College Admissions Scam, Operation Varsity Blues: Part Six

For when Part Five is full, or your phone has bogged out because the thread got too long.

Let us open Part Six with a call to prayer that at least Lori's trial will be televised. Starting with this one from R544 Part Five:

Heavenly Father, we lift up @LoriLoughlin to you! We pray that Lori is able to open her heart at her trial. Televise the trial and fill her with the Holy Spirit! Lord we are all sinners. Forgive us for our schadenfreude. We can all make mistakes or poor choices. Please guide her in her time of need as we know her career is in the toilet anyway. In J.C. #Hearties #PrayersForLoriLoughlin #WhenCallsTheFBI

"Troubled Hollywood stars Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy looked frail and haggard as they showed up for an unscheduled trip to a Los Angeles courthouse Friday.

The married actors wore frumpy jeans and sweaters — and Macy looked gaunt and almost sickly — as they arrived in connection with Huffman’s charges in a multimillion-dollar college admissions fixing scheme, according to TMZ.

“Desperate Housewives” star Huffman is charged with paying $15,000 in hopes of upping her daughter’s SAT score.

She had no court appearance scheduled in LA Friday but may have been there for additional paperwork for the $250,000 bail she posted Tuesday.

The two certainly weren’t dressed for standing in front of a judge.

The typically glamorous Huffman slummed it in canvas loafers, jeans and a loose black pullover. She completed her simultaneously “desperate” and “housewifey” look with glasses and a messy chignon.

“Shameless” star Macy channeled a vagrant in sneakers, rumpled jeans and a cardigan.

Huffman’s next court date is March 29 in Boston, where the federal conspiracy and bribery case is based.

And he brought up the fact this could go on for years R24. They should cut a deal fast so it is not going to play in the news forever. Considering there age I don't see them getting much work, especially because there are other actresses that can do the rolls they would have been offered and don't have the baggage.

by Anonymousreply 27March 15, 2019 11:15 PM

William H looks 75. Felicity’s new face dropped a few inches.

by Anonymousreply 31March 15, 2019 11:19 PM

Are you always a fucking ass R30?

by Anonymousreply 32March 15, 2019 11:21 PM

Laughlin's daughter just lost her gig as YouTube spokesbimbo for Sephora Cosmetics. Didn't Lori realize her daughter already had an important career, and really didn't need to go to college after all? Not knowing how to properly apply eyeliner is like practically a world crisis!

by Anonymousreply 33March 15, 2019 11:24 PM

The problem with that type of gig R33 is it can't last forever. Eventually someone younger and better looking is going to come along and bump her out of the spot.

by Anonymousreply 34March 15, 2019 11:30 PM

Those pics of Felicity and William holding hands and looking like the homeless is definitely crisis management.

by Anonymousreply 35March 15, 2019 11:32 PM

So Lori did all this just so she could have bragging rights to her friends about her girls at a "good school". But her friends have presumably met OJ and HerSidekick and know that they're as dumb as a box of rocks. So they would immediately know that Lori pulled some strings or wrote a check.

WHAT'S THE POINT, LORI??

by Anonymousreply 36March 15, 2019 11:38 PM

Rick Caruso,SC Board of Trustees President and owner of the party yacht which OJ and the girls were vacationing on has a very interesting daughter, GG Caruso, who is a big time influencer and friend of OJ. GG is a much more impressive and professional influencer than OJ. I had no idea there was a whole new breed of college students, who are probably attending school for entirely different reasons than traditional students. If bored, check her out. I'm thinking GG and OJ were likely more than just friends - they were both successful before starting school and likely knew each other well. Small world, right? My question is, how was Rick Caruso involved? This does not look like a coincidence to me.

by Anonymousreply 37March 15, 2019 11:40 PM

R37 Gigi is not more impressive. She has 32k followers, which is pitiful. It's all a numbers game

by Anonymousreply 38March 15, 2019 11:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 51March 16, 2019 12:43 AM

Now that the dust has settled a little bit I can see things a little bit more clearly. Felicity will probably get probation since no one was hurt in her case. Lori and her hubby have more problems and I think the husband will do time and Lori will get probation. The wild card is the IRS in these cases. Maybe I missed it, but was there any mention of falsified tax returns? Career wise, who the hell knows. I didn't think Mel Gibson could come back, but he did. Martha Stewart came back, but I don't know if she is as popular as she was before. A lot of people thought it was overkill on her charges and sentencing.

Follow up on the NYU comments

I was a student at tisch in the mid 90’s..The main competition with Tisch is USC and Yale Drama. Despite previous comments Tisch is VERY selective. NYU undergrad (CAS especially) is not. Stern is.

Grad school at NYU is selective

I do believe, as a alumni that if anything Tisch would be a hotbed for this scandalous behavior.

The Athletic Department (we are called the NYU Violets ...of all things) most certainly would not

I read an interview with the sketch artist R65. She said she drew them as she saw them. Lori came off arrogant and that is what the sketch showed. Felicity looked more "genuine." The sketch artist was sitting next to William H. Macy. He asked to see the sketch and said it was nice or something like that. They had a cordial conversation between one another. She said she wished they had met under different circumstances.

Some woman is suing Felicity and Lori for $500 billion dollars for displacing her son from a University slot. I wonder if more people will get the idea and start suing not only universities but also some of the parents.

Desperate lawsuits.

by Anonymousreply 98March 16, 2019 3:11 AM

The Tiger Mom suing for 500 billion is going to fuck up some legit lawsuits in my opinion. I guess go big or go home, (go home) but that is just going to make people/potential jurors/etc. roll their eyes, and fuck it up for everyone else.

by Anonymousreply 99March 16, 2019 3:13 AM

"NYU undergrad (CAS especially) is not."

Maybe in your day it wasn't but these days the acceptance rate is low

by Anonymousreply 103March 16, 2019 3:25 AM

R103, Back in “my day” (mid 90’s) CAS was always looked at as the easiest school within NYU to get into. The more competitive undergrad schools within the university were always Tisch, Stern and Gallatin. Back in “my day” NYU was also consistently ranked in the top 25 national universities nationwide - now, it’s lost that -

Yes... this year it happens to be ranked 30, Which is an improvement from the past few years, but it’s still lost that top 25 prestige it use to have in “my day”

Maybe it’s a result of all those rich kids parents purchasing their admissions...

We’ll see as more of this scandal unfolds

by Anonymousreply 104March 16, 2019 3:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 110March 16, 2019 3:57 AM

I think the prestige of the school was a huge factor in their decision to cheat, but also the contacts their kids make with other rich kids. For instance, Miss OJ yachting with a billionaires kid on his yacht - that’s also why they go to such lengths to get in.

Here’s a question... besides the film school (maybe I’m biased as I’m also the NYU poster/alumni) how great is USC? Sure, their film school is highly regarded - but what else do they have that is considered somewhat top tier? Business?

