything to see the current loser POTUS thrown OUT of the WH. OUT. I will see that via any means available, and if a white male Dem frontrunner is it, then so it will be.

Please stop trying to create a false narrative that Pete is alienating to women. It is simply not true. The “Feminists” are not out to get him. I have seen exactly two Twitter accounts that were critical of him and one was that McElrath cunt who misread something he said and had to backtrack and apologize and delete her mean tweet. The other one is named Krott. She’s the worst of the two. I think she’s for Beto. Warren and Klobuchar are falling back because of their own self created messes. Kamala is busy throwing shade at Biden. Tracey Abrams is having none of the talk about playing second fiddle to an old white man. And I don’t vote for anyone based on what a celebrity thinks. Pete may not make it to the finish but he’s going to be a major player in the Democratic party the same way Abrahms will be.

R450, the problem is that those white males might not be the best. They might just be getting the best press. Perception beats reality every time. The media is picking the Dem candidate. They should be giving equal, fair coverage to all the viable candidates (viable being the ones who've met the threshold to take part in the debates). They aren't. They've chosen their favorites and now they're going to make them everyone's favorites. The bias toward the white males isn't inherent to the race, it's inherent to the media.

I think that Pete is getting a lot of press because he has a good story. Relatively unknown, young gay mayor with a funny name, a funny husband, who served in the military and speaks 7 languages. He holds a very impressive town hall, which gains him attention, which gets him spots on morning shows, people are impressed, he gets more invitations, and the buzz begins to spread.
I knew very little about Pete until the town hall, but I was incredibly impressed by it, and have been keeping an eye on him since. The more I see him the more impressed I am. It seems like I am not the only one who feels that way. The growth of awareness and the buzz around him feels very organic, and not at all like the media has decided to pick him over any of the other candidates. He's having a moment, and he is using that moment well. It won't last forever, but it may help him get closer to the White House than anyone thought possible, it happened with Obama, so who can say?
Honestly, Pete feels like a breath of fresh air in politics, he is intelligent, thoughtful, he seems honest, and so far there don't seem to be any looming scandals.
I don't know if he will get the nomination, but I would love it if he did. He seems to have the ability to appeal to a wide spectrum of people from left to right, and he is absolutely the opposite of Trump in terms of intelligence and demeanor. The deplorables won't vote for him, but they are firmly in the grasp of their God-Emperor, so working about them is a losing battle.
I will vote for whatever Dem gets the nomination, but I will be really happy if it's Pete.

Do you really think that America is going to elect a gay man as president? This America?
by Anonymous | reply 454 | March 30, 2019 1:28 AM

Maybe, maybe not R454. They elected (not really) a reality show host and long-time grifter. Pete is a non-threatening gay, and I don't mean that in a bad way, he comes across as very grounded, he isn't camp, and so far at least he is demonstrating appeal to a lot of demographics, not just the coasts and the liberals. It helps that he was in the military, talks about his religious faith, and is married. He is matter of fact about his sexuality. He doesn't hide it, but he doesn't make a huge deal about it either. Most of the references that he makes to being gay are related to the Supreme Court decision that has allowed him the freedom to marry.
Maybe this America won't elect him, maybe they will surprise us and they will. There were a lot of people that thought that Barack Hussein Obama couldn't get elected because of his name, his experience, and because he was black, but those people were wrong. People also thought that a person who has demonstrated in ample ways that he is a vile piece of shit, and has displayed that since the '80s, with no political experience could get elected. Those people were also wrong. I was one of them.
At this point we are coming up on 2.5 years of depressing Trumpian shit. Years of outrage, years of WTF? It keeps continuing with his behavior since Barr's announcement about the Mueller report. Right now, Pete gives me hope. If he doesn't get the nomination at least he is building his name, building awareness, and creating opportunities so that maybe in 2024 (which would be the worst) or 2028 he will be a viable candidate. I think he has a bright political future ahead of him, and I am glad of it, because he, and people like him are what we need in this country. I say that as a gay man who thinks that Pete's sexuality is one of the least interesting things about him.

R465, I don't see that statement as TRASHING HRC as much as disagreeing with her point of view re her statement of perceived complacency. Just because citizens vote for a candidate doesn't mean that they agree with everything that person says. Many Americans are not and will in fact never be satisfied with the status quo. Improvements can always be made.