For anyone wanting to attend a top school in California I would think Stanford, Berkeley or even UCLA would be considered much better.

I would rather spend 500k to get into Stanford or Berkeley..

I understand the Yale bribery - USC seems like a waste of a half million..

Social Media Cunting, and Yacht Whoring.

by Anonymousreply 119March 16, 2019 4:37 AM

oh please, USC is a party school, it is not good for Biz major.

Gallatin is easy to get into. It's basically study at your own pace. Christy Turlington went there, Dakota Fanning is there now.

I agree that NYU's CAS is easy get into. And they charge the same amount as Harvard. total rip off. I know so many people who are not doing much, one of them driving uber/lyft, another doing mid level hospitality jobs. It was not worth it for them. Seriously save your money for grad school, it's more important to go to a good grad school.

I’m still back on thread 5, catching up, but wanted to post that I was at a funeral in the middle of the Midwest and this story came up as conversation at the lunch table and the ladies with kids in school were on fire. Enraged. No sympathy, and scrolling twitter I don’t see much (maybe 5%) support for LL/FH and the other scammers.

by Anonymousreply 125March 16, 2019 5:47 AM

Obviously Stanford and Berkeley are better, they are top-tier and regarded as highly as Ivy schools. UCLA is closing in on that rep tho, particularly in the medical and film departments. USC is slightly below, but considered an easier school with more parties and richer kids. All four have enormous pots of money to spend on sports, research labs, and excellent teachers.

Mossimo's fillers and nose job are BAAAAAD. The nose is that late 80s Park Ave Jewess favorite and is entirely feminizing. Did he pick it out of an old catalogue? The OJ daughter does seem like a dumb materialistic whore. Regardless of where they tried to send her, it does seem ANY college for her would be a huge waste of time. Why did they bother?

I imagine Felicity is a bit miffed that she's in this mess with 15,000 while Lori spent half a million. Makes her look cheap. On the other hand Felicity's children are smart Saints compared to Lori's daughter Olivia Jade so of course Lori had to spend more on that fuck-up.

by Anonymousreply 140March 16, 2019 8:12 AM

They are criminals. They taught their children how to bribe, lie to the FBI, create fake charities and defraud the IRS. Worst still, the Universities are also involved with creating a new generation of sociopaths, especially the administrators, senior staff and the Board of Trustees.

Also, the charter private schools are lying too. They are producing idiots and criminals. Public Schools are better.

by Anonymousreply 141March 16, 2019 8:14 AM

Meanwhile, the kids who go to public school and go to college based on their desire to learn are saddled with Student Loan Debt.

The system is rigged against us.

by Anonymousreply 142March 16, 2019 8:18 AM

It's tragic that people commit crimes for the scam that is the US education system. I am starting to think that people who homeschool their children aren't just crazy loons, but fed up how the elite and the government fucked education up to create easy prey for snake oil salesmen, pawns and cannon fodder.

R144, Do NOT conflate legit with crime, as too many TV Talking Heads are doing.

Legacy admissions are because alumni loyalty is important to colleges and universities. Often they become donors, sports season pass holders, visitors, and recruiters themselves, through generations.

Even if the parent isn't an alumnus/a, any parent donating a building, say, or a library wing, or to the University's General Fund, is going to have their applicant child more than seriously considered for admission.

Note that in the above examples, the end results benefit not just the family but also the college and student body. Moreover, I would wager that the would-be Freshmen in the majority of these cases meet the Admission requirements (at least enough to begin in General Studies).

Bribery of coaches using fake (even Photoshopped!) athletic credentials; SAT cheating (paying off proctors; altering answers and scores; falsely claiming the need for special test-taking arrangements); bribery of Admissions Directors: All underhanded and felonious. All to the benefit of law-breakers.

Because the parents wanted a "sure thing." Simply donating to a college fund in an above-board public manner couldn't secure that guarantee. Only criminal behavior could.

by Anonymousreply 152March 16, 2019 10:04 AM

[quote]It's not egalitarian, and that isn't okay in 2019.

Someone is going to lose out on admission. It’s life, not everyone can be accepted. The colleges have their methods for which students they accept. Is it fair? Maybe, maybe not, but that’s life.

To be sure, what these parents are accused of doing is not what I’m talking about, this is different.

by Anonymousreply 159March 16, 2019 12:18 PM

A pity all this energy couldn't have been directed to reading to their kids, encouraging them to go to the library, discussing the news at the dinner table, reviewing their kids' homework, taking them to museums and plays, and doing all the other things parents do to stimulate intellectual curiosity. It's no coincidence that the Macy girls are models and the Gianulli girls are influencers. If you spend all your time emphasizing how your kids look and neglect their intellectual development, this is what you get. On the other hand, your male children will probably be very popular on DL

Expect at least the Macy-Huffmans to stop dying their hair, look progressively haggard, wear reduced or no makeup, complain of health complications, and maybe eventually show up to court in a wheelchair.

(ABC7) Lynn Swann, hired by the USC Trojans three years ago to run an athletic department all too familiar with scandal, says he won't resign in the face of more of it.

Swann, speaking to the Los Angeles Times about the college admissions bribery case in which a senior associate athletic director, water polo coach and former soccer coach were indicted and later fired by the school, said they were veteran athletics officials who "had seen bad things done and knew better."

"I think everybody was blindsided by this," Swann said in the interview with the Times. "The fact that it was a senior member of the staff and also our men's and women's head water polo coach. ... These are people that have been here a long time and people who had been here during difficult times and had seen bad things done and knew better. Everyone was completely shocked, caught off guard and taken by surprise."

Swann, 67, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Trojans receiver, was hired by USC in April 2016 to succeed retiring athletic director Pat Haden.

Swann said that in the future, one person will not have as much responsibility as senior administrators such as the fired Donna Heinel had.

"We will work with the university to implement the best system," Swann said. "We will work with the administration, admissions, sports administrators, recruiters and scouts so there are more eyeballs on this. Moving forward when a list of names is being put forward, the coach sees it, the recruiter sees it, the administrator sees it and others see it so we know these are real student-athletes that we're trying to get.

"Whether they're a preferred walk-on in football or someone else, we need to know these are real student-athletes. One of the first things I did after I read through the affidavit was I called Katharine Harrington, the vice president of admissions and planning at USC, and I apologized to her. The admissions department had no clue this was happening. They had no idea, and why would they?"

Swann was among more than 200 candidates considered for the position before his hire. He had no experience in high-level collegiate athletic administration but was the third consecutive former USC football player to take the post.

[quote]For anyone wanting to attend a top school in California I would think Stanford, Berkeley or even UCLA would be considered much better.

USC is like the Ivies in that a lot of kids of the wealthy go there. It is a great networking school. Academically, it’s certainly inferior to Berkeley, UCLA, UCSB, UCSF and UCSD. That is why USC outranks UCLA on the US News and World Report domestic college rankings, which includes lots of soft “quality of life” and amenities criteria. USC ranks low, surprisingly so, and far below public universities like UCLA, Michigan and Berkeley on global university rankings like QS and ARWU, and (funnily) USNWR’s own global university rankings. These look at factors like quality of faculty, research citations, grants, etc.

by Anonymousreply 183March 16, 2019 3:01 PM

Does the mother sue the university, the trickster who ran the scam, or just Laughlin and Huffman? I'd think the universities would prefer to settle as quick as possible out of court. by Anonymousreply 201March 16, 2019 3:43 PM

But the mother does have a case in the sense that the universities failed, or refused, to check (aka turned a blind eye) if the applications of the accepted students were correct and truthful (like in cases where students were accepted based on sport scolarship requirements). Good faith doesn't apply when you can prove at least one case where universities refused to act, because the student in question was the kid of a high profile donor.

The thing is Olivia Jade didn't want to college therefore made it extra hard to be accepted anywhere. That's when her parents, who couldn't accept their daugher's decision, became desperate.

I am wondering if Olivia would have made a bigger effort if she had gotten those 500 grand from her parents?

The University of California, Berkeley has joined the growing list of universities tied to the sweeping college admissions scandal — as a former Canadian football player allegedly paid someone to take the SATs for his sons, one of whom was on the school’s rowing team.

David Sidoo, who played for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and later the Canadian Football League, was busted March 8 on charges related to the scam, ABC affiliate KGO-TV reported.

Sidoo allegedly paid someone $200,000 to take the SAT for his sons in 2011 and 2012, according to court documents obtained by the station.

While Sidoo’s older son enrolled at Chapman University in Orange County, his younger son, Jordan, attended UC Berkeley, according to the report.

Jordan Sidoo is listed on the roster for the 2015 rowing team at the school. His Linkedin page indicates that he graduated from the university last year, studied history and was on the varsity rowing team from 2014 to 2016.

He is currently pursuing his MBA at Southern New Hampshire University, which offers online degrees, according to the page.

Sidoo is among 33 parents who have been charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud in the massive scam that has impacted admissions at Stanford, Yale, Georgetown, Wake Forest and the University of Texas.

In a statement issued to the station, University of California president Janet Napolitano said she was “deeply troubled and disappointed” to learn that the widespread scam had reached his university.

“The allegations associated with UC, if proven true, are a disservice to the hardworking and accomplished students and alumni who have earned their place at the university and continue to make us proud,” Napolitano said.

“Illegal, inappropriate and unethical means to gain admission, at the expense of deserving applicants, is antithetical to every aspect of our mission and values,” she added. “As a public institution — one of the most highly regarded in the world — we are dedicated to ensuring a level playing field for every applicant.” –– ADVERTISEMENT ––

Napolitano said the school would “take swift and appropriate disciplinary actions to address misconduct once we have all the facts.”

I’ve taken online courses and I was able to download the video lectures, download the pdf notes and the assignments involved coding apps and writing essays then submitting them via a portal. I could have let someone else do my assignments if I wanted to. I know some athletes who paid other kids to go to their lectures in brick and mortar college and take notes and do the assignments. Easy to do when the class is 300 kids in an auditorium. I would put nothing past those guys if they let someone else go their SATs.

Can I point out the wonderfully acid way the Daily Mail described them?

The typically glamorous Huffman slummed it in canvas loafers, jeans and a loose black pullover. She completed her simultaneously “desperate” and “housewifey” look with glasses and a messy chignon.

“Shameless” star Macy channeled a vagrant in sneakers, rumpled jeans and a cardigan.

Messy chignon! Channeling a vagrant! I love that.

How come Huffman and Macy looked like that coming to court? An article said that Loughlin knew about the warrant and turned herself in (and therefore was prepared to show up in court). However, Huffman also walked into court a free woman (out on bail I suppose), she did not get brought up to court in custody. Was she pressed for time?

Huffman actually looks better to me with less makeup and glasses than how she looks on the red carpet.

by Anonymousreply 277March 16, 2019 11:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 278March 16, 2019 11:47 PM

I can't imagine they didn't know something was coming. When you become a target of the FBI they tell you that. Now they didn't know if/when they'd be arrested but they had to know they were being investigated.

Huffman at the minimum knew an arrest was imminent and was actually supposed to turn herself in. For some reason we don’t know yet, the FBI decided to “go get her” instead, complete with an early morning, guns drawn raid on her house.

by Anonymousreply 286March 16, 2019 11:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 287March 17, 2019 12:01 AM

Actually, I think it's less pretentious to live in NY or TX than in L.A. There's more paparazzi, etc., in LA, so that's where all the people who want fame (in addition to an acting career) are based. Yes, I realize LA also has nice weather and is a nice place to live.

On a side note grade inflation must be such a real thing. USC says the average GPA for admitted freshman is 3.73. Way back in my day there that was the grade average of the valedictorian at my high school. All the other students who went to prominent colleges were in the B plus range.

R279 As R286 clearly noted, this has already been discussed. Felicity did indeed know something was coming. Why Felicity got the early bird rousting treatment, as did Mr.Lori, I don't know, nor does TMZs sources. I have said this earlier, but maybe Felicity waited too long to turn herself in? No clue. Interesting though how Ms. Lori was able to creep in and out with nothing more than her cunty police sketch. While Felicity and Mr. Lori got papped, both looked like death barely warmed over.

by Anonymousreply 305March 17, 2019 6:51 AM

They knew and hired an expensive PR firm to deal with it. HAHA, it is not working. The American people are fucking pissed.

by Anonymousreply 306March 17, 2019 7:12 AM

The PR problem is that this hits a lot of people, who happen to be parents in the gut, with them struggling to get their, they perceive, talented offspring into a decent college. The entitlement (though if some parents are honest they'd do the same for their kids to guarantee them "a better life" that is associated with a better college education) the ungrateful Olivia Jade, the hypocrisy of Lori Laughlin and her Christan values, etc.

It's like with Chris Christie's Bridgegate where the general public can relate to the anger and frustration of being trapped in a traffic jam and being someone's unwilling pawn in some political scheme in such a way.

I think Huffman and Macy could get out of this by saying that they were stupid parents who wanted their kids to succeed and prosper without knowing that their parents had a hand in it. And at least their daughter seems to be a decent human being.