Hillary fans will be the Bernie Bros of this election. They build her up into some kind of God that no one is able to criticize for any reason whatsoever and anyone who does they will try to tear down. I say this is someone who voted for her in both the primaries and the general election. Someone who hosted a Hillary viewing party the night of the election. Someone who volunteered for her campaign. And who donated a good bit of money to her campaign. But 2016 was 2016 and we need to move forward

Plenty were mad at Bernie for constantly excusing Trump voters, and I recall people being mad at Biden and Franken and Obama when they all blamed the 2016 loss on Hillary and not the crazy fucking bigots who voted for Trump. For over two years a lot of Dems have been angry because they want the DNC to acknowledge that there's a huge racism problem, that the GOP cheated, that the media has failed us, and instead these guys want to give us soundbites about how it was all Hillary's fault.
Failing that, people want current candidates to stop using the 2016 loss as an excuse to bash a prominent Democratic Party member in a bid to suck up to Midwesterners in states that probably won't go blue anyway.
It's concerning that Buttigieg didn't realize that jumping on the Hillary-bashing train wouldn't go over well.
Some of the same people on this thread saying Buttigieg criticizing a fellow Dem is just fine, are off on other threads telling people to stop criticizing Biden because "the party should stick together." Why doesn't that go for Buttigieg?

The president and the Republican Party chant "lock her up" every time that Hillary Clinton's name is mentioned. They've convinced a good portion of Americans that she literally had people killed. They have convinced them that she is running a corrupt operation and that she's involved with a child sex ring masquerading as a pizza shop. And we are upset because someone who endorsed her and voted for her has a very slight criticism about one of her tactical decisions in the last election? I'm pretty sure she's a big girl and can handle it.

Straight men and MARRIED straight women, R534. Funny how so many around here never seem to remember to blame the almost 70% of white men who are Repugs. If men weren't allowed to vote, no Repug would ever be elected anywhere in the nation. Stop attacking only women all the time.
Meanwhile, Chicago's new mayor is a black lesbian. Think that means anything for Buttigieg's chances or is it just a liberal city that isn't a bellwether for anything national? I honestly don't think there is any way in the world that America elects a gay guy. He can talk about being gay all he wants but the first time he kisses his husband on camera, it's over.

"When Northeastern initially planned Buttigieg’s visit to Boston nine weeks ago, organizers set aside a room that fits around 200 people. As interest in the candidate’s talk grew, the school moved the event to an auditorium that could accommodate 500 people and eliminated the need for tickets. The expanded event still drew an overflow crowd. More than an hour before Buttigieg took the stage, hundreds of people stood in a line that stretched around the building."

R544...really use? They are essential, bottom line, which is why he's pandering to them.
Pete is no idiot. So long as southern hicks and midwestern rednecks hold a massively disproportionate amount of power to elect our President thanks to the electoral college, we are stuck having to cater to them.
I do believe he cares about the midwest, but I don't think he really believes the Dems are equally to blame for the hardship in their lives, the way he makes it seem in his interviews--that we somehow forget about them, when in reality our leaders were the only ones who tried to give them healthcare, improve the middle class, etc. He knows the Republicans/Corporations exploited the bigotry and ignorance of these bumpkins to get them to vote against their own interests for the past 30-40 years...while coastal cities thrived under liberal state governance.
But he's not going to win them over by saying this. You have to play the game. So long as they hold the power in the way the current system is drawn up, you have to undo the brainwashing slowly, with a spoonful of sugar.
I just hope that if he wins, or if any Democrat wins the White House, that they immediately begin the process to abolish the electoral college so we're not held hostage from moving forward as a country for the next 30-40 years by a few states who are grossly overrepresented in our political system in comparison to the nation as a whole.

"And while we’re on the topic, can I remind everyone that Pete Buttigieg didn’t just pop up out of nowhere? He’s been getting loads of press as an up-and-comer for at least the past five years (for example: “The most interesting mayor you’ve never heard of” in the Washington Post in 2014, “The first gay president?” in the New York Times in 2016). In 2017 he ran for DNC chair. He’s been talked about as a presidential candidate and representative of Millennials ever since.
In other words, it’s not a huge surprise that he’s gotten good press and raised a fair sum of money. He’s been courting the media for a long time, and he’s hardly an unknown in Democratic circles."

There's always a first time. Remember the old times when a presidential candidate couldn't come from New York, or when a catholic candidate was unthinkable, or a person of color was presumed unelectable? I am sure gays in Ireland and Luxembourg were considered unelectable, too - until they were elected.
I agree though that at this point in time putting a gay man on the ticket is a risk. But it may not be too risky anymore. The last twenty years really have shifted peoples perception of what a president should be or do.

R586, Chicago is a giant, liberal city. A Repug didn't even bother running. It is not indicative of the Midwest. Pete lost big when he tried to run state-wide in Indiana. What are you all not getting?

This whole idea that Pete is similar to Obama will turn off black voters. We don't like when gays try to compare a black man to a gay man struggle. It is not the same in the sense that obama had to overcome his racial identity as a black man something he couldn't hide.