Laughling fucked up big. The husband made it worse. The daughter (was a piece of work she is!) made it even worse.

by Anonymousreply 307March 17, 2019 7:38 AM

by Anonymousreply 317March 17, 2019 11:52 AM

Obviously, and so are all the lectures who were fixing her grades. no way this girl could do college level work.

by Anonymousreply 318March 17, 2019 11:54 AM

The yacht is owned by a board member, not the school president.

by Anonymousreply 319March 17, 2019 12:33 PM

That girl didn't want to go to school. She was like a kid who went limb and made it extra hard for her parents to drag her to school. Her parents basically had to throw money at everyone at school to make it look like she did the bare minimum. The parents are at fault for not realizing that this ungrateful cunt didn't deserve any help and support from them since this very mess they are in is the reward (aka karma) for all of their efforts.

by Anonymousreply 320March 17, 2019 12:46 PM

R309 It has been posted many times, they are still in high school. Only one daughter had her score changed and they decided not to go through with it for their second daughter.

by Anonymousreply 321March 17, 2019 1:48 PM

Billionaire real estate developer Rick Caruso, owner of party yacht, is the President of the Board of Trustees at USC. His daughter, GG, is also an influencer and already CEO of her own business, GG's bikinis. The connection between the Carusos and OJ is far from coincidental. Would love to hear some dirt on him.

by Anonymousreply 322March 17, 2019 2:19 PM

Good question, R309. The oldest daughter, Sofia, was in at midst of applying to colleges, using the fake SAT scores. It was never reported which colleges she may have been accepted to (it would have to be an early acceptance if she got any). I can't imagine any colleges would offer her an acceptance now, unless maybe she agreed to take the test over.

by Anonymousreply 323March 17, 2019 2:27 PM

Students who take honors or AP courses get their grades bumped up a letter grade, so now GPAs are calculated on a 5 scale. For example, a student who earns a "B" (3) in an AP course gets that figured into their GPA as an "A" (4). So-called high-achieving students today can graduate with GPAs nearing 5.0. You can get straight Bs in AP courses and your GPA looks like a 4.0.

Forgive me if everyone here knows this. I started teaching high school after a long academic career, and I didn't know this. I don't really understand how or why this happened. It's a whole new world of grade inflation out there.

by Anonymousreply 324March 17, 2019 2:38 PM

R324... because they want to encourage kids to challenge themselves and take harder courses.

Why should a college-bound student, whose acceptance depends on GPA, take an AP course and risk getting a B, when they could take an easier course and ace it?

The students who challenged themselves and took more difficult coursework are better prepared for college, so their GPAs are adjusted to allow them an equal chance at acceptance than someone who took easy courses and gets a perfect GPA.

by Anonymousreply 325March 17, 2019 3:15 PM

AP is also a money making scheme for the "non-profit" ETS. And students who take AP aren't even required to take the test. Many take it because it looks good on their transcripts.

by Anonymousreply 326March 17, 2019 3:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 328March 17, 2019 3:59 PM

This question is concerning the lawsuit, so hopefully someone here can answer it. $500 billion lawsuit, which most of us can agree is excessive. This scam involved around 700 to 750 kids over a 25 years period. On average that is 30 students a year, spread out over all those schools. Wouldn't the parent to have to prove their student didn't get in because of the scam? As we have seen there are many kids that didn't get into their school of choice, even with high scores. Maybe this scam will make it more transparent when certain student are selected while others are denied. They would also have to prove their child suffered for not being accepted. If they were accepted into another school and went on to a successful career, are the parents going to claim their career would have been better if they were accepted to their school of choice? Got to say, if this lawsuit winds through the courts it will be very interesting.

by Anonymousreply 329March 17, 2019 6:20 PM

500 billion really caught everyone's attention. Also, Kay Toy is a teacher, so she probably knows more about this sort of thing than most.

by Anonymousreply 330March 17, 2019 6:49 PM

Deadspin has an article about the Yale women's soccer coach who helped pass students off as "athletic recruits" - he is a huge piece of shit who would make students write his papers for him when he was getting his degree in recreation and sports science and coaching education in 2018.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 331March 17, 2019 7:12 PM

I think the 500 billion is excessive, but it's on purpose to bring attention to said lawsuit, and to express how far reaching and damaging this has been to literally tens of thousands, if not a million plus students, and their parents in the past decade. Think it out. The ripple effect of this sham has derailed the college dreams of at least, hundreds of thousands of students. Imagine having all your college dreams set on a select few schools that offered programs that would nurture a future career. But being blocked in attending because some undeserving, dumb as shit, rich kid and their parents, bought their way into your hopeful slot.

We have not heard the last of this, and all parents indicted in this, will have their reputations tainted forever!

by Anonymousreply 332March 17, 2019 7:16 PM

"Imagine having all your college dreams set on a select few schools that offered programs that would nurture a future career. But being blocked in attending because some undeserving, dumb as shit, rich kid and their parents, bought their way into your hopeful slot."

The cheaters are assholes......but I don't understand people who "have to" go to one college, there are hundreds of colleges in America, find another option. And getting into elite colleges has become harder and harder over the years, competing with cheaters like this might be part of it but that's not the only reason why. The number of kids implicated in this is relatively small - 700 people is a drop in the bucket when you consider the millions of Americans who go to college

by Anonymousreply 333March 17, 2019 7:22 PM

Reading these articles I’m amazed at the subjects you can get a degree in in the USA. Unless you have connections most of these degrees must be useless. On the other hand you can’t conpete without one so it’s a catch 22. I don’t blame people for being furious over this.

"The cheaters are assholes......but I don't understand people who "have to" go to one college, there are hundreds of colleges in America, find another option."

Because R333, there are some disciplines that are stellar at certain schools more than they are at other colleges. Ask this question to the rich assholes who insisted on getting their kid into that elite school when there were hundreds of other options. Stop blaming Nancy from Idaho why she couldn't just select a local university instead of her dream to go to Stanford for their bio-medical sciences. Since this news broke, people have been sharing their stories of applying to 5 or more of the top colleges and getting declined by all of them. You have to have certain GPA and scores on the ACT/SAT to even think of applying for these schools, so to have the belief that you'll get accepted by at least one of these top schools, but still fall short... this breaking news helps explain why they didn't get in. This isn't about other options, these applicants applied to multiple colleges, but as we all know now, they were cocked blocked by the rich for their top college choice.

by Anonymousreply 336March 17, 2019 7:33 PM

"..... this breaking news helps explain why they didn't get in"

Um, no. It doesn't. You really think this is the ONLY reason why those kids didn't get into their first choice colleges?

"Stop blaming Nancy from Idaho why she couldn't just select a local university instead of her dream to go to Stanford for their bio-medical sciences."

Most of the people who didn't get in are rich too, not "Nancy from Idaho" - poor kids don't usually apply to these kinds of schools. Many poor kids don't go to college at all, or they stay home and go to a public school instead of flying thousands of miles from their home to go to Rich Kid U

by Anonymousreply 337March 17, 2019 7:37 PM

r325, I know that's the thinking but the reality is that the kids are not all that capable. As a college professor I had kids tell me every year that they had taken AP courses in high school and therefore deserved As for their work. In truth, there was no discernible difference between their work and that of "regular" students at the college level.

Like r326 said, the College Board is kind of a scam. Now that I teach AP students, maybe 1/3 of them are strong students. The majority are socialized to think that way, and the curriculum is watered down to help them maintain the illusion.

R327, as I said before, OJ's school, Marymount, is in major damage control. They've hired another PR firm in addition to the one they already have. They are certainly fearful of the FBI going into their records but they're also dealing with furious parents who feel the school defrauded places like USC and their own daughters who played by the rules now are attending a tainted school

by Anonymousreply 340March 17, 2019 8:54 PM

It's routine for students who get 4 on the AP language exam to get to college (and I'm not talking elite--just better state schools and R1s) and earn Bs in writing classes because the AP training in high school AP classes conditioned them to repeat enough words from the prompt to get a high score (based on regurgitation masked as reading comprehension). Those doing so were shocked that they would be expected to actually devise their own main ideas and topics once they got to college.

by Anonymousreply 341March 17, 2019 9:02 PM

Interestingly....about six weeks ago, a junior at L.A.'s prestigious Harvard-Westlake School wrote an editorial for the school's newspaper titled, "Start Putting Extra-Time to the Test." The kids knew.

[quote]“I have seen more than a few of my classmates flock to specialists with the hopes of being diagnosed with a disorder that would qualify them for extra time on their entrance exams,” Glassman wrote. “Extra time has been exploited by some wealthy families who use their easy access to expensive medical professionals to give their children an upper hand in the college admissions process.”

by Anonymousreply 360March 18, 2019 1:14 AM

R324 is right. Because there's such a push to pump up the GPA, kids take more and more APs with the result that the APs have been dumbed down--in English there are two English APs--English Lit and English Composition. Everyone knows that English Composition is for kids who can't manage any kind of literary analysis. Even the teaching of English Lit, which is considered one of the harder APs, has been dumbed down. Kids are very much taught the test instead of the subject. It's depressing as all get-out, since it's counter to developing any innate love of learning. And, frankly, a lot of these kids are going to need unlearn a bunch of "skills" since what's taught is not what you actually do in college.

The whole weighted GPA thing is a bit of a crock because different schools weigh things differently--some schools offer tons of APs from freshmen year on, others don't do them at all, while others only allow them in the upper grades and put a limit on the number a kid can take.

Which is why Harvard groups a fairly wide range of GPAs together and doesn't quibble about the difference between a 4.2 and a 4.7.

And, by the way, Mrs. Toy's son's 4.2 ain't that impressive if you know about weighted GPAs.

r363's article is fascinating, I wonder who "Bill" is:

"And then there was a kid I’ll call Bill. Bill drank and drugged his way through high school. He was drunk in class and drunk all night. He was a supercilious jerk and personally quite cruel. He was also tall and handsome in a dissipated preppy hangdog way. Think Prince William with a little dash of Elvis. His grades hovered in the D range. He had briefly been on the crew team but had dropped out because of drunkenness. When the early decision acceptances came through — surprise! Bill got in. I later realized Bill’s last name was on a prominent group of campus buildings. I could almost feel the scales dropping from my eyes: Oh, this is how the world works. Now I get it!"

by Anonymousreply 377March 18, 2019 2:37 AM

But wasn't that still doing it the "old fashioned way" r377? Buying or donating a building / endowment? I haven't read the article yet, so I may well be wrong in the "Bill" case you are discussing. I am not saying those methods are ethical, but they have been around since schools have been in existence. One could even make the argument that such actions at least serve the school's student body at large, not just the one student.

The methods this operation has uncovered are far more flagrant, vain and greedy to me. Serving no one in the long run, except the lawyers who will make a bundle representing these cunts and us for getting a fuckton of entertainment and schadenfreude from it all.

It is a long story that I am sure I would be eviscerated over R382, I'm reticent in telling this story because people will claim I am making the story up. My mom and her brother were ten years apart. This is my moms story. He would sneak into her bedroom and they would take the corporate plane from Chicago to ST Louis for coffee. It was obvious the love she had for her brother. You can verify this story by going to the Georgetown site. The other students didn't have the money to go home for Christmas to their family so my uncle volunteered to fly them home. Unfortunately there was a snow storm and the plane crashed killing my uncle, Joseph F Mertes Jr. and his classmates. They were in body bags, but there were just ashes. My grandmother never flew in a plane after that. This is probably why I am against suing. My uncle was doing the right thing and circumstances beyond his control cost not only his life, but the life of his classmates.

My mother wanted to study sciences in university but ninety years ago women were encouraged to take more feminine subjects by forcing them to have higher marks than men if they wanted to get into the various science departments. Mum had very good marks, higher than required for men but just short of the grade required for women.

Her uncle, a fellow whose wife was a suffragette, found out and bribed the university to admit her by refinishing the wooden floors in the gym for free. Mum got in and graduated in the top tenth of her class in mathematics in 1932 without having to do a minor in Home Ec or Literature.

I thought Felicity was really good in Transamerica and actually deserved the Oscar in that rather weak year.

Her character in the last season of American Crime was really well tended. She played a kind of basic woman who discovers just how corrupt and evil her husband’s family is (they are revealed to her as essentially human traffickers). It was a very different character than any I had seen her play in the past.

She will most likely lose her career over this. But Hollywood loves a comeback and you really never know. Mel “Sugar Tits” Gibson was tacitly welcomed back a decade or so later. It can happen.

Huffman and WHM deserve all this and more though. The sense of entitlement and the tone of the released emails from her were both very disturbing. What a disservice to your child to fake them out on their own test scores.

IRS crimes (pay back all the money, fines, penalties and may have prison time)

Criminal charges (these are prison sentences and fines. This is a court trial, or a plea bargin.)

Family court (minor children are involved. parents involving family members and household staff)

Civil Court ( under RICO others can sue against the frozen assets).

The rich have always tried to bribe their way into good colleges.

Back in the '80s and 90s I was an Assistant Dean for a Top 25 university. While the University offered multiple large information sessions each day, I would conduct 1:1 interviews sessions when requested by faculty, development officers, or influential alum. I would occasionally get 'thank-you' gifts for taking the time to meet with these prospective applicants. While I never received $, I was sent gifts afterwards (a Mark Cross passport cover, Hermes ties, a Waterford Crystal decanter, batik from Indonesia, bottles of Scotch, smoked salmon, baklava, and tins and tins of cookies).

All food gifts went to the mail room to be devoured by the work study students. I'd donate the other bits of baksheesh to campus fundraisers / silent auctions. A student's admissions file would not mention any receipt of gifts as I did not want that to influence any decision.

Most of the gifts came from people who ended up not applying after all. But that passport cover helped raise money for Hurricane Andrew relief, the decanter helped the student theatre, etc. And the mailroom staff loved the chocolate chip cookies.

Most of these 'gift donors' never submitted an application.

@LosFelizDaycare

We can’t address the admissions scandal yet but if anyone has leads on an LFDC quidditch team please come forward. We’re unable to locate practice locations or a game schedule but have a full roster.

by Anonymousreply 431March 19, 2019 2:32 AM

I’ve always liked Felicity and feel badly that she got herself into this. It’s far easier for people with means to get caught up in something like this than many want to admit.

They want good things for their kids so badly that it blinds them. I think many people who are pointing fingers would find themselves sorely tempted if they were presented with the opportunity.

I think jail would be overly harsh. Some sort of financial restitution is probably the way to go. I don’t think it should have an effect on her career (or Lori Loughlin’s, for that matter).

by Anonymousreply 432March 19, 2019 2:50 AM

R432, their kids already had "good things". It's not like they wouldn't have been able to go to college if their parents hadn't committed these crimes.

They robbed other people's kids of a shot at "good things".

by Anonymousreply 433March 19, 2019 3:21 AM

My mom wouldn't have done it for me R432 and she had the means. A cashier made a mistake in change to my grandfather and he made my brother and I walk 6 blocks to return the money. Lying and cheated were unacceptable behavior in our household. I'm not perfect, but I try my damnest to live by the values my grandparents and mom instilled in me.

by Anonymousreply 434March 19, 2019 3:32 AM

"It's not like they wouldn't have been able to go to college if their parents hadn't committed these crimes."

Yeah, but you could say the same things about the kids they "robbed" of a spot in college. Most of those kids are also affluent, and I bet they all applied to to other good schools and were accepted

by Anonymousreply 435March 19, 2019 3:38 AM

Lori probably had the 6 giant flat screen TVs delivered because the family members probably most likely are angry and aren't talking to each other. They shut down their social media and Lori has been shitcanned from her Hallmark shows. I imagine that they are just locked in their bedrooms and watching DVDs, Netflix or Hulu.

by Anonymousreply 436March 19, 2019 3:45 AM

[quote] I don’t think it should have an effect on her career

Too late for that now.

by Anonymousreply 437March 19, 2019 3:49 AM

R434 Similar story in my family. My grandparents had means and real integrity, my mom had less integrity but she never would have stooped to paying to have someone cheat for us.

R432 I think plenty of people would take the opportunity if given the chance but I'm not sure how much having the means makes a difference on values. If anything having the means should have eased the pressure on them because their kids would have been fine even if they hadn't gotten into those colleges. It would have been disappointing but those kids would still have plenty of options and it wasn't make or break for them. The parents did it because their values were in the wrong place.

I think they should all be forced to create a scholarship fund but the courts are going to want to make an example of these parents so a short prison stay is possible.

^the feds get drug dealers all the time. upthread poster thanks for your science siren mum story..I didn’t know that happened with higher grade requirements. She was born in 1932 to parents who had never gone to college. her mum told me she recalled having 3 crying babies and no food. my mother guaranteed parents to teach their kids to swin with only the requirement they could put their face in the water. She waitresses from age 12. She wrote to the Ivy League medical schools around age 12 and asked for advice for her upcoming medical career. Some wrote back; one said you will have to focus on career only and have no husband or kids. She thought, nonsense men have families and practice medicine and so will I. She did her zoology degree in 3 years as she though her parents couldn’t afford it. she got into and graduated from Northwestern med school and was the first year women got in. One of her professors was loyal Davis.,Nancy Reagan’s stepfather. He said never let an insurance company tell you how to practice medicine. She helped low income people and took calls in the middle of the night from patients. I learned from her she called or wrote northwestern and said she had been admitted elsewhere (she had but wanted to go to Chicago from rural Wa state) and needed to know if they were going to accept her. they said yes. I called the top liberal arts college I applied to (also in the Midwest) and asked if they needed to interview me for a decision and I get a yes. I had lower grades than test scores from arguing with teachers😀

by Anonymousreply 446March 19, 2019 8:43 AM

R441 I'm Canadian. Apparently it was a thing back then that the female students needed higher marks than males to get into male-dominated fields of study though my mother's cousin, also born in 1912, seemed to get into medical school in Scotland with no problems beyond a great deal of harassment by other students and even faculty. When she graduated she ended up working with her obstetrician father as there was still prejudice against female doctors even in the most gynocentric medical specialty. Good for your mother for persevering. Mum's cousin was still delivering babies into her late seventies.

My mother never used her mathematics degree. She got married aged 21 and had children, and I was born when she was 46.

I wrote my son's college essay. It was 11pm. Online applications were due at midnight. I'd been a professional writer, so I just tossed one off. I used imperfect grammar. I wrote in an 18 year old male voice. I told a great story (true.) He got into several colleges with middling grades. This was years ago and not as competitive a time as now. But my point is, if I had it to do over. . . I wouldn't write the essay. My son loved college. Even told me he'd never dreamed how much he would enjoy and appreciate the classes he took. But the thing is, it's taken him years to become more responsible and to lose his flakiness. He's still fighting it. I baled him out too many times. I know this now. Wonder if these parents will ever know how seriously they've hurt their children?

by Anonymousreply 462March 20, 2019 12:31 AM

The end result of this scandal may be strict changes to the college/uni application process. I can see strict electronic applications being instituted at the top schools, whereby applicants will need to sign in live at designated times to apply to prove they're actually submitting, writing the essay, etc. The essay subject will change randomly on any given day so applicants won't know in advance what the topic is. It will mimic the current SAT test taking process to weed out cheating.

Something has to change to at least make sure schools know exactly who is filling out applications and submitting them.

by Anonymousreply 463March 20, 2019 1:44 AM

This is why I'm glad I don't have children. The whole college experience has become an overpriced ordeal, and now these kids have to jump through hoops, practically from birth, just to get admitted.

by Anonymousreply 465March 20, 2019 2:57 AM

They need to change the requirements for getting disability on tests, these days if you have enough money you can easily pay a doctor off. This needs to end, make it harder for people to game the system and let the kids with real problems get extra time. And if you need 2 days to take the SAT because you get some anxiety or ADD, you probably should be rethinking college.

The only changes that would help would be to lower tuition costs. No interest student grants (not loans). by Anonymousreply 480March 20, 2019 1:47 PM

R480 Found this on Vulture. Seems paltry but, sadly, believable.

Could they go to jail?

Yes. If convicted, they could each face up to five years in prison plus fines.

Felony charges usually carry minimum sentencing that includes jail time. It will be up to the defendants and their attorneys about how to plead and if any deals can be made (the sums of money each allegedly paid could also dictate punitive damage). In some cases, people indicted on these types of charges can also face lesser penalties if they are able to offer useful information about other possible offenders.

At the end of the day, Lori and Felicity's careers will never, ever be the same. I think Felicity will be lucky to get supporting roles in indies and lower budget films, but Lori, she'll be lucky to shrill for cookware on infomercials. What these two actresses participated in is not only illegal, but these are federal criminal charges and they misused their wealth and privilege to get their kids into college in a fraudulent matter that has pissed off so many people, poor, middle class, and wealthy, who have done the right things to try to get their kid into an elite college.

I know I for one wouldn't watch anything they're in, and surely, if plea deals are made, more names will be dropped. These people only care about themselves, that's why they're in this mess, and they are going to save their asses by coughing up other names.

Macy and Huffman both have higher profile careers, so I can see situation where one of them takes the fall for the whole mess in order for the other one to still be able to get work. It seems in this case it's Macy who's trying to get out of it without taint.

by Anonymousreply 524March 21, 2019 12:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 535March 21, 2019 7:55 AM

I totally agree r535. In a way, I can't blame OJ for being pissed off. I don't know why OJ isn't going ahead and posting her brains out on her stupid SM. She would most certainly get curiosity clicks, and that translates to a fair bit of dosh I would think. She's an adult, so is it really Lori and Mr. Lori keeping her quiet? Perhaps it is on her own lawyer's advice, but again, why? Get that money while you can, you dim slore.

[quote]Mail fraud is a so-called "legal term of art," so yes, it means more than its literal definition. Similar to "wire fraud," all it does is describe a means of fraud that takes place over state boundaries - the necessary requirement in order to seek federal jurisdiction. "Mail" and "wire" nearly always refer to frauds of this nature, hence their inclusion.

Not quite, r408. Mail fraud does not require interstate mailing. Congressional power to enact the mail fraud statute is based in the "postal clause" of the U.S. Constitution. Prosecutors must show fraud and that the U.S. mail was used to effect an integral part of the scheme. However, the mail could have been used to send a postcard to the building next door, as long as mailing that postcard accomplished some part of the scheme.

by Anonymousreply 537March 21, 2019 9:08 AM

The wire fraud statute is similar to the mail fraud statute. However, the power to enact the statute comes from the commerce clause, which gives Congress authority to regulate interstate commerce. Thus, the statute requires an interstate wire communication that effects a part of the fraud.

Wow, welcome former DOJ trial attorney! Very grateful for anything you can explain to us about this mess. What are your thoughts on the long-term ramifications of this operation? Do you think there will be any, or do you think it will all dissipate with time? Will there be prison sentences for not just Lori or Felicity, but others named in all of this, or is only probation/fines more likely? Sorry for all of the questions, but so fascinated. All ears!

by Anonymousreply 539March 21, 2019 9:33 AM

My first thought is that I'm still amazed the FBI arrested Huffman at home, supposedly with guns drawn. WTF? I worked on white-collar-crime cases in which the crooks frequently seemed to view a potential conviction as the price of doing business. We worked out deals in which the defendants would surrender. On one case in which FBI agents conducted drop-in interviews at the suspects' homes, the defense attorneys were miffed, even a bit shocked that the FBI would be so rude as to drop in and not arrange an interview. Huffman or her attorney really must have pissed off someone for the DOJ to pull a stunt like that.

In my first week as a DOJ attorney, I called a CEO's office. It wasn't in regard to a criminal matter; I was checking references for job applicants. But, baby, when I announced myself on the phone as a DOJ attorney, I was speaking to the CEO within 90 seconds. Business people might not like dealing with the DOJ, but they know it's a part of business and they behave professionally. I'm betting Huffman reacted arrogantly. (I admit I enjoyed it; I promise I did not abuse it.)

by Anonymousreply 540March 21, 2019 9:51 AM

r540 Oh god, you are an absolute treasure. I know it was explained on one of these threads why we didn't get any mugshots, but I can't locate it at the moment. What is your take? We did get that incredibly bitchy looking police sketch of Lori, but our hunger is great.

Speaking of Lori, why do you think she got the kid glove treatment (show up when you can, leave when you want, no paps) and not Felicity? Though my vibes agree that Felicity must have been arrogant. She knew showing up was inevitable, but dragged her feet thinking, "eh, I'll get to it" was my guess. I could be way off. But Lori and Mr. Lori's crime (fuck "alleged") is so much bigger, is it not?

Abuse anything you want and can if it brings in the deets! :)

by Anonymousreply 541March 21, 2019 10:04 AM

Long-term ramifications? I expect congressional hearings with the traditional grandstanding, especially since the silly season of presidential campaigning approaches. You don't need to go to law school to see that coming.

As to punishment, I really don't know. I dealt with crooked businessmen. Most of the defendants in this matter are amateurs, though some have engaged serious legal representation. I expect the people working for the phony charity to be punished the worst with probable prison time.

I'm actually in the middle of a bout of insomnia. I don't want to comment further lest I embarrass myself. I check in daily and will answer questions if I have a clue what's going on.

by Anonymousreply 542March 21, 2019 10:09 AM

Thanks again r542 aka DTA. I have insomnia too, so you have my sympathies. Try to get some rest.

by Anonymousreply 543March 21, 2019 10:15 AM

I didn't know about mugshots in federal cases until I read these threads on Datalounge, no joke. No one ever wanted mugshots of our crooks, so it never came up. Questions from the press were referred to the DOJ press office (I'm drawing a blank on the official title.). I answered questions from Bloomberg reporters at the courthouse about technical details of cases on occasion, but that's as close as I ever came to publicity issues.

On the subject of legal journalism in general: Kurt Eichenwald is worth reading. He reported on a case I worked on tangentially. It was a complex case, and Eichenwald nailed it in the papers. I don't agree with everything he takes a stand on, but he's an excellent reporter.

by Anonymousreply 544March 21, 2019 2:59 PM

I'm late to this party-- posted a million miles up thread. I'm the single-mom frau who wrote her son's admission essay. I did it because he was hanging with do-less surfer guys. He wasn't that interested in college, so he said if he didn't get in, he'd work and go to community college like some of his friends did. Oh, yeah, and surf, too. I knew THAT was a recipe for disaster. So I wrote the essay. For years, I thought I did the right thing. I crossed the line to save my son's life, because he ended up loving college and doing well there. He was just too dim to know what a real 4-yr college could be. His old friends are still working at surf shops, doing drugs, or have 3 kids by 3 different women. BUT. . . I wrote that essay out of guilt. Because I hadn't done more to hold him accountable, sooner. That's what this scandal means to me. Guilty parents trying to make their guilt go away for being lousy parents in the first place. You don't think really think LL looks at OJ and thinks, Wow, I raised a winner! She thinks, just like you do -- where did this ungrateful little stupid bitch come from??

by Anonymousreply 545March 21, 2019 6:57 PM

"She thinks, just like you do -- where did this ungrateful little stupid bitch come from??"

May be so, r545--but all LL has to do is look in the mirror. Of course, self-reflection (even in a mirror) probably isn't her strong suit.

by Anonymousreply 546March 21, 2019 7:00 PM

R546 Yep. The good parents accept responsiblity and fix themselves first. My son's flakiness, lack of responsibility continued after college. I realized I'd baled him out one too many times. Looking back I'd do it differently now. He'd have had to sink or swim. Final point is, I've worked on myself; he's gotten better. End of parent lesson.

by Anonymousreply 547March 21, 2019 10:26 PM

So Lori and her husband have a reprieve until April 3rd. Apparently their lawyers have a scheduling conflict. I wonder if this is a power play and trying to distance themselves from Felicity. Felicity is still scheduled to appear March 29th.

What were Felicity and Macy thinking?! It's not like their girls are planning to be brain surgeons. They want to be actresses. Every interview is going to have a cringe-inducing moment in it, including this one where Bill talks about having to coax their daughters to visit after they leave for college.

Their Colorado ranch has beautiful views, horses and oil paintings.

r547 thanks for your input. Seriously-I know women get a rough ride here, (sometimes deserved, sometimes not) but as an eldergay without any relevant experience it's interesting to hear another perspective.

Personally, I saw it as just an extension of parental narcissism. Not everyone needs to go to college, especially when they have a successful gig at a young age. And I doubt parents like that would have the self-awareness to feel guilty in the first place.

From AD: "Macy loved the idea of a blue wall in the master bedroom, though it ended up bluer than [Lonni] Paul [the Macys' interior designer] anticipated, and made the nude-y blush color of their Baker Furniture Archetype sofa pinker somehow. But the actor didn’t flinch. 'Bill’s very confident in his masculinity and has no problem with it,' says Paul."

Isn't it charming that in this day and age, a man's masculinity isn't threatened by having a pink sofa? After reading that article on the Macys in AD, I loathe them even more.

April 3rd is going to be an interesting news days. EVERYONE in this initial indictment wave will be there. I'm also glad that USC and the other schools are investigating which students have been involved this shit show and expel the students, and revoke any degrees awarded.

[quote]Where was Felicity trying to get her kid into?

[quote]What is so odd is she is part of the Atlantic Theater Company which has a drama program through NYU. If nothing else I'm sure the kid would have got into NYU pretty easily.

I don't think it's been mentioned which college they were trying to get her into. Their part in scam just seems to be test cheating part. I also think the daughter could have gotten into NYU easily. NYU already has a history of accepting children of actors, directors, and producers into their school (e.g. Bryce Dallas Howard, Jack Quaid, Billie Lourd). Then there are some lesser known actor spawn who attended NYU for a bit like Andie MacDowell's daughter Margaret Qualley. I remember reading articles years ago where Bryce Dallas Howard claimed that no one at NYU knew she was Ron Howard's daughter lol.

William H. Macy also talked about nepotism in Hollywood years ago and that his daughters would get a leg up. He and Felicity could have just avoided this scandal if they got their daughter auditions with their connections. William and Felicity could have talked to Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgewick, Andie MacDowell, or Christine Baranski for advice on getting their daughter into the business.

by Anonymousreply 567March 22, 2019 5:49 PM

USC seems very corrupt.

All degrees granted there are now of questionable validity.

by Anonymousreply 568March 22, 2019 6:03 PM

The fun part is now we can presume these mediocre people cheated their ways into everything they ever did. Because they probably did!

Whom did the Macys grift out of that Colorado ranch? They are probably cheating on something right this minute too. And that shoddy merchandise Mossimo pimped out to Target? Does a shred of that shit still exist? These people probably grifted and grafted their ways right up to the top, the shits.

by Anonymousreply 569March 22, 2019 6:18 PM

R569 Mossimo sold his fashion label long ago. I think most of his income now is made from investments and flipping high end real estate. The US Marshals now hold a $2M Lien on their $35M (overpriced) home in Bel Air. Can it be sold? The property had already been languishing in the market for over a year, is anyone willing to go near it now? Talk about the Scarlet Letter of Real Estate!

This scam is going on for decades . Everyone is falling from the sky now but this is nothing new . Rich people do that all the time to get their offspring in college or university .

by Anonymousreply 582March 23, 2019 4:48 PM

Shit has been going on for a long time now, and out in the open too. Did anyone have this sort of outrage when things were pretty much out in the open? Remember, JFK Jr was a horrible student who flunked 11th grade, yet he was accepted into Brown. Later he failed bar exam twice I believe, and finally passed when he took the test under iffy circumstances definitely some rules bent there. Same thing pretty much with Prince Harry who by all accounts is dumb as a doorknob. In fact he was involved in a cheating scandal involving teachers who helped him cheat, there was a reason he didn't go on to university, he was too dumb to even graduate from his prep school. Both JFK Jr and Prince Harry had stories that were out in public, but why wasn't there more outrage against them , their families, and people who helped them cheat?

by Anonymousreply 583March 23, 2019 4:54 PM

I thought kate help him cheat on all his exams. They went to a pretty easy school, a university for rich kids.

by Anonymousreply 584March 23, 2019 4:57 PM

Maybe JFK Jr, finally passed the bar after getting a "disability" and able to take the exam over 2 days...lol. who knows? But NY bar is one of the toughest in the USA due to all the tax laws.

Already told you Brown is for stupid celeb offspring. And big names are courted by ALL universities...doesn't matter the score.

by Anonymousreply 585March 23, 2019 8:05 PM

R584 Kate has nothing to do with this. Different prince, different schools.

by Anonymousreply 586March 23, 2019 8:05 PM

I never heard of Prince William being stupid or needing to cheat. I also never knew that St. Andrews was an easy school for rich kids.

Harry was the one with the cheating scandal. That moron had his teachers doing his homework for him.

by Anonymousreply 587March 23, 2019 8:08 PM

St. Andrews isn't an easy school--it's known for its high-end engineering program among other things.

And, yes, people knew about rich kids buying their way in--but the whole donation thing sidestepped bribery with there being no explicit quid pro quo. This was out and out bribery. So, similar, in terms of morality (though the schools will argue that big donations mean better financial aid for the worthy poors), but not legally. Also, donations don't involve deceit about the student's merits.

by Anonymousreply 588March 23, 2019 8:17 PM

r588 Perfectly said.

by Anonymousreply 589March 23, 2019 8:20 PM

I wonder how much Diana Ross paid to get Tracee into Brown.

by Anonymousreply 590March 23, 2019 8:21 PM

Before, the rich would have to pony up to get a spot for their kids at a school, but the school got a library or a swim stadium, or a bunch of scholarships for needy kids, and the kid with the bought place got a reputation and diminishing returns.

W got into Yale, but not into HLS -- not even into UT Law. He had to go to HBS, which was no big thing at the time.

JFK Jr passed th bar, but didn't clutter up the DA's office for long, and died following the last of many delusions.

by Anonymousreply 591March 23, 2019 8:36 PM

LL and husband didn't go to college. (But no ASU for their girls!) Where did Felicity and Macy go? Aspirational parents want their children to go beyond their own achievements. The Macys were thinking Stanford, Yale, or Harvard, is my guess. Anybody can get into NYU.

by Anonymousreply 592March 23, 2019 9:04 PM

Huffman went to NYU--and they were thinking acting schools--i.e. Carnegie-Mellon, NYU, etc.--since they were seen by people at auditions for thsoe schools. So, not Stanford, Yale, Harvard. And while NYU isn't that big a rich, NYU-Tisch is very competitive--think below 10 percent admit rate.

by Anonymousreply 593March 23, 2019 9:13 PM
